Previous work has shown that both human adults and children attend to grasping actions performed by another person but not necessarily to those made by a mechanical device. According to recent neurophysiological data, the monkey premotor cortex contains "mirror" neurons that discharge both when the monkey performs specific manual grasping actions and when it observes another individual performing the same or similar actions. However, when a human model uses tools to perform grasping actions, the mirror neurons are not activated. A similar "mirror" system has been described in humans, but whether or not it is also tuned specifically to biological actions has never been tested. Here we show that when subjects observed manual grasping actions performed by a human model a significant neural response was elicited in the left premotor cortex. This activation was not evident for the observation of grasping actions performed by a robot model commanded by an experimenter. This result indicates for the first time that in humans the mirror system is biologically tuned. This system appears to be the neural substrate for biological preference during action coding.  相似文献

Background

Most of us are poor at faking actions. Kinematic studies have shown that when pretending to pick up imagined objects (pantomimed actions), we move and shape our hands quite differently from when grasping real ones. These differences between real and pantomimed actions have been linked to separate brain pathways specialized for different kinds of visuomotor guidance. Yet professional magicians regularly use pantomimed actions to deceive audiences.

Methodology and Principal Findings

In this study, we tested whether, despite their skill, magicians might still show kinematic differences between grasping actions made toward real versus imagined objects. We found that their pantomimed actions in fact closely resembled real grasps when the object was visible (but displaced) (Experiment 1), but failed to do so when the object was absent (Experiment 2).

Conclusions and Significance

We suggest that although the occipito-parietal visuomotor system in the dorsal stream is designed to guide goal-directed actions, prolonged practice may enable it to calibrate actions based on visual inputs displaced from the action.  相似文献

Glucocorticoids (GCs) are required by many kinds of organs, tissues and cells for initiation or maintenance of their specific functions in vivo and in vitro. It is noticeable that most of these GC actions can be induced at much lower levels of dosage or concentration than the well-known actions of the steroids in gluconeogenesis, immune suppression and anti-inflammation. Observation of another's action can selectively facilitate the brain's motor circuits for making the same action . A "mirror-matching mechanism" might map observed actions onto the observer's own motor representations . Crucially, this view suggests that the brain represents others' actions like one's own. However, this hypothesis has been difficult to test because the experience of one's own body differs from that of others' bodies with respect to viewpoint, morphological features, familiarity, and the hallmark feature of kinaesthetic experience. We used an established method for manipulating the sense of body ownership ("rubber-hand illusion") to compare effects of observing actions that either were or were not illusorily attributed to the subject's own body. We show that observing another's actions facilitated the motor system, whereas observing identical actions, which were illusorily attributed to the subject's own body, showed the opposite pattern. Thus, motor facilitation strongly depends on the agent to whom the observed action is attributed. This result contradicts previous concepts of equivalence between one's own actions and actions of others and suggests that social differentiation, not equivalence, is characteristic of the human action system.  相似文献

The premotor and parietal mirror neuron system (MNS) is thought to contribute to the understanding of observed actions by mapping them onto "corresponding" motor programs of the observer [1-24], but how would the MNS respond to the observation of hand actions if the observer never had hands? Would it not show changes of blood-oxygen-level dependent (BOLD) signal, because the observer lacks motor programs that can resonate [12, 25, 26], or would it show significant changes because the observer has motor programs for the foot or mouth with corresponding goals [15, 17, 19, 27, 28]? We scanned two aplasic subjects, born without arms or hands, while they watched hand actions and compared their brain activity with that of 16 control subjects. All subjects additionally executed actions with different effectors (feet, mouth, and, for controls, hands). The BOLD signal of aplasic individuals within the putative MNS was augmented when they watched hand actions, demonstrating the brain's capacity to mirror actions that deviate from the embodiment of the observer by recruiting voxels involved in the execution of actions that achieve corresponding goals by different effectors. This sheds light on the functional organization of the MNS and predominance of goals in imitation.  相似文献

The effects of the benzodiazepine antagonist CGS 8216 (2-phenylpyrazolo[4,3-c]quinoline-3(5H)-one) were examined in a thirsty rat conflict test in the presence and absence of pentobarbital. CGS 8216 (2.5-10 mg/kg i.p.) did not affect nonpunished responding, but doses of 5 and 10 mg/kg significantly reduced the rate of punished responding (i.e., the number of 3 second drinking episodes in a "shock" contingency). However, a dose of CGS 8216 which did not significantly alter punished responding (2.5 mg/kg) antagonized the anticonflict actions of pentobarbital. These observations suggest that while high doses of CGS 8216 may elicit an "anxiogenic" response in rodents, lower doses of CGS 8216 antagonize the anticonflict actions of a compound which has been shown to enhance benzodiazepine affinity in vitro. These data imply that the anticonflict actions of pentobarbital may be mediated through benzodiazepine receptors.  相似文献

The pathophysiologic importance of insulin resistance in diseases such as obesity and diabetes mellitus has led to great interest in defining the mechanism of insulin action as well as the means to overcome the biochemical defects responsible for the resistance. Vanadium compounds have been discovered to mimic many of the metabolic actions of insulin both in vitro and in vivo and improve glycemic control in human subjects with diabetes mellitus. Apart from its direct insulinmimetic actions, we found that vanadate modulates insulin metabolic effects by enhancing insulin sensitivity and prolonging insulin action. All of these actions appear to be related to protein tyrosine phosphatase (PTP) inhibition. However, in contrast to its stimulatory effects, vanadate inhibits basal and insulin-stimulated system A amino acid uptake and cell proliferation. The mechanism of these actions also appears to be related to PTP inhibition, consistent with the multiple roles of PTPs in regulating signal transduction. While the precise biochemical pathway of vanadate action is not yet known, it is clearly different from that of insulin in that the insulin receptor and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase do not seem to be essential for vanadate stimulation of glucose uptake and metabolism. The ability of vanadium compounds to bypass defects in insulin action in diseases characterized by insulin resistance and their apparent preferential metabolic versus mitogenic signaling profile make them attractive as potential pharmacological agents.  相似文献

Extracellular ATP and other purinergic agonists were found to inhibit cAMP accumulation by depressing adenylate cyclase as an "inhibitory action" and/or to stimulate arachidonate release in association with phospholipase C or A2 activation and Ca2+ mobilization as "stimulatory actions" in FRTL-5 cells. The stimulatory actions of a group of P2-agonists represented by ATP were partially inhibited by the pretreatment of the cells with islet-activating protein (IAP), pertussis toxin, even when an about 41-kDa membrane protein(s) was completely ADP-ribosylated. Only the IAP-sensitive part of the stimulatory actions was antagonized by 1,3-diethyl-8-phenylxanthine (DPX), an adenosine antagonist. GTP and 8-bromoadenosine 5'-triphosphate (Br-ATP) at two to three orders of higher concentrations than ATP also exerted the stimulatory actions, although they were entirely insensitive to both IAP and DPX. Ligand binding experiments with, [35S]ATP gamma S and [3H]DPX showed that ATP occupies both DPX-sensitive and insensitive receptor sites, whereas GTP does only ATP-displaceable DPX-insensitive sites. Thus, lack of sensitivity of GTP action to DPX was associated with its inability to occupy the DPX-sensitive sites. Adenosine 5'-O-(1-thiotriphosphate) (ATP alpha S), adenosine 5'-O-(2-thiodiphosphate) (ADP beta S) and P1-agonists such as AMP and N6-(L-2-phenylisopropyl-adenosine (PIA) did not show any stimulatory action. Nevertheless, the agonists remarkably enhanced the stimulatory actions of GTP or Br-ATP. Such permissive actions of PIA and others were sensitive to both IAP and DPX, as were shown for a part of the stimulatory actions of ATP as well as the "inhibitory actions" of both PIA and ATP. We conclude that an IAP substrate G-protein(s) which mediates the inhibitory action of purinergic agonists via a DPX-sensitive purinergic receptor(s) may not directly link to the phospholipase C or A2 system but enhance the system which links to a DPX-insensitive P2-receptor, in an indirect or permissive manner.  相似文献

Background

Physiological studies of perfectly still observers have shown interesting correlations between increasing effortfulness of observed actions and increases in heart and respiration rates. Not much is known about the cortical response induced by observing effortful actions. The aim of this study was to investigate the time course and neural correlates of perception of implied motion, by presenting 260 pictures of human actions differing in degrees of dynamism and muscular exertion. ERPs were recorded from 128 sites in young male and female adults engaged in a secondary perceptual task.

Principal Findings

Our results indicate that even when the stimulus shows no explicit motion, observation of static photographs of human actions with implied motion produces a clear increase in cortical activation, manifest in a long-lasting positivity (LP) between 350–600 ms that is much greater to dynamic than less dynamic actions, especially in men. A swLORETA linear inverse solution computed on the dynamic-minus-static difference wave in the time window 380–430 ms showed that a series of regions was activated, including the right V5/MT, left EBA, left STS (BA38), left premotor (BA6) and motor (BA4) areas, cingulate and IF cortex.

Conclusions and Significance

Overall, the data suggest that corresponding mirror neurons respond more strongly to implied dynamic than to less dynamic actions. The sex difference might be partially cultural and reflect a preference of young adult males for highly dynamic actions depicting intense muscular activity, or a sporty context.  相似文献

Intracellular microelectrode studies were conducted to investigate the actions of the partial agonist-antagonist nalorphine at an opiate receptor on functional frog skeletal muscle fiber membranes. In high bath concentrations (greater than or equal to 10(-4) M), nalorphine alone produces agonist actions similar to the "full" opiate agonists. These actions were (i) to depress both the sodium and potassium (gNa and gK) conductance increases due to electrical stimulation by a nonspecific local anestheticlike mechanism and (ii) to depress gNa by a specific opiate receptor mediated mechanism. In a much lower bath concentration (1 X 10(-8) M) nalorphine acts to antagonize the specific opiate receptor mediated depression of gNa produced by the "full" agonist meperidine. Thus in this preparation nalorphine, "the partial antagonist," has the same actions as naloxone, which is often considered to be a full antagonist. The quantitative differences observed in the effects of these two opiate antagonists are discussed.  相似文献

"Necking" behaviour in giraffe takes place only in all male herds. When the animals are in a head to head posture the intensity is either high or low, but when animals take up a head to tail posture the actions are always of high intensity and appear to have greater sexual significance.
The significance of "necking" is discussed, and it is suggested that these ritualized actions form an important sexuo-social bonding mechanism whereby a hierarchy is created amongst the males, and movement between strictly bachelor and mixed herds helps to maintain contact between the sexes in this polygamous mammal.  相似文献

Most experimental information regarding the mechanism of action of prolactin in its diverse array of target tissues has been discovered using mammary tissues. Evidence has recently been presented that suggests that prolactin may be "internalized" into its target cells and have intracellular actions. Accordingly, it has been reported that prolactin stimulates RNA synthesis in isolated nuclei from mammary tissues; and by immunoflorescent studies, prolactin has been located within its target cells. It has been further suggested from additional experimental studies that the primary action of prolactin may involve its initial interaction with fixed plasma membrane receptor sites. Subsequent actions of prolactin may involve the following: a) an increased intracellular concentration of potassium and a reduced level of sodium, b) an increased level of cGMP and a reduced level of cAMP, c) an enhanced rate of prostaglandin biosyntheesis mediated by a stimulation of phospholipase A2 activity, and d) a stimulation of polyamine synthesis. It has also been shown that the actions of prolactin require calcium ions in the extracellular environment. Laboratory studies have thus indicated that the actions of prolactin may be carried out by a number of processes; but a single, primary action of this hormone that accounts for all of its actions has not yet been proven.  相似文献

Previous studies have shown that Ro 5-4864 is a potent convulsant and increases the firing rate of substantia nigra zona reticulata neurons. The pharmacologic profile of compounds that antagonize these actions suggested that the effects of Ro 5-4864 were not mediated by "brain-type" benzodiazepine receptors. We examined a number of compounds that are structurally related to Ro 5-4864 for their capacities to displace [3H]Ro 5-4864 from "peripheral-type" binding sites and their potencies as convulsants (or as antagonists of Ro 5-4864-induced convulsions). It was observed that compounds such as KW 3600 (the N-desmethyl analog of Ro 5-4864), which have very low affinities for "peripheral-type" sites, are convulsants with a potency nearly equal to that of Ro 5-4864. In contrast, compounds such as Ro 5-6900 and PK 11195, which bind with very high affinities to "peripheral-type" binding sites, are neither convulsants nor do they antagonize the convulsant actions of Ro 5-4864. Within a series of compounds that are structurally related to Ro 5-4864 there is a good correlation (r = 0.93; p less than 0.01) between their potencies as convulsants and their capacities to displace [35S]t-butylbicyclophosphorothionate from sites that may be associated with the chloride ionophore. Thus, it appears that occupation of "peripheral-type" binding sites by high-affinity ligands may not be directly involved in the convulsant actions of Ro 5-4864 and related compounds.  相似文献

Capuchin monkeys have provided uneven evidence of matching actions they observe others perform. In accord with theories emphasizing the attentional salience of object movement and spatial relationships, we predicted that human-reared monkeys would better match events in which a human demonstrator moved an object into a new relation with another object or surface than other kinds of actions. Three human-reared capuchins were invited repeatedly by a familiar human to perform a fixed set of actions upon objects or upon their bodies, using the "Do as I do" procedure. Actions directed at the body were matched less reliably than actions involving objects, and actions were matched best when the monkey looked at the demonstration for at least 2 sec and performed its action within a few seconds after the demonstration. The most commonly matched actions were those that one monkey performed relatively often when the experiment began. One monkey partially reproduced three novel actions (out of 48 demonstrations), all three involving moving or placing objects, and two of which it also performed following other demonstrations. These findings contribute convergent evidence that capuchin monkeys display social facilitation of activity, enhanced interest in particular objects and emulation of spatial outcomes. This pattern can support the development of shared manipulative skills, as evident in traditions of foraging and tool use in natural settings. The findings do not suggest that human rearing substantively altered capuchins' ability or interest in matching the actions of a familiar human, although visual attention to the human demonstrator may have been greater in these monkeys than in normally reared monkeys.  相似文献

Background

In the context of interacting activities requiring close-body contact such as fighting or dancing, the actions of one agent can be used to predict the actions of the second agent [1]. In the present study, we investigated whether interpersonal predictive coding extends to interactive activities – such as communicative interactions - in which no physical contingency is implied between the movements of the interacting individuals.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Participants observed point-light displays of two agents (A and B) performing separate actions. In the communicative condition, the action performed by agent B responded to a communicative gesture performed by agent A. In the individual condition, agent A''s communicative action was substituted with a non-communicative action. Using a simultaneous masking detection task, we demonstrate that observing the communicative gesture performed by agent A enhanced visual discrimination of agent B.

Conclusions/Significance

Our finding complements and extends previous evidence for interpersonal predictive coding, suggesting that the communicative gestures of one agent can serve as a predictor for the expected actions of the respondent, even if no physical contact between agents is implied.  相似文献

Specific features of EEG coherence of a man-operator were revealed before the erroneous actions ("false alarm" and "signal omission") in the process of training to recognize masked visual stimuli. In persons with expressed alpha-rhythm at rest the "false alarms" were associated with the highest level of beta-frequency correlation in the frontal areas. Errors of the "signal omission" type were observed against the background of increased alpha-coherence in the frontal and occipital derivations. These features were more pronounced in the right brain hemisphere. The results suggest that the erroneous actions are predetermined by a specific state of the frontal brain regions, which participate in decision making, and are probably related with inadequate information transmission from the caudal regions to the frontal ones.  相似文献

To clarify the social functions of play panting in chimpanzees, I investigated when they emitted play panting in social play and how the interactions were affected by the occurrence of play panting. The subjects were the M-group chimpanzees living in Mahale, Tanzania. The following observations were made: (1) chimpanzees emitted play panting when they were tickled or chased but rarely did so when they tickled or chased others. Chimpanzee play panting does not have the function of a play signal communicating that these aggressive actions are performed not as aggression but as play. (2) Chimpanzees emitted play panting more often when they received aggressive actions that supposedly elicited higher arousal. (3) A chimpanzee tended to continue to perform aggressive actions when the target emitted play panting. Play panting activates the interaction of social play by encouraging the performer to continue tickling or chasing. These results can be summarized as showing that chimpanzee play panting serves as positive feedback to the play partner for continuing somewhat fragile interactions, which may contain the risk of excessive arousal and the risk of confusing defensive actions by the target of the aggressive actions with real efforts to escape the situation.  相似文献

On the basis of psychological testing two groups of subjects have been formed: "automatizators" and "searchers". The incompatibility in the individual structure of the ability to automatized and searching actions, according to the data, are connected with the presence of the complex of alternative signs of cognitive styles. The neurophysiological organization of searching and automatized intellectual actions was studied by a method of computer toposcopy of the synchronous electrical processes. It has been shown that there are spatial-frequency interactions of electrical processes of the cerebral cortex, characteristic for each of the two above mentioned individuals groups, which are probably based on the functioning of neuronal networks with different lability levels.  相似文献
