Ania Lindl. is a small genus of the tribe Collabieae subtribe Collabiinae (Orchidaceae). For the last 150 years, it has generally been treated as a synonym of Tainia Blume. In this study, we critically re-examined morphological characters that have been used to distinguish Ania from Tainia, and assessed the phylogeny of Tainia using morphological and palynological characters. Sequences of the nuclear ribosomal ITS, chloroplast trnL intron and combined DNA data sets were analysed to clarify the delimitation and the phylogeny of these groups. The morphological and palynological survey revealed a number of useful diagnostic characters which permit a clear definition of Ania, after the exclusion of a single taxonomically questionable species. Results confirmed that Ania is distinct from Tainia. Phylogenetic reconstructions based on molecular data provided the greatest resolution and produced a morphologically well differentiated clade of Ania. In addition to morphological and suggested palynological characters, the phylogenies were also supported by karyological evidence. Our results support the independent generic status of Ania. The genus name Ania is revived and re-established.

大方油栝楼(T.dafangensis)与小苞组(sect.

We conducted phylogenetic analyses of the sect. Caprini and its closely related sections within Astragalus. Analyses of a combined dataset including nrDNA ETS and three cpDNA markers using maximum parsimony and Bayesian inference from 44 species of sect. Caprini and its allied taxa yielded congruent relationships among several major lineages. These results largely disagree with previously recognized taxonomic groups, most notably in the following ways: (1) subsects. Caprini and Purpurascentes of sect. Caprini are not natural groups; (2) sects. Alopecuroidei and Laxiflori are nested within sect. Astragalus; and (3) subsect. Chronopus constitutes a separate phylogenetic lineage. Representatives of sects. Astragalus, Alopecuroidei, and Laxiflori share a common ancestor with that of sect. Caprini. Our studies indicate that Astragalus annularis is an outlier species for the genus Astragalus and sect. Caraganella is the first-diverging clade within the genus Astragalus. Results of these analyses are supported by morphology and suggest the need for new taxonomic delimitations, which are forthcoming. Key morphological characters were mapped onto the phylogenetic tree and discussed.

Systematics of the genus Isatis (Brassicaceae) is difficult and controversial, and previous studies were based solely on morphological characters. Sequence variation of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions and the 5.8S gene of nuclear ribosomal DNA (nrDNA) were analyzed using parsimony and Bayesian methods. Twenty-eight taxa of Isatis and related genera of the tribe Isatideae were sampled, including 20 Isatis species representing almost all major morphological lineages, all three species of Pachypterygium, two of nine species of Sameraria, and monospecific Boreava, Myagrum, and Tauscheria. Two well-supported clades were resolved in the ITS tree, and they demonstrate the artificiality of the present delimitation of the tribe. One clade includes I. emarginata, I. minima, I. trachycarpa, P. brevipes, P. multicaule, P. stocksii, and T. lasiocarpa. The second clade includes I. buschiana, the polymorphic I. cappadocica with five subspecies, I. gaubae, I. kotschyana, I. leuconeura, I. pachycarpa, I. takhtajanii, I. tinctoria, and S. armena. Pachypterygium is polyphyletic and, together with Boreava, Sameraria, and Tauscheria, all are nested within Isatis. This study is a continuation of our recent systematic survey based on seed-coat microsculpturing ( Moazzeni et al., 2007. Flora 202, 447–454) and reveals that fruit characters mapped onto the molecular tree show considerable convergence. The reliance on fruit characters alone in the delimitation of genera may well lead to erroneous phylogenetic results and thus to incorrect taxonomic conclusions.

Anaphalis is the largest Asian genus in the tribe Gnaphalieae (Asteraceae) and has its greatest species diversity in the eastern Himalayas. The nuclear internal and external transcribed spacers were sequenced for Anaphalis species, with an emphasis on the eastern Himalayan taxa to examine the monophyly and construct the phylogenetic relationships of and within the genus. The results suggest that all species of Anaphalis are nested with Helichrysum, showing a close relationship with a Mediterranean–Asian group of Helichrysum. Although the monophyly of Anaphalis is only weakly supported, two clades within the genus are well recognized, each consisting of two subgroups. The inferred phylogenetic relationships within Anaphalis correspond to the shape of leaf base, rather than the morphology of the capitula and phyllaries that are usually used for species delimitation and classification in the genus. All four subgroups of Anaphalis are common and diversified in the eastern Himalayas with multiple dispersals out of this region. The sole North American species of Anaphalis is best hypothesized to be the result of long-distance dispersal or overland migration via Bering land bridge from Asia. Our analyses suggest that the extant distribution of Anaphalis has most likely resulted one radiation into the eastern Himalayas followed by repeated independent dispersals and/or radiations mostly into eastern Asia but also into the western Himalayas, North America, and southeast Asia.

The Menispermaceae family contains ca. 72 genera with 450 species that are almost entirely tropical. Its phylogeny at the tribal level has never been examined using molecular data. Here we used DNA sequences of the chloroplast matK gene and trnL-F regions, and the nuclear ITS region to study the delimitation and position of the tribe Menispermeae within the family and its subtribal monophyletic groups. Family-wide phylogenetic analyses of the chloroplast data produced two strongly supported clades. The first clade contains two subclades: Coscinieae including Arcangelisia and Anamirta, and Tinosporeae sensu lato including Fibraureae, supported by morphological characters, such as traits of the cotyledon, stylar scar and embryo. The second clade consists of the tribes Menispermeae sensu DC. and Tiliacoreae Miers. All our analyses surprisingly recognized that tribe Menispermeae is not monophyletic unless tribe Tiliacoreae is included, suggesting that characters of cotyledon and stylar scar are very important for the infrafamilial classification, and that endosperm presence vs. absence was over-emphasized in traditionally tribal division of the family. Our topologies indicate a secondary loss of endosperm. The monophyly of two subtribes of the tribe Menispermeae, Stephaniinae and Cissampelinae, is supported by the cpDNA and ITS data, as well as by morphological characters, including aperture types and shapes, and colpal membrane features of pollen grains, and sepal number of male flowers. The Cocculinae was recognized as a paraphyletic group containing the remaining genera of the tribe Menispermeae.

Since the summer of 2010, a discomycete with erumpent apothecia associated with a leaf blight of Miscanthus leaves, were often collected. The morphological characteristics of the fungus suggested it was a member of the Helotiales rather than the Rhytismatales and this was supported by a phylogenetic analysis. Based on a morphological comparison with the type specimen of Naemacyclus culmigenus, currently known from Poaceae (Andropogon and Panicum), it was identified as N. culmigenus, new to Japan. The molecular phylogenetic analysis showed that the generic delimitation of Naemacyclus and related species requires clarification, as does their higher classification within the Leotiomycetes.

A phylogenetic tree was constructed by sequencing rbcL genes of 33 species representing 19 genera of Ranunculaceae, and three related species, Mahonia bealei, Mahonia fortunei and Nandina domestica. The results showed that the rbcL sequences of these Ranunculaceae range from 1,346 bp to 1,393 bp. The results based on the phylogenetic tree indicated that Caltha and Trollius should not be put in the same tribe, and a close relationship between Adonis and Trollius is supported by our research, while Aquilegia should be in Thalictroideae. In combination with the morphological and chemical evidence, the generic classification of Ranunculaceae should be revised into five subfamilies: Hydrastidoideae, Coptidoideae, Helleboroideae, Thalictroideae and Ranunculoideae. We demonstrate that the rbcL gene is of great value for investigating generic to subfamilial relationships in Ranunculaceae.

Carthamus (Asteraceae) includes both crop (Carthamus tinctorius, safflower) and weedy species. Despite previous studies, many outstanding questions remain regarding the phylogenetic surroundings of safflower, especially in relation to weedy species. Here we investigated relationships within Carthamus using a tiered approach examining sequence and microsatellite data. First, nuclear and chloroplast sequences were analyzed from 37 accessions of 16 species. Maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian inference confirm two well supported clades, corresponding to sect. Atractlyis and sect. Carthamus, the latter of which includes safflower. Because sequence data provided limited resolution within the clades, microsatellite markers were used to investigate relationships within sect. Carthamus. Both sequence and microsatellite data reveal that most traditionally recognized species are not monophyletic. Microsatellite data indicate that Carthamus palaestinus is the closest relative of cultivated safflower.

Tribe Theeae, which includes some economically important and widely grown plants, such as beverage tea and a number of woody ornamentals, is the largest member of the Theaceae family. Using five genomic regions (chloroplast: atpI-H, matK, psbA5''R-ALS-11F, rbcL; nuclear: LEAFY) and 30 species representing four of the five genera in this tribe (Apterosperma, Camellia, Polyspora, and Pyrenaria s.l.), we investigated the phylogeny of Theeae and assessed the delimitation of genera in the tribe. Our results showed that Polyspora was monophyletic and the sister of the three other genera of Theeae investigated, Camellia was paraphyletic and Pyrenaria was polyphyletic. The inconsistent phylogenetic placement of some species of Theeae between the nuclear and chloroplast trees suggested widespread hybridization between Camellia and Pyrenaria, Polyspora and Parapyrenaria. These results indicate that hybridization, rather than morphological homoplasy, has confused the current classification of Theeae. In addition, the phylogenetic placement and possible allies of Laplacea are also discussed.

Abstract Chirita D. Don, a large genus in the subfamily Cyrtandroideae of Gesneriaceae, has been the subject of much debate whether it is a natural group or not. In addition, the highly heterogeneous Chirita has also been very problematic with regard to delimitation and subdivision. Here we used the nrDNA internal transcribed spacer and cpDNA trnL‐F for molecular phylogenetic analaysis, combined with morphological data. Our results suggest that Chirita is an artificial, polyphyletic genus. The most important character that defines Chirita, the dorso‐ventrally oblique and bilamellar stigma, has evolved convergently in different clades of diandrous Cyrtandroideae. Chirita sensu stricto only includes the species of Chirita sect. Chirita, whereas Chirita sect. Microchirita is an independent clade located at the basal node of the phylogenetic tree. Chirita sect. Liebigia is closely related to Didymocarpus with an entire stigma unlike other species of Chirita. The species of Chirita sect. Gibbosaccus, Chiritopsis, Primulina, and Wentsaiboea form a monophyletic group that is sister to a strongly supported clade comprising four monotypic genera Paralagarosolen, Calcareoboea, Petrocodon, and Tengia. We further analyzed the morphological evolution of Chirita and identified a series of morphological synapomorphies for the monophyletic groups revealed herein, and thereby provide a taxonomic treatment in this study.

The classification of the hyperdiverse true bug family Miridae is far from settled, and is particularly contentious for the cosmopolitan subfamily Bryocorinae. The morphological diversity within the subfamily is pronounced, and a lack of explicit character formulation hampers stability in the classification. Molecular partitions are few and only a handful of taxa have been sequenced. In this study the phylogeny of the subfamily Bryocorinae has been analysed based on morphological data alone, with an emphasis on evaluating the tribe Dicyphina sensu Schuh, 1976, within which distinct groups of taxa exist. A broad sample of taxa was examined from each of the bryocorine tribes. A broad range of outgroup taxa from most of the other mirid subfamilies was also examined to test for bryocorine monophyly, ingroup relationships and to determine character polarity. In total a matrix comprising 44 ingroup, 15 outgroup taxa and 111 morphological characters was constructed. The phylogenetic analysis resulted in a monophyletic subfamily Bryocorinae sensu Schuh (1976, 1995), except for the genus Palaucoris, which is nested within Cylapinae. The tribe Dicyphini sensu Schuh (1976, 1995) has been rejected. The subtribe Odoniellina is synonymized with the subtribe Monaloniina and the subtribes Dicyphina, Monaloniina and Eccritotarsina are now elevated to tribal level, with the Dicyphini now restricted in composition and definition. The genus Felisacus is highly autapomorphic and a new tribe – the Felisacini – is erected for the included taxa. This phylogeny of the tribes of the Bryocorinae comprises the following sister‐group relationships: Dicyphini ((Bryocorini + Eccritotarsini)(Felisicini + Monaloniini)).

Epidendrum L. is the largest genus of Orchidaceae in the Neotropical region; it has an impressive morphological diversification, which imposes difficulties in delimitation of both infrageneric and interspecific boundaries. In this study, we review infrageneric boundaries within the subgenus Amphiglottium and try to contribute to the understanding of morphological diversification and taxa delimitation within this group. We tested the monophyly of the subgenus Amphiglottium sect. Amphiglottium, expanding previous phylogenetic investigations and reevaluated previous infrageneric classifications proposed. Sequence data from the trnL-trnF region were analyzed with both parsimony and maximum likelihood criteria. AFLP markers were also obtained and analyzed with phylogenetic and principal coordinate analyses. Additionally, we obtained chromosome numbers for representative species within the group. The results strengthen the monophyly of the subgenus Amphiglottium but do not support the current classification system proposed by previous authors. Only section Tuberculata comprises a well-supported monophyletic group, with sections Carinata and Integra not supported. Instead of morphology, biogeographical and ecological patterns are reflected in the phylogenetic signal in this group. This study also confirms the large variability of chromosome numbers for the subgenus Amphiglottium (numbers ranging from 2n = 24 to 2n = 240), suggesting that polyploidy and hybridization are probably important mechanisms of speciation within the group.

Sequence data from the nuclear encoded ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region were used to determine monophyly of tribes, tribal limits, and tribal relationships of 96 so far unassigned or tentatively assigned genera (represented by 101 taxa/accessions) within the Brassicaceae. Maximum-parsimony and maximum-likelihood analyses of 185 ITS Brassicaceae sequences, which also included representatives of each of the 34 currently recognized tribes, supported the separate phylogenetic distinctness of these tribes and permitted the tribal assignment of all but 12 of the unassigned genera into tribal clades. The data support the recognition of eight new, well-resolved, uni- or oligogeneric tribes recognized herein as the Alyssopsideae [96% bootstrap support (BS); including the central and southwestern Asian Alyssopsis and Calymmatium], Asteae (100% BS; including the Mexican Asta), Eudemeae (97% BS; South American Brayopsis, Eudema, and Xerodraba), Kernereae (96% BS; European Kernera and Rhizobotrya), Notothlaspideae (100% BS; New Zealandic Notothlaspi), Oreophytoneae (100% BS; eastern African Oreophyton and southern European Murbeckiella), and Yinshanieae (100% BS; Chinese Yinshania), as well as the moderately supported Microlepidieae (75% BS; Australian Microlepidium and Carinavalva). Furthermore, the results fully support the recent findings that the tribes Schizopetaleae and Thelypodieae ought to be recognized as two distinct tribes instead of a single tribe, as well as provide some support for the re-establishment of the tribe Cremolobeae, bringing the total number to 44 tribes in the family. Nearly 92% (308) of the 336 genera in the family have been assigned to a tribe. The earlier-published Anastaticeae is taken here to replace the Malcolmieae.

Heldreichia Boiss. is a monospecific genus mainly distributed in Anatolia and the Lebanon. Although morphological variation and infrageneric phylogenetic relationships were recently studied in detail, Heldreichia remained as one of the few orphan genera that have not yet been assigned to any tribe. In the current study, we used sequence data from the nuclear ITS and chloroplast ndhF regions of Heldreichia and representatives of main Brassicaceae lineages and tribes to determine its tribal affiliation. Bayesian-based phylogenetic analyses clearly show with high support that Heldreichia is a member of the recently expanded tribe Biscutelleae. Furthermore, we characterize the tribe Biscutelleae morphologically and provide a determination key for all its genera.

The aim of this study was to assess the phylogenetic position of the South American cricetid genus Neotomys using two molecular markers: one nuclear (Irbp) and one mitochondrial (mt-cyb). This genus is currently considered as incertae sedis in the Sigmodontinae radiation. The phylogenetic relationships were estimated using three approaches: Bayesian inference, maximum likelihood and parsimony. We found the genus Neotomys closely related to the genera Euneomys and Irenomys, which are also considered incertae sedis. Our results suggest a common origin for this group of genera; this fact should be reflected in the taxonomy as a supra generic group with a tribal level. However, further and deeper analysis of both molecular and morphological data are needed to diagnose and formalize the proposed tribe. The relationships of this clade to the other members of Sigmodontinae were not clear as assessed by these data sets. The three genera are distributed around the Central and Southern Andes in South America evidencing that the Andes have played an important role in the diversification of several tribes of sigmodontine rodents.
