Biogeochemical cycles are inherently linked through the stoichiometric demands of the organisms that cycle the elements. Landscape disturbance can alter element availability and thus the rates of biogeochemical cycling. Nitrification is a fundamental biogeochemical process positively related to plant productivity and nitrogen loss from soils to aquatic systems, and the rate of nitrification is sensitive to both carbon and nitrogen availability. Yet how these controls influence nitrification rates at the landscape scale is not fully elucidated. We, therefore, sampled ten watersheds with different disturbance histories in the southern Appalachian Mountains to examine effects on potential net nitrification rates. Using linear mixed model selection (AIC), we narrowed a broad suite of putative explanatory variables into a set of models that best explained landscape patterns in potential net nitrification. Forest disturbance history determined whether nitrification and nitrogen mineralization were correlated, with the effect apparently mediated by microbially available carbon. Undisturbed forests had higher available carbon, which uncoupled potential net nitrification from potential net nitrogen mineralization. In contrast, disturbed watersheds had lower available carbon, and nitrification rates were strongly correlated to those of nitrogen mineralization. These data suggest that a history of disturbance at the landscape scale reduces soil carbon availability, which increases ammonium availability to nitrifiers at the micro-scale. Landscape-level soil carbon availability then appears to determine the coupling of autotrophic (nitrification) and heterotrophic (nitrogen mineralization) biogeochemical processes, and hence the relationship between carbon and nitrogen cycling in soils.  相似文献

Ammonia‐oxidizing bacteria (AOB) perform the rate‐limiting step of nitrification, a key ecosystem process that in part determines the fate of nitrogen in ecosystems. However, little is known about the factors that determine soil AOB diversity or composition, especially in tropical systems. Using a set of study systems in Costa Rica, we examined whether plant diversity or land‐use influenced AOB diversity or composition and whether AOB diversity or composition were associated with nitrification rates. We characterized the molecular diversity and composition of AOB via polymerase chain reaction amplification, cloning, and sequencing of 16S rDNA. We found that AOB diversity or composition did not change significantly across plant diversity treatments. In contrast, AOB differed among land‐use types in some measures of diversity and in composition, and differences in AOB composition among land‐use types were correlated with potential rates of nitrification. Our results suggest that anthropogenic changes of ecosystems can alter microbial communities in ways that may affect the processes they mediate.  相似文献

Constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment   总被引:10,自引:3,他引:7
The first experiments using wetland macrophytes for wastewater treatment were carried by out by Käthe Seidel in Germany in early 1950s. The horizontal sub-surface flow constructed wetlands (HF CWs) were initiated by Seidel in the early 1960s and improved by Reinhold Kickuth under the name Root Zone Method in late 1960s and early 1970s and spread throughout Europe in 1980s and 1990s. However, cohesive soils proposed by Kickuth got clogged very quickly because of low hydraulic permeability and were replaced by more porous media such as gravel in late 1980s in the United Kingdom and this design feature is still used. In fact, the use of porous media with high hydraulic conductivity was originally proposed by Seidel. HF CWs provide high removal of organics and suspended solids but removal of nutrients is low. Removal of nitrogen is limited by anoxic/anaerobic conditions in filtration beds which do not allow for ammonia nitrification. Phosphorus removal is restricted by the use of filter materials (pea gravel, crushed rock) with low sorption capacity. Various types of constructed wetlands may be combined in order to achieve higher treatment effect, especially for nitrogen. However, hybrid systems are comprised most frequently of vertical flow (VF) and HF systems arranged in a staged manner. HF systems cannot provide nitrification because of their limited oxygen transfer capacity. VF systems, on the other hand, do provide a good conditions for nitrification but no denitrification occurs in these systems. In hybrid systems (also sometimes called combined systems) the advantages of the HF and VF systems can be combined to complement processes in each system to produce an effluent low in BOD, which is fully nitrified and partly denitrified and hence has a much lower total-N outflow concentrations.  相似文献

A method for measuring rates of nitrification in intact marine sediment cores has been modified and adapted for use in freshwater sediments. The technique involves subsampling a sediment core into minicores. Half of these cores are treated with an inhibitor of chemolithotrophic nitrification and, after incubation, differences in ammonia and nitrate concentration between inhibited and uninhibited systems are calculated. The within-treatment variability of ammonia and nitrate concentrations could be reduced by storing the cores overnight prior to subsampling. Estimates of the nitrification rate using the difference in ammonia concentrations between the inhibited and uninhibited mini-cores were always greater than the rate estimate using the difference in nitrate concentrations. Comparison between the results using the nitrification inhibitors allylthiourea (ATU) and nitrapyrin (N-Serve) indicated that the former appeared to give larger values for the nitrification rate than did the latter. Differences in the efficiency of these inhibitors in the control of nitrification under the conditions used partly explain these results. Data are also presented on the effect of N-Serve and ATU on some other nitrogen transformations affecting ammonia and nitrate concentrations.  相似文献

Nitrogen in wastewater degrades aquifer and surface water quality. To protect water quality in the United States, nitrogen discharge standards are strict: typically 1.0 mg/L NH4-N for discharge to surface water and 10 mg/L total nitrogen (TN) for discharge to soil. Passive constructed wetland treatment systems cannot meet the nitrification standards discussed in this paper, using loading rates commonly considered to be cost-effective based on economic conditions in North America. Although partial nitrification can be achieved with some vertically or intermittently loaded, subsurface flow (SSF) wetlands, complete nitrification cannot be achieved in these passive wetland treatment systems. Engineered wetlands (EWs) use mechanical power inputs via pumping of air or water to nitrify wastewater, and have evolved in large part to nitrify wastewater. The design energy requirements for these power inputs have yet to be described in the wetland treatment literature. Our paper investigates the energy and area requirements of three wetland technologies: aerated subsurface flow, tidal flow, and pulse-fed wetland treatment, compared to a mechanical activated-sludge treatment system.  相似文献

Here I describe how losses of fixed nitrogen can occur in riparian zones by the activity of denitrifying bacteria associated with methane-oxidizing (methanotrophic) bacteria. Several methanotrophs catalyze nitrogen cycle processes that can occur in riparian buffer zones, including nitrification and nitrogen fixation. Methanotrophs can produce nitric and nitrous oxides during oxidation of ammonium (nitrification), but they cannot carry out denitrification. However, there is good evidence that denitrifying bacteria can be associated with methanotrophs and can use simple carbon compounds released by the methanotrophs as substrates for the denitrification reactions and for growth. Evidence is presented that denitrifiers isolated from methanotrophic gel-stabilized oxygen gradient systems can use methanol, formaldehyde, and formate, all methane oxidation intermediates, to support their denitrification. Such denitrification associated with methanotrophs can release dinitrogen and so contributes to losses of fixed nitrogen, and may also produce the important atmospheric trace gases nitric and nitrous oxides. Data presented also show that some methanotrophs produce nitrogen oxides, including nitrite, nitric oxide, and nitrous oxide, during growth on nitrate. Assimilatory reduction of nitrate appears to be a requirement for the release of these products.  相似文献

Tropical scleractinian corals support a diverse assemblage of microbial symbionts. This ‘microbiome’ possesses the requisite functional diversity to conduct a range of nitrogen (N) transformations including denitrification, nitrification, nitrogen fixation and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA). Very little direct evidence has been presented to date verifying that these processes are active within tropical corals. Here we use a combination of stable isotope techniques, nutrient uptake calculations and captured metagenomics to quantify rates of nitrogen cycling processes in a selection of tropical scleractinian corals. Denitrification activity was detected in all species, albeit with very low rates, signifying limited importance in holobiont N removal. Relatively greater nitrogen fixation activity confirms that corals are net N importers to reef systems. Low net nitrification activity suggests limited N regeneration capacity; however substantial gross nitrification activity may be concealed through nitrate consumption. Based on nrfA gene abundance and measured inorganic N fluxes, we calculated significant DNRA activity in the studied corals, which has important implications for coral reef N cycling and warrants more targeted investigation. Through the quantification and characterisation of all relevant N-cycling processes, this study provides clarity on the subject of tropical coral-associated biogeochemical N-cycling.Subject terms: Stable isotope analysis, Biogeochemistry, Biogeochemistry, Biogeochemistry, Microbial ecology  相似文献

Nitrification, a microbial process, is a key component and integral part of the nitrogen (N) cycle. Soil N is in a constant state of flux, moving and changing chemical forms. During nitrification, a relatively immobile N-form (NH 4 +) is converted into highly mobile nitrate-N (NO 3 ?). The nitrate formed is susceptible to losses via leaching and conversion to gaseous forms via denitrification. Often less than 30% of the applied N fertilizer is recovered in intensive agricultural systems, largely due to losses associated with and following nitrification. Nitrogen-use efficiency (NUE) is defined as the biomass produced per unit of assimilated N and is a conservative function in most biological systems. A better alternative is to define NUE as the dry matter produced per unit N applied and strive for improvements in agronomic yields through N recovery. Suppressing nitrification along with its associated N losses is potentially a key part in any strategy to improve N recovery and agronomic NUE. In many mature N-limited ecosystems, nitrification is reduced to a relatively minor flux. In such systems there is a high degree of internal N cycling with minimal loss of N. In contrast, in most high-production agricultural systems nitrification is a major process in N cycling with the resulting N losses and inefficiencies. This review presents the current state of knowledge on nitrification and associated N losses, and discusses strategies for controlling nitrification in agricultural systems. Limitations of the currently available nitrification inhibitors are highlighted. The concept of biological nitrification inhibition (BNI) is proposed for controlling nitrification in agricultural systems utilizing traits found in natural ecosystems. It is emphasized that suppression of nitrification in agricultural systems is a critical step required for improving agronomic NUE and maintaining environmental quality.  相似文献

The stoichiometric equations of ammonification, nitrification and denitrification have demonstrated that the nitrogen cycle in nature is rather complicated. The mechanisms of biological nitrogen transformations are very important for analysis, design, operation and optimal control of natural ecosystems or engineered systems for nitrogen removal, and accurate stoichiometric equations can help in the maintenance of these environments. In this study, the new stoichiometric equations of intermediate nitrification, and heterotrophic and autotrophic denitrification with sulfur as the electron donor have been developed and discussed. The parameter values of f(s) (the fraction of electron donor coupled to cell synthesis) in stoichiometric equations of nitrification and denitrification are calculated according to experimental results implied in previously reported stoichiometric equations. Some new stoichiometric relationships of nitrification and denitrification, such as the O(2) demand for nitrifications, chemical oxygen demand/N ratios and the yield coefficients for denitrifications have been established. The pathway steps of nitrification and denitrification have been discussed.  相似文献

New analytical methods such as advanced molecular techniques and microsensors have resulted in new insights about how nitrogen transformations in stratified microbial systems such as sediments and biofilms are regulated at a μm–mm scale. A large and ever-expanding knowledge base about nitrogen fixation, nitrification, denitrification, and dissimilatory reduction of nitrate to ammonium, and about the microorganisms performing the processes, has been produced by use of these techniques. During the last decade the discovery of anammmox bacteria and migrating, nitrate accumulating bacteria performing dissimilatory reduction of nitrate to ammonium have given new dimensions to the understanding of nitrogen cycling in nature, and the occurrence of these organisms and processes in stratified microbial communities will be described in detail.  相似文献

Nitrogen inputs into stream and river ecosystems, and the factors influencing those inputs, are important for various ecological and environmental concerns. Reliable information on where and how nitrogen compounds flow into aquatic ecosystems is indispensable to understanding the nutrient status of these ecosystems. Such information should include the biogeochemical mechanisms and hydrological controls of nutrient leaching into rivers from terrestrial systems such as forests, agricultural fields, and urbanized areas. Advancements in stable isotopomer measurements over the past two decades have expanded the variety of target substances and the precision with which they can be investigated. The high-throughput microbial denitrifier method allows for simultaneous measurement of nitrogen and oxygen isotope ratios and can provide high-resolution spatiotemporal information on both nitrate sources and biogeochemical processes. Although advanced techniques of stable isotope analysis have been used extensively to detect sources and estimate the relative contributions of multi-source systems in various rivers, there are still new horizons in investigating nitrogen transformations. For example, stable isotopes of oxygen (18O and 17O) occurring in nitrate due to atmospheric deposition can be used as natural tracers for evaluating internal nitrogen cycling; these isotopes are distinct from the oxygen within microbially generated nitrate in soils and water bodies. Another future challenge is improved use of nitrous oxide isotopomers in evaluating the relative contributions of nitrification and denitrification. Such analysis could provide insight into the nitrogen transformation that occurs under redox conditions at the boundary between terrestrial and aquatic systems, where nitrification and denitrification often occur simultaneously in soil and aquatic environments.  相似文献

Soil nitrogen (N) mineralization is an important component of the N cycling process in ecosystems. In this study, we assessed the seasonal patterns of net soil N mineralization and nitrification using an intact soil core incubation method in the upper 0–10 cm soil layer in three representative land use types. These included a fenced steppe, an abandoned field and a crop field in a grassland landscape of Inner Mongolia, China. The study was conducted from September 2004 to August 2005. Our results demonstrate marked seasonal variations in inorganic N pools, net nitrogen mineralization and net nitrification. Net N mineralization was higher in the crop field than in the fenced steppe and the abandoned field. Daily rates of N mineralization and nitrification during the growing season were approximately twice their corresponding mean annual rates. Accumulative mineralization and nitrification of N during the growing season accounted for about 90 and 85% of that measured for the entire year. Rates of mineralization and nitrification were positively correlated with soil bulk density, but negatively correlated with soil pH. Net N mineralization and nitrification were strongly regulated by land use, precipitation, soil water and temperature.  相似文献

Global patterns and controlling factors of soil nitrification rate   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Soil nitrification, an important pathway of nitrogen transformation in ecosystems, produces soil nitrate that influences net primary productivity, while the by‐product of nitrification, nitrous oxide, is a significant greenhouse gas. Although there have been many studies addressing the microbiology, physiology, and impacting environment factors of soil nitrification at local scales, there are very few studies on soil nitrification rate over large scales. We conducted a global synthesis on the patterns and controlling factors of soil nitrification rate normalized at 25°C by compiling 3,140 observations from 186 published articles across terrestrial ecosystems. Soil nitrification rate tended to decrease with increasing latitude, especially in the Northern Hemisphere, and varied largely with ecosystem types. The soil nitrification rate significantly increased with mean annual temperature (MAT), soil nitrogen content, microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen, soil ammonium, and soil pH, but decreased with soil carbon:nitrogen and carbon:nitrogen of microbial biomass. The total soil nitrogen content contributed the most to the variations of global soil nitrification rate (total coefficient = 0.29) in structural equation models. The microbial biomass nitrogen (MBN; total coefficient = 0.19) was nearly of equivalent importance relative to MAT (total coefficient = 0.25) and soil pH (total coefficient = 0.24) in determining soil nitrification rate, while soil nitrogen and pH influenced soil nitrification via changing soil MBN. Moreover, the emission of soil nitrous oxide was positively related to soil nitrification rate at a global scale. This synthesis will advance our current understanding on the mechanisms underlying large‐scale variations of soil nitrification and benefit the biogeochemical models in simulating global nitrogen cycling.  相似文献

Summary A review is made of the recent work to assess the prospects of regulating urea hydrolysis and nitrification processes in soils by employing chemicals that can retard urea hydrolysis and nitrification. The possible benefits from control of nitrogen transformations in terms of conserving and enhancing fertilizer nitrogen efficiency for crop production and the problems associated with their use with regard to N metabolism of plants have also been discussed with examples. Prospects of using cheap and effective indigenous materials and chemicals for control of urea hydrolysis and nitrification under specific soil situations appear eminent in improving the fertilizer nitrogen efficiency. Urease inhibitors may be helpful in reducing problems associated with ammonia volatilization if this is not offset by leaching of urea. On the other hand retardation of nitrification appears useful in reducing losses that accompany nitrification due to leaching and denitrification, and with the plants that metabolize equally well with relatively higher amounts of NH4–N may be more effective in improving the utilization of fertilizer N under these situations.  相似文献

To ensure a sustainable food supply for the growing population, the challenge is to find agricultural systems that can meet production requirements within environmental constraints and demands. This study compares the impacts of winter wheat production on energy use, land use and 100 years Global Warming Potential (GWP100) under different arable farming systems and farming practices. Life cycle assessment was used to simulate the impacts of organic, conventional and integrated farming (IF) systems along the production chain from input production up to the farm gate. The IF system models were designed to combine the best practices from organic and conventional systems to reduce negative environmental impacts without significant yield reductions. An integrated system that used food waste digestate as a fertiliser, and utilised pesticides and no‐tillage had the lowest energy use and GWP per functional unit of 1000 kg wheat output. When the impacts of some specific practices for reducing energy use and GWP were compared, the highest energy use reductions were achieved by replacing synthetic nitrogen fertilisers with anaerobically treated food waste or nitrogen fixing crops, increasing yields through crop breeding and using no‐tillage instead of ploughing. The highest GWP reductions were achieved by using nitrification inhibitors, replacing synthetic nitrogen fertilisers and increasing yields. The major contributors to the uncertainty range of energy use were associated with machinery fuel use and the assumed crop yields. For GWP results, the main source of uncertainty related to the N2O emissions. In conclusion, farming systems that combine the best practices from organic and conventional systems have potential to reduce negative environmental impacts while maintaining yield levels.  相似文献
