Bierhorst , David W. (Cornell U., Ithaca, N. Y.) Symmetry in Equisetum. Amer. Jour. Bot. 46(3) : 170-179. Illus. 1959.—A total of 118 leaf whorls and corresponding nodes from a total of 9 species of Equisetum were studied in serial cross-section. The number of whorls having the same leaf number as the 2 adjacent ones was 67. The size of the arc measured in degrees of circumference occupied by each leaf, as well as its position relative to leaves of adjacent whorls were measured. The disposition of the internodal and trans-nodal vascular strands was determined for each of the nodes. The average per cent deviations from theoretical leaf size within whorls were: whorls not involved in change in leaf number, 3.9; those with fewer leaves than the one below, 9.5; those with more leaves than one above, 7.1; those with more leaves than one below, 9.4; those with different leaf number from the 2 adjacent ones, 12.5. In Equisetum, it is a general rule that (1) a leaf which falls directly above a leaf in the next whorl where the younger whorl possesses fewer leaves than the older one is usually the largest leaf within its whorl, (2) a leaf which falls directly below a leaf in the next younger whorl where the younger whorl possesses fewer leaves than the older one is usually the smallest leaf within its whorl, (3) a leaf which falls directly above a leaf in the next older whorl where the younger whorl possesses a greater number of leaves than the older one is usually the smallest leaf in its whorl, and (4) a leaf which falls directly below a leaf in the next younger whorl where the younger whorl possesses a greater number of leaves than the older one is usually the largest leaf within its whorl. The numerous variations in the disposition of vascular tissue associated with changes in leaf number are described. Double leaf traces which originate in various ways are common, as well as vertical strands traversing the nodes. The leaf trace system is considered to be determined by the number, position, and relative sizes of leaf primordia. The disposition of the trans-nodal protoxylem seems to be determined to a large extent by the proximity of the leaf traces above and below the node.  相似文献

The Arabidopsis flower consists of four concentric whorls of organs. The first (outermost) whorl consists of four sepals and the fourth (innermost) whorl is made up of two carpels. Cell fate in the first and fourth whorls was studied using X-ray-induced yellow ch-42 sectors. Sector boundaries were found to be non-random around the two whorls and four generalizations relating the marked and unmarked tissues were deduced. In the sepal and carpel whorls the smallest sectors of marked and unmarked tissue were found to be one half of a sepal and one half of a carpel, respectively. A detailed frequency-distance map of the floral primordium was made and found to be a ridge with the fourth whorl carpels at the summit and the first whorl transverse sepal pair at the base. Consideration of: the rate of loss of chimerism in the inflorescence meristem, the frequency-distance across the flower and the frequency-distance between successive flowers, was used to produce an abstract model of the inflorescence meristem.  相似文献

A study of the floral ontogeny of Popowia was carried out to investigate the phyllotactic arrangement of the floral organs and occurring trends in the androecium of Annonaceae. The flower buds arise on a common stalk in the axil of a bract. Three sepals emerge in quick succession and are rapidly overrun in size by two whorls of petals. The androecium is initiated centripetally in successive whorls. A first whorl of three pairs of outer staminodes emerges opposite the outer petals and is followed by nine staminodes. Next a whorl of nine fertile stamens arises in alternation with the second whorl of staminodes. The carpels arise in three alternating whorls of nine. The nature of the perianth parts is morphologically identical. The process of cyclisation of the androecium from a spiral is discussed for Annonaceae and Magnoliidae in general. The inception of the three outer stamen pairs is a widespread reductive step for multistaminate androecia in the process of oligomerization. It is proposed to define the cyclic inception of numerous stamens as whorled polyandry, being an intermediate step between true polyandry and a reduced stamen number in whorls. The absence of a cup-like shape in the carpel development is related to the flattened receptacle.  相似文献

用扫描电镜观察了囊瓣木(Saccopetalum prolificum)和刺果番荔枝(Annona muricata)花器官的形态发生过程。刺果番荔枝和囊瓣木花被片均为3轮,其中刺果番荔枝内轮花被片数目为3枚、5枚或7枚。囊瓣木花原基最初为圆锥形,最外轮3枚花被片很快发生,之后中、内轮花被片原基连续发生,3轮花被片互生。此时花原基为六边形。花被片分化完成时,圆球形雄蕊原基沿六边形花原基的6个边螺旋向心发生,最终近轮状排列于花原基上。刺果番荔枝的雄蕊较多(约1000枚),首先在中轮花被片所对的花原基边缘发生,之后大量雄蕊螺旋状发生。心皮分化的早期阶段,与雄蕊原基很相似,当心皮数目逐渐增多时,不能分辩出发生的顺序。成熟花中,心皮和雄蕊全都被毛覆盖,毛具有粘住传粉滴的作用。  相似文献

In both male and female flowers of H. morsus-ranae the primordia of the floral appendages appear in an acropetal succession consisting of alternating trimerous whorls. In the male flower a whorl of sepals is followed by a whorl of petals, three whorls of stamens, and a whorl of filamentous staminodes. The mature androecial arrangement therefore consists of two antisepalous stamen whorls, an antipetalous whorl of stamens, and antipetalous staminodes. Shortly before anthesis, basal meristematic upgrowth between filaments of adjacent whorls produces paired stamens, joining Whorls 1 and 3, and Whorl 2 with the staminodial whorl. A central domelike structure develops between the closely appressed filaments of the inner stamen and staminodial whorl, giving the structure a lobed appearance. After petal inception in the female flower a whorl of antisepalous staminodes develop, each of which may bifurcate to form a pair of staminodes. During staminode development a girdling primordium arises by upgrowth at the periphery of the floral apex. The girdling primordium rapidly forms six gynoecial primordia, which then go on to produce six free styles with bifid stigmas. Intercalary meristem activity, below the point of floral appendage attachment, leads to the production of a syncarpous inferior ovary with six parietal placentae. The styles and carpels remain open along their ventral sutures. During the final stages of female floral development, several hundred ovules develop along the carpel walls, and three nectaries develop dorsally and basally on the three antipetalous styles.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to further describe the relationships between facial hair whorls and temperament in cattle. Cattle (n=1636) from six commercial cattle auctions in Colorado and Texas were observed. Whorl location was classified according to lateral position (left, right, or middle) and height (high: above the top of the eye, middle: at eye level, low: below the bottom of the eye). A 4-point temperament score was used to rate each animal while it was in the auction ring. Cattle with a score of 1 remained calm and stood still or walked around, and those with a score of 4 were highly agitated and hit the ring fence, walls, partitions, or people with its head. The cattle observed were 75% Bos taurus beef breeds, 21% Holstein dairy cattle, 3% Bos indicus beef breeds, and 1% non-Holstein dairy breeds. Ten percent of cattle surveyed had no facial hair whorl, while 86% had a single spiral hair whorl, of which 47% had middle-middle whorl placement. Animals with a high whorl position or no hair whorl had higher temperament scores (P=0.01). Cattle with low whorls were more likely to have greater lateral displacement of whorls off of the centerline than cattle with high or middle whorls (P<0.01). Abnormally shaped whorls were more common on cattle with low whorls (P<0.01) and on cattle with lateral whorls located off of the centerline (P<0.01). Cattle with hair whorls on the centerline had more variable temperament scores (P=0.04). Beef cattle had more abnormal whorls than Holsteins (P<0.01). Temperament scores showed that Holsteins were calmer than beef cattle (P<0.01). Facial hair whorls in cattle may be a useful management tool in assessing which animals may become disturbed in novel environments.  相似文献

Cells mitigate ER stress through the unfolded protein response (UPR). Here, we report formation of ER whorls as an effector mechanism of the ER stress response. We found that strong ER stress induces formation of ER whorls, which contain ER-resident proteins such as the Sec61 complex and PKR-like ER kinase (PERK). ER whorl formation is dependent on PERK kinase activity and is mediated by COPII machinery, which facilitates ER membrane budding to form tubular-vesicular ER whorl precursors. ER whorl precursors then go through Sec22b-mediated fusion to form ER whorls. We further show that ER whorls contribute to ER stress-induced translational inhibition by possibly modulating PERK activity and by sequestering translocons in a ribosome-free environment. We propose that formation of ER whorls reflects a new type of ER stress response that controls inhibition of protein translation.Subject terms: Endoplasmic reticulum, Collective cell migration  相似文献

Summary The whorls of rough endoplasmic reticulum (rER) in the exocrine pancreatic cells of starved newts and clawed toads were examined by a freeze-fracture technique. The whorl appeared to be roughly ovoidal in shape and composed of tightly packed, narrow cisternae arranged like the layers of an onion. The clusters of interdigitating projections of the cisternal membranes were located at several places on the whorl. Some of these projections extended to the vesicular rER around the whorl. The fenestra-like, raised or hollowed craters were seldom seen on the fractured membrane faces of the whorls in the exocrine pancreatic cells of the starved newts.  相似文献

We propose a general developmental model that explains the evolutionary origin, diversification, and inheritance of pellicle strip patterns in phototrophic euglenids. Dividing cells of Euglena gracilis, E. viridis, and Phacus similis were observed with scanning electron microscopy in order to study the morphogenesis of posterior whorls of strip reduction. We found evidence that constant whorl numbers are maintained through cell division because of organized strip growth before and during cytokinesis. Alternating nascent strips form a new whorl of strip reduction at each of the anterior and posterior ends of daughter cells. Strips that terminated to form posterior whorls in the mother cell change in length during the development of daughter cells. In the mother cells of E. gracilis, the strips forming whorls I and II grow to become whorls II and III, respectively, in the daughter cells; the strips forming whorl III in the mother cell lengthen and meet with other strips already present at the posterior tip of daughter cells. This process of whorl morphogenesis during asexual reproduction is consistent with known variation in pellicle strip patterns and suggests that heterochrony played a major role in the ultrastructural evolution of phototrophic euglenids.  相似文献

Amphibious mollusks of the genus Cecina in the littoral and supralittoral of the Sea of Japan are represented by three species: Cecina manchurica A. Adams, 1861; C. tatarica (Schrenck, 1867); and C. scarlatoi Prozorova, 1996. Additional data on the morphology of the shell and radula are provided. Indices for the identification of adult decollated and corroded shells of these species which retained only 3.0–2.5 last whorls are proposed: (1) the ratio of the width of the ultimate whorl (without aperture) to the length of the ultimate and penultimate whorls and (2) the ratio of the width of the third whorl (from the bottom) to the width of the ultimate whorl (without aperture).  相似文献

In this report we describe three monoclonal antibodies which detect prepatterning events preceding the appearance of visible tips in Polysphondylium pallidum whorls. A spatial and temporal analysis of the antigens against which these antibodies are directed reveals that the radial distribution of arms within whorls has its origins in an initial global amplification of tip-specific antigens over the surface of very early whorl masses. This two-dimensional distribution becomes restricted with time to a single dimension, a smooth distribution of antigen in a band about the equator of the whorl mass. This equatorial distribution breaks up into patches which eventually become visible tips. These results reveal that a spatial pattern can arise from a smooth prepattern, and grow through a series of intermediates characteristic of the symmetry breaking model first described by A. Multilamellar whorls were demonstrated by transmission electron microscopy to be associated with sporozoites and all generations of merozoites of Eimeria tenella, in chicken cecal tissue fixed without tannic acid or ruthenium red at room temperature. Whorls were found within the parasitophorous vacuoles of recently invaded cells at all stages of development, suggesting a role in the formation of the host parasite interface. Whorls were also associated with intraluminal third-generation merozoites prior to host cell invasion and appeared to be secreted directly through the pellicle. Membranous sheaths, shown by serial sectioning to be derived from intracellular whorl material, were observed enveloping some intraluminal merozoites. In many third-generation merozoites, whorl material was located within discrete novel organelles (here termed lamellosomes) located in the apical region. These densely staining spherical organelles were morphologically distinct from micronemes and rhoptries and were one-third the size of dense granules. These findings confirm that whorls are nonartifactual secretions whose lamellar organization is lost during normal fixation on ice without tannic acid. It is hypothesized that whorls secreted prior to invasion are involved in protection of the motile zoite, immune evasion, or some aspect of gliding motility.  相似文献

Coronate polyps are unique among cnidarians in having a complete peridermal tube, a ring canal, and four radial canals or pores at their oral region. Moreover, most of these species possess tooth whorls that narrow the gastric cavity considerably. Using fluorescence-labeled prey, it was demonstrated that the ring canal is not involved in digestion or redistribution of nutrients but possibly serves as a hydrostatic flex point for the fast retraction of the tentacle crown into the exoskeleton. The tooth whorls considerably affect the localization of digestion activities by blocking the passage of large prey fragments. Hence, endocytosis in a coronate species with tooth whorls occurred around the uppermost tooth whorl whereas, in a species lacking tooth whorls endocytosis occurred at the basal end. To meet the high nutrient demands of the basal region, nutrients must be redistributed in the species with tooth whorls. The extra energy required for this redistribution could be an important disadvantage of tooth whorls.  相似文献

On the small oceanic island of Chichijima, two endemic species of land snails, Mandarina mandarina and M. chichijimana, have discrete distributions separated by a hybrid zone. This study investigates the potential of hybridization as a source of morphological novelty in these snails. Mandarina mandarina possesses a shell with a higher whorl expansion rate and a smaller protoconch than M. chichijimana, relative to shell size. The number of whorls and shell size of M. mandarina do not differ from those of M. chichijimana, because the effect of higher expansion rate on number of whorls and size of the former is compensated for by its smaller protoconch. The whorl expansion rate and protoconch diameter of the individuals from the hybrid populations are intermediate or typical of either of the two species, and their average values show clinal changes along the hybrid zone. However, the hybrid populations include exceptionally high shells with many whorls and flat shells with few whorls, which are never found in the pure populations of either species. In addition, gradual increases in variance in shell height and number of whorls were found from the edges to the center of the hybrid zone. A combination of low expansion rate (typical of M. chichijimana) and a small protoconch (typical of M. mandarina) produces a shell with an extremely large number of whorls because of the geometry of shell coiling. However, the combination of high expansion rate and a large protoconch produces a shell with an extremely small number of whorls. Because of the correlation between the number of whorls and shell height, shells with an exceptional number of whorls possess an extraordinarily high or flat spire. Hybrids can inherit a mosaic of characters that, as they play out during growth, lead to novel adult morphologies. These findings emphasize the importance of hybridization as a source of morphological variation and evolutionary novelty in land snails.  相似文献

Representatives of the genus Melanopsis have an extraconch, a shell structure unusual for gastropods, which envelops several whorls, including the last whorl and up to two preceding whorls. Microstructural features of the shell are studied for the first time, using M. impressa Krauss as an example. It is shown that the extraconch is formed by the outer crossed-lamellar layer.  相似文献

Water striders have remarkable water-repellent legs that enable them to stand effortlessly and move quickly on water.Fluidphysics indicates this feature is due to a surface-tension effect caused by the special hierarchical structure of the legs,which arecovered with a large number of inclined setae with fine nanogrooves inducing water resistance.This inspires us to fabricatespecial water-repellent structure on functional surfaces through the cooperation between the surface treatment and the surfacemicro-and nanostructures,which may bring great advantages in a wide variety of applications.In this paper we present aprocedure for fabricating biomimetic water strider legs covered with setae using Polycarbonate Track-Etched(PCTE)membranesas templates.By choosing appropriate membrane lengths,diameters,pitches and densities of the setae,the biomimeticlegs can be fabricated conveniently and at a low cost.Furthermore we investigated the relationship between stiffness of themolding materials,high aspect ratio and density,which affect the fidelity of fabrication and self adhesion,to optimize thestability of setae.The knowledge we gained from this study will offer important insights into the biomimetic design and fabricationof water strider setae.  相似文献
