According to the boundary concept of Hartmann (1991), the occurence of nightmares was repeatedly shown to be correlated to thin personal boundaries. The present study investigated the relationship between boundary thinness and emotional, cognitive, and behavioral consequences of nightmares in frequent nightmare sufferers. Occurence of nightmares and their respective consequences were recorded daily during a 4-week period by diaries and questionnaires. Confirming previous results, frequent nightmare sufferers had significantly thinner personal boundaries than occasional nightmare sufferers, and nightmare frequency was positively correlated to boundary thinness. In frequent nightmare sufferers, the emotional and cognitive consequences of a nightmare as well as its possible explanations were correlated to boundary thinness; mainly the personal total score and the Boundary Questionnaire scales sleep/wake/dreams, thoughts/feelings/mood and sensitivity. The results indicate that although nightmare frequency is positively correlated to thin personal boundaries, only particular aspects of the concept of personal boundaries are correlated to emotional and cognitive consequences of the nightmares.  相似文献

Genital herpes and personality   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Genital herpes, while having gained considerable attention as an important psychosexual disease, is not well understood. Precisely what factors trigger infectious reactivation is an important question that has yet to be answered. The present study investigated the relationship between recurrent genital herpes and personality. High and low recurrers were administered a demographic and disease history questionnaire and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI). Results revealed that, compared to low recurrers, the mean MMPI profile of high recurrers showed significantly greater elevations on nine of ten scales. The degree and pattern of elevation in the high profile is consistent with increased levels of autonomic arousal and stress. These findings are interpreted as suggestive of the possible role of personality in influencing the rate of infectious recurrence in genital herpes sufferers. The implications for psychologically based treatment strategies are discussed.  相似文献

Fifty-eight male subjects admitted to an intensive coronary care unit were interviewed and underwent psychometric testing on the second--third day after a severe heart attack (infarct). Seven-ten days following admission, the clinical condition of the patients was evaluated by the attending cardiological staff and rated on a three point scale. The patients were divided, on the basis of the clinical rating, into two groups: improved (N = 25) and non-improved (N = 33). Life history characteristics, MMPI personality profiles, and State-Trait anxiety scores were then compared for the two groups. The not-improved group showed the higher scores on almost all the MMPI scales, higher anxiety scores and more work-related problems than the improved group. Such data give some empirical support to the hypothesis that the physiological and hemodynamical conditon of the cardiac patient is in some way correlated with the patient's style of coping with stress, and his history of previous life stress situations.  相似文献

Various personality and psychopathology traits are associated with nightmare frequency. This study investigated whether trait variables might also account for individual differences in the longitudinal relationship between daily mood and nightmare incidence each night. Forty-two participants (35 women, 7 men; mean age = 40.10 years) reported having nightmares at least once per month and completed a 14-day dream and mood (anxiety and depression) log. Within-subject correlations between state anxiety and nightmare incidence or absence the following night and between state depression and nightmare incidence or absence were computed. None of the trait measures had significant correlations with these within-subject correlations. However, when only participants scoring above the group median on Hartman’s thin boundariness were analyzed, thin boundariness, Symptom Checklist—Global Severity, adverse life events, and childhood adversity were associated with the incidence of nightmares as a function of state anxiety or depression on a night-by-night basis, with correlation coefficients between .43 and .52. This supports the hypothesis of trait predispositions for a nightmare reaction to daily state anxiety or depression. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

This study investigated the use of biofeedback and relaxation training on six patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) referred routinely for biofeedback treatment in a VA medical center. Subjects received between 8 and 14 sessions of training overall, as well as concurrent individual and group therapy. Measures used to assess treatment outcome include pre- and posttreatment MMPI, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory, and Multidimensional Health Locus of Control scores, as well as electromyographic and subjective measures of tension within each session. Additionally, an overall posttreatment clinical rating of change and 1- to 2-year follow-up data were obtained for each subject. Slight to marked improvements were demonstrated for each subject, as evidenced by improvements on the State Anxiety Inventory Scale and the Beck Depression Inventory, a decrease in overall MMPI scores, and lowered EMG and subjective tension ratings for all participants. Possible alternative explanations for improvement (situational demand characteristics, regression toward the mean, lack of independent subject evaluation) are described, along with other study limitations. This preliminary investigation suggests that the use of relaxation training and biofeedback may be a particularly useful component within a comprehensive treatment program for this disorder.  相似文献

Factors affecting or inducing nightmares have been investigated repeatedly. However, little research is carried out on the behavioral consequences of nightmares. The present study thus served to investigate behavioral effects of nightmares in correlation to personality variables. 41 non-clinical participants, who suffer from about 2 nightmares per month recorded their dreams and nightmares over a 4-week period. A nightmare was defined as a dream that frightens the dreamer and could be recalled in detail on awakening. Anxiety and mood were monitored every morning. All nightmares and their behavioral consequences were noted on a questionnaire. Personality traits and life events were assessed at the beginning of the investigation. 100 nightmares were reported by the subjects over the 4-week period (range: 0–8). Following a nightmare, the subjects were significantly more anxious and were of a less stable mental condition compared to nights without nightmares. Additionally, nightmares induced physical complaints. This was considered to be an indicator that something was wrong in their lives and induced them to solve personal problems. The behavioral effects were most pronounced in subjects scoring high on neuroticism and on the number of physical complaints and low on achievement orientation and openness. The results suggest that sufferers of nightmares intend to change their lives, especially those with a neurotic-like personality.  相似文献

Broad-spectrum matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) inhibitors (MMPI) were unsuccessful in cancer clinical trials, partly due to side effects resulting from limited knowledge of the full repertoire of MMP substrates, termed the substrate degradome, and hence the in vivo functions of MMPs. To gain further insight into the degradome of MMP-14 (membrane type 1 MMP) an MMPI, prinomastat (drug code AG3340), was used to reduce proteolytic processing and ectodomain shedding in human MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells transfected with MMP-14. We report a quantitative proteomic evaluation of the targets and effects of the inhibitor in this cell-based system. Proteins in cell-conditioned medium (the secretome) and membrane fractions with levels that were modulated by the MMPI were identified by isotope-coded affinity tag (ICAT) labeling and tandem mass spectrometry. Comparisons of the expression of MMP-14 with that of a vector control resulted in increased MMP-14/vector ICAT ratios for many proteins in conditioned medium, indicating MMP-14-mediated ectodomain shedding. Following MMPI treatment, the MMPI/vehicle ICAT ratio was reversed, suggesting that MMP-14-mediated shedding of these proteins was blocked by the inhibitor. The reduction in shedding or the release of substrates from pericellular sites in the presence of the MMPI was frequently accompanied by the accumulation of the protein in the plasma membrane, as indicated by high MMPI/vehicle ICAT ratios. Considered together, this is a strong predictor of biologically relevant substrates cleaved in the cellular context that led to the identification of many undescribed MMP-14 substrates, 20 of which we validated biochemically, including DJ-1, galectin-1, Hsp90alpha, pentraxin 3, progranulin, Cyr61, peptidyl-prolyl cis-trans isomerase A, and dickkopf-1. Other proteins with altered levels, such as Kunitz-type protease inhibitor 1 and beta-2-microglobulin, were not substrates in biochemical assays, suggesting an indirect affect of the MMPI, which might be important in drug development as biomarkers or, in preclinical phases, to predict systemic drug actions and adverse side effects. Hence, this approach describes the dynamic pattern of cell membrane ectodomain shedding and its perturbation upon metalloproteinase drug treatment.  相似文献

Background

The psychological aspects of treatment-resistant and remitted depression are not well documented.

Methods

We administered the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) to patients with treatment-resistant depression (n = 34), remitted depression (n = 25), acute depression (n = 21), and healthy controls (n = 64). Pessimism and optimism were also evaluated by MMPI.

Results

ANOVA and post-hoc tests demonstrated that patients with treatment-resistant and acute depression showed similarly high scores for frequent scale (F), hypochondriasis, depression, conversion hysteria, psychopathic device, paranoia, psychasthenia and schizophrenia on the MMPI compared with normal controls. Patients with treatment-resistant depression, but not acute depression registered high on the scale for cannot say answer. Using Student''s t-test, patients with remitted depression registered higher on depression and social introversion scales, compared with normal controls. For pessimism and optimism, patients with treatment-resistant depression demonstrated similar changes to acutely depressed patients. Remitted depression patients showed lower optimism than normal controls by Student''s t-test, even though these patients were deemed recovered from depression using HAM-D.

Conclusions

The patients with remitted depression and treatment-resistant depression showed subtle alterations on the MMPI, which may explain the hidden psychological features in these cohorts.  相似文献

This report presents findings for the Intrinsic (IR) and Extrinsic (ER) religiousness scales from the Minnesota Study of Twins Reared Apart. The scales were shown to be internally consistent, sufficiently distinct from the scales of the California Psychological Inventory and the Multidimensional Personality Questionnaire and unrelated to a number of measures of response style to justify treating them as distinct traits. The I scales also showed considerable evidence of construct validity in its correlations with religious fundamentalism and authoritarianism as assessed by the MMPI and Altemeyer's Right-Wing Authoritarianism scale. Data on IR and ER from 35 pairs of monozygotic twins reared apart (MZA) and 37 pairs of dizygotic twins reared apart (DZA) were fitted to a biometric model and demonstrated significant heritability (0.43 and 0.39), with a model containing genetic plus environmental factors fitting significantly better than a model containing only an environmental component. Twin similarity could not be explained by placement on a self-reported measure of family Moral Religious Emphasis as measured by the Family Environment Scale.  相似文献

This study analyzes the relationships among nightmare frequency, nightmare distress, and interference due to nightmares, sleep quality, psychopathology (anxiety and depression), and personality (neuroticism, psychoticism, and boundaries). The nightmare parameters were evaluated with the Nightmare Frequency Questionnaire (B. Krakow et al., 2000; see also record 2000-16731-002), the Nightmare Distress Questionnaire (K. Belicki, 1992b; see also record 1993-08389-001), and the Nightmare Effects Survey (Krakow et al., 2000). The sample was composed of 147 healthy students. The results demonstrated that the 2 measurements of distress (subjective distress associated with nightmares and, especially, deterioration of psychosocial functioning) were the dimensions that best related to the variables studied, although the relationships were modulated by nightmare frequency. The parameter of nightmare frequency was found to be useful as an indicator of certain personality characteristics rather than psychological perturbation. Having nightmares on a weekly basis was strongly associated with depressed mood. The knowledge about these relations is relevant not only theoretically but also as a practical guide. Neutrophils are considered to play a central role in ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI). However, the pulmonary consequences of neutrophil accumulation have not been fully elucidated. Matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) had been postulated to participate in neutrophil transmigration. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of MMP-9 in the neutrophilic inflammation of VILI. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into three groups: 1) low tidal volume (LVT), 7 ml/kg of tidal volume (VT); 2) high tidal volume (HVT), 30 ml/kg of VT; and 3) HVT with MMP inhibitor (HVT+MMPI). As a MMPI, CMT-3 was administered daily from 3 days before mechanical ventilation. Degree of VILI was assessed by wet-to-dry weight ratio and acute lung injury (ALI) scores. Neutrophilic inflammation was determined from the neutrophil count in the lung tissue and myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF). MMP-9 expression and activity were examined by immunohistochemical staining and gelatinase zymography, respectively. The wet-to-dry weight ratio, ALI score, neutrophil infiltration, and MPO activity were increased significantly in the HVT group. However, in the HVT+MMPI group, pretreatment with MMPI decreased significantly the degree of VILI, as well as neutrophil infiltration and MPO activity. These changes correlated significantly with MMP-9 immunoreactivity and MMP-9 activity. Most outcomes were significantly worse in the HVT+MMPI group compared with the LVT group. In conclusion, VILI mediated by neutrophilic inflammation is closely related to MMP-9 expression and activity. The inhibition of MMP-9 protects against the development of VILI through the downregulation of neutrophil-mediated inflammation.  相似文献

We studied a number of EEG parameters and indices of personality characteristics (evaluated with the use of the MMPI questionnaire) in sixty 44- to 73-year-old patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). According to the intensity of the symptoms, they were classified into groups 1 and 2, with an initial or moderate level of disease manifestation. In group-2 patients, the powers of the - and -range rhythms were greater, as compared with those in group 1. This was combined with higher indices in scales 2 (depression, D), 8 (individualism, Sc), and 0 (introversion/extraversion, Si). A clear correlations between the EEG parameters and indices of personality structure were found. There were positive correlations between the normalized power of 2-rhythm and values of a few MMPI scales: 1 (supercontrol, Hs), 2 (depression, D), 4 (impulsivity, Pd), 7 (anxiety, Pt), 8 (individualism, Sc), and 0 (introversion/extraversion, Si). We also found negative correlations between the frequency of -rhythm and indices of supercontrol and anxiety scales. Correlations between different EEG parameters and MMPI scale indices depended on the level of disease manifestation. Our results allow us to assume a certain generality of the neurophysiological mechanisms determining modifications of the integral electrical activity of the brain and formation of individual psychological characteristics in parkinsonian patients.  相似文献

The present study investigated the relationship between both state and global measures of phenomenal qualities of nightmare experience and nightmare prevalence as measured prospectively by dream logs. Sixty three frequent nightmare individuals and 53 controls completed a retrospective measure of their sleep and dreaming processes and kept a dreaming and nightmare log for 21 consecutive nights. Nightmare prevalence was unrelated to all three state-based rating dimensions including a concurrent rating of how distressing the actual nightmare was but was significantly associated with a global measure of nightmare distress. Similarly, global ratings of dream and nightmare saliency showed greater predictive validity than ratings of the same dimensions rated concurrently. The results suggest that whether a person reports having a nightmare on any given night is more associated with how they view their global dreaming processes than with the phenomenal qualities of the actual nightmare itself.  相似文献

Increasing evidence supports the clinical view that alexithymia is associated with disturbed dreaming. However, a consistent, replicable pattern of relationships between alexithymia and different dreaming components has not yet been identified. Groups of sleep-disordered outpatients (N = 580; 46.0 ± 13.2 years) and nonclinical controls (N = 145; 22.9 ± 4.2 years) were administered the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) and a 14-item Dreaming Questionnaire. Sleep diagnoses were assessed from polysomnography and clinical histories following the American Academy of Sleep Medicine classification system. The Dreaming Questionnaire was reduced by principal-components analysis to a 3-factor solution that distinguishes nightmare distress, dream recall, and dream meaning items. Factor coefficients were correlated with TAS total score and TAS subscales while age was controlled as a covariate. TAS total score was found to correlate positively with nightmare distress and negatively with dream recall for both clinical and nonclinical groups and for both men and women considered separately. TAS total score also correlated negatively with dream meaning for nonclinical participants. TAS subscales were differentially correlated with the 3 dream factors: difficulty identifying feelings (DIF) with increased nightmare distress, difficulty describing feelings (DDF) with decreased dream recall and externally oriented thinking (EOT) with decreased dream meaning. With some exceptions, these patterns were obtained independently for clinical and nonclinical groups and for men and women within these groups. Findings suggest a consistent and replicable pattern of relationships between alexithymia and dreaming components that implicates processes regulating emotion during both wakefulness and dreaming, for example, affect distress, expressive anxiety, and openness to experience. Often the question arises whether TV viewing or playing computer games, especially those of violent and aggressive content, has negative effects on children's sleep patterns and dreaming. Empirical data on this topic, however, are scarce. Two hundred fifty-two schoolchildren (range: 9 to 13 years) completed a questionnaire about media use and nightmares. The findings indicates that interindividual differences in nightmare frequency were not explained by interindividual differences in TV viewing or computer game playing habits. In addition, no effect of the TV films the evening before completing the questionnaire on the dreams the subsequent night could be demonstrated. Since the approach could not rule out an effect of media use habits on nightmares, the next step will be a longitudinal study eliciting the media use habits and the occurrence of nightmares by applying self-rated scales as well as information obtained by parents. This study examined the psychometric properties of an Argentine Version of the Morningness Composite (CS) and the Early/Late Preference (PS) Scales. During summer (long photoperiod in Argentina), 304 subjects (69.1% women; mean age=33.64 yrs, SD=14 yrs) completed the scales for the first time. In winter (short photoperiod), 100 of the same individuals (71% women; mean age=37.17 yrs, SD=14.63 yrs) were retested. The total scores ranged within the values reported by previous studies and were independent of gender. Older subjects showed higher morningness scores. The internal consistencies were good (CS=0.86, PS=0.82). Item 7 from the CS and items 7 and 9 from the PS showed low item-scale correlation. Factor analysis produced a three-factor solution for both scales. However, the inconsistency of the evening items suggests that the single-solution may be more acceptable. Test-retest correlations were satisfactory (CS=0.88, PS=0.78), but the two-related-sample test revealed significant differences between test and retest scores, suggesting relative temporal stabilities. Both scales presented similar and acceptable psychometric properties and good correlation, indicating construct validity.  相似文献

Psychophysiological parameters of affective disorders (depression, depersonalization, and alexithymia) were studied in patients who had suffered ischemic stoke. Significant differences from healthy subjects were observed for certain MMPI scores and EEG, neurophysiological, and neuroimaging parameters. The results provide a basis for better understanding of brain function in healthy people and patients with dysfunction of higher cognitive processes.  相似文献

Retrospective estimates of nightmare frequency for a sample of 23,990 respondents to an Internet questionnaire (female: N = 19,367, mean age = 24.9 ± 10.14 years; male: N = 4,623; mean age = 25.5 ± 10.81) were evaluated as a function of age, gender, and pre- versus post-September 11, 2001. Female respondents reported more frequent monthly nightmares (4.44 ± 6.71) than did male respondents (3.39 ± 6.07), and this result was seen for all age strata younger than 60. Also, for female respondents, nightmare frequency increased from ages 10-19 to 20-39 then decreased monotonically to ages 50-59. For male respondents, nightmare frequency was stable from ages 10-19 to 30-39 then decreased to ages 50-59. An increase in nightmare frequency was observed post-September 11 only for male respondents-particularly for 10- to 29-year-olds. This increase was sustained 2 years later. These effects were maintained when dream recall was held constant. Results replicate, in a single sample, previously published gender and age effects and provide new evidence that the nightmares of males may be differentially sensitive to traumatic events for which victims and/or perpetrators are primarily male.
