The exoskeleton in the Middle Cambrian Burgess Shale arthropod Tegopelte has previously been described as divided into tergites. Evidence from its sister taxon Saperion and from a Naraoia specimen from the Lower Cambrian Chengjiang fauna enables a reinterpretation of the suggested tergite boundaries in Tegopelte as preservational artefacts. They are considered here as folds that were formed during flattening of the undivided dorsal shield. As in the Naraoia specimen, the folds were initiated in the axial region between appendage pairs and then continue laterally. In Tegopelte and Saperion , segmentally arranged furrows in the axial region facilitated fold formation. Characters other than presence of thoracic tergites and pygidium must be used to assess the affinities of Tegopelte, Arthropoda, Tegopeltidae, tagmosis, segmentation, Chengjiang fauna, Burgess Shale.  相似文献

Two new species of the families Polyxenidae and Synxenidae, are described from Table Mountain National Park, South Africa. Propolyxenus squamatussp. n. (Polyxenidae) has tergites I-X mostly covered by scale-shaped trichomes directed caudally, a character previously known only in Synxenidae. The structure of scale-shaped dorsal trichomes is different to that of the scales in Phryssonotus and Condexenus species. Phryssonotus brevicapensissp. n. (Synxenidae) is the only known species of the genus Phryssonotus having 11 tergites, (including collum and telson) and 15 pairs of legs, as in Condexenus biramipalpus Nguyen Duy-Jacquemin, 2006. These two species therefore appear to occupy an intermediate position between Phryssonotus (12 tergites) and Polyxenoidea (maximum of 11 tergites).  相似文献

Microscopic examination of adults of the apple blossom weevil, Anthonomas pomorum L. reveals distinct differences between sexes in the last two (seventh and eighth) abdominal tergites. The last two abdominal tergites in males are clearly divided by a suture, whereas the division is not visible in females, in which these two tergites form a single triangular plate. In addition, the last (eighth) abdominal tergite of the male is covered with dense setae, and is about one-third of the size of the last abdominal plate of the females. These differences permit sex differentiation of adult apple blossom weevils with complete accuracy.  相似文献

Bleomycin (BLM) is well known as an antibiotic as well as for its antineoplastic activity. A clinical preparation of BLM was tested for its recombinogenicity in a higher eukaryotic organism, Drosophila melanogaster. Feeding of the F1 larvae on a medium with BLM increased somatic crossing-over spots on female tergites and induced recombination in male germ cells. However, nonlinear dose-response curves were obtained. Malformed tergites were also observed in females treated with BLM.  相似文献

Locust-style and pseudo-orthogonal structures were found in the cuticle of Heteropteryx dilatata, with the tibiae and femora containing both, and the ocular facets showing only helicoidal construction. The same epidermal cells appear to be competent to secrete both locust-style and pseudo-orthogonal cuticle structure. Curved fibres were found to exist and an apparent 'diagonal lattice' construction of the fibres in the thoracic and abdominal tergites and sternites at about 45 degrees to the insect's long axis. The advantages of flight have apparently been sacrificed for increased 'armour-plating' and the wings exhibit the characteristics of flightlessness. The minimum age post final moult of the insect as calculated from the growth layers was 7 weeks, the actual age being unknown. 'Trauma lines' and 'continuous lamellation' were seen and several possible explanations discussed.  相似文献

In Drosophila melanogaster, abdominal tergite pigmentation and the appearance of a trident‐shaped thoracic pattern exhibit similar biogeographical variation and sensitivity to temperature. These pigmentation traits may be under common selection pressure in natural populations or may be genetically correlated. To investigate the nature of this interaction, replicated populations of D. melanogaster were selected for increased or decreased melanization of the abdominal tergites for 40 generations. Selection for abdominal tergite pigmentation leads to correlated changes in trident formation. Sound production in New Zealand giant wetas (Orthoptera: Anostostomatidae) includes a femoro-abdominal mechanism, a ticking sound when alarmed (mechanism unknown) and, in two species (Deinacrida rugosa and Deinacrida parva), a tergo-tergal mechanism on the dorsal overlapping surfaces of abdominal tergites. The tergo-tergal mechanism consists of bilaterally paired patches of short curved spines on the dorsal anterior margins of tergites II–V, rubbed by opposing patches of articulated hair sensilla on the underside of each overlapping tergite. The latter are extremely robust, modified mechanoreceptors inserted at an acute angle onto raised bases which greatly restrict movement. They rub sideways against the underlying spines and produce sound during telescopic abdominal contraction which accompanies defence leg kicking stridulation. Movement analysis showed that the abdominal tergites contract asynchronously during stridulation. Sound is produced during both phases of telescoping. Femoro-abdominal sound comprises loud clicks of broadband sound principally below 10 kHz; tergo-tergal sound is a softer hiss spreading broadly from 10 kHz to the ultrasonic above 20 kHz. We propose that the tergo-tergal mechanism may have evolved under predation pressure by the ground gleaning short tailed bat endemic to New Zealand. The use of mechanosensory hair sensilla for sound production is rare in arthropods.  相似文献

Colour in the Ephippiger ephippiger complex varies with the geographical distribution and with rearing density. In the W European subspecies E. e. vitium , wild insects from northern and eastern parts of the range tend to have green tergites with relatively inconspicuous banding, whereas those from S France have conspicuously pale banded dark-green or brown tergites. These forms represent the ends of a continuum and there is no zone of distinction. However, the E Pyrenean subspecies, E. e. cunii , lacks the broad banding of its neighbouring E. e. vitium. The tergites of laboratory cultured insects of these stocks when reared in isolation are distinctly green but when reared together become progressively brown. The darkness of the brown is density dependant, so that at high densities the tergites may become almost black. These colour changes are irreversible. Adult insects also become darker with sexual maturity and after contact on mating. Wild-caught E. e. ephippiger from Italy and Yugoslavia have green tergites without obvious banding. Colour changes have not been found or induced in this subspecies. The significance of the colour change is considered and although firm data are wanting, circumstantial evidence suggests a deliberate shift to an aposematic or pseudoaposematic colour pattern.  相似文献

Constraining the origin of animal groups is allowed, to some extent, by discoveries of Cambrian Lagerstätten that preserve both mineralizing and nonmineralizing organisms. A new species is reported here of the Cambrian arthropod Skania, which bears an exoskeleton that shares homologies with the Neoproterozoic (Ediacaran) organism Parvancorina and firmly establishes a Precambrian root for arthropods. A new monophyletic group, Parvancorinomorpha, is proposed as the first clade within the arthropod crown group demonstrably ranging across the Neoproterozoic–Paleozoic transition. The Parvancorinomorpha is interpreted to be the sister group of the Arachnomorpha. Incipient cephalization in Skania and related genera represents a step in the progression toward division of a cephalon from a large posterior trunk as shown in Cambrian arachnomorphs such as naraoiids and the addition of a pygidium and thoracic tergites as shown in the arachnomorph clade basal to trilobites. This evidence can serve as a new calibration point for estimating the divergence time for the last common ancestor of arthropods and priapulids based on molecular clock methods.  相似文献

The bushcricket Pantecphylus cerambycinus has two types of stridulatory mechanisms and acoustical signals. The elytro-elytral mechanism typical for tettigonioid bushcrickets is used to produce a narrow-band calling song (peak frequency 15 kHz). An abdomino-alary mechanism is used for disturbance stridulation. Its stridulatory file is situated on the hind edge of the abdominal tergites and consists of 50-70 parallel ridges, covering the whole width of the tergite. The broad-band sound (peak frequency 10 kHz) is produced by the contact between the file and ribs situated on the upper side of the hindwings which are folded in such a way that their upper side is directed toward the tergites. Defensive stridulation in bushcrickets is reviewed here, and its function and evolution discussed in the context of predator avoidance strategies. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Abstract. Coganomyia ornata gen. et sp.n. is described from Angola, and a possible second species from Uganda is reported. The sensory pits of the nymphs of the planthopper Issus coleoptratus were investigated using light and electron microscopic techniques. Sensory pits consist of a bowl-shaped depression in the cuticle (25–70 μm in diameter) covered by a transparent cupola of presumably waxy material. Each pit is equipped with a long sensory hair that emerges from the inner wall of the pit and extends horizontally for about two thirds of the pit diameter. The cupola emerges from the rim of the pit opposite to the socket of this hair. Additional small sensory hairs extend into the base of the cupola. While the ultrastructure of these small hairs resembles that of other mechanoreceptive sensory hairs of insects, that of the long hairs shows several peculiarities. Sensory pits are dispersed over the frontal part of the head, the tergites of thoracic and abdominal segments. On the different parts of the exoskeleton, the orientation of long hairs within the pits varies in a systematic fashion with respect to the body axes. Size, location, and orientation of the pits show almost perfect bilateral symmetry. Their number increases with each moult. Comparative data show that the level of structural complexity of these sense organs varies considerably within this group of insects.  相似文献

Five morphometrical traits (wing and thorax length, ovariole number, and thoracic and female abdomen pigmentation) were investigated in laboratory stocks of 20 species belonging to the Drosophila obscura group (subgenus Sophophora). These species originated from four biogeographical regions and represent all five of the presently recognized, taxonomic subgroups. Size‐related traits (wing and thorax length) were highly variable across species, and interspecific variation explained more than 90% of total variability. In both traditional and phylogenetic analyses, wing size was positively correlated with latitude of origin. These interspecific correlations were however notably weaker than those for intraspecific correlations. Wing/thorax ratio, which may be related to flight capacity, showed little variation. Ovariole number was highly variable (range 27–53) both within and between species, and was positively correlated with the wing/thorax ratio, suggesting that species with relatively large ovaries have relatively low wing loading. Although many species are completely dark, 11 had some regions of light coloration. A light thorax with a median darkening was observed in six species. A variable pigmentation of abdominal tergites, in females only, was found in nine species, belonging to three subgroups only. With respect to both molecular phylogeny and morphometrical evolution, the D. obscura subgroup is probably now the best investigated clade in Drosophila.  相似文献

Entomological surveys in the state of Maranh?o have recorded morphologically distinct populations of Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva). Some populations have one pair of spots (1S) on the fourth tergite, while others have two pairs (2S) on the third and fourth tergites of males. In the present study we investigated the degree of genetic polymorphism among four populations in the municipalities of Caxias, Codó and Raposa, in the state of Maranh?o, Brazil, by using RAPD (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA) markers. A total of 35 loci were identified, of which 30 were polymorphic. The highest polymorphism was observed with primer OPA 4, which produced 11 different profiles. Genetic diversity was assessed using grouping methods that produced a dendrogram in which the genotypes could be clearly separated into two main clades according to the number of spots on the male abdominal tergites. One cluster contained the populations from Caxias and Codó, and the other was formed by the populations from Raposa and Codó. The results of our RAPD analysis showed a clear separation between the populations with one and two pairs of spots. The epidemiologic significance of this genetic differentiation should be investigated in future studies.  相似文献

Alicodoxa rasnitsynigen. et sp. n. (Dictyopharinae: Orthopagini) is described based on a nymph from Rovno amber; it also occurs in Baltic amber. A small additional wax plate dorsal to the large wax plate of abdominal tergites VI-VIII is first reported in this and other genera of Dictyopharidae. Phylogenetic analysis of Myxophaga (Coleoptera) using larval characters   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
A phylogenetic parsimony analysis of fifty-four larval characters of Myxophaga (excluding Lepiceridae) resulted in two minimal length cladograms. The monophyly of Torridincolidae, Hydroscaphidae and Microsporidae is supported by several autapomorphies: miniaturization, flattened body with laterally extended tergites, broadened head, scale-like surface structures, broad tentorial bridge, disc-shaped labral sensilla, spiracular gills and pupation in the last larval exuviae. Hydroscaphidae are the sister group of Microsporidae. Larvae of both families are characterized by semi-entognathous mouthparts, tergites with posterior rows of lancet-shaped setae, claws with flattened basal spines and balloon-shaped spiracular gills. The monophyly of all families is supported by autapomorphies. Torridincolidae excluding Delevea is defined as a monophylum by four derived character states: body ovoid, thorax semicircular and as long as abdomen, labral sensilla fused and abdominal sternite IX distinctly reduced and triangular. The monophyly of Torridincolinae (sensu Endrödy-Younga 1997b) is supported by two autapomorphies. The proposed branching pattern suggests that the early representatives of Myxophaga (excluding Lepiceridae) were living in aquatic conditions with a preference for hygropetric habitats. The tendency to live on rocks in running water and miniaturization have played an important role in myxophagan evolution.  相似文献

Larval water mites parasitise a wide range of aquatic insects and may have a negative impact on host fitness. One host taxon susceptible to water mite parasitism is the whirligig beetle (Coleoptera: Gyrinidae). We made 11 collections of the whirligig beetle Dineutus nigrior Roberts from May to October of 2006 to investigate patterns of water mite parasitism on that host species. Mites were identified as of the genus Eylais. Mite intensity ranged from 1 to 11. Median intensity was 1.0 and ranged from 1.0 to 3.0 for individual samples. There did not appear to be temporal patterns in mite intensity. Prevalence was 30.9% but varied substantially over the sampling period ranging from 2.5 to 63.3%. Mites were attached to the metathoracic wings and the body tergites under the elytra. When all samples were considered there was equal use of wings and body tergites but there was temporal variation in the use of attachment sites.  相似文献

The fine structure of male sex pheromone disseminating structures on abdominal segments of five species of Lutzomyia sandflies (Diptera: Psychodidae) was analyzed. Scanning electron microscopy showed that in Lutzomyia cruzi [Mem. Inst. Oswaldo Cruz 33 (1938) 349] and Lutzomyia longipalpis [Mem. Inst. Oswaldo Cruz 4 (1912) 84], the disseminating structures are located in pale spots on abdominal tergites IV or III and IV and are morphologically similar, appearing as small round cuticular elevations with a central pore. Observation of abdominal tergites of L. longipalpis pupae showed that the spots, but not the structures, are already present in this stage. In Lutzomyia lenti [Mem. Inst. Oswaldo Cruz 33 (1938) 349] and Lutzomyia carmelinoi [Mem. Inst. Oswaldo Cruz 81 (1986) 323] adult males, the disseminating structures are present on tergal segments V and VI, where pale spots could not be observed, and appear as apple-like elevations with a central pore. In Lutzomyia renei, a single disseminating structure is found at the anterior region of tergal segment VI. Transmission electron microscopy was used to analyze the gland cell fine structure in L. cruzi. Several class III gland cells are located side by side in the fourth abdominal segment. Each epidermal secretory cell contains a small reservoir and a short outlet channel through the cuticle.  相似文献
