Soil salinity and alkalinity are common constraints to crop productivity in low rainfall regions of the world. However, the physiological difference of plant response to these two stresses was short of deep investigation. This study has identified a set of differentially expressed proteins of tomato root exploring to NaCl and NaHCO3 stress by iTRAQ (isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation) assay. A total of 313 proteins responsive to NaCl and NaHCO3 were observed. Among these proteins, 70 and 114 proteins were up-regulated by salt and alkali stress, respectively. While down-regulated proteins were 80 in salt treatment and 83 in alkali treatment. Only 39 up-regulated proteins and 30 down-regulated proteins were shared by salt and alkali stresses. The majority of the down-regulated proteins accounted for metabolism and energy conversion, and the up-regulated proteins were involved in signaling or transport. Compared with salt stress, alkali stress down-regulated proteins related with the respiratory metabolism, fatty acid oxidative metabolism and nitrogenous metabolism of tomato roots, and up-regulated protein with the reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging and ion transport. This study provides a novel insight into tomato roots response to salt and alkali stress at a large translation level.  相似文献

The present study investigates the role of salicylic acid (SA) in inducing plant tolerance to salinity. The application of 0.1 mM SA to tomato [Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.] plants via root drenching provided protection against 150 mM or 200 mM NaCl stress. SA treated plants had greater survival and relative shoot growth rate compared to untreated plants when exposed to salt stress. At 200 mM salt, shoot growth rates were approximately 4 times higher in SA treated plants than untreated plants. Application of SA increased photosynthetic rates in salt stressed plants and may have contributed to the enhanced survival. Transpiration rates and stomatal conductance were also significantly higher in SA treated plants under saline stress conditions. SA application reduced electrolyte leakage by 44% in 150 mM NaCl and 32% in 200 mM NaCl, compared to untreated plants, indicating possible protection of integrity of the cellular membrane. Beneficial effects of SA in saline conditions include sustaining the photosynthetic/transpiration activity and consequently growth, and may have contributed to the reduction or total avoidance of necrosis. SA, when used in appropriate concentrations, alleviates salinity stress without compromising the plants ability for growth under a favourable environment.  相似文献

  • In the present work, the influence of inoculation with the symbiotic fungus, Piriformospora indica, on gas exchange, water potential, osmolyte content, Na/K ratio and chlorophyll fluorescence of tomato plants under three salinity levels (0, 50, 100 and 150 mm NaCl) and three time periods (5, 10 and 15 days after exposure to salt) was investigated.
  • Results indicate that P. indica inoculation improved growth parameters of tomato under salinity stress. This symbiotic fungus significantly increased photosynthetic pigment content under salinity, and more proline and glycine betaine accumulated in inoculated roots than in non‐inoculated roots. P. indica further significantly improved K+ content and reduced Na+ level under salinity treatment. After inoculation with the endophytic fungus, leaf physiological parameters, such as water potential, net photosynthesis, stomatal conductance and transpiration, were all higher under the salt concentrations and durations compared with controls without P. indica. With increasing salt level and salt treatment duration, values of F0 and qP increased but Fm, Fv/Fm, F′v/F′m and NPQ declined in the controls, while inoculation with P. indica improved these values.
  • The results indicate that the negative effects of NaCl on tomato plants were alleviated after P. indica inoculation, probably by improving physiological parameters such as water status and photosynthesis.

Abiotic stresses, especially salinity and drought, are major limiting factors for plant growth and crop productivity. In an attempt to develop salt and drought tolerant tomato, a DNA cassette containing tobacco osmotin gene driven by a cauliflower mosaic virus 35S promoter was transferred to tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) via Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. Putative T0 transgenic plants were screened by PCR analysis. The selected transformants were evaluated for salt and drought stress tolerance by physiological analysis at T1 and T2 generations. Integration of the osmotin gene in transgenic T1 plants was verified by Southern blot hybridization. Transgenic expression of the osmotin gene was verified by RT-PCR and northern blotting in T1 plants. T1 progenies from both transformed and untransformed plants were tested for salt and drought tolerance by subjecting them to different levels of NaCl stress and by withholding water supply, respectively. Results from different physiological tests demonstrated enhanced tolerance to salt and drought stresses in transgenic plants harboring the osmotin gene as compared to the wild-type plants. The transgenic lines showed significantly higher relative water content, chlorophyll content, proline content, and leaf expansion than the wild-type plants under stress conditions. The present investigation clearly shows that overexpression of osmotin gene enhances salt and drought stress tolerance in transgenic tomato plants.  相似文献

The growth and ion content of salt sensitive Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. cv. M82 and salt tolerant L. pennellii Correll accession LA716 were examined under both control and stress conditions (150 mM NaCl). L. esculentum grew more vigorously than L. pennellii under optimal conditions, however, L. pennellii was able to maintain its growth better than cultivated tomato when the plants were exposed to salinity. Sodium content of both L. esculentum and L. pennellii increased as a result of NaCl stress. In addition, both species showed reduced potassium and calcium content due to salinity. The physiological traits were also measured in a population of 52 L. pennellii introgression lines grown under both normal and stress conditions. A total of 311 quantitative trait loci (QTL) were identified for the studied traits: plant height, stem diameter, leaf number, leaf and root fresh and dry mass, and sodium, potassium and calcium contents. Some of the loci (124) were identified under both control and stress conditions while 86 QTL were identified only under non-stress conditions and 101 loci were identified only under NaCl stress.  相似文献

We studied the salt stress (100 mM NaCl) effects on the diurnal changes in N metabolism enzymes in tomato seedlings (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. cv. Chibli F1) that were grown under high nitrogen (HN, 5 mM NO(3)(-)) or low nitrogen (LN, 0.1 mM NO(3)(-)). NaCl stress led to a decrease in plant DW production and leaf surface to higher extent in HN than in LN plants. Total leaf chlorophyll (Chl) content was decreased by salinity in HN plants, but unchanged in LN plants. Soluble protein content was decreased by salt in the leaves from HN and LN plants, but increased in the stems-petioles from LN plants. Nitrate reductase (NR, EC 1.6.1.6) showed an activity peak during first part of the light period, but no diurnal changes were observed for the nitrite reductase (NiR, EC 1.7.7.1) activity. Glutamine synthetase (GS, EC 6.3.1.2) and glutamate synthase (Fd-GOGAT, EC 1.4.7.1) activities increased in HN plant leaves during the second part of the light period, probably when enough ammonium is produced by nitrate reduction. NR and NiR activities in the leaves were more decreased by NaCl in LN than in HN plants, whereas the opposite response was obtained for the GS activity. Fd-GOGAT activity was inhibited by NaCl in HN plant leaves, while salinity did not shift the peak of the NR and Fd-GOGAT activities during a diurnal cycle. The induction by NaCl stress occurred for the NR and GS activities in the roots of both HN and LN plants. Glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH, EC 1.4.1.2) activity shifted from the deaminating activity to the aminating activity in all tissues of HN plants. In LN plants, both aminating and deaminating activities were increased by salinity in the leaves and roots. The differences in the sensitivity to NaCl between HN and LN plants are discussed in relation to the N metabolism status brought on by salt stress.  相似文献

Although salt-adaptation seems to be a widespread property of plants, the adaptive response has been rarely differentiated to the tolerance response. We report on the adaptive response of tomato plants to growing under saline conditions following a 15 day pre-treatment with a lower NaCl concentration (half) than that used during the plant growth. After 20 days of salt treatment (100 mM NaCl), the biomass of the adapted plants increased significantly with respect to that of the unadapted plants when the pre-treatment was applied to five leaf seedlings, but not at the two leaf stage. The long-term adaptive response was determined in two tomato genotypes with different tolerance to moderate salt levels. At 70 mM NaCl, the adapted-plants of the more salt-sensitive genotype produced up to 29% more fruit yield than did the unadapted plants. However, no positive effect was observed to long-term in the adapted-plants of the more salt-tolerant genotype, which suggests that the stress level necessary to trigger the adaptive response is related to the tolerance degree of genotype. The physiological response of the plants showing a positive response to the adaptation was also modified to long-term. Thus, K+ concentrations increased in the young leaves of the adapted plants, with respect to unadapted plants, and moreover these differences increased with the salinization period. These results indicate that the changes in growth and physiological responses induced by NaCl pre-treatment at the seedling stage are maintained throughout plant life cycle and this is, therefore, an interesting strategy for increasing the salt tolerance in tomato plants.  相似文献

One strategy to increase the level of drought and salinity tolerance is the transfer of genes codifying different types of proteins functionally related to macromolecules protection, such as group 2 of late embryogenesis abundant (LEA) proteins or dehydrins. The TAS14 dehydrin was isolated and characterized in tomato and its expression was induced by osmotic stress (NaCl and mannitol) and abscisic acid (ABA) [Godoy et al., Plant Mol Biol 1994;26:1921-1934], yet its function in drought and salinity tolerance of tomato remains elusive. In this study, transgenic tomato plants overexpressing tas14 gene under the control of the 35SCaMV promoter were generated to assess the function of tas14 gene in drought and salinity tolerance. The plants overexpressing tas14 gene achieved improved long-term drought and salinity tolerance without affecting plant growth under non-stress conditions. A mechanism of osmotic stress tolerance via osmotic potential reduction and solutes accumulation, such as sugars and K(+) is operating in tas14 overexpressing plants in drought conditions. A similar mechanism of osmotic stress tolerance was observed under salinity. Moreover, the overexpression of tas14 gene increased Na(+) accumulation only in adult leaves, whereas in young leaves, the accumulated solutes were K(+) and sugars, suggesting that plants overexpressing tas14 gene are able to distribute the Na(+) accumulation between young and adult leaves over a prolonged period in stressful conditions. Measurement of ABA showed that the action mechanism of tas14 gene is associated with an earlier and greater accumulation of ABA in leaves during short-term periods. A good feature for the application of this gene in improving drought and salt stress tolerance is the fact that its constitutive expression does not affect plant growth under non-stress conditions, and tolerance induced by overexpression of tas14 gene was observed at the different stress degrees applied to the long term.  相似文献

Soil salinity is one of the most severe factors limiting growth and physiological response in Vigna sinensis plants. Plant salt stress tolerance requires the activation of complex metabolic activities including antioxidative pathways, especially reactive oxygen species and scavenging systems within the cells which can contribute to continued growth under water stress. The present investigation was carried out to study the role of brassinolide in enhancing tolerance of cowpea plants to salt stress (NaCl). Treatment with 0.05?ppm brassinolide as foliar spray mitigated salt stress by inducing enzyme activities responsible for antioxidation, e.g., superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, polyphenol oxidase, and detoxification as well as by elevating contents of ascorbic acid, tocopherol, and glutathione. On the other hand, total soluble proteins decreased with increasing NaCl concentrations in comparison with control plants. However, lipid peroxidation increased with increasing concentrations of NaCl. In addition to, the high concentrations of NaCl (100 and 150?mM) decreased total phenol of cowpea plants as being compared with control plants. SDS-PAGE of protein revealed that NaCl treatments alone or in combination with 0.05?ppm brassinolide were associated with the disappearance of some bands or appearance of unique ones in cowpea plants. Electrophoretic studies of ??-esterase, ??-esterase, polyphenol oxidase, peroxidase, acid phosphatase, and superoxide dismutase isoenzymes showed wide variations in their intensities and densities among all treatments.  相似文献

Organs or plants grown in vitro do not always exhibit the same responses to salinity as the whole plant of same species grown ex vitro. The response to salinity (100 mM NaCl) of seedlings of the wild tomato species Lycopersicon pennellii acc. Atico (Lpa) and of the cultivated tomato L. esculentum cv. M82 (Lem), the former is known as salt tolerant and the second as relatively salt sensitive under ex vitro conditions, was compared under in vitro conditions with three different ventilation regimes. It was found that under salinity shoots of the wild species accumulated the same or even more dry biomass than the control (roots somewhat less) under all ventilation levels. Growth of shoots and roots of the cultivated species was inhibited under the same conditions especially under the high ventilation. Ventilation reduced some abnormalities of leaf development related to hyperhydricity and consequently ventilated leaves exhibited a more compounded structure, increased area, increased resistance to water loss and stomata functioning. Ventilation increased K+, Na+ and Cl accumulation in shoots of both tomato species. This was more pronounced under salinity and in Lpa. This work indicates that differences that characterize whole plants of these species in response to salinity under ex vitro conditions are exhibited also in whole plants grown in vitro under high ventilation. It is suggested that ventilation is needed to evaluate well the response of whole plants to salt stress applied in vitro.  相似文献

Salinity stress is a major abiotic stress that affects plant growth and limits crop production. Roots are the primary site of salinity perception, and salt sensitivity in roots limits the productivity of the entire plant. To better understand salt stress responses in canola, we performed a comparative proteomic analysis of roots from the salt-tolerant genotype Safi-7 and the salt-sensitive genotype Zafar. Plants were exposed to 0, 150, and 300 mM NaCl. Our physiological and morphological observations confirmed that Safi-7 was more salt-tolerant than Zafar. The root proteins were separated by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry was applied to identify proteins regulated in response to salt stress. We identified 36 and 25 protein spots whose abundance was significantly affected by salt stress in roots of plants from the tolerant and susceptible genotype, respectively. Functional classification analysis revealed that the differentially expressed proteins from the tolerant genotype could be assigned to 14 functional categories, while those from the susceptible genotype could be classified into 9 functional categories. The most significant differences concerned proteins involved in glycolysis (Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, Fructose-bisphosphate aldolase, Phosphoglycerate kinase 3), stress (heat shock proteins), Redox regulation (Glutathione S-transferase DHAR1, L-ascorbate peroxidase), energy metabolism (ATP synthase subunit B), and transport (V-type proton ATPase subunit B1) which were increased only in the tolerant line under salt stress. Our results provide the basis for further elucidating the molecular mechanisms of salt-tolerance and will be helpful for breeding salt-tolerant canola cultivars.  相似文献

In Tunisia, like in the other countries of the Mediterranean, tomato is ranked among the important vegetables in the economic sphere. Tunisia ranks as the first consumer of this vegetable in the world. However, tomatoes are exposed to multiple environmental stresses. In particular, salinity is the most stressful limiting factor to productivity. Salt tolerance of the tomato is susceptible to be ameliorated by genetic and physiologic ways. Salicylic acid (SA), a plant phenolic, is now considered as a hormone-like endogenous regulator, and its role in the defense mechanisms against biotic and abiotic stressors has been well documented. So, the aim of this study was to investigate the impact of exogenous application of SA (0.01 mM) on growth, nutritional behavior, and some metabolic parameters (total chlorophyll, soluble sugars, proline, and proteins) of tomato plants cv. Moneymaker exposed to NaCl (100 mM). Our results showed that the application of 0.01 mM SA to tomato plants via root drenching attenuate the depressive effect of salinity on plants. This amelioration results in stimulation of growth and development of plant. Under stress conditions, SA-treated plants exhibited more accumulation of photosynthetic pigments and K(+) contents. Thus, SA induces an increase in soluble sugars in roots and leaves; also, we noted the increase of proteins only in roots. Overall, the adverse effects of salt stress tomato plants were alleviated by the exogenous application of SA at vegetative stage, which upregulated nutrition and the accumulation of some organic solutes and osmoprotectors such sugars, proline, and proteins. So salicylic acid can be greatly used to enhance salt tolerance of tomato plants.  相似文献

With the aim of determining whether grafting could improve salinity tolerance of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.), and what characteristics of the rootstock were required to increase the salt tolerance of the shoot, a commercial tomato hybrid (cv. Jaguar) was grafted onto the roots of several tomato genotypes with different potentials to exclude saline ions. The rootstock effect was assessed by growing plants at different NaCl concentrations (0, 25, 50, and 75 mM NaCl) under greenhouse conditions, and by determining the fruit yield and the leaf physiological changes induced by the rootstock after 60 d and 90 d of salt treatment. The grafting process itself did not affect the fruit yield, as non-grafted plants of cv. Jaguar and those grafted onto their own root showed the same yield over time under non-saline conditions. However, grafting raised fruit yield in Jaguar on most rootstocks, although the positive effect induced by the rootstock was lower at 25 mM NaCl than at 50 and 75 mM NaCl. At these higher levels, the plants grafted onto Radja, Pera and the hybrid VolgogradskijxPera increased their yields by approximately 80%, with respect to the Jaguar plants. The tolerance induced by the rootstock in the shoot was related to ionic rather than osmotic stress caused by salinity, as the differential fruit yield responses among graft combinations were mainly related to the different abilities of rootstocks to regulate the transport of saline ions. This was corroborated by the high negative correlation found between fruit yield and the leaf Na(+) or Cl(-) concentrations in salt-treated plants after 90 d of salt treatment. In conclusion, grafting provides an alternative way to enhance salt tolerance, determined as fruit yield, in the tomato, and evidence is reported that the rootstock is able to reduce ionic stress.  相似文献

Salinity poses a serious threat to yield performance of cultivated rice in South Asian countries. To understand the mechanism of salt-tolerance of the wild halophytic rice, Porteresia coarctata in contrast to the salt-sensitive domesticated rice Oryza sativa, we have compared P. coarctata with the domesticated O. sativa rice varieties under salinity stress with respect to several physiological parameters and changes in leaf protein expression. P. coarctata showed a better growth performance and biomass under salinity stress. Relative water content was conserved in Porteresia during stress and sodium ion accumulation in leaves was comparatively lesser. Scanning electron microscopy revealed presence of two types of salt hairs on two leaf surfaces, each showing a different behaviour under stress. High salt stress for prolonged period also revealed accumulation of extruded NaCl crystals on leaf surface. Changes induced in leaf proteins were studied by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and subsequent quantitative image analysis. Out of more than 700 protein spots reproducibly detected and analyzed, 60% spots showed significant changes under salinity. Many proteins showed steady patterns of up- or downregulation in response to salinity stress. Twenty protein spots were analyzed by MALDI-TOF, leading to identification of 16 proteins involved in osmolyte synthesis, photosystem functioning, RubisCO activation, cell wall synthesis and chaperone functions. We hypothesize that some of these proteins confer a physiological advantage on Porteresia under salinity, and suggest a pattern of salt tolerance strategies operative in salt-marsh grasses. In addition, such proteins may turn out to be potential targets for recombinant cloning and introgression in salt-sensitive plants. The nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) and reduced glutathione (GSH) molecules play important roles in the redox homeostasis of plant cells. Using tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) plants grown with 120 mM NaCl, we studied the redox state of NADPH and GSH as well as ascorbate, nitric oxide (NO) and S-nitrosoglutathione (GSNO) content and the activity of the principal enzymes involved in the metabolism of these molecules in roots. Salinity caused a significant reduction in growth parameters and an increase in oxidative parameters such as lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation. Salinity also led to an overall decrease in the content of these redox molecules and in the enzymatic activities of the main NADPH-generating dehydrogenases, S-nitrosoglutathione reductase and catalase. However, NO content as well as gluthahione reductase and glutathione peroxidase activity increased under salinity stress. These findings indicate that salinity drastically affects redox and NO homeostasis in tomato roots. In our view, these molecules, which show the interaction between ROS and RNS metabolisms, could be excellent parameters for evaluating the physiological conditions of plants under adverse stress conditions.  相似文献

More than 20% of irrigated land has been influenced by salt stress, decreasing crop production. In this research, we investigated the effect of different levels of salinity (0, 50, 100 and 150 mM NaCl) and the efficiency of Piriformospora indica on growth, biochemical traits, antioxidative defense system in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.). NaCl stress reduced chlorophyll content, height and biomass of plants. Higher level of salinity (150 mM) declined the plant height by 22.65%, total dry weight by 56.44% and total chlorophyll by 44.34%, however, P. indica inoculation raised plant height by 43.47%, dry weight by 69.23% and total chlorophyll content by 48.09%. Salinity stress increased H2O2, malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide anion and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) level in leaves and roots tomato seedlings. However, P. indica inoculation reduced H2O2, MDA and superoxide anion and enhanced DPPH compared to non-inoculated plants at all NaCl levels. The total phenol and flavonoids increased with NaCl treatment. On the other hand, the total phenolic and flavonoid increased more in P. indica inoculated plants compared to non-inoculated ones. Moreover, inoculation of P. indica implicated noteworthy improvement of superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), catalase (CAT), dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR), monodehydroascorbate reductase (MDHAR), and glutathione reductase (GR) activity in tomato upon salinity. Notably, colonization with P. indica significantly improved the content of reduced ascorbic acid (AsA), glutathione (GSH) and redox ratio in the tomato plants under salinity resulting in reduced redox state. Our findings confirmed that salinity had negative effect on tomato seedling; however, P. indica inoculation increased tolerance to salinity by improving the content of phenolic compounds, non-enzymatic antioxidants, and increasing the activity of antioxidant enzymes.  相似文献

The salinity stress is one of the most relevant abiotic stresses that affects the agricultural production. The present study was performed to study the improvement of the salt tolerance of tomato plants which is known for their susceptibility to salt stress. The present study aimed to assess to what extent strain Azospirillum brasilense (N040) and Saccharomyces cerevisiae improve the salt tolerance to tomato plants treated with different salt concentration. The inoculant strain A. brasilense (N040) was previously adapted to survive up to 7% NaCl in the basal media. A greenhouse experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of this inoculation on growth parameter such as: plant height, root length, fresh and dry weight, fruits fresh weight, chlorophyll content, proline and total soluble sugar in tomato plants under salt stress condition. The results revealed that co-inoculation of Azospirillum brasilense (N040) and Saccharomyces cerevisiae significantly increased the level of proline (8.63 mg/g FW) and total soluble sugar (120 mg/g FW) of leaves under salinity condition comparing to non-inoculated plants (2.3 mg/g FW and 70 mg/g FW, respectively). Plants co-inoculated with adapted strain of A. brasilense and S. cerevisiae showed the highest significant (p < 0.01) increase in fruit yield (1166.6 g/plant), plant high (115 cm) and roots length (52.6) compared whit un-inoculated control plants (42 g/pant, 43.3 cm and 29.6 cm, respectively). In contrast, Na+ ion content was significantly decreased in the leaves of salt stressed plants treated with the A. brasilense (N040) and S. cerevisiae. Finally, the results showed that dual benefits provided by both A. brasilense (N040) and S. cerevisiae can provide a major way to improve tomato yields in saline soils.  相似文献

Salinization is one of the most important causes of crop productivity reduction in many areas of the world. Mechanisms that control leaf growth and shoot development under the osmotic phase of salinity are still obscure, and opinions differ regarding the Abscisic acid (ABA) role in regulation of biomass allocation under salt stress. ABA concentration in roots and leaves was analyzed in a genotype of processing tomato under two increasing levels of salinity stress for five weeks: 100 mM NaCl (S10) and 150 mM NaCl (S15), to study the effect of ABA changes on leaf gas exchange and dry matter partitioning of this crop under salinity conditions. In S15, salinization decreased dry matter by 78% and induced significant increases of Na+ and Cl in both leaves and roots. Dry matter allocated in different parts of plant was significantly different in salt-stressed treatments, as salinization increased root/shoot ratio 2-fold in S15 and 3-fold in S15 compared to the control. Total leaf water potential (Ψw) decreased from an average value of approximately −1.0 MPa, measured on control plants and S10, to −1.17 MPa in S15. In S15, photosynthesis was reduced by 23% and stomatal conductance decreased by 61%. Moreover, salinity induced ABA accumulation both in tomato leaves and roots of the more stressed treatment (S15), where ABA level was higher in roots than in leaves (550 and 312 ng g−1 fresh weight, respectively). Our results suggest that the dynamics of ABA and ion accumulation in tomato leaves significantly affected both growth and gas exchange-related parameters in tomato. In particular, ABA appeared to be involved in the tomato salinity response and could play an important role in dry matter partitioning between roots and shoots of tomato plants subjected to salt stress.  相似文献

Cakile maritima (family: Brassicaceae) was collected from three provenances belonging to different bioclimatic stages (humid, semi arid and arid) in Tunisia to study their eco‐physiological and biochemical responses to salinity. Seedlings were cultivated on inert sand for 20 days under NaCl treatments (0, 100, 200, 400 mm NaCl). Plant response to salinity was provenance‐ and salt‐dependent. At 100 mm NaCl, growth parameters (leaf biomass, area, number per plant and relative growth rate) were improved in plants from Jerba (originating from arid bioclimatic stage) compared with the control, while growth was reduced in those from Tabarka (from humid area). High salt levels (400 mm NaCl) decreased the plant growth in the three provenances, but plants in Tabarka were the most salt sensitive. The relative salt tolerance of plants from Jerba and Bekalta provenances was associated with low levels of malondialdehyde as well as of electrolyte leakage and endoproteolytic activity. Salt reduced leaf hydration, the decrease in water content being dose‐dependent and more pronounced in Tabarka. Increase in salinity led to significant increase in leaf succulence and decrease in leaf water potential, especially in Jerba plants. The plants from the latter displayed the highest leaf levels of Na+ and Cl?, proline, soluble carbohydrates, soluble proteins, and polyphenols. Overall, the higher salt tolerance of plants from Jerba provenance, and to a lower extent of those from Bekalta, may be partly related to their better capacity for osmotic adjustment and to limit oxidative damage when salt‐challenged.  相似文献
