Antennal lobe interneurons of male Spodoptera littoralis (Boisd.) were investigated by using intracellular recording and staining techniques. Physiological and morphological characteristics of local interneurons and projection neurons responding to sex pheromone and plant-associated volatiles are described. The interneurons identified were divided into three groups, depending on their physiological response characteristics. Both types of interneurons, local interneurons and projection neurons, were described in all three groups. 1. Interneurons responding exclusively to sex pheromone stimuli, displayed different degrees of specificity. These neurons responded to either one, two, three or all four of the single sex pheromone or sex pheromone-like compounds tested. Most of these neurons also responded to a mixture of the two pheromone components present in the female S. littoralis blend. Two local interneurons and one projection neuron were identified as blend specialists, not responding to the single female produced sex pheromone components, but only to their mixture. Five pheromone specific projection neurons arborized in one or more subcompartments of the macroglomercular complex (MGC) and some of them had axonal branches in the calyces of the mushroom body and in different parts of the lateral protocerebrum. 2. Interneurons responding only to plant-associated volatiles varied highly in specificity. Neurons responding to only one of the stimuli, neurons responding to a variety of different odours and one neuron responding to all stimuli tested, were found. Three specialized local interneurons had arborizations only in ordinary glomeruli. One specialized and three less specialized local interneurons had arborizations within the MGC and the ordinary glomeruli. The projection neurons responding only to plant-associated volatiles had mostly uni- or multiglomerular arborizations within the ordinary glomeruli. 3. Interneurons responding to both sex pheromones and plant-associated stimuli varied in specificity. Individual interneurons that responded to few plant-associated odours mostly responded to several pheromone stimuli as well. Projection neurons responding to most of the plant-associated volatiles also responded to all pheromone stimuli. Two local interneurons responding to both stimulus groups, arborized within the MGC and the ordinary glomeruli. Projection neurons mostly arborized in only one ordinary glomerulus or in one compartment of the MGC. The variation in specificity and sensitivity of antennal lobe interneurons and structure-function correlations are discussed.  相似文献

A habituation-discrimination technique was used to demonstrate that male and female prairie voles can discriminate individual differences in the odours of soiled shavings and urine from male and female conspecifics. A second experiment, employing a Y-maze, showed that females significantly preferred the odours of their mate over those of either another mated male or an unmated male. Males preferred their mate's odours to those of other mated females but showed no significant preference between the odours of their mate and those of a virgin female. A third experiment demonstrated that, over a 10-h period, females built nests and/or stayed preferentially on the side of a Y-maze containing their mate's odours. Likewise, males preferentially built nests in their mate's side compared to the side containing odours from a virgin female. However, although the same trend was present when mate odours were paired with odours from another mated female, the preference was not statistically significant. Taken as a whole, these results indicate that mate recognition may be an important of individually distinctive odours in this species.  相似文献

Signals of tens up to hundreds of thousands of (mostly olfactory) receptor cells on an insect antenna are switched to a comparatively low number of neurones in the antennal lobe of the deutocerebrum in circumscribed units of neuropile, the glomeruli. Each glomerulus is connected via its output neurone to two separate neuropiles (calyces of mushroom body, and lateral lobe) of the protocerebrum. Local interneurones interconnect between the glomeruli. Certain modes of convergence between receptors and central neurones provide for a very high sensitivity of the latter to certain odours and their sensitivity for complex odour stimuli, and in many cases for a marked multimodality. Anatomical and physiological data are given especially for pheromone sensitive neurones and their projections.  相似文献

Summary The morphological features of descending interneurons that responded to the artificial bending of statolith hairs were assessed with intracellular recording and staining techniques. Seven statocyst interneurons were identified on the basis of their structure and response characteristics and designated as interneurons S1 to S7. All seven identified interneurons project to the optic lobe, where the optic nerve also projects, and to the dorsal part of the tritocerebrum, where the eyestalk motoneurons originate. All except interneuron S6 also extend their major branches to other neuropilar regions. S2 projects to the dorsal part of the deutocerebrum, where the statocyst nerve terminates, and S3 to the dorsal part of deutocerebrum and the antennal lobe. Four other interneurons (S1, S4, S5, S7) also extend their branches to the parolfactory lobe to which the statocyst nerve projects as well as to the deutocerebrum and antennal lobe. The extensive dendritic projections of S1–S7 suggest that they are complex multimodal interneurons rather than simple relay interneurons, receiving at least visual and statocyst sensory information. The function of the antennal lobe branches, however, has yet to be determined since the functional role of antennal input in equilibrium control is unknown.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. In response to minute quantities of female sex pheromone, the male silkworm moth, Bombyx mori L., walks upwind to locate the odour source. The axons of antennal receptors specific for the two known components of the pheromone terminate in the deutocerebrum. In this study, single interneurons were recorded extracellularly in the deutocerebrum of the male silkworm moth. Responses were characterized as the antennae were presented with puffs of clean air, or air containing either or both components of the female pheromone, bombykol and bombykal. An apparatus is described which added bombykol or bombykal to a constant air stream flowing over the antenna. Most units (87%) showed qualitatively different responses to bombykol and bombykal. A majority of the pheromone-sensitive units (65%) also showed mechanosensory responses to air puffs. Two units were recorded which were slightly inhibited by either bombykol or bombykal alone, but were excited by a mixture of the two.  相似文献

The number and distribution of descending brain neurons have been investigated in the cricket. The results are based on retrograde labeling of these cells with either Lucifer yellow or Neurobiotin via whole or small split portions of the cervical connectives. Various groups of cells and single neurons have been identified, and the morphology of more than 40 cells is described. Nearly 200 descending brain neurons can be stained via one cervical connective. Their perikarya are concentrated in clusters that occur ipsi- and contralateral to the filled connective and that lie dorsal and ventral in the brain. Descending cells only arborize in the nonglomerular neuropils of the brain and never branch in the optic lobe. Cells descending ipsilaterally never arborize in the contralateral hemisphere, whereas contralateral descending neurons often branch in both hemispheres. Irrespective of soma position, cells can arborize in the ventral and/or dorsal neuropils of the brain. Neurons with somata in the protocerebrum often have branches in the deutocerebrum and vice versa. The main arborizations of the cells from the prominent ventral i5 group are found in the same part of the protocerebrum. In contrast, various cells arborize in the ventral posterior deutocerebrum, but their somata are not located in different clusters. Thus, neurons from the same cluster may, but need not necessarily, arborize in the same brain area.  相似文献

Abstract. Receptor neurones with high selectivity and sensitivity to plant odours were found within short sensilla trichodea on the antenna of both female and male Spodoptera littoralis (Boisd.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) by using single-sensillum recording techniques. In 112 sensilla from females and forty-one from males, twenty-four different receptor neurone types were characterized according to their specificity. Altogether, twenty-six plant and three sex pheromone compounds were tested. Receptor neurones responding with high specificity to flower odours, green leaf volatiles, oviposition deterrents and other general host plant odours were identified. In twenty-one receptor neurone types, responses were elicited by one or several plant compounds, and in three types responses were elicited by sex pheromone compounds. The majority of the receptor neurones responded to only one or two of the tested compounds. In general, only one of the two receptor neurones in a sensillum responded to any of the compounds tested. An exception was a receptor neurone responding to plant odours (green leaf volatiles) and another receptor neurone responding to a sex pheromone compound ([Z]-7-dodecenyl (acetate), which occurred in the same sensillum. The majority of the receptor neurones displayed a high sensitivity to plant odours. No morphological difference was identified the different sensillum types.  相似文献

1. Single unimodal (olfactory) or multimodal (olfactory and mechanosensory) neurons in the antennal lobe of the deutocerebrum of the American cockroach were characterized functionally by microelectrode recording, and their morphological types and positions in the brain were established by dye injection. Thus individual, physiologically identified neurons of known shape could be mapped in reference to the areas of soma groups, glomeruli, tracts and their projection regions in the brain. 2. All of these neurons send processes to deutocerebral glomeruli, i.e., the regions in which the axons of antennal sensory cells terminate. Output neurons have axons that leave the deutocerebrum whereas local interneurons are anaxonic. 3. An output neuron innervates only one glomerulus, sending its axon into the calyces of the corpora pedunculata (CP) in the protocerebrum, where by multiple branching they reach many CP neurons. The same axons send collaterals into the lateral lobe of the protocerebrum. Because of this arrangement, each deutocerebral glomerulus is represented individually and separately in the two projection regions. The fine structure of the endings of the deutocerebral axons in the protocerebrum is described. In the CP calyces they form microglomeruli with typical divergent connectivity. 4. A local interneuron innervates many glomeruli without sending processes to other parts of the brain. 5. Unimodal olfactory and multimodal neurons can be either output neurons or local interneurons; multimodal information is sent to the protocerebrum directly, in parallel with the unimodal information. 6. At least one glomerulus--the macroglomerulus of the male deutocerebrum--is specialized so as to provide an exclusive topographic representation of certain olfactory stimuli not represented elsewhere (female sexual pheromone).  相似文献

Previous neuropharmacological studies have described the presence of a nitric oxide-cGMP signalling pathway in the crayfish abdominal nervous system. In this study we have analysed the distribution of putative nitric oxide synthase (NOS)-containing ascending interneurones in the crayfish terminal abdominal ganglion using NADPH-diaphorase (NADPHd) histochemistry. Ascending intersegmental interneurones were stained intracellularly using the fluorescent dye Lucifer yellow and the ganglia containing the stained interneurones subsequently processed for NADPHd activity. Fluorescence persisted throughout histochemical processing. These double-labelling experiments showed that 12 of 18 identified ascending interneurones were NADPHd positive. Thus many ascending interneurones that process mechanosensory signals in the terminal ganglion may contain NOS, and are themselves likely sources of NO which is known to modulate their synaptic inputs. Three clear relationships emerged from our analysis between the effects of NO on the synaptic inputs of interneurones, their output properties and their staining for NADPH-diaphorase. First were class 1 interneurones with no local outputs in the terminal ganglion, the NE type interneurones, which had sensory inputs that were enhanced by NO and were NADPHd positive. Second were class 1 interneurones with local and intersegmental output effects that had sensory inputs that were also enhanced by NO but were NADPHd negative. Third were class 2 interneurones with local and intersegmental outputs that had synaptic inputs that were depressed by the action of NO but were NADPHd positive. These results suggest that NO could selectively enhance specific synaptic connections and sensory processing pathways in local circuits.  相似文献

Sex recognition is based on colour signals in many species of lizards. However, olfactory stimuli are also clearly involved, and many species might rely more on chemoreception. We aimed to examine whether colour pattern or odours, or both, are used in sex recognition and which cues elicit courtship of females by males of the lizard Podarcis hispanica . We experimentally manipulated the coloration and odour of female P. hispanica , thereby creating groups with all combinations between coloration and odour of males and females. Using data from staged encounters, we compared the responses of resident males to manipulated and unmanipulated individuals (males and females). Responding males reacted significantly more aggressively to female intruders with male odours, independently of their coloration. Nevertheless, coloration seemed to be important in long-distance sex recognition since, in the first minutes, females painted as females received a lower number of aggressive responses. Both colour and odour were important in eliciting male courtship. However, females painted as females and with female odours were preferentially courted. Comparisons with unmanipulated male and female intruders agreed with these expectations. Therefore, at close range, odoriferous cues seem to be more important than colour patterns in sex recognition, but female coloration is also useful at long range to deter the aggressive response of males and to elicit courtship in conjunction with odours.  相似文献

The effects of food deprivation, age, and mating status on the responses of three fruit fly species, Ceratitis cosyra (Walker), Ceratitits fasciventris (Bezzi), and Ceratitits capitata (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Tephritidae) to natural and artificial sugar and protein food sources were investigated. Natural food sources included guava [Psidium guajava L. (Myrtaceae)] juice (a common host fruit for all three fruit fly species) and bird faeces (farm chicken). Artificial food sources included molasses (obtained from a local sugar factory) and a locally produced protein bait (the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology yeast). In all species studied, sugar deprivation of immature (1–2‐day‐old) male and female flies increased their response to food odours, although it did not change their preference for the type of odour (protein or sugar). Protein deprivation of mature (14–17‐day‐old) male and female flies also increased their response to food odours compared to protein‐fed flies. Protein‐deprived females were highly attracted to odours from protein sources in particular. Odours from natural food sources, guava juice, and chicken faeces, were more attractive to food‐deprived flies than were odours from artificial sugar and protein sources. Attraction to food odours increased significantly with increasing age for protein‐deprived females of all species. For males and females of all species, nutritional state was a more important factor than mating status in influencing responses of flies to food odours. Practical implications of these findings are discussed in terms of strategies for fruit fly control using food baits.  相似文献

个体辨别对于减少同种争斗以及配偶选择具有重要意义。我们用棉棒粘取鳄蜥(Shinisaurus crocodilurus)尿液作为气味源,以香水作为对照,测定鳄蜥对熟悉个体气味、陌生个体气味以及香水的舔舌次数和舔舌潜伏期,来探讨鳄蜥通过化学信息辨别熟悉和陌生个体的能力。结果显示,不论是雌性还是雄性,对不同个体尿液的舔舌次数均显著高于对香水的,舔舌潜伏期显著短于香水的;尽管雄性对陌生同性个体气味与熟悉同性个体气味的舔舌次数无显著差异,但对前者的舔舌潜伏期显著短于后者;雄性对陌生雌性气味的舔舌次数显著多于熟悉雌性气味的,对前者的舔舌潜伏期显著短于后者;雌性对陌生雄性气味的舔舌潜伏期显著短于对熟悉雄性气味的;雄鳄蜥对陌生雌性气味的舔舌次数显著多于雌鳄蜥对陌生雄性的。结果表明,鳄蜥能辨别同种个体的化学信息,并能通过化学信息来辨别熟悉和陌生个体,推测鳄蜥的这种辨别能力对其领域分配以及繁殖交配有重要作用。  相似文献

The CA2 region of the hippocampus has distinctive properties and inputs and may be linked with the pathology of specific psychiatric and neurological disorders. It is, therefore, important to understand CA2 circuitry and its involvement in the circuitry of the hippocampus. Properties of CA2 basket cells have been reported. However, other classes of CA2 interneurones with cell bodies located in stratum pyramidale remained to be described. In this study, the unusual axonal arbors of a novel subclass of dendrite-preferring CA2 interneurones whose somata are located in the pyramidal cell layer was revealed following intracellular recordings and biocytin labeling. One to four apical dendrites emerged from the soma, branched in stratum radiatum (SR) forming a tuft, but rarely penetrated stratum lacunosum-moleculare (SLM). One or two basal dendrites branched close to the soma, the branches extended through stratum oriens (SO) and often reached the alveus. Unlike CA2 bistratified cells, the axons of these cells arborized almost exclusively in SR with few, if any, branches extending to stratum pyramidale (SP), SO, or SLM. These interneurones again, unlike bistratified cells, were immunonegative for parvalbumin and cholecystokinin. Electrophysiologically, they were similar to some CA2 basket and bistratified cells in that they presented a "sag" in response to hyperpolarizing current injections and displayed spike frequency adaptation. They targeted the apical dendrites of neighboring CA2 pyramidal cells and received inputs from them.  相似文献

The fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster has become a model for olfaction and odour-mediated behaviour. In the wild, Drosophila flies aggregate on decaying fruit where they mate and oviposit and a strategy to find mates would be to locate fruit which has already been colonized by other flies. We therefore developed a bioassay to investigate attraction of males to food and fly odours. We showed that upwind flights are initiated by food odours. At shorter distances, males are attracted by volatiles produced by conspecifics. However, only odours produced by copulating flies attract males. This suggests either a synergistic effect of both male and female odours or changes in pheromone release during mating, that indicate the presence of sexually receptive females. Our findings demonstrate the essential role of food odours and pheromones for mate location in D. melanogaster.  相似文献

In the growing antenna and antennal lobe of the cockroach, Blaberus craniifer (Dictyoptera : Blaberidae), the sizes of the various components, when expressed as a function of developmental stage, follow biphasic exponential kinetics. From first to last nymphal stage, the growth rates are constant. They vary widely with components. In the preimaginal phase, between the last nymphal and adult stages, these rates are generally not maintained, with the exception of deutocerebral cell bodies and some glomeruli. The rate of growth of the antenna decreases, whereas it increases for most glomeruli and antennal lobe.The growth rate of each identified glomerulus is characterized by a specific constant. The growth rate of glomerulus 106, the adult male macroglomerulus, is the same in male and female nymphs. During the preimaginal phase, however, it slightly decreases in the female and greatly increases in the male, resulting in adult dimorphism. The distribution of growth rates in the glomerular population is Gaussian. The slowest and most rapidly growing glomeruli are gathered into 3 spatially separate groups. Only one of them (the group comprising the macroglomerulus), includes both rapid and slow growing glomeruli. Glomerular growth in volume paralles growth of the antenna, allowing estimates of the number of antennal neurons per glomerulus to be determined.  相似文献

The central branchings of the sensory neurons in the noctuid moth ear have been investigated by introducing cobalt chloride through the cut ends of their axons. Three sensory axons stained, corresponding to the two auditory neurons (A cells) and the B neuron. The three axons were identified using physiological criteria. All three cells share the same basic morphology. Their axons divide into anterior and posterior branches, which contain numerous side branches. Their profiles lie ipsilateral, but A1 gives off some fine side branches that cross the midline. The profiles of A1 and B extend throughout all three thoracic ganglia, occupying a ventral, medial position. The branchings of A2 remain within the meso- and metathoracic ganglia occupying a more dorsal and lateral position. We compare our results with those of an earlier anatomical study, and discuss them in relation to described interneurones and to behaviour  相似文献

In parasitoid insects, successful offspring development depends on the female’s ability to find a suitable host. Specific recognition is often based on responses to olfactory cues, but their source and nature have rarely been determined. –This paper deals with the recognition of odours involved in host location by Leptopilina boulardi[Barbotin, Carton & Kelner-Pillault] (Hymenoptera: Eucoilidae), a larval parasitoid of Drosophila species that develops in mature fruits. The nature and origin of volatile stimuli recognized among odours of the host–fruit complex, and the effect of learning on this recognition, were investigated. Oriented responses to these odours were observed in a four-armed olfactometer and were analysed with the observer software (Noldus Information Technology). Fruit odours alone (banana and pear) were not spontaneously attractive to naive parasitoids, whereas naturally-infested bananas were highly attractive. The attraction was related to the odour that adult Drosophila left on the substrate but not to Drosophila oviposition activity or larval development. A synergism between some fruit odours (banana and pear) and the odour left by adult Drosophila on damp filter paper was observed. However, when testing a non-fruit substrate (mushroom), no synergism was observed. Thus, female L. boulardi may innately recognize host–food substrate odours associated with odours from the adult stage of their host. In addition, an oviposition experience on an infested banana allows L. boulardi females to memorise the fruit odour itself through associative learning. The adaptive significance of this process is discussed.  相似文献

Response to odours plays an important role in resource location by natural enemies, particularly by parasitoid wasps. While a considerable research effort has been dedicated to studying the effects of insecticide intoxication on natural enemy search behaviour, it is yet unknown if the odours themselves interfere with distant chemoreception. We investigated this issue using the food-searching behaviour of Microplitis croceipes (Cresson)(Hymenoptera: Braconidae) in laboratory arenas as a model system. Odours of imidacloprid (Genesis®), spinosad (Entrust®), esfenvalerate (Asana®), methamidophos (Monitor®), and vanilla were tested for their ability to interfere with wasp response to the odour of honey. The wasps did not contact the chemicals. Honey odour was generally effective in triggering food-searching behaviour in both honey-fed (and thus conditioned to associate honey odour with food) and unfed, naïve wasps. Mixing honey with imidacloprid and spinosad did not affect wasp responses. The remaining compounds (esfenvalerate, methamidophos, and vanilla) significantly reduced the proportion of positively responding fed wasps, but only methamidophos had such an effect on the unfed wasps. Negative methamidophos effects became completely reversed when wasps were forced to feed on honey in the presence of methamidophos odour. Our results suggest that odours and provision of food may potentially be used to keep beneficial natural enemies away from insecticide-treated areas.  相似文献

Summary Snails were tested in an olfactometer for their orientation to food odours. Measures of odour choice, latency to make a choice and percentage of upwind orientations were obtained after experimental manipulations of dietary experience and hunger motivation. Juvenile snails, given an exclusive diet of a certain food for 12 h or less, oriented preferentially toward the odour of that food when subsequently presented with a choice between it and a novel food odour (Fig. 2). A 48 h period of exposure to a food resulted in a 21 day retention of the odour preference (Fig. 3). There was no evidence for an especially sensitive period for conditioning during the first 50 days of age (Fig. 4); however, adult snails (minimum 1 year old) required longer periods of dietary exposure to establish equivalent food odour memories (Fig. 5). Measures of latency and percentage of upwind orientations confirmed the choice data in demonstrating an effect of dietary experiences on olfactory orientation. Hunger motivation increased the selection for familiar food odours, and reduced the latency (Fig. 6 and Tables 3 and 4). Sensory adaptation appears inadequate to explain the conditioning phenomenon since formation of the preferences was contingent upon ingestion of the foods; exposure to the food odours alone was insufficient (Table 2). The role of pollen odour in resource location by the pollen beetle, Meligethes aeneus (Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae), a pollen-feeding insect regarded as a pest of oilseed rape, Brassica napus L., (Brassicaceae) crops, was investigated in a linear track olfactometer. Both male and female beetles were attracted to the odour of whole oilseed rape flowers, indicating that these insects can locate their host plants using floral odours as cues. The attractive odour of flowers was found to emanate from all floral parts tested: the petals/sepals, the anthers, and from pollen itself. Therefore, at least part of the attractive odour of oilseed rape flowers emanates from pollen. Beetles were more attracted to floral samples containing anthers than those without anthers when these odours were directly compared in a choice-test, and this indicates that there were detectable differences between them. Anthers and pollen may therefore release distinctive odours that are quantitatively and/or qualitatively different from the odour of the rest of the flower. These experiments support the hypothesis that pollen-seeking insects use pollen odour cues to locate this food source.  相似文献
