Probiotics, in particular Lactobacillus (lactic acid bacteria, LAB) strains, are widely used in clinical practice. Despite that these probiotics have GRAS (generally regarded as safe) and qualified presumption of safety (QPS) statuses, the safety of particular strains still needs to be thoroughly studied. The aim of the study was to evaluate the safety of Lact. casei IMV B-7280 strain by investigating toxicity and the effects on gut microbiota in experimental animal model. Male BALB/c mice (7–8 weeks, weight 20–24 g) were treated with amounts of Lact. casei IMV B-7280 strain: 5 × 106, 5 × 108, or 5 × 109 CFU/animal once per day during 7 days, or in the amount of 1 × 1010 CFU/animal once per day during 3 days (most of the proposed probiotic doses for humans—from 108 to 109 CFU) and monitored during 14 days. Blood tests and serum biochemistry were conducted; the cecal content from mice of the experimental and control groups were freshly collected and analyzed. At the end of the experiments (15th day), the presence of LAB in the heart, liver, kidney, and mesenteric lymph nodes and peripheral blood was determined; histology of the brain, liver, heart, fragments of the small and large intestine, and mesenteric lymph nodes was conducted. Survival rate of BALB/c mice treated with Lact. casei IMV B-7280 strain in different concentrations in toxicity experiments during 14 days was 100%. We observed no signs of toxicity as changes in gait, lethargy, sleep, somatomotor activity as well as changes in fur, eyes, skin and mucous membranes, tremors, behavior pattern, convulsions, salivation, diarrhea, and local injuries in mice from all experimental groups. After administration of probiotic strain, the number of opportunistic bacteria in cecal contents, such as Staphylococcus spp., Candida spp., Pseudomonas spp., and total aerobic and optionally anaerobic bacteria decreased compared to controls; the population of beneficial bacteria such as lactobacilli increased in cecal contents of these mice. LAB were not detected in the peripheral blood, heart, liver, kidneys, and mesenteric lymph nodes after administration of this strain to intact mice. Lact. casei IMV B-7280 strain is safe at dose up to 1010 CFU/animal during 3- and 7-day oral administration to mice and has a positive effect on the gut microbiota composition; it could be potentially considered as safe probiotic for humans.

Aims: Our study was conducted to evaluate the potent protective effects of oral administration of probiotic Lactobacillus strains against influenza virus (Flu) infection in a mouse model. Method and Results: Lyophilized Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) and Lactobacillus gasseri TMC0356 (TMC0356) were orally administered to BALB/c mice for 19 days. The test mice were intranasally infected with Flu A/PR/8/34 (H1N1) on day 14, and any changes in clinical symptoms were monitored. After 6 days of infection, the mice were killed and pulmonary virus titres were determined. The clinical symptom scores of mice administered oral LGG and TMC0356 were significantly ameliorated, compared to those of the control mice (P < 0·01). The pulmonary virus titres of the mice fed LGG and TMC0356 were also significantly decreased compared to those of control mice (P < 0·05). Conclusions: These results indicate that oral administration of lactobacilli, such as LGG and TMC0356, might protect a host animal against Flu infection. Significance and Impact of the Study: These results demonstrate that oral administration of selected lactobacilli might protect host animals from Flu infection by interactions with gut immunity.  相似文献

Thirteen strains of four different Bifidobacterium spp. were observed for their autoaggregation ability and surface hydrophobicity, and correlation between these two traits was determined. Bifidobacteria were classified into high, medium and low autoaggregation strains according to autoaggregation ratio measured from changes in absorbance of media. High autoaggregation strains showed microscopic clustering of cells, whereas low and medium autoaggregation strains showed no such clustering. Autoaggregation ability decreased in high autoaggregation strains but increased in medium and low autoaggregation strains when the assay was performed at higher temperature (37°C compared with 25 and 10°C). Bacterial strains belonging to the high, medium or low autoaggregation group were correlated in terms of their surface hydrophobicity and evaluated based on changes in absorbance of the bacterial suspension before and after extraction with xylene. These results indicate that autoaggregation ability, together with surface hydrophobicity and microscopic image could be used for evaluating the adhesion ability of potential probiotic bifidobacterial strains. Moreover, a synergistic effect of pH and media may be involved in autoaggregation.  相似文献

The present study describes the in vivo ameliorating effect of Lactobacillus casei supplementation in renourished Giardia intestinalis infected BALB/c mice. It was observed that daily administration of probiotic 7 days prior to Giardia-infection to renourished mice, efficiently reduced the excretion of Giardia cysts and trophozoite counts, along with significant increased fecal lactobacilli counts compared with Giardia-infected mice. It was also observed that oral feeding of probiotic to renourished-Giardia-infected mice abrogated all the anthropometric and biochemical anomalies. Histologically, morphological and cellular alteration of microvillus membrane integrity revealed that probiotic administration further ameliorated the mucosal damage in renourished-probiotic-Giardia-infected mice compared to severe microvillus atrophy, oedematous, vacuolated epithelial cells and ileitis in renourished-Giardia and Giardia-infected mice. Thus, it is suggested that probiotic used as the functional food helps in restoration of anthropometric, biochemical alterations and atrophied gut by enhancing the goblet cells and reducing the giardiasis.  相似文献

A strain of Lactobacillus plantarum SS2 isolated from a fermented star fruit (Averrhoa carambola) beverage product in Thailand has been reported to have some probiotic properties, in vitro. In the present study, its in vivo safety and gastrointestinal survival following oral administration to mice was investigated. The acute toxicity test on ICR mice by force-feeding of a single dose of 109 and 1012 cells per mouse over 14 days after ingestion showed no adverse effects related to the normal behavior of the laboratory mouse. Although the weight gains of the dosed mice were lower than the control they were still within normal values. There were no significant differences in liver weight ratio or spleen weight index among tested mice and control mice and no evidence of bacteremia. Live SS2 cells labeled with a fluorescent dye (cFDA-SE) and administered orally at 109 cells per mouse were shown to persist in the gastrointestinal tract for 7 days. Colonies similar to the SS2 were detected in fecal samples from the test mice even though the fecal lactic acid bacterial count showed no significant difference in any mice. The strain SS2 is therefore considered to be a possible alternative choice for an inoculum to produce fermented plant beverages.  相似文献

While many bacteria have been used as probiotics by industries, only two yeasts, Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. boulardii and Kluyveromyces fragilis (B0399), have been used for this purpose. In the present work, a total of 116 yeasts isolated from Brazilian indigenous fermented food, cocoa fermentation, and kefir were in vitro characterized for probiotic attributes. From 116 isolates, 36 were tolerant to gastrointestinal conditions evaluated by tolerance to pH 2.0, bile salts (0.3% w/v), and 37 °C temperature. From those, 15 isolates showed a similar or higher percentage (P < 0.05) of hydrophobicity, autoaggregation, and coaggregation with E. coli than the reference strain S. boulardii. All these strains showed a high percentage of adhesion to Caco-2 cells (> 63%) and antioxidant activity (ranging from 18 to 62%). Phytate hydrolysis was evaluated for these yeasts and 13 strains showed positive results, which is important for nutrient availability in plant-based foods. These results are important insights for characterization of novel probiotic yeast strains as well as to aggregate functional value to these food products.

The aim of this work is to characterize the potential probiotic properties of 14 antifungal Lactobacillus strains isolated from traditional fermenting Moroccan green olives. The molecular identification of strains indicated that they are composed of five Lactobacillus brevis, two Lactobacillus pentosus, and seven Lactobacillus plantarum. In combination with bile (0.3%), all the strains showed survival rates (SRs) of 83.19–56.51% at pH 3, while 10 strains showed SRs of 31.67–64.44% at pH 2.5. All the strains demonstrated high tolerance to phenol (0.6%) and produced exopolysaccharides. The autoaggregation, hydrophobicity, antioxidant activities, and surface tension value ranges of the strains were 10.29–41.34%, 15.07–34.67%, 43.11–52.99%, and 36.23–40.27 mN/m, respectively. Bacterial cultures exhibited high antifungal activity against Penicillium sp. The cell-free supernatant (CFS) of the cultures showed important inhibition zones against Candida pelliculosa (18.2–24.85 mm), as well as an antibacterial effect against some gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria (10.1–14.1 mm). The neutralized cell-free supernatant of the cultures displayed considerable inhibitory activity against C. pelliculosa (11.2–16.4 mm). None of the strains showed acquired or horizontally transferable antibiotic resistance or mucin degradation or DNase, hemolytic, or gelatinase activities. Lactobacillus brevis S82, Lactobacillus pentosus S75, and Lactobacillus plantarum S62 showed aminopeptidase, β-galactosidase, and β-glucosidase activities, while the other enzymes of API-ZYM were not detected. The results obtained revealed that the selected antifungal Lactobacillus strains are considered suitable candidates for use both as probiotic cultures for human consumption and for starters and as biopreservative cultures in agriculture, food, and pharmaceutical industries.

Adhesion ability of bifidobacteria to the intestinal mucosa is considered to be the prerequisite for colonization of bifidobacteria and can protect against gastrointestinal pathogens infection. The aim of this study was to investigate bifidobacterial surface traits related to adhesion ability in vitro and characterize the cell surface substances that may be involved in the adhesion process of bifidobacteria. Twelve strains of Bifidobacterium spp. were studied for the correlation among their adhesion ability, autoaggregation ability and surface hydrophobicity. The strain that exhibited good adhesion ability also showed high degree of hydrophobicity and strong autoaggregation ability. Pepsin treatment had negative effect on the surface traits and adhesion ability of B. bifidum KLDS2.0603 (P < 0.01), it revealed that hydrophobicity, autoaggregation and adhesion process maybe mediated by proteinaceous components on the surface of cell. Moreover, the adhesion and autoaggregation ability decreased after extraction of B. bifidum KLDS2.0603 with 5 mol l−1 LiCl, and an unreported 50-kDa surface protein which can bind to Caco-2 cell was observed by western blotting. Our results indicated that surface hydrophobicity and autoaggregation ability can be used together for preliminary screening the strains with high adhesion ability, and the present of the surface proteinaceous components would contribute to understand the interactions between bifidobacteria and human intestinal mucosa.  相似文献

AIMS: To investigate whether there is a relationship between interaction sites in the gut, hydrophobicity, mucosal immunomodulating capacities and cell wall protein profiles in lactobacilli, bifidobacteria and enterococci. METHODS AND RESULTS: Hydrophobicity, cell wall protein profiles and sites of interaction in the gut (by using fluorescein isothiocyanate-labelled bacteria) were determined for Lactobacillus casei, L. acidophilus, L. fermentum, Bifidobacterium bifidum, B. animalis and Enterococcus faecalis. We also determined the number of immunoglobulin (Ig)A+, tumour necrosis factor (TNF)alpha+, interleukin (IL)-6+ and IL-10+ cells after oral administration of the above bacteria to BALB/c mice. All strains assessed were found to interact with the sites of induction of the immune response in the gut. No correlation with hydrophobicity was observed. When some strains at certain doses were administered to mice, bacterial translocation to liver was observed. The oral administration of indigenous (104 cells day(-1)) and exogenous (107 cells day(-1)) bifidobacteria and lactobacilli for 5 consecutive days activated the systemic and intestinal mucosal immune response in a strain-specific way, independently whether the strain was indigenous or exogenous in relation to the host. The differences in the immunopotentiating capacity of the various strains might be related to the differences in their cell wall protein profiles. CONCLUSIONS: Indigenous bacteria activated the mucosal immune response at a dose significantly smaller than the one required for probiotic exogenous bacteria. However, probiotic exogenous bacteria can be used at high concentrations in fermented dairy products with a great impact on the immune system, favouring its immunomodulation. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The immunomodulation capacity of probiotic bacteria is strain specific and independent of the specificity of the host. The ability of certain strains to down-regulate the production and release of IL-6 by IL-10 may have potential implications in their use in cases in which cytokine deregulation or excessive production at the mucosal level can be the cause of tissue damage.  相似文献

Omega-3 and probiotics were shown to improve periodontal health by modulating the host immune response. Recently, the combination of omega-3 and probiotics has been shown to have a potential synergistic effect on host modulation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prophylactic role of an omega-3 and probiotic combination on alveolar bone loss (ABL) via inflammatory response in an experimental periodontitis model. Forty-three rats were divided into 5 groups as control (C, n?=?8), periodontitis (P, n?=?8), omega-3?+?periodontitis (O, n?=?8), probiotic?+?periodontitis (Pro, n?=?10), and omega-3?+?probiotic?+?periodontitis (OPro, n?=?9). Additionally to a standardized diet, omega-3 and/or probiotics were supplemented with oral gavage to the O, Pro, and OPro groups for 44 days. Periodontitis was induced by ligature to the P, O, Pro, and OPro groups on the 30th day for 2 weeks. ABL levels were measured histopathologically, and serum interleukin (IL) 1β, IL6, and IL10 levels were analysed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. ABL increased in all periodontitis groups (P, O, Pro, and OPro), compared to C group. Compared to P group, all oral gavage groups (O, Pro, and OPro) revealed decreased ABL, which was lowest in OPro group. IL1β and IL6 decreased and IL10 increased in OPro group, compared to P group. In conclusion, prophylactic administration of omega-3 and probiotic combination reduced ABL and improved serum IL1β, IL6, and IL10 levels more than their single use.

Purpose

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are traditionally employed in the food industry. LAB strains from goat milk may also present probiotic potential, and it is fundamental to study the safety and functionality aspects which are desirable for their use in food. The objective of this study was to verify the probiotic potential of lactic bacteria isolated from goat milk.

Methods

The presence of safety-related virulence factors (hemolytic activity, gelatinase production, coagulase, and sensitivity to antibiotics) as well as functionality (exopolysaccharide (EPS) production, proteolytic activity, autoaggregation, gas production, survival in the gastrointestinal tract, and antimicrobial activity against bacteria that impair oral health) were determined.

Result

The selected LAB strains are safe against the evaluated parameters and have characteristics of possible probiotic candidates. Especially L. plantarum (DF60Mi) and Lactococcus lactis (DF04Mi) have potential to be added to foods because they have better resistance to simulated gastrointestinal conditions. In addition, they are isolated with already proven antimicrobial activity against Listeria monocytogenes, an important food-borne pathogen. DF60Mi was able to produce EPS (exopolysaccharides). LS2 and DF4Mi strains, both Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis, demonstrated antimicrobial activity against S. mutans ATCC 25175, a recurrent microorganism in oral pathologies, mainly caries.

Conclusion

This study provides subsidies for future exploration of the potentialities of these LAB strains for both the development of new functional foods and for application in oral health.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of intragastrical administration of Glucerabacter canisensis NATH-2371T on glucosylceramide (GluCer) digestion in mice. Although G. canisensis was unable to utilize starch and cellulose, coculture of G. canisensis with mouse fecal bacteria greatly increased GluCer hydrolysis in polysaccharide medium, indicating that G. canisensis grew in competition with other intestinal bacteria. Although most of the administered G. canisensis cells were detected in feces, some cells were present in the colorectum contents, which had GluCer-hydrolyzing activity. These results indicate that G. canisensis can viably transit through the mouse gut. Administration of G. canisensis to mice fed diets supplemented with GluCer or GluCer-containing foods significantly enhanced GluCer hydrolysis. Since G. canisensis did not show acute toxicity, it may be useful as a probiotic to augment GluCer hydrolysis in the large intestine.

The present study was designed to envisage the antigiardial efficacy of killed probiotic and probiotic protein (PP) of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG in murine giardiasis. Experimentally, it was observed that animal administered either with probiotic protein emulsified with adjuvant (PP(E) + Giardia) or killed probiotic (killed probiotic (i/p) + Giardia) had significantly reduced Giardia cycle with respect to observed severity and duration of giardiasis compared with Giardia-infected mice. Further, it was found that animals belonging to PP(E) + Giardia and killed probiotic (i/p) + Giardia had significantly high levels of antigiardial IgA antibody and nitric oxide both in serum and in intestinal fluid compared with Giardia-infected and counter control mice. Histopathologyically, also animals belonging to PP(E) + Giardia and killed probiotic (i/p) + Giardia animals had intact mucosal epithelium lining, basal crypts, and normal villi along with increased goblet cells compared with severe microvillus atrophy, vacuolated epithelial cells, and ileitis in Giardia-infected mice. This is the first-ever study to demonstrate that prior administration of either killed probiotics or probiotic protein of effective probiotic reduced both the severity and the duration of giardiasis mainly by modulating the gut microbiome and morphology along with mucosal immunity, but animals belonging to PP(E) + Giardia had better response than killed probiotic (i/p) + Giardia suggesting that probiotic components do have adjuvant potential and may be used as the vaccine candidate for gastrointestinal diseases.

Prader–Willi syndrome (PWS) is a rare genetic disorder associated with developmental delay, obesity, and neuropsychiatric comorbidities. Limosilactobacillus reuteri (Lactobacillus reuteri, Lact. reuteri) has demonstrated anti-obesity and anti-inflammatory effects in previous studies. In the present study, we aim to evaluate the effects of Lact. reuteri supplementation on body mass index (BMI), social behaviors, and gut microbiota in individuals with PWS. We conducted a 12-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in 71 individuals with PWS aged 6 to 264 months (64.4 ± 51.0 months). Participants were randomly assigned to either receive daily Lact. reuteri LR-99 probiotic (6 × 1010 colony forming units) or a placebo sachet. Groupwise differences were assessed for BMI, ASQ-3, and GARS-3 at baseline, 6 weeks, and 12 weeks into treatment. Gut microbiome data was analyzed with the QIIME2 software package, and predictive functional profiling was conducted with PICRUSt-2. We found a significant reduction in BMI for the probiotic group at both 6 weeks and 12 weeks relative to the baseline (P < 0.05). Furthermore, we observed a significant improvement in social communication and interaction, fine motor function, and total ASQ-3 score in the probiotics group compared to the placebo group (P < 0.05). Altered gut microbiota was observed in the probiotic group to favor weight loss and improve gut health. The findings suggest a novel therapeutic potential for Lact. reuteri LR-99 probiotic to modulate BMI, social behaviors, and gut microbiota in Prader–Willi syndrome patients, although further investigation is warranted.

Wide variations among multifaceted-health benefitting attributes of probiotics fueled investigations on targeting efficacious probiotics. In the current study, lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolated from poultry gut, feces of rat, chicken, human infants, and fermented foods were characterized for desired probiotic functional properties including the phytase-producing ability which is one of the wanted characteristics for probiotics for potential applications for upgrading animal nutrition, enhancing feed conversion, and minimizing anti-nutritional properties. Among 62 LAB isolates Weissella kimchii R-3 an isolate from poultry gut exhibited substantial phytase-producing ability (1.77 U/ml) in addition to other functional probiotic characteristics viz. hydrophobicity, autoaggregation, coaggregation with bacterial pathogens, and antimicrobial activity against pathogens. Survival of W. kimchii R-3 cells (in free and calcium alginate encapsulated state) was examined sequentially in simulated gastric and intestinal juices. Encapsulated cells exhibited better survival under simulated gut conditions indicating that encapsulation conferred considerable protection against adverse gut conditions. Furthermore, simulated gastric and intestinal juices with pepsin and pancreatin showed higher survival of cells than the juices without pepsin and pancreatin. W. kimchii R-3 due to its significant functional probiotic attributes may have prospective for commercial applications in human/animal nutrition.  相似文献

Safety assessment of probiotic Lactobacillus fermentum MTCC-5898 (LF) with three doses (107, 109, and 1011 cfu/day/animal) was carried on Swiss albino mouse weanlings for 28 days using oral route. Health status of animals was monitored by physical assessment of body weight, organ indices, and histological appearances of liver and intestine along with measurement of hematological parameters (Hb, WBC, RBC count, MCHC, MCV, MCH), biochemical analytes in blood involving glucose, serum enzymes (ALT, AST and LDH), urea, creatinine, and lipid profile (total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, VLDL, LDL, and atherogenic index). LF showed no adverse effects on above parameters of general health status after continuous consumption for the experimental period. On the other hand, significant increase (p ≤ 0.05) in TGF-β (regulatory cytokine) and considerable decrease (p ≤ 0.05) in IFN-γ (pro-inflammatory cytokine) without any major changes in IL-4 and IL-12 in intestinal fluid on consumption of 109 cfu/animal/day confirmed its dose-specific response for immune homeostasis. Further, safety of LF was also confirmed by insignificant changes in release of FITC-dextran (4 kDa) in blood on its consumption than control group where only saline was given orally. Moreover, significantly (p ≤ 0.05) increased mRNA expression of claudin-1 and MUC-2 in intestinal epithelial cells on feeding L. fermentum further supported FITC-dextran permeability data which otherwise showed increased flux of FITC-dextran in blood on consumption of E. coli (109 cfu/animal/day) due to intestinal damage. Thus, in vivo results confirmed that Lactobacillus fermentum MTCC 5898 is safe and non-toxic to weanling mice and may be considered for functional food application after clinical testing.

There is a groundswell of interest in using genetically engineered sensor bacteria to study gut microbiota pathways, and diagnose or treat associated diseases. Here, we computationally identify the first biological thiosulfate sensor and an improved tetrathionate sensor, both two‐component systems from marine Shewanella species, and validate them in laboratory Escherichia coli. Then, we port these sensors into a gut‐adapted probiotic E. coli strain, and develop a method based upon oral gavage and flow cytometry of colon and fecal samples to demonstrate that colon inflammation (colitis) activates the thiosulfate sensor in mice harboring native gut microbiota. Our thiosulfate sensor may have applications in bacterial diagnostics or therapeutics. Finally, our approach can be replicated for a wide range of bacterial sensors and should thus enable a new class of minimally invasive studies of gut microbiota pathways.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the anti-obesity activity of a probiotic bifidobacterial strain in a mouse model with obesity induced by a high-fat diet. The mice were fed a high-fat diet supplemented with Bifidobacterium breve B-3 at 108 or 109 CFU/d for 8 weeks. B. breve B-3 supplementation dose-dependently suppressed the accumulation of body weight and epididymal fat, and improved the serum levels of total cholesterol, fasting glucose and insulin. The bifidobacterial counts in the caecal contents and feces were significantly increased with the B. breve B-3 administration. The expression of genes related to fat metabolism and insulin sensitivity in the gut and epididymal fat tissue was up-regulated by this administration. These results suggest that the use of B. breve B-3 would be effective in reducing the risk of obesity.  相似文献

Background

Bacteroides uniformis CECT 7771 is a potential probiotic strain, originally isolated from the stools of healthy breast-feed infants. The strain showed pre-clinical efficacy in a mouse obesity model. The objective of this study was to evaluate its potential toxicity and translocation ability after acute oral administration to mice.

Methods and Findings

A safety study was conducted in immunocompetent and immunosuppressed C57BL-6 mice. Both mouse groups (n = 10 per group) were fed orally 2 x 109 colony forming units (cfu)/day of B. uniformis CECT 7771 or placebo by gavage for 6 days. Throughout this time, feed and water intake and body weight were monitored. Afterwards, mice were sacrificed and biological samples were collected to analyze blood and urine biochemistry, inflammatory and immune markers; gut mucosal histology and bacterial translocation to peripheral tissues. The results demonstrated that acute ingestion of this Bacteroides strain had no adverse effects on the animals’ general health status or food intake, nor did it affect biochemical indicators of liver, kidney and pancreatic function or gut mucosal histology. Findings also demonstrated that administration did not lead to bacterial translocation to blood, liver or mesenteric lymph nodes. B. uniformis CECT 7771 also downregulated gene and protein expression (iNOS and PPAR-γ) and inflammatory cytokines induced by immunosuppression.

Conclusions

The findings indicate that the acute oral consumption of B. uniformis CECT 7771 does not raise safety concerns in mice. Further studies in humans should be conducted.  相似文献

Aims: The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of probiotics on gut‐derived sepsis caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa in immunocompromised mice. Methods and Results: After oral inoculation of P. aeruginosa, mice were treated with cyclophosphamide to induce leucopenia and translocation of the intestinal P. aeruginosa into blood, thereby producing gut‐derived sepsis. In this model, administration of 1 × 109 CFU of Bifidobacterium longum strain BB536 for 10 days significantly (P < 0·01) increased the survival rate compared with groups of mice administered either with Bifidobacterium breve strain ATCC 15700 or excipients contained in the probiotic bacterial powder. Administration of B. longum significantly decreased viable counts of P. aeruginosa in the liver and blood compared with other groups. Culture of intestinal contents revealed a significantly lower viable count of P. aeruginosa in the jejunum of B. longum‐treated mice compared with other groups of mice. Furthermore, in vitro data demonstrated that B. longum possessed apparently higher adherent activity to Caco‐2 cell monolayers and significantly suppressed the adherence of P. aeruginosa to the monolayers of cells compared with other groups. Conclusion: Oral administration of B. longum protects mice against gut‐derived sepsis caused by P. aeruginosa, and the effect may be due to interference of P. aeruginosa adherence to intestinal epithelial cells. Significance and Impact of this Study: This study demonstrated that oral administration of B. longum BB536 is effective to protect against opportunistic infection with drug‐resistant bacteria such as P. aeruginosa. The results suggest that probiotics may play an important role even in the immunocompromised patients.  相似文献
