The imprinted genes Grb10 and Nesp influence impulsive behavior on a delay discounting task in an opposite manner. A recently developed theory suggests that this pattern of behavior may be representative of predicted effects of imprinted genes on tolerance to risk. Here we examine whether mice lacking paternal expression of Grb10 show abnormal behavior across a number of measures indicative of risk‐taking. Although Grb10+/p mice show no difference from wild type (WT) littermates in their willingness to explore a novel environment, their behavior on an explicit test of risk‐taking, namely the Predator Odor Risk‐Taking task, is indicative of an increased willingness to take risks. Follow‐up tests suggest that this risk‐taking is not simply because of a general decrease in fear, or a general increase in motivation for a food reward, but reflects a change in the trade‐off between cost and reward. These data, coupled with previous work on the impulsive behavior of Grb10+/p mice in the delayed reinforcement task, and taken together with our work on mice lacking maternal Nesp, suggest that maternally and paternally expressed imprinted genes oppositely influence risk‐taking behavior as predicted.  相似文献

Testosterone plays an important role in mediating male reproductive trade-offs in many vertebrate species, augmenting muscle and influencing behavior necessary for male–male competition and mating-effort. Among humans, testosterone may also play a key role in facilitating male provisioning of offspring as muscular and neuromuscular performance is deeply influenced by acute changes in testosterone. This study examines acute changes in salivary testosterone among 63 Tsimane men ranging in age from 16 to 80 (mean 38.2) years during one-hour bouts of tree-chopping while clearing horticultural plots. The Tsimane forager-horticulturalists living in the Bolivian Amazon experience high energy expenditure associated with food production, have high levels of parasites and pathogens, and display significantly lower baseline salivary testosterone than age-matched US males. Mixed-effects models controlling for BMI and time of specimen collection reveal increased salivary testosterone (p < 0.001) equivalent to a 48.6% rise, after one hour of tree chopping. Age had no effect on baseline (p = 0.656) or change in testosterone (p = 0.530); self-reported illness did not modify testosterone change (p = 0.488). A comparison of these results to the relative change in testosterone during a competitive soccer tournament in the same population reveals larger relative changes in testosterone following resource production (tree chopping), compared to competition (soccer). These findings highlight the importance of moving beyond a unidimensional focus on changes in testosterone and male–male aggression to investigate the importance of testosterone–behavior interactions across additional male fitness-related activities. Acutely increased testosterone during muscularly intensive horticultural food production may facilitate male productivity and provisioning.  相似文献

The investigation into airborne fungal spore concentrations was conducted in Szczecin (Poland) between 2004 and 2009. The objective of the studies was to determine a seasonal variation in concentrations of amerospores on the basis of meteorological parameters. The presence of spores in Szczecin was recorded using a volumetric method. Fungal spores were present in the air in high numbers in late summer and early autumn. The highest concentrations were noted in September, October and November. The peak period was recorded in August, September, October and November. The highest annual number of spores occurred in 2005 and 2007 and the lowest in 2006. High values of daily concentration of amerospores occurred during the afternoon and late at night. In 2005 and 2007 the late-night maximum was overdue about 1 or 2 h. For daily values of dew point temperature and relative humidity, the coefficients were positive, significant for p = 0.001 and ranged from 0.342 to 0.258. The average wind speed was positively correlated for p = 0.01 and the coefficient was 0.291. The similar relations were noted for hourly values of spore concentrations for p = 0.05, p = 0.01 and p = 0.001. For these spore types, the dew point temperature and relative humidity appeared to be the most influential factor.  相似文献

In order to study allergic people responding to daily changes in pollen concentrations, we compared personal diary data on allergic symptoms and the use of allergy medicines to daily pollen counts during the two unequal alder and birch pollen seasons of 2009 and 2010. Almost 90% of the 61 subjects with physician-diagnosed birch pollinosis developed conjunctival, nasal or other symptoms during the peak birch pollination. Most subjects (95%) also reported symptoms during the alder pollination. Despite a delay between the most severe symptoms and the pollen peaks and the increased risk of allergy symptoms between the alder and birch pollen peaks at much lower pollen concentrations, the number of subjects with allergy symptoms correlated with the daily pollen concentrations in both years (r 09 = 0.35, r 10 = 0.36, p < 0.01). The positive correlation was even stronger (r 09 = 0.69, r 10 = 0.74, p < 0.001) in relation to the cumulative sum of daily concentrations. The use of allergy medicines precisely followed the abundance of allergy symptoms in both years (r 09 = 0.96, r 10 = 0.70, p < 0.001). We conclude that there is a fair correlation between the daily allergy symptoms and the particular pollen concentrations, but the risk of developing symptoms at low, moderate and high concentrations is affected by the progression of the pollen season.  相似文献

A contribution to a special issue on Hormones and Human Competition.Previous research and theory suggest testosterone is an important hormone for modulating aggression and self-regulation. We propose that self-construal, a culturally-relevant difference in how individuals define the self in relation to others, may be an important moderator of the relationship between testosterone and behaviors linked to aggression. Within two studies (Study 1 N = 80; Study 2 N = 237) and an integrated data analysis, we find evidence suggesting that acute testosterone changes in men are positively associated with aggressive behavior for those with more independent self-construals, whereas basal testosterone is negatively associated with aggression when individuals have more interdependent self-construals. Although preliminary, these findings suggest that self-construal moderates the association between testosterone and aggression, thereby paving the way toward future work examining the potential cultural moderation of the behavioral effects of testosterone.  相似文献

Few studies have investigated the influence of changes in testosterone on subsequent competitive, antagonistic behavior in humans. Further, little is known about the extent to which such effects are moderated by personality traits. Here, we collected salivary measures of testosterone before and after a rigged competition. After the competition, participants were given the opportunity to act antagonistically against the competitor (allocate a low honorarium). We hypothesized that changes in testosterone throughout the competition would predict antagonistic behavior such that greater increases would be associated with the allocation of lower honorariums. Further, we investigated the extent to which personality traits related to psychopathy (fearless dominance, FD; self-centered impulsivity, SCI; and coldheartedness) moderated this relationship. In men (n = 104), greater increases in testosterone and greater FD were associated with more antagonistic behavior, but testosterone concentrations did not interact with personality measures. In women (n = 97), greater FD and SCI predicted greater antagonistic behavior, but there were no significant endocrine predictors or interactions with personality measures. In a secondary set of analyses, we found no support for the dual-hormone hypothesis that the relationship between baseline testosterone concentrations and behavior is moderated by cortisol concentrations. Thus, results are consistent with previous findings that in men, situation-specific testosterone reactivity rather than baseline endocrine function is a better predictor of future antagonistic behavior. The results are discussed with respect to the Challenge Hypothesis and the Biosocial Model of Status, and the possible mechanisms underlying the independent relations of testosterone and personality factors with antagonistic behavior.  相似文献

Plasma testosterone concentrations are essential for the diagnosis of several causes of hypogonadism, including late-onset hypogonadism. Defining the normal range for testosterone concentrations poses certain difficulties due to the changes that occur with age and the variability of the different analytical methods used.ObjectivesTo study normal ranges of testosterone in healthy young men and to compare the results of distinct analytical methods.Material and methodsWe recruited 20 healthy men with a mean age of 24.5 years (standard deviation (SD): 5.04) and a mean body mass index (BMI) of 23.8% (SD: 3.3). Total testosterone (TT) was measured by immunochemiluminescence (ICLA) and free testosterone (FT) by radioimmunoassay (RIA). Calculated free testosterone (FTc) and bioavailable testosterone (BT) were calculated using Vermeulen's formula. Serum lutropin (LH), follitropin (FSH) and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) were measured by immunoradiometric assays (IRMA).ResultsThe mean concentrations were 20 nmol/l (SD: 4.96) for TT, 0.054 nmol/L (SD: 0.01) for FT, 0.3834 nmol/L (SD: 0.09) for FTc and 9.9 nmol/L (SD: 2.8) for BT. There was no correlation between testosterone measured by different methods other than an association between FT and FTc (r=0.662, p<0.003) and between FTc and BT (r=0.979, p<0.0001). An inverse correlation was found between BMI and TT concentrations (r: ?0.52, p<0.017).ConclusionsThe normal range for testosterone in healthy young men should be established in each laboratory based on the analytical method used.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of endogenous circulating testosterone (T) on muscle androgen receptor (AR) responses to acute resistance exercise (RE). Six healthy men (26 ± 4 years; 176 ± 5 cm; 75.8 ± 11.4 kg) performed a knee extension exercise protocol on two occasions separated by 1–3 weeks. Rest preceded one trial (i.e., control [CON] trial) and a high-volume upper-body RE protocol designed to increase circulating T preceded the other trial (i.e., high T [HT] trial). Serial blood samples were obtained throughout each trial to determine circulating T concentrations. Biopsies of the vastus lateralis were obtained pre-RE (REST), 10-min post-RE (+10), and 180-min post-RE (+180) to determine muscle AR content. Circulating T concentrations remained stable during CON. Alternately, HT significantly (p ≤ 0.05) increased T concentrations above resting values (+16%). Testosterone area-under-the-time curve during HT exceeded CON by 14%. AR content remained stable from REST to +10 in both trials. Compared to the corresponding +10 value, muscle AR content at +180 tended to decrease during CON (−33%; p = 0.10) but remained stable during HT (+40%; p = 0.17). Muscle AR content at +180 during the HT trial exceeded the corresponding CON value. In conclusion, acute elevations in circulating T potentiated muscle AR content following RE.  相似文献

Tropical mountain forests provide an exceptional opportunity to evaluate the patterns of variation in carbon stocks along elevational gradients that correspond to well‐defined temperature gradients. We predicted that carbon stored in live aboveground biomass, aboveground necromass, and soil components of forests on the eastern flank of the Colombian Andes would change with elevation along this gradient extending from 750 to 2,800 m above sea level. The rationale was that the corresponding change in temperature (14–26°C) would influence tree growth and decomposition of organic matter. To address this hypothesis, we examined the carbon stored in these three components using data from 20 0.25‐ha plots located along this elevational gradient. The mean total carbon stock found in the study region was 241.3 ± 37.5 Mg C/ha. Aboveground carbon stocks decreased with elevation (p = 0.001), as did necromass carbon stocks (p = 0.016). Although soil organic carbon stocks did not differ significantly along the gradient (p = 0.153), they contributed proportionately more at higher than at lower elevations, counterbalancing the opposite trends in aboveground carbon and necromass carbon stocks. As such, total carbon stocks did not vary significantly along the elevational gradient (p = 0.576).  相似文献

The decrease in skeletal muscle mitochondrial oxidative capacity with age adversely affects muscle strength and physical performance. Factors that are associated with this decrease have not been well characterized. Low plasma lysophosphatidylcholines (LPC), a major class of systemic bioactive lipids, are predictive of aging phenotypes such as cognitive impairment and decline of gait speed in older adults. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that low plasma LPC are associated with impaired skeletal muscle mitochondrial oxidative capacity. Skeletal muscle mitochondrial oxidative capacity was measured using in vivo phosphorus magnetic resonance spectroscopy (31P‐MRS) in 385 participants (256 women, 129 men), aged 24–97 years (mean 72.5) in the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging. Postexercise recovery rate of phosphocreatine (PCr), kPCr, was used as a biomarker of mitochondrial oxidative capacity. Plasma LPC were measured using liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry. Adults in the highest quartile of kPCr had higher plasma LPC 16:0 (p = 0.04), 16:1 (p = 0.004), 17:0 (p = 0.01), 18:1 (p = 0.0002), 18:2 (p = 0.002), and 20:3 (p = 0.0007), but not 18:0 (p = 0.07), 20:4 (p = 0.09) compared with those in the lower three quartiles in multivariable linear regression models adjusting for age, sex, and height. Multiple machine‐learning algorithms showed an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.638 (95% confidence interval, 0.554, 0.723) comparing six LPC in adults in the lower three quartiles of kPCr with the highest quartile. Low plasma LPC are associated with impaired mitochondrial oxidative capacity in adults.  相似文献

BackgroundTestosterone can motivate human approach and avoidance behavior. Specifically, the conscious recognition of and implicit reaction to angry facial expressions is influenced by testosterone. The study tested whether exogenous testosterone modulates the personal distance (PD) humans prefer in a social threat context.Methods82 healthy male participants underwent either transdermal testosterone (testosterone group) or placebo application (placebo group). Each participant performed a computerized stop-distance task before (T1) and 3.5 h after (T2) treatment, during which they indicated how closely they would approach a human, animal or virtual character with varying emotional expression.ResultsMen's PD towards humans and animals varied as a function of their emotional expression. In the testosterone group, a pre-post comparison indicated that the administration of 50 mg testosterone was associated with a small but significant reduction of men's PD towards aggressive individuals. Men in the placebo group did not change the initially chosen PD after placebo application independent of the condition. However comparing the testosterone and placebo group after testosterone administration did not reveal significant differences. While the behavioral effect was small and only observed as within-group effect it was repeatedly and selectively shown for men's PD choices towards an angry woman, angry man and angry dog in the testosterone group. In line with the literature, our findings in young men support the influential role of exogenous testosterone on male's approach behavior during social confrontations.  相似文献

Testosterone is commonly thought to drive male sexual interest, but little experimental evidence demonstrates a direct relationship between natural variation in testosterone and sexual interest in healthy young men. This study measured young men's testosterone levels and their interest in visual sexual stimuli across three test sessions within 1 month. Fifteen men aged 23–28 viewed pictures of couples engaged in sexually explicit activity. Each session included a unique set of 72 pictures depicting heterosexual oral sex or intercourse presented in randomized order. Participants controlled how long they viewed each picture, with viewing time indicating sexual interest. Men's testosterone (T) levels were assayed from blood spots obtained prior to viewing the pictures. Overall, T and viewing time were positively correlated; however, the strength of this relationship varied by test session. T was marginally correlated with viewing time during the first session (r = 0.43) and not significantly correlated with viewing time on the second session (r = 0.16). During the final test session, when habituation might influence male interest in the stimuli, T was strongly correlated with viewing time (r = 0.80). Thus, the current study demonstrates a direct but context dependent relationship between testosterone and sexual interest in healthy young males.  相似文献

Previous studies with different results have suggested that total and bioavailable testosterone levels are modified by physical exercise. Such changes may be related to modifications in cortisol levels and could be reflected in some urine androgens. To determine how weight lifting training may affect serum and urinary androgens, we measured total serum testosterone (T), cortisol, sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and urinary testosterone, epitestosterone, androsterone, and etiocholanolone, in a group of 19 elite weight lifters after 20 weeks of training. SHBG increased (from 27.5 ± 9.5 to 34.7 ± 8.1 nM, p < 0.05) whereas T/SHBG decreased significantly (from 1.10 ± 0.4 to 0.85 ± 0.3, p < 0.05). Serum total testosterone and cortisol did not change significantly. In urine, androsterone and etiocholanolone decreased significantly, whereas testosterone and epitestosterone remained unchanged. Changes in T/SHBG were related positively with changes in urinary androgens (r = 0.680, p < 0.01), and changes in SHBG were negatively related with changes in urinary androgens (r = −0.578, p < 0.01). These results suggest that intense physical activity may have an influence on the elimination of androgenic hormones due mainly to changes in their transporting protein SHBG.  相似文献

Recent studies indicate that adipose tissue and adipocytokines might affect the development of prostate cancer (PCa). Leptin would have a stimulating effect on prostate cancer cells by inducing promotion and progression, whereas adiponectin would have a protective effect. The aim of this study was to determine the relation between body composition, leptin, and adiponectin levels with the prevalence and aggressiveness of PCa in men of Mendoza, Argentina. Seventy volunteers between 50 and 80 years (35 healthy men as control group and 35 with PCa) were selected. The PCa group was subclassified according to the Gleason Score (GS). Digital rectal examination, transrectal ultrasound, and prostatic biopsy were performed; PSA, testosterone, leptin, and adiponectin levels were determined; and a nutritional interview including anthropometric measurements and a food frequency questionnaire was carried out. Statistical analysis was performed by Student t test, ANOVA I, and Bonferroni (p < 0.05). Body mass index and percentage of body fat mass were not statistically different between PCa and control groups. However, body fat mass was higher in subjects with more aggressive tumors (p = 0.032). No differences were observed regarding leptin levels between the groups. Nevertheless, leptin levels were higher in subjects with high GS (p < 0.001). Adiponectin levels showed no statistical differences regarding the presence and aggressiveness of the tumor (p = 0.131). Finally, consumption and nutrient intake did not differ in the studied groups. In conclusion, body composition and leptin are related to the PCa aggressiveness but not with its prevalence.  相似文献

BackgroundPolycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Accumulating evidence has suggested that selenium (Se) is of importance for optimal function of the cardiovascular system. This study aimed to investigate the associations of selenium and selenoprotein P (SePP) with asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) and lipid profile in women with PCOS.MethodsIn this cross-sectional study, 125 females aged 18–45 years diagnosed with PCOS were recruited. An interviewer-administered questionnaire was applied to gather the relevant demographic characteristics, detailed clinical information, and lifestyle habits of participants. Fasting blood samples were obtained to measure biochemical parameters. Serum concentrations of total testosterone, sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), ADMA, and lipid profiles as well as anthropometric measurements were assessed across tertiles of serum Se and SePP concentrations.ResultsThere was a positive correlation between serum Se and SePP concentrations (r = 0.434, p < 0.001). Serum Se level was inversely correlated with ADMA (r = −0.21, p = 0.025) and TG (r = −0.17, p = 0.041) concentrations. There were also inverse correlations between SePP and ADMA (r = −0.34, p < 0.001), TG (r = −0.21, p = 0.019), and oxidized low density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) (r = −0.25, p = 0.007) levels. No significant relationship was found between serum Se and SePP concentrations with total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), apolipoprotein-A1 (Apo-A1), apolipoprotein-B (Apo-B100), total testosterone, SHBG, and free androgen index as well as anthropometric parameters (All p > 0.05).ConclusionThe present study found that Se and SePP levels were inversely correlated with ADMA and TG concentrations as well as ox-LDL levels.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo determine whether prostate-specific antigen (PSA) concentrations in type 2 diabetic men with hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism are lower than those in eugonadal men with type 2 diabetes and whether PSA concentrations are related to plasma testosterone concentrations.MethodsIn this cross-sectional study, we measured serum total testosterone, sex hormone–binding globulin, free testosterone, PSA, hematocrit, and hemoglobin A1c in consecutive type 2 diabetic men who presented to 2 endocrinology referral centers between January 2006 and January 2007. We collected other clinical and demographic data including age, height, weight, and ethnicity.ResultsOf 400 eligible patients, 280 men met inclusion criteria. Plasma PSA concentrations were lower in type 2 diabetic men with low free testosterone concentrations than in those with normal free testosterone concentrations (25.65 ± 2.02 ng/dL vs 31.70 ± 2.31 ng/dL, P = .011). PSA concentrations were positively related to age (r = 0.34, P < .001), total testosterone (r = 0.29, P < .001), free testosterone (r = 0.17, P = .02), and sex hormone– binding globulin (r = 0.22, P < .001) and negatively related to body mass index (r = –0.28, P < .001). In stepwise backward regression analysis, PSA concentration was predicted by age (P < .001) and free testosterone (P < .001), but not by body mass index or sex hormone–binding globulin.ConclusionsPlasma PSA concentrations are lower in type 2 diabetic men with hypogonadism than in eugonadal men with type 2 diabetes, and plasma PSA is related to age, plasma total testosterone concentrations, and free testosterone concentrations in patients with type 2 diabetes. The aim of this study was to characterize the association between adipocyte enlargement and circulating levels of serum amyloid A (SAA). Furthermore, we wanted to search for possible associations with measures of glycemic control and levels of circulating adipokines and/or inflammatory markers in men and women with a large range in body mass index. The study cohort consisted of 167 subjects, 114 non-diabetic and 53 with Type 2 diabetes. Adipocyte diameter as well as circulating levels of SAA, C-reactive protein (CRP), adiponectin, leptin, interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor alpha, glucose and insulin were measured. Women had higher serum levels of SAA than men (p = 0.044). SAA levels were weakly but positively correlated with BMI (p = 0.043) and % body fat (p = 0.027) in all subjects as well as subcutaneous adipocyte diameter (p = 0.034) in women. Furthermore, in all subjects we found correlations between SAA levels and levels of CRP (p < 0.001), interleukin-6 (p < 0.001), leptin (p = 0.003), insulin (p = 0.006), HbA1c (p = 0.02) and HOMA-IR (p = 0.002). A majority of the correlations were strongest in women. In conclusion, serum levels of SAA are strongly correlated with serum levels of inflammatory markers as well as measures of glycemic control. There seems to be large sex differences in these associations suggesting that sex-specific factors need to be considered when analyzing SAA levels in relation to metabolic disease.  相似文献

The challenge hypothesis has been very successful in explaining patterns of testosterone secretion in response to social stimuli in avian species. However, there have been few studies in nonavian vertebrates. We tested the challenge hypothesis in male northern fence lizards (Sceloporus undulatus hyacinthinus). These males are highly territorial and nonparental. Consequently, the challenge hypothesis predicts that plasma testosterone concentrations will be insensitive to aggressive interactions. Testosterone concentrations indeed were not significantly affected by either a short (3–15 min) simulated territorial intrusion (“challenge”) in June or a longer (50–60 min) intrusion in July. Levels of corticosterone were elevated in challenged males in the long, but not the short, intrusion. Challenged males displayed significantly more intense territorial behaviors than did unchallenged control males. The intensity of territorial behavior changed significantly across the active season and was positively related to testosterone concentrations. Thus, while testosterone concentrations do not appear to be involved in rapid changes in aggressive behavior in the fence lizard, they probably are important in larger-scale behavioral changes throughout the season.  相似文献

Determining foxes’ social preference, and how this influences their social behaviour towards different conspecifics at different ages may give us a better understanding of how to prevent foxes from exposure of possible social stressors when housed in groups. Here, we investigated the effect of familiarity on social preferences in silver fox females and their motives for seeking social contact at two different ages. Fourteen silver fox females conducted two preference tests, first at the age of 9 weeks and the second at the age of 24 weeks, where they could choose between an empty cage, a familiar female or an unfamiliar female at their own age. The position and behaviour of the females were recorded using instantaneous sampling every tenth minute for 26 h. There was a clear preference to seek contact with a conspecific at 9 weeks of age (p < 0.01). The cubs did not differentiate between a familiar or unfamiliar stimulus animal (p > 0.05), however there was a tendency to play more in front of the unfamiliar stimulus animal (p = 0.07). No preference was seen for either the familiar, unfamiliar or empty cage stimulus when the females were 24 weeks old (p > 0.05), however they were more aggressive towards the unfamiliar stimulus animal (p < 0.01). Thus, there was no effect of familiarity in time spent with a social stimulus at either age, however these results suggest that the motives for seeking contact as cubs were non-aggressive and possibly play related, whereas the aggressive behaviour displayed by juveniles towards the unfamiliar female indicates an increased competitive motivation.  相似文献

Lying is a pervasive phenomenon with important social and economic implications. However, despite substantial interest in the prevalence and determinants of lying, little is known about its biological foundations. Here we study a potential hormonal influence, focusing on the steroid hormone testosterone, which has been shown to play an important role in social behavior. In a double-blind placebo-controlled study, 91 healthy men (24.32±2.73 years) received a transdermal administration of 50 mg of testosterone (n = 46) or a placebo (n = 45). Subsequently, subjects participated in a simple task, in which their payoff depended on the self-reported outcome of a die-roll. Subjects could increase their payoff by lying without fear of being caught. Our results show that testosterone administration substantially decreases lying in men. Self-serving lying occurred in both groups, however, reported payoffs were significantly lower in the testosterone group (p<0.01). Our results contribute to the recent debate on the effect of testosterone on prosocial behavior and its underlying channels.  相似文献
