We characterized the relationship between fleas and their rodent hosts in the presence of prairie dog colonies and compared them to adjacent assemblages away from colonies. We evaluated the rodent-flea relationship by quantifying prevalence, probability of infestation, flea load, and intensity of fleas on rodents. As prairie dog burrows provide refugia for fleas, we hypothesized that prevalence, flea load, and intensity would be higher for rodents that are associated with black-tailed prairie dog colonies. Rodents were trapped at off- and on-colony grids, resulting in the collection of 4,509 fleas from 1,430 rodents in six study areas. The rodent community composition varied between these study areas. Flea species richness was not different between prairie dog colonies and the surrounding grasslands (p = 0.883) but was positively correlated with rodent species richness (p = 0.055). Prairie dog colonies did not increase the prevalence of fleas (p > 0.10). Flea loads on rodents did not vary between off- and on-colony grids at three of the study areas (p > 0.10). Based on the prevalence, infestation rates, and flea loads, we identified Peromyscus maniculatus, Onychomys leucogaster, and two Neotoma species as important rodent hosts for fleas and Aetheca wagneri, Orchopeus leucopus, Peromyscopsylla hesperomys, Pleochaetis exilis, and Thrassisfotus as the most important fleas associated with these rodents. Prairie dog colonies did not seem to facilitate transmission of fleas between rodent hosts, and the few rodent-flea associations exhibited significant differences between off- and on-colony grids.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine if bleeding, for biomedical purposes, influenced the behavior of horseshoe crabs, Limulus polyphemus . In the summer of 2001, ten bled and ten control (unbled) female horseshoe crabs were tracked for 26 days using acoustic telemetry in a small estuary on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. All but three crabs, two bled and one control, were located during the study period. No mortality was observed in the control group, while 20% mortality was observed within the bled group. There was no significant difference in the average rate of movement or in the spatial distribution within the estuary between the two groups. However, a difference was detected in the movement patterns. Horseshoe crabs from the bled group had a random direction of movement compared to the directional movement pattern of the control group, suggesting that the bled crabs experienced more disorientation.  相似文献

The goal of this study was to ascertain the impact of bleeding such as is done to produce Limulus lysate (LAL) on a horseshoe crab population after animals are returned to the natural environment. Techniques used to evaluate the impact of bleeding on subsequent survival included a field tagging experiment and an analysis of survival in the laboratory after bleeding. Approximately 10,000 mature Limulus polyphemus were collected, described, and individually tagged. Half were bled and half were handled as controls. All were released into the field. An analysis of the rate of tag recovery for the two groups indicates that bleeding increases mortality by 10% during the first year after bleeding. Crabs rebled after 4 weeks at large had recovered their blood volume. Animals recovered during the second year showed an 11% increase in mortality of bled over control animals. Animals held in the laboratory showed no significant differences in activity after bleeding as compared to unbled controls. Lysate bleeding followed by release of the animals does not appear to constitute a threat to current population levels of L. polyphemus.  相似文献

Summary As a preliminary to a population study using markrelease-recapture techniques, specimens of the Satyrid buttfly Melanargia galathea (L.) were subjected to a number of marking and capture techniques. Although the adults are thought to display both aposematic and cryptic coloration, the use of marks of different sizes and colours had no significant effect on recapture frequencies. However, repeated disturbance due to capture was found to significantly reduce recapture frequency. The influence of the different techniques on recapture frequencies could not be detected reliably by excessively low recapture rates, or by comparisons to Poisson distributions. It is suggested that these comparisons are of limited value as measures of the suitability of a marking or handling scheme. Subsequent work showed that capture affected recapture rates of several other species. Moreover, these effects could not be readily predicted from knowledge of the biology of these species. The implications of these findings are discussed.  相似文献

Plague, caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis, causes die-offs of colonies of prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus). It has been argued that other small rodents are reservoirs for plague, spreading disease during epizootics and maintaining the pathogen in the absence of prairie dogs; yet there is little empirical support for distinct enzootic and epizootic cycles. Between 2004 and 2006, we collected blood from small rodents captured in colonies in northern Colorado before, during, and for up to 2 yr after prairie dog epizootics. We screened 1,603 blood samples for antibodies to Y. pestis, using passive hemagglutination and inhibition tests, and for a subset of samples we cultured blood for the bacterium itself. Of the four species of rodents that were common in colonies, the northern grasshopper mouse (Onychomys leucogaster) was the only species with consistent evidence of plague infection during epizootics, with 11.1-23.1% of mice seropositive for antibody to Y. pestis during these events. Seropositive grasshopper mice, thirteen-lined ground squirrels (Spermophilus tridecemlineatus), and deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) were captured the year following epizootics. The appearance of antibodies to Y. pestis in grasshopper mice coincided with periods of high prairie dog mortality; subsequently, antibody prevalence rates declined, with no seropositive individuals captured 2 yr after epizootics. We did not detect plague in any rodents off of colonies, or on colonies prior to epizootics, and found no evidence of persistent Y. pestis infection in blood cultures. Our results suggest that grasshopper mice could be involved in epizootic spread of Y. pestis, and possibly, serve as a short-term reservoir for plague, but provide no evidence that the grasshopper mouse or any small rodent acts as a long-term, enzootic host for Y. pestis in prairie dog colonies.  相似文献

The island syndrome predicts directional changes in the morphology and demography of insular vertebrates, due to changes in trophic complexity and migration rates caused by island size and isolation. However, the high rate of human-mediated species introductions to some islands also increases trophic complexity, and this will reduce the perceived insularity on any such island. We test four hypotheses on the role of increased trophic complexity on the island syndrome, using introduced black rats (Rattus rattus) on two isolated coral atolls in the Mozambique Channel. Europa Island has remained relatively pristine and insular, with few species introductions, whereas Juan de Nova Island has had many species introductions, including predators and competitors of rats, anthropogenically increasing its trophic complexity. In the most insular environments, the island syndrome is expected to generate increases in body size and densities of rodents but decreases in the rates of reproduction and population cycling. Morphology and reproduction were compared using linear regression and canonical discriminant analysis, while density and population cycling were compared using spatially explicit capture–recapture analysis. Results were compared to other insular black rat populations in the Mozambique Channel and were consistent with predictions from the island syndrome. The manifestation of an island syndrome in rodents depends upon the trophic composition of a community, and may not relate to island size alone when many species additions, such as invasions, have occurred. The differing patterns of rodent population dynamics on each island provide information for future rodent eradication operations.  相似文献

Live-trapping of rodents was conducted over a 12-ha plot on unevenly spaced trap lines, with inner lines forming a 3.5-ha grid of closely spaced traps. This design was used to estimate the probability that bank volesClethrionomys glareolus (Schreber, 1780) and yellow-necked miceApodemus flavicollis (Melchior, 1834) trapped in small grids are true residents rather than visitors from the surrounding area. On average, 12% of the voles and 19% of the mice were trapped within and beyond the grid in the same trapping sessions. As these were mainly wide-ranging males moving over the plot, home ranges of males may be underestimated on small grids. In total, 36% of voles and 39% of mice that were marked in spring-summer were trapped at least once in their life beyond the grid. Typically, these were individuals shifting home ranges and migrating to or from the grid. The size of lifetime ranges of rodents was significantly larger than temporary home ranges and may therefore be underestimated on small grids. “Single--capture” individuals were mainly true transients rather than visitors. Only 12% of voles and 15% of mice resided on the plot for longer time than in the grid.  相似文献

The epidemiology of Bartonella species infecting Apodemus flavicollis and Myodes glareolus in a forest in Eastern Poland was followed for 2 years using mark-recapture. Infections could be acquired in any month, but prevalence, and probability of infection, peaked in the summer. There were significant differences in the pattern of infections between the two species. Both hosts were primarily infected as juveniles, but the probability of infection was highest for A. flavicollis, which, evidence suggests, experienced longer-lasting infections with a wider range of Bartonella genotypes. There was no evidence of increased host mortality associated with Bartonella, although the infection did affect the probability of recapture. Animals could become re-infected, generally by different Bartonella genotypes. Several longer lasting, poorly resolved infections of A. flavicollis involved more than 1 genotype, and may have resulted from sequential infections. Of 22 Bartonella gltA genotypes collected, only 2 (both B. grahamii) were shared between mice and voles; all others were specific either to A. flavicollis or to M. glareolus, and had their nearest relatives infecting Microtus species in neighbouring fields. This heterogeneity in the patterns of Bartonella infections in wild rodents emphasizes the need to consider variation between both, host species and Bartonella genotypes in ecological and epidemiological studies.  相似文献

Summary Of all the introduced mammalian pests, rodents are the most common invaders of islands and have triggered numerous extinctions around the globe. They have a short gestation period and large litter size, giving them the ability to colonise new areas rapidly. The same biological traits make them difficult to eradicate. Although the biodiversity benefits of removing exotic rodents from islands are increasingly being recognised, there are few published analyses of eradication attempts that critically evaluate eradication tools. This study examined the response of House Mouse (Mus musculus) populations to an eradication operation on Montague Island, Australia. While the specific impacts of mice have not been studied on this particular island, elsewhere they have been shown to have negative impacts on a range of species including plants, invertebrates, lizards and seabirds. On Montague Island, mouse abundance across different habitats was examined using mark–recapture data collected before and after the deployment of brodifacoum baits. Data obtained before baiting showed significantly lower numbers of mice in sites dominated by exotic grass compared with those dominated by native vegetation. Mouse numbers overall were declining during winter and the population was not breeding, making this an optimal time to undertake the eradication. Trapping immediately after the initial bait drop failed to capture any survivors, and no individuals have been detected during the 3 years since the deployment of baits. This study demonstrated that both small and large baits (0.6 and 2 g pellets) were effective in eradicating the House Mouse from Montague Island. While present, mice were probably slowing the re‐establishment of native vegetation by grazing seedlings and consuming seeds. With this pest now gone, the process of natural regeneration is expected to accelerate. The eradication of the House Mouse from Montague is likely to have other positive effects on the island’s biodiversity. The operation itself contributed to enhancing local capacity to eradicate exotic rodents from larger or more complex islands.  相似文献

Rodents (and their fleas) that are associated with prairie dogs are considered important for the maintenance and transmission of the bacterium (Yersinia pestis) that causes plague. Our goal was to identify rodent and flea species that were potentially involved in a plague epizootic in black-tailed prairie dogs at Thunder Basin National Grassland. We collected blood samples and ectoparasites from rodents trapped at off- and on-colony grids at Thunder Basin National Grassland between 2002 and 2004. Blood samples were tested for antibodies to Y. pestis F-1 antigen by a passive hemagglutination assay, and fleas were tested by a multiplex polymerase chain reaction, for the presence of the plague bacterium. Only one of 1,421 fleas, an Oropsylla hirsuta collected in 2002 from a deer mouse, Peromyscus maniculatus, tested positive for Y. pestis. Blood samples collected in summer 2004 from two northern grasshopper mice, Onychomys leucogaster, tested positive for Y. pestis antibodies. All three positive samples were collected from on-colony grids shortly after a plague epizootic occurred. This study confirms that plague is difficult to detect in rodents and fleas associated with prairie dog colonies, unless samples are collected immediately after a prairie dog die-off.  相似文献

We investigated whether neural afferents to the medial basal hypothalamus play an acute role in the estrous phase of FSH release in the 4-day cyclic rat. A cannula was inserted into the right atrium of the heart under brief ether anesthesia during the early afternoon of proestrus for subsequent blood collections and injection of LHRH. In some of the rats, the medial basal hypothalamus was surgically isolated from the rest of the brain with a small knife under brief ether anesthesia between 2000 h and 2130 h of proestrus. Control groups consisted of naive rats which were not treated during the night of proestrus and sham-operated animals in which the knife was lowered to the corpus callosum between 2000 h and 2130 h or proestrus. Rats were bled at 2200 h of proestrus and at 0200 h, 0600 h and 1000 h of estrus for radioimmunoassay of plasma FSH and LH. The plasma FSH levels in all 3 groups between 2200 h of proestrus and 1000 h of estrus were elevated above levels observed in other cannulated rats bled to the onset of the proestrous phase of FSH release at 1400 h of proestrus. There were no statistically significant differences in plasma FSH or LH concentrations at any of the time periods between the 3 groups of serially bled rats. The deafferentation procedure did not appear to impair the pituitary gland's ability to secret gonadotrophins as injection of 50 ng of LHRH after the bleeding at 1000 h of estrus caused substantial elevations in plasma FSH and LH concentrations which were not different between the 3 groups. The results suggest that neural afferents to the medial basal hypothalamus play no acute role in the estrous phase of FSH release in the cyclic rat.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to examine the requirement of luteal progesterone or luteal estrogen for the establishment of pregnancy in the Cebus monkey and to test in a primate species the synergism between RU 486 and letrozole (LTZ) found in rodents for inhibiting implantation. Exposure of target tissues to either hormone was suppressed during the mid-luteal phase of mating cycles by subcutaneous administration of the antiprogestin (RU 486), the aromatase inhibitor LTZ or the antiestrogen (ICI 182780) on days 4-7 of the luteal phase. Administration of 0.1 or 0.5 mg/kg of LTZ on days 5-7 of the luteal phase caused a profound drop in the levels of E(2) in all animals, whereas administration of ICI 182780 0.2 mg/kg on days 4-6 of the luteal phase had the opposite effect. The pregnancy rate in vehicle treated cycles of the same females was (58.3%). Treatment with RU 486, 0.8 mg/kg/day on days 5-7 of the luteal phase-induced endometrial bleeding in 3/5 mated females none of which became pregnant, whereas pregnancy was confirmed in one of the two animals that did not bled. Treatment with RU 486, 0.4 mg/kg/day alone or with LTZ on days 5-7 or ICI 182780 alone, on days 4-6 of the luteal phase failed to induce bleeding, allowing the establishment of pregnancy in 50.0-66.6% of the animals in these groups. We conclude that in Cebus monkeys, progesterone but not luteal estradiol is required for the establishment of pregnancy and that RU 486 and LTZ do not exhibit in this species the synergism found in rodents.  相似文献

Resource patch size and patch nutritional quality are both important factors influencing local densities of herbivores. The responses of herbivores to resource patch size have been mostly studied in aboveground plant–insect interactions, whereas belowground organisms have received little attention. We studied responses of different root-feeding nematode species associated with marram grass (Ammophila arenaria (L.) Link) to resource patch size and quality. Different nematode species were released in experimental mesocosms filled with dune sand in which we established marram grass patches of varying sizes. Half of the patches of small, medium and large size were fertilized to test if immigration probabilities of nematodes depended on patch quality. We tested the hypotheses that (1) nematodes should aggregate on larger patches and (2) colonization of patches would also depend on patch nutritional quality, with higher nematode recapture rates expected in fertilized patches. Two species (Helicotylenchus pseudorobustus, Hemicycliophora thornei) of the five released species were recaptured in the experiment. The fraction of nematodes immigrating into the rhizosphere of a plant patch increased with patch size (i.e. root biomass), which was in line with predictions of the Resource Concentration Hypothesis. When fractions were recalculated to represent recapture rates per liter of soil, recapture rates of nematodes did not differ among patch sizes, indicating that the increase in recapture rates was directly proportional to the increase in patch size. This suggests that the process through which nematodes located patches was not distinguishable from a random process where entering patches is based on random encounters with patch boundaries. In contrast to our expectation, fertilization had a strong negative effect on patch responses of both nematode species. Our study represents an approach that may be used to explore whether belowground biota behave in similar ways as aboveground biota, in order to determine how perceived differences in environments affect ecological interactions.  相似文献

A community of small rodents was studied in the woodland savanna of Liwonde National Park, Malawi from September 1984 to June 1985. Seven species were recorded on two 11 ha grids, using a capture-mark-release technique. Three species ( Aelhomys chrysophilus, Acomys spinosissimus and Tatera leucogasler ) comprised 78% of all trapped individuals. Average population numbers fluctuated from 3 to 17 individuals/ha. The grid with the densest vegetation supported the greatest number of individuals. Highest population numbers occurred in the mid-dry season (when the grids appeared to act as refugia) and in the early wet season (due to recruitment of young animals). Areas which had been burned during the dry season did not support as many individuals as unburnt areas. Population survival rates were low, with only about 50% of individuals surviving to the following month. The number of individuals/ha in Liwonde NP was lower than in similar habitats in other parts of eastern Africa, probably because of the shorter rainfall season and the consequent strong seasonal fluctuations in food resources, reduced opportunity for reproduction, and overall low productivity of the ecosystem.  相似文献

Despite advances in statistical techniques for investigating population dynamics based on mark–recapture data, the majority of our understanding about demography and regulation comes from relatively few taxa. Most proposed generalisations about the association between demography and variation in population size are based on data from vertebrates, there are few sufficiently detailed invertebrate studies to examine whether these generalisations are widely supported. The population biology of freshwater invertebrates is especially poorly known. We present a large-scale mark–recapture study of an endemic freshwater crayfish from Madagascar ( Astacoides granulimanus ). Variation in density, caused by difference in fishing pressure due to local taboos, allowed us to investigate density-dependent regulation. We found evidence of density dependence in fecundity operating through the proportion of reproductive females by size but no significant evidence of density dependence in growth. Using a prospective analysis based on the elasticities from a size-structured matrix model, we found that both recruitment rates and survival rates of large individuals were strongly associated with deterministic population growth – a result that differs from generalisations drawn from vertebrate studies. A central assumption in mark–recapture studies is that handling does not affect mortality. By treating the number of times an individual was captured as an individual covariate, easily done using the freeware program MARK, we were able to test for, and take account of, handling-induced mortality. Our results show interesting similarities, and important differences, to generalisations based on vertebrate studies and emphasise the importance of population studies on poorly known taxa.  相似文献

The transfer of iron from the Fe/transferrin complex to the erythroid cells was studied in in vitro system in mice in which a drastic and opposite change in their erythropoietic activity was produced by bleeding or actinomycin D administration. A reduction of iron donation in the serum of bled animals was found, whereas the aplastic condition induce in the donors of the serum by actinomycin D did not produce any change in the transfer process. It was also found that in spite of the normalization of the saturation in the serum of bled animals, the diminished donation remained unchanged. The possibility that conditions other than quantitative could produce this behavior is discussed.  相似文献

Monodelphis domestica, the gray short-tailed opossum, is used increasingly as an animal model in studies that require repeated blood sampling. Consequently, it is important to establish safe bleeding regimens. We investigated the effects of repeated blood loss on various hematologic values and on different organs in this species. Approximately 2 ml of blood were taken weekly from 20 animals for 13 weeks. The animals were then necropsied; members of an age- and sex-matched control group were bled (2 ml) once and necropsied immediately to obtain baseline data. Ultimately, each animal in the experimental group lost approximately three times its total blood volume. After the first bleeding in the chronically bled group, the red blood cell counts, hemoglobin, and hematocrit values decreased significantly but remained constant thereafter. In another experimental group bled only once, the hematologic values rose to higher than baseline levels after a rest of 2 weeks. Thereafter the values slowly returned to baseline levels. A notable increase in Howell-Jolly bodies occurred in the chronically bled group. Histologically, there was marked erythroid hyperplasia in the bone marrow and extramedullary hematopoiesis in the spleen, but none in the liver. Because there were no obvious detrimental physiologic effects, we conclude that M. domestica is markedly tolerant of chronic blood loss.  相似文献

本文对河西走廓不同生境中鼠类群落的物种组成和多样性进行了初步研究,在6种生境中进行了定量调查和采集,共获13种标本,隶于6(亚)科9属,其中古北界种类占优势。多样性分析结果表明:6种生境的物种丰富度指数RMargaler在.6139-1.9689之间。Shannon-Wiener指数(H')为1.0695-1.5607,Pielou旨数(J')和Simpson指数(D)分别为0.7242-0.9735和0.2768-0.4683,不同生境的丰富种数量(N1)变化趋势与H'相似,而非常丰富种数量(N2)的变化趋势为:半莫荒灌丛生境>山地草原生境>戈壁荒漠生境>农田生境>森林生境>山地半荒漠灌丛生境。降水对不同生境类型中鼠类群落物种组成和多样性起直接的限制作用,同时海拔和人类干扰也是影响的因素。  相似文献

By applying insecticides at lower rates of active ingredients per unit area, survival rates of the pests' natural enemies can be enhanced, whereas pest mortality can remain high. The effects of reduced application rates of the insecticides lambda-cyhalothrin and dimethoate on the mortality of bird cherry-oat aphid, Rhopalosiphon padi (L.), and lacewing Micromus tasmaniae Walker were determined in the laboratory and field. Cholinesterase (ChE) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) activities in survivors provided a measure of sublethal effects and general fitness. In the laboratory, lacewings were less sensitive than aphids to both insecticides, and dimethoate was more toxic than lambda-cyhalothrin. However, these results could not be recreated in the field, in part due to very low recapture rates. In summary, lambda-cyhalothrin seemed to have no effect on aphids, but it was toxic to lacewings. Dimethoate was far less toxic in the field, but aphids were still more sensitive than were lacewings. Cholinesterase activity was reduced by dimethoate exposure in the laboratory in both species, but there were species-specific differences. Dimethoate and lambda-cyhalothrin had no effects on GST activity in either species. The high mortality rate for lacewings and aphids exposed to dimethoate in the field suggests that the application rate could be reduced to as low as 10% of that recommended by manufacturers, and this should still be highly efficacious against aphids, while protecting the predatory lacewing. Measurement of enzyme activity could provide a useful indicator of "fitness" of survivors.  相似文献

Although very closely related species can differ in their fine-scale patterns of recombination hotspots, variation in the average genomic recombination rate among recently diverged taxa has rarely been surveyed. We measured recombination rates in eight species that collectively represent several temporal scales of divergence within a single rodent family, Muridae. We used a cytological approach that enables in situ visualization of crossovers at meiosis to quantify recombination rates in multiple males from each rodent group. We uncovered large differences in genomic recombination rate between rodent species, which were independent of karyotypic variation. The divergence in genomic recombination rate that we document is not proportional to DNA sequence divergence, suggesting that recombination has evolved at variable rates along the murid phylogeny. Additionally, we document significant variation in genomic recombination rate both within and between subspecies of house mice. Recombination rates estimated in F(1) hybrids reveal evidence for sex-linked loci contributing to the evolution of recombination in house mice. Our results provide one of the first detailed portraits of genomic-scale recombination rate variation within a single mammalian family and demonstrate that the low recombination rates in laboratory mice and rats reflect a more general reduction in recombination rate across murid rodents.  相似文献
