Nase Chondrostoma nasus L., once one of the most common fish species in the upper reaches of central European rivers, is now considered endangered throughout its natural range. Since 2000 the Department of Ichthyobiology and Fisheries, Warsaw Agricultural University, has co‐operated with the Polish Anglers Association in Krosno to study the effects of river restocking with pond‐farmed nase juveniles. The experiment is carried out on Wislok River, where nase was very twenty years ago but has now completely disappeared. Selected parts of the river are stocked with tagged, one‐summer and 1 year‐old juveniles. Changes in nase occurrence, and their growth and foraging behaviour have been analysed.  相似文献

Eighteen adult nase Chondrostoma nasus (L.) (37.6–48.2 cm FL) from three highly fragmented Belgian rivers were tagged with surgically implanted radio transmitters and manually tracked from the banks of the rivers for 3–34 weeks. Their movements were mainly recorded during the circum reproduction period in 2001, 2002 and 2006 in river stretches delimited by physical barriers and/or minimum flow conditions. To reach the spawning grounds, nase displayed different patterns of movements that were mainly influenced by the configuration of the study site, the date of observation and the associated environmental conditions. Nase never cleared any physical obstacle but were able to spawn in minimum flow conditions or just downstream from physical obstacles. Nase were present on spawning grounds in late March in the warmest spring (2001) and from mid‐April to early May in the coldest spring (2006). After spawning, a major proportion of C. nasus migrated a substantial distance downstream, whereas others remained near their capture site and showed frequent movements, sometimes corresponding to group displacements from one river to another.  相似文献

This study aimed at examining resource partitioning both at the inter- and intraspecific levels between paired chondrostome fishes: Chondrostoma nasus, the nase, C. toxostoma, the sofie, and their hybrid. The study was performed in the south of France and concerned a main river (the Durance River) and a tributary (the Buech River). In these rivers, C. nasus was an introduced species, originating in central Europe, and C. toxostoma was an endemic congener, in the south of France. Stable isotope analysis was used to analyse trophic and spatial niches. Isotopic differences indicated that individuals from the three taxa (C. nasus, C. toxostoma and their hybrid) have different spatial origins. At the interspecific level, the different chondrostomes originating from the Buech River showed a high level of trophic niche overlap. At the intraspecific level, nase individuals originating from the different spatial origins showed a resource polymorphism; differences in morphology were associated with variation in behaviour and life history traits. Their coexistence was a likely outcome of resource polymorphism. This study provides an example of the importance of considering the link between intra- and interspecific interactions to gain an understanding of the mechanisms driving the coexistence of species-pairs.  相似文献

Research in evolutionary developmental (evo‐devo) biology is making an increasingly important contribution to our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying the establishment of complex morphological traits. Deciphering the ontogenetic trajectories leading to the differentiation of sister species (and the existence of hybrids) is a new challenge in our understanding of speciation processes. In the present study, we characterized the ontogenetic trajectory of lower lip morphology in two cyprinid species and their hybrids. Chondrostoma toxostoma has an arched lower lip and a generalist diet. Chondrostoma nasus has a straight lower lip and a specialist diet. An analysis of 99 C. toxostoma, 99 C. nasus and 25 first‐generation (F1) hybrid individuals demonstrated that the difference between arched and straight lip morphology was found to depend strongly on the height/width ratio of the lower lip. A comparison of the ontogenetic trajectories of these morphometric traits showed that the height of the lower lip was isometric to body length in both species, whereas developmental changes involving an acceleration and a hypermorphosis of the widening of the lower lip led to a straight lip morphology in C. nasus. F1 hybrids were characterized by an extreme phenotype resulting from a rate of lower lip widening slower than that in the two parent species. Therefore, we rejected a codominance hypothesis and concluded that the first stage of hybridization provides the foundations of evolutionary novelty. These results have important evolutionary implications because lower lip shape is linked to dietary behaviour in many fish species. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 106 , 342–355.  相似文献

The sampling skills of three common European fish species (Barbus barbus, Chondrostoma nasus and Squalius cephalus) were tested to assess their potential as biomonitors of past changes in river water quality through the analysis of diatoms in fish guts. The study was performed on three rivers with different chemical and physical conditions. Comparison of similarity indices revealed low diatom assemblage resemblance between epilithic samples and samples collected from fish guts at the same locality. In contrast, a mixed-effect linear model identified significant differences between locations through comparison of diatom-based water quality indices. Among fish species, diatom indices calculated from gut samples of B. barbus and C. nasus were in most cases not significantly different from those from epilithic samples while those from S. cephalus were often significantly different. The results of the study demonstrate that diatom analysis of fish guts provides a clear distinction between eutrophic and hypereutrophic rivers. Finer nutrient variations within hypereutrophic conditions were also found to be significant for some diatom indices. In this context, choice of appropriate diatom water quality index proved to be crucial in maximizing the sensitivity of the method.  相似文献

Aim Hidden diversity within an invasive ‘species’ can mask both invasion pathways and confound management goals. We assessed taxonomic status and population structure of the monkey goby Neogobius fluviatilis across Eurasia, comparing genetic variation across its native and invasive ranges. Location Native populations were analysed within the Black and Caspian Sea basins, including major river drainages (Dnieper, Dniester, Danube, Don and Volga rivers), along with introduced locations within the upper Danube and Vistula river systems. Methods DNA sequences and 10 nuclear microsatellite loci were analysed to test genetic diversity and divergence patterns of native and introduced populations; phylogenetic analysis of mtDNA cytochrome b and nuclear RAG‐1 sequences assessed taxonomic status of Black and Caspian Sea lineages. Multivariate analysis of morphology was used to corroborate phylogenetic patterns. Population genetic structure within each basin was evaluated with mtDNA and microsatellite data using FST analogues and Bayesian assignment tests. Results Phylogenetic analysis of mitochondrial and nuclear sequences discerned a pronounced genetic break between monkey gobies in the Black and Caspian Seas, indicating a long‐term species‐level separation dating to c. 3 million years. This pronounced separation further was confirmed from morphological and population genetic divergence. Bayesian inference showed congruent patterns of population structure within the Black Sea basin. Introduced populations in the Danube and Vistula River basins traced to north‐west Black Sea origins, a genetic expansion pattern matching that of other introduced Ponto‐Caspian gobiids. Main conclusions Both genetic and morphological data strongly supported two species of monkey gobies that were formerly identified as subspecies: N. fluviatilis in the Black Sea basin, Don and Volga Rivers, and the Kumo‐Manych Depression, and Neogobius pallasi in the Caspian Sea and Volga River delta. Genetic origins of introduced N. fluviatilis populations indicated a common invasion pathway shared with other introduced Ponto‐Caspian fishes and invertebrates.  相似文献

Between April and November 2003, parasitological examinations of the nase Chondrostoma nasus L. and the chub Leuciscus cephalus L. from the neighbouring Melk and Pielach rivers in Lower Austria were conducted. Amongst various gill parasites, Lamproglena pulchella Nordmann 1832 was detected on both fish species, which was the first record of this parasitic crustacean in Austria. Physico‐chemical examinations of water samples of the two rivers were carried out during the same period. The results indicate that general water parameters in the Melk were subjected to more vigorous changes than in the Pielach. Critical temperature levels and ammonia concentration as well as drastic changes in the ionic composition occurred more frequently in the Melk River. The observed distribution of L. pulchella indicates its sensitivity to such stress factors: there was no evidence of the parasite in the Melk River until late November and it only then occurred on the gills of L. cephalus with a prevalence of 20% and a mean intensity of 2. In the Pielach River, infestation on chub had already occurred in June with a prevalence of 40% and a mean intensity of 3, rising to 60% and 7 in November; 45% of the nase was also infested in November at a mean intensity of 3.  相似文献

An ecologically orientated flood protection project was implemented at the Austrian lowland Sulm River. Habitat modelling was conducted during a 3-year monitoring program to assess the effects of river bed embankment and the initiation of a new meander by constructing an initial side channel, and allowing self-developing side erosion. Hydrodynamic and physical habitat models were combined with statistical methods. This study focused on the necessity for including stability analysis when modelling spawning grounds. The critical erosion parameter of the cobbles at spawning grounds was analysed using numerical modelling combined with substrate maps of potential spawning grounds of nase (Chondrostoma nasus). Due to the specific characteristics of this reach of the Sulm River, instability of the riffles can hamper successful reproduction in nase. Spawning grounds of Chondrostoma nasus and their stability must be guaranteed at least for the duration of incubation. This morphodynamic necessity should be incorporated in future restoration projects and when artificially restoring spawning habitats. Handling editor: D. Ryder  相似文献

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has been widely used to describe interspecific differences in egg quality of teleost freshwater fish, but potential intraspecific differences are poorly studied. Eggs of many rheophilic cyprinids are covered with adhesive structures such as attaching villi facilitating egg attachment at substrates of spawning grounds with high currents. Recent findings indicate that the egg quality of the rheophilic cyprinid common nase (Chondrostoma nasus L.), a target species of conservation, differs in the adhesiveness between spawning populations, potentially explaining differences in recruitment success. In this study, a SEM image-based standardized protocol was established to assess egg surface quality of Chondrostoma nasus eggs. Multivariate statistics detected significant differences of egg surface properties among individual females and among three different populations. These differences were mainly attributed to length variability and merging of adhesive villi as well as to coating and filament-like connections of these structures. The findings of this study highlight the need for further investigations to better understand the relationship of egg surface properties, egg stickiness and hatching success to understand the recruitment ecology and performance of early life stages in freshwater fish.  相似文献

Natural and human‐mediated population structure of European grayling Thymallus thymallus was assessed in primarily Austrian reaches of the Danube River catchment. Data on phylogeographic structure based on mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) were combined with variation found across 13 microsatellite loci to assess introgression stemming from stocking activities. Populations north of the Alps generally showed no signs of long‐term introgression from allochthonous stocks, although one population comprised two distinct genotypic groups, one of which may stem from recently stocked material. South of the Alps, levels of introgression with stocks from the north were extensive and only one of six populations is believed to represent a reference state. Allelic diversity and expected heterozygosity were positively correlated with mtDNA admixture supporting more recent introgression and that there is little or no reproductive barrier between these two major lineages north and south of the Alps. A third unrelated mtDNA lineage is described from the Lafnitz, a tributary of the Raab drainage. The high lineage diversity in the upper Austrian Danube is not concordant with an existing model of T. thymallus evolutionarily significant units in Europe. Caveats in naming such units or following a strict hierarchical conservation unit structure for broadly distributed species with complex phylogeographic distributions stretching over various jurisdictions are discussed. The necessity of using both phylogeographic and population genetic approaches in evaluating the history and conservation value of populations in a conservation context is additionally highlighted.  相似文献

Freshwater fish evolved from anadromous ancestors can be found in almost all continents. The roles of paleogeographic events and nature selection in speciation process often are under focus of research. We studied genetic diversity of anadromous and resident tapertail anchovies (Coilia nasus species complex) in the Yangtze River Basin using 4,434 nuclear loci, and tested the history of freshwater invasion of C. nasus. We found that both C. brachygnathus and C. nasus were valid species, but the resident C. nasus taihuensis and the anadromous C. nasus were not different genetically based on Bayes factor species delimitation (BFD*). Maximum likelihood tree, Network, PCA and STRUCTURE analyses all corroborated the results of BFD*. Two independent freshwater invasion events of C. nasus were supported, with the first event occurring around 4.07 Ma and the second happened around 3.2 Ka. The time of the two freshwater invasions is consistent with different paleogeographic events. Estimation showed that gene flow was higher within ecotypes than between different ecotypes. F‐DIST analyses identified 120 disruptive outliers by comparing C. brachygnathus to anadromous C. nasus, and 21 disruptive outliers by comparing resident C. nasus to anadromous C. nasus. Nine outliers were found to be common between the two comparisons, indicating that independent freshwater invasion of C. nasus might involve similar molecular pathways. The results of this study suggest that adaptation to landlocked freshwater environment of migratory fish can evolve multiple times independently, and morphology of landlocked ecotypes may cause confusion in their taxonomy.  相似文献

Chondrostoma nasus is a cyprinid fish with highly specialized, ecologically and geographically distinct, ontogenetic trophic niches. Nase population numbers across their Swiss range have shown massive declines and many localized extinctions. In this study, we integrate genetic data (AFLP, microsatellite, mtDNA sequence) with phenotypic and demographic analyses to survey patterns of neutral and adaptive genetic diversity in all extant (and one extinct) Swiss nase populations, with the aim to delineate intraspecific conservation units (CUs) and to inform future population management strategies. We discovered two major genetically and geographically distinct population groupings. The first population grouping comprises nase inhabiting rivers flowing into Lake Constance; the second comprises nase populations from Rhine drainages below Lake Constance. Within these clusters there is generally limited genetic differentiation among populations. Genomic outlier scans based on 256 to 377 polymorphic AFLP loci revealed little evidence of local adaptation both within and among population clusters, with the exception of one candidate locus identified in scans involving the low genetic diversity Schanzengraben population. However, significant phenotypic differentiation in body shape between certain populations suggests a need for more intensive future studies of local adaptation. Our data strongly suggests that the two major population groups should be treated as distinct CUs, with any supplemental stocking and reintroductions sourced only from within the range of the CU concerned.  相似文献

Gudgeons of the genus Gobio are small Eurasian fishes whose systematics, taxonomy, and phylogenetic relationships have been the matter of a long-standing debate. Two species, Gobio gobio and G. obtusirostris have been reported for Austria, with a potential hybrid zone in the upper Danube. Phylogenetic and phylogeographic analysis of mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I and control region sequences, as well as nuclear ribosomal protein S7 sequences, however, shows that the proposed hybrid zone is not restricted to the upper Danube, but spans large parts of the Austrian Danube system (upper Danube, Rába & Mur systems). Moreover, our data show that also a third lineage, closely related to species from the southern Balkan, contributed to the gene pool of Austrian Gobio. Patterns of intra-lineage genetic diversity indicate that the distinct Gobio lineages expanded their distribution recently (most likely post-glacially) to come into secondary contact and hybridize in the Danube system.  相似文献

A total of 298 fish specimens belonging to seven families were caught during ichthyoplanktonic survey of three rivers within the Ewekoro cement facility catchment area located in southwestern Nigeria. The highest numbers of specimens were caught from Alaguntan (37.0%) and Elebute (36.6%) rivers while 28.9% of the fish samples were collected from Itori River. The fish population and species diversity recorded in the catchment rivers were significantly lower (p < 0.05) than comparative catches from Ewekoro River located about 30 km downstream of the factory operational area. The food items ingested by the specimens across the seasons in the catchment rivers revealed obvious differences in diet with some degree of overlap in the fish trophic preferences. However, the omnivorous species dominated the catches in each of the rivers, irrespective of season. Categorization of the fish specimens based on habitat-related adaptive physiology showed that a significant number of the fish from Alaguntan and Itori Rivers have accessory respiratory organs. The four species with accessory respiratory organs were Polypterus senegalus Curv., Clarias gariepinus C. & V., Ctenopoma kingslayae Gun. and Channa obscura Smith. Of the 12 fish species recorded in the Ewekoro cement facility catchment rivers, only P. senegalus, C. gariepinus, C. obscura and Oreochromis niloticus (Trew.) are valuable food fishes in southwestern Nigeria.  相似文献

The genotoxic and histopathological effects of water pollution were investigated on two fish species caught from the Buyuk Menderes River and from its tributary, the Cine Stream. The Buyuk Menderes basin is an important agricultural area in Turkey. The levels of copper, zinc, cadmium, cobalt, and lead were measured at the surface of the water and in gills, liver, and muscle tissue of Chondrostoma nasus and Barbus capito pectoralis. In some tissues, the concentrations of some of these metals exceeded acceptable levels for human consumption. Zinc was found to be the most abundant metal in water and tissues. Maximal metal accumulation was observed in the liver. To detect the genotoxic potential of contaminants, the formation of micronucleus in erythrocytes was used as indicator of chromosomal damage. The frequency of micronucleus formation did not show significant differences between locations and controls in B. capito pectoralis caught from three locations and C. nasus from two locations. The histological changes included significant decreases of the mean lengths of primary and secondary lamellae. In gills epithelia, we observed cellular proliferation that developed Because of secondary lamellae fusion, ballooning degenerations, or club deformation of secondary lamellae and cystic structures in secondary lamellae. In the liver, the changes included swollen and ruptured parenchymal cells, loss of cord structure, vacuoles filled with cellular debris, focal necrosis, and a significant increase in Kupffer cells.  相似文献

Nase Chondrostoma nasus L. is one of the most threatened reophilic fish species in Poland. At present it has almost disappeared from the northern and central parts of its range while in the south its abundance has decreased. Protection of the species through closed seasons, catch and size limits has not been sufficient, and active enhancement through stocking is now applied. Developing the technology of hormonally induced spawning and adapting carp pond culture techniques for the rearing of nase enabled substantial enhancement efforts. According to Polish Anglers Association, stocking has increased from 50 000 of hatchlings in 1994 to 840 000 of hatchlings, 568 000 summer and 900 000 autumn juveniles, and 1720 two year‐old fish in 2002. At present the problems to be solved urgently are preserving the genetic diversity of cultured and wild populations, and evaluating stocking effectiveness.  相似文献

The Chondrostoma genus is widespread in Europe, with numerous endemic species in northern Mediterranean rivers. We reconstructed the phylogenetic relationships of this genus, using the whole cytochrome b sequence and compared the two freshwater fish dispersion hypotheses: (1) dispersion around the Mediterranean Sea during the Lago Mare phase of the Messinian salinity crisis (Bianco's hypothesis) and (2) an older and more gradual colonization of the Mediterranean rivers (Banarescu's hypothesis). All phylogenetic analyses identified two levels of divergences, implying two radiation events in the Chondrostoma genus. The first radiation mainly concerned Mediterranean species, whereas the second one includes Danubian and Mesopotamian species. This phylogeographic pattern was already observed for the genus Squalius, which exhibits a similar geographic range distribution in Europe and probably is shared with several other Mediterranean genera, such as Scardinius, Rutilus, and TELESTES: Furthermore, assuming a molecular clock of 1% per million years, the first radiation appears consistent with a Messinian dispersion during the Lago Mare, 5.3 million years ago, whereas the second one may correspond to a Mesopotamian dispersion through the Black Sea to the Danube system. According to our results, the Lago Mare theory is strengthened, and a more recent and pre-Pleistocene colonization of the Danube from Mesopotamian freshwater fishes is suggested.  相似文献

  • Genetic differences among freshwater fish populations are dependent on life‐history characteristics of the species, including the range of adult dispersal and the extent of homing to natal breeding grounds. However, the effects of variation in such characteristics on population genetic connectivity are rarely studied comparatively among closely related species.
  • We studied population genetic structure within three congeneric cyprinid species from the Lake Malawi catchment that differ substantially in life‐history traits and conservation status, using a combination of microsatellite and mitochondrial DNA markers. Mpasa (Opsaridium microlepis) is a large (70 cm total length) migratory species that spawns in rivers, but as an adult is exclusively known from the main lake body. Sanjika (Opsaridium microcephalum), is a medium size (30 cm total length) species that exists in lake breeding, river‐lake migratory and apparently landlocked populations. Dwarf sanjika (Opsaridium tweddleorum) is a small non‐migratory species (15 cm total length) that persists in small tributaries surrounding the main lake and adjoining rivers.
  • The results revealed striking differences among the three species in spatial genetic structuring. The river‐lake migratory mpasa showed only weak yet significant population genetic structure within the main Lake Malawi catchment, suggesting that there is no strong natal homing. The habitat‐generalist sanjika showed only weak spatial genetic differentiation at microsatellite loci within the Lake Malawi catchment, but moderate structure in mitochondrial DNA, potentially reflecting male‐biased dispersal. The river‐restricted dwarf sanjika showed strong genetic structure in both microsatellite and mitochondrial DNA, suggesting strictly limited dispersal at both adult and juvenile stages.
  • We conclude that contrasting migration life histories have resulted in dramatically different patterns of population genetic structure among these congeneric species. The observed patterns demonstrate how divergent life‐history evolution may strongly influence broader patterns of population genetic connectivity in freshwater fish, with consequences for management and conservation. Specifically the results suggesting gene flow among Lake Malawi populations of mpasa, an IUCN red‐listed ‘Endangered’ species endemic to the lake catchment, imply that conservation initiatives operating at both local and catchment scales are needed to reverse local population decline.

  • 1.1. The digestibility of laminarine in vitro differed significantly in a cyprinid and a cichlid fish under the same experimental conditions; in Chondrostoma nasus it never exceeded 30%, but amounted to up to 86% in Oreochromis sp.
  • 2.2. It is assumed that different sets of laminarine-digesting enzymes are involved.
  • 3.3. Both species posess an exo-laminarinase (α-d-1,3-glucane glucohydrolase), hydrolysing terminal glucose monomers until a β-d-1,6-linked branching site is reached in the laminarine molecule.
  • 4.4. For the hydrolysis of the branching site the required β-1,6-glucohydrolase is lacking in Chondrostoma nasus. lio]5. A β-1,6-glucohydrolase in the intestine of Oreochromis sp. allows complete digestion of laminarine.
