Summary Selection might favor group foraging and social feeding when prey are distributed in patches that do not last long enough for a solitary individual to consume more than a small fraction of them (Pulliam and Millikan 1982; Pulliam and Caraco 1984). Here we considered the foraging behavior of a social spider, Anelosimus eximius, in light of this ephemeral resource hypothesis. This species builds large webs in which members cooperate to capture a wide variety of different sizes and types of prey, many of which are very large. The capture success of this species was very high across all prey sizes, presumably due to the fact that they foraged in groups. Group consumption times in natural colonies for all prey larger than five mm were less than the time that dead insects remained on the plastic sheets that we used as artificial webs. Solitary consumption estimates, calculated from the rate at which laboratory individuals extracted insect biomass while feeding, were the same as the residence times of insects on artificial webs in the field for insects between 6 and 15 mm in length and were significantly longer than the persistence of insects on plastic sheets for all larger insects. Large prey, that contribute substantially to colony energy supplies, appeared to be ephemeral resources for these spiders that could not be consumed by a single spider in the time they were available. These factors made the food intake of one spider in a group less sensitive to scavenging by others and could act to reinforce the social system of this species. 相似文献

Diet, habitat use and relative abundance of pampas fox Pseudalopex gymnocercus were studied in grassland, sand dune, and scrubland habitats, on the Bahía San Blas and Isla Gama Reserve, Argentina. Scat contents showed a generalist diet, where mammals, insects, and fruits were the main food items. Dietary composition differed among habitats; fruits were mainly consumed in sand dunes; insects, mammals, and fruits predominated in grassland; while insects and mammals were frequent in scrubland habitat. The European hare was the most common vertebrate prey and had the major contribution to the biomass of consumed prey. Pampas fox was the most common carnivore of the reserve and used all available habitats, frequenting more regularly scrubland and sand dune than grassland habitat.

The behaviour of Diplonychus rusticum feeding on chironomid larvae has been investigated under laboratory conditions. Changes in the percentage of material extracted from prey indicated that feeding for the first two minutes enabled the predator to obtain approximately 33% of the available food; feeding for 10 minutes resulted in only 60% extraction. Comparing the percentage of each prey consumed by D. rusticum exposed to various prey densities, it was apparent that predators were more wasteful and ate less of each prey as chironomid density increased. Because the rate of food intake declined as a greater proportion of each prey was extracted, predators exposed to high chironomid densities reduced the amount of each prey consumed thereby conforming to a simple optimal feeding model. 相似文献

In Lake G»rdsjön (Southwest Sweden), liming as an experimental improvement of living conditions for pelagic algae, resulted in a significant increase of algal biomass and a reduction of mean cell size. The algal development was beneficial for small sized filter feeding zooplankton, particularly rotifers, which showed a significant increase. The increase in abundance of small sized zooplankton created better food conditions for the smaller instars, and thus a much better overall survival of Chaoborus larvae. The resulting, 6–7 times larger population of Chaoborus larvae significantly changed the structure of the crustacean zooplankton community. Bosmina coregoni, the fastest swimmer of the crustacean species suffered most and was strongly reduced by the increased predation from Chaoborus. The share of cladocerans decreased, while copepods increased in importance. 相似文献

Two comparable methods were used to study the feeding of four species of Daphnia on large spherical particles which differed in size and hardness. The first method used gut analysis to estimate the selectivities of daphnids feeding in a broad size range of a single particle type, including polystyrene beads (4–60 µm diameter) in the laboratory and Eudorina colonies (10–90 µm) in the field. In the second method, Daphnia of different sizes fed in a mixture of 6.5 µm Chlamydomonas and one of eight test particles. Smaller daphnids were less effective in feeding on large test particles. Nonlinear regression was therefore used to estimate the Daphnia body size at which the clearance rate on a test particle was reduced to 50% of that for Chlamydomonas. The results of both methods show that prey size and hardness are both very important in determining daphnid feeding selectivity. For a given particle size, soft algae (naked and gelatinous flagellates) are more readily ingested than hard algae (diatoms and dinoflagellates), and hard algae are more readily ingested than polystyrene beads. Daphnia can feed effectively on algae that are 2–5 times larger than the largest ingestible bead. 相似文献

The ontogenetic changes in the distribution, abundance, and size of rhabdoids were examined in an undisturbed laboratory population of Dugesia polychroa. Irrespective of triclad age, rhabdoids in the epidermis and parenchyma were more abundant on the dorsal than the ventral side of the body. No significant differences were found in the abundance of epidermal or parenchymal rhabdoids among the anterior, medial, and posterior regions of the body. Rhabdoid number and size changed significantly with triclad age, with a marked depression coinciding with the onset of cocoon production. Rhabdoid discharge was correlated with physical and/or physiological disturbance and occurred in the absence of any overt environmental disturbance. Simple allometric relationships were observed between rhabdoid size and number on one hand and body plan area on the other. Different allometric trends were observed from field-collected individuals compared to the undisturbed laboratory population. The potential function of rhabdoids in the Tricladida is discussed in light of these findings. 相似文献

In the shallow and eutrophic subtropical aquatic ecosystems, which it generally inhabits, the omnivorous copepod Mesocyclops thermocyclopoides encounters a wide variety of animal prey types including ciliates, rotifers, and cladocerans. We studied prey selectivity in laboratory-reared adult females of this species given a choice of (i) prey types belonging to different taxa (ciliates, rotifers, cladocerans, and cyclopoid nauplii), and (ii) different prey species within a taxonomic group differing in body size, morphology or behaviour. We also tested the effect of different proportions of prey species on its selectivity. Prey type proportion had no significant effect on selectivity of the copepod, nor was there any evidence of switching based on the relative abundance of prey. Among the ciliate prey species tested, the largest species, Stylonychia mytilus was positively selected regardless of its relative abundance, while the smallest, S. notophora was selected only when its density was higher. Offered a choice of three species of a brachionid rotifer differing in size, the copepod selected the largest of them, Brachionus calyciflorus, and avoided the smallest B. angularis. The evasive rotifer Hexarthra mira was also avoided. When prey choice included three cladoceran species Daphnia similoides, Moina macrocopa and Ceriodaphnia cornuta, the copepod selected the intermediate-sized M. macrocopa regardless of the abundance of the other two species. Although it fed on Mesocyclops nauplii when there was no choice, M. thermocyclopoides avoided them when alternative food was available. In a multispecies prey choice test, the copepod selected predominantly the rotifer B. calyciflorus and the cladoceran M. macrocopa. We suggest that the prey selectivity patterns shown by M. thermocyclopoides are adaptive in that they lead to ingestion of the most profitable prey. 相似文献

We tested some predictions relating metabolic constraints offoraging behavior and prey selection by comparing food handlingand utilization in four sympatric shrew species: Sorex minutus(mean body mass = 3.0 g), S. araneus (8.0 g), Neomys anomalus(10.0 g), and N. fodiens (14.4 g). Live fly larvae, mealwormlarvae, and aquatic arthropods were offered to shrews as smallprey (body mass <0.1 g). Live earthworms, snails, and smallfish were offered as large prey (>0.3 g). The larvae werethe high-nutrition food (>8 kJ/g), and the other prey werethe low-nutrition food (<4 kJ/g). The smallest shrew, S.minutus, utilized (ate + hoarded) <30% of offered food, and the other species utilized >48% of food. The largerthe shrew, the more prey it ate per capita. However, highlyenergetic insect larvae composed 75% of food utilized by S.minutus and only >40% of the food utilized by the other
species. Thus, inverse relationships appeared between shrewbody mass and mass-specific food mass utilization and betweenshrew body mass and mass-specific food energy utilization:the largest shrew, N. fodiens, utilized the least food massand the least energy quantity per 1 g of its body mass. Also, the proportion of food hoarded by shrews decreased with increase
in size of shrew. With the exception of S. araneus, the sizeof prey hoarded by the shrews was significantly larger thanthe size of prey eaten. Tiny S. minutus hoarded and ate smallerprey items than the other shrews, and large N. fodiens hoardedlarger prey than the other shrews. 相似文献

The food selection and diet of juvenile three-spined sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus L.) was studied in the littoral of a brackish-water sea area. The sampling stations were located in a eutrophicated area, where the plankton was characterized by rotifers, in a noneutrophicated zone, where copepods predominated, and in the intermediate zone, characterized by cladocerans. In all areas the fish preferred microcrustaceans to rotifers, but they did not feed strictly according to the size-selection hypothesis. Nor did they take the most abundant prey species. With some exceptions the species chiefly eaten by and also selected by fish, were those which had the largest biomass in the plankton. 相似文献

Functional response curves of fourth instar larvae ofChaoborus flavicans preying on two size classes ofDaphnia longispina were examined throughout three summer seasons in a small forest lake. Data for each size class were fitted to Holling's disc equation. The parametersa (attack rate) andTh (handling time) were calculated for each prey size from these curves. Attack rate was greater and handling time was shorter for small (0.77 mm) than for large (1.82 mm)Daphnia. In 1:1 mixture of these prey size classes the predation rates ofChaoborus on smallDaphnia at prey densities above 20 l–1 were greater than predicted from the single size-class experiments. The observed predation rates on largeDaphnia were lower than predicted at all prey densities. Since both single size-class and two size-class experiments were run during the same period of time the difference in observed and predicted predation rates could not be attributed to seasonal changes in prey preference ofChaoborus larvae. In experiments with a concentrated mixture of lake zooplankton (dominated byD. longispina)Chaoborus preference forDaphnia decreased as prey body size increased. There was no obvious correlation between selectivity coefficients and size-frequency distributions ofDaphnia. When medium-sizedDaphnia were omitted from calculations the preference of small over large prey did not differ significantly from the predictions of the single size-class model. 相似文献

As a prerequisite for models of foraging behaviour of the whelk, Morula marginalba Blainville (Muricidae), the effects of variation in density of prey on the rate of feeding of the predator were examined in field conditions for three coexisting species of prey. Densities of prey used were those at which the prey, two limpets and a barnacle, occurred naturally in the rocky intertidal habitat.Large limpets, Cellana tramoserica (Sowerby) can resist attacks by predatory gastropods by raising the mantle over the outside of the shell. These experiments showed that no C. tramoserica were killed by Morula marginalba even at very great densities and with no alternative prey present. For the small limpet Patelloida latistrigata (Angas), one of the whelk's most highly preferred prey, juveniles were eaten 1.4 times as fast as adults. Fitting the random predator equation gave greater attack coefficients and shorter handling times for juvenile than adult limpets.Sizes of both predator and prey affected rates of eating barnacles, Tesseropora rosea (Krauss), but not in a simple way. Whelks of 15-mm aperture length ate adult barnacles 4.2 times faster than did 12-mm whelks, but there was no significant difference in the rates at which the two sizes of snail ate juvenile barnacles.Rates of feeding on T. rosea and Patelloida latistrigata increased significantly with prey density. These results form a basis for including the density of prey in models of spatial dispersion of the predatory gastropod Morula marginalba. 相似文献

Prey selection behaviour of three-spined sticklebacks, Gasterosteus aculeatus L., was studied in two experiments. Where possible, the experimental apparatus satisfied the assumptions of the simplest optimal diet model (the basic prey model); prey were presented sequentially, the fish could not search for and handle prey at the same time, and net energy gain, handling time and encounter rate were fixed. Experiment 1 presented fish with a range of Asellus sizes so that pursuit ( p ) and handling ( h ) time could be related to prey size. Published energy values of Asellus together with pursuit and handling times were used to calculate E /( p+h ) for Asellus measuring 3,4,5,6,7 and 9 mm. Pursuit times did not differ with prey size but handling times did. E /( p+h ) was very variable particularly at the larger prey sizes. Experiment 2 presented fish with two sequences of prey differing in the encounter rate with the most profitable prey sizes. Fish did not select the diet predicted by the basic prey model tending to always ignore the largest prey even when net energy gain would have been maximized by including them in the diet. Further analysis showed that the probability of a prey size being taken was a function of prey size, fish stomach fullness and encounter rate. It is concluded that the basic prey model is too simple to capture the behaviour of the fish. One of its main faults is that the changing state of the fish through the feeding bout is ignored. 相似文献

To predict the impacts of climate change on animal populations, we need long-term data sets on the effects of annual climatic
variation on the demographic traits (growth, survival, reproductive output) that determine population viability. One frequent
complication is that fecundity also depends upon maternal body size, a trait that often spans a wide range within a single
population. During an eight-year field study, we measured annual variation in weather conditions, frog abundance and snake
reproduction on a floodplain in the Australian wet-dry tropics. Frog numbers varied considerably from year to year, and were
highest in years with hotter wetter conditions during the monsoonal season (“wet season”). Mean maternal body sizes, egg sizes
and post-partum maternal body conditions of frog-eating snakes (keelback, Tropidonophis mairii, Colubridae) showed no significant annual variation over this period, but mean clutch sizes were higher in years with higher
prey abundance. Larger females were more sensitive to frog abundance in this respect than were smaller conspecifics, so that
the rate at which fecundity increased with body size varied among years, and was highest when prey availability was greatest.
Thus, the link between female body size and reproductive output varied among years, with climatic factors modifying the relative
reproductive rates of larger (older) versus smaller (younger) animals within the keelback population. 相似文献

We report on the diet and feeding behaviour of a group of Geoffroy's marmosets (Callithrix geoffroyi) in an Atlantic forest fragment in south-eastern Brazil, studied during the period February 1993 to Januaray 1994. Major
food categories were gums (68.6%) fruits (15%), and small animal prey (invertebrates 14.6% and vertebrates 0.8%). Dietary
changes were observed between the wet and dry seasons, although they were not statistically significant. Insects and gums
were consumed throughout the year but fruits were more prevalent in the diet in the wet season. Plant species exploited for
their gums includedInga stipularis, followed byAcacia paniculata, Paulinia carpopodia, andBauhinia angulosa. Chemical analysis of the gum of the four species most used all presented high values for carbohydrates and crude proteins.
Fruits of an unidentified species of Myrtaceae (sp. 2) were consumed the most. Animal prey consisted mainly of insects, arachnids,
snails, and in three cases, lizards and frogs, with orthopterans being the most prevalent insect prey. This study demonstrates
thatC. geoffroyi efficiently exploits resources typically available in secondary and disturbed forest habitat. The main threat to the species
is forest destruction, degradation, and fragmentation, but the management of small forest fragments may be an effective corservation
strategy. 相似文献

In the Neusiedler See, Leptodora kindti appeared in the plankton in April/May; the growing season lasted until November. Its optimum conditions prevailed during the summer months, when densities of >500 ind. m–3 were recorded. First, males appeared by the mid/end of August, while maximum resting egg production occurred in September. At temperatures below 10 °C the population declined. At high population levels, L. kindti caused suppression of its preferred prey item, the juveniles of Diaphanosoma mongolianum. Twenty-five to 45% of juvenile Diaphanosoma can be eliminated by Leptodora. This predation impact is a pronounced but short-term event. During the periods of high Leptodora densities, a significant relationship between Leptodora predation and the death rate of Diaphanosoma is found. The older developmental instars of L. kindti are themselves endangered by the impact of planktivorous fish (i.e. Pelecus cultratus, Alburnus alburnus), which show a preference for Leptodora larger than 6 mm. Frequently, elimination by fish corresponds with high death rates of Leptodora. During the periods when adult Leptodora occurred in numbers >50 ind. m–3, 55% of the variance connected with its death rate can be attributed to fish predation. The success of this population of L. kindti is discussed within the framework of predator-prey interactions. 相似文献

The mechanisms underlying differential prey selection of two microcrustaceans by the common bladderwort (Utricularia vulgaris) were studied in the laboratory. Functional response experiments with single prey showed that Utricularia had a higher attack rate coefficient and a longer handling time coefficient with the cladoceran Polyphemus pediculus than with the cyclopoid copepod Eucyclops serrulatus. Observation of predation rate, defined as number of prey eaten per unit time, from direct behavioural observation on single prey species, showed a higher predation rate with Polyphemus than on Eucyclops, at low prey densities. The opposite pattern was found at high prey density. When the two prey were presented simultaneously to the predator, Eucyclops was preferred over Polyphemus. Results from the situation with two prey and some of the results from the direct behavioural observations support field data on the diet of Utricularia, which shows that cyclopoid copepods are selected more frequently than Polyphemus. 相似文献

Effects of temperature, prey type and prey size on gastric evacuation in small cod and whiting 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Gastric lavage was used to investigate the effects of temperature, prey type and prey size on gastric evacuation in small cod Gadus morhua and whiting Merlangius merlangus . The fish were fed to satiation and subsequently the stomach contents were sampled to determine the rate at which food was evacuated. Satiation meal size was positively related to temperature and differed between prey types. The gastric evacuation rate (GER) also tended to increase with temperature and varied with prey type. GER at temperatures of 11.3–12.7° C averaged 1.5–1.7 times higher than at 6–9.5° C. There was no significant difference (P>0.05) in the evacuation of lugworm Arenicola marina , sandeel Ammodytes spp., and herring Clupea harengus , but the GER of brown shrimp Crangon vulgaris was much slower (P<0.05). No significant changes in GER were observed when fish were fed on three different size groups of either herring or brown shrimp. In whiting, there was no significant difference in the GER of individual herring or brown shrimp when they were fed as single species meals or incorporated in meals containing a mixture of prey species. 相似文献

Laboratory experiments were conducted with two predatory fishes, Lagodon rhomboides (Linnaeus) and Syngnathus floridae (Jordan & Gilbert), to determine if prey selection was a result of predator preference or prey accessibility. Prey consisted of two species of caridean shrimp, Tozeuma carolinense (Kingsley) and Hippolyte zostericola (Smith), that commonly inhabit seagrass meadows. Natural diets of both predators revealed that selection ofTozeuma and Hippolyte was not related to their field densities. My experiments demonstrated that natural prey selection was a consequence of prey accessibility, not predator preference. Experiments examining the role of prey size in predator preference revealed that large individuals were significantly preferred over small individuals. Observations of prey behavior indicated that prey motion affected predator choice. These results suggest that predator preference was primarily determined by prey visibility and that the combined effects of prey size and motion contributed to the visibility of these prey. 相似文献
