Information was obtained from 104 of 106 surviving women medical graduates of the University of Western Ontario in a study designed to determine subsequent working careers and related factors. Of those who had graduated six or more years before this study 85% were engaged in medical work (66% full-time and 19% part-time). General practice, psychiatry and preventive medicine were the leading categories of work. Childbearing was the most important determinant of occupational status. Fewer of the women who had borne children were currently engaged in medical work than were either single or childless married women. The apparent contribution of other factors to working status arose from their correlation with child-bearing. Comparison with other studies suggests that the percentage of female graduates doing medical work is substantially higher than in Britain and about the same as in the United States.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE--To determine the causes of stress in women doctors and relate these to levels of depression. DESIGN--Questionnaire study. SUBJECTS--Of 92 women doctors who had graduated from the universities of Leeds, Manchester, and Sheffield in 1986 and had been working as junior house officers for eight months 70 (76%) returned completed questionnaires. MAIN RESULTS--Mean score on the general health questionnaire was 13.79 (SD 5.20) and on the symptom checklist for depression was 1.43 (0.83). The scores of 32 subjects (46%) were above the criterion for clinical depression. Overwork was perceived as creating the most strain, followed by effects on personal life, serious failures of treatment, and talking to distressed relatives. Both stress and depression were related to effects on personal life, overwork, relations with consultants, and making decisions. Sex related sources of stress were conflicts between career and personal life, sexual harassment at work, a lack of female role models, and prejudice from patients. In addition to these, discrimination by senior doctors was related to depression. CONCLUSION--Changes are needed in the career paths of women doctors, and could be implemented.  相似文献

Students who entered their freshman year for the first time in 1958 and in 1959, from all medical schools in Canada, and those entering the four Western schools in 1960 were studied from the time they matriculated until they either graduated or withdrew from medical school. The rate of attrition is about 15% of matriculants each year, with the lowest rate at the University of Western Ontario (1.7%) and the highest at the University of Ottawa (33.6%) over the time period studied. Attrition was classified as academic and non-academic. Significantly higher rates were found in the case of non-academic attrition for women and in the case of academic attrition for Commonwealth students. Significantly higher rates for both types of attrition were found for older students and students who had attended undergraduate colleges different from their medical school colleges. It would appear from available statistics that the factors which combine to produce attrition are the intellectual and personality characteristics of the student, school promotional policies and evaluation methods.  相似文献

Questionnaires were sent to all 2348 doctors who had graduated from medical schools in England, Scotland, and Wales in 1974 asking about their career preferences. Most were in their second preregistration post, and the response rate was 86-1%. The most popular first choice of career was general practice (665 of the responders; 32-9%), followed by medicine (454; 22-5%), surgery (321; 15-9%), and paediatrics (129; 6-4%). Only 507 of the responders (25-1%), however, stated that their preference was "definite". First choices differed widely between men and women graduates and between graduates of different medical schools.  相似文献

This study evaluated the strength of the independent effects of social position (expressed by educational level) and number of childbirths on body mass index (BMI) variation of Polish adult females. The material comprised 2045 pre-menopausal women aged 35-50, who were healthy and occupationally active inhabitants of the city of Wroc?aw, Lower Silesia, Poland. Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed that both educational level (F = 34.7; p = 0.0001) and parity (F = 5.6; p = 0.001) exerted independent significant effects on BMI. The mean BMI of women who had attended basic vocational or trade school at the very most (27.0 kg/m2) was greater than that of women who had completed secondary school education or had graduated from university (25.3 kg/m2). However, it is worthy of note that there were no social differences in BMI values between childless women. Nevertheless, an increasing number of childbirths was essentially related to increasing female BMI in each social group, and this tendency was most marked among women of lower social position. Regardless of educational level, the highest prevalence of obesity (BMI exceeding 30 kg/m2) was found among females with at least three children (15.6%, and 26.4% of women from higher or lower social groups, respectively).  相似文献

Virological investigations were undertaken on nasopharyngeal secretions from 186 children who were admitted to the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, with acute laryngotracheobronchitis between December 1961 and March 1962. Patients who required tracheotomy for relief of respiratory obstruction were excluded from this series. Myxoviruses which were isolated from 47 patients included the following antigenic types: 29 Parainfluenza-1, four Parainfluenza-2, five Parainfluenza-3 and nine Influenza B. The average duration of hospitalization, 3.0 days, was identical for the 47 virus-positive patients and the entire group of 186 patients. Ages of 135 patients were less than three years.Between November 1960 and March 1962, myxoviruses were isolated from 150 of 445 laryngotracheobronchitis patients. The dominant strain, Parainfluenza-1, was isolated from 119 patients who became ill between November 1960 and April 1961, and between October 1961 and March 1962. Parainfluenza-3 virus was isolated irregularly from patients during both cool and warm months. Influenza B and Parainfluenza-2 isolations were made only during 1961-62 winter. Rising antibody levels in paired sera from 20 of 23 Parainfluenza-1 virus excretors and in four patients who yielded Parainfluenza-3 virus confirmed infection with these agents.  相似文献

The presence in the West of women physicians with degrees from regular medical schools spans a period of approximately 130 years. Women''s Medical College of Pennsylvania graduated many of these early women physicians. The first woman medical graduate of a western school was Lucy M. Field Wanzer, who finished in 1876 at the Department of Medicine, University of California in San Francisco. Soon thereafter, schools that would become Stanford University and the Oregon Health Sciences University schools of medicine, as well as the newly founded University of Southern California, were contributing to the pool of women physicians. The University of Michigan Medical School, the first coeducational state medical school, also educated some of the western women physicians, who by 1910 numbered about 155. This regional account of the progress of women physicians as they strove to become an integral part of the profession emphasizes the familiar themes of altruism, ingenuity, and perseverance that characterized their efforts.  相似文献

The career status of 149 graduates of the University of Toronto faculty of medicine who entered in 1958 and graduated in 1962 was determined in 1973. The response rate to the mailed questionnaire was 96.6%. Of the graduates 4.7% were not practising medicine, 2.0% stated that medicine was not their primary gainful activity and 4.1% were untraceable or unknown. Of the 24 women in the class 17 (70.8%) were practising at least 76% of their time and 4 (16.7%) were practising 26 to 75% of their time. General practice or family medicine had been chosen by 39.0% of the class and a specialty by 55.7%; 5.4% were unknown or untraceable. The place of longest residence before entrance to university was a good predictor of ultimate location of practice but not of type of practice.  相似文献

The number of women studying science and engineering at undergraduate and postgraduate levels has increased markedly in recent decades. However females have lower retention rates than males in these fields, and perform worse on average than men in terms of promotion and common research metrics. Two key differences between men and women are the larger role that women play in childcare and house work in most families, and the narrower window for female fertility. Here we explore how these two factors affect research output by applying a common ecological model to research performance, incorporating part‐time work and the duration of career prior to the onset of part‐time work. The model parameterizes the positive feedback between historical research output (i.e. track record) and current output, and the minimum threshold below which research output declines. We use the model to provide insight into how women (and men) can pursue a career in academia while working part‐time and devoting substantial time to their family. The model suggests that researchers entering a tenure track (teaching and research) role part‐time without an established track record in research will spend longer in the early career phase compared to full‐time academics, researchers without teaching commitments, and those who were beyond the early career phase prior to working part‐time. The results explain some of the mechanisms behind the observed difference between male and female performance in common metrics and the higher participation of women in teaching‐focussed roles. Based on this analysis, we provide strategies for researchers (particularly women) who want to devote substantial time to raising their families while still remaining engaged with their profession. We also identify how university leaders can enable part‐time academics to flourish rather than flounder. In particular, we demonstrate that careless application of metrics is likely to further reduce female participation in research, and so reduce the pool of talent available.  相似文献

We prospectively assessed the association of neighborhood socioeconomic status (SES) with 10‐year weight change and with incident obesity among 48,359 women in the Black Women's Health Study (BWHS). Lower neighborhood SES was significantly associated with 10‐year weight gain after adjustment for individual SES and behavioral variables, such as physical activity and caloric intake. Low neighborhood SES was also associated with increased incidence of obesity during 10 years of follow‐up among women of normal weight at baseline (BMI <25 kg/m2). The associations were most evident among BWHS participants who had graduated from college. These prospective data suggest that lower neighborhood SES contributes to overweight and obesity in African‐American women.  相似文献

In autumn 1977 91% of the women who had graduated from United Kingdom medical schools in 1949-51 (early cohort) and 1965 (late cohort) were practising medicine. Over the first 12 years after qualification the late cohort was marginally more active in medicine and had more members in career and training posts than the early cohort. On the survey date 1 October 1977 (26-28 years after qualification) the participation index of the early cohort was 0.73 and of the late cohort (12 years) 0.65. Both cohorts show the bimodal career pattern characteristic of British women''s occupational experience.  相似文献

We estimated the relationship between weight status and earnings among women participating in the Cebu Longitudinal Health and Nutrition Surveys between 1983 and 2002 conducted in Cebu, Philippines. Women working for pay were selected for the analysis. We used fixed effects estimation to account for unobserved time invariant characteristics related to weight. After correcting for potential bias due to unobserved heterogeneity, our results suggest that the earnings of obese or overweight women in Cebu (Philippines) were not less than women of normal weight. The relation between earnings and weight exists only among self-employed women or women working in more than one type of activity. No discrimination was found among women working for wages or per piece rate. In contrast, among self-employed and women working in more than one type of activity we found that underweight women earn less than do those with normal weight.  相似文献

Data from the 1961 and 1971 Censuses in England and Wales were used to estimate the age distribution of women of various parities in 1976. Applying the age-specific incidences of breast cancer for women in England and Wales in 1975 gave the expected number of cases of that disease in 1976 and permitted an estimate of the mean age at diagnosis of breast cancer at each parity. This showed that the highest average age for breast cancer occurred in nulliparous women (65.9 years) and that the lowest age for the disease occurred in women who had borne two children (60.4 years). The figures obtained were similar to those reported in a separate study of women treated in Birmingham. The results of that study, however, may have been due to the age distribution in the population of women by parity, rather than any direct influence of parity on the speed of growth of breast cancer.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine how often Saskatchewan physicians changed career paths during medical training and practice. DESIGN: Population survey (mailed questionnaire). SETTING: Saskatchewan. PARTICIPANTS: All 1077 active members of the Saskatchewan Medical Association were sent a questionnaire; 493 (45.8%) responded. OUTCOME MEASURES: Long-term career goal or plan in next-to-last year of undergraduate medical school, probable choice of career if forced to choose at that time, and number of physicians who changed their field of training or practice at any time since graduation. RESULTS: In all, 57.8% (237/410) of the respondents were currently practising in a field different from that planned in their next-to-last year of medical school, 63.5% (275/436) were not practising in the field they would have chosen if forced to at that time, and 42.9% (211/492) had changed their field of training or practice at some time since graduation. Older physicians, those who graduated outside of Canada and specialists were the most likely to have changed career paths, family physicians, and those who graduated in Saskatchewan were the least likely to have changed. CONCLUSION: The current system of postgraduate training in Canada does not permit career changes of the sort made by most of the practising Saskatchewan physicians in the survey sample. The implications of this new system are as yet unknown but require careful monitoring.  相似文献

This study deals with female industrial night workers. There is little scientific literature on this topic since, until recently, such shift systems have in most countries been restricted to men. The amount of diurnal sleep, as well as complaints about fatigue and poor sleep, were compared in women who were (n = 17) or were not (n = 26) caring for children. The women were engaged at an assembly line, working nights (22:00-06:00) from Monday to Friday. They filled out sleep logs for 10 consecutive weeks and were interviewed about complaints concerned with fatigue and poor sleep. A comparison of the diurnal sleeps taken between consecutive night shifts showed that the average total length of daily sleep, as well as the time of onset of the first sleep, did not differ between the groups; however, workers who had children tended to show, in comparison with their childless colleagues, more sleep episodes per day and a shorter first sleep. The total number of complaints about poor sleep and fatigue did not differ between the groups; nevertheless, workers with children complained more of difficulty in falling asleep, had a greater dissatisfaction with the amount of sleep on weekdays, and tended to show an increasing fatigue as the week progressed. We conclude that there are social pressures in women who care for children that are in addition to those that are a general consequence of night work. These results reinforce a need for the implementation of measures that organise child care, so helping a mother who wishes to work also outside the home.  相似文献

This study examined factors associated with early weaning among Japanese women in comparison with Caucasian women in Hawaii. A mailed survey was sent to all women who delivered an infant in Hawaii between January 1st 1989 and March 31st 1989. Only Japanese (N=228) and Caucasian women (N=439) were included in this study. All Japanese breast-feeding women in the study introduced formula at some point in time. Cox multivariate regression analysis was conducted in two separate models of Japanese and Caucasian women, respectively. Higher maternal age and working part-time among Japanese women, and multiparity, college education, rural island and long-term Hawaii residence among Caucasian women were protective against early weaning. Introduction of formula was strongly associated with early weaning for both groups, the association being stronger for Japanese women. The early practice of partial breast-feeding may play an important role for early weaning among Japanese women in Hawaii.  相似文献

Shift work have been thought to restrict participation in leisure time activities, but the knowledge about physical activity in rotating night shift nurses has been limited so far. We investigated the associations between the rotating night shift work and physical activity using data from a cross-sectional study among nurses and midwives. This study included 354 nurses and midwives (aged 40–60) currently working rotating night shifts and 371 ones working days only. The information on the work characteristics and potential covariates was collected via a personal interview. Weight and height were measured and BMI was calculated. Physical activity was assessed according to the international questionnaire on physical activity – IPAQ, and four domains: leisure time, occupational, transport related and household were analyzed. Women who reported none leisure time activity were defined as recreationally “inactive”. The associations were examined with multiple linear or logistic regression models adjusted for age, season of the year, number of full term births, marital status and BMI. Total and occupational physical activity was significantly higher among nurses working rotating night shifts. However, leisure time activity was significantly affected among rotating night shift nurses and midwives, compared to women working during the days only, with increased odds ratio for recreational “inactivity” (OR?=?1.57, 95% CI: 1.11–2.20). Rotating night shift work among nurses and midwives is associated with higher occupational physical activity but lower leisure time activity. Initiatives supporting exercising among night shift workers are recommended.  相似文献

Recent neurophysiological data suggest that the prefrontal cortex (PFC) may be susceptible to modulation by estrogen. In humans, the PFC mediates a number of cognitive processes that contribute to memory function, particularly working memory. The present study examined whether memory tasks that recruit PFC-dependent information processing might exhibit estrogen sensitivity in women. Performance on several memory tasks, including measures of working memory, was evaluated in three groups of postmenopausal women: (1) women who were tested when taking estrogen only (n = 38, M(age) = 55.1 years), (2) women who were tested when taking estrogen and a progestin concurrently (n = 23, M(age) = 55.9 years), and (3) women who were not taking hormone replacement therapy (n = 35, M(age) = 56.0 years). Estrogen users exhibited significantly better performance on a verbal task and on a spatial task, each with a prominent working memory component, but did not differ from nonusers on control tasks involving simple passive recall. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that estrogen is active within PFC and is capable of influencing functions dependent on this region. The results of this study raise the possibility that estrogen may play a role in maintaining certain frontal lobe functions in women.  相似文献
