Predators and prey often engage in a game where predators attemptto be in areas with higher prey densities and prey attempt tobe in areas with lower predator densities. A few models havepredicted the resulting distributions of predators and prey,but little empirical data exist to test these predictions andto examine how abiotic and biotic factors shape the distributions.Thus, we observed how Anax dragonfly nymphs and Pacific treefrog tadpoles (Pseudacris regilla) either together or separatelydistributed themselves in an arena with a high- and a low-preyresource patch. Trials were conducted in high- and low-lightconditions to manipulate predation risk and to view the effectsof this abiotic factor. Counter to the model predictions, wefound that predators were not more abundant in high-resource(HR) patches, and they thus did not force prey toward beinguniformly distributed. Using a model selection approach to assesswhat factors affected predator and prey patch-switching movement,we found that prey more often left patches that had more predatorspresent, but predators surprisingly more often left patcheswith more prey present. Light levels did not affect predationrisk; however, in the dark with the associated reduction invisual information predators preferred HR patches. This causeda lower coincidence of prey and predators in patches. Predatorsalso switched patches less often when they occupied the samepatch as the other predator. This suggests that predator distributions,and indirectly prey distributions, are affected by the riskof intraguild predation.  相似文献

A soluble protein was isolated from Mougeotia by chloropromazine-sepharose 4 B affinity chromatography. The protein matches the properties of calmodulin in terms of heat stability, Ca2+-dependent electrophoretic mobility in sodium-dodecyl-sulfate polyacrylamide gels, and its ability to activate cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase in a Ca2+-dependent manner. Phytochrome-mediated chloroplast reorientational movement in Mougeotia was inhibited by the calmodulin antagonist trifluoperazine, a hydrophobic compound, or N-(6-aminohexyl)-5-chloro-1-naphthalenesulfonamide (W-7), a hydrophilic compound; 50% inhibition (IC50) of chloroplast movement is caused by 20–50 mol l-1 trifluoperazine or 100 mol l-1 W-7. Auxin application to the upper side of the pulvinus of primary leaves of Phaseolus vulgaris L. promoted bending away from the place of application. The effect had a latency of less than 20 min and was specifically induced by substances known as active auxins in growth tests (indoleacetic and 1-naphthaleneacetic acid) but not by inactive auxin analogs (2-naphthaleneacetic, 3-indolepropionic and benzoic acid); 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, and L-(-)-2,4-dichlorophenoxyisopropionic acid were of intermediate activity. The profile-to-face chloroplast movement in the green alga Mougeotia has been induced by strong blue and near-ultraviolet light pulses (6 J m-2). Simultaneously, strong red or far-red light (10 W m-2) was applied perpendicularly to the inducing beam. The response was measured photometrically. Against the far-red background the reciprocity law was found to hold for pulse durations varying two orders of magnitude. The action spectrum exhibited a maximum near 450 nm and a distinct increase in near-ultraviolet. The time-course and the spectral dependence of pulse responses of chloroplasts in Mougeotia were similar to those recorded for other plants which are sensitive only to blue. In recent years, population viability analysis has become a popular tool to assess the relative risk of extinction among populations. Viability estimates for spatially structured populations require movement data that are often unavailable. In this paper, a diffusion approximation model was used to explore the effects of different spatial scenarios resulting from assumptions about movement rates. Census data for 13 breeding islands occupied by California sea lions Zalophus californianus californianus in the Gulf of California were used to explore three potential scenarios: unlimited movement between sites (panmictic population), limited movement (several clusters of populations) and no movement between islands (isolated islands). Predicted viability estimates were different for each scenario, but contrary to expectations, the mean extinction risk estimates were generally lowest when movement was unlimited (panmictic scenario). However, despite an extensive dataset, the confidence of the viability predictions for each scenario was low. In some cases, uncertainty in predictions within a scenario was greater than differences between scenarios. Therefore, it is recommended that in situations where movement rates and spatial structure are unknown, extinction risk estimates should reflect both the confidence intervals for each risk estimate and the uncertainty resulting from different spatial scenarios. This study also provides the first estimate of population viability (considering spatial structure) for California sea lions in the Gulf of California and an evaluation of population status based on the IUCN criteria for species listing.  相似文献

The capitula ofTaraxacum officinale andT. japonicum open in response to temperature rise at lower temperatures (thermonasty), and in response to light at higher temperatures (photonasty), as was the case inT. albidum. The capitula ofT. officinale could respond to the same temperature rise more sensitively than those ofT. albidum orT. japonicum. The minimum temperature for photonastic opening is as low as 13 C forT. officinale, while that forT. albidum andT. japonicum is about 18 C. That is why the capitula ofT. officinale opened earlier than those ofT. albidum andT. japonicum in the morning in April under natural conditions. The capitulum continued to be open for about 13–14 hr inT. officinale and about 8–11 hr inT. japonicum and inT. albidum both under natural conditions in April and even under constant light-temperature conditions, suggesting that the time of capitula-closing in these three species is not controlled by changes in environmental factors (light and/or temperature).  相似文献

An action spectrum for the low-fluencerate response of chloroplast movement in protonemata of the fern Adiantum capillus-veneris L. was determined using polarized light vibrating perpendicularly to the protonema axis. The spectrum had several peaks in the blue region around 450 nm and one in the red region at 680 nm, the blue peaks being higher than the red one. The red-light action was suppressed by nonpolarized far-red light given simultaneously or alternately, whereas the bluelight action was not. Chloroplast movement was also induced by a local irradiation with a narrow beam of monochromatic light. A beam of blue light at low energy fluence rates (7.3·10-3-1.0 W m-2) caused movement of the chloroplasts to the beam area (positive response), while one at high fluence rates (10 W m-2 and higher) caused movement to outside of the beam area (negative response). A red beam caused a positive response at fluence rates up to 100 W m-2, but a negative response at very high fluence rates (230 and 470 W m-2). When a far-red beam was combined with total background irradiation with red light at fluence rates causing a low-fluence-rate response in whole cells, chloroplasts moved out of the beam area. When blue light was used as background irradiation, however, a narrow far-red beam had no effect on chloroplast distribution. These results indicate that the light-oriented movement of Adiantum chloroplasts is caused by red and blue light, mediated by phytochrome and another, unidentified photoreceptor(s), respectively. Summary Amoeba proteus obliged to follow dark stripes in the form of Y may be studied in three repeatable simple configurations: 1. tail + 1 advancing front, 2. tail + 2 advancing pseudopodia, 3. tail +1 advancing pseudopodium + 1 contracting pseudopodium. Formation of two advancing pseudopodia and the later conversion of one of them into a contracting pseudopodium affect the rate of movement of all the other body parts in the manner predictible by the hydrodynamic concept of the endoplasmic flow in amoeba. An active front stops and begins to retreat when arriving to a constant distance from the posterior body end. The workshop ‘Spatial models in animal ecology, management and conservation’ held at Silwood Park (UK), 9–11 March 2010, aimed to synthesize recent progress in modelling the spatial dynamics of individuals, populations and species ranges and to provide directions for research. It brought together marine and terrestrial researchers working on spatial models at different levels of organization, using empirical as well as theory-driven approaches. Different approaches, temporal and spatial scales, and practical constraints predominate at different levels of organization and in different environments. However, there are theoretical concepts and specific methods that can fruitfully be transferred across levels and systems, including: habitat suitability characterization, movement rules, and ways of estimating uncertainty.  相似文献

1. In this review, we first summarize how hydrologic connectivity has been studied for riverine fish capable of moving long distances, and then identify research opportunities that have clear conservation significance. Migratory species, such as anadromous salmonids, are good model organisms for understanding ecological connectivity in rivers because the spatial scale over which movements occur among freshwater habitats is large enough to be easily observed with available techniques; they are often economically or culturally valuable with habitats that can be easily fragmented by human activities; and they integrate landscape conditions from multiple surrounding catchment(s) with in‐river conditions. Studies have focussed on three themes: (i) relatively stable connections (connections controlled by processes that act over broad spatio‐temporal scales >1000 km2 and >100 years); (ii) dynamic connections (connections controlled by processes acting over fine to moderate spatio‐temporal scales ~1–1000 km2 and <1–100 years); and (iii) anthropogenic influences on hydrologic connectivity, including actions that disrupt or enhance natural connections experienced by fish. 2. We outline eight challenges to understanding the role of connectivity in riverine fish ecology, organized under three foci: (i) addressing the constraints of river structure; (ii) embracing temporal complexity in hydrologic connectivity; and (iii) managing connectivity for riverine fishes. Challenges include the spatial structure of stream networks, the force and direction of flow, scale‐dependence of connectivity, shifting boundaries, complexity of behaviour and life histories and quantifying anthropogenic influence on connectivity and aligning management goals. As we discuss each challenge, we summarize relevant approaches in the literature and provide additional suggestions for improving research and management of connectivity for riverine fishes. 3. Specifically, we suggest that rapid advances are possible in the following arenas: (i) incorporating network structure and river discharge into analyses; (ii) increasing explicit consideration of temporal complexity and fish behaviour in the scope of analyses; and (iii) parsing degrees of human and natural influences on connectivity and defining acceptable alterations. Multiscale analyses are most likely to identify dominant patterns of connections and disconnections, and the appropriate scale at which to focus conservation activities.  相似文献

Abstract: During 2 years of radiotelemetry research on chukars (Alectoris chukar) in western Utah, USA, we found 28% of retrieved radios (n = 78) in rubbish nests of woodrats (Neotoma spp.). Such movement and disturbance of carcasses and radios by woodrats and other species has implications for radiotelemetry studies. We evaluated spatio-temporal movement of 51 radiocollars attached to chukar carcasses in western Utah. Most (80%) carcasses were scavenged within one week and by the end of 3 weeks 25 (50%) had been retrieved from woodrat middens. Scavenging activity can both obscure important clues needed to identify causes of mortality and bias telemetry studies by delaying onset of mortality signals.  相似文献

Dispersal is an important life-history trait, but it is notoriously difficult to study. The most powerful approach is to attack the problem with multiple independent sources of data. We integrated information from a 14-year demographic study with molecular data from five polymorphic microsatellite loci to test the prediction of male-biased dispersal in a common elapid species from eastern Australia, the small-eyed snake Rhinoplocephalus nigrescens. These snakes have a polygynous mating system in which males fight for access to females. Our demographic data demonstrate that males move farther than females (about twice as far on average, and about three times for maximum distances). This sex bias in adult dispersal was evident also in the genetic data, which showed a strong and significant genetic signature of male-biased dispersal. Together, the genetic and demographic data suggest that gene flow is largely mediated by males in this species.  相似文献

为探究麻栎种群不同发育阶段的空间分布特征及关联性,以黄土高原南部桥山林区麻栎天然次生林为研究对象,用L(r)函数对麻栎种群不同发育阶段空间分布特征及关联性进行分析。结果表明:(1)样地内麻栎种群各发育阶段数量结构均为不规则倒"J"型,种群结构稳定,能实现持续更新。(2)麻栎种群总体的空间分布特征受生境异质性影响较大,纯林样地中,种群在0—10 m尺度上表现为高强度聚集分布,5—35 m尺度表现为低强度聚集;混交林样地中,0—5 m尺度上表现为高强度聚集分布,5—35 m尺度上则表现为低强度聚集分布。(3)随着种群的发育及尺度的增大,麻栎种群空间聚集强度减弱,纯林样地内,麻栎幼苗在0—6 m的小尺度表现为聚集分布,6—12 m尺度上表现为随机分布;幼树在各尺度上均表现为聚集分布;中龄树与成龄树在各尺度上均表现为随机分布。混交林样地中,仅幼苗在0—6 m尺度上表现为聚集分布,其余各阶段在各尺度下均趋于随机分布。(4)种群不同发育阶段不同尺度空间关联性不同,纯林样地中,幼苗与幼树在1—2 m小尺度上呈负相关,幼树与中龄树在8 m尺度呈正相关,其余各生长阶段之间在任意尺度上均无关联性;混交林样地中,幼树与中龄树在2—12 m尺度上表现为正相关,其余各生长阶段之间在各尺度上均无关联。在未来的森林经营中,应对不同发育阶段、不同生境的种群进行不同抚育措施,促进种群良性发育。  相似文献

A fundamental goal in animal ecology is to quantify how environmental (and other) factors influence individual movement, as this is key to understanding responsiveness of populations to future change. However, quantitative interpretation of individual-based telemetry data is hampered by the complexity of, and error within, these multi-dimensional data. Here, we present an integrative hierarchical Bayesian state-space modelling approach where, for the first time, the mechanistic process model for the movement state of animals directly incorporates both environmental and other behavioural information, and observation and process model parameters are estimated within a single model. When applied to a migratory marine predator, the southern elephant seal (Mirounga leonina), we find the switch from directed to resident movement state was associated with colder water temperatures, relatively short dive bottom time and rapid descent rates. The approach presented here can have widespread utility for quantifying movement–behaviour (diving or other)–environment relationships across species and systems.  相似文献

植物种群的空间分布格局及其关联性不仅反映种群的生态调控能力和环境可塑性机制,也是其在群落中地位与生存能力的外在表现。在宁夏盐池县,选择以蒙古冰草为优势种的荒漠草原为对象,按丛径将蒙古冰草个体划分Ⅰ级株丛(0—5 cm)、Ⅱ级株丛(5.1—10 cm)、Ⅲ级株丛(10.1—15 cm)、Ⅳ级株丛(15.1—20 cm)和Ⅴ级株丛(﹥20 cm)5个株丛级,采用点格局分析中的O-ring函数统计方法,分析了蒙古冰草种群的株丛结构、各级株丛的空间分布格局及关联性。结果表明:(1)蒙古冰草种群中Ⅰ、Ⅱ级株丛占比(79.24%)明显高于Ⅳ、Ⅴ级株丛占比(8.46%),种群中可供更新的幼苗充足,种群表现出良好的发展趋势。(2)在小尺度范围内,蒙古冰草Ⅰ、Ⅱ、Ⅲ级株丛主要表现为聚集分布,而且个体越小聚集程度越高,随尺度的增大,逐渐过渡到随机分布和均匀分布,Ⅳ、Ⅴ级株丛在所有尺度上均为随机分布。(3)蒙古冰草种群Ⅰ级株丛与Ⅱ、Ⅲ级株丛,Ⅱ级株丛与Ⅲ级株丛在小尺度内呈显著正关联,随研究尺度的增大趋于无关联,其余各级株丛在0—5 m尺度上主要呈无关联。  相似文献

Summary Migrating movement of a pseudoplasmodium (slug) of the cellular slime mouldDictyostelium discoideum was analyzed using a time-lapse video tape recorder. Since slugs usually migrated with repeated interruptions of advance, migrating velocities were measured only within a period of forward movement. On the basis of some known facts and assumptions, a dynamical model for slug movement was formulated, which consists of motive force generated by slug cells against their intrinsic resistance and resistance of slime sheath at the tip. The migrating velocity of a slug depended neither on its width nor its volume, but solely on its length. Under any experimental conditions tested, a linear relationship always held between reciprocals of the two variables. The results were in good agreement with predictions of the model. Quantitative analyses of experimental results by the use of the model lead to the conclusions that a decrease in velocity at a low temperature is due to an increase in resistance of slime sheath at the tip, but that a decrease in velocity during prolonged migration is due to a decrease in motive force of constituent cells. An anterior isolate dissected from a slug migrated at a velocity greater than that of an intact slug of the same length. This was interpreted by the model to be due to the fact that the anterior cells have greater motive forces and intrinsic resistances than the posterior cells. The heterogeneous distributions of the two variables in the cell mass is discussed in reference to the mechanism of sorting out of cells.  相似文献

Capuchin monkeys have provided uneven evidence of matching actions they observe others perform. In accord with theories emphasizing the attentional salience of object movement and spatial relationships, we predicted that human-reared monkeys would better match events in which a human demonstrator moved an object into a new relation with another object or surface than other kinds of actions. Three human-reared capuchins were invited repeatedly by a familiar human to perform a fixed set of actions upon objects or upon their bodies, using the "Do as I do" procedure. Actions directed at the body were matched less reliably than actions involving objects, and actions were matched best when the monkey looked at the demonstration for at least 2 sec and performed its action within a few seconds after the demonstration. The most commonly matched actions were those that one monkey performed relatively often when the experiment began. One monkey partially reproduced three novel actions (out of 48 demonstrations), all three involving moving or placing objects, and two of which it also performed following other demonstrations. These findings contribute convergent evidence that capuchin monkeys display social facilitation of activity, enhanced interest in particular objects and emulation of spatial outcomes. This pattern can support the development of shared manipulative skills, as evident in traditions of foraging and tool use in natural settings. The findings do not suggest that human rearing substantively altered capuchins' ability or interest in matching the actions of a familiar human, although visual attention to the human demonstrator may have been greater in these monkeys than in normally reared monkeys.  相似文献

Quantitative histochemistry was used to investigate the tissue-specific compartmentation of soluble carbohydrates (sucrose, glucose, fructose), starch and malate in the laminar pulvinus, leaf blade and petiole of Phaselous coccineus L. at day and night positions of diurnal leaf movement. Total carbohydrate levels measured in a series of cross sections along individual pulvini of 24-d-old plants showed only small differences between the day and night positions of the respective leaf. In contrast, the level of malate changed during diurnal leaf movement, especially in the central part of a pulvinus. The levels of glucose and fructose in the pulvinus increased towards the transition zones between the pulvinus and lamina, and pulvinus and petiole, and this trend was even more pronounced for starch. By contrast, sucrose levels were highest in the pulvinus proper. The transverse compartmentation of metabolites was studied in distinct, approx. 0.5-mm-thick tissue slices from the central part of a pulvinus. These were dissected further into up to 14 distinct subsamples (bundle, bundle sheath, motor tissues, flanks). Irrespective of the position of the leaf (day or night), the central vascular core and the surrounding bundle sheath had high levels of sucrose (up to 500 mmol-(kg DW)–1) and low levels of glucose and fructose (below 100 mmol-(kg DW)–1), while in the cortex the situation was reversed. In the night position the level of sucrose decreased by approx. 30% in the bundle sheath and the central vascular core but not in the other sections. We thus suggest that because of the relatively small diurnal changes in their cortical pools, soluble sugars are not involved in the osmotic processes resulting in leaf movement. In contrast, pulvini from 14-d-old plants showed an interesting diurnal change in starch and malate pools in the outermost layer of the extensor. Here starch increased at night while the malate pool was lowered nearly stoichiometrically. Inverse pool sizes were found in the day position of the respective leaves. Although less significant, the opposite diurnal variation occurred in samples taken from the flexor region. We thus were able to locate areas of different carbohydrate activities in the laminar pulvinus of P. coccineus. The central vascular core, including the bundle sheath, is involved in temporary storage of photoassimilates, and the cortical regions are responsible for osmotically driven leaf movement. The untwisting movement of the hygroscopic awn of wild oats (Avena fatua L.) causes the caryopses to rotate in anticlockwise direction and to dislodge from the spikelet. While untwisting, the awn generates more torque than is required to separate the caryopsis. The periodic shattering of caryopses caused by awn movement may be biologically significant in that the chances of having favorable moisture conditions for caryopses germination in the field at the time of dispersal are increased.
