The purpose of this study was to determine local sweat rate (LSR) and sweat composition during heat acclimation (HA). For ten consecutive days of HA, eight participants cycled in 33 °C and 65% relative humidity at an intensity such that a rectal temperature of 38.5 °C was reached within ~40 min, followed by a 60-min clamp of this rectal temperature (i.e., controlled hyperthermia). Four participants extended HA by a 28-day decay period and five consecutive days of heat re-acclimation (HRA) using controlled hyperthermia. Sweat from the upper arm and upper back was collected three times during each heat exposure session. LSR and sweat sodium, chloride, lactate, and potassium concentrations were determined. Relative to HA day 1, LSR was increased at the final day of HA (day 10) (arm: +58%, P < 0.001; back: +36%, P < 0.05). Concentrations of sodium, chloride, and lactate significantly (P < 0.05) decreased to ~60% at HA day 10 compared to day 1 on the arm and back. Potassium concentration did not significantly differ on HA day 10 compared to day 1 (arm: +11%, P > 0.05; back: +8%, P > 0.05). The induction patterns of the sudomotor adaptations were different. Whilst LSR increased from HA day 8 on the arm and from HA day 7 on the back, sodium and chloride conservation already occurred from HA day 3 on both skin sites. Lastly, the sweat lactate reduction occurred from HA day 6 on the arm and back. Initial evidence is provided that adaptations were partly conserved after decay (28 days) and that a 5-day HRA may be sufficient to restore HA adaptations. In conclusion, ten days of exercise-induced HA using controlled hyperthermia led to increases in LSR and concomitant reductions of sweat sodium, chloride, and lactate concentrations, whilst potassium concentrations remained relatively constant. 相似文献

The response of eccrine sweat glands of the forearms of four females was investigated during acclimation to heat. The sweat rate increased progressively during ten exposures. There was no significant change in the number of active sweat glands. The increased sweat rate could, therefore, be attributed to enhanced secretory activity of individual glands.

The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in the concentrations of D-lactate, L-lactate, pyruvate and methylglyoxal (MG) in body fluids after exercise. Eight untrained male students and five male students who were boat club members engaged in the exercise. Each subject performed runs of short and long duration. Compared to pre-exercise values plasma concentrations of D-lactate, L-lactate and pyruvate increased after running; in trained men by 3.6, 5.0, 3.4 times after short runs and by 1.5, 4.6, 2.0 times after long runs, and in untrained men by 3.0, 12.0, 1.6 times after short runs and 2.5, 5.6, 1.6 times after long runs, respectively. In all cases, the increase of L-lactate was always higher than that of D-lactate after running. The MG contents in red blood cells decreased markedly after running, especially in the untrained students. After short runs the MG concentration had decreased to 13% in the untrained men and 30% in the trained men, and after long runs the concentration had decreased to 41% in the untrained and 60% in the trained men. The MG in plasma and red blood cells appeared to have been utilized during relatively anaerobic exercise, especially by the untrained subjects. The D-lactate and related substances were also determined in urine, but the concentration of these substances showed no relationship to exercise. The D-lactate concentration in sweat samples tripled after short periods of running but the relative concentration to sodium ion concentration was not altered.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS) 相似文献

The effect of manipulating sodium intake upon sweat sodium secretion was investigated during heat acclimation. Twenty-five
male subjects were confined to an environmental chamber at a temperature of 25°C for 3 days, and then acclimated to heat by
a further 5 days at 40°C. The subjects' daily sodium intake was controlled throughout as follows: high (HNa), 348.4 (0.8) mmol · day−1, n = 7; moderate (MNa), 174.1 (0.6) mmol · day−1, n = 9; or low (LNa), 66.3 mmol · day−1, n = 9. Sodium losses were estimated from urinary, faecal and sweat collections using a whole-body washdown method. Plasma aldosterone
concentration was also measured from venous blood sampled each morning. Measurements of body temperature and heart rate during
the heat exposure phase indicated a degree of heat acclimation. During this heat phase there was a reduction (P < 0.01) in sweat sodium secretion for all three conditions which was greatest for the LNa condition, although this finding
was not significant (P < 0.1). In the LNa condition, plasma aldosterone concentration increased (P < 0.05) prior to heat exposure, and the secretion of aldosterone was potentiated (P < 0.01) during the heat exposure in comparison with the MNa condition. In contrast, the HNa diet produced a fall (P < 0.05) in plasma aldosterone concentration prior to heat exposure and an attenuation of aldosterone secretion thereafter.
These findings are inconsistent with the hypothesis that retention of sweat sodium is dependent upon a net body sodium deficit,
but demonstrate that aldosterone secretion is potentiated under such conditions.

Introductionthe aim of this study was to assess the validity of a novel wearable sweat rate monitor against an array of sweat analysis techniques which determine sudomotor function when exercising moderately under heat stress. Construct validity was determined utilising a 5-day short-term heat acclimation (STHA) intervention.MethodsNineteen healthy individuals (age: 41 ± 23 years, body mass: 74.0 ± 12.2 kg, height: 174.9 ± 6.9 cm) [male; n = 15, female; n = 4] completed nine trials over a three-week period, in a controlled chamber set to 35 °C, 50% relative humidity for all sessions. The pre and post-trials were separated by five consecutive controlled hyperthermia HA sessions. Sweat analysis was compared from pre and post-trial, whereby whole body sweat rate (WBSR) was assessed via pre and post nude body mass. Local sweat rate (LSR) was determined via technical absorbent patches (TA) (weighed pre and post) and a novel wearable KuduSmart® (SMART) monitor which was placed on the left arm during the 30-min of exercise. Tegaderm patches, used to measure sweat sodium chloride conductivity (SC), and TA patches were placed on the back, chest and forearm for the 30-min cycling.ResultsSudomotor function significantly adapted via STHA (p < 0.05); demonstrated by a WBSR increase of 24%, LSR increase via the TA method (back: 26%, chest: 45% and arm: 48%) and LSR increase by the SMART monitor (35%). Finally, SC decreased (back: -21%, chest: -25% and arm: -24%, p < 0.05).ConclusionAll sweat techniques were sensitive to sudomotor function adaptation following STHA, reinforcing their validity. The real time data given by the wearable KuduSmart® monitor provides coaches and athletes instant comparable sudomotor function feedback to traditional routinely used sweat analysis techniques. 相似文献

Three adult male patas monkeys (11-15 kg) were heat acclimated by continuous exposure to an ambient temperature of 33 +/- 1 degree C at 13% relative humidity for 9 mo. During the last month, they were also exposed to 45 degrees C at 10% relative humidity for 4 h/day and 5 days/wk. Before and after 3 wk of acclimation, the animals were given a heat-tolerance test in which rectal (Tre) and mean skin (Tsk) temperatures, heart rate, and sweat rate (msw) were monitored during a 90-min exposure to 45 degrees C heat with 24% relative humidity under lenperone (1.0-1.4 mg/kg im) tranquilization. Maximal in vivo msw was also determined in response to subcutaneous injections (1 and 10% solutions) of methacholine (MCh). Before and after 9 wk and 9 mo of acclimation, sweat glands were dissected from biopsy specimens of the lateral calf, cannulated, and stimulated in vitro with MCh. Morphological measurements of isolated tubules were compared with maximal secretory rates produced by MCh stimulation. Three weeks of acclimation 1) reduced Tre and Tsk and increased msw during the heat tolerance test and 2) significantly increased maximal msw in response to MCh stimulation. Acclimation also increased (P less than 0.05) sweat gland size, as measured by tubular length and tubular volume. Maximal in vitro msw produced by MCh stimulation and msw per unit length of secretory coil also increased significantly. We conclude that heat acclimation increases the size of eccrine sweat glands and that these larger glands produce more sweat. They are also more efficient because they produce more sweat per unit length of secretory coil. 相似文献

The effect of humid heat acclimation on thermoregulatory responses to humid and dry exercise-heat stress was studied in six exercise-trained Thoroughbred horses. Horses were heat acclimated by performing moderate-intensity exercise for 21 days in heat and humidity (HH) [34.2-35.7 degrees C; 84-86% relative humidity (RH); wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) index approximately 32 degrees C]. Horses completed exercise tests at 50% of peak O(2) uptake until a pulmonary arterial temperature (T(pa)) of 41.5 degrees C was attained in cool dry (CD) (20-21.5 degrees C; 45-50% RH; WBGT approximately 16 degrees C), hot dry (HD 0) [32-34 degrees C room temperature (RT); 45-55% RH; WBGT approximately 25 degrees C], and HH conditions (HH 0), and during the second hour of HH on days 3, 7, 14, and 21, and in HD on the 18th day (HD 18) of heat acclimation. The ratios of required evaporative capacity to maximal evaporative capacity of the environment (E(req)/E(max)) for CD, HD, and HH were approximately 1.2, 1.6, and 2.5, respectively. Preexercise T(pa) and rectal temperature were approximately 0.5 degrees C lower (P < 0. 05) on days 7, 14, and 21 compared with day 0. With exercise in HH, there was no effect of heat acclimation on the rate of rise in T(pa) (and therefore exercise duration) nor the rate of heat storage. In contrast, exercise duration was longer, rate of rise in T(pa) was significantly slower, and rate of heat storage was decreased on HD 18 compared with HD 0. It was concluded that, during uncompensable heat stress in horses, heat acclimation provided modest heat strain advantages when E(req)/E(max) was approximately 1.6, but at higher E(req)/E(max) no advantages were observed. 相似文献

Plasma aldosterone concentrations were found to be higher in the newborn, presumably prehypertensive, spontaneously hypertensive rat at 5, 10 and 20 days of age compared to age-matched normotensive Wistar-Kyoto (WKY). In addition, plasma aldosterone concentrations were seen to rise in newborn WKY in contrast to findings in Wistar rats and other mammalian species. 相似文献

Plasma beta-endorphin, Met-enkephalin and Peptide F immunoreactivity (ir) were measured at rest and following exercise on three days (days 1, 4, 8) of an eight day heat acclimation regime. Fourteen male subjects demonstrated physiological heat acclimation adaptations. Our data demonstrated a differential response of peripheral plasma levels of endogenous opioid peptides (EOP) to exercise in the heat. In addition, EOP did not follow the same time-course of other physiological adaptations as no differences (day 1 vs. 4 vs. 8) in resting or exercise levels were observed over the eight day heat acclimation regime. Significant increases in beta-endorphin ir (pre- to post-exercise) appear to reflect concomitant exercise-heat related changes. The increased peripheral levels of beta-endorphin were correlated to plasma levels of cortisol. Heat and exercise stress may result in a reduction of Met-enkephalin ir observed in peripheral plasma and might be due to degradation or a decrease in processing from the larger precursors. The differential responses of EOP suggest the possibility of separate physiological roles for these peptides during exercise in the heat but peripheral plasma levels of EOP do not appear to reflect acute heat acclimation changes. 相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that local sweat rates would not display a systematic postadaptation redistribution toward the limbs after humid heat acclimation. Eleven nonadapted males were acclimated over 3 wk (16 exposures), cycling 90 min/day, 6 days/wk (40 degrees C, 60% relative humidity), using the controlled-hyperthermia acclimation technique, in which work rate was modified to achieve and maintain a target core temperature (38.5 degrees C). Local sudomotor adaptation (forehead, chest, scapula, forearm, thigh) and onset thresholds were studied during constant work intensity heat stress tests (39.8 degrees C, 59.2% relative humidity) conducted on days 1, 8, and 22 of acclimation. The mean body temperature (Tb) at which sweating commenced (threshold) was reduced on days 8 and 22 (P < 0.05), and these displacements paralleled the resting thermoneutral Tb shift, such that the Tb change to elicit sweating remained constant from days 1 to 22. Whole body sweat rate increased significantly from 0.87 +/- 0.06 l/h on day 1 to 1.09 +/- 0.08 and 1.16 +/- 0.11 l/h on days 8 and 22, respectively. However, not all skin regions exhibited equivalent relative sweat rate elevations from day 1 to day 22. The relative increase in forearm sweat rate (117 +/- 31%) exceeded that at the forehead (47 +/- 18%; P < 0.05) and thigh (42 +/- 16%; P < 0.05), while the chest sweat rate elevation (106 +/- 29%) also exceeded the thigh (P < 0.05). Two unique postacclimation observations arose from this project. First, reduced sweat thresholds appeared to be primarily related to a lower resting Tb, and more dependent on Tb change. Second, our data did not support the hypothesis of a generalized and preferential trunk-to-limb sweat redistribution after heat acclimation. 相似文献

The effect of 90-min heat exposure (46 degrees C, 35 mbar) on plasma aldosterone (PA) patterns was studied and the respective roles of plasma renin activity (PRA), adrenocorticotropin (ACTH), Na+ and K+ concentrations in the control of PA response were in investigated in eight subjects on a low sodium diet and in five subjects on a high sodium diet. In all subjects, transitory PA increases of varying importance were observed, which were not related to sweat losses (less than 1% bodyweight) or to rectal temperature rise. In sodium-repleted subjects, basal PA and PRA levels as well as heat-induced rises were low (mean PA peak level = 12.62 +/- 1.15 ng/100 ml). They were enhanced by sodium depletion and PA reached a mean peak level of 34.07 +/- 2.73 ng/100 ml. But, in both conditions, the heat-induced PA peaks were 3-times higher than the initial levels. PA correlated with PRA in all but one of the sodium-repleted subjects and in 6 of the 8 sodium-depleted subjects. ACTH release, as measured by plasma cortisol (PC) levels, occurred in those subjects who noted an increased feeling of annoyance and discomfort. Thus, PA correlated positively with PC in 4 sodium-depleted subjects. A high sodium intake improved heat-tolerance. Plasma K+ and Na+ concentrations were not significantly modified by exposure to heat. PA increases can occur without concomitant changes in PRA, PC, K+ or Na+, which suggests that an additional factor may play a role in aldosterone regulation during acute heat exposure. 相似文献

The influence of heat acclimation on skeletal muscle metabolism during submaximal exercise was studied in 13 healthy men. The subjects performed 30 min of cycle exercise (70% of individual maximal O2 uptake) in a cool [21 degrees C, 30% relative humidity (rh)] and a hot (49 degrees C, 20% rh) environment before and again after they were heat acclimated. Aerobic metabolic rate was lower (0.1 l X min-1; P less than 0.01) during exercise in the heat compared with the cool both before and after heat acclimation. Muscle and plasma lactate accumulation with exercise was greater (P less than 0.01) in the hot relative to the cool environment both before and after acclimation. Acclimation lowered (P less than 0.01) aerobic metabolic rate as well as muscle and plasma lactate accumulation in both environments. The amount of muscle glycogen utilized during exercise in the hot environment did not differ from that in the cool either before or after acclimation. These findings indicate that accumulation of muscle lactate is increased and aerobic metabolic rate is decreased during exercise in the heat before and after heat acclimation; increased muscle glycogen utilization does not account for the increased muscle lactate accumulation during exercise under extreme heat stress; and heat acclimation lowers the aerobic metabolic rate and muscle and blood lactate accumulation during exercise in a cool as well as a hot environment. 相似文献
