Summary Plant carbon/nutrient balance has been implicated as an important factor in plant defensive chemistry and palatability to herbivores. We tested this hypothesis by fertilizing juvenile growth form Alaska paper birch and green alder with N, P and N-plus-P in a balanced 2x2 factorial experiment. Additionally, we shaded unfertilized plants of both species. Fertilization with N and N-plus-P increased growth of Alaska paper birch, reduced the concentration of papyriferic acid in internodes and increased the palatability of birch twigs to snowshoe hares. Shading decreased birch growth, decreased the concentration of papyriferic acid in internodes and increased twig palatability. These results indicate that the defensive chemistry and palatability of winter-dormant juvenile Alaska paper birch are sensitive to soil fertility and shade. Conversely the defensive chemistry and palatability of green alder twigs to snowshoe hares were not significantly affected by soil fertility or shade. The greater sensitivity of Alaska paper birch defensive chemistry and palatability to snowshoe hares in comparison to green alder is in agreement with the hypothesis that early successional woody plants that are adapted to high resource availability are more plastic in their chemical responses to the physical environment than are species from less favorable environments.  相似文献

The possible link between cytokinin and flowering was examine in tobacco. The degree of cytokinin autotrophy and the competence for cytokinin habitution were measured in callus derived from pith tissue of Nicotiana tabacum cvs. H425 an W38.Explants were taken from internodes at all positions up the stem in juvenile and mature plants. To test whether the competence of cells to form flowers was linked with crtokinin habituation, thin cell layer explants from comparable internodes were tested for their ability to form floral buds. Callus derived from the upper parts of plants showed cytokinin autotrophy whether or not the plants were flowering. Flower buds were formed only on thin cell layer explants from the upper part of plants which were already flowering. Cytokinin habituation and competence to flower are therefore not directly linked although cytokinin habituation could be a prerequisite for meristematic activity and for flowering. Pith from internodes in the lower half of mature pants formed callus which was cytokinin-dependent, although these same internodes in juvenile plants were cytokinin-autotrophic. The ability to form cytokinin-autotrophic callus was therefore greatest in the meristematic regions and was lost as the pith cells aged. Competence to habituate after 35 °C treatment was also shown by pith callus from a few internodes in the middle of the plant below those already forming cytokinin-autotropic callus.  相似文献

The differentiation of phloem anastomoses linking the longitudinal vascular bundles has been studied in stem internodes of Cucurbita maxima Duchesne, C. pepo L. and Dahlia pinnata Cav. These anastomoses comprise naturally occurring regenerative sieve tubes which redifferentiate from interfascicular parenchyma cells in the young internodes. In all three species, severing a vascular bundle in a young internode resulted in regeneration of xylem to form a curved by-pass immediately around the wound. The numerous phloem anastomoses in these young internodes were not involved in this process, the regenerated vessels originating from interfascicular parenchyma alone. Conversely, in mature internodes of Dahlia, the regenerated vessels originated from initials of the interfascicular cambia, and their phloem anastomoses did not influence the pattern of xylogenesis. On the other hand, in old internodes of Cucurbita, in which an interfascicular cambium was not yet developed, the parenchyma cells between the bundles had lost the ability to redifferentiate into vessel elements, and instead, regenerated vessels were produced in the phloem anastomoses. Thus, the wounded region of the vascular bundle was not bypassed via the shortest, curved pathway, but by more circuitous routes further away from the wound. Some of the regenerated vessels produced in the phloem anastomoses were extremely wide, and presumably efficient conductors of water. It is proposed that the dense network of phloem anastomoses developed during evolution as a mechanism of adaptation to possible damage in mature internodes by providing flexible alternative pathways for efficient xylem regeneration in plants with limited or no interfascicular cambium. This paper is dedicated to the memory of the late Isaac Blachmann (deceased 19 November 1995), father-in-law of the senior author, for encouragement and advice throughout the yearsThis research was supported by an International Scientific Exchange Award to R.A. from the Israel Academy of Sciences and The Royal Society.  相似文献

The formation of the lower nodes and internodes in maize (Zea mays L.) and the progression of their differentiation was investigated by generating clonal sectors from cells of the apical meristem. Marked clones were induced by irradiating dry seeds (kernels) and 2-, 8- and 13-day-old seedlings heterozygous for anthocyanin markers (b, pl) and a chlorophyll factor (wd). The extent and apparent number of cells generating the internodes 2–6, which normally remain condensed, were traced by promoting the elongation of these internodes with gibberellic acid. At the mature seed stage, internodes 2 and 3 are undergoing longitudinal expansion and each is represented by two or three circumferential populations of cells. Internodes 4 and 5 are in the process of radial expansion and each is represented by a single circumferential population of cells. At nodes 2–4, the cells for leaves and internodes have separated but such a separation has not occurred for nodes 5 and 6. The formation and expansion of basal six internodes progressed acropetally, i.e. from the base toward distal nodes. Analysis of sectors induced at the seedling stage shows that the formation of middle and top internodes also progress acropetally. The basal, middle and top internodes were found to develop at different apparent cell numbers in the apical meristem.  相似文献

Owl predation on snowshoe hares: consequences of antipredator behaviour   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
We show evidence of differential predation on snowshoe hares (Lepus americanus) by great horned owls (Bubo virginianus) and ask whether predation mortality is related to antipredator behaviour in prey. We predicted higher predation on (1) young and inexperienced hares, (2) hares in open habitats lacking cover to protect from owl predation, and (3) hares in above average condition assuming that rich food patches are under highest risk of predation. Information on killed hares was obtained at nest sites of owls and by monitoring hares using radio-telemetry. The availability of age classes within the hare population was established from live-trapping and field data on reproduction and survival. Great horned owls preferred juvenile over adult hares. Juveniles were more vulnerable to owl predation before rather than after dispersal, suggesting that displacement or increased mobility were not causes for this increased mortality. Owls killed ratio-collared hares more often in open than in closed forest types, and they avoided or had less hunting success in habitats with dense shrub cover. Also, owls took hares in above average condition, although it is unclear whether samples from early spring are representative for other seasons. In conclusion, these results are consistent with the hypothesis that variation in antipredator behaviours of snowshoe hares leads to differential predation by great horned owls.  相似文献

Snowshoe hares (Lepus americanus) are an ecologically important herbivore because they modify vegetation through browsing and serve as a prey resource for multiple predators. We implemented a multiscale approach to characterize habitat relationships for snowshoe hares across the mixed conifer landscape of the northern Rocky Mountains, USA. Our objectives were to (1) assess the relationship between horizontal cover and snowshoe hares, (2) estimate how forest metrics vary across the gradient of snowshoe hare use and horizontal cover, and (3) model and map snowshoe hare occupancy and intensity of use. Results indicated that both occupancy and intensity of use by snowshoe hares increased with horizontal cover and that the effect became stronger as intensity of use increased. This underscores the importance of dense horizontal cover to achieve high use, and likely density, of snowshoe hares. Forest structure in areas with high snowshoe hare use and horizontal cover was characterized as multistoried with dense canopy cover and medium‐sized trees (e.g., 12.7–24.4 cm). The abundance of lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) was associated with snowshoe hare use within a mixed conifer context, and the only species to increase in abundance with horizontal cover was Engelmann spruce (Picea engelmannii) and subalpine fir (Abies lasiocarpa). Our landscape‐level modeling produced similar patterns in that we observed a positive effect of lodgepole pine and horizontal cover on both occupancy and use by snowshoe hares, but we also observed a positive yet parabolic effect of snow depth on snowshoe hare occupancy. This work is among the first to characterize the multiscale habitat relationships of snowshoe hares across a mixed conifer landscape as well as to map their occupancy and intensity of use. Moreover, our results provide stand‐ and landscape‐level insights that directly relate to management agencies, which aids in conservation efforts of snowshoe hares and their associated predators.  相似文献

Antibodies to phase related proteins in juvenile and mature Prunus avium   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
In the search for biochemical and molecular markers of juvenility in trees proteins have been identified which are preferentially or differentially expressed in either the juvenile or the mature phases of Prunus avium cv. Stella. These fall into two classes: those which are phase-related and those which may be affected by root-shoot distance. N-terminal amino acid sequence data from some of these proteins were used to produce polyclonal antibodies to corresponding synthetic peptides in order to determine if they could be used as markers of phase state in woody plants. Western blot analysis was performed on proteins extracted from three sources; juvenile trees, mature trees and rooted cuttings from mature trees. The results showed that the antibodies recognised differentially-expressed proteins. In particular, one antibody to a juvenile specific protein cross-reacted with a polypeptide of approx. 28 kDa which was present in greater amounts in shoot tips of juvenile P. avium cv. Stella seedlings compared with rooted cuttings of mature plants placed in the same growth environment.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Snowshoe hares (Lepus americanus) are an important prey species for Canada lynx (Lynx canadensis) and are considered critical for lynx population persistence. Determination of snowshoe hare distribution and abundance is needed by land management agencies for lynx conservation. An accepted approach for estimating snowshoe hare abundance is the use of fecal-pellet plot counts. Locally derived regression equations are preferred for accurate calibration of pellet counts to snowshoe hare density due to local differences in pellet deposition and decomposition. We used linear regression to examine correlations between snowshoe hare density, as determined by mark–recapture estimates, and pellet plot counts on both uncleared plots and annually cleared plots on the Bridger-Teton National Forest, western Wyoming, USA. We found significant correlations between snowshoe hare density estimates and fecal pellet counts for both uncleared and annually cleared pellet counts; however, the relationship was stronger (higher r) when using pellet counts from annually cleared plots. In addition, we found that adjusting the buffer size by omitting hard habitat edges (not used by hares) around trapping grids improved correlations between snowshoe hare density and fecal pellet counts for both uncleared plots and annually cleared plots. Though precision is sacrificed when using uncleared plots, they may be useful as a coarse index of habitat use by snowshoe hares. Our derived regression equations may be useful to identify important foraging habitat for Canada lynx in western Wyoming. Land managers responsible for conserving snowshoe hare habitat in western Wyoming may use these equations to monitor changes in hare populations among habitats and during prescribed management actions.  相似文献

Abstract: In 1999 Canada lynx (Lynx canadensis) were reintroduced to the southern Rocky Mountains and in 2000 the species was listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act in the contiguous United States (Colorado Division of Wildlife 2000, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service 2000). To better evaluate the progress of this reintroduction, we conducted field studies to estimate population densities of snowshoe hares (Lepus americanus), the primary prey of lynx in Colorado, USA. We conducted our field studies in southwestern Colorado in winters 2002 and 2003. We estimated population densities in forested stands of mature Engelmann spruce (Picea engelmannii)-subalpine fir (Abies lasiocarpa) and mature lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) using mark-recapture data and 3 methods for estimating effective area trapped: half trap interval, mean maximum distance moved (MMDM), and half MMDM. In Engelmann spruce-subalpine fir, we found density estimates ranged from 0.08 ± 0.03 (SE) hares/ha to 1.32 ± 0.15 hares/ha and in lodgepole pine, density estimates ranged from 0.06 ± 0.01 hares/ha to 0.34 ± 0.06 hares/ha, depending on year and method used for estimating effective area trapped. Our density estimates are similar to those reported at the low phase of the hare cycle in populations to the north (<0.1–1.1 hares/ha), where Canada lynx persist (Hodges 2000a). Although density estimates are a useful comparative tool, they depend upon methods used to estimate effective area trapped. Therefore, we urge caution in comparing our density estimates with those from other areas, which may have used dissimilar methods. We also examined effects of temperature and moon phase on capture success of snowshoe hares; extremely low temperatures affected capture success but moon phase did not. Capture success can be improved by trapping snowshoe hares at temperatures above their lower critical temperature (Tlc). If abundance estimates are derived from mark-recapture studies then effects of temperature should be included when modeling capture probabilities.  相似文献

Marcgravia rectifolia L. is a dimorphic vine having distinct juvenile and adult shoots. The juvenile shoot is a climber characterized by an orthotropic growth habit, a flattened stem, adventitious roots, and ovate leaves. The adult shoot, on the other hand, possesses a plagiotropic growth habit, has a cylindrical stem, few or no adventitious roots, and lanceolate leaves. Both phases have distichous phyllotaxy, however the plastochron is shorter for the adult phase than for the juvenile. Internode elongation occurs earlier for adult shoots than for juvenile shoots. Cytological analyses show the flattened stem of the juvenile results from differential production of cells, especially in the pith region. On the other hand, internodes of the adult phase are longer than juvenile internodes, a result of more cells produced rather than longer cells. In juvenile stems a perivascular band of elongated fibers develops, while in adult stems this band consists of brachyosclereids. Both phases undergo secondary growth and have non-storied cambia. Cambial activity begins in the 6th internode of each phase. As secondary growth proceeds, the adult stem produces much more xylem than juvenile stems of the same age. Adventitious roots produced in the juvenile stem are located in vertical rows at the “corners” of flattened stems and are attachment structures aiding the climbing habit of this vine. Phase changes occur regularly in this species. The juvenile phase usually transforms into the adult, however the adult phase can spontaneously revert back into the juvenile phase. The anatomical features and the phase changes are discussed and compared to Hedera helix, a vine whose phase changes have been studied in some detail. It is suggested that the anatomical features of Marcgravia rectifolia L. including its phase changes, may provide an alternative system to study physiological changes similar to those done with Hedera helix.  相似文献

An improved 13C-density-labeling method was used to study cell wall synthesis in rapidly expanding, slowly expanding and recently mature internodes of Nitella translucens var axillaris (A.Br.) R.D.W. As cells matured, the rate of wall synthesis slowed and the deposition of cellulose microfibrils changed from a predominantly transverse direction in the primary wall of rapidly expanding internodes to a helicoidal array in the secondary wall of mature internodes. The secondary wall was characterized by relatively higher rates of cellulose synthesis and lower rates of pectin synthesis than the primary wall. The synthesis of xyloglucan also decreased markedly at the transition to secondary wall synthesis, while the synthesis of mannose-rich hemicellulose increased. Even though structural differences were striking between the primary and secondary walls of Nitella, compositional differences between the two types of wall were quantitative rather than qualitative. The authors appreciate the assistance of Martin Yousef with the electron microscopy.  相似文献

Abstract: We related winter habitat selection by Canada lynx (Lynx canadensis), relative abundance of snowshoe hares (Lepus americanus), and understory stem densities to evaluate whether lynx select stands with the greatest snowshoe hare densities or the greatest prey accessibility. Lynx (3 F, 3 M) selected tall (4.4-7.3 m) regenerating clear-cuts (11-26 yr postharvest) and established partially harvested stands (11-21 yr postharvest) and selected against short (3.4-4.3 m) regenerating clear-cuts, recent partially harvested stands (1-10 yr), mature second-growth stands (>40 yr), and roads and their edges (30 m on either side of roads). Lynx selected stands that provided intermediate to high hare density and intermediate cover for hares (i.e., prey access) but exhibited lower relative preference for stand types with highest hare densities where coniferous saplings exceeded 14,000 stems/ha.  相似文献

Snowshoe hares (Lepus americanus) are a primary prey species for Canada lynx (Lynx canadensis) in western North America. Lynx management plans require knowledge of potential prey distribution and abundance in the western United States. Whether even-aged regenerating forests or multi-storied forests contain more snowshoe hares is currently unknown. During 2006–2008, we estimated snowshoe hare density in 3 classes of 30–70-year-old lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) and 4 classes of late seral multi-storied forest with a spruce (Picea engelmannii)-fir (Abies lasiocarpa) component in the Bridger-Teton National Forest, Wyoming. We recorded physiographic variables and forest structure characteristics to understand how these factors influence abundance of snowshoe hares. In many instances, snowshoe hares were more abundant in late seral multi-storied forests than regenerating even-aged forests. Forest attributes predicting hare abundance were often more prevalent in multi-storied forests. Late seral multi-storied forests with a spruce–fir component and dense horizontal cover, as well as 30–70-year-old lodgepole pine with high stem density, were disproportionately influential in explaining snowshoe hare densities in western Wyoming. In order to promote improved habitat conditions for snowshoe hares in this region, management agencies should consider shifting their focus towards maintaining, enhancing, and promoting multi-storied forests with dense horizontal cover, as well as developing 30–70-year-old lodgepole pine stands with high stem density that structurally mimic multi-storied forests. © 2012 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

Summary Overwintering mountain hares (Lepus timidus) fed selectively on the shoots of a number of northern willow (Salix spp.) species. The hares preferred certain species over others and mature shoots over juvenile ones. There was a negative correlation between the phenolic glycoside concentration in the twigs and the hares' feeding. This correlation was substantiated by feeding experiments in which oat grains treated with purified phenoglycoside and catechin fractions of willow bark were offered along with untreated control oat grains to free-ranging mountain hares. Both fractions in concentrations normally found in willow twigs inhibited hare feeding. The results suggest that these phenolic compounds play a crucial role in the building up of resistance patterns among the willows. The decline in resistance in mature shoots of tall willows indicates that the juvenile resistance can be, perhaps secondarily, an adaptation against mammals browsing from ground level. Accordingly, low willow species retain a high level of resistance also in maturity.  相似文献

Heterotrophic and autotrophic culture in agar and in polyurethane foam, the latter used as an alternative tissue support to agar, resulted in potato microplants with different in vitro morphologies. The microplants were visually characterised in terms of their relative developmental maturity, by comparing the respective leaf shapes in vitro with ontogenetic differences in leaf shape in glasshouse-grown potato plants. Cytosine methylation in the DNA of microplants of the different morphologies was determined using a method based on the AFLP technique but employing methylation-sensitive restriction enzymes (MSAP analysis) to test the hypothesis that DNA methylation could be used to characterise differences in microplant development in vitro. In three of the four treatments there was a good correlation between the visual assessment of relative morphological maturity and DNA base methylation levels. In these microplants there was increased DNA methylation in the leaves with mature leaf morphology represented by a decreased number of restriction fragments. The fourth in vitro morphology had the most juvenile leaf shape but did not have the predicted level of DNA methylation, having a relatively low number of restriction fragments. Subtraction analysis was used to discriminate the fragments that were unique to the juvenile and mature in vivo leaf morphologies. Comparison of the fragment patterns from the microplants with the latter reference profiles, confirmed the relationship with the total DNA methylation as detected by MSAP analysis, that is, the number of common fragments with the juvenile or mature in vivo leaf profiles, respectively. However, none of the fragment profiles, while sharing some common bands at random, was identical to any other; or to that of either the juvenile or mature in vivo leaf. The anomalous relationship of the microplants with most juvenile leaf shape and highest DNA methylation was confirmed. The measurement of DNA methylation in in vitro plants is discussed in the context of the development of a method to assess the quality of microplants produced by different in vitro protocols.  相似文献

Abstract: In the southern Rocky Mountains, USA, snowshoe hares (Lepus americanus) and mountain cottontails (Sylvilagus nuttallii) are syntopic. Previous researchers used size of fecal pellets to identify leporid species in the Southern Rockies, a common criterion for identifying species of cervids. We measured 655 fecal pellets from 10 mountain cottontails and 2,374 fecal pellets from 23 snowshoe hares. We found no relationship between the body weight of mountain cottontails and the size of their fecal pellets (r = 0.04, F = 0.01, P = 0.91) but found one for snowshoe hares (r = 0.48, F = 9.3, P = 0.005). Although the 2 species differed in the size of their fecal pellets, the difference between means (1.2 mm) was sufficiently small to require measuring individual pellets and is only applicable to individuals of adult size. Although fecal pellet counts may be used to estimate presence and relative abundance of snowshoe hares in the absence of syntopic leporids, where multiple species of leporids are syntopic this method may yield misleading results.  相似文献

Ustilago esculenta is a biotrophic smut fungus that parasitizes Zizania latifolia, an edible aquatic vegetable of the southern China region. Infection results in swelling of the upper parts of the Z. latifolia culm which are called jiaobai and have a unique flavor and delicacy and are popular among Chinese. The infection process of Z. latifolia by U. esculenta was investigated with light and electron microscopy. Distribution of hyphae was uneven in plants; hyphae were mainly present in the swollen upper parts (jiaobai), the nodal regions of mature culms and old rhizomes and buds or shoots. Hyphae were rare in the internodes of mature culms and were fewer in the internodes of old rhizomes. All new buds produced on the nodes of culms and rhizomes were infected by hyphae in November before and in March after overwintering. The hyphae grew into the buds from the parent nodes via intervascular tissues only or via parenchyma tissues and vascular bundles. Hyphae extended within and between the host cells and frequently formed hyphal aggregations or clusters, not only in the mature tissues but also in developing tissues. The typical interface between the fungal hyphal wall and invaginated host plasma membrane comprised a sheath. The sheath surrounding a hyphae comprised an outer electron-opaque matrix and an inner electron-dense layer. The electron-opaque matrix layers were thicker in jiaobai tissues, ranging from 0.28 to 0.85 μm. The electron-dense hyphal coatings were more conspicuous in the young buds or shoots and mature culms than in the jiaobai. The intercellular hyphae caused large cavity formation between the cells or rupture of host cell walls, for gaining entry into host cells. The broken host cell wall fused with the electron-opaque matrix of the hyphal sheath as an interactive interface. The teliospore wall and wall ornamentation development was the same in postmature jiaobai tissues with sporadic sori and in the huijiao (jiaobai tissues containing the massive sori), but a sheath enveloping the teliospore was more transparent in the process of teliospore development in the jiaobai than in the huijiao.  相似文献

Sugarcane plants were developed that produce the sucrose isomers trehalulose and isomaltulose through expression of a vacuole‐targeted trehalulose synthase modified from the gene in ‘Pseudomonas mesoacidophila MX‐45’ and controlled by the maize ubiquitin (Ubi‐1) promoter. Trehalulose concentration in juice increased with internode maturity, reaching about 600 mm , with near‐complete conversion of sucrose in the most mature internodes. Plants remained vigorous, and trehalulose production in selected lines was retained over multiple vegetative generations under glasshouse and field conditions.  相似文献

Mechanical perturbation of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) internodes results in reduced elongation and increased diameter of the internodes (thigmomorphogenesis). Perturbation of a single lower internode results in thigmorphogenesis in that internode and all of those internodes above it, the degree of which depends on the age (size) of the internodes and the frequency of perturbation. Application of ethephon to the internodes mimics mechanical perturbation. Early removal of the shoot tip or the cotyledons does not effect thigmomorphogenesis, indicating that those organs do not exert control over the response. Mechanical perturbation of one plant of a pair grafted together at the first internodes results in thigmomorphogenesis in both plants. This indicates the transport of some factor from the mechanically perturbed donor to the non-treated receiver. Evidence is presented to support the contention that ethylene is not this transportable factor.  相似文献

Summary We investigated the food preferences of captive snowshoc hares (Lepus americanus) in winter to test three hypotheses proposed to explain food choices by hares: (1) that food choice is related to the protein content of twigs; 92) that defensive chemicals present in twigs are negatively correlated with hare food preferences; and (3) that hares eat less-preferred but protein-rich twigs when their diet is buffered by large amounts of palatable food. Hares exhibited striking and consistent preferences for different species and, in general, preferred mature twigs to juvenile growth stages. Preferences across species among mature twigs were not, however, the same as preferences for juvenile growth stages across species. None of the three hypotheses adequately explained food choice by hares. Hares did not (1) select twigs that were high in protein content. They also did not (2) consistently select twigs that were low in resins or phenols. Finally (3), hares generally ate less, not more of non-preferred twigs in the presence of a protein and energy rich alternative food, commercial rabbit chow. Food preferences of hares must presumably have some chemical basis, but no simple theory has yet explained what this is. We suggest that hares may not be under severe dietary constraints imposed by chemical defenses in winter.  相似文献
