This paper consider the effect of age-grouping on the distribution of two variables, namely, height and weight of pre-school children subject to growth. Assuming straight line regression models for the dependence of expected values as well as variances and covariance of height and weight was investigated by Ehrenberg's law-like model. Ehrenberg's law-like relationship between height and weight, Log , was applied to Kuwaiti children under 7 years of age. It was found that the relationship log was a good fit for Kuwaiti boys and girls except for children under 1 year where the results were significantly different from the expected value  相似文献

Series of values for body height of adults ranging from 150 to 190 cm and the corresponding body weights for 9 age groups from 15 to 65 a are interrelated by 5 test functions. Results of nonlinear regressions as gained by minimization of the sums of the squares and absolute values of the deviations are summarized in tables for comparison. The last position in the goodness-of-fit is held by the allometric relation W = alpha L beta preceded by the exponential type W = abL. No considerable gain can be realised by taking the expression W = a exp (b Lp). A big step is reached, however, with the change to the form W = W150 + alpha (L-150) beta reducing the linear deviations to about 1/3 or more. Finally the 3-parameter structure W = W A + alpha (L-150) beta yields even closer approximations. Tables with the results for the last 2 relations are given together with a graph for the best approximation.  相似文献

A number of studies have documented negative long term effects of low birth weight. Yet, not much is known about the dynamics of the process leading to adverse health and educational outcomes in the long run. While previous studies focusing mainly on LBW effects on physical growth and cognitive outcomes have found effects of the same size at both school age and young adulthood, others have found a diminishing negative effect over time. The purpose of this paper was to bring new evidence to this issue by analyzing the medium run effects of low birth weight on child behavioral outcomes as well as physical growth at ages 6 months, 3½, 7½ and 11 years using data from the Danish Longitudinal Survey of Children. Observing the same children at different points in time enabled us to chart the evolution of anthropometric and behavioral deficits among children born with low birth weight and helped understanding the nature and timing of interventions.  相似文献

The present paper demonstrates the ease of use of method I by Preece and Baine ([1978] Ann Hum Biol 5:1-24) in generating smoothed growth curves for both height and weight. Using the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) growth curve data, smoothed curves were developed and compared to those produced using the least-squares-cubic-spline method. Based on the lower sum of squares and better fit of shape as indicated by residual examination, it was concluded that the method I curve fitting procedure by Preece and Baine ([1978] Ann Hum Biol 5:1-24) fit centile growth curves for height and weight in 2-18-year-old male and female children as well as, if not better than, the least-squares-cubic-spline method used in developing the 1979 NCHS growth curves. Further, as this paper demonstrates, smoothed curves can be generated on a desktop computer using readily available software (the SOLVER function within Microsoft EXCEL).  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to validate the self-reported body height and weight of adult Japanese women. The subjects were women, aged 20-42 years, who participated in a survey on eating disorders in women in 1995. Physically measured height and weight data were obtained for 368 (89.8%) of the 469 women who self-reported their height and weight. The report-based heights and weights were compared with the measured values. The correlation coefficients for height and weight were 0.990 and 0.963 (p < 0.0001), respectively. Mean reported height was 0.1 cm shorter and mean reported weight 0.2 kg lighter than the measured values. Shorter women tended to report a taller height than their actual height, and heavier women to report a lower weight than their actual weight. Despite these limitations, the self-reported heights and weights of adult Japanese women were precise and accurate, and their use in epidemiological surveys is considered acceptable.  相似文献

Longitudinal height and weight data from 4649 Dutch twin pairs between birth and 2.5 years of age were analyzed. The data were first summarized into parameters of a polynomial of degree 4 by a mixed-effects procedure. Next, the variation and covariation in the parameters of the growth curve (size at one year of age, growth velocity, deceleration of growth, rate of change in deceleration [i.e., jerk] and rate of change in jerk [i.e., snap]) were decomposed into genetic and nongenetic sources. Additionally, the variation in the estimated size at birth and at 2 years of age interpolated from the polynomial was decomposed into genetic and nongenetic components. Variation in growth was best characterized by a genetic model which included additive genetic, common environmental and specific environmental influences, plus effects of gestational age. The effect of gestational age was largest for size at birth, explaining 39% of the variance. The differences between monozygotic and dizygotic twin correlations were largest for size at 1 and 2 years of age and growth velocity of weight, which suggests that these parameters are more influenced by heritability than size at birth, deceleration and jerk. The percentage of variance explained by additive genetic influences for height at 2 years of age was 52% for females and 58% for males. For weight at 2 years of age, heritability was approximately 58% for both sexes. Variation in snap height for males was also mainly influenced by additive genetic factors, while snap for females was influenced by both additive genetic and common environmental factors. The correlations for the additive genetic and common environmental factors for deceleration and snap are large, indicating that these parameters are almost entirely under control of the same additive genetic and common environmental factors. Female jerk and snap, and also female height at birth and height at 2 years of age, are mostly under control of the same additive genetic factor.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo explore the changes in the body weight and height of Menkes disease (MNK) patients treated with long-term copper–histidine.MethodsA survey involving a retrospective review of medical records or summaries of MNK patients was conducted. Patients were 44 males born after 1994, and their feeding method and genetic analysis of the ATP7A gene were reviewed. We compared the data of body weight and height from birth until 6 years between classical MNK patients and the general population obtained from national data and between patients who received early treatment and patients who received late treatment.ResultsAlthough five patients who received early treatment reached some developmental milestones, the body weight and height did not differ from patients who received late treatment in the mode of oral nutrition, and were lower in comparison to the national data (<3 percentile).ConclusionWe reported changes in the body weight and height of MNK patients who received early and late treatment. Although early treatment with copper–histidine had favorable effects on neurological development, it did not result in improvements in body weight and height. We suggest that the establishment of sufficient nutritional support is necessary along with early parenteral copper treatment to improve whole body condition in MNK patients.  相似文献

We investigated differences in walking (80 m/min) and running (147 m/min) economy [submaximal oxygen consumption (VO(2) (submax))] between adolescent girls (n = 13; age = 13.3 +/- 0.9 yr) and young women (n = 23; age = 21.0 +/- 1.5 yr). Subjects were matched for height (158.7 +/- 2.9 cm) and weight (52.1 +/- 3.0 kg). Anthropometric measures (height, weight, breadths, skinfolds) and preexercise oxygen consumption were obtained on all subjects before submaximal and maximal treadmill exercise. Anthropometric measures were similar between groups, as was maximal oxygen consumption (girls, 47.7 +/- 5.2; women, 47.5 +/- 5.7 ml. kg(-1). min(-1)). VO(2) (submax) was significantly greater (P < 0.0002) in girls compared with women during both walking (16.4 +/- 1.7 vs. 14.4 +/- 1. 1 ml. kg(-1). min(-1)) and running (38.1 +/- 3.7 vs. 33.9 +/- 2.4 ml. kg(-1). min(-1)). Preexercise oxygen consumption (4.4 vs. 3.9 ml. kg(-1). min(-1)) accounted for only a fraction of the differences found in exercise economy. Although heart rate and respiratory frequency were greater in the girls in both walking (118 +/- 11 vs. 104 +/- 12 beats/min and 31 +/- 3 vs. 25 +/- 4 breaths/min, respectively; P < 0.002) and running (180 +/- 15 vs. 163 +/- 17 beats/min and 47 +/- 11 vs. 38 +/- 8 breaths/min; P < 0.005), this did not likely account for a large part of the difference in VO(2) (submax) between groups.  相似文献

Secular changes in growth and maturation have been well documented in various world populations, with secular increase especially noticeable in the developed countries. To assess the trend in both adult size and tempo of growth we compared the data on stature and body weight obtained in 1992-1993 from 1,804 Melbourne school students aged 5 to 17 with historical data collected from white Australians during the last 100 years. We illustrate the age-dependent trend in stature and body weight by means of regression surfaces. These were constructed by fitting local regression models to historical data and by simple plots showing the overall, and per decade, secular increase in both these measures at peripubertal and adult ages. Because of limited information on sample sizes and variability provided by the historical data, statistical comparisons have been performed only between the present 1992-1993 survey and two earlier independent surveys conducted in 1985 and 1970. The results have shown secular increase in adult stature over the last century, with the rate of increase varying between 0.4 and 2.1 cm/decade in males and 0.01 and 1.6 cm/decade in females. While secular increase in stature has significantly slowed down during the last two decades, the increase in body weight is still continuing at a high rate, and this increase is more pronounced in females. The period of strong secular increase, especially in the tempo of growth, coincided both with the shift toward earlier menarche and the improvement of socioeconomic conditions of the Australian population. The need for further studies to identify factors determining the continuing increase in body weight is emphasized, and caution in using the existing national growth standards for stature and weight is recommended.  相似文献

The study included 2300 healthy couples and their healthy newborns delivered vaginally from singleton, normal term (37-42 weeks) pregnancies in Sibenik, Zadar and Split (Croatia). Both fathers and mothers of male newborns were older and had a higher weight than those of female newborns (p < 0.05). Gestational age and birth weight were higher in male than female newborns (p < 0.001). Increasing maternal pregravid weight led to increasing birth weight of both male and female newborns (p < 0.001). Furthermore, increasing maternal height and body mass index resulted in increasing birth weight of male and female newborns (p < 0.001). Thus, the fathers and mothers of male infants were older than those of female infants (p < 0.05), and increasing pre-gravid body weight, body height and body mass index were associated with a higher birth weight in both male and female newborns.  相似文献

Serial data on live weights, height at withers and the weight/height ratio of 263 cows (3 to 9 years old) and 196 heifers (2 to 5 years old) were studied. The animals were of six red and white Holstein-Friesian (HF)/Guzera crosses (1/4, 1/2, 5/8, 3/4, 7/8 and > or = 31/32 HF-expected gene fraction). Separate analyses were performed for cows and heifers using the Proc Mixed of the SAS package. Models included the fixed effects of farm, season, reproductive and lactation status, two-factor interactions, quadratic regressions on age and age x crossbred group interaction, as continuous co-variables and regressions on the HF gene fraction and on breed heterozygosity, plus the animal random effect. Only heifer growth in height and weight/height was linear with age. In all three traits in both categories the individual additive-dominance model explained the variation between crossbred groups. The breed additive difference was not significant (P > 0.05) for cow and heifer live weight and for heifer weight/age ratio. Heterosis was significant for all traits except height of cows. Linear and quadratic regression coefficients for cows, were, respectively, for live weight, 35.20 +/- 5.23 kg/year and -1.54 +/- 0.43 kg/year2, for withers height, 2.49 +/- 0.29 cm/year and -0.15 +/- 0.02 cm/year2 and for weight/height, 0.22 +/- 0.04 kg/cm/year and -0.01 +/- 0.003 kg/cm/year2. Corresponding values for heifers were, for live weight, 153.46 +/- 37.06 kg/year and -15.69 +/- 4.91 kg/year2, while only linear coefficients applied to withers height (1.63 +/- 0.43 cm/year) and weight/height (0.16 +/- 0.03 kg/cm/year).  相似文献
