1. This study examined genetic variation within and among populations of the caddis fly Tasiagma ciliata (Tasimiidae: Trichoptera) from rainforest streams in south-east Queensland, Australia.
2. Very low levels of genetic differentiation at large spatial scales, between subcatchments and between catchments, indicated that dispersal by the winged adults is widespread. However, significant genetic differentiation at the smallest spatial scale examined, within reaches in a single stream, suggested limited movement by larvae within streams.
3. A patchy distribution of deviations from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium and differences in patterns among allozyme loci suggested that populations in particular reaches were the result of only a few matings.
4. These results are surprising, given the large numbers of larvae present within a single reach. We suggest that stochastic effects of recruitment may underlie much of the spatial and temporal variation in population numbers in these rainforest streams.  相似文献

To examine the effects of seed dispersal on spatial genetic structure, we compare three sympatric species of forest herbs in the family Apiaceae whose fruits differ widely in morphological adaptations for animal-attached dispersal. Cryptotaenia canadensis has smooth fruits that are gravity dispersed, whereas Osmorhiza claytonii and Sanicula odorata fruits have appendages that facilitate their attachment to animals. The relative seed-dispersal ability among species, measured as their ability to remain attached to mammal fur, is ranked Sanicula > Osmorhiza > Cryptotaenia. We use a nested hierarchical sampling design to analyze genetic structure at spatial scales ranging from a few meters to hundreds of kilometers. Genetic differentiation among population subdivisions, estimated by average genetic distance and hierarchical F-statistics, has an inverse relationship with dispersal ability such that Cryptotaenia > Osmorhiza > Sanicula. In each species, genetic differentiation increases with distance among population subdivisions. Stochastic variation in gene flow, arising from seed dispersal by attachment to animals, may partly explain the weak relationship between pairwise spatial and genetic distance among populations and heterogeneity in estimates of single locus F-statistics. A hierarchical island model of gene flow is invoked to describe the effects of seed dispersal on population genetic structure. Seed dispersal is the predominant factor affecting variation in gene flow among these ecologically similar, taxonomically related species.  相似文献

1. Inland wetlands constitute ecological islands of aquatic habitat often isolated by huge areas of non-suitable terrestrial habitats. Although most aquatic organisms lack the capacity to disperse by themselves to neighbouring catchments, many species present widespread distributions consistent with frequent dispersal by migratory waterbirds.
2. A literature review indicates that bird-mediated passive transport of propagules of aquatic invertebrates and plants is a frequent process in the field, at least at a local scale. Both endozoochory (internal transport) and ectozoochory (external transport) are important processes.
3. The characteristics of the dispersed and the disperser species that facilitate such transport remain largely uninvestigated, but a small propagule size tends to favour dispersal by both internal and external transport.
4. We review the information currently available on the processes of waterbird-mediated dispersal, establishing the limits of current knowledge and highlighting problems with research methods used in previous studies. We also identify studies required in the future to further our understanding of the role of such dispersal in aquatic ecology.  相似文献

1. River corridors are well-known for their role in plant dispersal. The buoyancy of seeds, the possibility of dispersal by vegetative fragments, and the frequency and efficiency of dispersal among different river catchments determine linear distribution patterns. Little is known about the relative importance of these factors to observed patterns of genetic variation.
2. One hundred and fifty-six Nuphar lutea individuals from forty-four sampling sites in the river catchments of the Cidlina River, the Mrlina River and the Labe River (Czech Republic) were studied using ten microsatellite markers. Interpretation of patterns in genetic variation allowed several conclusions about dispersal mechanisms.
3. Vegetative long-distance dispersal is probably very limited in this species. Only one multilocus genotype was found in more than one sampling site. The distance between the sites was about 75 km.
4. To explain the distribution of Bayesian based clusters of related multilocus genotypes, both along-river and inter-river long-distance dispersals have to be invoked.
5. A marginally significant tendency for higher genetic diversity in the lower part of the river Cidlina was detected. Continuous downstream dispersal of seeds by water currents could be a valid explanation.
6. Significant positive autocorrelation was found among individuals at within-river distances of up to 25 km. Repeated dispersal of seeds over distances in the range of tens of kilometers is common.  相似文献

Knowledge of the dispersal status of group members is important to understanding how sociality may have evolved within a species. I assessed the effectiveness of four techniques for elucidating dispersal behaviour in a rock-dwelling rodent ( Ctenodactylus gundi ) with small group sizes (2–10 animals): genetic parentage assignment, haplotype data and kinship analyses, assignment testing, and F -statistics. The first two methods provided the greatest insight into gundi dispersal behaviour. Assignment testing and F -statistics proved of limited use for elucidating fine-scale dispersal, but could detect large-scale patterns despite low sex-biased dispersal intensity (1.9 : 1) because of moderate genetic differentiation among groups ( F ST = 0.10). Findings are discussed in light of current dispersal theory. In general, gundi dispersal is plastic, and seems to be dependent on body weight (for males), group composition, and scale of analysis (total dispersal events recorded within the population were almost twice the immigration rate into the population). Most groups were comprised of a single matriline and one immigrant male. Immigrant rather than philopatric males bred with group females. Dispersal among groups was male-biased, but dispersal or philopatry could occur by either sex. During a drought, both sexes delayed dispersal and cooperative social units formed. Whether such behaviour resulted directly from the drought or not remains unclear, however, since comparative information was not available from nondrought years. Combining fine-scale analyses with information on large-scale patterns provided substantial insight into gundi dispersal behaviour despite the limited movement of animals during a drought, and may prove useful for elucidating dispersal behaviour in other social animals.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. The freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium australiense (Decapoda: Palaemonidae), is an abundant species throughout the rivers of western Queensland, and it is thought to have effective dispersal capabilities. Given the very low topographical relief of the western Queensland landscape and the vast nature of episodic flooding, it was predicted that widespread dispersal in this species would occur within, and possibly between the four major catchments of the region: the Darling, Bulloo, Cooper and Diamantina. We analysed eight polymorphic allozyme systems and a fragment of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) gene to determine the extent of recent and historical patterns of dispersal at nested spatial scales, within and between catchments.
2. Large and significant levels of allozyme and mtDNA differentiation were revealed among all catchments, indicating that dispersal of M. australiense does not occur across catchment boundaries, although this species is reportedly capable of overland movement. In contrast, no significant patterns of genetic differentiation were resolved between major subcatchments of the Darling and Cooper, or between sites within these subcatchments, indicating that populations of M. australiense are panmictic within catchments.
3. The MtDNA data resolved two divergent and reciprocally monophyletic clades, with the first representing the Darling catchment, and the second corresponding to the Bulloo, Cooper and Diamantina catchments. We postulate that extreme variation in historical climatic patterns and palaeohydrologic conditions played an important role in shaping the population structure of M. australiense throughout western Queensland during the Quaternary.  相似文献

1. Terrestrial dispersal by aquatic insects increases population connectivity in some stream species by allowing individuals to move outside the structure of the stream network. In addition, individual survival and reproductive success (as well as dispersal) are tightly linked to the quality of the terrestrial habitat. 2. In historically forested catchments, deforestation and altered land use have the potential to interfere with mayfly dispersal or mating behaviours by degrading the quality of the terrestrial matrix among headwater streams. We hypothesised that loss of tree cover in first‐order catchments would be associated with an increase in population substructure and a decrease in genetic diversity of mayfly populations. 3. To test this hypothesis, we investigated spatial patterns of genetic variation in the common mayfly Ephemerella invaria across a gradient of deforestation in the central piedmont region of eastern United States. Intraspecific genetic diversity and population substructure were estimated from data obtained using fluorescent amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers. 4. We found that mayfly populations had low population substructure within headwater stream networks and that genetic diversity was strongly negatively correlated with mean deforestation of the first‐order catchments. The large‐scale pattern of population substructure followed a pattern of isolation by distance (IBD) in which genetic differentiation increases with geographical distance, but assignment tests placed a few individuals into populations 300 km away from the collection site. 5. Our results show that loss of genetic diversity in this widespread aquatic insect species is co‐occurring with deforestation of headwater streams. 6. Most arguments supporting protection of headwater streams in the United States have centred on the role of these streams as hydrological and biogeochemical conduits to downstream waters. Our work suggests that headwater stream land use, and specifically tree cover, may have a role in the maintenance of regional genetic diversity in some common aquatic insect species.  相似文献

1. Allozymes were used to measure genetic variation within and among regional populations of the caddisfly Orthopsyche fimbriata and the mayfly Acanthophlebia cruentata in North Island New Zealand streams.
2. High levels of genetic differentiation were recorded in populations of O. fimbriata within and among catchments separated by more than 100 km, but little or no differentiation in populations separated by around 10 km. The Auckland isthmus appears to be a major barrier to north–south gene flow, with nearly fixed allelic differences at one locus. Genotype frequencies conformed to Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium.
3.  Acanthophlebia cruentata had low levels of genetic variation; the results are unexpected given that O. fimbriata apparently has greater potential for dispersal. The limited genetic data for A. cruentata provided evidence for genetic differentiation among populations separated by around 100 km, or more, within catchments and some differentiation between catchment populations separated by only 25 km.  相似文献

1. In a region of south‐eastern England, we investigated the hierarchical genetic structure of populations of two stream‐dwelling caddisflies (Trichoptera: Polycentropodidae) with contrasting distributions: Plectrocnemia conspersa inhabits numerous small, patchily distributed seeps and streams, while the confamilial Polycentropus flavomaculatus is found in fewer but larger streams and rivers. We also contrasted the genetic structure of P. conspersa in the lowland south‐east with that in an upland region in the north west. 2. Microsatellite genotypes were obtained from samples of both species taken from a ‘core area’ and at sites 15, 40 and 100 km from this core (two regions for P. conspersa, totalling 45 sites and 1405 larvae; one region for P. flavomaculatus, totalling 10 sites and 269 larvae). 3. The genetic structure of P. conspersa differed in the two regions. In the upland north‐west, significant genetic differentiation was observed at a spatial scale of around 40 km from the core, while there was no structure in the lowland south‐east up to around 100 km. Areas of high altitude did not appear directly to reduce gene flow, whereas other potential landscape barriers, including particular geological formations, large urban areas and the sea had a pronounced effect. 4. Weak genetic differentiation in P. conspersa across large distances, particularly in the lowland south‐east, suggests that it disperses strongly, facilitating gene flow within and between catchments. Conversely, for P. flavomaculatus we found strong genetic differentiation between almost all sites, suggesting that dispersal is much more limited. 5. Greater dispersal in the patchily distributed P. conspersa than in P. flavomaculatus, which occupies larger and presumably more persistent habitats, could be a general feature of other similarly distributed aquatic insects. While higher relief is potentially a partial barrier to dispersal, P. conspersamust have effective gene flow through such apparently inhospitable terrain, perhaps attributable to dispersal between neighbouring small and ephemeral populations. Indeed, its exploitation of headwaters and seeps requires the ability to disperse between such sites. Apparently it cannot, however, overcome more continuous barriers, consisting of large tracts of landscape with few habitable larval sites. Such landscapes, including those created by humans, may have a stronger effect on population connectivity and colonization in the longer term.  相似文献

Styela clava , an ascidian native to the northwest Pacific, was first recorded in the Atlantic at Plymouth, southwest England, in 1953. It now ranges in the northeast Atlantic from Portugal to northern Denmark, and has colonized the east coast of North America. Within the region of first introduction, we aimed to characterize current genetic diversity in the species, elucidate the respective roles of human-aided vs. natural dispersal, and assess the extent of larval dispersal by looking for genetic differentiation at very small scales. Eight sites, mostly marinas, were studied along c . 200 km of coast in southwest England encompassing Plymouth. Five microsatellite loci were genotyped in 303 individuals to analyse gene flow at regional (among sites) and fine (within sites) scales. F -statistics and assignment tests were used to investigate regional genetic structure. At the fine scale, deviation from mutation–drift equilibrium was tested, and isolation by distance and genetic clustering analyses were undertaken. Significant genetic differentiation existed between sites, unrelated to geographical separation; migration between geographically distant marinas was inferred, highlighting the likely importance of human-mediated dispersal in range expansion and occupancy by S. clava . Fine-scale population structure was present within at least four sites, which may be explained by the limited dispersal ability of this ascidian and recruitment from differentiated pools of larvae. Populations in enclosed marinas had higher self-recruitment rates than those in open sites. Some marinas might therefore function as reservoirs of propagules for subsequent spread, whereas others might be sinks for migrants.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. Population genetic structure of Wormaldia tagananana, a caddis with a narrow geographic range and endemic to the Canary Islands, was investigated by studying allozyme variation at 11 putative loci in five of the eight extant populations on Tenerife and La Gomera. Genetic variability, population structure and gene flow were compared with those reported previously in more widespread Trichoptera, particularly Canarian populations of the non-endemic limnephilid Mesophylax aspersus, to examine the hypothesis that the Wormaldia , with its restricted range, would exhibit relatively little genetic variability and gene flow.
2. Despite it being a narrow-range island endemic, genetic variability in populations of W. tagananana is broadly similar to values reported for more widespread caddis.
3. Significant genetic population structure was observed in W. tagananana (overall F ST = 0.387), greater than that seen in M. aspersus and amongst the highest reported for lotic caddis to date. Several site- and island-specific alleles were reported, providing further evidence for the relative isolation of individual Wormaldia populations.
4. Significant deviations from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium were found in four of five populations (overall F IS = 0.675). This could result from within-locality population substructuring, or offspring within a reach being the product of a limited number of matings.
5. This genetic evidence supports the hypothesis that the restricted range of W. tagananana is, at least in part, because of limited dispersal ability.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Australia has a unique and speciose gall-inducing scale insect fauna that is primarily associated with Myrtaceae. Much of the diversity is currently undescribed or uncharacterised.
2. This study concerns Apiomorpha munita (Hemiptera), a scale insect that induces characteristic four-horned galls on eucalypts of subgenus Symphyomyrtus and exhibits extraordinary karyotypic diversity (2n = 6 – 2n > 100). The three described subspecies of A. munita are each confined to hosts in different sections of Eucalyptus . Previous chromosomal data, however, cast doubt on the validity of the groupings, as two of the subspecies share multiple, different karyotypes (2n = 6, 20, 22, and 24).
3. Allozyme data were used to examine species delimitation, chromosome evolution, host associations and population structure in A. munita .
4. A cryptic-species radiation was revealed, with at least five taxa each restricted to a discrete set of host eucalypt species. This is consistent with host-associated speciation.
5. Karyotypic variation within A. munita partially fits the five distinct genetic groups, but there are additional chromosomal changes that are not accompanied by detected genetic differentiation.
6. The population structure of taxa within the A. munita species complex suggests that there are high levels of inbreeding, as would be expected for scale insects in which adult females are sessile. Some genotypes, however, are found over great distances (up to 1100 km). This is an unusual population structure because it combines low mobility and local differentiation with occasional long-distance dispersal, probably mediated by wind-dispersal of first-instar nymphs.  相似文献

Terrestrial environments allow the adults of some aquatic insects to disperse between headwater streams, which may be important for maintaining population connectivity and persistence. Winged adult stages of aquatic insects are particularly sensitive to degradation of terrestrial habitat, relying on it for food, reproduction and dispersal. In this study we examined the genetic pattern of the Australian mayfly Ulmerophlebia sp. AV2, in north‐eastern New South Wales, and compared the genetic diversity in forested and partially deforested sub‐catchments. Our hypotheses were (i) patterns of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variation in the Leptophlebiidae mayfly Ulmerophlebia sp. AV2 show a pattern of structuring that reflects low or widespread dispersal along the stream network and across catchments; and (ii) genetic diversity will be lower in partially deforested sub‐catchments compared to forested sub‐catchments. We found gene flow was not restricted among headwater streams within sub‐catchments but was restricted at distances >15 km. Genetic diversity was high (mean haplotype diversity >0.85) in both control and harvested sub‐catchments. Instead, a historical signature of population expansion was detected which is consistent with findings for other aquatic insect taxa of eastern Australia. Our results suggest that the selective harvesting management strategy, including the use of riparian buffer zones, within these sub‐catchments does not appear to restrict dispersal between streams or erode diversity within streams for Ulmerophlebia sp. AV2. Selective harvesting therefore appears to have minimal impacts on terrestrial/aquatic links in the life cycle of this insect.  相似文献

Systematics and taxonomy of hares of the genus Lepus (Lagomorpha) are under contentious debate, and phylogenetic relationships among many taxa are not well understood. Here we study genetic differentiation and evolutionary relationships among North African hares, currently considered subspecies of Lepus capensis , cape hares ( L. capensis ) from the Cape province in South Africa, and brown hares ( L. europeaus ) from Europe and Anatolia, using maternally (mtDNA) and biparentally (allozymes) inherited markers. A polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) analysis of a c. 1.8 kb long segment of the mitochondrial control region using eight hexanucleotide-recognizing restriction endonucleases yielded 28 haplotypes, and horizontal starch gel electrophoresis of proteins encoded by 25 structural gene loci revealed 52 alleles at 18 polymorphic loci. Diverse phylogenetic analyses (neighbor joining dendrogram, median joining network, multidimensional scaling of pairwise distances, AMOVA, F -statistics, hierarchical F -statistics) of genetic variants revealed marked substructuring of mtDNA into three phylogeographic groups, namely an African, a central European, and an Anatolian, but a somewhat less pronounced overall differentiation of the nuclear genome, despite a relatively high number of population-specific (private) alleles. However, all our results are not incongruent with Petter's (1959: Mammalia 23 , 41; 1961: Z. f. Säugetierkunde 26 , 30; 1972 : Société Des Sciences Naturelles et Physiques du Maroc 52 , 122) hypothesis that North African hares generally belong to L. capensis and that brown hares should be included in this species as well.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Good conservation management is underpinned by a thorough understanding of species' historical and contemporary dispersal capabilities along with the possible adaptive or neutral processes behind any spatio-temporal genetic structuring. These issues are investigated with respect to the rare damselfly Coenagrion mercuriale (Charpentier) – the only odonate species currently listed in the U.K.'s Biodiversity Action Plan – in east Devon where its distribution has become fragmented.
2. The two east Devon C. mercuriale populations, only 3.5 km apart, have accumulated strong differences in frequencies of alleles at 14 microsatellite loci as a consequence of poor adult dispersal and drift. There is no contemporary migration between sites.
3. A genetic signature of population decline at both sites corresponds with known demographic reductions. Coenagrion mercuriale in east Devon are now significantly genetically less diverse than those from a population stronghold in the Itchen Valley.
4. Colonies would benefit from improved connectivity between areas and possibly by a transfer of individuals from other ecologically similar areas.
5. Because C. mercuriale has a semivoltine life cycle throughout the U.K., the possibility that alternate-year cohorts are reproductively isolated is explored. Genetic differentiation among cohorts is an order of magnitude less than between sites, suggesting that some larvae delay their development into adults for a year and recruit to a different cohort.
6. To our knowledge, this is the first study to document migration and gene flow between alternate-year cohorts in a species of odonate. From a conservation standpoint, the cohorts do not require separate management.  相似文献

About 900 individuals of the intertidal polychaete Ophelia cf. bicornis were collected at four sandy beaches in Corsica, ten in Sardinia and one in Tuscany (Western Mediterranean). They were analysed morphologically and genetically to clarify the taxonomic status of the littoral species of Ophelia in the study area and to assess the population genetic structuring. Two morphotypes were distinguished on the basis of the number of nephridiopore pairs (five or six). Genetic distances, F -statistics and analysis of molecular variance based on eight allozyme genetic markers were consistent in showing the two morphotypes to separate at species level. Thus, the two morphotypes which most authors have included in O. bicornis s.l. are not one morphologically variable taxon, but instead constitute two valid species, namely O. bicornis Savigny, 1818, with six pairs of nephridiopores, and O. barquii Fauvel, 1927, with five pairs of nephridiopores. Mechanisms of ecological speciation in a background of gene flow can be taken into account to explain the origin of the two species. We investigated the genetic structure of Eryngium alpinum (Apiaceae) in an Alpine valley where the plant occurs in patches of various sizes. In a conservation perspective, our goal was to determine whether the valley consists of one or several genetic units. Habitat fragmentation and previous observations of restricted pollen/seed dispersal suggested pronounced genetic structure, but gene dispersal often follows a leptokurtic distribution, which may lead to weak genetic structure. We used nine microsatellite loci and two nested sampling designs (50 × 50 m grid throughout the valley and 2 × 2 m grid in two 50 × 10 m quadrats). Within the overall valley, F -statistics and Bayesian approaches indicated high genetic homogeneity. This result might be explained by: (1) underestimation of long-distance pollen/seed dispersal by in situ experiments and (2) too recent fragmentation events to build up genetic structure. Spatial autocorrelation revealed isolation by distance on the overall valley but this pattern was much more pronounced in the 50 × 10 m quadrats sampled with a 2-m mesh. This was probably associated with limited primary seed dispersal, leading to the spatial clustering of half-sibs around maternal plants. 1. The unique aquatic fauna of the island‐like groundwater springs of arid inland Australia raises important questions as to how aquatic species persist in very isolated and fragmented habitats and the role that dispersal may play in mitigating/mediating the influence of landscape structure and determining population structure. By determining the relationship between genetics and geography (i.e. phylogeography), the historical processes responsible for population structure can be determined. 2. We undertook comparative phylogeographic studies of invertebrates from springs south of Lake Eyre. Clusters of springs lying within and between surface drainage catchments (which provide a potential connection between springs) were sampled, and the phylogeographic structure of four coexisting species, an ostracod Ngarwa dirga, a snail Fonscochlea accepta, an isopod Phreatomerus latipes and an amphipod Wangiannachiltonia guzikae, was examined. 3. Clear differences in the geographic patterns of genetic structure were found amongst the four species. No discernable genetic structure was found in ostracod and snail populations, even amongst springs lying 20 km apart in separate surface catchments; isopod populations were highly genetically structured amongst springs located in separate catchments, but not within catchments, whilst amphipod populations were highly genetically structured amongst springs both within and between catchments. 4. The results suggest that differences in dispersal ability of each species, and not the overall fragmented nature of the springs, may have led to large differences in phylogeographic history. Interestingly, the relative dispersal ability of these species may be related to their vulnerability to and recovery from large‐scale flood events. Therefore, despite the highly isolated and fragmented nature of the springs, the landscape has not strongly influenced the population structure of the aquatic invertebrate community as a whole nor has it led to the evolution of common life histories.  相似文献
