The definition of areas of endemism is one of the most important steps for historical biogeography. Here I review the dataset used by Heads (Journal of Biogeography, 2008, 35 , 2153–2175) for his panbiogeographical analysis of the New Caledonian biota. I highlight that some of the distribution data appear dubious (some localities should have been included while some others should have been deleted) when compared with current databases. In addition, some conclusions are not supported by the data themselves.  相似文献

We have tried to define "isozymes" and "differentiation" because these words are often used in a too vague sense. We have noted that the physiological role of isozymes is far from being clearly understood, even for the most studied enzyme with multiple molecular forms, lactic dehydrogenase. But we have pointed out that some isozymes are specific for some adult tissues, especially liver and muscle. They constitute consequently true "markers" of differentiation. Some mechanisms of this differentiation have been made clearer by the experiments of cell hybridization. The role of isozymes in differentiation is also illustrated by the selective disappearance of isozymic markers in some pathologycal conditions, for example : cancer and muscular diseases.  相似文献

Recently the relationship between the B and C forms of DNA has been questioned. We have found some amino acids and related amines which form complexes with DNA and favour the C form. We have studied such complexes by X-ray diffraction. With some of these counterions the transition between the B and C forms occurs smoothly, whereas in other cases there is a discontinuous transition. We conclude that the C form is a well-defined variant of the B form favoured by some counterions under low humidity conditions.  相似文献

A significant number of practicing microbiologists are not aware of the historical impact of infectious agents on the development of human institutions. Microbes have played a profound role in warfare, religion, migration of populations, art, and in diplomacy. Boundaries of nations have changed as a result of microbial diseases. Infectious agents have terminated some kingdoms and elevated others. There is a need for microbiologists to have a historical perspective of some of the major ways in which a pathogen may influence civilized populations. Conditions may exist in contemporary society for a repeat of some of the kinds of plagues suffered by previous societies. The purpose of this paper is to review examples of situations where pathogenic microbes have forced societal modifications on centers of human population.  相似文献

The adaptive significance of toxins in mushrooms has received very little consideration, although it is clear that poisons have appeared (and/or disappeared) many times in mushrooms' evolutionary history. One possibility is that poisons have evolved in some mushroom species to deter their consumption by would-be fungivores before spore dispersal. If this is so, then one might expect poisonous mushrooms to signal their unprofitability in some way. In this study, we have conducted the first formal analysis of the ecological and morphological traits associated with edible and poisonous mushrooms in North America and Europe. Poisonous mushrooms do not tend to be more colorful or aggregated than edible mushrooms, but they are more likely to exhibit distinctive odors even when phylogenetic relationships are accounted for. This raises the intriguing possibility that some poisonous species of mushrooms have evolved warning odors (and perhaps tastes) to enhance avoidance learning by fungivores.  相似文献

Virus-like particles (VLPs) are formed by the self-assembly of envelope and/or capsid proteins from many viruses. In many cases such VLPs have structural characteristics and antigenicity similar to the parental virus, and some have already proven successful as vaccines against the cognate virus infection. The structural components of some VLPs have also proven amenable to the insertion or fusion of foreign antigenic sequences, allowing the production of chimeric VLPs exposing the foreign antigen on their surface. Other VLPs have been used as carriers for foreign antigens, including non-protein antigens, via chemical conjugation. This review outlines some of the advantages, disadvantages, and technical considerations for the use of a wide range of VLP systems in vaccine development.  相似文献

The origin and evolution of sex is a great puzzle in biology, and meiosis is the core of sex. Here, we propose a new hypothesis that meiosis may have evolved by blending features of two responses that cells have to deal with double-strand-DNA breaks, recombinational repair and apoptosis. This hypothesis can explain some unsolved problems and is in agreement with some known molecular mechanisms, cytological phenomena, and the fossil records. Furthermore, it can predict some testable features of meiosis.  相似文献

Monolayers of DPPE and its N-methylated derivatives including DPPC have been investigated at 23 and 37 degrees C using a modified Langmuir-Wilhelmy surface balance. The monolayers have been subjected to dynamic compression and expansion, and some characteristics of the surfaces have been determined. The minimum surface tension attained by surfaces containing the lipids (maximum surface pressures sustained by the films) depended on the extent of methylation of the head group. Monolayers of DPPE or N-MeDPPE collapsed at surface tensions of 12-16 mN.m-1, whereas those containing N,N-diMeDPPE and DPPC could be compressed to near zero surface tension. The areas per molecule occupied by these lipids under high compression varied slightly and not systematically with head-group methylation. Monolayers containing mixtures of DPPC and DPPE were also studied under the same conditions. The monolayers showed some deviation from the behaviour expected if they were to have characteristics of ideally mixed systems. The minimum surface tensions attained suggested that monolayers containing 50 mol% or more DPPC might be further enriched during compression by some selective exclusion of the DPPE. At high surface pressures, some positive deviations in nominal areas per molecule from that expected for ideal mixing were observed in the monolayers made with 50 mol% or more DPPC. These deviations might be caused by packing disruptions associated with the explosion of lipid from the films.  相似文献

The successes of molecular developmental biology over the last ten years have been particularly impressive in those directions favored by its major paradigms. New technologies have both guided and been guided by the progress of the field. I review briefly some of the major insights into embryonic development that have derived from research in four specific areas: early embryogenesis of various forms; “pattern formation”; evolutionary conservation of regulatory elements; and spatial mechanisms of gene regulation. There remain many major problem areas, some of which may require new orientations to solve.  相似文献

There are many examples of organisms which, by new genetic construction or by finding themselves in new habitats, have established large populations. Some have changed ecosystems drastically, some slightly, some apparently scarcely at all as a result. In the light of these natural and unintentional experiments, protocols for the examination of proposals for genetic release can be derived. The risk of damage will be small, but the damage that could be caused is large. Because of the variety and subtlety of ecological interactions, some dangerous organisms will be passed as safe. Cellular antigens encoded by tumor viruses and some antigens encoded by cellular oncogenes offer advantages as targets for immunotherapy by being inextricably associated with the neoplastic phenotype. For example, monoclonal antibodies (MAb) specific for an antigen encoded by the neu oncogene have a direct inhibitory effect on proliferation of antigen-positive tumor cells. Many of the oncogene-encoded cell surface molecules are growth factor receptors, as are some tumor-associated differentiation antigens (TADAs). Therefore, it is not surprising that their level of cancer specificity is similar. There have been some promising findings from using TADAs as targets for various forms of immunotherapy, and one would expect the results to further improve by targeting to molecules that are more directly involved in cell proliferation and/or in maintaining the malignant state.  相似文献

The evolutionary relationships of the Hawaiian drosophilids have been studied by several molecular techniques. Immunological measurements have determined some of the distances between the major groups. More detailed studies have used protein polymorphism, DNA hybridization, DNA restriction enzyme analysis and DNA sequence studies of both nuclear and mitochondrial genomes. These studies indicate both the strengths and the weaknesses of the various methods and suggest new ways to examine phylogenetic relationships and question some of the accepted ph ylogenies.  相似文献

植物内生细菌已成为国内外的研究热点,目前已从植物中分离得到许多不同种属的植物内生细菌,其中有的具有促生与防治病害等对宿主植物有利的作用,而一些则具有潜在的致病性。研究人员利用多种方法对植物内生细菌的内生定殖行为进行研究,发现了有意义的定殖规律,例如,某种植物内生细菌对其宿主的侵染能力明显强于另一种内生细菌。目前,尽管植物内生细菌还有不少问题有待解决,但它在农业上的巨大应用潜力业已彰显。  相似文献

The positions of the 18S-5.8S-26S and 5S rRNA genes have been physically mapped on the chromosomes of diploid, tetraploid, and hexaploid Festuca species by in situ hybridization. The number and position of the rDNA sites in the species were compared. The results confirm some of the earlier phylogenetic studies of these species but suggest that some structural rearrangements have occurred and that sites have been lost during polyploidization. Lichens, algae and cyanobacteria have been detected growing endolithically in natural rock and in stone buildings in various countries of Australasia, Europe and Latin America. Previously these organisms had mainly been described in natural carbonaceous rocks in aquatic environments, with some reports in siliceous rocks, principally from extremophilic regions. Using various culture and microscopy methods, we have detected endoliths in siliceous stone, both natural and cut, in humid temperate and subtropical climates. Such endolithic growth leads to degradation of the stone structure, not only by mechanical means, but also by metabolites liberated by the cells. Using in vitro culture, transmission, optical and fluorescence microscopy, and confocal laser scanning microscopy, both coccoid and filamentous cyanobacteria and algae, including Cyanidiales, have been identified growing endolithically in the facades of historic buildings built from limestone, sandstone, granite, basalt and soapstone, as well as in some natural rocks. Numerically, the most abundant are small, single-celled, colonial cyanobacteria. These small phototrophs are difficult to detect by standard microscope techniques and some of these species have not been previously reported within stone.  相似文献

Experimental investigations of the antineoplastic effects of retinoids are reviewed in this paper. In vitro studies have shown that the hyperplastic and metaplastic response to chemical carcinogens of mouse prostate cultures is suppressed by the addition of retinoids to the culture medium, that retinoids can partially inhibit the morphologic transformation of 10T 1/2 cells by physical or chemical carcinogens, and that the growth of some non-neoplastic and some neoplastic cell lines can be inhibited by retinoids. In vivo studies have shown that retinoids can suppress papilloma and carcinoma development (the promotion phase) in the two-stage skin carcinogenesis assay, inhibit mammary and bladder carcinogenesis in mice and rats, and inhibit the growth of some transplantabletumor lines. So far it has not been possible to inhibit predictably tumour formation in the intestinal tract or the respiratory tract of rodents. Almost all the synthetic retinoids have a higher therapeutic index than the natural retinoids in the prevention or treatment of cancer.  相似文献

In the limited time at my disposal, it would be out of the question to attempt an exhaustive survey of the techniques used in testing compounds for the internal treatment of plant diseases, particularly as some of these tests will be considered by the later speakers. This talk will, in fact, be devoted largely to describing the test which we have developed at Long Ashton, and I will try to indicate some of the difficulties which we have encountered. Population surges and local extinctions are not uncommon among insects. In response to climatic changes in the past, insects have often shifted their ranges. This long-term range shifting and the vagaries of short-term weather makes reserve selection unrealistically rigid for many species. Although some insect species are surviving in reserves, others have disappeared from such small areas because of adverse weather. In contrast, many other insects depend on localized disturbance for survival. In response to anthropogenic disturbance, some native insects have become more abundant and widespread, such as Orthoptera in response to grazing and burning, and some Odonata in response to aquatic weeds and water impoundment. The effect of some exotic invasive insects on some native ecosystems is of major concern. Human-induced insect population crashes and species extinctions are becoming more common and widespread, and exacerbated by the synergistic effect of the various local impacts with global changes. A major insect population and species extinction discontinuity is beginning to take place. Yet, there is also an increase in range and abundance of some other insects. The world is becoming increasingly species-poorer and more homogenous in its insect fauna.  相似文献

Many macroalgae have significant spatial differentiation involving higher rate resource use at a site than of acquisition of that resource from the environment at that site. Long‐distance symplasmic transport of solutes occurs in some large green algae where the solutes are moved in streaming cytoplasm. In some large brown algae there is evidence of long‐distance symplasmic transport of organic C and other solutes. Structural and physiological data suggest that while the transport in ‘sieve tubes’ of Macrocystis might be by a Munch pressure flow mechanism the transport in many other brown algae is less likely to be by this mechanism. Less is known of long‐distance symplasmic transport in red algae. In terrestrial bryophytes transpiration occurs and in some liverworts and many mosses (but not in hornworts) there are files of dead cells in their tissues which may, and in some cases certainly, function in long‐distance apoplasmic water transport. The hydraulic conductivity of these conduits is poorly characterized. Long‐distance symplasmic transport in some mosses have been characterized both structurally and physiologically, but in other mosses and in liverworts the evidence is only structural. Most of these symplasmic transport pathways seem to have a high resistance to flow.  相似文献
