The Emsian? through early Eifelian Onondaga Limestone of the Appalachian Basin was deposited in a topographic basin and on the carbonate platform which surrounded the basin on the west, north, and northeast. Onondaga strata thin from the platform into the basin. Two sedimentary cycles are present in the sub-Tioga Onondaga of eastern North America. The Edgecliff-Amherstburg represents an interval of transgression, in which epeiric seas spread over much of eastern North America. During the Nedrow-Lucas regression, the interior of the carbonate platform became restricted, resulting in the deposition of evaporites. The Moorehouse-Anderdon transgression continued through the deposition of the Tioga Bentonite, followed by the pre-Speeds-Dundee regression from the craton. Early Eifelian Appalachian Basin Onondaga brachiopod communities, arranged from nearshore to offshore, include the Atrypid-Megakozlowskiella, Atrypid-Levenea, Chonetid, Atlanticocoelia, Ambocoeliid, and Truncalosia Communities. The Onondaga-age Eastern Americas Realm is divided into the Appohimchi Province in the Appalachian Basin and the Michigan Basin-Hudson Bay Lowland Province in the Midwest. The provincial assignment of the James Bay region of Ontario is uncertain; the Eastern Townships of Quebec are near the boundaries both of the two provinces of the Eastern Americas Realm, and of the Eastern Americas Realm and the Old World Realm, the latter realm being probably in the Canadian Maritime Provinces.  相似文献

Lower Devonian late Emsian (Bois Blanc and Clear Creek Limestones; Schoharie Formation) level-bottom communities in New York, Michigan and Illinois were moderately cosmopolitan and diverse and dominated by brachiopods and solitary rugose corals. Subsequently (Early Eifelian?), there was an important episode of cratonal patch reef building in New York (Edgecliff Member, Onondaga Limestone), southwestern Ontario (Formosa Reef Limestone, lower Detroit River Group), and the Hudson Bay Lowland (Kwataboahegan Formation) by highly diverse endemic communities. The Edgecliff reefs were built by corals whereas the Formosa and Kwataboahegan reefs were built primarily by stromatoporoids. The strong correlation between high diversity and high endemism during the reef-building episode suggests that these communities contained numberous, small species populations belonging to several major taxa — an example of rapid speciation by geographic isolation and genetic drift.  相似文献

The transparency of polluted, hypereutrophic Onondaga Lake, New York, USA has improved substantially in the late 1980's as a result of reductions in phytoplankton biomass, in the absence of significant reductions in external phosphorus loading. Much of this improvement has been due to the occurrence of clearing events, e.g. sudden and dramatic increases in transparency. Field measurements, laboratory experiments, and modelling analyses were utilized to identify processes regulating phytoplankton standing crop during the spring to fall interval of 1987. Changes in the zooplankton community documented over the past decade support the conclusion that increased zooplankton grazing has contributed to improvements in transparency. Herbivores now represent a greater fraction of the zooplankton population and more efficient cladocerans are present in greater numbers. Biomanipulation practices, e.g. reestablishment of piscivorous species, designed to reduce the abundance of planktivorous fish species in Onondaga Lake, may serve to reduce pressure on the grazing community and thus result in further improvements in transparency.  相似文献

A brachiopod fauna comprising nine species in eight genera from three closely spaced stratigraphic horizons of the same stratigraphic section is described for the first time from the Laibin Limestone in the uppermost part of the Maokou Formation in the Guadalupian/Lopingian (G/L) GSSP section at Penglaitan, Guangxi Autonomous Region, South China. The brachiopod assemblages are bracketed between two conodont zones: Jinogondolella xuanhanensis Zone below and Jinogondolella granti Zone above and, therefore, they can be safely assigned to the latest Capitanian in age. However, all but one of the nine brachiopod species from the Laibin Limestone carry strong early Lopingian (Wuchiapingian) aspect. Thus, the discovery of this brachiopod fauna not only suggests that some Lopingian brachiopod species had already appeared in the late Guadalupian (Capitanian); more importantly, it has also highlighted the fact that both the previously noted pre-Lopingian life crisis (or end-Guadalupian or Middle Permian mass extinction) and Lopingian recovery/radiation actually occurred in late Capitanian times, sometime before the G/L chronostratigraphic boundary. So far, the Penglaitan GSSP section provides the highest-resolution disappearance patterns of different fossil groups around the G/L boundary.  相似文献

The large, thick-shelled, inarticulate brachiopod Eodinobolus forms many conspicuous deposits of shells in the Upper Ordovician limestones of central western New South Wales. Both in situ and reworked shell beds arc preserved at recurrent intervals through the successions, in similar facies of both transgressivc and regressive phases of deposition. In situ shell beds arc best developed in transgressivc sequences, with up to four generations of shells exhibited in the individual in situ beds. These monotypic and very low diversity shell beds are interpreted as having formed in marginal marine, quiet water conditions: (1) on the fringes of an offshore island (in part the Molong High of the Tasman Orogen), with the island still providing a fairly continuous supply of terrigenous material: and, (2) after submergence of the island, on the resulting terrigenous-free, major offshore Bahamas-like platform. This may imply that the shell beds developed in different salinity regimes. Possibly Eodinobolus was capable of tolerating a wider than normal range of salinity, from slightly brackish through normal marine, even to marginally hypersaline. However, in both settings, Eodinobolus, in its role as the dominant member of the respective pioneer community, colonized similar substrates in the low energy mud zone. This appears to suggest depositional environments most directly analogous to those of Palaeozoic virgianid pentamerides, and perhaps also comparable with some modern marginal marine oyster and mussel-bed occurrences. ?Ordovician, Brachiopoda, Eodinobolus, palaeoecology, facies, shell beds. Sedimentological analysis of the Keyser Limestone (Upper Silurian - Lower Devonian of the central Appalachians) indicates that its sediments were deposited in a range of marginal and shallow marine environments. Major depositional environments include: tidal flat, lagoon, barrier bar and island, and open marine shelf. Each major environment is represented by a lithofacies which is lithologically and faunally distinct. Tidal flat lithofacies are characterized by eurytopic organisms, including ostracodes, gastropods, stromatoporoids and blue-green algae. Lagoon lithofacies are dominated by bryozoans, brachiopods, ostracodes and stromatoporoids. Barrier lithofacies are characterized by rooted crinoids, encrusting bryozoans and robust brachiopods. Open shelf lithofacies contain a diverse fauna of cystoids, crinoids, bryozoans and brachiopods.
The distributions of faunal assemblages in the Keyser show no simple relationship to either water depth or distance from shore. They are, in general, related to the distributions of depositional environments.
Recurring associations of brachiopod genera were not found in the Keyser. With few exceptions, any genus may be found in any subtidal environment. Abundance of brachiopods is related to the abundance of local hard substrates (usually bryozoans).  相似文献

Microborings of endolithic organisms (e.g. algae, fungi) provide valuable indicators of paleoenvironments. The present study documents the distribution of microborings in fossil skeletal substrates from a spectrum of shelf to basinal facies in the Middle Devonian of New York. Endolithic boring in brachiopod shells and corals were prepared using special embedding-casting method and were examined and photographed with SEM. About 13 distinct types of microborings were discovered, presumably produced by microorganisms (pro- and eukaryotic), sponges, bryozoans and worms. Brachiopod holdfast etchings are reported for the first time from Paleozoic rocks. Microborings are non-randomly distributed among Middle Devonian facies. The highest diversity and abundance of borings occurs in diverse brachiopod and coral-bearing calcareous mudstones; which appear to represent shallow, well-aerated and low turbidity environments. Microboring diversity and frequency decreases markedly into mudstones and siltstones recording higher turbidity as well as into dark gray to black basinal shale facies. 'Leiorhynchus' brachiopods from probable deeper water, dysaerobic environments display very low diversity of micro-boring assemblages. They include brachiopod pedicle borings and one endolith which shows similarities to a modem cyanobacterium. If the latter is correctly identified, it brackets all of the studied facies within the photic zone.  相似文献

Low-diversity fossil assemblages interpreted as representing dysaerobic communities are common in the Phanerozoic rock record, and those composed of a single species have particular utility for recognizing the lowest bottom-water oxygen levels. An unusually high-diversity of clades including three rhynchonelliform, two linguliform, and one bivalve species occur in monospecific assemblages within Middle and Upper Devonian black shales of New York State. These six taxa are interpreted to be adapted to extremely reduced bottom-water oxygen levels as inferred from detailed sedimentological data and their repeated monospecific occurrence; however these groups represent two distinct ecologies. Three of these taxa are restricted to sediments deposited under the lowest dysaerobic conditions, while the other three taxa, unlike other fossils characteristic of reduced-oxygen levels, also occur in and are even dominant in high-diversity assemblages. The rhynchonellid brachiopod Eumetabolotoechia multicostata is the most abundant taxon within these units and has a remarkable ecological range as dominant from the lowest dysaerobic zone to near-normal marine oxygen levels. These Devonian groups, when present in monospecific assemblages, have utility for characterizing the lowest dysaerobic zone where trace fossil assemblages, most commonly used to describe these low-oxygen depositional settings, are absent or poorly developed.  相似文献

The Barnett Shale in north central Texas contains natural gas generated by high temperatures (120 to 150°C) during the Mississippian Period (300 to 350 million years ago). In spite of the thermogenic origin of this gas, biogenic sulfide production and microbiologically induced corrosion have been observed at several natural gas wells in this formation. It was hypothesized that microorganisms in drilling muds were responsible for these deleterious effects. Here we collected drilling water and drilling mud samples from seven wells in the Barnett Shale during the drilling process. Using quantitative real-time PCR and microbial enumerations, we show that the addition of mud components to drilling water increased total bacterial numbers, as well as the numbers of culturable aerobic heterotrophs, acid producers, and sulfate reducers. The addition of sterile drilling muds to microcosms that contained drilling water stimulated sulfide production. Pyrosequencing-based phylogenetic surveys of the microbial communities in drilling waters and drilling muds showed a marked transition from typical freshwater communities to less diverse communities dominated by Firmicutes and Gammaproteobacteria. The community shifts observed reflected changes in temperature, pH, oxygen availability, and concentrations of sulfate, sulfonate, and carbon additives associated with the mud formulation process. Finally, several of the phylotypes observed in drilling muds belonged to lineages that were thought to be indigenous to marine and terrestrial fossil fuel formations. Our results suggest a possible alternative exogenous origin of such phylotypes via enrichment and introduction to oil and natural gas reservoirs during the drilling process.  相似文献

Summary The Java Sea, one of the few modern tropical epeiric seas, is used as an analogue to examine oceanography, stratigraphy, and reefs of Devonian strata in the Appalachian and Michigan Basins. Nearshore patch reefs and offshore “pinnacle” reefs occur in both the Java Sea and the Emsian-Eifelian Onondaga Formation in the Appalachian Basin. Nearshore patch reefs also occur in the Eifelian Formosa Reef Limestone in the Michigan Basin. The Java Sea is characterized by quasi-estuarine circulation, in which runoff and rainfall exceed evaporation. Nutrient and organic matter influx from land and from estuarine upwelling contribute to organic rich facies during transgressions and sea level highstands. Similarly, we propose that high runoff from the Appalachian Mountains and from the Laurentian craton contributed to slightly reduced salinity in the Appalachian basin, including possible density stratification during Middle Devonian highstands. By contrast, the Michigan Basin was characterized by antiestuarine circulation, in which evaporation exceeded combined runoff and rainfall. Contemporaneous Emsian-Eifelian strata in the Michigan Basin are dolomite and dolomitic limestone, rather than cherty and muddy limestone typical of the Appalachian basin. Reef composition generally reflects oceanographic circulation regime within the epicontinental seas we examine. Nearshore reefs of the modern Java Sea and the Onondaga Formation (Appalachian Basin) are dominated by multilobate submassive, dendroid, and phaceloid corals, and virtually no platy corals or tabular stromatoporoids. Multilobate and phaceloid corals are better able to accommodate muddy sedimentation. By contrast, offshore pinnacle reefs of the Java Sea and nearshore reefs of the Formosa Reef Limestone are dominated by platyAcropora (modern) or tabular and laminar stromatoporoids (Devonian). The scarcity of tabular stromatoporoids, and the dominance of phaceloid corals and dendritic branching corals, in the Onondaga Formation (Appalachian Basin) are herein explained by localized high productivity conditions driven by quasi-estuarine circulation, rather than cool water. Quasi-estuarine circulation or localized topographic upwelling leading to highly productive coastal environments may be responsible for other Paleozoic examples of apparent cool-water carbonate deposition within the tropics, including the Ordovician of Eastern Canada.  相似文献

This paper presents the first Permian ostracod fauna discovered in Thailand. The ostracods are recovered from the Tak Fa Limestone (Middle Permian) in Phetchabun province, central Thailand. The ostracods belong to eight genera and 15 species. Four species are newly described: Sargentina phetchabunensis nov. sp., Geffenina bungsamphanensis nov. sp., Reviya subsompongensis nov. sp. and Bairdia takfaensis nov. sp. The ostracod assemblages characterize a shallow marine, near shore environment at the time of deposition. Except for one species, which shows palaeobiogeographical links between Central Thailand and South China, all the other species are endemic.  相似文献

A brachiopod fauna including 19 species of 17 genera from an exotic block in the Indus–Tsangpo suture zone in southern Tibet is described and illustrated. The brachiopod fauna is dominated by Martinia elegans and two new taxa: Jinomarginifera lhazeensis gen. et sp. nov. and Zhejiangospirifer giganteus sp. nov. The fauna is closely comparable with those from the middle and upper parts of the Wargal Formation and the Chhidru Formation in the Salt Range of Pakistan, the Chitichun Limestone in southern Tibet, and the Basleo area of West Timor, and these correlations suggest a Wuchiapingian age. The fauna exhibits substantial links with both peri–Gondwanan and Cathaysian faunas, which may imply that it is a seamount biota originally located in the southern margin of the Neotethys during the Late Permian, and was later (in the early Cenozoic) displaced and became sandwiched into younger marine deposits in the collision process between India and Eurasia.  相似文献

Whiting events—the episodic precipitation of fine-grained suspended calcium carbonates in the water column—have been documented across a variety of marine and lacustrine environments. Whitings likely are a major source of carbonate muds, a constituent of limestones, and important archives for geochemical proxies of Earth history. While several biological and physical mechanisms have been proposed to explain the onset of these precipitation events, no consensus has been reached thus far. Fayetteville Green Lake (New York, USA) is a meromictic lake that experiences annual whitings. Materials suspended in the water column collected through the whiting season were characterized using scanning electron microscopy and scanning transmission X-ray microscopy. Whitings in Fayetteville Green Lake are initiated in the spring within the top few meters of the water column, by precipitation of fine amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) phases nucleating on microbial cells, as well as on abundant extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) frequently associated with centric diatoms. Whiting particles found in the summer consist of 5–7 μm calcite grains forming aggregates with diatoms and EPS. Simple calculations demonstrate that calcite particles continuously grow over several days, then sink quickly through the water column. In the late summer, partial calcium carbonate dissolution is observed deeper in the water column. Settling whiting particles, however, reach the bottom of the lake, where they form a major constituent of the sediment, along with diatom frustules. The role of diatoms and associated EPS acting as nucleation surfaces for calcium carbonates is described for the first time here as a potential mechanism participating in whitings at Fayetteville Green Lake. This mechanism may have been largely overlooked in other whiting events in modern and ancient environments.  相似文献

New specimens of Cooksonia and Hostinella are described from the Bertie Group of Ontario and New York State, which is dated by faunas as latest Silurian (Přídolí). The rare plant fossils are unusual in that they are preserved in fine-grained, slightly argillaceous dolostones ('waterlime') rather than clastic rocks. At least two species of Cooksonia are present, one with ± globular sporangial morphology close to C. hemisphaerica Lang. Those with ellipsoidal/discoidal sporangia are compared with C. pertoni Lang, C .  paranensis Gerrienne et al . and C. bohemica Schweitzer, the latter represented by a single specimen from the Přídolí of the Czech Republic. However, the paucity of specimens, which prevents assessment of taphonomic influences on shape, combined with the absence of any anatomical features and the gross morphological simplicity of the fossils, precludes specific assignment. Specimens of Hostinella include one in which apices and a lateral basal structure resembling a root are preserved. It is concluded that the Laurentian assemblage of Ontario and New York State is less diverse and disparate than coeval assemblages, which are also preserved in marine rocks. Head proportions in the trilobite Triarthrus change by small but significant amounts with both lime and environment along a 'fossil' depth gradient in the Trenton Group of central New York. The putative zone species T. becki (Denmarkian Stage) and T. eatoni (post-Denmarkian; = T. becki , new synonymy) intermingle throughout the roughly two million year long sequence studied. The two represent extreme morphs in a graded spatio-temporal cline, not distinct species. Transgression as much as evolution accounts for their stratigraphic zonation. Clinal variation is expressed in the dependence of anatomical measures on the position of samples on a downslope transect parallel to bentonite beds, and on ordination score for community samples, a measure of environment that applies over time. Anatomy changes with environment in basically the same way it changes with time, and the amount of change over two million years in a given environment roughly equals the amount of change with environment at a given time. Compensated to a standard environment, anatomical measures follow a continuous trend that suggests an evolutionary random walk with non-random, directional drift. The case of Triarthrus illustrates that directional anatomical variation can have important components that are not strictly temporal and evolutionary in the normal sense.  相似文献

Abstract:  The Much Wenlock Limestone Formation of the Dudley inliers, West Midlands, contains one of the world's richest and most exquisitely preserved Silurian marine biotas. However, for most museum specimens, little is known of their exact provenance and mode of preservation. Detailed comparisons between outcrops and museum collections allow the identification of five faunal-lithological associations and numerous horizons of exceptional skeletal preservation. The associations are interpreted as a series of transient carbonate mid-platform environments extending from below storm wave-base to above fair-weather wave-base. Erosive surfaces, condensed sections, flooding surfaces and the stacking patterns of genetically related bed-sets (parasequences) have allowed the formation to be interpreted as a single third-order sequence stratigraphic cycle of sea-level change. The articulated preservation of taxa such as pelmatozoan echinoderms and trilobites can be attributed to either rapid burial by obrution deposits close to fair-weather wave-base or smothering by storm sequestered muds in slightly deeper-water settings. Such intervals of exceptional preservation are commonly associated with flooding surfaces, presumably reflecting reduced likelihood of reworking once rapid burial had taken place.  相似文献

The brachiopod fauna of the Chalonnes Limestone (Armorican Massif, France) is famous because of the presence of large, thick-shelled species first described by Oehlert (1881). One of these species originally assigned to Pentamerus davyi Oehlert, 1881 is here revised. External as well as internal characters of the shell allow its attribution to Zdimir robustus (Barrande, 1879), a species from the Trebotov Limestone in the Prague area. This reassignment is consistent with an Upper Emsian age for the Chalonnes Limestone.  相似文献

Fourier shape analysis of Pleurodictyum americanum and P. dividua , favositid tabulate corals, from the Middle Devonian Hamilton Group of New York State, indicates that colony growth form is variable within species between environments, but that the range of variability in growth form is static through time. Pleurpdictyum dividua displays a columnar morphotype; however, P. dividua and P. americanum cannot be discriminated from one another based on colony shape alone. A major prediction of the punctuated equilibrium model of evolution is morphological stasis throughout the duration of a species. Harmonic means of assemblages of P. americanum show no persistent temporal trends. The range of harmonic means present among the oldest assemblages (Centerfield Limestone) are comparable to those among the youngest assemblages (Windom Shale) and to those in the intervening intervals. Character stasis in colony growth form lasted throughout a 2.5-3.5 my interval. In tabulate corals, where reproductive modes such as fragmentation have not been demonstrated, growth form may be useful in interpreting ancient environments. In addition, the tempo of evolution of growth form can be analyzed when sufficient morphological data are available from a wide distribution of environments. Thus, Fourier shape analysis of growth form provides a powerful tool for paleontologists to interpret the ecology and evolution of colonial marine animals.  相似文献

We conducted a preliminary passive acoustic survey of the occurrence of freshwater drum, Aplodinotus grunniens, in the New York State Canal System (NYSCS) to demonstrate the usefulness of underwater sound monitoring in invasive species studies. Data from known populations of freshwater drum in Dale Hollow Reservoir and J. Percy Priest Lake in Tennessee and Lake Champlain in New York were used to validate freshwater drum call characteristics. Similar to more well studied marine members of the Sciaenidae, freshwater drum calls are composed of highly variable trains of 1–119 knocks call?1 (mean = 25 knocks call?1), a mean knock period of 33 knocks s?1, mean peak frequency of 400 Hz, and mean duration of 0.8 s. The occurrence of drum chorus calls at many locations within the NYSCS indicates likely spawning throughout the system, and suggests the possibility that individuals have invaded the Hudson River from native populations of Lake Champlain, Lake Erie, and Lake Ontario. We point out that the species has been excluded from the east coast of North America throughout history by geographic barriers, and it would have been impossible for the species to gain entrance to the Hudson without the NYSCS, or direct introduction, and thus it is a true invasive which will likely have a dramatic impact on the Hudson River ecosystem. We suggest that freshwater drum most likely also invaded Lakes Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga and Seneca through the NYSCS. We conclude that passive acoustic surveys are a highly effective non-invasive tool to monitor the distribution of soniferous invasive organisms in aquatic systems, and promise to be especially useful in documenting the future spread of freshwater drum in the Hudson River system.  相似文献

Despite many years of detailed examination focused on the Silurian strata of New York State, the position of the Wenlockian/Ludlovian boundary has, to date, not been satisfactorily cstablished. Reccnt discovery of early Ludlovian graptoloid graptolites, however, provides the first conclusive biostratigraphic evidence for placement of this chronostratigraphic boundary within the New York sections. The carly Ludlovian genera Saetograptus and Spinograptus were recovered from a thin, but laterally persistent bed of argillaceous dolostone located near the base of the Goat Island Formation. This occurrencc indicates that the Wenlockian/Ludlovian boundary is at or near the contact between the Goat Island Formation and the underlying Gasport Formation, considerably lower than had previously been suspected. □ Silurian, Wenlockian, Ludlovian, graptolites, stratigraphy. biostratigraphy.  相似文献
