Seed germination and seedling growth of Zostera marina L. were monitored in the Chesapeake Bay in 1979 and 1980. Harvested seeds were placed in small acrylic tubes at several sites representing the salinity range of Z. marina distribution. Seed germination was observed first in late September and continued through May, with peaks in the fall and spring. The majority of seeds that germinated (66%) did so between December and March when water temperatures ranged from 0–10°C. There was no correlation between sites (different salinity regimes) and frequency of germination rates, indicating that salinity was not a major factor in the germination process in this study. Additional information on seed germination was available for seeds collected in 1977 and 1980 and subsequently monitored for germination at only one site. These data were similar to germination frequency recorded in 1979–1980.Seedling growth was measured from individuals collected from an existing Zostera marina bed. Seedlings were collected from November through May, at which time we could no longer distinguish seedlings from existing vegetative stock. Growth was characterized by the increased length of the primary shoot, number of leaves per shoot and numbers of shoots per plant. Seedling growth was slow during the winter months (water temperature ? 10°C) but rapidly increased in the spring (temperatures > 10°C). The size range of the harvested seedlings indicated that seed germination in the field probably occurred from October through April, corroborating evidence from the seed germination experiments.  相似文献

Summary Pattern of change in leaf character was assessed along the length and around the circumference of Tsuga canadensis (L.) Carr. shoots of different length classes. Leaf size decreased, and number of leaves per unit length of shoot increased, with decrease in shoot length. Acropetally along the shoots, lamina length and width decreased, relative petiole length increased, apices became more pointed, and leaf margins bore more teeth. Around the shoot, from upper to side, and to lower surfaces, leaf size and number of marginal teeth in the proximal halves of leaves increased. These patterns were related both to production of preformed versus neoformed leaves, though their separation was indistinct, and to secondary orientation of leaves by twisting in their petiolar regions into two major bi-lateral ranks. An additional minor rank occurred along the upper surfaces of the shoots where secondary orientation of the leaves was minimal. Surface features of leaves did not differ in any obvious manner. Leaves on sylleptic shoots, which by definition were all neoformed, exhibited similar patterns, but were generally smaller than those on their parent shoots.  相似文献

Isogenic lines of pea (Pisum sativum L.) with the genetically determined changes in leaf morphology, afila (af) and tendril-less (tl), were used to study the relationship between shoot and root growth rates. The time-course of shoot and root growth was followed during the pre-floral period in the intact plants grown under similar conditions. The af mutation produced afila leaves without leaflets, whereas in the case of the tl mutations, tendrils were substituted with leaflets, and acacia-like leaves were developed. Due to the changes in leaf morphology caused by these mutations, pea genotypes differed in leaf area: starting from day 7, the leaf area was lower in the af plants and larger in the tl plants as compared to the wild-type plants. Such divergence was amplified in the course of plant development and reached its maximum immediately before the transition to flowering. Plants of isogenic lines did not notably differ in stem surface areas. In spite of significant difference in total leaf area, the wild type and tl plants did not differ in leaf dry weight. Starting from leaf 9, the af plants lagged behind two leaflet-bearing genotypes (wild type and tl) in leaf dry weight, whereas stem dry weight was similar in the wild type and tl forms and slightly lower in the af plants. Root dry weights were practically similar in the wild type and tl plants until flowering. The reduction of leaf area in the af plants drastically reduced root dry weight. In other words, the latter index was related to the total weight and total area of leaves and stems. The correlation analysis demonstrated an extremely low relationship between leaf and stem area and dry weight and those of roots early in plant development (when plants develop five to seven leaves). Later, immediately before flowering (nine to eleven leaves), root weight was positively related to leaf weight and area; however, stem area and root weight did not correlate. Thus, in three genotypes (wild type, af, and tl), at the end of their vegetative growth phase, leaf and root biomass accumulated in proportion, independently of leaf area expansion.  相似文献

Acclimation of light sensitivity of hydraulic conductance of shoots of silver birch (Betula pendula) and hybrid aspen (Populus × wettsteinii) to growth environments with three different air humidities was studied. Hydraulic conductance of shoots kept for 1–2 h in darkness (D) or in light (L) was measured by the pressure chamber method, and light sensitivity was defined as a significant difference between D and L shoots. Light sensitivity of shoots grown in three different air humidities was found to vary. Amongst shoots grown in current natural air, only the hydraulic conductance of the whole shoot and that of the leaf blades of birch upper foliage were significantly light sensitive. Amongst shoots grown in decreased air humidity, hydraulic conductance of the whole shoot, the leaf blades, and the stem and petioles of birch upper foliage, the conductance of the whole shoot and the leaf blades of birch lower foliage, and the conductance of the whole shoot of aspen upper foliage were light sensitive. None of the shoots grown in increased air humidity were significantly light sensitive. We predict that light sensitivity will become more widespread among species in regions where air humidity decreases as a result of global climate change, and vice versa. Low white light always caused the same increase in hydraulic conductance as high white light, and blue and white light always caused an increase in conductance about two times greater than red light, indicating that growth environment did not markedly modify the mechanism of light sensitivity.

Coexistence of multiple species is a fundamental aspect of plant and forest ecology. Although spatial arrangement of leaves within crowns is an important determinant of light interception and productivity, shoot structure varies considerably among coexisting canopy species. We investigated the relative importance of structural traits in determining the light availability of leaves (I) and light interception efficiency at the current-year shoot level (LIECS; the total light interception of leaves divided by shoot biomass) at the top of crowns of 11 canopy species in a cool-temperate forest in Japan. In accordance with Corner’s rules, the total mass, stem mass, total mass of leaf laminae, individual leaf area, and stem cross-sectional area of current-year shoot were positively correlated with each other, and branching intensity (the number of current-year shoots per branch unit of 1-m length) was inversely correlated with these traits across species. In contrast, I was correlated not with these traits, but with leaf elevation angle (a L). Moreover, variation in LIECS across species was caused by variation in I (thus in a L). Thus, a L is a key parameter for the leaf light interception of canopy shoots in this cool-temperate forest. Differences in a L across species might be related to different physiological strategies that developed in the high light and water-limited environment of forest canopies. Small variation in the length of current-year shoots among species implies that variations in I and LIECS would be important for the coexistence of these canopy species.  相似文献

Soil salinity is a complex issue in which various anions and cations contribute to have a general adverse effect on plant growth. In the present study, effects of salinity from various salts including sodium chloride (NaCl), potassium chloride?+?sodium chloride?+?calcium chloride (KCl?+?NaCl?+?CaCl2), potassium sulfate?+?magnesium nitrate (K2SO4?+?Mg(NO3)2) at two electric conductivities (EC) of 2 and 4 dS m?1 of irrigation water, and a distilled water control were evaluated on coriander plants (Coriandrum sativum L.). At EC?=?2, all salts increased plant yield (shoot fresh weight) than control. Most growth traits including plant height, shoot fresh and dry weight, leaf SPAD value and vitamin C, leaf K, Mg and P concentrations were increased by K2SO4?+?MgNO3, and remained unchanged by KCl?+?NaCl?+?CaCl2 treatment (except reduced plant height). Leaf’s zinc concentration reduced by either treatment. Even sodium chloride at EC?=?2 showed some beneficial effects on leaf chlorophyll index, root fresh weight, leaf’s calcium and phosphorus concentration; however, most traits remained unchanged than control. Treatment of plants with NaCl or KCl?+?NaCl?+?CaCl2 at either EC increased the number of flowered shoots and leaf proline content than control. Most growth and quality traits including leaf minerals and vitamin C content were reduced by NaCl at EC?=?4; however, shoot fresh and dry weights remained unchanged than control. Plant root fresh weight increased by NaCl at EC?=?2 and decreased at EC?=?4 than control. At EC?=?4, shoot dry weight was increased and leaf Ca, P, Zn and Mn were decreased by KCl?+?NaCl?+?CaCl2, whereas shoot dry weight, leaf SPAD value and vitamin C content, leaf Mg and P were increased and leaf Zn was decreased by K2SO4?+?MgNO3 than control. The results indicate that in contrast to sodium chloride, the salinity effects of other salts can not be detrimental on coriander plant growth.  相似文献

Seasonal and year-to-year variations in the growth of Zostera marina L. were measured at three sites in two locations in the lower Chesapeake Bay between 1978 and 1980. The maximum values for the 1979 above- and belowground standing crop ranged from 161–336 g dry wt m−2 and 61–155 g dry wt m−2, respectively, leaf length was 19.6–59.7 cm and shoot density 1418–2576 shoot m−2. Values for 1980 tended to be greater and may be related to climatical differences between the two years. Maximum values were usually recorded in the months of June and July when water temperatures were between 20 and 25°C. Significant loss of leaves occurred in July and August, when water temperatures ranged between 25 and 30°C, while new shoots began to appear more rapidly in late September as water temperatures dropped below 20°C. The greatest increase in all growth parameters occurred from April to June during which time reproductive shoots were present, and accounted for up to 25% of the total number of shoots.  相似文献

Location within a tree was analyzed as a source of variation in Sequoia sempervirens leaf monoterpenes. No differences were found for quantitative composition or total yield/dry wt among lower, middle and upper canopy positions. The awlshaped, spirally arranged leaves of vigorous upper shoots showed small quantitative compositional differences, but not differences in total yield. The intermediate leaf form of young sprouts had the most different monoterpene quantitative composition and about three times the total yield of the above two leaf forms. Analysis of a clonal ring of 17 adult trees resulted in coefficients of variation similar to those for samples collected from different canopy levels of the same shoot. Results revealed the sources and magnitudes of experimental error in comparative studies of this species' leaf monoterpenes, and did not support the concept that somatic mutation provides an important source of variation in a large, long-lived organism such as coast redwood.  相似文献

Background and Aims Halophytic eudicots are characterized by enhanced growth under saline conditions. This study combines physiological and anatomical analyses to identify processes underlying growth responses of the mangrove Avicennia marina to salinities ranging from fresh- to seawater conditions. Methods Following pre-exhaustion of cotyledonary reserves under optimal conditions (i.e. 50 % seawater), seedlings of A. marina were grown hydroponically in dilutions of seawater amended with nutrients. Whole-plant growth characteristics were analysed in relation to dry mass accumulation and its allocation to different plant parts. Gas exchange characteristics and stable carbon isotopic composition of leaves were measured to evaluate water use in relation to carbon gain. Stem and leaf hydraulic anatomy were measured in relation to plant water use and growth.Key Results Avicennia marina seedlings failed to grow in 0–5 % seawater, whereas maximal growth occurred in 50–75 % seawater. Relative growth rates were affected by changes in leaf area ratio (LAR) and net assimilation rate (NAR) along the salinity gradient, with NAR generally being more important. Gas exchange characteristics followed the same trends as plant growth, with assimilation rates and stomatal conductance being greatest in leaves grown in 50–75 % seawater. However, water use efficiency was maintained nearly constant across all salinities, consistent with carbon isotopic signatures. Anatomical studies revealed variation in rates of development and composition of hydraulic tissues that were consistent with salinity-dependent patterns in water use and growth, including a structural explanation for low stomatal conductance and growth under low salinity. Conclusions The results identified stem and leaf transport systems as central to understanding the integrated growth responses to variation in salinity from fresh- to seawater conditions. Avicennia marina was revealed as an obligate halophyte, requiring saline conditions for development of the transport systems needed to sustain water use and carbon gain.  相似文献

Variation in leaf and shoot hydraulic conductance was examined on detached shoots of silver birch (Betula pendula Roth), cut from the lower third (shade leaves) and upper third of the crown (sun leaves) of large trees growing in a natural temperate forest stand. Hydraulic conductances of whole shoots (K S), leaf blades (K lb), petioles (K P) and branches (i.e. leafless stem; K B) were determined by water perfusion using a high-pressure flow meter in quasi-steady state mode. The shoots were exposed to irradiance of photosynthetic photon flux density of 200–250 μmol m−2 s−1, using different light sources. K lb depended significantly (P < 0.001) on light quality, canopy position and leaf blade area (A L). K lb increased from crown base to tree top, in parallel with vertical patterns of A L. However, the analysis of data on shade and sun leaves separately revealed an opposite trend: the bigger the A L the higher K lb. Leaf anatomical study of birch saplings revealed that this trend is attributable to enhanced vascular development with increasing leaf area. Hydraulic traits (K S, K B, K lb) of sun shoots were well co-ordinated and more strongly correlated with characteristics of shoot size than those of shade shoots, reflecting their greater evaporative load and need for stricter adjustment of hydraulic capacity with shoot size. K S increased with increasing xylem cross-sectional area to leaf area ratio (Huber value; P < 0.01), suggesting a preferential investment in water-conducting tissue (sapwood) relative to transpiring tissue (leaves), and most likely contributing to the functional stability of the hydraulic system, essential for fast-growing pioneer species.  相似文献

Backgrounds and Aims

Shoot demography affects the growth of the tree crown and the number of leaves on a tree. Masting may cause inter-annual and spatial variation in shoot demography of mature trees, which may in turn affect the resource budget of the tree. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of masting on the temporal and spatial variations in shoot demography of mature Betula grossa.

Methods

The shoot demography was analysed in the upper and lower parts of the tree crown in mature trees and saplings over 7 years. Mature trees and saplings were compared to differentiate the effect of masting from the effect of exogenous environment on shoot demography. The fate of different shoot types (reproductive, vegetative, short, long), shoot length and leaf area were investigated by monitoring and by retrospective survey using morphological markers on branches. The effects of year and branch position on demographic parameters were evaluated.

Key Results

Shoot increase rate, production of long shoots, bud mortality, length of long shoots and leaf area of a branch fluctuated periodically from year to year in mature trees over 7 years, in which two masting events occurred. Branches within a crown showed synchronized annual variation, and the extent of fluctuation was larger in the upper branches than the lower branches. Vegetative shoots varied in their bud differentiation each year and contributed to the dynamic shoot demography as much as did reproductive shoots, suggesting physiological integration in shoot demography through hormonal regulation and resource allocation.

Conclusions

Masting caused periodic annual variation in shoot demography of the mature trees and the effect was spatially variable within a tree crown. Since masting is a common phenomenon among tree species, annual variation in shoot demography and leaf area should be incorporated into resource allocation models of mature masting trees.  相似文献

The annual leaf growth and shoot dynamics of Thalassia testudinum were examined in a meadow located near Havana City, Cuba, using direct censuses between January 1995 and January 1996. The net rate of shoot population change, specific shoot recruitment and mortality rates were calculated as the difference between the densities of shoots (tagged or untagged) in consecutive sampling events. The leaf biomass, the daily production, the turnover rate and the rate of leaf biomass loss were also estimated. The estimated mean dry leaf biomass (124.9 ± 9.5 g m−2), daily dry leaf production (3.3 ± 0.2 g m−2 day−1) and turnover rate (2.7 ± 0.1% day−1) were comparable to values previously reported for this species in Cuba and elsewhere. The production of leaves and shoots were higher in spring, declined towards mid summer, and showed the minimum values in January. Shoot recruitment prevailed over shoot mortality from January to March and from July to August, whereas most of the annual shoot mortality occurred between May and July and between August and October. The meadow examined was in close demographic balance along the study period. The results demonstrate that direct census provides reliable estimates of rapid shoot dynamics in T. testudinum.  相似文献

Impacts of elephants (Loxodonta africana africana) on woody vegetation has attracted substantial attention for decades, but plant-level responses remain a gap in the understanding of savanna ecology. Marula (Sclerocarya birrea caffra) forms an important part of elephant diets. We investigated the relationships between browsing intensity and shoot/leaf size, nitrogen (N) and condensed tannin (CT) concentrations in upper and lower canopies of male and female marula individuals in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, South Africa. Browsing intensity (54%) did not differ between sexes, suggesting no preference by elephants for either sex. Females had higher [CT] than males and tannin decreased with increasing browsing intensity in both sexes. In lightly or moderately browsed trees, [CT] was controlled by unmeasured factors such that within-tree impacts of browsing were more variable in lightly/moderately browsed than heavily browsed trees. There was little change in [N] up to ~60% browsing intensity, but [N] increased dramatically at higher intensity. Shoots and leaves on broken branches in the lower canopy were larger (2.5 and 1.2 times, respectively) than those on unbroken branches in either upper or lower canopies. Chemical responses were systemic and potentially influence browsing among trees, while growth responses were strongly localised and potentially influence browsing within trees. Although marula trees are able to compensate vigorously for browsing at the scale of individual organs, trees may become progressively carbon-deficient and have their lives shortened if total plant growth is negatively affected by chronic browsing, e.g. near permanent water.  相似文献

We investigated plant-mediated effects of the stem gall wasp, Dryocosmus kuriphilus Yasumatsu (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae), on other herbivores on the chestnut tree Castanea crenata. In the early season, leaves emerged earlier and in greater numbers on galled shoots than on ungalled shoots. On galled shoots the leaf to shoot biomass ratio was lower and the leaves were physically different. In May and June the concentration of nitrogen in leaves was higher on galled shoots than on ungalled shoots. In July, the water content of leaves was lower on galled shoots. In May and June, the number of aphids, Myzocallis kuricola Matsumura (Homoptera: Aphidoidea), on leaves was higher on galled shoots than on ungalled shoots, but the opposite was true at the end of July. Laboratory experiments showed that aphid fecundity and body weight decrease were higher in May and June when aphids fed on leaves on a galled shoot than when they fed on those on ungalled shoots. In contrast, aphid performance in July was greater on ungalled leaves than on galled leaves. Our findings suggest that gall initiation in a chestnut tree affected aphid performance by affecting host plant quality.  相似文献

The influence of leaf orientation and position within shoots on individual leaf light environments, carbon gain, and susceptibility to photoinhibition was studied in the California chaparral shrub Heteromeles arbutifolia with measurements of gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence, and by application of a three-dimensional canopy architecture model. Simulations of light absorption and photosynthesis revealed a complex pattern of leaf light environments and resulting leaf carbon gain within the shoots. Upper, south-facing leaves were potentially the most productive because they intercepted greater daily photon flux density (PFD) than leaves of any other orientation. North-facing leaves intercepted less PFD but of this, more was received on the abaxial surface because of the steep leaf angles. Leaves differed in their response to abaxial versus adaxial illumination depending on their orientation. While most had lower photosynthetic rates when illuminated on their abaxial as compared to adaxial surface, the photosynthetic rates of north-facing leaves were independent of the surface of illumination. Because of the increasing self-shading, there were strong decreases in absorbed PFD and daily carbon gain in the basipetal direction. Leaf nitrogen per unit mass also decreased in the basipetal direction but on a per unit area basis was nearly constant along the shoot. The decrease in leaf N per unit mass was accounted for by an increase in leaf mass per unit area (LMA) rather than by movement of N from older to younger leaves during shoot growth. The increased LMA of older lower leaves may have contributed directly to their lower photosynthetic capacities by increasing the limitations to diffusion of CO2 within the leaf to the sites of carboxylation. There was no evidence for sun/shade acclimation along the shoot. Upper leaves and especially south-facing upper leaves had a potential risk for photoinhibition as demonstrated by the high PFDs received and the diurnal decreases in the fluorescence ratio F v/F m. Predawn F v/F m ratios remained high (>0.8) indicating that when in their normal orientations leaves sustained no photoinhibition. Reorientation of the leaves to horizontal induced a strong sustained decrease in F v/F m and CO2 exchange that slowly recovered over the next 10–15?days. If leaves were also inverted so that the abaxial surface received the increased PFDs, then the reduction in F v/F m and CO2 assimilation was much greater with no evidence for recovery. The heterogeneity of responses was due to a combination of differences between leaves of different orientation, differences between responses on their abaxial versus adaxial surfaces, and differences along the shoot due to leaf age and self-shading effects.  相似文献

The development of axillary buds, terminal buds, and the shoots extended from them was studied inHydrangea macrophylla. The upper and lower parts in a nonflower-bearing shoot are discernible; the preformed part of a shoot develops into the lower part and the neoformed part into the upper part (Zhou and Hare, 1988). These two part are formed by the different degrees of internode elongation at early and late phases during a growth season, respectively. Leaf pairs in the neoformed part of the shoot are initiated successively with a plastochron of 5–20 days after the bud burst in spring. The upper axillary buds are initiated at approximately the same intervals as those of leaf pairs, but 10–30 days later than their subtending leaves. Changes in numbers of leaf pairs and in lengths of successive axillary buds show a pattern similar to the changes in internode lengths of the shoot at the mature stage. The uppermost axillary buds of the flower-bearing shoot often begin extending into new lateral shoots when the flowering phase has ended. The secondary buds in terminal and lower axillary buds are initiated and developed in succession during the late phase of the growth season. Internode elongation seems to be important in determining the degrees of development of the axillary buds. Pattern of shoot elongation is suggested to be relatively primitive. Significances of apical dominance and environmental conditions to shoot development are discussed.  相似文献

Three deciduous broad-leaved trees, Quercus serrata, Castanea crenata and Carpinus laxiflora, were the main constituents of a coppice forest in central Japan. The shoot elongation and leaf emergence modes of both saplings and the canopy of the three species were investigated. The shoot elongation modes of Q. serrata and C. crenata were the same in saplings and the upper layer of the canopy. The second shoots of these two species were formed after the first shoots were elongated. C. laxiflora was different between saplings and the upper layer of the canopy. In saplings, only the first shoots took a long time to elongate. In the upper canopy layer, higher order shoots were formed in the same way as in the other two species. In the lower layer of the canopy, all three species showed the same shoot elongation mode, in which only the first shoot and its duration of elongation was short. Leaf longevity, individual leaf area, leaf mass per unit leaf area and the stem mass per unit stem length of C. laxiflora were significantly shorter or significantly smaller than those of Q. serrata and C. crenata. The length of the stem per unit leaf area of C. laxiflora was three times that of Q. serrata and five times that of C. crenata. The elongation growth of C. laxiflora was highly efficient as it occurred with a small leaf area. The shoot dynamics and the shoot structure of C. laxiflora are more suitable for elongation growth than in Q. serrata and C. crenata. Furthermore, the shoot structures of the three species were compared and ecological characteristics of the three species are discussed. Silicon (Si) accumulation in organs and cells is one of the most prominent characteristics of plants of the family Poaceae. Many species from this family are used as forage plants for animal feeding. The present study investigates in Brachiaria brizantha (Hochst. ex A. Rich.) Stapf. cv. Marandu: (1) the dry matter production and Si content in shoot due to soil Si fertilizations; (2) the Si distribution among shoot parts; and (3) the silica deposition and localization in leaves. Plants of B. brizantha cv. Marandu were grown under contrasting Si supplies in soil and nutrient solution. Silica deposition and distribution in grass leaf blades were observed using light microscope and scanning electron microscope equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (SEM-EDXS). Silicon concentration in the B. brizantha shoot increased according to the Si supply. Silicon in grass leaves decreased following the order: mature leaf blades > recently expanded leaf blades > non-expanded leaf blades. Silicon accumulates mainly on the upper (adaxial) epidermis of the grass leaf blades and, especially, on the bulliform cells. The Si distribution on adaxial leaf blade surface is non uniform and reflects a silica deposition exclusively on the cell wall of bulliform cells.  相似文献
