Apomixis and polyploidy have been important in the evolution of the angiosperms, and sporophytic apomixis has been associated with polyembryony and polyploidy in tropical floras. We studied the occurrence of polyembryony in populations of tetraploid Anemopaegma acutifolium, A. arvense and A. glaucum from the Brazilian cerrados, and histological features of sexual and apomictic processes were investigated in A. acutifolium. All populations and species were polyembryonic (68.9–98.4% of seeds). Normal double fertilization occurred in most ovules, with exceptions being that 3% of ovules were penetrated but not fertilized and in 4% of ovules both synergids were penetrated. The penetration of both synergids suggests a continuous attraction of pollen tubes and polyspermy. Adventitious embryo precursor cells (AEPs) arose from nucellar and integumental cells of the ovule in pollinated and unpollinated A. acutifolium, indicating sporophytic apomixis. However, further embryo and endosperm development required pollination and fertilization. This pseudogamy also allows concurrent sexual embryo development. Similar polyembryony rates and polyploidy indicated that A. arvense and A. glaucum are also apomictic, forming an agamic complex similar to that observed for some species of confamilial, but not closely related Handroanthus. The co‐occurrence of apomixis and polyploidy in different groups of Bignoniaceae indicates homoplasious origin of these agamic complexes. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2013, 173 , 77–91.  相似文献

Isolated ovules occur in many fossil plant assemblages, where they provide important insights into seed‐plant diversity and evolution. However, in many cases, the ovules cannot be attributed to individual groups of seed plants, restricting systematic and evolutionary assessments that can be made from otherwise well‐characterized fossil taxa. In the present paper, we describe a new kind of ovule discovered in tuffaceous sediments from the Permian‐aged Xuanwei Formation in Guizhou Province, China. This ovule has 180° rotational symmetry and an integument comprising a variably thick sarcotesta, a uniformly thick sclerotesta and a uniformly thin endotesta. The nucellus is attached to the integument at least basally and contains a collapsed seed megaspore; a nucellar apex is absent. Both the integument and nucellus are vascularized by paired bundles in the major plane of the ovule; the integumentary bundles are considerably larger than the nucellar bundles and the nucellar bundles emerge from a conical vascular pad. Generation of a three‐dimensional reconstruction based on serial peels revealed the gross morphology and organization of the ovule and highlighted the presence of features consistent with cardiocarpalean‐type ovules (ovule shape, histological features of the integument) and also features more typical of lagenostomalean‐ and trigonocarpalean‐type ovules (large integumentary bundles, presence of nucellar bundles). To assess the affinity and evolutionary significance of the ovule, it has been included in a cladistic matrix of cardiocarpalean‐, lagenostomalean‐ and trigonocarpalean‐type ovules. Results place the ovule within the cardiocarpalean group of ovules known to have been produced by several plant groups, including cordaitean coniferophytes, pteridosperms and Palaeozoic conifers. The cladistic topology supports generic level distinction of the present species, requiring the establishment of Muricosperma guizhouensis Seyfullah & J.Hilton gen. & sp. nov . Lagenostomalean ovules produced by hydrasperman pteridosperms form a basal paraphyletic grade, whereas trigonocarpalean ovules produced by medullosan pteridosperms form a monophyletic group in which Stephanospermum is paraphyletic with respect to Rhynchosperma and Pachytesta. The results also place the Mississippian ovule Mitrospermum bulbosum apart from all of the Pennsylvanian species of Mitrospermum that form a strongly supported clade. Consequently, M. bulbosum is transferred to the new genus Whitaddera Seyfullah & J.Hilton as W. bulbosa (Long) Seyfullah & J.Hilton. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 164 , 84–108.  相似文献

The health of aquatic species is dependent on interactions between the environment, pathogens and the host. Under intensive shrimp aquaculture, environmental conditions can degrade, causing significant stress to the cultured organisms. To investigate the effect of environmental stress on shrimp hemocyte gene expression profiles, we applied suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) in juvenile Penaeus monodon exposed to hyperthermal, hypoxic or hyposmotic conditions. Random sequencing of 258 clones from the SSH revealed 176 distinct sequences of which 58 shared high similarity to sequences in the public databases. The three most common groups of identifiable unique sequences in the SSH libraries were the POL region of non-LTR retrotransposons (31%), genes with immune or potential immune functions (30%), and genes involved in protein synthesis and processing (18%). Stress-regulated differential expression was further verified by quantitative qRT-PCR, with seven out of eight randomly selected genes showing qRT-PCR profiles that conformed to the patterns predicted by SSH. Hence this work provides a list of genes which appear to be up- or down-regulated in response to stress, providing a basis for studying the genetic response of shrimp to environmental stress.  相似文献

The floral development of Phyllanthus chekiangensis has been studied by scanning electron microscopy. The perianth organs are initiated in two whorls, dimerous in male flowers and trimerous in female flowers, with a longer plastochron between whorls than between the organs within a whorl. Male flowers have two stamens. The prominent connective protrusions begin development simultaneously with the floral disk. The disk is two-lobed in male flowers but continuous in female flowers. In female flowers, the developing gynoecium remains open relatively long, so the developing ovules are visible from the outside for some time. The direction of the hemitropous ovules in the carpels is antitropous (epitropous). Two small obturators are formed per carpel, one above each ovule. The prominent nucellar beak extends far beyond the “micropyle”. A micropyle in the classical sense formed by integuments closing over the nucellus apex is not present at any stage of development. Thus, it is not correct to say that the nucellar beak “grows through the micropyle”. The exposed nucellar beak continues the curvature of the antitropous (epitropous) ovule and becomes contiguous with the obturator. The unusual length of the nucellar beak may be a potential synapomorphy of the enlarged Phyllanthus clade as inferred from molecular phylogenetics.  相似文献

High salinity is one of the most serious threats to crop production. To understand the molecular basis of plant responses to salt stress better, suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) and microarray approaches were combined to identify the potential important or novel genes involved in the early stage of tomato responses to severe salt stress. First, SSH libraries were constructed for the root tissue of two cultivated tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) genotypes: LA2711, a salt-tolerant cultivar, and ZS-5, a salt-sensitive cultivar, to compare salt treatment and non-treatment plants. Then a subset of clones from these SSH libraries were used to construct a tomato cDNA array and microarray analysis was carried out to verify the expression changes of this set of clones upon a high concentration of salt treatment at various time points compared to the corresponding non-treatment controls. A total of 201 non-redundant genes that were differentially expressed upon 30 min of severe salt stress either in LA2711 or ZS-5 were identified from microarray analysis; most of these genes have not previously been reported to be associated with salt stress. The diversity of the putative functions of these genes indicated that salt stress resulted in a complex response in tomato plants.  相似文献
