The study deals with phytoplankton biodiversity in mesotrophic Sartlan Lake, a large natural saline water body in the south of West Siberia. Two different approaches are used: floristic and ecological cenotic. The former is good for determining and analyzing the phytoplankton species composition. The latter gives a quantitative estimation of the phytoplankton biodiversity from the equation of information theory: $ H_b = - \sum\limits_{i = 1}^n {\frac{{B_i }} {B}\log _2 \frac{{B_i }} {B}} The study deals with phytoplankton biodiversity in mesotrophic Sartlan Lake, a large natural saline water body in the south of West Siberia. The latter gives a quantitative estimation of the phytoplankton biodiversity from the equation of information theory: , where H b is the biodiversity (bits); B i is the population biomass of the species i; B is the entire phytoplankton community biomass (mg/l). A reliable stable negative correlation exists between the phytoplankton biomass and species diversity. Analytical equations and a diagram are given to illustrate the correlation between these values. Planktonic members of most algal groups are known to harbor intracellular symbionts, including viruses, bacteria, fungi, and protozoa. Among the dinoflagellates, viral and bacterial associations were recognized a quarter century ago, yet their impact on host populations remains largely unresolved. By contrast, fungal and protozoan infections of dinoflagellates are well documented and generally viewed as playing major roles in host population dynamics. Our understanding of fungal parasites is largely based on studies for freshwater diatoms and dinoflagellates, although fungal infections are known for some marine phytoplankton. In freshwater systems, fungal chytrids have been linked to mass mortalities of host organisms, suppression or retardation of phytoplankton blooms, and selective effects on species composition leading to successional changes in plankton communities. Parasitic dinoflagellates of the genus Amoebophrya and the newly described Perkinsozoa, Parvilucifera infectans, are widely distributed in coastal waters of the world where they commonly infect photosynthetic and heterotrophic dinoflagellates. Recent work indicates that these parasites can have significant impacts on host physiology, behavior, and bloom dynamics. Thus, parasitism needs to be carefully considered in developing concepts about plankton dynamics and the flow of material in marine food webs.  相似文献

Although some study of the subject began in 1899, wide-ranging information from African water-bodies has only become available since 1950. Important developments included the establishment of long-term centres of research, the adoption of improved methods for quantitative algal sampling, the more intensive study of environmental conditions, the beginnings of experimental testing, and the improvement of taxonomic knowledge. At higher latitudes (> 20 °) examples of pronounced algal seasonality are long-established; they are accompanied and influenced by marked changes in radiant energy income and so water temperature, and often by effects of seasonal water input. Illustrations are given from lakes in Morocco and South Africa.More generally in Africa, including the tropical belt, annual patterns of phytoplankton seasonality are usually either dominated by hydrological features (water input-output) or by hydrographic ones (water-column structure and circulation). Examples of both types are discussed, together with instances (e.g. L. Volta) of combined hydrological and hydrographic regulation. In both the seasonal abundance of diatoms is often distinct and complementary to that of blue-green algae, with differing relationships to vertical mixing and water retention.Horizontal variability in the seasonal cycle is especially pronounced in the larger or morphometrically subdivided lakes. Some inshore-offshore differentiation is also known to affect phytoplankton quantity (e.g. L. George) and species composition (e.g. L. Victoria). Longitudinal differentiation is common in elongate basins especially when with a massive or seasonal inflow at one end (e.g. L. Turkana, L. Nubia, L. Volta); occasional terminal upwelling can also be influential (e.g. southern L. Tanganyika). Such examples grade into the longitudinally differentiated seasonality of flowing river-reservoir systems, as studied on the Blue and White Niles. The annual amplitude of population density, expressed in orders of magnitude (=log10 units), is one measure of seasonal variability. It can exceed 3 orders both in systems subject to hydrological wash-out (e.g. Nile reservoirs) and in the more variable species components of lakes of long retention (e.g. L. Victoria). Low amplitudes can be characteristic of some components (e.g. green algae in L. Victoria) or of total algal biomass (e.g. L. George, L. Sibaya).Seasonal changes may be subordinated to inter-annual ones, especially in shallow and hydrologically unstable lakes (e.g. L. Nakuru).  相似文献

Phytoplankton numbers, biovolume, chlorophyll-a and various physico-chemical characteristics were followed at weekly intervals in Mondsee, Austria during the year 1982. Secchi-disk transparency varied from 10 m in winter to 2 m in September. Prior to the onset of stratification phosphate-phosphorus concentration was 4 µg 1–1 decreasing to undetectable values thereafter. Nitrate-nitrogen dropped from 590 µg 1–1 to about 100 µg 1–1 during the same time. The vernal bloom was dominated by Asterionella formosa Hass. which abruptly declined after silicon depletion. Spring growth ceased in early June, when Tabellaria flocculosa (Lyngb.) Kütz var. asterionelloides Grun. dominated. Oscillatoria rubescens D.C. and Microcystis aeruginosa Kütz. dominated summer and early autumn followed by the chrysophyte Dinobryon divergens Imh. and D. sociale Ehr. which formed up to 69% of total biovolume in October. Thereafter diatoms and Cryptophyceae (Rhodomonas lacustris Pascher and Ruttner, Cryptomonas pusilla Bach.) became abundant again.Maximum chlorophyll-a concentration in the epilimnion (16 µg 1–1) was reached during spring growth of the diatoms. During summer higher chlorophyll-a levels were always associated with the metalimnetic layer of Oscillatoria.Compared with earlier studies, both the total biovolume and the share of Oscillatoria rubescens significantly decreased because of reduced nutrient loading of the lake and wash-out of Oscillatoria (theor. renewal time of the lake: 1.7 years).  相似文献

The reasons for annual variability in the composition of phytoplankton assemblages are poorly understood but may include competition for resources and allelopathic interactions. We show that domination by the patch-forming dinoflagellate, Peridinium gatunense, or, alternatively, a bloom of a toxic cyanobacterium, Microcystis sp., in the Sea of Galilee may be accounted for by mutual density-dependent allelopathic interactions. Over the last 11 years, the abundance of these species in the lake displayed strong negative correlation. Laboratory experiments showed reciprocal, density-dependent, but nutrient-independent, inhibition of growth. Application of spent P. gatunense medium induced sedimentation and, subsequently, massive lysis of Microcystis cells within 24 hr, and sedimentation and lysis were concomitant with a large rise in the level of McyB, which is involved in toxin biosynthesis by Microcystis. P. gatunense responded to the presence of Microcystis by a species-specific pathway that involved a biphasic oxidative burst and activation of certain protein kinases. Blocking this recognition by MAP-kinase inhibitors abolished the biphasic oxidative burst and affected the fate (death or cell division) of the P. gatunense cells. We propose that patchy growth habits may confer enhanced defense capabilities, providing ecological advantages that compensate for the aggravated limitation of resources in the patch. Cross-talk via allelochemicals may explain the phytoplankton assemblage in the Sea of Galilee.  相似文献

This study, carried out in Shatt Al-Arab river near Basrah, Iraq, reports a close negative (inverse) relation between phytoplankton numbers and decomposing fungi belonging to the family Saprolegniaceae (Oomycetes). This relation seems to depend on substrate relationship and antagonism. In addition the role of other physico-chemical factors, pH, temperature and salinity has been discussed.  相似文献

A characteristic vertical sequence of phytoplankton populationswas observed below the metalimnetic oxycline of a stratified, mesotrophic lake. Ceratium spp., Closterium acutum and Aphanizomenonflos- aquae were present in the epilimnion but had distinctpopulation maxima in the microaerobic chemocline. Below thesepopulations, Cryptomonas phaseolus, Planktothrix clathrata,Pseudanabaena catenata and Limnothrix sp. followed each otherin the transition zone between the chemocline and the sulphide-containinghypolimnion. The dominating populations of P. clathrata andP. catenata caused a deep chlorophyll maximum. Phytoplanktonstructure was determined by the vertical gradients of sulphideand light. Compared with the epilimnion, nutrient availabilitywas not fundamentally better below the oxycline but the algaemight have benefited from reduced grazing pressure in theirhabitat.  相似文献

The vertical distributions of bacteria, picoalgae, protozoan and metazoan zooplankton, and phytoplanktonin the highly eutrophic Lake Köyliönjärvi(SW Finland) were studied monthly during the period ofice-cover in January-April 1996. For comparison, wealso provide some data on the distributions of theplankton during the summer. The whole watercolumn remained oxic during the ice-covered period, although the near-bottom oxygen concentrations werealways very low. The heterotrophic nanoflagellateswere more abundant in winter than in summer, butciliates, picoalgae and bacteria were more numerous insummer. In general both zooplankton and phytoplanktonhad low biomass during the ice-covered period. However, the biomass of the diatom Aulacoseiraislandica ssp. islandica was high under the icein April. The calanoid copepod Eudiaptomusgraciloides was the dominant zooplankton species fromJanuary to March, but had almost disappeared by thebeginning of April and did not increase again until inJune. The dominant rotifer species in winterwere Keratella cochlearis, Filinia terminalis, and Filinia longiseta in the surface water andRotaria neptunia near the bottom.  相似文献

Phytoplankton in the small central Finnish lake, Vasikkalampi, was studied over a two-year period by weekly sampling simultaneously with monitoring of physical and chemical properties of water, solar radiation energy and zooplankton. In the present paper, the fluctuations in phytoplankton diversity were studied in relation to environmental factors. The special aim for the study was to detect a relation between environmental disturbances and phytoplankton diversity.  相似文献

The seasonality of primary productivity by phytoplankton in relation to physico-chemical and biological variables was studied in Lake Hora-Kilole from August 2007 to May 2008. In 1989, the Mojo River was temporarily diverted to flow into the lake, which substantially changed its physico-chemical conditions and the composition of the phytoplankton. Primary productivity was controlled primarily by soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), ammonia (NH3), temperature and euphotic depth (Zeu). The light-saturated rate of photosynthesis (Amax) varied from 370 to 3 843?mg O2 m?3 h?1 with the maximum value corresponding to the seasonal maximum of phytoplankton biomass. Compared to the period before the diversion of the river, Amax was reduced by more than ninety-fold in early 1990s and by less than five-fold in 2007 and 2008. Similarly, average phytoplankton chlorophyll a was reduced by more than 2.5 × in the early 1990s and to less than 50% in 2007 and 2008. This highlights the importance of the diversion river water on the physico-chemical and biological environment of the lake.  相似文献

  • 1 The C:P ratios of seston, bacteria, phytoplankton and zooplankton were measured twice a week in situ in mesotrophic, large and deep Lake Constance from April to December 1995. Except for zooplankton, a strong seasonality was exhibited with low C:P ratios during P‐enriched early spring conditions and high values during P‐depleted summer conditions.
  • 2 Molar C:P ratios of seston varied between 180:1 and 460:1 demonstrating moderate phosphorus limitation in spring and during the clear‐water phase, and strong limitation for the rest of the season. The sestonic C:P ratio increased significantly during two decades of re‐oligotrophication of Lake Constance, reflecting an enhanced phosphorus limitation of the plankton community in summer. Molar C:P ratios of bacteria and phytoplankton varied seasonally between 50:1 and 130:1 and 180:1 and 500:1, respectively, and indicate carbon or light limitation in winter and phosphorus limitation in summer. Zooplankton had a molar C:P ratio of about 124:115 which was nearly constant throughout the seasons.
  • 3 These differences in the C:P ratios of planktonic organisms have direct implications for phosphorus recycling within the food web as C:P ratios of excreta should be highly variable.

Abstract

The work was carried out during 1995 in a quarry-lake and 13 samplings were performed to gather data on the aquatic flora. Sampling locations both along the shores and in the water provided data to define the position and the amount of covering by macrophytes. As regards the microphytes, considered as the sole phytoplankton component, the composition and the seasonal abundance were evaluated.  相似文献

Lakes from Maritime Antarctica are regarded as systems generally inhabited by metazoan plankton capable of imposing a top-down control on the phytoplankton during short periods, while lakes from Continental Antarctica lacking these communities would be typically controlled by scarcity of nutrients, following a bottom-up model. Otero Lake is a highly eutrophic small lake located on the NW of the Antarctic Peninsula, which has no metazoan plankton. During summer 1996, we studied the density, composition and vertical distribution of the phytoplankton community of this lake with respect to various abiotic variables, yet our results demonstrated neither light nor nutrient limitation of the phytoplankton biomass. Densities of heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNAN) and ciliates from three different size categories were also studied. Extremely low densities of HNAN (0–155 ind. ml–1) could be due to feeding competition by bacterivore nanociliates and/or predation by large ciliates. A summer bloom of the phytoflagellate Chlamydomonas aff. celerrima Pascher reached densities tenfold those of previous years (158.103 ind. ml–1), though apparently curtailed by a strong peak of large ciliates (107 ind. ml–1) which would heavily graze on PNAN (phototrophic nanoflagellates). Top-down control can thus occur in this lake during short periods of long hydrologic residence time.  相似文献

The vertical distributions and migrations are described of the most abundant flagellated phytoplankton species from the summer community of a small forest lake in southern Finland. The lake showed a steep and stable thermal stratification with a shallow oxygenated epilimnion. Horizontal variation of phytoplankton distribution within the lake was tested on two scales and found to be statistically significant only in the case of Mallomonas reginae. The vertical distribution of flagellated phytoplankton was assessed by reference to the distribution of a non-motile, neutrally buoyant species Ankyra judayi. Statistically significant, active vertical positioning was demonstrated for all the flagellates examined with the exception of Spiniferomonas bourrellyi. Diel vertical migrations were apparent for all species showing active positioning and the pattern of an evening descent and a morning ascent was ubiquitous. The extent and timing of diel migrations varied between species. The most extensive migrations were by Cryptomonas marssonii which crossed a temperature gradient of 14 °C and penetrated far into the anoxic hypolimnion. Several categories of competitive advantage can be gained by species undertaking such diel vertical migrations.  相似文献

Photosynthetic activity by phytoplankton was measured during the ice-free seasons of 1984, 1985 and 1987 using the 14C radioassay in high altitude Emerald Lake (California). Relative quantum yield (B) and light-saturated chlorophyll-specific carbon uptake (Pm B) were calculated from the relationship of light and photosynthesis fitted to a hyperbolic tangent function. Temporal changes in Pm B showed no regular pattern. Seasonal patterns of B generally had peaks in the summer and autumn. Phytoplankton biomass (as measured by chlorophyll a) and light-saturated carbon uptake (Pm) had peaks in the summer and autumn which were associated with vertical mixing. Estimates of mean daily carbon production were similar among the three years: 57 mg C m–2 2 d–1 in 1984, 70 mg C m–2 2 d–1 in 1985 and 60 mg C m–2 d–1 in 1987. Primary productivity in Emerald Lake is low compared to other montane lakes of California and similar to high-altitude or high-latitude lakes in other regions.  相似文献

The validity of Connell's intermediate disturbance hypothesis in phytoplankton communities was tested on data from a hypertrophic, shallow lake, Hjarbæk Fjord, Denmark. The present data from Hjarbæk Fjord demonstrate the difficulties in distinguishing stress from disturbance in a phytoplankton community, and show that great changes in the phytoplankton community can take place within few days.A collapse of blue-green algae in late June 1986 caused remineralization of nutrients and resulted in a rapid increase of fast-growing small chlorococcal green algae and phytoplankton species diversity, without any external disturbances acting on the lake. External disturbances in the form of wind action and brackish water intrusion occurred several days after the onset of these events. Carbon depletion and pH 11.0 were severe stress factors on the phytoplankton community. They were induced by calm, warm weather, but eventually acted as a kind of disturbance to the normally well circulated lake.  相似文献

Data on some relevant environmental variables and phytoplankton species composition, collected from the hypertrophic shallow lake Albufera of Valencia (Spain) during 1980–88, were examined using Redundancy Analysis (RDA). The hydrological cycle of the lake is manipulated for rice cultivation in the area. Seasonality and the particular hydrological cycle of the lake were the principal factors influencing long-term phytoplankton dynamics. Annual or horizontal differences were less important than the seasonal factor. However, a trend of phosphate increase and underwater illumination decrease was observed between 1980 and 1988. These changes might be related to some species year-to-year variations, although in general interannual phytoplankton changes were scarce. Spatial phytoplankton differences were much smaller than physical and chemical differences, which were mainly related to loading and residence times at the different sampling zones. Shallowness, hypertrophy and the regular hydrological cycle of the Albufera for rice yield, seem to contribute to the maintenance of an almost stable and homogeneous algal community, mainly composed of filamentous cyanophytes. RDA analysis has proved to be an efficient method in yielding valuable information on phytoplankton-environment interactions and trends over a long series of data. It seems also a feasible technique to monitor the results of lake management and restoration in the future.  相似文献

1. Patterns in phytoplankton diversity in lakes and their relationships with environmental gradients have been traditionally based on taxonomic analyses and indices, even though measures of functional diversity (FD) might be expected to be more responsive to such gradients. 2. We assessed the influence of water column physical structure, and other components of the overall environment, on lake phytoplankton diversity using two taxonomically based indices [species richness (S) and the Shannon index (H’)] and a FD index, to determine whether these different measures respond in similar ways to habitat structure. The study encompassed 45 lakes in Eastern Canada, within two lake districts [the Eastern Townships Region (ETR) and Laurentians Region (LR)] that vary in geology and landscape and in lake morphometry and chemistry. 3. Across all lakes, S and H’ were higher in lakes having greater vertical temperature heterogeneity and higher susceptibility to wind mixing. In addition, H’ declined with total phosphorus concentration. FD was only related to maximum lake depth, a variable that integrates many other habitat features. 4. Further insight into the factors affecting phytoplankton diversity was obtained by contrasting the two regions. The taxonomically based diversity measures differed little between the regions, while FD was higher in the ETR where more trait variants were present and more evenly distributed amongst species. Whereas factors driving S did not differ between the regions, we found region‐dependent patterns in the relationships of H’ and FD with maximum lake depth: both indices decreased with maximum depth in the region with lakes more exposed to wind (ETR) but increased in the more hilly landscape where lakes are more sheltered from wind mixing (LR). 5. Our study demonstrates that, for phytoplankton communities, a FD index can show simpler and stronger responses to environmental drivers than a taxonomically based index, while shedding further light onto the functional traits that are important in particular lake categories.  相似文献

Grazing effects were evaluated by comparisons between phytoplankton populations in the lake water and in bicompartmental chambers, deployedin situ in a Newfoundland lake. Micrograzing effects were evaluated separately from both the physical effects of macrograzers and the chemical effects of macrograzer metabolites on phytoplankton assemblages in bicompartmental chambers. Macrograzer metabolites were able to pass through fine gauze between the compartments. Thus, the chemical effects of the macrograzers were observed in one compartment while the physical effects were the dominant treatment in the other. Micrograzer effects were investigated in chambers without added macrograzers.Densities of some of the desmid species were depressed by the physical effects of macrograzers. This is the first ecological study to demonstrate such a grazing effect on desmids. Some individual taxa, such asArthrodesmus triangularis var.rotundatus (Raciborski)comb. nov., andMesotaenium sp. Nägeli (Zygnemaphyceae), were augmented under the chemical effects of macrograzer metabolites. Evidence suggests that the desmids were not micrograzed. Grazing effects on desmids have not previously been studied in waters in which they were abundant. The Chlorophyceae, which were small species in Hogan's pond, and the microflagellates generally maintained their overall population densities in spite of the presence of macrograzers, however, abundances of some individual species within the assemblages changed in the presence of macrograzers. Micrograzers may also affect the species composition and abundance of the individual chlorophycean taxa. With the exceptions ofSynedra sp. Ehrenberg andTabellaria fenestrata var.lacustris Meister the diatoms were unaffected by the grazers. The Chrysophyceae were little affected by micrograzing and physical effects of macrograzers, in contrast to chemical effects of macrograzer metabolites that were evident for individual species.Several of the Cyanobacteria (Cyanophyceae) were augmented in the presence of micrograzers. Evidence indicates that they were not micrograzed. Some individual species, e.g.,Microcystis aeruginosa Kützing, were augmented by both physical and chemical effects of macrograzers.  相似文献

Plants that produce dust seeds can recruit fungi to meet their earliest requirements for carbon and other nutrients. This germination strategy, termed initial mycoheterotrophy, has been well investigated among the orchid family, but there are numerous other plant lineages that have independently evolved mycoheterotrophic germination strategies. One of these lineages is the tribe Pyroleae (Ericaceae). While the fungi associated with mature plants in Pyroleae have been fairly well documented, their mycobionts at the germination and seedling stages are largely unknown. Here, we use an in situ seed baiting experiment along with molecular fingerprinting techniques and phylogenetic tests to identify the fungi associated with seedlings of two Pyroleae species, Pyrola chlorantha and Orthilia secunda. Our results indicate that similar to adult plants, Pyroleae seedlings can associate with a suite of ectomycorrhizal fungi. Some seedlings harboured single mycobionts, while others may have been inhabited by multiple fungi. The dominant seedling mycobiont of both Pyroleae species was a fungus of unknown trophic status in the order Sebacinales. This taxon was also the only one shared among seedlings of both investigated Pyroleae species. We discuss these results juxtaposed to orchids and one additional Pyrola species in the context of ontogenetic shifts in fungal host specificity for mycoheterotrophic nutrition.  相似文献
