Diatom communities along stream longitudinal gradients   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
1. Summer diatom communities on artificial substrates were sampled weekly for a month in three first- to sixth-order tributaries of the Kentucky River to determine how community structure varied with stream size. 2. Diatom cell abundances were generally higher in the headwaters. Species diversity increased in a downstream direction in two of the streams, and in an upstream direction in the third. However, diversity in general seemed more closely related to current regimes than to stream size per se, with highest species diversity at intermediate current velocities. 3. Variation in diatom accumulation rates was greater in downstream communities than in the headwater assemblages of two streams, suggesting that downstream communities may experience greater fluctuations in abundance, at least under low-flow conditions. 4. Patterns of species distributions suggested a relationship between morphological growth forms (guilds) and stream size, as well as the influence of current. Achnanthes spp., Eunotia spp., erect, and stalked taxa were more commonly associated with headwater assemblages. Filamentous and centric diatoms occurred with greater frequency downstream.  相似文献

Benthic diatoms were sampled in two rapids, in a turbid South-Finnish river (R. Keravanjoki, 22 FTU) and a clear water river in eastern Finland (R. Vaikkojoki, 4 FTU), to evaluate the diversity and spatial distribution patterns of diatom communities and especially their relationships to current velocity. In both rapids, epilithic diatoms were sampled in 15 sampling squares within three current velocity classes (10 cm s–1, 40 cm s–1 and 100 cm s–1). The sampling squares had significantly different diatom communities in the three current velocity classes at both sampling sites, however, separation of the communities was much more pronounced in the clear water river (p < 0.001) than in the turbid river (p < 0.05). In the clear water river, communities at the highest velocity were highly different from those at the lower velocities. On the other hand, in the turbid river, communities were more similar at all velocities. Significant (p < 0.05) indicators for highest current velocity in the clear water R. Vaikkojoki were Fragilaria capucina var. gracilis Hustedt, F. capucina var. rumpens Lange-Bertalot and Meridion circulare Agardh. There were no significant indicators for high current velocity in the turbid R. Keravanjoki. Cocconeis placentula Ehr., Cymbella sinuata Gregory and Navicula lanceolata (Agardh) Ehr. were the three most abundant species in the highest velocity. This study showed that diatom community was highly specialized but low in diversity at the highest velocity in the clear water river. This pattern was not seen in the turbid R. Keravanjoki, indicating that the diatom community could withstand at the higher current velocities. In addition, the results show the importance of sampling in a variety of current regimes, particularly in clear water rivers, in order to properly assess the diatom diversity and community of a river section.  相似文献

Seventeen species of diatoms, representing a broad range of sizes, shapes, and growth habits, were collected from rocks in rapidly-flowing sections of the Mitchell River, North Carolina. The diatoms ingested by adult Goniobasis proxima, juvenile Leptoxis carinata, and adult Physa sp. co-occurring in this habitat were indistinguishable from one another, in spite of great differences in radular morphology. All snails sampled the diatom flora almost randomly, with only one or two of the larger diatom species under-represented in the gut contents. Some snails also seemed to selectively ingest the smaller individuals of the larger diatom taxa, and larger individuals of the smaller diatom taxa. The diatoms identifiable in juvenile Goniobasis guts were somewhat more distinctive, although this seemed to be due at least partly to more mechanical breakage. The diatom flora of quiet, muddy pools was much different from that of shallow, rocky areas, but once again, Goniobasis seemed to sample the available flora randomly. Seasonal variation was also apparent in the diatom diet of Goniobasis. We suggest that in some cases, it may be reasonable to use snails to sample the diatom assemblage present in a particular habitat, if more direct methods are impractical.  相似文献

Interactions have been studied between juvenile plants of green, brown, and red marine algae and 31 diatom clones isolated from a variety of marine eulittoral habitats. The interactions seemed to be of an individual nature for both juvenile plants and diatoms. Germlings of Ulva lactuca L. mostly showed enhanced growth, often with significant increases in population sizes of the accompanying diatoms. Fucus spiralis L. germlings were mainly unaffected by growth in the presence of the diatom clones, but growth of the diatoms was often stimulated. Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jol. germlings were little affected, whilst the accompanying diatoms were less noticeably affected than with Fucus spiralis. Germlings of F. vesiculosus L. often showed growth inhibitions in the presence of diatoms, with many diatom populations showing enhanced growth. Similarly, the discoid encrusting sporelings of Chondrus crispus Stackh. showed growth inhibitions where there were measurable interactions, although the accompanying diatoms usually failed to show growth stimulations. The discoid sporelings of Gigartina stellata (Stackh. in With.) Batt. showed high mortalities, usually with marked increases in population sizes of accompanying diatoms.  相似文献

A population dynamics analysis for planktonic diatoms is presented that allows estimates of the net rate of increase (k), the death rate (δ), the sedimentation rate (σ) and, in absence of grazing, the growth rate (μ). It requires counts of live and dead cells suspended in the euphotic part of the water column and accumulated in sedimentation traps. The application of the model is demonstrated for the three dominant summe diatom species in Lake Constance. Asterionella formosa Hass, Fragilaria crotonensis Kitton and Stephanodiscus binderanus Krieger. Only during the first two weeks of the summer bloom of diatoms the loss rates were unimportant in comparison to the growth rates. Thereafter diatom population dynamics was strongly influenced by sedimentation and mortality, which sometimes led to a decrease in population density even when cell division continued at high rates. There were two periods of extraordinarily high death rates, which were associated in the case of A. formosa with silicon depletion and in the case of F crotensis with fungal parasitism.  相似文献

Periphytic diatom communities’ colonization patterns were studied at three sampling stations of the Red–Nhue–Tolich hydrosystem presenting different urban pollution levels by using artificial substrates for 6 weeks in dry season 2005. Structural characteristics of periphytic diatoms developed on glass substrates at each sampling site were followed and compared. This experiment showed, through various general criteria (total diatom density, dry weight biomass) and specific criteria (relative diatom abundances, indices) that the structure of benthic diatoms developed on these substrates was strongly affected by pollution as early as the second week of colonization. Communities exposed to heavily and moderately polluted sites contained species which are known to be saprophilous or tolerant to organic pollution such as Nitzschia umbonata, Nitzschia palea, Cyclotella meneghiniana, Eolimna minima. Growth inhibition of diatom communities at the heavily polluted site was mostly related to a strong increase of organic load rather than to low metallic input, though metallic (Cd and Zn) burdens have been successfully quantified in the biofilms developed at the three studied sites. Nevertheless, no significant difference in species richness and diversity index between colonization duration times was observed. Based on values of diatom indices Indice de Polluosensibilité (IPS) and diatom assemblage index to organic water pollution (DAIPo), water quality could be classified as medium quality at Red site, polluted at NT2 and heavily polluted at TL. Thus, the use of diatoms as a tool for water assessment appears suitable for monitoring rivers in Vietnam, as it is in several other countries.  相似文献

The vitamin B12 requirement of several marine diatoms can be satisfied in B12?limited laboratory cultures by heterotrophic marine bacteria isolated from the same waters and from sediments. The bacteria can utilize diatom excretory products, or the remains of dead diatom cells, in the production of the vitamin. The growth of 12 B121? requiring diatoms (7 genera) in mixed cultures with 14 different bacteria (without added B12) was compared to the growth of those same diatoms in axenic cultures with excess added B12. Diatom growth was generally rapid in the first few days, followed by sustained, slower growth. The diatom yields in mixed cultures ranged from 0.8 to 84% of the yields in axenic cultures with added B12. In a detailed study of one mixed culture, increases in diatom densities were paralleled by increases in cell densities of the bacterium during the first few days of exponential diatom growth. During the period of slow diatom growth, when diatom densities oscillated but steadily increased, the decreases in diatom densities were associated with increased bacterial growth. This suggests that death of a fraction of the B12-limited diatom population releases sufficient organic matter to stimulate growth of the bacteria and their subsequent excretion of B12; this B12 in turn stimulates further growth of the diatoms. Diatom-bacteria interactions leading to the production of B12 may be important in maintaining viable populations of B12-requiring diatoms in nutrient-poor waters during periods between blooms, when conditions are unfavorable for rapid growth.  相似文献

Benthic diatoms growing on hard substrata are used for their bioindication ability in freshwater quality monitoring. Artificial substrata are needed in cases where any natural substrate is present or to achieve similar sampling conditions between sites. Prior to use marine benthic diatoms for monitoring, a standardized protocol for sampling on artificial substrata must be set up. Two major types of information are required: (1) the time needed for a diatom community to be well developed and mature (climax stage); (2) the optimal growth conditions, given that the substrataum nature and texture are important parameters for the initial phase of biofilm development and can influence the future diatom assemblage. Three substrataum types were tested: frosted Plexiglass®, frosted glass, and rough enameled tiles. They were submerged for 8 weeks and sampled weekly. The experiment was conducted at five sites of distinct morphology and water chemistry, along the coastal area of Martinique Island, French West Indies. Development of diatom community was studied through biofilm dry weight, valve density, species richness, and species relative abundances. Globally, substratum type had no significant effect on any parameter. Frosted Plexiglass® was found to be the most interesting substratum because of higher valve densities and practical use. The asymptotic phase of biofilm development was encountered between 5 and 8 weeks depending on site and parameter. A compromise between community development and vandalism or loss through time was fixed to 5 weeks. This period is longer than for stream environments and is valid for tropical oligotrophic marine environments.  相似文献

Spatial distributional patterns of benthic diatoms and their relation to current velocity were investigated in an unshaded cobble-bottom reach of White Creek (Washington County, NY). On 27 August 1999, diatoms were sampled and current velocity and depth were measured on a regular square sampling grid with a grain size of 0.01 m2, interval of 0.5 m, and extent of 16 m2. The relative abundance of the 18 common diatom species enumerated in the 81 samples was subjected to detrended correspondence analysis (DCA). The first axis (DCA1) explained 51% of the variance in diatom data and separated the samples according to current regimes. The spatial autocorrelation of DCA1 sample scores in deposition and erosion regions of White Creek was determined by Moran's I statistic to indicate patch size. In White Creek the patch length of all diatom communities was more than 3.1 m, whereas the patch width was 1 m in the deposition region and 0.5 m in the erosion region. There were 5 dominant diatom taxa, Achnanthes minutissima Kütz. et vars, Fragilaria capucina Dezmazières et vars, F. crotonensis Kitt., Diatoma vulgaris Bory, and Synedra ulna (Nitz.) Ehr. et vars. The patch length of the dominant species varied from 1 to more than 4.1 m, whereas the patch width, if defined, was 0.5 m. Achnanthes minutissima and F. capucina, the two diatom species with the highest relative abundance, displayed spatially structured patches of low abundance and comparatively random patches of high abundance, suggesting broad scale abiotic control of species performance in low abundance regions and finer scale biotic control of high abundance areas. Another objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that higher current velocities, which generally impede immigration, would increase randomness and complexity (i.e. homogeneity of diatom distributional patterns). The spatial complexity in low versus high velocity transects was determined by calculating the respective fractal dimension (D) of DCA1 scores. D of DCA1 was higher in the higher current velocity transects, suggesting that spatial complexity and homogeneity of diatom communities increased in faster currents. Partial canonical correspondence analysis was conducted on diatom, environmental, and spatial data to assess how much of the variance in species distribution could be attributed to environmental (current velocity and depth) versus spatial factors. The variance of species data, explained by the environment (exclusively current velocity), was 38%; whereas space alone contributed only 10%, indicating that 1) current velocity was the major factor that controlled diatom distribution in streams and 2) there were other spatially dependent variables, most likely biotic, but their role in shaping diatom communities was minor.  相似文献

1. Although diatoms have been used for many decades for river monitoring around the world, studies showing evidence that diatoms integrate temporal variability in water chemistry are scarce. 2. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the response of the Eastern Canadian Diatom Index (IDEC: Indice Diatomées de l’Est du Canada) with respect to temporal water chemistry variability using three different spatio‐temporal data sets. 3. Along a large phosphorus gradient, the IDEC was highly correlated with averaged water chemistry data. Along within‐stream phosphorus gradients, the IDEC integrated phosphorus over various periods of time, depending on the trophic status of the site studied (Boyer, Nicolet or Ste. Anne river) and variability in nutrient concentration. 4. In the Ste. Anne River, where nutrient concentrations were low and generally stable, an input of phosphorus induced a rapid change in diatom community structure and IDEC value within the following week. In the mesotrophic Nicolet River, the observed integration period was approximately 2 weeks. Diatom communities in the eutrophic Boyer River appeared to be adapted to frequent and significant fluctuations in nutrient concentrations. In this system, the IDEC therefore showed a slower response to short term fluctuations and integrated nutrient concentrations over a period of 5 weeks. 5. Our results suggest that the integration period varies as a function of trophic status and nutrient concentration variability in the streams. Oligotrophic streams are more sensitive to nutrient variations and their diatom communities are directly altered by nutrient increase, while diatom communities of eutrophic rivers are less sensitive to nutrient fluctuations and major variations take a longer time to be integrated into index values. 6. The longer integration period in the eutrophic environment may be attributed to the complexity of the diatom community. The results from this study showed that the diversity and evenness of the communities increased with trophic status.  相似文献

1. Samples for the analysis of attached diatoms and surface water chemistry were taken at thirty-five stations in sixteen soft-water streams in the Netherlands during autumn 1990. Most were located in pine forest and heathland catchments, fed by deep groundwater (median residence time 87 years), with no direct influence of agricultural or urban drainage water. 2. The chemical data from sixteen stations were compared with data collected in 1974 and 1981. There were no significant increases in pH (6.3 in 1974, 6–4 in 1990) or in sulphate (200 mmol m?3 in 1974, 229 mmol m?3 in 1990). Over the same period nitrate increased significantly from 17 to 158 mmol m?3, while alkalinity decreased significantly from 355 to 251 meq m?3. 3. The most important correlates with the distribution of diatoms, as revealed by canonical correspondence analysis, were pH, nitrate, cross-sectional area of the stream and the Ca/(Ca + Cl) ratio. 4. Diatom assemblages of upstream stations indicated more acid conditions than those of downstream stations. Also there was considerable variation in the diatom assemblages of different habitats, 5. A diatom-pH transfer function was developed using the weighted-averaging method. The function was applied to comparable pairs of samples which were collected in 1974 and 1990 at ten stations. There was a significant decrease in the median diatom-inferred pH from 6.78 in 1974 to 6.55 in 1990. 6. The diatom assemblages are diverse and contain a high proportion of filamentous diatoms, particularly Aulacoseira crenulata and A. alpigena, which are rare in Western Europe. This is a response to the low current velocity (median 5 cm?1) and the relatively constant deep groundwater discharge.  相似文献

We investigated the composition, biomass and cell size dynamics of the marine planktonic diatom species along a coastal-open sea gradient in relation to the hydrological characteristics, during four oceanographic cruises in July 2005, May–June 2006, September 2006 and March 2007 in the Gulf of Gabes. The study of the marine planktonic diatoms throughout the sampling period showed the presence of 40 different species belonging to 22 pennate and 18 centric diatom species. Centric diatoms were more abundant than the pennate ones; 56% and 44% of total diatom abundance, respectively. Diatoms were very abundant, representing about 60% of the total phytoplankton abundance, with an exception in July 2005 (19%) during which Dictyochophyceae were the most dominant group (41% of the total phytoplankton abundance). Diatoms, which were dominant in the coastal samples, mainly proliferate in the semi-mixing conditions (May–June 2006), whereas they declined in the offshore area, most likely due to silicate shortage. In this period, in spite of the high abundance of diatom planktonic cells, only diatom biomass was correlated with silica amount, proving that biomass was a better ecological bio-indicator than abundance. The results suggest that the marine planktonic diatoms taxa were generally adapted to specific hydrological structure. In fact, the dominance index of diatoms showed that the biodiversity of diatoms increased gradually along the coastal-open sea gradient except in May–June 2006 during which a slight decrease along the inshore towards offshore areas was observed. This index increase depended on a coastal-open sea distance during thermal stratification (July 2005 and September 2006) and mixing periods (March 2007).  相似文献

Benthic diatoms form a particularly important community in oligotrophic lakes, but factors influencing their distribution are not well known. This study reports the depth distribution of living motile and total diatoms (living plus dead diatoms) on both natural (from sand to fine organic mud) and artificial substrates in an oligotrophic lake. On artificial substrates, motile diatom densities peaked in abundance (24–30 cells · mm?2) between 0.6 and 1.9 m depth; on natural sediment surfaces, motile diatoms were generally more numerous and peaked in abundance (925 cells · mm?2) at 1.3 m depth. Total diatom densities on artificial substrates were highest (1260 valves · mm?2) at 0.6 m depth, with very low values below 3 m depth; on natural sediment surfaces, total diatom abundances were generally much higher (21600 valves · mm?2) at 3 m depth and declined gradually with depth. Significant relationships were found between light and diatom densities on the artificial substrate. Ordination analysis indicated that substrate type significantly correlated with the variation of diatom composition on artificial and natural substrates. Our results suggest that in oligotrophic lakes, light influences benthic diatom abundance, whereas substrate type has more influence on benthic diatom composition.  相似文献

The diatoms in the Cabo Frio (Brazil) upwelling: check listand ecological study. A qualitative and quantitative study onthe diatoms from the Cabo Frio area was made and a check listproduced. Sampling was carried out over one year at an anchoragestation in the upwelling zone. Data were analysed by means ofa multivariate statistical method, in order to show the mainsynecological aspects of the diatom populations. Diatoms dominatein most samples, except in the Brazil current water where dinoflagellatesare dominant, and where there is a poor population of thermophilicdiatoms. Recently upwelled water has a poor phytoplankton composedof epiphytic and benthic species; these are substituted by intenseblooms of neritic and opportunist diatoms when the temperaturerises. The annual distribution of the diatoms accompanies theoccurrence of upwelling. The vertical thermal gradient or waterstability is the most important factor affecting the specificcomposition and distribution of the diatom communities.  相似文献

Abstract The role of grazing by marine sediment flagellates, ciliates, and meiobenthic animals in controlling production of their bacterial and diatom prey was investigated. Several novel or modified techniques were used to enumerate prey (bacteria and diatoms), measure bacterial production, quantify proto- and micrometazoan predators, and evaluate rates of bacterivory and herbivory. The results indicated that, in a temperate, marine intertidal flat composed of fine sand, colorless nanoflagellates, ciliates, and nematodes were the most important bacterivores. Together, these organisms were responsible for removing up to 53% of bacterial production, by grazing. The observed rates of bacterivory were high enough to hypothesize that periods of grazing control of bacterial production might occur regularly in similar habitats. Colorless microflagellates, ciliates, and nematodes had high rates of diatom consumption. The combined small diatom consumption rate was equivalent to 132% of diatom standing stock per day. Trophic interactions between diatoms and micro- and meiobenthos might be a factor limiting growth of small (around 10 μm) diatoms. In coarse sands of an open beach, all micrograzers except pigmented nanoflagellates were rare, whereas bacterial and diatom assemblages were rather abundant and active. In this type of sediment, the micrograzers were able to consume only a marginal percentage of bacterial production (<1%) and diatom standing stock (3.8%), thus playing a minor role in controlling the dynamics of their prey. This study presents the long‐term evolution of two floodplains lakes (San Juana and Barbacoas) of the Magdalena River in Colombia with varying degree of connectivity to the River and with different responses to climate events (i.e., extreme floods and droughts). Historical limnological changes were identified through a multiproxy‐based reconstruction including diatoms, sedimentation, and sediment geochemistry, while historical climatic changes were derived from the application of the Standardised Precipitation‐Evapotranspiration Index. The main gradients in climatic and limnological change were assessed via multivariate analysis and generalized additive models. The reconstruction of the more isolated San Juana Lake spanned the last c. 500 years. Between c. 1,620 and 1,750 CE, riverine‐flooded conditions prevailed as indicated by high detrital input, reductive conditions, and dominance of planktonic diatoms. Since the early 1800s, the riverine meander became disconnected, conveying into a marsh‐like environment rich in aerophil diatoms and organic matter. The current lake was then formed around the mid‐1960s with a diverse lake diatom flora including benthic and planktonic diatoms, and more oxygenated waters under a gradual increase in sedimentation and nutrients. The reconstruction for Barbacoas Lake, a waterbody directly connected to the Magdalena River, spanned the last 60 years and showed alternating riverine–wetland–lake conditions in response to varying ENSO conditions. Wet periods were dominated by planktonic and benthic diatoms, while aerophil diatom species prevailed during dry periods; during the two intense ENSO periods of 1987 and 1992, the lake almost desiccated and sedimentation rates spiked. A gradual increase in sedimentation rates post‐2000 suggests that other factors rather than climate are also influencing sediment deposition in the lake. We propose that hydrological connectivity to the Magdalena River is a main factor controlling lake long‐term responses to human pressures, where highly connected lakes respond more acutely to ENSO events while isolated lakes are more sensitive to local land‐use changes.  相似文献

The division rates of 26 clonal cultures representing 13 species of planktonic marine algae (6 diatoms, 2 flagellated chrysophytes, 2 coccolithophores, 1 cryptomonad flagellate, I dinoflagellate, 1 green alga) were determined every 2 h for 48 h during exponential growth on a 14:10 LD cycle in nutrient-replete batch culture. Cyclic oscillations in the division rate were detectable in 22 of these clones. Of 14 diatom clones examined, four displayed nearly constant division rates throughout the LD cycle and ten showed strong periodicity favoring division during the light periods. In contrast, all other algae (12 clones) exhibited division rate maxima during periods of darkness, and clearly detectable decreases in cell number for time intervals of 4–8 h during periods of illumination. Intraspecific differences in division periodicity were found among eight clones of the diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana (Hustedt) Hasle & Heimdal and six clones of the coccolithophore Emiliania huxleyi (Lohm.) Diatoms contribute to a substantial portion of primary production in the oceans and many lakes. Owing to their relatively heavy cell walls and high nutrient requirements, planktonic diatoms are expected to decrease with climate warming because of reduced nutrient redistribution and increasing sinking velocities. Using a historical dataset, this study shows that diatoms were able to maintain their biovolume with increasing stratification in Lake Tahoe over the last decades; however, the diatom community structure changed. Increased stratification and reduced nitrogen to phosphorus ratios selected for small-celled diatoms, particularly within the Cyclotella genus. An empirical model showed that a shift in phytoplankton species composition and cell size was consistent within different depth strata, indicating that altered nutrient concentrations were not responsible for the change. The increase in small-celled species was sufficient to decrease the average diatom size and thus sinking velocity, which strongly influences energy transfer through the food web and carbon cycling. Our results show that within the diverse group of diatoms, small-sized species with a high surface area to volume ratio were able to adapt to a decrease in mixing intensity, supporting the hypotheses that abiotic drivers affect the size structure of planktonic communities and that warmer climate favours small-sized diatom cells.  相似文献
