Effect of photoinhibition on algal photosynthesis: a dynamic model   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
Recent evidence from algal physiology and molecular biologyconfirms that photoinhibition is directly related to D1 proteindamage and recovery, and D1 protein damage leads to a decreasein electron transfer or an increase in turnover time of theelectron transfer chain. In this study, the turnover time ofthe electron transfer chain is defined as a function of therelative concentration of D1 protein in reaction centre II andthe photoinhibition processes due to D1 protein degradationare incorporated into a model of photosynthesis, initiated byDubinsky et al. (Plant Cell Physiol., 27, 1335–1349, 1986)and developed by Sakshaug et al. (Limnol. Oceanogr., 34, 198–205,1989). D1 protein damage is assumed to be both light and D1protein concentration dependent, and to be proportional to thecross-section of PSII (  相似文献

The kinetic properties of phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) carboxylasehave been studied among several Flaveria species: the C3 speciesF. cronquistii, the C3–C4 species F. pubescens and F.linearis, and the C4 species F. trinervia. At either pH 7 or8, the maximum activities (in µmol.mg Chl–1.h–1)for F. pubescens and linearis (187–513) were intermediateto those of the C3 species (12–19) and the C4 species(2,182–2,627). The response curves of velocity versusPEP concentration were hyperbolic for the C3 and C3–C4species at either pH 7 or 8 while they were sigmoidal for theC4 species at pH 7 and hyperbolic at pH 8. The Km values forPEP determined from reciprocal plots were lowest in the C3 species,and of intermediate value in the C3–C4 species comparedto the K' values of the C4 species determined from Hill plotsat either pH 7 or 8. Glucose-6-phosphate (G6P) decreased theKm values for PEP at both pH 7 and 8 in the C3 and C3–C4species. In the C4 species, G6P decreased the K' values at pH8 but increased the K' values at pH 7. In all cases, G6P hadits effect by influencing the activity at limiting PEP concentrationswith little or no effect on the maximum activity. At pH 8 andlimiting concentrations of PEP the degree of stimulation ofthe activity by G6P was greatest in the C4 species, intermediatein F. linearis, a C3–C4 species, and lowest in the C3species. In several respects, the PEP carboxylases of the C3–C4Flaveria species have properties intermediate to those of theC3 and C4 species. (Received April 30, 1983; Accepted August 22, 1983)  相似文献

An attempt has been made to separate constituents of marineseston samples: inorganic material, detritus and the algal species,by density gradient centrifugation, without affecting the physiologicalstate of the algae. A relatively inert gradient material, consistingof Percoll, salt and sucrose, was composed. Since the densitiesof detritus and algae as well as those of different algal speciesoften overlapped, only 10 of the 100 samples processed in thecourse of the year showed a reasonable separation. However,an enrichment with respect to one or more species was oftenachieved. Densities of eleven species of marine diatoms andof one dinoflagellate have been determined at different timesof the year. For eight diatom species and for the dinoflagellatethe following specific density ranges were established: Bidduiphiaaurita: 1.18–1.23 g cm–3, Biddulphia sinensis: 1.03–1.08g cm–3, Cerataulina bergonii: 1.03–1.06 g cm–3,Ditylum brightwellii: 1.07–1.13 g cm–3, Rhizosoleniadelicatula: 1.04–1.09 g cm–3, Skeletonema costatum:1.12–1.17 g cm–3, Streptotheca thamensis: 1.04–1.10g cm–3 , Thalassiosira rotula: 1.05–1.10 g cm–3,Peridinium sp.: 1.08–1.12 g cm–3. No seasonal variationin density was demonstrated. Gradients of different compositiondid not influence density measurements.  相似文献

Pseudocalanus species are important contributors to the secondaryproduction of the northern hemisphere mid- to high-latitudeoceans. In the coastal Gulf of Alaska, Pseudocalanus are presentyear round and are represented by three species. In 2001, Pseudocalanusmimus was the dominant Pseudocalanus species on the shelf duringspring and summer, comprising 30–100% of the total, whilePseudocalanus newmani dominated in Prince William Sound (10–90%).Pseudocalanus minutus were only abundant in Prince William Soundduring early spring. Egg production (by number and volume) wasa function of female prosome length and decreased from springto summer; however, significant variability was attributableto regional influences that were independent of size. For thesame sized female, P. newmani produced more eggs per clutchthan P. mimus. Pseudocalanus mimus, however, tended to havea larger mean egg size than P. newmani. Consequently, clutchvolumes of the two species were indistinguishable. Pseudocalanusegg production rates (EPRs) (eggs female–1 day–1)were lower in July and August (ca. 2–4) than April andMay (ca. 1–9), but total egg production by the population(eggs day–1) was nearly equivalent for the two time periodsdue to higher female concentrations in summer.  相似文献

The effects of blue light (B) pretreatments on internode extensiongrowth and their possible interaction with phytochrome mediatedresponses were examined in Sinapis alba seedlings grown for11 d under 280 µmol m–2 s–1 of continuousblue-deficient light from low pressure sodium lamps (SOX). SupplementaryB (16 µmol m–2 s–1) caused no detectable inhibitionof the first internode growth rate under continuous SOX, butgrowth rate was inhibited after transfer to darkness. This effect,and the growth promotion caused by far-red bend-of-day' lightpulses were additive. The addition of B at 16 µmol m–2s–1 during 11 d, or only during the first 9 or 10 d orthe latest 0.75, 1 or 2 d of the SOX pretreatment caused approximatelythe same extent of inhibition after the transition to darkness.A single hour of supplementary B before darkness caused morethan 50% of the maximum inhibition. However, 24 h of lower fluencerates of B (4 or 7 µmol m–2 s–1) were ineffective.Covering the internode during the supplementary B period didnot prevent the response to B after the transition to darkness.Far-red light given simultaneously with B (instead of the SOXbackground) reduced the inhibitory effect of B. Above a given threshold fluence rate, B perceived mainly inthe leaves inhibits extension growth in subsequent darkness,provided that high phytochrome photo-equilibria are presentduring the irradiation with B. To validate the orthologous relationshipbetween mKIAA and KIAA genes in detail, we examined their chromosomalpositions and evolutionary rate of synonymous substitutionsand confirmed that >93% of the mKIAA/KIAA gene pairs areorthologous. During the sequence analysis of mKIAA genes, wefound that 3'-untranslated region (3'-UTR) lengths of mKIAAand KIAA genes are extremely long. In the meanwhile, we havealso examined the tissue-specific expression of 1700 mKIAA genesusing cDNA microarray and verified predominantly their expressionin adult brain (Koga, H., Yuasa, S., Nagase, T., Shimada, K.,Nagano, M., Imai, K., Ohara, R., Nakajima, D., Murakami, M.,Kawai, M., Miki, F., Magae, J., Inamoto, S., Okazaki, N., Ohara,O. 2004, DNA Res., 11, 293–304). To connect these twoevidences, we statistically analysed the relationship betweenthem by using the mKIAA genes. Consequently, a positive correlationwas observed between the 3'-UTR lengths and the relative expressionintensities in adult brain. Furthermore, we searched sequenceelements in the 3'-UTR possibly related with their expressionand found some candidates regarding the brain-specific expression.  相似文献

The relative requirement of N and P (the optimum N:P ratio)by Dunaliella tertiolecta, Phaeodactylum tricornutum, Prymnesiumparvum and Thalassiosira pseudonana was studied under variouslight intensities and spectra. The ratio was determined as theratio of the minimum cell N and P concentrations (q0N and q0pwhen either nutrient was limiting. The ratio varied widely amongspecies; under light-saturation for growth (116 µEin m–2s–1 it ranged from 11.8 in D. tertiolecta to 36.6 in P.tricornutum. The ratio appeared to be higher at a sub-saturatingintensity (24 µEin m–2 s–1 in all except P.tricornutum, mainly because of higher qoN with little changein qoP. In T. pseudonana QoP also increased, resulting in aninsignificant change in the ratio. The ratio varied little withinthe range of saturation intensity. Light quality affected qoNand qoP as well as the ratio, and the pattern of change variedfrom species to species. The optimum ratio of individual specieswas linearly correlated to their qoN except in P. tricornutum.qoN for all species showed a linear correlation with cell proteinconcentrations irrespective of light conditions. The changeof optimum N:P ratios in the three species thus appears to berelated to changes in cell protein contents. The ratio of carbohydratesto protein remained constant regardless of light intensity orquality and was higher in P-limited cultures. We conclude thatchanges in light regime can strongly influence algal nutrientrequirements and species interrelationships by altering theoptimum cellular N:P ratio.  相似文献

Umbonium vestiarium (L.) forms virtually the entire diet of3 (possibly 4) species of naticid snails and the starfish Astropectenvappa Mueller annd Troschel on some north Penang sandy shores.Umbonium comprises about 99% of numbers and tissue of macrofauna.Predation totalled some 1.75 Umbonium (ca. 33 mg dry tissue).m-2.day-1 across much of the downshore sand flats rising to 2.3Umbonium (ca. 45 mg). m-2. day-1 near MLWS. Natica maculosaLamarck comprised > 80% of the predators and took 77–94%of the Umbonium eaten. Natica antonii Phillippi alone addedto this toll on the upper reaches of the zone while Polinicesspp and Astropecten appear to have taken 12–14% of thetotal toll of Umbonium near MLWS. Total predation is indicatedat 237–327 kJ.m-2. year-1 across the shore and this representsalmost the total flow of energy from primary consumers to intertidalbenthic predators on such shores and accounts for some 15.6%(lower shore)—20.5% (upper shore) of total Umbonium production. Flowering responses of two Australian and six Norwegian populationsof Poa annua and their putative ancestors P. infirma and P.supina were studied in controlled environments. The two Australianpopulations originating from suburban parks in Canberra hadopposite daylength flowering responses across the range of temperaturestested (9–21 °C), one being a quantitative short-day(SD) plant with no response to vernalization, the other a quantitativelong-day (LD) plant with a quantitative vernalization requirement(winter annual type). Variation in earliness of flowering withinthe former population was shown to be genetically determined,and testing of selfed progenies indicated that the populationis an aggregate of several largely homozygous lines with divergentflowering responses. Two lowland populations from southern Norwaywere both quantitative LD plants with no vernalization response,while two alpine snowbed populations from southern Norway andtwo high-latitude, subarctic populations from northern Norwaywere quantitative SD plants with an obligatory plant vernalizationor SD requirement for flowering. Two populations of P. supinaexhibited the same flowering responses as the alpine and high-latitudepopulations of P. annua with an obligatory plant vernalizationor SD requirement for flowering. A combination of SD and lowtemperature (9–12 °C) for 8–10 weeks was optimalfor induction and inflorescence initiation. On the other hand,P. infirma was found to be an early-flowering quantitative SDplant which flowered freely across the range of temperatures(9–21 °C) as a typical summer annual. The experimentsdemonstrate that virtually any kind of photoperiodic and vernalizationresponses can be found among populations of P. annua. The correlation between the velocities of cytoplasmic streamingand of translocation of 14C-photosynthate and 32P-phosphateassociated radioactivity has been investigated in whole plantsof the green freshwater alga Chara hispida L. Tracer was suppliedto the plant's rhizoid system in a split-chamber. The velocityof cytoplasmic streaming of 52±3.3 µm s–1compares with 57±10 µm s–1 found for 14C-transportand 32±20 µm s–1 found for 32P-transport.There was no indication of intercellular translocation at avelocity faster than visible streaming. Cytochalasin B inhibitedthe translocation of 32P and cytoplasmic streaming. CytochalasinB becomes fully effective in inhibiting streaming and transportafter an incubation time of at least 5 h. In the stoichiometric study of phyto–zooplankton interactions,a controversy exists about how Daphnia species regulate theirfeeding rate when submitted to low-quality food (i.e. high dietarycarbon:phosphorus [C:P] ratio). In this study, we gathered dataover 3 years on in situ clearance rates of a Daphnia galeatapopulation, by conducting grazing experiments from April 1998to October 2000 in the Esch-sur-Sûre reservoir (Grand-Duchyof Luxembourg). Observed clearance rates (2.5–13.5 mLindividual–1 day–1, mean 7.0 mL individual–1day–1) were correlated with population and environmentalvariables. Mean body size of Daphnia individuals was the bestpredictor of clearance rate (r2 = 0.639), followed by watertemperature (r2 = 0.262) and P concentration in the seston (r2  相似文献

The conclusion that over 25% of global primary production dependson direct algal/bacterial symbiosis involving vitamin B12 [Croftet al., (2005) Algae acquire vitamin B12 through a symbioticrelationship with bacteria. Nature, 438, 90–93] is patentlyfalse, for it is based on a misconception of the probable levelof the vitamin B12 requirement in marine pelagic algae. A reviewof the various published attempts at measuring this requirementsuggests that it is likely to be so low that oceanic and coastalconcentrations of the vitamin would usually be sufficient tosustain the populations that occur without the assistance ofdirect algal/bacterial symbiosis. The levels measured are discussedin relation to method (batch or continuous culture) and protocolsused. Requirement values considered by the author to be acceptablerange from 0.1 to 0.3 pM for the vitamin growth saturation constant(KS) and from 30 to 100 µL algal biomass pmol–1vitamin for the yield.  相似文献

The ingestion rates of the copepod, Diacyclops thomasi, on thesoft-bodied rotifer, Synchaeta pectinata, increased 10-fold(0.07–0.77 Synchaeta h–1) over the range 50–250prey l–1. The saturating functional response curve appearedsigmoid but was statistically indistinguishable from a parabola.The response curve was more linear and 10 times lower over thesame range of density when Diacyclops was offered Kerarellacochleans, a species having a stiffened lorica. Diacyclops maximizedits ingestion rate on Synchaeta as a function of the availablegut space. Predation effort, measured as clearance rates, waslinked tentatively to changes in swimming speed of Diacyclopsand was a function of hunger level. Diacyclops, which were starvedfor varying periods of time, increased their ingestion rateson Synchaeta up to a maximum (-3.0 h–1) after 7–10h of food deprivation. The gut passage time of Diacyclops wasestimated to be 7–8 h. Therefore, ingestion rates (andclearance rates) appeared to be strongly correlated to the volumeof food in the gut.  相似文献
