Cytotoxic antileukemic anthraquinones from Morinda parvifolia

Bioassay-directed fractionation of an antileukemic extract of Morinda parvifolia (Hong-Zhu-Teng) has led to the isolation and characterization of cytotoxic anthraquinones which include the new morindaparvin-B and the known lucidin-ω-methyl ether, lucidin-ω-methyl ether, digiferruginol, 1-hydroxy-6 or 7-hydroxymethylanthraquinone and 2-hydroxymethylanthraquinone in addition to the previously reported antileukemic morindaparvin-A and alizarin-1-methyl ether. 2-Hydroxymethylanthraquinone demonstrated significant activity (T/C = 150%) in the P-388 lymphocytic leukemia screen at 10 mg/kg/day. The structures of these compounds were determined by physicochemical data and spectral evidence.     

Iridoid glucosides from the stems of three bioactive Brazilian Faramea species (Rubiaceae)

In this paper our previous chemical study of the anti-dengue active species Faramea bahiensis, Faramea hyacinthina and Faramea truncata (synonym of Faramea caudata) (Rubiaceae) is complemented by isolating from their stems, through a combination of silica gel and Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography and reversed-phase solid-phase extraction, the known iridoid glucosides monotropein (1), monotropein methyl ester (2) and 10-deacetylasperulosidic acid (3). The structures were established by HPLC-DAD-MS/MS analysis, NMR spectroscopy and comparison with literature data. This is the first report on the occurrence of these compounds in the genus Faramea Aubl. This work contributes to expand the knowledge of the chemical diversity of this botanical genus, of which a limited number of identified compounds have been reported.     

Two anthraquinones from Ventilago calyculata

Two new anthraquinones have been isolated from the root bark of ventilago calyculata and their structures shown to be 2,4,8-trihydroxy-1-methoxy-3-methylanthraquinone and 2,4,8-trihydroxy-1,6-dimethoxy-3-methyl-anthraquinone.     

Two new iridoid glucosides from Gardenia jasminoides fruits

From the fruits of Gardenia jasminoides which have been employed as Chinese crude drug “Shan-zhii”, two further new iridoid glucosides, gardoside (8,10-dehydrologanic acid) and scandoside methyl ester have been isolated and their structures have been established.     

Anthraquinones in callus cultures of Cinchona ledgeriana

From callus cultures of Cinchona ledgeriana seven known anthraquinones, purpurin, anthragallol-1,2-dimethylether, anthragallol-1,3-dimethylether, rubiadin, 1-hydroxy-2-hydroxymethylanthraquinone, 1-hydroxy-2-methylanthraquinone and morindone-5-methylether (or 1,7-dihydroxy-8-methoxy-2-methylanthraquinone), and eight new anthraquinones, 5,6-dimethoxy-1-(or -4-)hydroxy-2-(or -3-)hydroxymethylanthraquinone, 5-methoxy-2-(or -3-)methyl-1,4,6-trihydroxyanthraquinone, 2-hydroxy-1,3,4-trimethoxyanthraquinone, 4-methoxy-1,3,5-trihydroxyanthraquinone, 1,4-dimethoxy-2,3-methylenedioxyanthraquinone, 1,3-dihydroxy-4-methoxyanthraquinone, 1,3-dihydroxy-2,5-dimethoxyanthraquinone and 2,5-(or 3,5-)dihydroxy-1,3,4-(or -1,2,4-)trimethoxyanthraquinone have been isolated.     

Two new 11-noriridoids from the aerial parts of Morinda umbellata

This work was done as a part of our ongoing projects to catalog the chemical constituents and biological activities of the Morinda species growing in Vietnam. Phytochemical investigations of the methanol extract of Morinda umbellata aerial parts resulted in the isolation of two new 11-noriridoids, umbellatolides A (1) and B (2). Their structures were elucidated by NMR (¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR, HSQC, HMBC, ¹H–¹H COSY, and NOESY) and FTICRMS data. This is the first report of 11-noriridoids from M. umbellata. The cytotoxic activity and protective effect on oxidative stress injury stimulated by H₂O₂ in murine hepatocyte of 1 and 2 were also evaluated.

The uncoupling activity of substituted anthracene derivatives on isolated mitochondria from Phaseolus aureus

Unsubstituted anthraquinones and anthrones have a low uncoupling activity on isolated mitochondria. The presence of phenolic groups is a prerequisite for a marked effect. The number of phenolic groups is of minor importance but their substitution pattern is important. The methylene group of the anthrones increases the activity.     

Anthraquinones from the Genus cortinarius

The anthraquinones 6-methylxanthopurpurin-3-methyl ether, xanthorin, and 1,4-dihydroxy-2-methoxy-7-methyl-9,10-anthraquinone (austrocortinin) have been isolated from fruit bodies of a red Australian toadstool belonging to the genus Cortinarius; austrocortinin is reported for the first time as a natural product.     

Two pentacyclic triterpenes from Rubia cordifolia

Rubicoumaric acid and rubifolic acid isolated from Rubia cordifolia have been shown to be 30-hydroxy-3β-p-hydroxycoumaryloxy-urs-12-ene-28-oic acid and 3β,30-dihydroxy-urs-12-ene-28-oic acid(30-hydroxyursolic acid) respectively on the basis of ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR and mass spectral and chemical evidence.

Antiviral Activity of Faramea hyacinthina and Faramea truncata Leaves on Dengue Virus Type‐2 and Their Major Compounds

The defatted fractions of the Faramea hyacinthina and F. truncata (Rubiaceae) leaf MeOH extracts showed in vitro non‐cytotoxic and anti‐dengue virus serotype 2 (DENV2) activity in human hepatocarcinoma cell lineage (HepG2). Submitting these fractions to the developed RP‐SPE method allowed isolating the antiviral flavanone (2S)‐isosakuranetin‐7‐O‐β‐d ‐apiofuranosyl‐(1→6)‐β‐d ‐glucopyranoside ( 1 ) from both species and yielded less active sub‐fractions. The new diastereoisomeric epimer pair (2S) + (2R) of 5,3′,5′‐trihydroxyflavanone‐7‐O‐β‐d ‐apiofuranosyl‐(1→6)‐β‐d ‐glucopyranoside ( 2a / 2b ) from F. hyacinthina; the known narigenin‐7‐O‐β‐d ‐apiofuranosyl‐(1→6)‐β‐d ‐glucopyranoside ( 3 ) from both species; rutin ( 4 ) and quercetin‐4′‐β‐d ‐O‐glucopyranosyl‐3‐O‐rutinoside ( 5 ) from F. hyacinthina, and kaempferol‐3‐O‐rutinoside ( 6 ), erythroxyloside A ( 7 ) and asperuloside ( 8 ) from F. truncata have been isolated from these sub‐fractions. Compounds 4  –  8 are reported for the first time in Faramea spp.     

An anthraquinone from the roots of Digitalis davisiana

A new anthraquinone, 1-hydroxy-2-hydroxymethyl-8-methoxyanthraquinone, was isolated from the root of Digitalis davisiana.     

Two new iridoid glucosides from Ixora chinensis

From leaves and twigs of Ixora chinensis, two new iridoid glucosides, ixoroside (1) and ixoside (7,8-dehydroforsythide) (2) along with known geniposidic acid (3) have been isolated and their structures have been established.     

Two sinapyl alcohol derivatives from bergamot essential oil

Together with T-cadinol, β-eudesmol, farnesol, sitosterol and suberosin, two derivatives of sinapyl alcohol have been identified in the less volatile     

4-Arylcoumarins from Coutarea hexandra

Four new 4-arylcoumarins have been isolated from Coutarea hexandra and their structures established as 5,7,4′-trimethoxy-4-phenylcoumarin, 4′-hydroxy-5,7-dimethoxy-4-phenylcoumarin, 3′-hydroxy-5,7-4′-trimethoxy-4-phenylcoumarin and 3′,4′-dihydroxy-5,7-dimethoxy-4-phenylcoumarin.     

黄棉木中两个新的三萜类化合物

从黄棉木（Metadina trichotoma（Zoll．et．Mor．）Bakn．）树皮中分离得到2个新的三萜类化合物：3-oxo-29-hydroxy-urs-12-en-27,28-dioicacid（黄棉木素A,1）和3-oxo-21β-hydroxy-urs-12-en-27,28-dioicacid（黄棉木素B,2）。其结构主要通过MS,1D以及2DNMR等波谱方法鉴定。
