Pre-winter lipid stores of brown trout Salmo trutta L. parr were compared along altitudinal (0-920 m a.s.l.) and latitudinal (58-71° N) gradients. There were increases in lipid content (size adjusted to common lipid-free dry mass of 2·0 g, corresponding to fresh mass of 10 g) with both increasing altitude and latitude. Mean size-adjusted lipid content for S. trutta in high altitude rivers was 60% higher than at low altitude (0·29 and 0·18 g, respectively). Mean size-adjusted lipid content for S. trutta in northern rivers was 30% higher compared to that in southern rivers (0·30 and 0·23 g, respectively). There was a marked between-river variation in mean lipid storage, probably reflecting different strategies or opportunities for the pre-winter acquisition of lipid both locally within rivers and between different populations. This study shows that temperature or winter length, not latitudinal covariates such as annual light regime, governs lipid storage patterns in juvenile salmonids.  相似文献

Temporal and spatial variation in growth of juvenile Atlantic salmon   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Spatial and temporal variation in length‐at‐age and environmental factors affecting variation in growth rate of juvenile Atlantic salmon Salmo salar were studied using data from a long‐term study in the River Stjørdalselva, central Norway. Mean annual instantaneous growth rate among 1+ and 2+year juvenile Atlantic salmon varied between 0·59 and 1·50 g g−1 year−1 and mean instantaneous daily growth rate of young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) varied between 0·013 and 0·033 g g−1 day−1. Between year variation in growth was larger than the within year intra‐watercourse spatial variation. For YOY and 1+year Atlantic salmon, a major part of the observed between year variation in growth rates was explained by variation in mean daily water discharge and spring temperature. For 2+year juvenile Atlantic salmon, mean daily water discharge and cohort density were the only variables to significantly explain variation in growth rates. A large part of the within water‐course spatial variation could not be explained by temperature variations and juvenile Atlantic salmon in the uppermost areas of the river, experiencing the lowest ambient temperatures during the growth period, displayed the highest growth rates. Within the baselines set by temperature, biotic and abiotic factors connected to water flow regime and variation in food availability are suggested to be a major determinants of the temporal and spatial variation in juvenile Atlantic salmon growth rates.  相似文献

Activity and choice of areas offering different cover (substratum or surface ice) for juvenile Atlantic salmon Salmo salar were studied in experimental stream channels during winter. Channels were completely ice covered between December and March. During this period, the ice thickness increased from 50 to 300 mm after which 50% of the ice was experimentally removed and followed by c. 2·5-fold increase in discharge to simulate the effects of spring flood. Large substrata provided preferred habitats but areas with small substratum sizes were also used when full surface ice provided above-stream cover and the stream discharge was relatively low. The fish remained nocturnal throughout the study but the level of day activity significantly increased as the surface ice became thicker. Maximum movement distance during a 24 h period and homing-at-dawn behaviour remained at a constant level throughout the main winter, but significantly changed during the simulated spring flood (mean ± s . e . maximum extent of movements within 24 h increased from 1·1 ± 0·1 to 3·0 ± 0·5 m; homing behaviour decreased from the highest level of 89·3 to 34·6% during spring flood). Overwinter survival was high (92·9%). Relative mass increase during the study ranged from –8·3 to 28·5%, and 84% of the juvenile Atlantic salmon gained mass. The highest rates of mass increase were associated with frequent movements between areas of different substratum size. The results indicate that during winter: (1) Atlantic salmon parr preferred large substratum cover compared with surface ice cover at the fish densities studied here, (2) juvenile Atlantic salmon were predominantly nocturnal but diurnal activity increased as surface ice became thicker and (3) increase in water discharge during spring altered the behaviour of juvenile Atlantic salmon and may have caused additional habitat shifts.  相似文献

Maturation of male age-0 Atlantic salmon Salmo salar parr in New England, U.S.A. streams is rare (˜5%), but age-0 parr maturation was high (74%) by autumn in the Sawmill River following a massive, localized flood. Maturation was low in two other study streams (3, 7%) in the same year as the flood, and in the Sawmill River (6%) and the other rivers (5%) in the subsequent year, suggesting that high maturation rates were related to the flood. The high age-0 maturation rates appear to have been the result of greater growth opportunity following the flood. Masses of fish in October were two-fold greater in the Sawmill River (13·2 g) than in the other rivers (6·5, 6·9 g). Mechanisms contributing to the fast growth may include community reorganization following the flood and water temperature differences among rivers. The flood caused an age-0 year-class failure for brook trout Salvelinus fontinalis and brown trout Salmo trutta and a large reduction (69%) in the number of salmon compared to the other rivers, possibly reducing competition or agonistic interactions among remaining fish. Average water temperatures were slightly warmer in the Sawmill River (17·0° C) than in the other rivers (15·5, 14·9° C). By influencing community structure and growth of remaining fish, it appears that a strong environmental disturbance can also alter the direction and timing of life histories in Atlantic salmon.  相似文献

Over 25 years rod catches of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar increased proportionately as stock size increased ( r 2=0·581, P <0·001), with no overall trend between exploitation rate and stock size ( r 2=0·016, P >0·5). On a 15 year sub-set of these data annual effort ( P =0·804) and flow ( P =0·339) had little significance relative to stock size ( P <0·01) on variation in rod catches. Stock size, time, effort and flows had no influence on inter-annual variation of rod exploitation rate ( r 2=0·094, P =0·880). Pairwise correlation between variables confirmed these results. In 1998, weekly effort contributed significantly to overall catch variation ( P <0·001), while weekly flow did not ( P =0·438). These results are discussed in relation to the utility of rod catch data for deriving estimates of stock for spawning target compliance purposes.  相似文献

This study, conducted in deep pools in three rivers, is the first to show a clear three-dimensional habitat segregation in size groups (equivalent to age groups) of juvenile Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, and brown trout, S. trutta. Young-of-the-year (YOY) held position near the river bed and the river bank; height above bottom and distance from river bank increased significantly with fish size. Brown trout held position significantly further from the substratum, and were on average closer to the river bank, than salmon. The vertical segregation of young salmonids was most evident among young trout, with YOY being closest to the bottom. This size-dependent segregation is probably a result of different outcomes of the trade-off between the conflicting interests of higher food availability and greater predation risk in the upper part of the water column. We suggest that intercohort predation and competitive interactions were the main reasons why YOY of both species and salmon yearlings held positions close to the river bed. We found no evidence of salmon and trout parr preferring particular water depths, as studies in shallow parts of rivers have suggested, as the correspondence of use and availability of microhabitats at different water depths was high in the pools. The body composition of protein and fat in Atlantic salmon Salmo salar and brown trout Salmo trutta before and after winter was investigated in a temperate, small river, normally ice covered from the middle of November until the end of March. Fat, protein and specific energy declined greatly in winter but were replenished rapidly in spring. Rates of decline were slower for the smallest fish, which also had the lowest specific content of fat, protein, and energy, while the differences in absolute amounts were greatest for the largest fish. The mean specific fat content was reduced by 45–70% during winter, relative to the pre-winter period (September). Mean daily reductions in specific enegy of the larger size groups of brown trout (3·7 × 10−3 kJ g−1 day−1) were almost half of the corresponding values for the largest Atlantic salmon (6·3 × 10−3 kJ g−1 day−1) during winter. A minor reduction in protein content was found during winter, with mean reductions of 6–10% in comparison to those in September. During spring the fat content was replenished rapidly, particularly for the smallest salmon fry (a threefold increase from April to June). Fat content in the larger salmon and trout increased by about 1·8 times. Based on estimated metabolic rates, digested energy during wintertime may contribute about two-thirds of the brown trout fry's energy demand. For Atlantic salmon, the corresponding value is about 50%. The winter period put considerable stress on the young salmonids living in lotic environments, in particular for the smallest fry with the lowest energy content before winter and the largest losses during winter. This should make the fry more vulnerable to adverse abiotic and biotic factors.  相似文献

The effect of marine climatic conditions in the North Atlantic on the abundance of returning migrant Atlantic salmon Salmo salar in the River Foyle, Ireland was examined. Catches of Atlantic salmon from commercial netting stations significantly predicted a measure of population size independent of catches over a 48 year period, thus commercial net catches were used as a measure of relative population size over a longer period in this study. The North Atlantic Oscillation index in winter (wNAOI) provides a generalized measure of climate variation for the northern hemisphere and between 1875 and 2001, the wNAOI was a highly significant predictor of the 5 year running mean of catches of migrant Atlantic salmon returning to the River Foyle. When the index was <0·151, the wNAOI correlated significantly and negatively with Atlantic salmon catches, with 70% of the variance in population size explained by variation in conditions in the marine environment between 1875 and 2001. When the wNAOI was >0·151, however, this relationship uncoupled. The probability of catches exceeding the long‐term median was 2·34 times lower in years where the wNAOI was above the 0·151 breakpoint than for years when it was <0·151. The wNAOI exceeded the 0·151 threshold on 8 out of the 10 years prior to 2001. Models of climate change indicated that the NAOI is likely to increase significantly with time. If these models are correct, this study would lead to the conclusion that a decoupling of these broad scale climate effects on Atlantic salmon population size will become the norm. Data presented here suggests two consequences of this. Firstly that the value of the NAOI as a predictive tool for forecasting adult Atlantic salmon population size will be limited and secondly that the median population size will become lower in the future.  相似文献

Relationships between growth at sea, smolt size and age at sexual maturation of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar were tested. The fish were offspring of brood stocks sampled in eight Norwegian rivers at latitudes between 59° and 70° N, hatchery reared and released at smolting at the mouth of the River Imsa (59° N). Smolt size influenced the subsequent growth rate of Atlantic salmon. The larger the fish were at release, the slower the yearly length increment at sea. Mean sea age at sexual maturity, measured as proportion of the returning adults attaining sexual maturity at sea age 2 years, was significantly correlated with mean growth rate during the first year at sea and mean smolt size ( r 2= 0·74, P < 0·001). Fish attaining maturity at a relatively high sea age were more fast growing during their first year at sea than those maturing at a younger age. The results indicate that high sea age at sexual maturation is a population-specific characteristic and associated with high early growth rate at sea.  相似文献

The effect of acid water on the hatching of salmonid eggs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The survival of salmon Salmo salar , sea trout and brown trout Salmo trutta eggs in acid water in the range pH 3·5±7·0 was investigated over a period of three winters. The effects of fertilising the eggs in acid water at pH 4·0, 4·5 and 5·0, and dilution of the test media were also studied. There was considerable yearly variation in the numbers of eggs which hatched, but there were no marked differences between the three species in the tolerances of the eggs to acid water; pH 3·5 was lethal within 10 days to all the eggs, but at pH 4·5 and higher pH levels there was no obvious difference in hatching attributable to acidity.  相似文献

Variation in liver ultra‐structure and composition in relation to energy mobilization was investigated in female perch Perca fluviatilis from the Meuse River between August 2001 and June 2002. In April, just before spawning, the lipo‐somatic index ( I F) was 0·3%, the gonado‐somatic index ( I G) was 28% and the total lipid content of the liver was 2·53%. The average areas of lipid droplets and mitochondria were 0·05 and 0·06 μm2, respectively. Glycogen supply reached 7·9% of the total area of the hepatocyte. During the sexual resting period, females accumulated energy in perivisceral fat and in the liver to reach 1·6% I F and 4·85% of liver lipid content in August with lipid droplets average size of 0·09 μm2 and glycogen average area of 15%. Liver cells contained a weakly developed rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) and a great number of small mitochondria (average size 0·02 μm2). The I G was 0·6% at this time. During the whole annual cycle, the average lipid content of female liver never exceeded 3·9 ± 1·9%. The concentration of docosahexaenoic (DHA), linolenic and linoleic acids increased in mature gonads while linolenic and linoleic acids decreased in the liver during the same period. Fatty acid composition of muscles of perch was characterized by a high content of DHA.  相似文献

The nutritional status of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar parr was assessed by examining how proximate body composition and energy content (kJ g−1) were associated with the habitat rearing origin of parr utilizing fluvial or lacustrine areas. Comparisons were made among sampling sites within the two habitats, as well as between the two major habitat types applying both fixed effect and random effect models. Mean protein concentration varied from 13·87 to 15·67% among fluvial sites, and from 14·96 to 16·38% among lacustrine sampling locations. Mean fat concentration ranged from 1·71 to 3·32% and from 2·22 to 4·29% among fluvial and lacustrine locations, respectively, with energy concentration, on average, c . 11% higher in lacustrine parr. Interpretation of results of comparisons between habitats was dependent upon the statistical model used. Benefits associated with lacustrine rearing, such as greater body size and nutritional status, have implications for overwintering survival in fresh water as well as subsequent survival during initial sea entrance as smolts.  相似文献

Regional differentiation of North American Atlantic salmon at allozyme loci   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Allozyme variation was characterised by starch gel electrophoresis at 23 enzyme coding loci and one regulatory locus in Atlantic salmon from 53 rivers in Eastern Canada, encompassing the majority of the species' North American range. Variation among rivers was highly heterogeneous and eight of the 15 polymorphisms showed regionally restricted distributions. Nearest neighbour joining (NJ) analysis and multi‐dimensional scaling suggest six distinct regional groups; Labrador/Ungava, Gulf of Saint Lawrence, Newfoundland (excluding Gulf rivers), the Atlantic shore/Southern Uplands of Nova Scotia, the inner Bay of Fundy, and the outer Bay of Fundy. Approximately 25% of observed genetic variation was distributed among these regions with a weak though significant overall correlation of genetic and geographic distance (Mantel Test, r  = 0·255, P  = 0·005). Collectively, the rivers showed consistent divergence from European populations with strong bootstrap support for the two clusters across loci in the NJ analysis. Mean heterozygosity was 0·061 for both continental groups, but the European population showed more than twice the variation among populations. F ST values were 0·076 and 0·176 for North America and Europe, respectively, with an overall F ST of 0·330.  相似文献

Atlantic salmon salmo salar smolts of wild, hybrid and farmed parentage were individually tagged then reared in a sea cage for 8 months. The fish were sampled three times during this period. On all occasions, farmed Atlantic salmon displayed the highest abundance and density of sea lice Lepeophtheirus salmonis , whilst no significant differences were observed between hybrid and wild Atlantic salmon. Percentage variation between the lowest and highest infected groups was as high as 175 and 144% for L. salmonis abundance and density respectively (sample 2). The temporal stability of interindividual sea lice infection levels was investigated pair‐wise between samples using correlation (sample 1 v . 2, 1 v . 3 and 2 v . 3). When calculated using sea louse abundance, correlations ranged from r 2 = 0·11, P  < 0·01 to r 2 = 0·39, P  < 0·001, but, when the effects of fish size were controlled for by converting abundance to density, all correlations were <  r 2 = 0·1. Therefore, these data indicate that a fish's relative infection level in one sample was a weak predictor of its relative infection level in another sample. This suggests that identification of individual Atlantic salmon that display reduced susceptibility to sea lice, may be problematic.  相似文献

The compensatory growth of juvenile brown flounder Paralichthys olivaceus (body mass c. 12 g) following different thermal exposure was investigated. Fish were exposed to one of the five temperatures: 8·5 ( T 8·5), 13·0 ( T 13·0), 17·5 ( T 17·5), 22·0 ( T 22·0) and 26·5° C ( T 26·5) for 10 days and fish grew best at 22·0° C. Then the water temperature in all treatments was equably adjusted to 22·0° C over 3 days. At the end of the following 30 days after temperature adjustment, there were no significant differences between body masses of fish in the different treatments (wet body mass at the end of the experiment ranged from 22·13 to 24·56 g). Results indicated that the juvenile P. olivaceus achieved complete compensatory growth. Analysis of the dynamics of the feeding rates and feed conversion efficiencies indicated that compensatory growth of the fish experienced low temperature ( T 8·5, T 13·5 and T 17·5) or high temperature ( T 26·5) exposure was mainly dependent on increasing feed intake (hyperphagia) and possibly by improvement in feed conversion efficiency. The moisture content was not affected by different temperature exposure significantly. The lipid and energy content of juvenile P. olivaceus in T 8·5, however, were significantly lower than other treatment. Results of the current study indicate that a short period of low or high temperature exposure may not affect annual growth, but may affect lipid and energy deposition.  相似文献

Pair and group experiments were conducted to determine whether differences exist in feeding success between juvenile diploid and triploid salmonids in a competitive situation. In the pair experiments, 22 pairs (one diploid and one triploid) of size-matched Quebec-strain brook trout Salvelinus fontinalis (7·2–46·3 g) were fed an unlimited number of pellets three times a day for 5 days. Dominance was assigned to the fish which ate the most pellets within each pair. In the group experiments, groups of three diploid and three triploid size-matched fish were fed a restricted ration three times a day for 5 days. Hierarchical rank within the group was assigned based on the number of pellets consumed by each fish. The group experiment was repeated 10 times with Atlantic salmon Salmo salar (5·1–62·7 g), Quebec-strain brook trout (11·8-110·8 g), and large UNB-strain brook trout (18·2–33·0 g), and 12 times with smaller UNB-strain brook trout (0·6–2·0 g). A statistically significant difference in rank between ploidies was found only for the smaller UNB-strain brook trout in the group experiments, with diploids dominant over triploids. This suggests that there may be a difference in competitive feeding success between diploid and triploid brook trout early in development, but that this difference diminishes as the fish grow.  相似文献

In this study, effects of stock origin, fish size, water flow and temperature on time of river ascent of adult Atlantic salmon Salmo salar were tested. Brood stocks were collected in eight Norwegian rivers situated between 59 and 69° N. The fish were reared to smolts, individually tagged and released in the River Imsa, south-west Norway (59° N). Adults from all stocks approached the Norwegian coast concurrently, but Atlantic salmon ≥70 cm in natural tip length entered coastal water slightly earlier during summer than smaller fish. Atlantic salmon <70 cm, however, ascended the river significantly earlier and at lower water flow and higher water temperature than larger fish. Although largest in size, the fish from the northern populations (62–69° N) ascended the River Imsa almost 1 month earlier than those from the south (59–60° N). They seemed less restricted by the environmental factors than the fish originating from the more southern rivers. There was no apparent trend among years in time of river ascent. Maximum ascent per day occurred at water discharges between 12·5 and 15 m3 s−1 and at water temperatures between 10 and 12·5° C. There was a significant positive correlation between water flow and river ascent during the first part of the upstream run from July to September with best correlation for September, when multiple regression analysis indicated that water temperature had an additional positive effect. Stock origin, fish size and water discharge were important variables influencing the upstream migration of Atlantic salmon in small rivers.  相似文献

Inter‐individual differences in rates of routine (non‐feeding) metabolism and growth were evaluated in young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) juvenile Atlantic cod Gadus morhua . Rates of O2 consumption, CO2 production and ammonia (TAN) excretion were measured in 64, 25–43 mm standard length ( L S) YOY growing at different rates (0·27–0·47 mm day−1) in a common rearing tank. Parameter rates ( y ) increased allometrically ( y = a·Mb ) with increasing body mass ( M ) with b ‐values for O2 production, CO2 consumption and TAN excretion equal to 0·81, 0·89 and 0·56, respectively. In some cases, residuals from these regressions were significantly negatively correlated to fish growth rate. In no cases did residuals of parameter rates increase with increasing growth rate. These data suggest that, during unfed periods, relatively fast‐growing fish were more metabolically efficient than slower‐growing fish from the same cohort. The fish condition factor, derived from     , also significantly decreased with increasing growth rate. Results indicated differences in both the rates of routine energy loss and the patterns of growth allocation among YOY Atlantic cod. Since these physiological attributes were positively correlated with growth rate, they may be indicative of 'survivors' in field populations.  相似文献

Backcalculated lengths at the end of the first growth season in wild Atlantic salmon Salmo salar differed significantly between parr smolting at age 1, 2 and 3 years over a period of 11 years (i.e. 1983–1993). Mean body lengths of the respective age groups at the end of the first growth period were 11·1, 6·2 and 4·7 cm, respectively. The mean percentage distribution of fish smolting at age 1, 2 and 3 was 14, 78 and 7%, and the mean smolt age was 1·95 years. Mean lengths at smolting of age groups 1, 2 and 3 were 13·6, 15·8 and 17·5 cm, respectively. Females outnumbered males among the downstream migrating smolts with a mean sex ratio (females/ males) estimated at 1·61, with a significant female surplus in 7 of the 11 years sampled. Of the smolts sampled, 14% exhibited enlarged gonads indicative of parr maturation, and all were males (37% of the parr males sampled). Mean annual smolt density from 1975 to 1996 was 13·4 individuals 100 m−2 ranging between 0·3–31 smolts 100 m−2. Mean densities (100 m−2) of the smolts aged 1, 2 and 3 years were 1·5, 9·3 and 0·9 fish, respectively. Mean annual biomass for the 22-year period (1975–1996) was estimated at 437 g 100 m−2, with a range of variation from 136 to 683 g 100 m−2. Smolt age 2 made up 81% of the mean annual biomass (355 g 100 m−2) and smolt age 1 and 3, 8% (35 g 100 m−2) and 11% (47 g 100 m−2), respectively.  相似文献

Direct day and night underwater observations of juvenile Atlantic salmon Salmo salar during summer and autumn showed a duality in response to temperature between 7 and 11° C for young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) Atlantic salmon. They were predominantly diurnal in early summer and nocturnal in late summer although water temperatures were similar. Post‐YOY Atlantic salmon did not show a strong response to temperature as they were mostly nocturnal during the study period. It is suggested that the difference in activity patterns between YOY and post‐YOY Atlantic salmon can be explained by size‐dependent trade‐off between growth and predation risk.  相似文献
