Aims (1) To determine the relationship between local and regional anthropoid primate species richness. (2) To establish the spatial and temporal scale at which the ultimate processes influencing patterns of primate species coexistence operate. Location Continental landmasses of Africa, South America and Asia (India to China, and all islands as far south as New Guinea). Methods The local–regional species richness relationship for anthropoid primates is estimated by regressing local richness against regional richness (independent variable). Local richness is estimated in small, replicate local assemblages sampled in regions that vary in total species richness. A strong linear relationship is taken as evidence that local assemblages are unsaturated and local richness results from proportional sampling of the regional pool. An asymptotic curvilinear relationship is interpreted to reflect saturated communities, where strong biotic interactions limit local richness and local processes structure the species assemblage. As a further test of the assumption of local assemblage saturation, we looked for density compensation in high‐density local primate assemblages. Results The local–regional species richness relationship was linear for Africa and South America, and the slope of the relationship did not differ between the two continents. For Asia, curvilinearity best described the relationship between local and regional richness. Asian primate assemblages appear to be saturated and this is confirmed by density compensation among Asian primates. However, density compensation was also observed among African primates. The apparent assemblage saturation in Asia is not a species–area phenomenon related to the small size of the isolated islands and their forest blocks, since similar low local species richness occurs in large forests on mainland and/or peninsular Asia. Main conclusions In Africa and South America local primate assemblage composition appears to reflect the influence of biogeographic processes operating on regional spatial scales and historical time scales. In Asia the composition of primate assemblages are by‐and‐large subject to ecological constraint operating over a relatively small spatial and temporal scale. The possible local influence of the El Niño Southern Oscillations on the evolution and selection of life‐history characteristics among Asian primates, and in determining local patterns of primate species coexistence, warrants closer inspection.  相似文献

No previous study has directly investigated whether lichens show latitudinal patterns of diversity. We used vouchered data and MaxEnt models to compile richness estimates (species, genera, and families) across the western coastal region of the US. Nonparametric multiplicative regression then sought the geographic factors or interactions of factors that explained the most variability in lichen richness. Collection density was the strongest predictor of raw estimates of richness at all taxonomic ranks. Latitude was the overall single-best predictor of MaxEnt modeled species, generic, and familial richness in all models. MaxEnt modeling was necessary to minimize collection bias, which otherwise obscured any other patterns of diversity. While geography explained a sizable portion of variance in lichen richness, it does not trend linearly with latitude. Instead, lichen diversity may be influenced by a compilation of regional and local factors including climate, disturbance, and competition.  相似文献

In a series of experiments we have investigated the perception of Moiré patterns as a function of spatial density, rotation and temporal display parameters. Results indicate that the local correlation extraction process involved in the perception of these patterns is not feature specific, yet is driven by excitatory (correlated) and inhibitory (uncorrelated) information under a form of spatial summation. These results are comparable with recent results on texture discrimination where texture interpoint distance distributions (dipole statistics) have also been discovered to have excitatory and inhibitory components.  相似文献

The brown-headed cowbird (Molothrusater) is a generalist obligate brood parasite. Despite intensive study and growing concern over the negative impact of cowbird parasitism on populations of many hosts, very little is known about the factors influencing community-wide patterns of cowbird parasitism. Using systematic nest searches, nest parasitism was studied over two breeding seasons at a study site in northeastern Illinois encompassing grassland, forest-edge, and forest habitat, supporting a diverse avian community. Parasitism was observed for 18 out of 34 altricial bird species found nesting at the study site. A total of 299 cowbird eggs and nestlings were found in 191 of a total of 593 nests. Analyses revealed several ecological and behavioral factors associated with frequency of parasitism and the resulting distribution of cowbird eggs. Much higher frequencies of parasitism were found in edge and forest habitats than in grassland. Within the edge habitat, open nests were parasitized significantly more often than cavity nests. Among open nests in the edge habitat, the two largest species were never parasitized. Host behavior, particularly egg-ejection behavior, was associated with a reduced observed frequency of parasitism, but at least three species known to eject cowbird eggs were sometimes parasitized. For six common hosts capable of rearing cowbirds, we found no correlation between level of parasitism and host nest-survivorship, suggesting that fine-grained assessments of host quality by female cowbirds do not influence patterns of parasitism among acceptable host species, or that differences in host quality are not great and/or predictable enough for such fine-grained assessments. Our results suggest that when a variety of possible nests are available, the level of parasitism on a particular species is a balance between a␣cowbird's preference for a particular species and the effectiveness of host species' defenses. A conceptual model was developed that incorporates the observed correlation of cowbird eggs or nestlings with habitat, nest-type, host species' body mass, and host behavioral defenses. Additional community-wide studies of cowbird parasitism will test if this model is applicable to other avian communities. Received: 20 December 1996 / Accepted: 17 May 1997  相似文献

We have examined patterns of variation of several kinds of molecular markers (isozymes, RFLPs of ribosomal DNA and anonymous low-copy number DNA, RAPDs and microsatellites) and an adaptive trait [date of bud set in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.)]. The study included Finnish Scots pine populations (from latitude 60°N to 70°N) which experience a steep climatic gradient. Common garden experiments show that these populations are adapted to the location of their origin and genetically differentiated in adaptive quantitative traits, e.g. the date of bud set in first-year seedlings. In the northernmost population, bud set took place about 21 days earlier than in the southernmost population. Of the total variation in bud set, 36.4% was found among the populations. All molecular markers showed high levels of within-population variation, while differentiation among populations was low. Among all the studied markers, microsatellites were the most variable (He=0.77). Differences between populations were small, GST was less than 0.02. Our study suggests that molecular markers may be poor predictors of the population differentiation of quantitative traits in Scots pine, as exemplified here by bud-set date.  相似文献

Several mechanisms for biological invasions have been proposed, yet to date there is no common framework that can broadly explain patterns of invasion success among ecosystems with different resource availabilities. Ecological stoichiometry (ES) is the study of the balance of energy and elements in ecological interactions. This framework uses a multi‐nutrient approach to mass‐balance models, linking the biochemical composition of organisms to their growth and reproduction, which consequently influences ecosystem structure and functioning. We proposed a conceptual model that integrates hypotheses of biological invasions within a framework structured by fundamental principles of ES. We then performed meta‐analyses to compare the growth and production performances of native and invasive organisms under low‐ and high‐nutrient conditions in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Growth and production rates of invasive organisms (plants and invertebrates) under both low‐ and high‐nutrient availability were generally larger than those of natives. Nevertheless, native plants outperformed invasives in aquatic ecosystems under low‐nutrient conditions. We suggest several distinct stoichiometry‐based mechanisms to explain invasion success in low‐ versus high‐nutrient conditions; low‐nutrient conditions: higher resource‐use efficiency (RUE; C:nutrient ratios), threshold elemental ratios (TERs), and trait plasticity (e.g. ability of an organism to change its nutrient requirements in response to varying nutrient environmental supply); high‐nutrient conditions: higher growth rates and reproductive output related to lower tissue C:nutrient ratios, and increased trait plasticity. Interactions of mechanisms may also yield synergistic effects, whereby nutrient enrichment and enemy release have a disproportionate effect on invasion success. To that end, ES provides a framework that can help explain how chemical elements and energy constrain key physiological and ecological processes, which can ultimately determine the success of invasive organisms.  相似文献

With growing concerns about the impact of selective harvesting on natural populations, researchers encourage managers to implement harvest regimes that avoid or minimize the potential for demographic and evolutionary side effects. A seemingly intuitive recommendation is to implement harvest regimes that mimic natural mortality patterns. Using stochastic simulations based on a model of risk as a logistic function of a normally distributed biological trait variable, we evaluate the validity of this recommendation when the objective is to minimize the altering effect of harvest on the immediate post-mortality distribution of the trait. We show that, in the absence of compensatory mortality, harvest mimicking natural mortality leads to amplification of the biasing effect expected after natural mortality, whereas an unbiased harvest does not alter the post-mortality trait distribution that would be expected in the absence of harvest. Although our approach focuses only on a subset of many possible objectives for harvest management, it illustrates that a single strategy, such as hunting mimicking natural mortality, may be insufficient to address the complexities of different management objectives with potentially conflicting solutions.  相似文献

We studied the orientation perception of dot patterns with Moiré effect. The Moiré effect was achieved by rotating the original patterns over small angles. When the angle was increased the effect disappeared while the characteristics of orientation estimation remained unchanged. For relatively small angles the subjects performance can be described by a model based on the concept of least squared distance axis. For large angles of rotation this model has began to be unsufficient and a more refined model is proposed here.  相似文献

Awesome or ordinary? Global diversity patterns of oribatid mites   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Diversity of most above-ground organisms increases with decreasing latitude, but the biogeographical and macroecological diversity patterns of below-ground animals have been poorly studied. We investigated the latitudinal diversity gradient in a primarily below-ground living soil taxon, oribatid mites. Furthermore, oribatid mite species richness from islands and mainlainds was tested for correlation with the size of the respective area (island or mainland) to evaluate if their species–area relationships are similar to those of above-ground taxa. The results suggest that for oribatid mites 1) diversity increases from the boreal to the warm temperate region but not further to the tropics, and 2) species–area relationships for islands and mainlands are similar to those of above-ground taxa, but this is mainly caused by very small islands, such as Cocos islands, and very large islands, such as Madagascar. When these islands are excluded the species–area relationship strongly differs from those of typical islands. The results support the view that below-ground animal taxa are generalists that inhabit wide niches. Most small islands have relatively rich oribatid mite faunas, supporting the observation that a large number of species can coexist in a small area (high α-diversity).  相似文献

A mathematical model of dendritic branching patterns of cortical neurons is presented which describes the ontogenetic development as a function of space and time. Comparison with experimental data from the literature suggests strongly that the growth rate of a dendrite fluctuates around a mean value; the mean value is probably age-dependent. Furthermore, at the site of a bifurcation a variable delay in outgrowth for one of the two daughter segments is conjectured.  相似文献

Many European lakes are monitored according to the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD), with focus on phytoplankton biomass and species composition. However, the low-frequency WFD monitoring may miss short-term phytoplankton changes. This is an important issue because short-term extreme meteorological events (heat waves and heavy rain) are predicted to increase in frequency and intensity with climate change. We used records from Lake Mondsee (Austria) from 2009 to 2015 to test if a reduction from monthly to seasonal sampling affected the average annual phytoplankton biovolume. Furthermore, we combined inverted light microscopy, FlowCAM and flow cytometry to estimate the effect of sampling during extreme events on average phytoplankton biovolume. Relative to monthly sampling, seasonal sampling significantly overestimated phytoplankton biomass. A heat wave in 2015 and two episodes of heavy rain in 2015 and 2016 caused species-specific changes; biovolumes of chlorophytes and the filamentous cyanobacterium Planktothrix rubescens (De Candolle ex Gomont) Anagnostidis & Komárek increased significantly during the heat wave. Using live material with FlowCAM and flow cytometry, we detected small and fragile cells and colonies that were either ignored or underrepresented by analysing fixed samples with light microscopy. We suggest a modified sampling and analysis strategy to capture short-term changes within the phytoplankton community.  相似文献

Background

During the non-breeding period, many birds migrate to milder areas, found closer to the equator than their breeding sites. Opposite movements are very rare. In the Southern Ocean, the abundance of 13C declines markedly with more southern latitude, providing a characteristic 13C isoscape. This can be used as a tracer for the movement of seabirds between breeding and inter-breeding areas, by comparing stable isotope ratios of feathers grown at different times of the year.

Results

We studied seasonal movements of Thin-billed prions (Aves, Procellariiformes), breeding at the Subantarctic Falkland/Malvinas Islands, compared with those of Wilson's storm-petrels breeding in the Antarctic South Shetland Islands. The two species showed opposite migratory movements. While Wilson's storm-petrels moved to warmer waters north of the Drake Passage in winter, Thin-billed prions showed a reversed movement towards more polar waters. Carbon stable isotope ratios in recent and historical feathers indicated that poleward winter movements of Thin-billed prions were less common historically (45% in 1913-1915), and have only recently become dominant (92% in 2003-2005), apparently in response to warming sea temperatures.

Conclusions

This study shows that pelagic seabirds can rapidly change migration strategies within populations, including migration towards more poleward waters in winter.  相似文献

The idea of a unifying theory of biodiversity linking the diverse array of macroecological patterns into a common theoretical framework is very appealing. We explore this idea to examine currently proposed unified theories of biodiversity (UTBs) and their predictions. Synthesizing the literature on the macroecological patterns of mammals, we critically evaluate the evidence to support these theories. We find general qualitative support for the UTBs' predictions within mammals, but rigorous testing is hampered by the types of data typically collected in studies of mammals. In particular, abundance is rarely estimated for entire mammalian communities or of individual species in multiple locations, reflecting the logistical challenges of studying wild mammal populations. By contrast, there are numerous macroecological patterns (especially allometric scaling relationships) that are extremely well characterized for mammals, but which fall outside the scope of current UTBs. We consider how these theories might be extended to explain mammalian biodiversity patterns more generally. Specifically, we suggest that UTBs need to incorporate the dimensions of geographical space, species' traits and time to reconcile theory with pattern.  相似文献

The sequence of cyclin (proliferating cell nuclear antigen, PCNA), antigen staining throughout the cell cycle of African green monkey kidney cells (BS-C-1) has been determined by indirect immunofluorescence using PCNA autoantibodies specific for this protein. Patterns of cyclin staining observed between the beginning of S-phase and maximum DNA synthesis are similar to those reported in human AMA cells [(1985) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 82, 3262-3266], while those detected thereafter are significantly different; the most striking feature being the continuous staining of the nucleoli up to or very near the S/G2 border of the cell cycle. Using [3H]thymidine autoradiography and indirect immunofluorescence of the same cells we show a remarkable correlation between cyclin antigen distribution and topographical patterns of DNA synthesis. In addition, we present evidence showing that DNase I treatment of Triton-extracted monolayers abolishes cyclin antigen staining but does not result in a substantial release of this protein. Taken together the above observations argue for a role of cyclin in some aspect of DNA replication.  相似文献

A test of Allan's (1978) hypothesis about differential drift abundance of mayflies of the genus Baetis between night and day, and the size of larvae was performed at a mountain stream in Idaho. Palisades Creek, Idaho, contains a different species of mayfly, B. tricaudatus, and vertebrate predator, Salmo clarki, than Cement Creek, Colorado (B. bicaudatus, and brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis). Consequently it was not known if B. tricaudatus would exhibit a similar pattern as its congener in Cement Creek, with large instars tending to avoid daylight drift, as found by Allan (1978). However, similar results were observed in the present study. It appears that the earlier hypothesis may have generality for geographically distinct streams with a different vertebrate predator and mayfly prey. The existence of a similar pattern for chironomid larvae was also tested, however, no such pattern existed. This discrepency between taxa may be due to differential predation, or to inherent differences in drift abilities.  相似文献

Summary During five consecutive growing seasons (winters) ca. 110 plants of the desert geophyte Bellevalia desertorum were marked individually in a 25 m2 plot on a south-facing slope in the central Negev Desert of Israel. The number of rosette leaves of each plant was recorded, as well as whether it flowered and produced seeds. Multiple regression analysis of the data on the B. desertorum individuals showed that the reproductive state of a plant was determined by 1) its previous size and 2) the current conditions (rainfall), but not by previous conditions, nor by previous reproductive activity. Plant surveys supported these findings. These demographic results were consistent with the current understanding of the reproductive resource allocation pattern of B. desertorum. Flowering was most affected by rainfall until January of the same season, the number of leaves by rainfall until March and seed set was by the total annual amount. Surveys in populations ofB. eigii, a species of more mesic habitats in the Negev Desert suggested that in this species there is a negative effect of previous reproduction in combination with the previous and current conditions, which is also expected from its biomass partitioning pattern. The significance of demographic studies of individual plants in natural populations for the interpretation of experimentally determined resource partitioning patterns was discussed.  相似文献
