While obesity is associated with liver cancer in studies from western societies, the paucity of data from Asia limits insights into its aetiological role in this population. We examined the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and liver cancer mortality using data from the Asia Pacific Cohort Studies Collaboration. In 309,203 Asian study members, 4 years of follow-up gave rise to 11,135 deaths from all causes, 420 of which were ascribed to liver cancer. BMI, whether categorised according to current guidelines for Asian groups or World Health Organisation recommendations, was not associated with liver cancer in any of our analyses. 相似文献

The biogeography of Southeast Asia and the West Pacific is complicated by the fact that these are regions on the border of two palaeocontinents that have been separated for a considerable period of time. Thus, apart from any patterns of vicariance, two general patterns relating to dispersal can be expected: a pattern of Southeast Asian elements, perhaps of Laurasian origin, expanding into Australian areas, and a reverse pattern for Australian elements, perhaps of Gondwanan origin. On top of this, both Australian and Southeast Asian elements occur in the Pacific. They dispersed there as the Pacific plate moved westward, bringing the different islands within reach of Southeast Asia and Australia. In order to reconstruct the biotic history of these areas, two large data sets consisting of both plants and animals were generated, one for each pattern, which were analysed using cladistic methods. The general patterns that emerged were weakly supported and do not allow general conclusions. 相似文献

The emergence of H1N1 in 2009 shows that it is a mistake to regard the scenario of having to implement pandemic plans as merely hypothetical. This recent experience provides an opportunity to inquire into the current state of pandemic preparedness plans with regard to their ethical adequacy. One aspect that deserves consideration in this context is the disclosure of ethical reasoning. Accordingly, the following is an analysis of examples of pandemic plans and drafts of plans from Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific. It is an analysis of the occurrence of explicit ethical reflection in these documents as well an inquiry into the related question of how ethical reflection can be understood as a constitutive element of ethical pandemic preparedness. In the analysis, different fields of ethical consideration concerning equity, personal rights and accountability are distinguished. There are both pragmatic and genuinely ethical reasons to explicitly address issues of these types in pandemic plans. The extent to which ethical language appears in the national plans in South East Asia and the Western Pacific suggests that there is limited awareness of ethical considerations, or at least insufficient ethical substantiation of pandemic action. The aim of the analysis is to show that further inclusion of ethical considerations into pandemic plans is ethically demanded. It is of particular significance that these considerations are formulated and remain discernible as instances of ethical deliberation. 相似文献

Viruses are major factors of human infectious diseases. Understanding of the structure-function correlation in viruses is important for the identification of potential anti-viral inhibitors and vaccine targets. In virology research, virus-related databases and bioinformatic analysis tools are essential for discerning relationships within complex datasets about viruses and host-virus interactions. Bioinformatic analyses on viruses include the identification of open reading frames, gene prediction, homology searching, sequence alignment, and motif and epitope recognition. The predictions of features such as transmembrane domains, glycosylation sites, and protein secondary and tertiary structure are important for analyzing the structure-function relationship of proteins encoded in viral genomes. Biochemical pathway analysis can help elucidate information at the biological systems level. Microarray analysis provides methods for high throughput screening and gene expression profiling. Virus-related bioinformatics databases include those concerned with viral sequences, taxonomy, homologous protein families, structures, or dedicated to specific viruses such as influenza and herpes simplex virus (HSV). This review provides a guide and overview of computational programs for these analyses as a resource for genomics and proteomics studies in virology research. These resources are useful for understanding viral diseases, as well as for the design and development of anti-viral agents. 相似文献
