Both interspecific and intraspecific inter-lagoon differences, between the central Mediterranean coastal lakes of Fogliano and Caprolace, in the trophic patterns of the examined species Diplodus annularis, Diplodus puntazza, Diplodus sargus, Lithognathus mormyrus and Sparus aurata were revealed by means of correspondence analysis. The most evident inter-lagoon qualitative and quantitative diet changes were observed in S. aurata . Feeding similarities among species were synthesized for each lake by means of multidimensional scaling. Trophic interrelationships among sparid fish were different in the two lagoons, as a direct consequence of diet variations in each species. Such differences are interpreted as possibly reflecting differences in the overall structure of the benthic communities. Different feeding models could be identified, each corresponding to a peculiar adaptive strategy for the consumption of lagoon benthic resources. The use of benthophagous fish feeding habits as a tool for the monitoring of the structure and the dynamics of coastal lagoon communities is discussed.  相似文献

Samples were taken in fine-sand community of the North Latium coast in February and September for two years. Eigthy-eight species of Polychaetes were identified. The most abundant was Owenia fusiformis which was highly correlated to the clay fraction in the sediments. Species richness and abundance of other polychaete species were related to the abundance of this tubicolous species which provides a spatial refuge from predators and implements sediment stability. There was a persistency in the community structure in spite of seasonal fluctuations in the abundance of dominant species.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to test the performance of rapid biodiversity assessment techniques in the lagoonal environment at the pan-Mediterranean scale. The multivariate techniques can produce patterns of lagoonal biodiversity along the Mediterranean. Additionally, it is shown that the polychaete inventory can preferably be used rather than the aggregation of information at the family level for the purposes of rapid biodiversity assessment. These techniques, however, appear to be weak for the environmental assessment because they cannot detect differences between the naturally disturbed and the anthropogenically impacted lagoons. Both taxonomic distinctness indices are found to be robust in providing meaningful results for rapid biodiversity/environmental assessment when the crustacean inventory and the polychaete and molluscan ones are used for the estimation of the average taxonomic distinctness and of the variation in taxonomic distinctness values, correspondingly. Conversely, information on the distribution of the macrofaunal species to the Mediterranean lagoons appears to be inadequate for the needs of such rapid biodiversity assessment at a regional scale. It is suggested that information on ecological convergence of the macrofaunal species would probably provide biodiversity indices with additional power, at least in the lagoonal environment.  相似文献

Temporal trends in macrobenthic communities of the Valli di Comacchio, the largest lagoonal ecosystem in the Po River deltaic area, were examined at four sampling sites located along a putative stress gradient and characterized by different levels of disturbance. Trends of parameters characterizing macrobenthic community structure were analyzed using data collected quarterly from 1996 to 2002. The positive slopes in trends of proportion of abundance of opportunistic species observed at all the four study sites indicated the persistence of stressful conditions. Conversely, temporal trends of species richness and diversity showed a positive slope at three out of four sites, thus indicating an increase of community structural complexity. It is suggested that the increase in abundance of detritivorous opportunistic species, as well as the increase in diversity and species richness, is probably driven by the frequency of physical disturbance that resets the ‘successional clock’ of the benthic communities of the Valli. Redundancy was assessed through multivariate analyses and a ‘forward selection backward elimination’ algorithm. At the ecosystem level (i.e., merging counts from the four sites), two response units (a response unit is the smallest subset of species for which the Spearman rank correlation with sample similarities for the full species set exceeds a predetermined value) were obtained. Each of the response units encompassed quite a large taxonomic and functional spread, since all guilds were well represented. Conversely, at the local level, only one response unit was obtained. Species number and function is essential to long-term maintenance of community and ecosystem processes over a complete cycle of common disturbance events. Since redundancy reflects the resistance to change of community functioning, we hypothesize that the macrobenthic communities of the Valli di Comacchio are quite resistant to environmental changes, despite disturbances that generate fluctuations in species abundance and complement at the local level.  相似文献

One adult female bluespotted cornetfish Fistularia commersonii was captured near the coast of Arbatax (Sardinia, Italy) in late October 2005. Macroscopic and microscopic analysis of the gonad revealed a postspawning ovary. Several body parts of the damselfish Chromis chromis were found in its stomach contents. Different developmental stages of 58 metazoan parasites belonging to Arthropoda, Nematoda and Platyhelminthes were detected in its mouth and digestive tract. The lepocreadiid Allolepidapedon fistulariae was reported for the first time from the Mediterranean and, with the exception of this species, all the parasites found were reported for the first time in this host. This new record of F. commersonii may confirm the rapid range expansion of this Lessepsian migrant in the western Mediterranean Sea, as well as the presence of its endoparasite A. fistulariae .  相似文献

The Cabras lagoon is a large and shallow transitional system which periodically suffers from dystrophic events leading to massive losses of its biological resources. Excessive organic matter (OM) and sulphur compounds in sediments are often claimed to be major environmental co-factors triggering these events. However, still limited information is available on their relationships with benthic macrofaunal communities in coastal lagoons. In order to assess these relationships, we conducted monthly field investigations between 2001 and 2002, at three regularly-spaced stations set between the inlet and the mouth of the Cabras lagoon. Results showed reduced conditions of sediments, worsening during the warm season. This was consistent with very high OM contents, up to >‰20%, with annual means of 14–16%. Organic pollution-tolerant taxa, such as Tubificidae nc, Neanthes succinea and Polydora ciliata, dominated poor macrofaunal communities. Results of multivariate analysis indicated significant differences in both environmental variables and macrofaunal community structure and species composition between stations and through different periods. This study documented for the first time in a coastal lagoon that inorganic reduced sulphur pools (acid volatile sulphide and chromium reduced sulphur) of sediments are leading (‚best-matching’) environmental factors influencing the spatial and temporal distribution of macrofaunal abundance and biomass. We conclude that impoverished macrofaunal communities in the Cabras lagoon may show a slight recovery during winter–spring, but tend to regress to an early stage of faunal succession in late summer. We suggest that the combination of excessive amounts of sedimentary organic matter and high temperatures tends to lead to anoxic conditions especially in relatively deeper and more saline waters. These events may concur to periodic increase of production rates of toxic hydrogen sulphide in sediments, which rapidly diffuses to the water column with deleterious effects both on the benthic and pelagic components of the lagoon ecosystem.  相似文献

Potential nitrogen limitation to chl a production in surface waters of Saronicos Gulf, Aegean Sea was assayed using the alga Pavlova lutheri as the test organism. The oligotrophic and eutrophic water types of this area were compared by in situ and in vitro chl a production estimations. Additions of ammonium alone as well as in combination with complete nutrient enrichment were made to the oligotrophic waters and the algal growth yield was determined and compared with the corresponding yield in unenriched water cultures. The results from routine nutrient analysis and bioassay experimentation support the view that nitrogen has a priority among the factors limiting phytoplankton growth in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea.  相似文献

The higher taxonomic structure of a meiofaunal community was investigated in an Eastern Mediterranean lagoon (Gialova lagoon, Ionian Sea). Seven stations were sampled on a seasonal basis during 1995–1996. Stations within the lagoon were found to support a maximum of 14 meiofaunal taxa with densities ranging from 17 to over 2000 individuals per 10 cm2. Nematodes were not always the most abundant taxa, although they dominated about half of the total 28 samples. Uni- and multivariate analyses were employed to study the community structure. The distribution pattern of the meiofaunal community varied both across the lagoon and over the seasons. On the basis of the spatial differences a meiofaunal coenocline, correlated with the degree of isolation, was observed, composed of mainly two zones: one defined by the area close to the marine channel and the other the more isolated area in the inner lagoon. Meiofaunal distribution pattern was not clearly correlated to one environmental variable, but rather to many, and spatial and seasonal effects could be seen. The species composition and assemblage structure of the ichthyoplankton from the Mar Menor Lagoon in south‐east Spain are given. The fish larvae were sorted from zooplankton samples collected at 20 stations with a plankton net (50 cm mouth diameter and 500 μm mesh) during 36 surveys between February and December 1997. A total of 39 575 fish larvae representing 14 families, 22 genera and 36 species were identified. Gobiidae was the most dominant family (77·0%) followed by Blenniidae (19·4%) and Atherinidae (1·3%). The most abundant species were Gobius niger and Gobius paganellus , which accounted for 42·7 and 19·3% of the total respectively. These species were followed in order of relative abundance by Pomatoschistus marmoratus (13·9%), Parablennius pilicornis (9·4%), Lipophrys pavo (7·7%), Atherina boyeri (1·3%) and Parablennius tentacularis (1·3%). The high species diversity (2·0–2·8 bits individual−1 for the annual diversity spectra at each sampling station) reflected a diverse assemblage of species. The main commercial species in the lagoon (Sparidae and Mugilidae) were poorly represented among the ichthyoplankton and they probably enter the lagoon on the bottom as recruits. Chlorophyll a concentration in the water column was the main factor explaining the seasonal variation in larval abundance. Spatial distribution of larvae was related to hydrographical circulation patterns in the lagoon and the movement of marine‐spawned larvae through the channels connecting the lagoon with the Mediterranean Sea.  相似文献

The organisation of the coastal rocky fish community of Lebanon was investigated for the first time, using visual censuses. A total of 62 fish species were recorded between the surface and 32 m depth, 8 species being Red Sea migrants. Species richness and fish abundance were positively correlated first with substrate complexity and second with depth. The trophic structure of the community was dominated by diurnal zooplanktivores (Chromis chromis, Oblada melanura and Spicara smaris) and mesocarnivores 1 (Coris julis and Thalassoma pavo), and did not vary significantly with depth. The Lessepsian migrants represented 13% of the species richness and 19% of the total abundance of individuals. They dominated among herbivores, nocturnal zooplanktivores and macrocarnivores. The Lessepsian Siganus luridus and S. rivulatus (Siganidae), Pempheris vanicolensis (Pempheridae) and Sargocentron rubrum (Holocentridae) were now among the most common fish species on the Lebanese rocky coast. Lessepsian fish species displayed either similar ecological niches in the Red Sea and in the Levantine basin (P. vanicolensis, S. rubrum) or an enlargement of their depth distribution towards deeper waters in their new environment (S. luridus, S. rivulatus). This study will serve as a baseline for future studies as eastern Mediterranean communities are subjected to a steady increase in Red Sea migrant species.  相似文献

Many papers dealing with nonindigenous species in the Black Sea do not mention the polychaete Polydora limicola Annenkova, a new invader in the Pontic-Azov Basin. In this connection, we will analyze here the taxonomic status of this species and discuss the history of its introduction and distribution in the northwestern Black Sea and related coastal lagoons. It is shown that P. limicola is now one of the most common species of the benthos in the Black Sea, especially in estuarine areas and coastal lagoons. The naturalization of this species resulted in changes in the structure of some bottom biocenoses of this region.  相似文献

The belemnite fauna is composed mainly of new species. Nine species were recognised, ascribed to five genera, which include Hibolithes semisulcatusMünster, 1830; H. pignattii nov. sp.; Acutibelu0s sp. cf. acuariformisRiegraf, 1981; Belemnopsis neronensis nov. sp., Duvalia matteuccii nov. sp., D. nicosiai nov. sp., D. pallinii nov. sp., D. raymondi nov. sp. and Rhopaloteuthis massimoi nov. sp.; moreover a single specimen is treated in open nomenclature as Belemnopseidae incertae sedis. The stratigraphic and palaeobiogeographic significance of the new fauna is discussed. The taphonomy of the belemnite-rich level is described, with reference to borings found on the belemnite rostra.La fauna a belemniti risulta composta quasi esclusivamente da specie nuove. Abstract

The present distribution of the Black Francolin (Francolinus francolinus) in Cyprus is concentrated in two restricted areas: the Karpasia peninsula in the north-east of the island, where about 200 birds live; and the lowlands of Paphos district in the west of Cyprus, where about 150 birds occur mainly on Akamas peninsula and around the villages of Paphos and Polis. As the decline of the population is correlated with the level of hunting, protection is urgently needed.  相似文献

Species Temporal Turnover (STT) is one of the most familiar metrics to assess changes in assemblage composition as a consequence of climate change. However, STT mixes two components in one metric, changes in assemblage composition caused by a process of species loss or gain (i.e. the nestedness component) and changes in assemblage composition caused by a process of species replacement (i.e. the species replacement component). Drawing on previous studies investigating spatial patterns of beta diversity, we propose measures of STT that allow analysing each component (species replacement vs. nestedness), separately. We also present a mapping strategy to simultaneously visualize changes in species richness and assemblage composition. To illustrate our approach, we used the Mediterranean coastal fish fauna as a case study. Using Bioclimatic Envelope Models (BEMs) we first projected the potential future climatic niches of 288 coastal Mediterranean fish species based on a global warming scenario. We then aggregated geographically the species‐level projections to analyse the projected changes in species richness and composition. Our results show that projected changes in assemblage composition are caused by different processes (species replacement vs. nestedness) in several areas of the Mediterranean Sea. In addition, our mapping strategy highlights that the coastal fish fauna in several regions of the Mediterranean Sea could experience a ‘cul‐de‐sac’ effect if exposed to climate warming. Overall, the joint exploration of changes in species richness and composition coupled with the distinction between species replacement and nestedness bears important information for understanding the nature of climate change impacts on biodiversity. These methodological advances should help decision‐makers in prioritizing action in the areas facing the greatest vulnerability to climate.  相似文献

A major problem of the Mediterranean coastal lagoons is an excessive input of nutrients (i.e. N and P), causing eutrophic conditions in summer. The sediments of these lagoons can serve as a reservoir by fixing phosphate, or as a source when this phosphate is released under certain conditions. Knowledge of nutrient sources and fluxes is needed if coastal lagoons are to be protected against eutrophication. Therefore, we have evaluated the total pool of phosphate in the lagoon sediments, and the quantity of phosphate which may be released.Sediment profiles have been analysed at two stations of the Lagune de Thau both in and outside the oyster-bank zone. A sequential fractionation, using chelating agents was performed to extract the inorganic (iron and calcium bound phosphate) and the organic phosphate fractions. A statistical analysis of the data set has revealed several significant factors which explain the fluctuations of the concentrations of each phosphate fraction. These factors are: the time of year (seasons), the depth (5 cm layers of sediment), and the site (station).A spatial and a temporal variation of the concentration of Tot-P was found. The largest variation between the two different zones appeared only in the first five cm of sediment. There is only a slight seasonal variation in the amount of phosphate at other depths at the two different zones. Season and station are the factors which control the variations in distribution of phosphate fractions. The spatial and temporal variations of the iron and calcium bound phosphate are explained by the redox potential and pH in the top layer of the sediment.Abbreviations In principle the general abbreviations are used (see page vi).
