Circadian variations in core temperature, skin temperatures, heart rate, and salivary immunoglobulin A (IgA) were compared in subjects wearing two different types of clothing that covered, or left uncovered, their extremities. The experiments were carried out on six female subjects at an ambient temperature of 24 ± 0.5°C and relative humidity of 50 ± 5%. One type of clotiiing consisted of long-sleeved shirts, full-length trousers, and socks (Type L: 1042 g, 1.048 clo); the other was half-sleeved shirts and knee-length trousers (Type H: 747 g, 0.744 clo). The main results were as follows: (i) The level of rectal temperature during night sleep was significantly lower with Type H than Type L clothing, and cosinor analysis indicated a significantly higher circadian amplitude with Type H clothing, (ii) Skin temperatures in the lower extremities increased significantly more on retiring to sleep with Type H than Type L clothing, (iii) Heart rate was significantly lower with Type H than Type L clothing during the sleep period, (iv) The day-night variation of salivary IgA showed a pattern that was the inverse of that of rectal temperature (i.e., low in the daytime and high in the nighttime), and the concentration of salivary IgA was significantly higher with Type H than Type L clothing at 02:30. (v) Subjectively, the self-assessed sleep quality was better with Type H clothing. These results suggest that clothing that leaves the extremities uncovered might be regarded as favorable at the moderate temperature since it induces good sleep and activates the immune response. This study investigated the effects of clothing providing different Clo values upon the circadian rhythm of sympathetic nervous activity, as inferred from urinary catecholamine excretion and heart rate, in a thermoneutral environment. Seven health female subjects were studied for 37.5 h, from 21:00 h on the first day to 10:30 h on the third day, in an isolated climatic chamber controlled at 23.8?±?0.2 °C and 60?±?5% RH. Light intensity was 500 lux from 06:30 to 19:30 h, 100 lux from 19:30 to 22:30 h and 0 lux from 22:30 to 06:30 h. Subjects were tested while wearing two different types of clothing: Type L, offering 1.048 Clo of thermal insulation and with the subjects’ extremities covered; and Type H, 0.744 Clo of thermal insulation and the subjects’ extremities exposed. Urine samples were collected every 4 h, their volumes were measured and they were later assayed for their contents of adrenaline and noradrenaline; the mean heart rate for each of these 4-h periods was also calculated. The daily profiles of the variables were assessed by ANOVA, which indicated that the amplitudes and phases of the daily rhythms differed between the clothing types. This result was examined in more detail by assessing the profiles by single and group cosinor analysis (period = 24 h). All four physiological variables showed clear and statistically significant group cosinor rhythms with both types of clothing. The mean amplitudes of urine flow, the excretion rate of urinary adrenaline and heart rate were greater when wearing Type H rather than Type L clothing (p = 0.01 for urine flow and heart rate; p = 0.072 for rate of excretion of adrenaline). Also, the acrophase of the rate of urinary adrenaline excretion was earlier in all subjects wearing Type H rather than Type L clothing (p = 0.048), and the acrophases of urine flow and urinary noradrenaline excretion rate were earlier in six and five of the subjects, respectively. These results show that clothing which is worn in an environment of moderate temperature (23.8 °C) and which offers a lower Clo value (especially if the distal extremities are exposed) might induce an increase in amplitude and/or an advance of acrophase in circadian rhythms of urine flow, excretion of urinary catecholamines and heart rate. It is suggested that these rhythmic changes, which imply changes in the daily profile of sympathetic nervous system activity, might be important when daily thermoregulation and comfort in response to the type of clothing being worn in daily life are considered.  相似文献

Sampling freshwater biological diversity is a challenge when it comes down to techniques for meiofauna fixation and preservation because this polyphyletic group of taxa is highly diverse. The aim of this study is to test the performance of three anesthetics (CO2, MgCl2 and low temperature) and three fixatives (formaldehyde 4 %; buffered formaldehyde 4 and 70 % ethanol) in the preservation of “soft” (gastrotrichs and rotifers) and “hard” (tardigrades and copepods) freshwater benthic meiofaunal assemblages. Due to these different morphological structures, we expected that treatment performance would vary among taxa in the quality of specimen fixation. Results revealed that the meiofaunal abundances of samples sorted alive or after the treatments with a coupling of anesthetics and fixatives were not different. However, preservation of specimens varied substantially among “soft” and “hard” meiofauna and among treatments. The use of 4 % buffered formaldehyde is highly recommended for freshwater meiofauna, while unbuffered formaldehyde should be avoided. Studies that have “soft” meiofauna as target organisms are recommended to use some type of anesthetic, although it is necessary to use a specific one for each taxon as they respond in different ways to different anesthetics.  相似文献

The study investigated how the pressure exerted on the skin by clothing worn while working in the daytime affected the urinary excretion of adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol, heart rate, and also melatonin secretion at night. Nine young women (experiment I) and seven young women (experiment II) participated. Participants wore either a 100% cotton jacket (tight clothes, TC) or a 100% cotton T-shirt (loose clothes, LC). Loose-fitting, 100% cotton tank tops and panties were worn as underwear in both the TC and the LC groups. The main results can be summarized as follows: (1) urinary excretion of adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol was facilitated, and the amounts of urinary excretion were significantly higher when TC were worn. Heart rate was significantly higher in the TC group; (2) nocturnal urinary melatonin excretion was significantly greater in the TC group. These results are discussed in terms of an enhancement of diurnal sympathetic nervous system activity caused by pressure on the skin produced by tight clothing.  相似文献

The guidelines for night and shift workers recommend that after night work, they should sleep in a dark environment during the daytime. However, staying in a dark environment during the daytime reduces nocturnal melatonin secretion and delays its onset. Daytime bright-light exposure after night work is important for melatonin synthesis the subsequent night and for maintaining the circadian rhythms. However, it is not clear whether daytime sleeping after night work should be in a dim- or a bright-light environment for maintaining melatonin secretion. The aim of this study, therefore, was to evaluate the effect of bright-light exposure during daytime sleeping on nocturnal melatonin secretion after simulated night work. Twelve healthy male subjects, aged 24.8 ± 4.6 (mean ± SD), participated in 3-day sessions under two experimental conditions, bright light or dim light, in a random order. On the first day, the subjects entered the experimental room at 16:00 and saliva samples were collected every hour between 18:00 and 00:00 under dim-light conditions. Between 00:00 and 08:00, they participated in tasks that simulated night work. At 10:00 the next morning, they slept for 6 hours under either a bright-light condition (>3000 lx) or a dim-light condition (<50 lx). In the evening, saliva samples were collected as on the first day. The saliva samples were analyzed for melatonin concentration. Activity and sleep times were recorded by a wrist device worn throughout the experiment. In the statistical analysis, the time courses of melatonin concentration were compared between the two conditions by three-way repeated measurements ANOVA (light condition, day and time of day). The change in dim light melatonin onset (ΔDLMO) between the first and second days, and daytime and nocturnal sleep parameters after the simulated night work were compared between the light conditions using paired t-tests. The ANOVA results indicated a significant interaction (light condition and3 day) (p = .006). Post hoc tests indicated that in the dim-light condition, the melatonin concentration was significantly lower on the second day than on the first day (p = .046); however, in the bright-light condition, there was no significant difference in the melatonin concentration between the days (p = .560). There was a significant difference in ΔDLMO between the conditions (p = .015): DLMO after sleeping was advanced by 11.1 ± 17.4 min under bright-light conditions but delayed for 7.2 ± 13.6 min after sleeping under dim-light conditions. No significant differences were found in any sleep parameter. Our study demonstrated that daytime sleeping under bright-light conditions after night work could not reduce late evening melatonin secretion until midnight or delay the phase of melatonin secretion without decreasing the quality of the daytime sleeping. Thus, these results suggested that, to enhance melatonin secretion and to maintain their conventional sleep–wake cycle, after night work, shift workers should sleep during the daytime under bright-light conditions rather than dim-light conditions.  相似文献

A preference for eveningness (being a “night owl”) and preterm birth (<37 weeks of gestation) are associated with similar adversities, such as elevated blood pressure, impaired glucose regulation, poorer physical fitness, and lower mood. Yet, it remains unclear if and how preterm birth is associated with circadian preference. The aim of this study was to assess this association across the whole gestation range, using both objective and subjective measurements of circadian preference.

Circadian preference was measured among 594 young adults (mean age 24.3 years, SD 1.3) from two cohorts: the ESTER study and the Arvo Ylppö Longitudinal Study. We compared 83 participants born early preterm (<34 weeks) and 165 late preterm (34 to <37 weeks) with those born at term (≥37 weeks, n = 346). We also compared very low birth weight (VLBW, <1500 g) participants with term-born controls. We obtained objective sleep data with actigraphs that were worn for a mean period of 6.8 (SD 1.4) nights. Our primary outcome was sleep midpoint during weekdays and weekend. The sleep midpoint is the half-way time between falling asleep and waking up, and it represents sleep timing. We also investigated subjective chronotype with the Morningness–Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ) in 688 (n = 138/221/329) ESTER participants. The MEQ consists of 19 questions, which estimates the respondent to be of a “morning”, “evening,” or “intermediate” chronotype, based on the Morningness–Eveningness Score (MES). We analyzed the data from the actigraphs and the MES with three linear regression models, and analyzed distribution of the chronotype class with Pearson χ2.

There were no consistent differences across the study groups in sleep midpoint. As compared with those born at term, the mean differences in minutes:seconds and 95% confidence intervals for the sleep midpoint were: early preterm weekdays 11:47 (?8:34 to 32:08), early preterm weekend 4:14 (?19:45 to 28:13), late preterm weekdays ?10:28 (?26:16 to 5:21), and late preterm weekend ?1:29 (?20:36 to 17:37). There was no difference in sleep timing between VLBW-participants and controls either. The distribution of chronotype in the MEQ among all participants was 12.4% morningness, 65.4% intermediate, and 22.2% eveningness. The distribution of the subjective chronotype class did not differ between the three gestational age groups (p = 0.98). The linear regression models did not show any influence of gestational age group or VLBW status on the MES (all p > 0.5).

We found no consistent differences between adults born early or late preterm and those born at term in circadian preference. The earlier circadian preference previously observed in those born smallest is unlikely to extend across the whole range of preterm birth.  相似文献

 This study evaluates the effect of different levels of insulation on esophageal (T es) and rectal (T re) temperature responses during and following moderate exercise. Seven subjects completed three 18-min bouts of treadmill exercise (75% VO2max, 22°C ambient temperature) followed by 30 min of recovery wearing either: (1) jogging shoes, T-shirt and shorts (athletic clothing); (2) single-knit commercial coveralls worn over the athletic clothing (coveralls); or (3) a Canadian Armed Forces nuclear, bacteriological and chemical warfare protective overgarment with hood, worn over the athletic clothing (NBCW overgarment). T es was similar at the start of exercise for each condition and baseline T re was ∼0.4°C higher than T es. The hourly equivalent rate of increase in T es during the final 5 min of exercise was 1.8°C, 3.0°C and 4.2°C for athletic clothing, coveralls and NBCW overgarment respectively (P<0.05). End-exercise T es was significantly different between conditions [37.7°C (SEM 0.1°C), 38.2°C (SEM 0.2°C and 38.5°C (SEM 0.2°C) for athletic clothing, coveralls and NBCW overgarment respectively)] (P<0.05). No comparable difference in the rate of temperature increase for T re was demonstrated, except that end-exercise T re for the NBCW overgarment condition was significantly greater (0.5°C) than that for the athletic clothing condition. There was a drop in T es during the initial minutes of recovery to sustained plateaus which were significantly (P<0.05) elevated above pre-exercise resting values by 0.6°C, 0.8°C and 1.0°C, for athletic clothing, coveralls, and NBCW overgarment, respectively. Post-exercise T re decreased very gradually from end-exercise values during the 30-min recovery. Only the NBCW overgarment condition T re was significantly elevated (0.3°C) above the athletic clothing condition (P<0.05). In conclusion, T es is far more sensitive in reflecting the heat stress of different levels of insulation during exercise and post-exercise than T re. Backround: Enuresis implies severe stress in affected children, and impairs quality of life and sleep. Children with enuresis experience difficulties in their arousal from sleep, possibly associated with disturbances of the circadian rhythm. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the sleep–wake cycle and sleep disturbances in children with monosymptomatic enuresis nocturna (MEN). Method: The study comprised 70 children with MEN who were admitted to the pediatrics and urology outpatients department and 94 age-matched healthy controls. Parents completed “Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire,” Children’s Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ), Children’s Chronotype Questionnaire scale. Results: Children with enuresis had significantly more sleep and psychological problem. Enuresis group reported higher bedtime resistance, parasomnias, breathing-related problems, and daytime sleepiness in CHSQ (p < 0.05). Although circadian preference did not differ statistically between the groups (p > 0.05), sleep duration on school days and awakening and mid-sleep points, both on scheduled and free days, were found to be significantly different in the enuretic group (p < 0.05). In logistic regression analysis, age, sleep period on scheduled days, sleep inertia on scheduled and free days were significant predictor for enuresis. Discussion: Children with enuresis were more likely to experience problematic sleep. This may reflect that enuretic children have impaired sleep–wake cycles, leading to dysregulation of daily functional changes of bladder capacity and related hormones such as ADH. These findings might imply a sleep–wake disturbance in enuresis.  相似文献

Aim of the present study is an additional validation of the Morningness–Eveningness-Stability Scale improved (MESSi). We screened a total of 97 German students using the reduced Morningness–Eveningness Questionnaire (rMEQ) to identify a subsample (N = 42) of definite morning and evening types (31% males, mean age: 24.8 ± 5.8?years). The participants provided information about their sleep–wake rhythm (diary), personality traits (questionnaire) and experienced actigraphic monitoring. Correlations of the MESSi components “Morning affect subscale” (MA) (r = 0.91, p < 0.01) and “Eveningness subscale” (r = ?0.87, p < 0.01) with the rMEQ showed good convergent validity. MA was also significantly negatively correlated with the acrophase and the midpoint of sleep as measured by actigraphy.  相似文献

This study was planned to assess the foraging activity of ecological important avian species the N. coromandelianus at Dulahara pond of Ratanpur, Chhattisgarh. In present work we observed the effect of “time of the day” and “photoperiod” on daytime foraging activities of N. coromandelianus. The most applied foraging skills of N. coromandelianus were documented for two repetitive days each for the period of long days (March and April 2015) and short days (December 2015 and January 2016). One-way ANOVA (by SPSS 16.0) was employed to observe the effects of “photoperiod” and “time of the day” on daytime foraging pattern in order to the frequency of foraging techniques. The rhythms in daytime foraging movement were estimated by means of Cosinor rhythmometry at 24 h and 12 h. The current study clarified that the N. coromandelianus mostly applied three main techniques viz., head and neck dipping, diving and striking on which both the diving and striking were the most employed technique while the head and neck dipping was less employed technique during foraging. Moreover, the N. coromandelianus maximally involved for foraging activities during the short day than long day.  相似文献

Schedule changes associated with rotating shifts can interfere with the circadian rhythms of nurses and thereby affect their sleep duration, sleep quality, work efficiency, and work performance. The objectives of this study was to investigate differences in workday sleep fragmentation, rest-activity cycle, sleep quality, and activity level among nurses working different shifts. After filling out a basic information questionnaire and completing the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire, participants were asked to wear an actigraph and keep sleep records for seven consecutive days. Data pertaining to wake after sleep onset (WASO), 24-hour autocorrelation coefficient (r24), and daytime activity mean was collected in order to investigate workday sleep fragmentation, rest-activity cycle, and daytime activity level. We obtained complete questionnaires and data from 191 nurses. Day- and evening-shift nurses had more regular workday rest-activity cycles than did night-shift nurses (F = 51.26, p < .001). After controlling for r24 coefficients, we determined that nurses who experienced greater workday sleep fragmentation had higher PSQI scores (β = .18, p = .008). After controlling for WASO times, we determined that nurses who had more regular rest-activity cycles on workdays had lower PSQI scores (β = – .16, p = .036). After controlling for shift type and WASO times, we determined that nurses with higher PSQI scores displayed lower activity levels (β = – .21, p = .015) and those with higher r24 coefficients displayed higher activity levels (β = .18, p = .040) on workdays. We then examined the causal path relationships. Among the shifts, only the day-shift nurses had a higher r24 (β = ?.59, p < .001) than did the night-shift nurses; WASO exerted a significant impact on PSQI scores (β = .20, p = .002); r24 had a significant and negative influence on PSQI scores (β = ?.38, p < .001), and PSQI scores significantly and negatively influenced workday activity levels (β = ?.20, p = .006). This study determined that day- and evening-shift nurses enjoyed more regular and consistent rest-activity cycles than did night-shift nurses; nurses with greater workday sleep fragmentation and/or more irregular rest-activity cycles experienced poorer sleep quality; and nurses suffering from poorer sleep quality displayed lower daytime activity levels on workdays.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to propose cutoff points for the Pediatric Daytime Sleepiness Scale (PDSS) through sensitivity and specificity analyses in order to identify excessive daytime sleepiness, considering parameters such as duration and quality of sleep, health perception, stress control and depressive moods (feelings of sadness) in adolescents. A total of 1,132 adolescents, aged 14–19 years old, of both sexes, from the public high school of São José – SC, answered the questionnaire with information on age, daytime sleepiness, sleep duration, health perception, stress management, depressive moods (feelings of sadness) and quality of sleep. The Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve was used to estimate cutoff points considering the sensitivity and specificity values ??that best identify adolescents with excessive daytime sleepiness, using independent variables as a reference. The majority of the sample was female (54.2%), aged 14–16 years. The girls presented worse quality of sleep (66.4%), and the boys had a more positive perception of health (74.8%), better stress control (64.8%) and lower depressive moods (feelings of sadness) (63.3%). The largest area in the ROC curve was the one that considered sleep quality as a parameter in both sexes (area of the curve = 0.709 and 0.659, respectively, for boys and girls, p < 0.001). Considering sleep quality as a reference, the cutoff point for excessive daytime sleepiness was 15 points. The other parameters used were also significant (p < 0.005). Poor sleep quality was the parameter most strongly related to daytime sleepiness, and a cutoff of 15 points for the PDSS for both sexes should be used in the definition of excessive daytime sleepiness. For the other parameters, stress management, depressive mood (feelings of sadness) and health perception, different cutoff points are suggested for boys and girls.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Chronotype reflects time of day preferences for performing daily activities. Previous research within Asian and European cohorts indicates evening chronotype is associated with elevated cardiometabolic risk. However, evidence is limited from population-based US cohorts, particularly among women in whom evening chronotype prevalence may become higher after middle-age, coinciding with life stages associated with higher cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. This cross-sectional study evaluated associations of chronotype with overall cardiovascular health (CVH), health behaviors, and cardiometabolic risk factors among 506 women (mean age = 37 ± 16y, 62% racial/ethnic minority) in the American Heart Association (AHA)’s Go Red for Women Strategically-Focused Research Network cohort at Columbia University (New York City, NY, USA). Chronotype was assessed using the validated Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ) and categorized as “evening”, “intermediate”, and “morning” chronotypes. Health behaviors (diet, physical activity, and sleep) were assessed using validated questionnaires. Anthropometrics, clinical blood pressure, and blood biomarkers were assessed at the clinic visit. CVH was evaluated using the AHA Life’s Simple 7 (LS7) metrics; LS7 scores of 0–8 and 9–14 were considered indicative of poor and moderate-to-high CVH, respectively. Linear and logistic regression models adjusted for age, race/ethnicity, education, health insurance, and menopausal status were used to examine associations of MEQ scores and chronotype categories with overall CVH, clinical cardiometabolic risk factors, and health behaviors. Overall, 13% of women identified as evening chronotypes, while 55% and 32% reported being intermediate and morning types. In linear models, higher MEQ scores were associated with higher AHA LS7 scores (β(SE) = 0.02(0.01); p = .014), indicative of more favorable CVH, and with health behaviors not included in the LS7. Higher MEQ scores were also associated with lower Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, i.e. better sleep quality, (β(SE) = ?0.07(0.02), p < .0001), lower insomnia severity (β(SE) = ?0.14(0.01), p < .0001), shorter time to fall asleep (β(SE) = ?0.28(0.14), p = .044), and less sedentary time (β(SE) = ?0.11(0.03), p = .001). In logistic regression models, evening chronotype, compared to intermediate/morning type, was associated with higher odds of having poor CVH (OR(95%CI):2.41(1.20–4.85)), not meeting AHA diet (OR(95%CI):2.89(1.59–5.23)) and physical activity guidelines (OR(95%CI):1.78(1.03–3.07)), and having short sleep (OR(95%CI):2.15(1.24–3.73)) or insomnia (OR(95%CI):2.69(1.53–4.75)). The evening type compared to morning type was also associated with being a current smoker (OR(95%CI):2.14(1.02–4.52)) and having poor sleep quality (OR(95%CI:2.35(1.27–4.37)) and long sleep onset latency (OR(95%CI:1.89(1.00–3.56)). In our cohort of women, evening chronotype was related to poor CVH, likely driven by its influence on health behaviors. These findings, although warranting confirmation prospectively in other populations, suggest chronotype is an important factor to consider and possibly target when designing lifestyle interventions for CVD prevention.  相似文献

We evaluated the performance of a consumer multi-sensory wristband (Fitbit Charge 2?), against polysomnography (PSG) in measuring sleep/wake state and sleep stage composition in healthy adults.

In-lab PSG and Fitbit Charge 2? data were obtained from a single overnight recording at the SRI Human Sleep Research Laboratory in 44 adults (19—61 years; 26 women; 25 Caucasian). Participants were screened to be free from mental and medical conditions. Presence of sleep disorders was evaluated with clinical PSG. PSG findings indicated periodic limb movement of sleep (PLMS, > 15/h) in nine participants, who were analyzed separately from the main group (n = 35). PSG and Fitbit Charge 2? sleep data were compared using paired t-tests, Bland–Altman plots, and epoch-by-epoch (EBE) analysis.

In the main group, Fitbit Charge 2? showed 0.96 sensitivity (accuracy to detect sleep), 0.61 specificity (accuracy to detect wake), 0.81 accuracy in detecting N1+N2 sleep (“light sleep”), 0.49 accuracy in detecting N3 sleep (“deep sleep”), and 0.74 accuracy in detecting rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep. Fitbit Charge 2? significantly (p < 0.05) overestimated PSG TST by 9 min, N1+N2 sleep by 34 min, and underestimated PSG SOL by 4 min and N3 sleep by 24 min. PSG and Fitbit Charge 2? outcomes did not differ for WASO and time spent in REM sleep. No more than two participants fell outside the Bland–Altman agreement limits for all sleep measures. Fitbit Charge 2? correctly identified 82% of PSG-defined non-REM–REM sleep cycles across the night. Similar outcomes were found for the PLMS group.

Fitbit Charge 2? shows promise in detecting sleep-wake states and sleep stage composition relative to gold standard PSG, particularly in the estimation of REM sleep, but with limitations in N3 detection. Fitbit Charge 2? accuracy and reliability need to be further investigated in different settings (at-home, multiple nights) and in different populations in which sleep composition is known to vary (adolescents, elderly, patients with sleep disorders).  相似文献

Dynamic changes in local sweat rates (Sw) and local evaporation rates from clothing (Ecl) have been observed during hot exposure. Four young male subjects wearing a cotton T-shirt and half shorts were exposed to 40 °C/50% for 1 h following exposure to 28 °C/50% for 30 min. Amount of water absorbed in clothing (Msw), clothing surface temperatures (Tcl), local heat flow rates, skin temperatures, body weight, rectal temperature, Sw and Ecl were continuously measured. Upon exposure to the heat, decrease in heat gain to the skin was observed as opposed to increase in Sw, Ecl, Msw and heat gain to the clothing surface.  相似文献

Daytime workers tend to have shorter sleep duration and earlier sleep onset during work days than on days off. Large individual differences in sleep onset and sleep duration may be observed on work days, but work usually synchronizes sleep offset to a similar time. The present study describes individual differences in sleep behaviour of 48 daytime workers (25 men, aged 20–58 years) from an iron ore mine in Northern Sweden. The aim of the study was to determine whether differences in sleep patterns during work days were associated with the outcomes of sleepiness and sleep complaints. Cluster analysis was used to group workers into two categories of sleep onset and sleep duration. The “Late Sleep Onset” cluster comprised workers who slept 1.30 h later than the “Early Sleep Onset” cluster (p < 0.0001 for all weekdays). The “Long Sleep Duration” cluster slept 1.10 h longer than the “Short Sleep Duration” cluster (p < 0.0002 for work nights). The “Late Sleep Onset” cluster reported less refreshing sleep (p < 0.01) and had lower sufficient sleep scores (p < 0.01) than the “Early Sleep Onset” cluster. The “Short Sleep Duration” cluster also reported lower scores for sufficient sleep (p < 0.04) than the “Long Sleep Duration” cluster. For combined characteristics (phase and duration), workers with a late phase and short sleep duration reported greater sleep debt and sleepiness than workers with an early phase and short sleep duration (p < 0.02). Work schedule and commuting time modulate both sleep phase and sleep duration independently. Workers, classified as having an intermediate sleep phase preference, can organize their sleep time in order to minimize sleep debt and sleepiness symptoms. Individual differences in sleep phase and duration should be considered when promoting well-being at work even among groups with similar sleep needs. In order to minimize sleep debt and sleepiness symptoms, successful sleep behaviour could be promoted involving extend use of flexitime arrangement (i.e. later starting times) and reduce use of alarm clocks.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the different thermal conditions of the arm and leg due to wearing different types of clothing during the afternoon could modulate the circadian rhythm of body temperature and subjective sleep quality. Six healthy female volunteers were studied twice with two types of clothing, leaving the arm and leg covered or uncovered. The environmental chamber was controlled at 24 ± 0.5°C and 50 ± 5% RH during wakefulness and 28 ± 0.5°C and 50 ± 5% RH during night sleep. One type of clothing consisted of long-sleeved shirts and full-length trousers (Type L, 989 g, 0.991 clo); the other type was of half-sleeved shirts and knee-length trousers (Type H, 750 g, 0.747 clo). One testing session lasted for 16 h from 14:00 to 06:00 h the next morning. Subjects wore Type L or Type H clothing during the afternoon exposure (14:00 - 19:00), and Type L clothing during the evening (19:00 - 22:30 h) and the night sleep (22:30 - 06:00 h). Results were as follows. (1) When wearing Type H rather than Type L clothing, skin temperatures of the arm and leg were significantly lower during the time of exposure, and increased more after the evening. (2) Rectal temperature was not significantly different between the two types of clothing except during the early part of the exposure period, but it decreased during the evening by a significantly greater amount when wearing Type H clothing. (3) Subjective sleep quality was not significantly different between the two clothing types. These results suggest that afternoon exposure of the arm and leg to a slightly cool environment does not have a strong after-effect on the body temperature and subjective sleep quality.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Social jetlag has recently attracted attention as the circadian misalignment between biological and social clocks. We aimed to examine social jetlag and its effect on daytime sleepiness and daily functions in patients with narcolepsy, behaviorally induced insufficient sleep syndrome (BIISS) and delayed sleep-wake phase disorder (DSPD). The levels of social jetlag (SJLmid) and sleep-corrected social jetlag (SJLsc) were calculated for each patient, and the effect of these social jetlag-related parameters on daytime sleepiness and daily functions were examined. Objective sleepiness measured by the mean sleep latency in the multiple sleep latency test, subjective sleepiness assessed by the Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS), health-related quality of life (HRQoL) assessed by the SF-8 health survey, and incidences of mistakes in daily activities, traffic accidents and near-miss events related to daytime sleepiness were compared among the narcolepsy (n = 39), BIISS (n = 87) and DSPD (n = 28) groups. Both SJLmid and SJLsc showed a negative correlation with physical HRQoL in patients with narcolepsy and a positive correlation with the ESS score in patients with DSPD. In patients with BIISS, SJLsc reflected sleep loss rather than circadian misalignment; moreover, SJLsc was not associated with daytime sleepiness and daily functions. Social jetlag was not associated with incidences of mistakes in daily activities, traffic accidents and near-miss events.

The state of social jetlag and its association with daily functions differed among the narcolepsy, BIISS and DSPD groups. Social jetlag represented sleep debt in BIISS, circadian misalignment in narcolepsy and both in DSPD. Our results thus show that the clinical manifestations and significance of social jetlag differ depending on the underlying sleep disorders.  相似文献

The influence of particle softness on the Poisson's ratio of model solids has been investigated. We have used the repulsive inverse power potential (~r n for particle separations, r) between the particles, which is conveniently characterised by one adjustable parameter, ? = 1/n. For large ?, the interaction is soft whereas in the ? → 0 limit the particles approach hard spheres. The pressure and elastic constants of the solid phase have been calculated at various densities with constant temperature molecular dynamics (MD) simulation for a range of the softness parameter in the range, n>12. Density-softness surfaces of these quantities were determined which revealed hitherto unrecorded trends in the behaviour of the elastic moduli and Poisson's ratio. It was found that the pressure and some elastic properties, e.g. the C12 elastic constant and the bulk modulus, manifest a maximum value or ‘ridge’ on this surface. The height of the maximum increases with density and interaction steepness (small ?). The Poisson's ratio varies essentially linearly with softness and is relatively insensitive to density. However, at higher densities and for larger steepness a considerable lowering of the Poisson's ratio is observed. In order to identify possible mechanisms for reducing the value of Poisson's ratio, ν, the fluctuation and Born-Green contributions were analysed. Changes in the Poisson's ratio are mainly determined by the fluctuation contribution which can cause a considerable decrease as well as increase of its value.  相似文献
