A cladistic analysis of the major groups of early metatherian mammals shows that the Deltatheroida and South American dog-like Borhyaenoidea are closely related and are placed in a new supercohort Deltatheralia. while all other metatherians are placed in the supercohort Marsupialia. A reassessment of Early Cretaceous mammals with tribosphenic molars shows that metatherians and eutherians apparently evolved independently from a peramuran-like ancestor, and an entoconid. distinctly basined talonid and large protocone were acquired separately in each group. Consequently. the Tribosphenida ( sensu McKenna) is apparently paraphyletic. Aegialodontia are regarded as structurally ancestral to Metatheria but not Eutheria. The known fossil record supports the view that differentation of the stocks which gave rise to metatherians and eutherians apparently occurred in Late Jurassic or Early Cretaceous time.  相似文献

A lower molar of Sulestes sp., a deltatheridiid from the Coniacian of Uzbekistan, is described. The Deltatheroididae new fam. is erected. The Deltatheroididae and Deltatheridiidae are assigned to the order Deltatheroida Kielan-Jaworowska 1982 and it is argued that the Deltatheroida are metatherians, a sister group of Marsupialia. The Deltatheroida have at least an incipient alisphenoid bulla, three premolars sharply differentiated morphologically from four molars, a very large stylar area and the protoconid higher than the metaconid. They differ from known Cretaceous marsupials in having a tendency to lose the last molar, in having a small protocone, a narrow and short talonid, and a hypoconulid and entoconid not approximated. Known deltatheroidan taxa are compared. Relationships of the Deltatheroida and Aegialodontia are discussed. The order Thysanoptera is composed of cosmopolitan phytophagous and predaceous insects with diverse life histories, behaviors and habits. This order is currently thought to form a trichotomy with Hemiptera and Psocodea; Hemiptera and Thysanoptera are considered to be sister groups. The interrelationships within Thysanoptera remain unclear and cytotaxonomic studies are scarce in thrips. We report, for the first time, chromosomal data on seven species of thrips collected from a semi-arid region in the States of Bahia and Pernambuco (Northeast Brazil). A distinctive chromosomal pattern was observed in Thysanoptera when compared to other members within the infraclass Paraneoptera. Considerable karyotypic differences were also found within genera and species of Thysanoptera. Based on these data, we suggest that Paraneoptera forms a polyphyletic group and that Terebrantia and Tubulifera should be regarded as sister groups. The high chromosomal variability observed in Thysanoptera indicates that chromosomal rearrangements have played a key role in their speciation pathways.  相似文献

Spectral correlation analysis of the EEG was used to study the organization of the rhythmic electrical activity (EA) of the cerebral cortex in normal children aged seven to eight and nine to ten years and children with the two types of functional immaturity of cerebral regulatory systems most common at this age, namely, fronto-thalamic regulatory system immaturity (IFTS) and brainstem nonspecific activation system immaturity (deficiency) (DNA). Statistical comparison (ANOVA) of these groups of children with respect to the absolute and relative α-and ?-band spectral powers of the background EEGs of 12 cortical areas showed the specific features of the effects of functional immaturity of regulatory systems at different levels on the cortical rhythmic EA pattern at rest. DNA led to a significant increase in the absolute spectral power of α and ? waves recorded in all derivations in both age groups, which indicated a generalized decrease in cortex activation in these children. IFTS caused a significant decrease in the relative strength of α waves and an increase in the strength of ? waves. Taking into account the results of ontogenetic studies, this may be regarded as evidence for a relative underdevelopment of cortical rhythm-generating networks. The absolute spectral powers of both α and ? waves were decreased in all groups of children by nine to ten years of age, which indicated that nonspecific activation was enhanced in the age interval studied. Significant changes were observed in children with functional immaturity of regulatory systems. In children with DNA, the age-related increase in cortex activation was expressed as a significant increase in the α-rhythm peak frequency. In children with IFTS, by nine to ten years of age, both the absolute and relative strengths of ? waves were decreased in most cortical areas studied, which may be regarded as the progressive formation of cortical rhythm-generating mechanisms.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between the morphologic features of endometrial adenocarcinoma cells in peritoneal fluids (effusions and washings) and macroscopic intraabdominal adenocarcinoma at laparotomy as well as prognosis. STUDY DESIGN: Seventy-one patients with endometrial adenocarcinoma who showed positive peritoneal cytology at laparotomy were clinically divided into three groups: 25 patients with macroscopic neoplastic seeding in the peritoneal cavity (type 1), 38 patients without macroscopic peritoneal metastasis who survived with no evidence of disease (type 2) and 8 patients without macroscopic peritoneal metastasis who later developed recurrence of adenocarcinoma (type 3). Morphologic features of the adenocarcinoma cells in smears of peritoneal fluids were examined. RESULTS: Most of the smears from type 1 patients showed moderate to high cellularity, scalloped edges of cell clusters and isolated adenocarcinoma cells, whereas these features were seldom observed in type 2 patients. Although not all type 3 patients demonstrated these three features, patients in the series whose specimens exhibited none of the three features did not show any peritoneal lesions or have a recurrence of their disease. CONCLUSION: The finding of endometrial adenocarcinoma cells exhibiting high cellularity, scalloped edge of cell clusters and isolated cells in smears of peritoneal fluid is associated with the presence of intraabdominal macroscopic metastatic lesions and could be regarded as a risk factor for intraabdominal recurrence of carcinoma.  相似文献

Defining a microbial community and identifying bacteria, at least at the genus level, is a first step in predicting the behavior of a microbial community in bioremediation. In biological treatment systems, the most dominating groups observed are Pseudomonas, Moraxella, Acinetobactor, Burkholderia, and Alcaligenes. Our interest lies in identifying the distinguishing features of these bacterial groups based on their 16S rDNA sequence data, which could be used further for generating genus-specific probes. Accordingly, 20 sequences representing different species from each genus above were retrieved, which constituted a training set. A 16-dimensional feature vector comprised of transition probabilities of nucleotides was considered and each sampled sequence was expressed in terms of these features. A stepwise feature selection method was used to identify features that are distinct across the species of these five groups. Wilk's lambda selection criterion was used and resulted in a subset with six distinguishing features. The discriminating efficacy of this subset was tested through multiple group discriminant analysis. Two linear composites, as a function of these features, could discriminate the test set of forty-five sequences from these groups with 95% accuracy, thereby ascertaining the relevance of the identified features. The geometric representation of feature correlation in the reduced discriminant space demonstrated the dominance of identified features in specific groups. These features independently or in combination could be used to generate genus-specific patterns to design probes, so as to develop a tracking tool for the selected group of bacteria.  相似文献

Transposable elements (TEs) are ubiquitous components of all living organisms, and in the course of their coexistence with their respective host geneomes, these parasitc DNAs have played important roles in the evolution of complex genetic networks. The interaction between mobile DNAs and their host genomes are quite diverse, ranging from modifications of gene structure and regulation to alterations in general genome architecture. Thus during evolutionary time these elements can be regarded as natural molecular tools in shaping the organization, structure, and function of eukaryotic genes and genomes. Based on their intrinsic properties and features, mobile DNAs are widely applied at present as a technical “toolbox”, essential for studying a diverse spectrum of biological questions. In this review, we aim to summarize both the evolutionary impact of TEs on geneome evolution and their valuable and diverse methodological applications as molecular tools.  相似文献

In Europe, the occurrence of familial melanoma in combination with the occurrence of dysplastic nevi in melanoma patients has been reported by groups from Scotland, France, Italy, and The Netherlands. The major publications of these groups are briefly mentioned and summarized. This report specifically describes nine extensive Dutch pedigrees. Clinical an genetic studies were performed in kindreds among whom three or more individuals with melanoma occurred in at least two consecutive generations. Three hundred sixty-two living persons older than 10 years were screened. The mean number of family members was 60, which makes these pedigrees preeminently suited for genetic studies. Spouses were not included in the study. One hundred eighty individuals were recognized as gene carriers. After correction for bias of ascertainment, we calculated a segregation rate of 0.45, compatible with dominant inheritance. Of the 180 living or alive at the start of the study, 40 had a melanoma, 118 had dysplastic nevi, and 22 were regarded as obligate gene carriers on the basis of their position in the pedigree. The finding of nonpenetrance and reduced penetrance of the characteristic phenotype of the dysplastic nevus syndrome has important consequences for daily practice. When a family is requested to attend the pigmented lesion clinic, all members have an a priori risk of 50% of carrying the gene. Individuals without any abnormalities form the majority, and cases of nonpenetrance and low penetrance are mixed in with the seemingly normal cases. The consequence for our research group was to follow all family members until it is possible to distinguish definitely gene carriers from normal family members. Other malignancies occurred at an increased rate among these families. In two families, the occurrence of several kinds of cancer was obvious. Molluscum contagiosum is a common and self-limiting viral infection, that in HIV+ patients courses as an opportunist affection with atypical clinical features. Impaired cell-mediated immune response could be involved in such atypical growth. We evaluated the density and area of Langerhans cells (LC) using S-100 immunohistochemistry in seven atypical molluscum contagiosum. LC density was quantified by three different methods using computer-assisted morphometry as well as estimating the relative area of LC with respect to epidermal area. Results were compared with two control groups (normal skin specimens and molluscum contagiosum affecting non-AIDS healthy patients). We found a virtual absence of LC in areas of molluscum lesions affecting both HIV+ and non-AIDS patients. Likewise we observed an evident decrease in LC density in perilesional epidermis of atypical molluscum with respect to both control groups. Upon comparing the counts and areas, we observed that this reduction in LC count was statistically significant only when considering LC related to length of basement membrane in atypical molluscum with respect to normal skin specimens. Our finding of a reduced number of LC in the perilesional epidermis of HIV+ patients with atypical molluscum could explain the high frequency and clinical challenge of molluscum contagiosum in immunocompromised people. In spite of these results, further studies of LC kinetics and functions are required to precisely elucidate their role in the course of molluscum contagiosum in HIV+ patients.  相似文献

Of 121 consecutive adult recipients of cadaver renal transplants who were treated with low dose steroids and azathioprine, 23 developed active cytomegalovirus infections. These 23 patients were divided into three groups on the basis of their symptoms related to the infection: five patients had no renal, respiratory, or haematological abnormalities; seven had renal dysfunction; and nine had renal dysfunction plus respiratory or haematological abnormalities. Two patients were regarded as a separate group because their infections occurred two to four weeks after graft nephrectomy. All but three of the patients produced IgM or IgG lymphocytotoxins during their infections. In the patients with mild infections and in control patients without infections, however, these lymphocytotoxins were predominantly IgG antibodies that were not precipitated by 3.5% macrogol (polyethylene glycol). In contrast, 12 of the 16 patients with renal dysfunction during their infections had broadly reactive IgM lymphocytotoxins. These IgM lymphocytotoxins lysed T as well as B lymphocytes at 22 degrees C and were precipitated by 3.5% macrogol, suggesting that they were circulating as immune complexes. Rheumatoid factors were found in sera from nine patients with cytomegalovirus infections, seven of whom developed leukopenia or pneumonia, or both, in addition to renal dysfunction. Some of these immune responses associated with cytomegalovirus infection in transplant recipients may be genetically controlled since 10 of 11 patients positive for HLA-DR3 or DR7 produced IgM lymphocytotoxins.  相似文献

The investigation area has been examined by means of a regularly-spaced sampling technique. With the sample plots as attributes, association analysis (ASSI/AN) and inverse information analysis (INFO) have been employed to estimate associations between pairs of species (ASSI/AN) and to establish species groups (INFO). The 50 most frequently occurring species in the sample set were selected for these purposes. Based on INFO and ASSI/AN results and ecological measurements' indication, fourteen species groups have been established and discussed.
Divisive information analysis (DIVINF) has been employed in the classification of sample plots. The 75 most frequently occurring species were selected as attributes. Twenty DIVINF groups were established. Similarity coefficients were calculated between all these groups in order to reexamine their internal relationships. Based on these coefficients and based on the species groups and the ecological measurements' indication, DIVINF groups have been linked to establish vegetation blocks, which are regarded as the basic vegetation units in the present study. Traditional Fennoscandian phytosociological notions are used in the discussion of the four blocks and in comparisons of the blocks with other mire vegetation communities described.  相似文献

The application of different current species concepts to the predominantly apomicticR. auricomus complex (goldilocks) is discussed. As with other uniparental reproducing organisms, biological species concepts are hardly applicable in apomictic groups. Information on reproductive systems, phenetic and ecological differentation, and evolutionary traits favour an “agamospecies” concept. It is argued that agamic lineages in goldilocks can be treated neither as subspecific taxa, nor as hybrids. A general viewpoint is proposed that species are stable phases within a continuous process of diversification of ancestral-descendent lineages. Constancy of progeny, similarity of phenotype, and ecogeographical niches of organisms are regarded as the most important operational criteria for grouping and ranking of species. Mode of reproduction is seen as a feature of a species — not as a criterion for its definition. Internal stability of features is regarded as more important for species definition than the features themselves.  相似文献

Hexaploid wheat possesses 42 chromosomes derived from its three ancestral genomes. The 21 pairs of chromosomes can be further divided into seven groups of six chromosomes (one chromosome pair being derived from each of the three ancestral genomes), based on the similarity of their gene order. Previous studies have revealed that, during anther development, the chromosomes associate in 21 pairs via their centromeres. The present study reveals that, as a prelude to meiosis, these 21 chromosome pairs in hexaploid (and tetraploid) wheat associate via the centromeres into seven groups as the telomeres begin to cluster. This results in the association of multiple chromosomes, which then need to be resolved as meiosis progresses. The formation of the seven chromosome clusters now explains the occasional occurrence of remnants of multiple associations, which have been reported at later stages of meiosis in hexaploid (and tetraploid) wheat. Importantly, the chromosomes have the opportunity to be resorted via these multiple interactions. As meiosis progresses, such interactions are resolved through the action of loci such as Ph1, leaving chromosomes as homologous pairs.  相似文献

There is extensive discussion of the ethical, social, economic and political issues associated with the use of technologies based on DNA techniques. Many of these debates are premised on the assumption that DNA, and the genetic information that may be derived from it, have unique features which raise new social and ethical issues. In this paper it is argued that several of the features associated with DNA which are sometimes regarded as unique are shared with other biological materials. Others owe more to the cultural image of DNA and some of the metaphors used to discuss it in biology and in wider debates than to the biological properties of DNA. The paper discusses the concepts of genetic material and genetic information and the social construction of DNA in relation to forensic DNA databases, paternity testing and genetic testing for disease. The paper concludes by suggesting that there are seven areas where issues related to DNA and genetic information are at least relatively distinct.  相似文献

Pinus krempfii Lecomte is a morphologically and ecologically unique pine, endemic to Vietnam. It is regarded as vulnerable species with distribution limited to just two provinces: Khanh Hoa and Lam Dong. Although a few phylogenetic studies have included this species, almost nothing is known about its genetic features. In particular, there are no studies addressing the levels and patterns of genetic variation in natural populations of P. krempfii. In this study, we sampled 57 individuals from six natural populations of P. krempfii and analyzed their sequence variation in ten nuclear gene regions (approximately 9 kb) and 14 mitochondrial (mt) DNA regions (approximately 10 kb). We also analyzed variation at seven chloroplast (cp) microsatellite (SSR) loci. We found very low haplotype and nucleotide diversity at nuclear loci compared with other pine species. Furthermore, all investigated populations were monomorphic across all mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) regions included in our study, which are polymorphic in other pine species. Population differentiation at nuclear loci was low (5.2%) but significant. However, structure analysis of nuclear loci did not detect genetically differentiated groups of populations. Approximate Bayesian computation (ABC) using nuclear sequence data and mismatch distribution analysis for cpSSR loci suggested recent expansion of the species. The implications of these findings for the management and conservation of P. krempfii genetic resources were discussed.  相似文献

A comparative study of public gene-expression data of seven types of cancers (breast, colon, kidney, lung, pancreatic, prostate and stomach cancers) was conducted with the aim of deriving marker genes, along with associated pathways, that are either common to multiple types of cancers or specific to individual cancers. The analysis results indicate that (a) each of the seven cancer types can be distinguished from its corresponding control tissue based on the expression patterns of a small number of genes, e.g., 2, 3 or 4; (b) the expression patterns of some genes can distinguish multiple cancer types from their corresponding control tissues, potentially serving as general markers for all or some groups of cancers; (c) the proteins encoded by some of these genes are predicted to be blood secretory, thus providing potential cancer markers in blood; (d) the numbers of differentially expressed genes across different cancer types in comparison with their control tissues correlate well with the five-year survival rates associated with the individual cancers; and (e) some metabolic and signaling pathways are abnormally activated or deactivated across all cancer types, while other pathways are more specific to certain cancers or groups of cancers. The novel findings of this study offer considerable insight into these seven cancer types and have the potential to provide exciting new directions for diagnostic and therapeutic development.  相似文献

The Entocytheridae is a cytheroidean family that is known for its commensal mode of life on other crustaceans. However, due to their small size and large sexual dimorphism in the sizes of the carapace, the ontogeny of the entocytherids is poorly understood. This paper documents the basic body plans and pore systems of the entocytherid Uncinocythere occidentalis (Kozloff & Whitman, 1954) Hart, 1962 through ontogeny and compares them with other podocope groups. U. occidentalis has seven juvenile stages, one less than other cytheroidean groups. The general appearance of the limbs during the ontogeny of U. occidentalis is similar to that of other podocope ostracods, such as Limnocythere inopinata (Cytheroidea) Loxoconcha japonica (Cytheroidea),Eucypris virens (Cypridoidea), and Neonesidea oligodentata (Bairdioidea) with the exception of the maxillula. The adult maxillula of U. occidentalis is reduced to just a palp and third masticatory lobe (endite), and the third masticatory lobe and branchial plate of this appendage form later in the ontogeny compared with other podocope species (i.e., these features show post displacemental ontogenetic development). The number of the pore systems of the earliest juvenile (A-7) of U. occidentalis is 10, and is different from that of the corresponding stage of other cytheroidean groups which have 9. This fact, together with the different mode of development of the maxillula, indicates that the entocytherids are not only highly specialized to their commensal mode of life but that they are also phylogenetically distant from most other cytheroidean families, possibly differentiating from the others during the early evolution of the cytherids.  相似文献

In this study spontaneous behavior and endocrine parameters were compared between the domestic guinea pig (Cavia aperea f. porcellus) and its wild ancestor, the cavy (Cavia aperea), to elucidate the process of domestication in this species. In 120 h of observation time the behavior of five groups of wild and seven groups of domestic guinea pigs, each consisting of one adult male and two adult females, was analyzed quantitatively. To assess the activities of the pituitary-adrenocortical (PAC), the pituitary-gonadal (PG), and the sympathetic-adrenomedullary (SAM) systems, serum cortisol, testosterone, epinephrine, and norepinephrine concentrations, as well as adrenal tyrosine hydroxylase activities, were determined in males of both forms. The following significant differences between wild cavies and domestic guinea pigs were found: the domesticated animals displayed less aggressive but more sociopositive and more male courtship behavior than their wild ancestors. In addition, they were distinctly less attentive to their physical environment than the wild cavies. The basal activity of the SAM system, as well as the reactivity of the SAM and the PAC systems, was distinctly reduced in the domesticated animals. In contrast, the basal activity of the PAC system did not differ between both forms. The activity of the PG system was significantly higher in males of the domestic guinea pig than in male wild cavies. Thus, in guinea pigs the process of domestication has led to typical behavioral traits-reduced aggressiveness, increased social tolerance-which have also been found in comparisons between wild and domestic forms of other species. The decreased reactivity of the organism's stress axes can be regarded as a physiological mechanism which helps domesticated animals to adjust to man-made housing conditions.  相似文献
