The occurrences of harmful algal blooms (HABs), in terms of frequency and area in the Chinese coastal waters, have been increasing since 1980s and caused considerable economic losses. In the present study, we have analyzed spatial and seasonal characteristics of HAB events in the southern Yellow Sea and East China Sea along Chinese coast from 1933 to 2004. With a total 435 HAB records, the most frequent HAB occurrence area (FHA) is off the Yangtze River mouth and another two FHA areas are located south of the Yangtze River estuary along about isobaths of 30–60 m coastal water in the East China Sea. The time of HAB occurrence shifted during our study period: from autumn (August–October) before 1980s to July–August in 1980s, during May–July in 1990s, and May–June for the period of 2000–2004. Causative species were found to be different: Noctiluca scintillans and Skeletonema costatum were dominant causative species prior to 2000; and Prorocentrum donghaiense Lu was dominant from 2000 to 2004 and also caused large blooms in May. Trichodesmium sp. caused many HABs in autumn (August–October) prior to 1980s with only one HAB between 1980 and 2004. The changes of the dominant HAB species may have affected the timings of HAB occurrence, as well as the increasing HAB-affected areas in recent years.  相似文献

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) occur frequently in the South China Sea (SCS), causing enormous economic losses in aquaculture. We analyzed historical HAB records during the period from 1980 to 2003 in SCS. We found that HABs-affected areas have expanded and the frequency of HABs varied during this period. The seasonal and annual variations, as well as causative algal species of HABs are different among the four regions. Areas with frequent HABs include the Pearl River Estuary (China), the Manila Bay (the Philippines), the Masinloc Bay (the Philippines), and the western coast of Sabah (Malaysia). HABs occurred frequently during March–May in the northern region of SCS, May–July in the eastern region, July in the western region, and year-round in the southern region. Among the species that cause HABs, Noctiluca scintillans dominated in the northern region, and Pyrodinium bahamense in the southern and eastern regions. Causative species also varied in different years for the entire SCS. Both P. bahamense and N. scintillans were the dominant species during 1980–2003. Some species not previously recorded formed blooms during 1991–2003, including Phaeocystis globosa, Scrippsiella trochoidea, Heterosigma akashiwo, and Mesodinium rubrum. Variations in HABs are related to various regional conditions, such as a reversed monsoon wind in the entire SCS, river discharges in the northern area, upwelling in Vietnam coastal waters during southwest winds and near Malaysia coastal waters during northeast winds, and eutrophication from coastal aquaculture in the Pearl River estuary, Manila Bay, and Masinloc Bay. Culture experiments involving 23 algae strains were conducted to evaluate the algicidal effects of a newly developed algicidal thiazolidinedione (TD) derivative (TD49) on non-harmful and harmful algal bloom (HAB) species. We also assessed the effect of various concentrations of TD49 on various growth phases (lag, logarithmic, and stationary) of the harmful algae Heterocapsa circularisquama (Dinophyceae) and Heterosigma akashiwo (Raphidophyceae; hereafter, Heterosigma) and the non-harmful diatoms Skeletonema costatum and Chaetoceros didymus. The inhibitory ratios (%) for H. circularisquama and Heterosigma at 2.0 μM TD49 were significantly higher than those at other concentrations, and the inhibitory ratio varied depending on growth phase and species as follows: logarithmic?≥?stationary?>?lag phase for H. circularisquama and logarithmic?≥?lag?>?stationary phase for Heterosigma. Although the inhibitory ratios for C. didymus were similar to those for the two harmful algae (H. circularisquama and Heterosigma), inhibitory effects on S. costatum were not apparent at >2.0 μM in any growth phase. The algicidal activity of TD49 on the harmful and non-harmful algae was as follows: unarmored HAB species?>?armored HAB species?>?diatom species?>?cryptophyte species. TD49 was algicidal to most HABs but had a little inhibitory effect on some non-harmful algae, implying that TD49 has selective algicidal activity. The parasitic dinoflagellates in the genus of Amoebophrya can infect broad ranges of planktonic dinoflagellates, and transform algal biomass into organic matter that can be recycled within the planktonic community. The ecological significance of Amoebophrya spp. during harmful algal bloom (HAB) events was gradually recognized along with revelation of its host specificity and diversity in picoplankton communities. The eutrophicated coastal waters of China are frequently affected by HABs, particularly in Changjiang (Yangtze River) estuary and the adjacent East China Sea; while, no research has been conducted to explore the ecological roles of parasitism during HAB events and the related dinoflagellate bloom dynamics. For the first time, we confirmed the presence of Amoebophrya infections in the planktonic community of this region; six species of dinoflagellates were infected, including Ceratium tripos, Scrippsiella trochoidea, Gonyaulax spinifera, Gymnodinium sp., Gonyaulax sp. and an Alexandrium sp. Molecular sequences retrieved from environmental water samples revealed high genetic diversity of Amoebophryidae-like organisms in the water column. Amoebophrya-infected dinoflagellates were only observed in high salinity (>20) stations suggesting that salinity may be a factor limiting the distribution of Amoebophyra infections in natural environment. Whereas, no evidence of Amoebophrya infection was observed in the bloom-forming species Karenia mikimotoi, suggesting that K. mikimotoi in this region was likely free of Amoebophridae infection.  相似文献

Noctiluca scintillans is one of the most common harmful algal species and widely known due to its bioluminescence. In this study, the spatial distribution, seasonal variations, and long-term trends of N. scintillans blooms in China and the related drivers were analyzed and discussed. From 1933 to 2020, a total of 265 events of N. scintillans blooms were recorded in Chinese coastal waters, with a total duration of 1052 days. The first N. scintillans bloom occurred in Zhejiang in 1933, and only three events were recorded before 1980. From 1981 to 2020, N. scintillans caused harmful algal blooms (HABs) almost every year, both the average duration and the proportion of multiphase HABs showed an increasing trend. 1986–1992, 2002–2004, and 2009–2016 were the three peak periods with a frequency of no less than five events of N. scintillans blooms per year. In terms of spatial distribution, N. scintillans blooms spread from the Southeast China Sea to the Bohai Sea after 2000, Guangdong, Fujian, and Hebei were the three provinces with the highest numbers of recorded events of N. scintillans blooms. Moreover, 86.8% of the events of N. scintillans blooms occurred in spring (March, April, and May) and summer (June, July, and August). Among environmental factors, the dissolved inorganic phosphate, dissolved silicate and chemical oxygen demand were significantly correlated with the cell density of N. scintillans during N. scintillans blooms, and most of N. scintillans blooms were recorded in the temperature range of 18.0–25.0°C. Precipitation, hydrodynamics, water temperature, and food availability might be the main factors affecting the spatial–temporal distribution of N. scintillans blooms along the Chinese coast.  相似文献

The detection of dense harmful algal blooms (HABs) by satellite remote sensing is usually based on analysis of chlorophyll-a as a proxy. However, this approach does not provide information about the potential harm of bloom, nor can it identify the dominant species. The developed HAB risk classification method employs a fully automatic data-driven approach to identify key characteristics of water leaving radiances and derived quantities, and to classify pixels into “harmful”, “non-harmful” and “no bloom” categories using Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA). Discrimination accuracy is increased through the use of spectral ratios of water leaving radiances, absorption and backscattering. To reduce the false alarm rate the data that cannot be reliably classified are automatically labelled as “unknown”. This method can be trained on different HAB species or extended to new sensors and then applied to generate independent HAB risk maps; these can be fused with other sensors to fill gaps or improve spatial or temporal resolution. The HAB discrimination technique has obtained accurate results on MODIS and MERIS data, correctly identifying 89% of Phaeocystis globosa HABs in the southern North Sea and 88% of Karenia mikimotoi blooms in the Western English Channel. A linear transformation of the ocean colour discriminants is used to estimate harmful cell counts, demonstrating greater accuracy than if based on chlorophyll-a; this will facilitate its integration into a HAB early warning system operating in the southern North Sea.  相似文献

The seasonal occurrence of Noctiluca scintillans and the causativemechanisms of red tide phenomena were investigated in the northwesternpart of Dapeng Bay, the South China Sea, from March 1990 toJune 1992. It occurred in the plankton usually from Januarythrough May/June with peak abundance from March to early May.At least eight red tides of this organism, when the surfacewater was covered with the pink patches and slicks, were observedduring the investigation period, and all of them took placebetween March and early May. Noctiluca occurred at temperaturesfrom 15.8 to 2.8.6°C, and the population density was thehighest at temperatures between 19 and 25°C. The relationship between algae and their zooplanktonic predators typically involves consumption of nutrients by algae, grazing of the algae by zooplankton which in turn enhances predator biomass, controls algal growth and regenerates nutrients. Eutrophication raises nutrient levels, but does not simply increase normal predator-prey activity; rather, harmful algal bloom (HAB) events develop often with serious ecological and aesthetic implications. Generally, HAB species are outwardly poor competitors for nutrients, while their development of grazing deterrents during nutrient stress ostensibly occurs too late, after the nutrients have largely been consumed already by fast-growing non-HAB species. A new mechanism is presented to explain HAB dynamics under these circumstances. Using a multi-nutrient predator-prey model, it is demonstrated that these blooms can develop through the self-propagating failure of normal predator-prey activity, resulting in the transfer of nutrients into HAB growth at the expense of competing algal species. Rate limitation of this transfer provides a continual level of nutrient stress that results in HAB species exhibiting grazing deterrents protecting them from top-down control. This process is self-stabilizing as long as nutrient demand exceeds supply, maintaining the unpalatable status of HABs; such events are most likely under eutrophic conditions with skewed nutrient ratios.  相似文献

While the economic consequences of HABs may seem obvious, there is little empirical evidence to support the assertion or its magnitude relative to other environmental effects. As scientists learn more about the effectiveness of alternative HAB prevention, mitigation, and control strategies and agencies prepare for a suite of environmental events, information on potential economic losses are needed at the firm level to evaluate and justify continued HAB-related expenditures. To determine the extent of monetary losses that some firms may have incurred due to blooms of Karenia brevis (red tides) in Southwest Florida, 7 years of daily proprietary data were obtained from three beachfront restaurants and supplemented with environmental data from nearby weather stations. The statistical models revealed that reductions in daily sales ranged from $868 to $3734 (13.7%–15.3% on average) when red tide conditions were present. Estimated losses are compared to other environmental events and were found to coincide with those from other studies. The incidence of red tide events (as noted by each restaurant manager) corresponded with cell counts that averaged 180,853 cells/l as measured within 6 miles. Collectively this information supports the hypothesis of localized economic losses and provides a threshold cell count for future loss projections.  相似文献

Harmful Cochlodinium polykrikoides blooms have frequently appeared and caused fatal harm to aquaculture in Korean coastal waters since 1995. We investigated the applicability of GOCI, the world's first Geostationary Ocean Color Imager, in monitoring the distribution and temporal movement of a harmful algal bloom (HAB) that was discovered in the East Sea near the Korean peninsula in August 2013. We identified the existence of C. polykrikoides at a maximum cell abundance of over 6000 cells/mL and a chlorophyll a concentration of over 400 mg/m3. In areas of C. polykrikoides blooms, GOCI remote sensing reflectance (Rrs) spectra demonstrated the typical radiometric features of a HAB, and from the diurnal variations using GOCI-derived chlorophyll concentration images, we were able to identify the vertical migration of the red tide species. We also found that the formation and propagation of the HAB had relations with cold water mass in the coastal region. GOCI can be effectively applied to the monitoring of short-term and long-term movements of red tides.  相似文献

Satellite pictures and in situ observations indicate strong phytoplankton blooms including harmful algae blooms (HABs) during southwest (SW) summer monsoon in the Vietnamese upwelling area. In this period, nutrients are provided by coastal upwelling and by the very high river runoff from the Mekong River. During SW monsoon, in general two circulation patterns exist which allow the prediction of advection and diffusion of HAB patches. A Lagrangian HAB model that is driven by a circulation model and applied to HABs in Vietnamese waters is presented. Advection which is the most complicated part in modelling transport of passive substances is validated with a Lagrangian sediment trap experiment. The model produces realistic results compared to in situ observations and satellite images and might be used for real time forecast in the future.  相似文献

The dinoflagellate Karenia mikimotoi is a noxious and harmful algal bloom (HAB)-forming microalga. Establishing a rapid, accurate, and sensitive method of detecting this harmful alga is necessary to provide warnings of imminent HABs through field monitoring. Here, an isothermal amplification technique combined with a rapid analytical method for nucleic acid-based amplified products, i.e., hyperbranched rolling circle amplification (HRCA) coupled with lateral flow dipstick (LFD), hereafter denoted as HRCA-LFD, was established to detect K. mikimotoi. The HRCA-LFD assay relied on a padlock probe (PLP) targeting DNA template and an LFD probe targeting PLP. The sequenced internal transcribed spacer of K. mikimotoi through molecular cloning was used as the target of PLP. The optimized HRCA conditions was determined to be as follows: PLP concentration, 20 pM; ligation temperature, 65 °C; ligation time, 10 min; amplification temperature, 61 °C; and amplification time, 30 min. The developed HRCA-LFD assay was specific for K. mikimotoi, displaying no cross-reactivity with other common microalgae. Sensitivity-comparison tests indicated that HRCA-LFD assay was 100-fold more sensitive than PCR, with a detection limit of 0.1 cell mL−1 when used to analyze spiked field samples. The analysis with field samples also indicated that HRCA-LFD assay was suitable for samples with a target cell density range of 1–1000 cells mL−1. All of these results suggested that HRCA-LFD assay is an alternative method for the sensitive and reliable detection of K. mikimotoi from marine water samples.  相似文献

Biosurfactants have been suggested as a method to control harmful algal blooms (HABs), but warrant further and more in-depth investigation. Here we have investigated the algicidal effect of a biosurfactant produced by the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa on five diverse marine and freshwater HAB species that have not been tested previously. These include Alexandrium minutum (Dinophycaee), Karenia brevis (Dinophyceae), Pseudonitzschia sp. (Bacillariophyceae), in marine ecosystems, and Gonyostomum semen (Raphidophyceae) and Microcystis aeruginosa (Cyanophyecae) in freshwater. We examined not only lethal but also sub-lethal effects of the biosurfactant. In addition, the effect of the biosurfactant on Daphnia was tested. Our conclusions were that very low biosurfactant concentrations (5 μg mL−1) decreased both the photosynthesis efficiency and the cell viability and that higher concentrations (50 μg mL−1) had lethal effects in four of the five HAB species tested. The low concentrations employed in this study and the diversity of HAB genera tested suggest that biosurfactants may be used to either control initial algal blooms without causing negative side effect to the ecosystem, or to provoke lethal effects when necessary.  相似文献

Noctiluca scintillans (Macartney) Kofoid et Swezy, 1921 is an unarmoured heterotrophic dinoflagellate with a global distribution, and has been considered as one of the ancestral taxa among dinoflagellates. Recently, 18S rDNA, actin, α-, β-tubulin, and Hsp90-based phylogenies have shown the basal position of the noctilucids. However, the relationships of dinoflagellates in the basal lineages are still controversial. Although the nuclear rDNA (e.g. 18S, ITS-5.8S, and 28S) contains much genetic information, DNA sequences of N. scintillans rDNA molecules were insufficiently characterized as yet. Here the author sequenced a long-range nuclear rDNA, spanning from the 18S to the D5 region of the 28S rDNA, of N. scintillans. The present N. scintillans had a nearly identical genotype (>99.0% similarity) compared to other Noctiluca sequences from different geographic origins. Nucleotide divergence in the partial 28S rDNA was significantly high (p<0.05) as compared to the 18S rDNA, demonstrating that the information from 28S rDNA is more variable. The 28S rDNA phylogeny of 17 selected dinoflagellates, two perkinsids, and two apicomplexans as outgroups showed that N. scintillans and Oxyrrhis marina formed a clade that diverged separately from core dinoflagellates.  相似文献

The heterotrophic dinoflagellate Noctiluca scintillans has anegligible swimming ability and feeds predominantly on immobileprey. How, then, does it encounter prey? Noctiluca scintillansis positively buoyant and, therefore, we hypothesized that itintercepts prey particles during ascent and/or that microscaleshear brings it into contact with prey. Noctiluca scintillanshas a specific carbon content 1–2 orders of magnitudeless than that typical for protists and, thus, an inflated volume.It also has a density slightly less than that of the ambientwater and therefore ascends at high velocities (-1 m h–1).In stagnant water, clearance rates of latex spheres (5–80µm) increased approximately with prey particle size squared.This scaling is consistent with N.scintillans being an interceptionfeeder. However, absolute clearance rates were substantiallylower than those predicted by modeling N.scintillans both asa spherical and as a cylindrical collector. The latter modelassumes that prey particles are collected on the string of mucusthat may form at the tip of the tentacle. Feeding, growth andprey selection experiments all demonstrated that diatoms arecleared at substantially higher rates than latex beads and otherphytoplankters, particularly dinoflagellates. We propose thatdiatoms stick more efficiently than latex beads to the mucusof N.scintillans and that dinoflagellates reduce fatal contactbehaviorally. We conclude that N.scintillans is an interceptionfeeder and that the high ascent velocity accounts for encounterswith prey. However, the flow field around the cell-mucus complexis too complicated to be described accurately by simple geometricmodels. Fluid shear (0.7–1.8 s–1 had a negativeimpact on feeding rates, which were much less than predictedby models. Noctiluca scintillans can survive starvation forlong periods (>3 weeks), it can grow at low concentrationsof prey (-15 µg C l–1), but growth saturates onlyat very high prey concentrations of 500–1000 µgC l–1 or more. We demonstrate how the functional biologyof N.scintillans is consistent with its spatial and seasonaldistribution, which is characterized by persistence in the plankton,blooms in association with high concentrations of diatoms, andsurface accumulation during quiescent periods or exponentialdecline in abundance with depth during periods of turbulentmixing.  相似文献

Interactions between bacteria and species of harmful and/or toxic algae are potentially important factors affecting both the population dynamics and the toxicity of these algae. Recent reports of bacteria lethal to certain harmful algal bloom (HAB) species, coupled with a rapidly evolving interest in attempting to minimize the adverse effects of HABs through various prevention, control, and mitigation strategies, have focused attention on defining the role of algicidal bacteria in bloom termination. The aim of the present study was to determine whether algicidal bacteria active against Gymnodinium breve Davis, a dinoflagellate responsible for frequent and protracted red tides in the Gulf of Mexico, are present in the waters of the west Florida shelf. To date, we have isolated two bacterial strains from this region lethal to G. breve and have begun to characterize the algicidal activity of one of these strains, 41-DBG2. This bacterium, a yellow-pigmented, gram-negative rod, was isolated from waters containing no detectable G. breve cells, suggesting that such bacteria are part of the ambient microbial community and are not restricted to areas of high G. breve abundance. Strain 41-DBG2 produced a dissolved algicidal compound(s) that was released into the growth medium, and the algicide was effective against the four Gulf of Mexico G. breve isolates tested as well as a closely related HAB species that also occurs in this region, Gymnodinium mikimotoi Miyake et Kominami ex Oda. Nonetheless, data showing that a nontoxic isolate of Gymnodinium sanguineum Hirasaka from Florida Bay was not affected indicate that the algicidal activity of this bacterium does exhibit a degree of taxonomic specificity. Our efforts are currently being directed at resolving several critical issues, including the identity of the algicide(s), the mechanisms regulating its production and ability to discriminate between target algal species, and how the growth rate of 41-DBG2 is affected by the presence of G. breve cells. We have also proposed a conceptual model for interactions between algicidal bacteria and their target species to serve as a testable framework for ensuing field studies.  相似文献

The toxic dinoflagellate Karenia mikimotoi has been well-known for causing large-scale and dense harmful algal blooms (HABs) in coastal waters worldwide and serious economic loss in aquaculture and fisheries and other adverse effects on marine ecosystems. Whether K. mikimotoi forms resting cysts has been a puzzling issue regarding to the mechanisms of bloom initiation and geographic expansion of this species. We provide morphological and molecular confirmation of sexually produced thin-walled resting cysts by K. mikimotoi based on observations of laboratory cultures and their direct detection in marine sediments. Light and scanning electron microscopy evidences for sexual reproduction include attraction and pairing of gametes, gamete fusion, formation of planozygote and thin-walled cyst, and the documentation of the thin-walled cyst germination processes. Evidence for cysts in marine sediments was in three aspects: positive PCR detection of cysts using species-specific primers in the DNA extracted from whole sediments; fluorescence in situ hybridization detection of cysts using FISH probes; and single-cell PCR sequencing for cysts positively labeled with FISH probes. The existence of sexually produced, thin-walled resting cysts by K. mikimotoi provides a possible mechanism accounting for the initiation of annually recurring blooms at certain regions and global expansion of the species during the past decades.  相似文献

Hydrology and trophic relationships are frequently reported for inducing changes in mesozooplankton communities. This study investigated the distribution and abundance of mesozooplankton in the boundary waters between the East China Sea and the Taiwan Strait. Samples were collected using a NOR-PAC zooplankton net towed horizontally at a depth of 2 m, at eight stations along a transect, in March (spring) and October (autumn) 2005. The abundance of mesozooplankton was significantly higher during autumn than spring. Densities of many groups (e.g., Noctiluca scintillans, pteropods, copepods, mysids, euphausiids, and other larva) increased in October. During both seasons, copepods represented more than 50% of the total zooplankton abundance. Noctiluca scintillans, appendicularians, and Calanus sinicus were dominant in spring, indicating their association with the cold waters of the East China Coastal Current. Appendicularians and N. scintillans were mainly associated with the coastal waters of Taiwan; whereas C. sinicus was concentrated in the offshore waters along the coast of Mainland China. Chaetognaths, Temora turbinata, Acrocalanus spp., and radiolarians were dominant in autumn, showing their association with the warm waters of the Kuroshio Branch Current. Oncaea venusta was relatively abundant during both seasons. Our study shows that, in addition to the influence of seasonal changes in the water masses, the distribution and composition of mesozooplankton are highly influenced by trophic interactions between zooplankton taxa, in the boundary waters of the Taiwan Strait and the East China Sea.  相似文献
