Eight carotane sesquiterpenes from Ferula linkii

Six new carotane sesquiterpenes, the p-methoxybenzoate-, isovalerate- and veratrate of epoxyjaesckeanadiol, the 1-acetate, 5-isovalerate of ferulinkiol, the 1-acetate, 5-isovalerate of lapiferol and the 1-acetate of lapiferol, and the already known p-methoxybenzoate of jaesckeanadiol and lapiferin have been isolated from Ferula linkii.     

Daucane esters from Ferula communis subsp. communis

Fourteen daucane esters together with a known propiophenone 3,4-methylenedioxy-5-hydroxy-propiophenone, were isolated from Ferula communis subsp. communis. Except for the 6-(p-anisic acid) ester of jaeschkeanadiol all these esters are new. Structures were elucidated using spectral properties of the esters and their partial hydrolysis products. X-ray diffraction analysis of one of the compounds confirmed its structure including the stereochemical assignments made on the basis of spectral data.     

Triterpenes from Ferula linkii

Two new natural triterpenes, 3β-acetoxyolean-9,12-diene and 3β-acetoxy-6β-hydroxyolean-9,12-diene, were isolated from Ferula linkii.

The structures of three new tricyclic sesquiterpenes from Eremophila georgei are described. The absolute stereochemistry of these sesquiterpenes is shown to be antipodal to that of the zizane sesquiterpenes of vetiver oil.     

Guaiane type sesquiterpenes and other constituents from Daucus carota L.

In a chemosystematic investigation of the fruits of Daucus carota L. we have isolated eleven compounds including four guaiane type sesquiterpenes (1–4), one eudesmane type sesquiterpene (5) and six other constituents (6–11). Among them, the five compounds 1–5 all are new for Daucus carota L. and all have been reported in Torilis japonica. The results show that Daucus carota L. is chemically similar with Torilis japonica providing chemical evidence for both species used as the same traditional Chinese medicine “nanheshi”.     

A new coumarin from Ferula loscosii and the correct structure of coladonin

From the roots of Ferula loscosii the coumarins umbelliprenin, coladin and coladonin and the new natural isovaleryl derivative of the latter have been isolated. A study which confirms the structure of coladonin and its difference from farnesiferol A is also given.     

Les sesquiterpenes de Cupressus dupreziana

Heartwood extractives of C. dupreziana were investigated. Carvacrol methyl ether, cedrol and α-cedrene are present, together with sesquiterpene hydrocarbons. A comparison is made with those found in C. sempervirens and other Cupressus species.     

Isocedrene derivatives and other sesquiterpenes from moscharia pinnatifida

From the aerial parts of Moscharia pinnatifida nine further α-isocedrene, two guaiane, three cyperene and two nerolidol derivatives were isolated. The structures were elucidated by high field NMR studies. Chemotaxonomic aspects are discussed.     

Amotin and amoenin,two sesquiterpenes of the picrotoxane group from Dendrobium amoenum

Two new sesquiterpenes, amotin and amoenin, of the picrotoxane group were isolated from Dendrobium amoenum. The constitution of amoenin was evident from spectral investigations and by its conversion into α-dihydro-picrotoxinin on oxidation with oxygen in the presence of platinum. The constitution of amotin was shown by its spectral properties and the conversion of aduncin into amotin by hydrogenolysis of its epoxide ring. That the configuration at C-4 in aduncin and amotin is R was supported by circular dichroism measurements on some derivatives of picrotoxinin and aduncin.     

Carotane sesquiterpenes from Ferula linkii

Five new carotane sesquiterpenes have been isolated from Ferula linkii. These were the 3-angelate of felikiol, angelate- and epoxyangelate of webiol, 5-isovalerate of ferutriol and veratrate of lancerotol, and the already known p-hydroxybenzoate- and p-methoxybenzoate of lancerotol. The structures of the 3-angelate of felikiol and epoxyangelate of webiol were determined by X-ray analysis.     

Dehydropinguisanin,dehydropinguisenol and pinguisenal,three pinguisane-type sesquiterpenes from Trocholejeunea sandvicensis

Three new pinguisane-type sesquiterpenes, dehydropinguisanin, dehydropinguisenol and pinguisenal together with the previously known deoxopinguisone, pinguisanin, pinguisanolide and (—)-bicyclogermacrene, have been isolated from the liverwort, Trocholejeunea sandvicensis, and their structures have been established from spectral evidence.

Biosynthesis of sesquiterpenes in Hymenaea inferred from their quantitative co-occurrence

Leaf pocket resins of 11 species of the tropical arborescent genus Hymenaea are virtually identical qualitatively, but of widely varying quantitative proportions. Within this large range of variability, several strong positive quantitative correlations between resin constituents were found, especially between caryophyllene and β-humulene and between γ-muurolene and δ-cadinene. These data lead to clarification of sesquiterpene biosynthetic routes in Hymenaea. In addition, quantitative relationships found among caryophyllene, α- and β-selinene, γ-muurolene and δ-cadinene are explained only with difficulty by long accepted biosynthetic pathways, and the intermediacy of germacrenes is suggested.     

Pinguisanin,pinguisanolide and β-pinguisenediol,three new pinguisane-type sesquiterpenes from Porella platyphylla

Two sesquiterpenes from Senecio species

Sesquiterpene lactones from Smyrnium cordifolium

In addition to previously obtained furanosesquiterpenes, two new eudesmanolides and a new glechomanolide were isolated from the fruits of Smyrnium cordifolium, while the roots gave two new eudesmanolides. The new compounds from the fruits were 1β-acetoxy-eudesman-4(15), 7(11)-dien-8,12-olide, 1β-acetoxy-8β-hydroxy-eudesman-4(15),7(11)-dien-8,12-olide, 1β,10α;4α,5β-diepoxy-8-hydroxy-glechomanolide, those obtained from the roots were smyrnicordiolide and the corresponding 8β-hydroxy derivative belonging to a new type of oxepine derivative.     

Sesquiterpene acids from Dittrichia viscosa

Dittrichia viscosa afforded in addition to compounds reported previously, ilicic acid and two new sesquiterpene acids. The structures of the new compounds were established by chemical and spectral methods.
