Monthly (April to November) hydroacoustic surveys and parallel gillnet catches were used to determine vendace Coregonus albula abundance, biomass and population dynamics in a deep oligotrophic lake. By hydroacoustic surveys, recruitment of 0+ year vendace could clearly be detected. In contrast, gillnet catches resulted in low numbers of 0+ year fish, and similarly under-represented proportions of the oldest vendace. Consequently, the correlation between hydroacoustics and gillnets with respect to fish numbers and geometric mean fish total length was high only for the age groups 1 + to 4+ years. Annual variability in hydroacoustic estimates offish abundance and biomass was high (CV=26–29%) which reflects the seasonal population dynamics of vendace.  相似文献

To assess the reliability of depth and density estimates of vertically migrating fish (Coregonus spp.), repeated hydroacoustic surveys were conducted in a stratified lake during the same day, during subsequent nights within a week, and over four months of a year. The reliability of the hydroacoustic method, determined by the coefficient of variance of population depth of fish, was high within nights, but decreased with increasingly longer time scales. Volumetric fish densities were likewise more variable between surveys at longer temporal distances than at short‐term scales. Night‐time population depths of fish were highly correlated to the vertical position of the thermocline. Over the diel cycle, the depth distribution of the coregonids was also correlated to light intensities at the surface. We conclude that single hydroacoustic surveys reliably reflect the depth distribution and volumetric density of the fish populations in a deep lake at temporal scales of up to a week. At longer scales, physical forcing may change the depth distribution of fish, and population dynamics may alter the density estimates substantially (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The diel horizontal migration (DHM) of fish between the inshore and offshore zones of the ?ímov Reservoir (Czech Republic, deep, stratified, meso-eutrophic) was investigated by a combination of horizontal and vertical hydroacoustic surveys at 3-h intervals over 48 h and day/night purse seining in August 2007. An overwhelming majority of fish were aggregated within the epilimnetic layer. Considering only the horizontal surveys, cyclic diel fish movements between inshore and offshore habitats were apparent, while the total fish biomass remained constant between day and night. A higher fish biomass was detected in the offshore zone during daytime by both hydroacoustics and purse seining. In contrast, a higher fish biomass was recorded at night in the inshore zone. Bream Abramis brama, roach Rutilus rutilus, and perch Perca fluviatilis dominated the daytime offshore fish assemblage whereas bleak Alburnus alburnus prevailed at night. Bream and roach decreased in abundance at night while perch completely disappeared from the offshore habitat. The diel differences in size distributions and direct catches suggested the population-wide horizontal offshore migration of bleak and inshore migration of all perch during dusk. On the other hand, partial inshore migration of bream and roach adults was observed during dusk (52 and 80%, respectively). The different proportions of offshore residents among species and size classes suggested that differences in size, and, therefore, predation vulnerability, contributed to the observed migration patterns.  相似文献

Over three consecutive years, we surveyed the temporal variability in genetic structure of sardine populations in the Bay of Biscay and effective population size. Based on individual age, the genetic structure of year classes of the fishes was also surveyed, showing that populations of sardines have weak but significant genetic differences between sampling years and between year classes. We used two different methods to assess effective population size. The methods resulted in different values but a similar range, indicating a low effective population for Sardina pilchardus . Effective population size decreased over the 3 years, probably resulting from an abundance of fish in the Bay. Based on these results, we conclude that temporal variability in the genetic structure of the sardine population and effective size are likely related to environmental conditions in the Bay. Finally, we propose to use effective population size to estimate biomass of sardines in the Bay.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 90 , 591–602.  相似文献

An explicit demonstration of the changes in fish assemblages is required to reveal the influence of damming on fish species. However, information from which to draw general conclusions regarding changes in fish assemblages is insufficient because of the limitations of available approaches. We used a combination of acoustic surveys, gillnet sampling, and geostatistical simulations to document the spatiotemporal variations in the fish assemblages downstream of the Gezhouba Dam, before and after the third impoundment of Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR). To conduct a hydroacoustic identification of individual species, we matched the size distributions of the fishes captured by gillnet with those of the acoustic surveys. An optimum threshold of target strength of ?50 dB re 1 m2 was defined, and acoustic surveys were purposefully extended to the selected fish assemblages (i.e., endemic Coreius species) that was acquired by the size and species selectivity of the gillnet sampling. The relative proportion of fish species in acoustic surveys was allocated based on the composition (%) of the harvest in the gillnet surveys. Geostatistical simulations were likewise used to generate spatial patterns of fish distribution, and to determine the absolute abundance of the selected fish assemblages. We observed both the species composition and the spatial distribution of the selected fish assemblages changed significantly after implementation of new flow regulation in the TGR, wherein an immediate sharp population decline in the Coreius occurred. Our results strongly suggested that the new flow regulation in the TGR impoundment adversely affected downstream fish species, particularly the endemic Coreius species. To determine the factors responsible for the decline, we associated the variation in the fish assemblage patterns with changes in the environment and determined that substrate erosion resulting from trapping practices in the TGR likely played a key role.  相似文献

Bayesian methods for multiple capture-recapture surveys   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2

To estimate the total size of a closed population, a multiple capture-recapture sampling design can be used. This sampling design has been used traditionally to estimate the size of wildlife populations and is becoming more widely used to estimate the size of hard-to-count human populations. This paper presents Bayesian methods for obtaining point and interval estimates from data gathered from capture-recapture surveys. A numerical example involving the estimation of the size of a fish population is given to illustrate the methods.  相似文献

A standard approach to improving the accuracy of reef fish population estimates derived from underwater visual censuses (UVCs) is the application of species-specific correction factors, which assumes that a species’ detectability is constant under all conditions. To test this assumption, we quantified detection rates for invasive Indo-Pacific lionfish (Pterois volitans and P. miles), which are now a primary threat to coral reef conservation throughout the Caribbean. Estimates of lionfish population density and distribution, which are essential for managing the invasion, are currently obtained through standard UVCs. Using two conventional UVC methods, the belt transect and stationary visual census (SVC), we assessed how lionfish detection rates vary with lionfish body size and habitat complexity (measured as rugosity) on invaded continuous and patch reefs off Cape Eleuthera, the Bahamas. Belt transect and SVC surveys performed equally poorly, with both methods failing to detect the presence of lionfish in >50 % of surveys where thorough, lionfish-focussed searches yielded one or more individuals. Conventional methods underestimated lionfish biomass by ~200 %. Crucially, detection rate varied significantly with both lionfish size and reef rugosity, indicating that the application of a single correction factor across habitats and stages of invasion is unlikely to accurately characterize local populations. Applying variable correction factors that account for site-specific lionfish size and rugosity to conventional survey data increased estimates of lionfish biomass, but these remained significantly lower than actual biomass. To increase the accuracy and reliability of estimates of lionfish density and distribution, monitoring programs should use detailed area searches rather than standard visual survey methods. Our study highlights the importance of accounting for sources of spatial and temporal variation in detection to increase the accuracy of survey data from coral reef systems.  相似文献

A number of techniques have been employed to measure biomass of orange roughy in New Zealand. Time series of stratified random trawl surveys in a number of areas over periods of 5–10 years have given relative abundance indices, which have been used in stock reduction analyses to estimate true biomass. This has given confident results for the Chatham Rise stock, and surveys have also shown strong trends in other regions. Acoustic surveys have been carried out on three grounds. They can give relative indices of orange roughy abundance in areas of fiat or medium sloping bottom, and have the potential for estimation of absolute biomass from a single survey. Egg production surveys have been employed on two grounds on the east coast of the North Island, where conditions of tight spawning aggregations and steep bottom topography have limited the success of other methods. Both daily fecundity reduction and annual egg production methods have been used. These have given estimates of true biomass from one-off surveys, although results are imprecise. Both unstandardized and standardized analyses of commercial catch-per-unit-effort data have given relative indices of abundance, which have formed an important part of stock assessment for several fisheries. No single technique used to measure the size of orange roughy stocks has proven ideal or appropriate in all New Zealand situations. All have advantages and disadvantages, depending on the characteristics of the fishing area and fish behaviour. For two areas, a combination of methods have been applied, which has given more confident results than those from a single technique.  相似文献

Brown trout (Salmo trutta) population of a remote high mountain lake (Lake Redó, Pyrenees, 2240 m above sea level) were studied during autumn using hydroacoustic techniques. This acoustic technique was for the first time used on fish at such high altitude in Spain. Sampling using multimesh nets fish catches and echosounding recording were carried out in September 1998. Mean density of fish was estimated to be 1.82 fish per 1000 m3 (597 fish ha–1). The results exhibited mainly a littoral habitat, with the brown trout being preferentially in the 10–25 m deep layer, where the water was warmer and the richness and diversity of macroinvertebrates higher. The sampling by hydroacoustic technique found a length frequency range of fish higher than the multimesh gill nets but both of them estimated similar fish proportion for the common length range. The more frequent target strength (TS) for the population was –38 dB (TS range –37 to –39 dB). Good correlation was found between TS frequency distribution obtained by echosounding and that predicted by means of a model based on the log of the fish total length from multimesh gill nets captures.  相似文献

There is remarkable diversity in brain anatomy among vertebrates and evidence is accumulating that predatory interactions are crucially important for this diversity. To test this hypothesis, we collected female guppies (Poecilia reticulata) from 16 wild populations and related their brain anatomy to several aspects of predation pressure in this ecosystem, such as the biomass of the four major predators of guppies (one prawn and three fish species), and predator diversity (number of predatory fish species in each site). We found that populations from localities with higher prawn biomass had relatively larger telencephalon size as well as larger brains. Optic tectum size was positively associated with one of the fish predator’s biomass and with overall predator diversity. However, both olfactory bulb and hypothalamus size were negatively associated with the biomass of another of the fish predators. Hence, while fish predator occurrence is associated with variation in brain anatomy, prawn occurrence is associated with variation in brain size. Our results suggest that cognitive challenges posed by local differences in predator communities may lead to changes in prey brain anatomy in the wild.  相似文献

Hydroacoustic surveys were performed in an oxbow lake (Lake Laojianghe, China) along the Yangtze River. The study took place during the day and night in October 2012 using the Simrad EY60 split beam echo sounder. A clear day‐night difference in fish densities was observed in selected transect areas. The mean density estimate at night was three times higher than during the day, while at night densities were similar in the two adjacent areas. Significantly positive relationships were found between fish density and average depth for the night and daytime transects, however, the regression slope for the daytime density estimates was much smaller than for the surveys at night. Small fish dominated the acoustic size structure during both day and night, but were more accessible at night. The average biomass estimate from the daytime transects was nearly 60% lower than those from the corresponding night transects. These results indicate that an entire lake estimate of a fish population may be severely biased if fish tend to aggregate temporarily in the bottom or littoral zone or display diurnal behaviour. The conclusion is that acoustic sampling in Lake Laojianghe is best done at night. Diel differences in the lake should be further investigated by carrying out additional day‐night comparison experiments and also by using control catches.  相似文献

1. Sampling of lake fish assemblages is a challenging task in fish science, and the information obtained strongly depends on the choice of sampling gear. The use of more than one sampling technique is generally preferred in order to achieve a comprehensive view on fish assemblage structure. Therefore, the knowledge of whether catches between fishing gears are comparable is crucial. 2. We compared catches in benthic multi‐mesh gillnets with fish biomass estimates obtained by vertical hydroacoustics in 18 European lakes strongly varying in morphometry and trophic status. Separate analyses were conducted for different depth strata and for several fish length thresholds to account for depth‐ and size‐selective gillnet catches. 3. Gillnet catches and hydroacoustically obtained fish biomass estimates were significantly correlated. The strength of correlations was independent of the fish length thresholds applied, but varied across different depth strata of the lakes, with the strongest correlations occurring in the shallow strata. 4. The results support the applicability of vertical hydroacoustics for the quantification of fish biomass in stratified lakes. Survey designs combining hydroacoustics with limited gillnetting at sampling dates shortly one after the other, the latter for the purpose of inventory sampling only, are a cost‐effective strategy for sampling fish assemblages in lakes. However, gillnet sampling does not provide reliable fish density estimates in very deep lakes with separate, pelagic‐dwelling fish assemblages.  相似文献

For field ecologists, detecting a target species in the wild is a severe bottleneck to understanding its distribution and population status. Recently, environmental DNA (eDNA) techniques have been developed as a noninvasive monitoring tool for aquatic organisms. While applications of eDNA techniques for biomass estimation have been proposed, little is known about an applicable size range of the organisms, which might affect relationships between biomass and eDNA concentration. Here, we investigated eDNA from Sakhalin taimen (Parahucho perryi), a giant salmonid species of northern Japan. This species is critically endangered and difficult to detect in the wild by conventional sampling methods. Using quantitative real-time PCR, we tested correlations between eDNA concentration and fish density using fish with a wide range of ages and body sizes in aquarium experiments. We found that our new primers and probe were truly species-specific, and that the eDNA concentration was significantly correlated with fish density and body size (p < 0.001). Furthermore, based on our calculation, the eDNA concentrations were rather constant among aquaria with fish in different age and size groups when their total weight was adjusted. These results suggest that eDNA concentrations can be an indicator of biomass of Sakhalin taimen, although further research is needed for its application in natural environments.  相似文献

The fish stock of a deep temperate, mesotrophic lake was sampled at different depths using a fixed‐frame fry trawl, during two nights in mid‐September 2009. Additionally, horizontal and vertical hydroacoustics were used simultaneously to evaluate fish abundance and biomass estimates obtained by the trawl. Roach Rutilus rutilus and smelt Osmerus eperlanus were the dominant species of young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) fish in the trawl catches from the surface layers (0–9 m). Bleak Alburnus alburnus dominated the catch of older fish in the upper part of the surface profile (0–6 m). Around the thermocline (9–13 m) smelt dominated the catches of both the YOY and older fish. Beneath the thermocline (13–36 m) vendace Coregonus albula dominated the catch of YOY fish, and smelt was the only species of older fish in the trawl catches. Species composition, abundance and biomass of the YOY and older fish were heterogeneous throughout the depth profiles of the lake, but only abundance differed significantly between the layers. The hydroacoustics gave relatively similar estimates of abundance and biomass to those obtained by the trawl in all the depths sampled. Our results indicate that there is a clear separation of small fish of different species along the vertical profile of a deep temperate lake during the night, and an unequal vertical distribution of fish abundance and biomass. The similarity of the trawl and hydroacoustics estimates of abundances and biomass indicated that the trawl sampling did not cause important avoidance reactions of small fish during the night in this deep temperate lake (© 2012 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Ultrasonic telemetry using stationary positioning systems allows several fish to be tracked simultaneously, but systems that are incapable of sampling multiple frequencies simultaneously can record data from only one transmitter (individual) at a time. Tracking several individuals simultaneously thus results in longer intervals between successive position fixes for each fish. This deficiency leads to loss of detail in the tracking data collected, and may be expected to cause loss of accuracy in estimates of the swimming speeds and movement patterns of the fish tracked. Even systems that track fish on multiple frequencies are not capable of continuous tracking due to technical issues. We determined the swimming speed, area occupied, activity rhythm and movement pattern of cod (Gadus morhua) using a stationary single-channel positioning system, and analysed how estimates of these behavioural parameters were affected by the interval between successive position fixes. Single fish were tracked at a time, and position fixes were eliminated at regular intervals in the original data to generate new data sets, as if they had been collected in the course of tracking several fish (2–16). In comparison with the complete set, these data sets gave 30–70% decreases in estimates of swimming speed depending on the number of fish supposedly being tracked. These results were similar for two individuals of different size and activity level, indicating that they can be employed as correction factors to partly compensate for underestimates of swimming speed when several fish are tracked simultaneously. Tracking `several' fish only slightly affected the estimates of area occupied (1–15%). The diurnal activity rhythm was also similar between the data sets, whereas details in search pattern were not seen when several fish were tracked simultaneously.  相似文献

Fish populations in Albasini and Nandoni dams are negatively affected by extensive netting practices. This observation was made by the authors following a number of fish health assessment surveys related to aquatic pollution in the Luvuvhu River catchment. A comparison between the number and size of fish collected over a period of ten years indicated decreases in the average size and a consistent low number of fish, despite similar extensive sampling efforts. Unregulated netting is a common practice in both dams. This may become a serious problem as fish from these two dams are an important source of protein for the local communities. The purpose of this note is to report that gillnets are illegally used in the system and on the effect this could have on the fish population. The authors suggest educational and awareness initiatives to inform local communities about the importance of utilising fish in a sustainable manner to ensure the livelihood of generations to come.  相似文献

Estimating the size of hidden populations is essential to understand the magnitude of social and healthcare needs, risk behaviors, and disease burden. However, due to the hidden nature of these populations, they are difficult to survey, and there are no gold standard size estimation methods. Many different methods and variations exist, and diagnostic tools are needed to help researchers assess method-specific assumptions as well as compare between methods. Further, because many necessary mathematical assumptions are unrealistic for real survey implementation, assessment of how robust methods are to deviations from the stated assumptions is essential. We describe diagnostics and assess the performance of a new population size estimation method, capture–recapture with successive sampling population size estimation (CR-SS-PSE), which we apply to data from 3 years of studies from three cities and three hidden populations in Armenia. CR-SS-PSE relies on data from two sequential respondent-driven sampling surveys and extends the successive sampling population size estimation (SS-PSE) framework by using the number of individuals in the overlap between the two surveys and a model for the successive sampling process to estimate population size. We demonstrate that CR-SS-PSE is more robust to violations of successive sampling assumptions than SS-PSE. Further, we compare the CR-SS-PSE estimates to population size estimations using other common methods, including unique object and service multipliers, wisdom of the crowd, and two-source capture–recapture to illustrate volatility across estimation methods.  相似文献

In the Gulf of Mexico (GOM), fish biomass estimates are necessary for the evaluation of habitat use and function following the mandate for ecosystem-based fisheries management in the recently reauthorized Sustainable Fisheries Act of 2007. Acoustic surveys have emerged as a potential tool to estimate fish biomass in shallow-water estuaries, however, the transformation of acoustic data into an index of fish biomass is not straightforward. In this article, we examine the consequences of equation selection for target strength (TS) to fish length relationships on potential error generation in hydroacoustic fish biomass estimates. We applied structural equation models (SEMs) to evaluate how our choice of an acoustic TS–fish length equation affected our biomass estimates, and how error occurred and propagated during this process. To demonstrate the magnitude of the error when applied to field data, we used SEMs on normally distributed simulated data to better understand the sources of error involved with converting acoustic data to fish biomass. As such, we describe where, and to what magnitude, error propagates when estimating fish biomass. Estimates of fish lengths were affected by measurement errors of TS, and from inexact relationships between fish length and TS. Differences in parameter estimates resulted in significant differences in fish biomass estimates and led to the conclusion that in the absence of known TS–fish length relationships, Love’s (J Acoust Soc Am 46:746–752, 1969) lateral-aspect equation may be an acceptable substitute for an ecosystem-specific TS–fish length relationship. Based upon SEMs applied to simulated data, perhaps the most important, yet most variable, component is the mean volume backscattering strength, which significantly inflated biomass errors in approximately 10% of the cases.
