Fourteen Indian populations ofD. melanogaster collected along a 22° latitudinal range were analyzed electrophoretically to compare the geographical patterns of allozymic variation at 13 loci. The data show higher genetic differentiation on the basis of moderate to higherF
ST values and significant statistical correlation of allelic frequencies at six polymorphic loci with latitude. The results add support to the hypothesis that the occurrence of parallel or complementary latitudinal clines across different continental populations provides evidence of natural selection maintaining such clinal variation. 相似文献

Summary Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) restriction site maps for nine species of theDrosophila obscura subgroup and forDrosophila melanogaster were established. Taking into account all restriction enzymes (12) and strains (45) analyzed, a total of 105 different sites were detected, which corresponds to a sample of 3.49% of the mtDNA genome. Based on nucleotide divergences, two phylogenetic trees were constructed assuming either constant or variable rates of evolution. Both methods led to the same relationships. Five differentiated clusters were found for theobscura subgroup species, one Nearctic, represented byDrosophila pseudoobscura, and four Palearctic, two grouping the related triads of speciesDrosophila subobscura, Drosophila madeirensis, Drosophila guanche, andDrosophila ambigua, Drosophila obscura, Drosophila subsilvestris, and two more represented by one species each,Drosophila bifasciata, andDrosophila tristis. The different Palearctic clusters are as distant between themselves as with the Nearctic one. For the related speciesD. subobscura, D. madeirensis, andD. guanche, the pairD. subobscura-D. madeirensis is the closest one. The relationships found by nucleotide divergence were confirmed by differences in mitochondrial genome size, with related species sharing similar genome lengths and differing from the distant ones. The total mtDNA size range for theobscura subgroup species was from 15.5 kb forD. pseudoobscura to 17.1 forD. tristis. 相似文献

Parallel latitudinal clines across species and continents provide dramatic evidence of the efficacy of natural selection, however little is known about the dynamics involved in cline formation. For example, several drosophilids and other ectotherms increase in body and wing size at higher latitudes. Here we compare evolution in an ancestral European and a recently introduced (North America) cline in wing size and shape in Drosophila subobscura. We show that clinal variation in wing size, spanning more than 15 degrees of latitude, has evolved in less than two decades. In females from Europe and North America, the clines are statistically indistinguishable however the cline for North American males is significantly shallower than that for European males. We document that while overall patterns of wing size are similar on two continents, the European cline is obtained largely through changing the proximal portion of the wing, whereas the North American cline is largely in the distal portion. We use data from sites collected in 1986/1988 (Pegueroles et al. 1995) and our 1997 collections to compare synchronic (divergence between contemporary populations that share a common ancestor) and allochronic (changes over time within a population) estimates of the rates of evolution. We find that, for these populations, allochronically estimated evolutionary rates within a single population are over 0.02 haldanes (2800 darwins), a value similar in magnitude to the synchronic estimates from the extremes of the cline. An analysis of the effects of inbreeding on the genetic structure of a colonizing population of Drosophila subobscura has been carried out. Species of Drosophila, particularly D. subobscura, may have lethal alleles associated with chromosomal inversions and our aim was to assess the extent to which the genome is balanced in this way. The frequencies of chromosomal inversions were compared between a large population and a set of 72 lines that were maintained by brother-sister mating for 10 generations. Fisher's matrix method was used to calculate the expected homozygosity in these inbred lines for 5 allozyme loci (Aph, Hk-1, Lap, Odh, and Pept-1) used as markers of large chromosomal segments. Furthermore, the expected rates of fixation corresponding to these allozyme loci were also calculated. The results show that the amount of homozygosis observed did not differ significantly from expectations (with the corresponding loss of lines as a consequence of the reduction in viability). However, two deviations from strict neutrality were observed: there was a heterozygote excess at the Lap locus, and the frequency of the O

We analyzed natural populations of Zaprionus indianusin 10 Indian localities along a south-north transect (latitude: 10–31°3 N). Size traits (body weight, wing length and thorax length) as well as a reproductive trait (ovariole number) followed a pattern of clinal variation, that is, trait value increased with latitude. Wing/thorax ratio, which is inversely related to wing loading, also had a positive, but non-significant correlation with latitude. By contrast, bristle numbers (sternopleural and abdominal) exhibited a non-significant but negative correlation with latitude. Sex dimorphism, estimated as the female/male ratio, was very low in Z. indianus, contrasting with results already published in other species. Genetic variations among populations were also analyzed according to other geographic parameters (altitude and longitude) and to climatic conditions from each locality. A significant effect of altitude was found for size traits. For abdominal bristles, a multiple regression technique evidenced a significant effect of both latitude and altitude, but in opposite directions. Genetic variations were also correlated to climate, and mainly with average year temperature. Taking seasonal variations into account failed however to improve the predictability of morphometrical variations. The geographic differentiation of Z.indianusfor quantitative traits suggests adaptive response to local conditions, especially to temperature, but also reveals a complex situation according to traits investigated and to environmental parameters, which does not match results on other drosophilid species. 相似文献

Summary A mutant strain of drosophila (D. subobscura) has two types of mitochondrial genomes: a small population (20%) identical to that of the wild strain (15.9 kb) and a predominant
population (80%) which has undergone a 5-kb deletion affecting more than 30% of the coding zone. Two cell lines were established
from homogenates of embryos from mutant and wild strains. The activities of the respiratory complexes measured in the different
cell lines are much lower than in the flies, indicating a glycolytic metabolism. Various modifications of the medium composition
did not change this metabolic pathway. The mutant cell line has two types of populations of mitochondrial genomes and the
heteroplasmy is equivalent to that measured in the mutant strain. However, the biochemical characteristics differ from those
observed in the flies (i.e., the decrease of complex I and III activities), and the various systems of compensation for the
consequences of the deletion that are showed in the mutant strain are no longer observed. Furthermore, in contrast with observations
made on mutant flies, the heteroplasmy appears unstable in the mutant cell lines: after 60 or so generations, it progressively
decreases until it disappears completely. The limited importance of mitochondrial energy metabolism in cells may explain the
low impact of the mutation on the established cell line, in contrast to what is seen in the mutant strain. 相似文献

Numerous ant taxa naturally inhabit stems of live and dead Guadua bamboo (Bambusoidea, Poaceae) in western Amazonia. In an experiment at the onset of the wet season in Peru’s Manu National Park, we augmented potential nest sites in stems of live bamboo, dead bamboo and dead ca?a brava (Gynerium sagittatum, another woody grass) at five stations within each of ten bamboo patches and ten control areas outside those patches. Each experimental stem possessed three vacant and available internodes, pre-drilled with, respectively, large, small and linear holes, mimicking the range of forms of surveyed natural entrances. After 24 days, approximately 13% of 798 available internodes had been colonized, the majority by fragments of existing colonies. Ignoring entrance type, which did not affect colonization for any species or species group, and censoring non-independent internodes of the same stem, we used individual stems as independent sample units in other tests. One specialist in live bamboo (Camponotus longipilis), and a likely specialist in dead bamboo (Camponotus depressus), were identified based on overrepresentation in bamboo habitat and disproportionate occurrence in live or dead bamboo stems. A third species, Camponotus (Pseudocolobopsis sp.) was more abundant in bamboo areas but colonized both dead bamboo and dead ca?a. Relatively high abundance of standing dead stems in Guadua forests may account for the presence of a dead stem specialist. The experiment missed detecting specialization in one live culm specialist (Camponotus mirabilis), likely due to its failure to simulate conditions required for the species’ unique modes of colony establishment and spread into new culms. Most opportunistic stem nesters colonized dead bamboo at significantly greater rates than dead ca?a, but were either equally well represented in bamboo and control areas, or underrepresented in bamboo habitat. Given low colonization rates overall, underrepresentation in bamboo cannot be attributed to competition from bamboo specialists for nesting space. Rather, it may be due to combined effects of seasonal flooding of bamboo habitat, and greater importance of food limitation, relative to nest site limitation, in that habitat. Summary Interspecific segregating populations derived from a cross between tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) cv M82-1 -8 (M82) and the wild species L. pennellii accession LA-716 (Lpen716) were used to study the genetic basis of salt tolerance and its implications for breeding. BC1 (M82 x (M82 x Lpen716)) and BC1 S1 (progenies of selfed BC1 plants) populations were grown under arid field conditions and irrigated with water having electrical conductivities of 1.5 (control), 10 and 20 dSm-1. The evaluation of salt tolerance was based on total fruit yield (TY), total dry matter (TD) and TD under salinity relative to the control (RD). Sodium, potassium and chloride concentrations were measured in the leaves and stems. The methods for estimating heritability were adapted to BC1 plants and BC1S1 families. TY, TD and RD had heritability estimates of 0.3–0.45, indicating that salt tolerance can be improved by selection. Genetic correlations between traits indicated that high yield may be combined with salt tolerance and that ion contents are not likely to provide an efficient selection criteria for salt tolerance. Genetic correlations between performances under various salinity levels suggested that similar mechanisms affect the responses to salinity treatments of 10 and 20 dSm-1. Responses to paper selection confirmed that salt tolerance of the tomato may be improved by selection, and that this selection should be based on dry matter and yield parameters under salinity.Passed away May 1986 相似文献

Summary The present investigation analyzes intercellular junctions in tissues with different developmental capacities. The distribution of junctions was studied inDrosophila embryos, in imaginal disks, and in cultures of disk cells that were no longer able to differentiate any specific pattern of the adult epidermis.The first junctions —primitive desmosomes andclose membrane appositions — already appear in blastoderm.Gap junctions are first detected in early gastrulae and later become more and more frequent.Zonulae adhaerentes are formed around 6 h after fertilization, whileseptate junctions appear in the ectoderm of 10-h-old embryos.Inwing disks of all stages studied (22–120 h), three types of junctions are found: zonulae adhaereentes, gap junctions, and septate junctions. Gap junctions, which are rare and small at 22 h, increase in number and size during larval development. The other types of junctions are found between all cells of a wing disk throughout development.All types of junctions that are found in normal wing disks are also present in theimaginal disk tissues cultured in vivo for some 15 years and in thevesicles of imaginal disk cells grown in embryonic primary cultures in vitro. Summary The glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GPDH, E. C. 1.1.1.8) gene ofDrosophila melanogaster contains a tandem duplication of a 4.5-kb-long DNA fragment. Survey of theGpdh gene region by the Southern blot analysis revealed the following features of this gene duplication: (1) The duplication was not observed in chromosome lines that carryIn(2L)t, a cosmopolitan chromosomal inversion in this species. The duplication and the inversion are in linkage disequilibrium. (2) The duplication is polymorphic in the Japan and US natural populations examined. Its frequency is 0.26 on an average inIn(2L)t-free chromosomes. (3) Triplication is absent or has not become frequent in the populations surveyed. Size-related phenotypic variation among second-chromosome karyotypes inDrosophila buzzatii was examined in an Argentinian natural population. For all measured traits (thorax and wing length; wing, head and face width), this inversion polymorphism exhibited a significant and (additive) linear contribution to the phenotypic variance in newly emerged wild flies. The results suggest that only overall body size, and not body shape, is affected. as no karyotypic variation was found for any trait when the effects of differences in within-karyotype size were removed with Burnaby's method. Likewise, in an experiment of longevity selection in the wild, variation in chromosomal frequencies was verified in the direction predicted on the basis of: (i) previous studies on longevity selection for body size in the wild and (ii) the pattern of chromosomal effects we observed on size. The direction of such selection is consistent with a pattern of antagonistic selection detected in previous studies on the inversion polymorphism. 相似文献

Both yield and quality traits for stover portion were important for forage and biofuel production utility in maize. A high-oil maize inbred GY220 was crossed with two normal-oil dent maize inbred lines 8984 and 8622 to generate two connected F2:3 populations with 284 and 265 F2:3 families. Seven yield and quality traits were evaluated under two environments. The variance components of genotype (σg2), environment (σe2) and genotype × environment interactions (σge2) were all significant for most traits in both populations. Different levels of correlations were observed for all traits. QTL mapping was conducted using composite interval mapping (CIM) for data under each environment and in combined analysis in both populations. Totally, 45 and 42 QTL were detected in the two populations. Only five common QTL across the two populations, and one and three common QTL across the two environments in the two populations were detected, reflecting substantial influence of genetic backgrounds and environments on the results of QTL detection for stover traits. Combined analysis across two environments failed to detect most QTL mapped using individual environmental data in both populations. Few of the detected QTL displayed digenic epistatic interactions. Common QTL among all traits were consistent with their correlations. Some QTL herein have been detected in previous researches, and linked with candidate genes for enzymes postulated to have direct and indirect roles in cell wall components biosynthesis. 相似文献

Summary Nucleotide sequences have been determined for the highly variable D2 region of the large rRNA molecule for over 60 strains of dinoflagellates. These strains were selected from a worldwide collection that represents all the known sibling species (compatibility groups, Mendelian species) in the sibling swarm referred to as Crypthecodinium cohnii. A phylogenetic tree has been constructed from an analysis of the variations in a length of about 180 bases, using PHYLOGEN string analysis programs. The Crypthecodinium tree is compared with the previously published but here augmented tree constructed upon the same rRNA region for the sibling species of a worldwide collection of ciliated protozoa related to the genus Tetrahymena. The first reported sequence of Lambornella clarki, the parasite of tree-hole mosquitoes, is included.The dinoflagellate species complex is much more homogeneous with respect to ribosomal variation. The mean number of differences among sequences from different Crypthecodinium species is about 7, in comparison with 22 differences among the ciliate species examined. Moreover, all the diversity in the dinoflagellates can be explained by base substitutions, whereas insertions and deletions are common in the ciliates. The dinoflagellates are also much more uniform with respect to nutritional and genetic economies.The two complexes differ also in the relationship between molecular variations and breeding compatibility. All tetrahymenine sibling species thus far examined are monomorphic in the D2 region, but several dinoflagellate species are polymorphic. Several different dinoflagellate species, moreover, have identical D2 regions. This kind of ribosomal identity of incompatible strains is found in these ciliates only in one tight cluster of species—Group C.The tetrahymenine swarm is apparently much older than the Crypthecodinium swarm, and the dinoflagellate species produce incompatible progeny species much more readily than do the ciliates, perhaps by the acquisition of mutations that potentiate incompatibility in sympatric populations.Offprint requests to: D. Summary Habitat selection whereby individuals within a population have different microhabitat preferences is possibly important for genetic diversity and stability. It has received a good deal of attention, especially forDrosophila populations. The literature is summarized and an attempt is made to reconcile what appear to be contradictory findings. Some generalizations are drawn: (1) individualDrosophila choose habitats in consistent and characteristic ways; (2) some microhabitat differences are more important to flies than others; (3) genetic factors influence habitat preferences; (4) experiential factors influence habitat preferences; (5) differences in processing ability moderate the influence of experience on habitat choice. It is argued that the traditional analysis of variance models are frequently not very helpful for visualizing the process, and a computational model is suggested instead. 相似文献

In the framework of phenotypic plasticity, tolerance to browsing can be operationally defined as a norm of reaction comparing
plant performance in undamaged and damaged conditions. Genetic variation in tolerance is then indicated by heterogeneity in
the slopes of norms of reaction from a population. We investigated field gentian (Gentianella campestris) tolerance to damage in the framework of phenotypic plasticity using a sample of maternal lines from natural populations
grown under common garden conditions and randomly split into either a control or an artificial clipping treatment. We found
a diversity of tolerance norms of reaction at both the population and family level: the impacts of clipping ranged from poor
tolerance (negative slope) to overcompensation (positive slope). We detected heterogeneity in tolerance norms of reaction
in four populations. Similarly, we found a variety of plastic architectural responses to clipping and genetic variation in
these responses in several populations. Overall, we found that the most tolerant populations were late flowering and also
exhibit the greatest plastic increases in node (meristem) production in response to damage. We studied damage-imposed natural
selection on plasticity in plant architecture in 10 of the sampled populations. In general, there was strong positive direct
selection on final number of nodes for both control and clipped plants. However, the total selection on nodes (direct + indirect
selection) within each treatment category depended heavily on the frequency of damage and cross-treatment genetic correlations
in node production. In some cases, strong correlated responses to selection across the damage treatment led to total selection
against nodes in the more rare environment. This could ultimately lead to the evolution of maladaptive phenotypes in one or
both of the treatment categories. These results suggest that tolerance and a variety of architectural responses to damage
may evolve by both direct and indirect responses to natural selection. While the present study demonstrates the potential
importance of cross-treatment genetic correlations in directing the evolution of tolerance traits, such as branch or node
production, we did not find any strong evidence of genetic trade-offs in candidate tolerance traits between undamaged and
damaged conditions.

Female fecundity, oviposition preference and specificity on one normal and two novel food media were assayed on four laboratory
populations ofDrosophila melanogaster, revealing considerable among- and within-population variation in oviposition preference. Overall, there was a significant
tendency of females to prefer novel media to their normal banana food as an oviposition substrate. Specificity in the populations
was fairly high, implying that a large proportion of females tended to lay the majority of their eggs on the preferred medium.
The results showed that oviposition preference for a given food medium could be affected by the alternative provided, and
that, consequently, oviposition preference for a given food medium versus another cannot be predicted based upon a knowledge
of what the preference for each of the two media was versus a common third medium. Specificity, on the other hand, was not
significantly affected by the type of alternative food media provided in a given trial. Moreover, comparison of results from
fecundity and oviposition preference assays also showed that the egg laying behaviour ofDrosophila females in response to different food media may be different in choice versus no-choice situations. Thus, a substrate on
which fecundity is higher than on another, when assayed in a no-choice situation, may not be preferred over the other substrate
when a choice between the two is provided to the ovipositing females. The latter two results point to possible complexity
in the responses of females to various oviposition substrates based upon the overall setting of the assay, including the alternative

Summary Gene duplications must play an important role in the evolutionary development of living organisms. Presented here is a general scheme that uses complementary alleles to isolate gene duplications in diploid organisms. The technique was used inDrosophila melanogaster to assess the rate of spontaneous gene duplication at two loci, maroon-like and rosy. The results indicate (1) that the rate of duplication of the maroon-like locus is on the order of 2.7×10–6; (2) that the rate of duplication of the rosy locus is approximately 1.7×10–4; and (3) that duplication occurs in males, suggesting that there may actually be two modes of gene duplication inDrosophila melanogaster. 相似文献

Strong north-south correlations with latitude were found for gene arrangements and for the Hbdh and 6Pgdh allozymes. Gametic associations between the A2 gene arrangement, the Hbdh

Summary Analysis of the development of the aldehyde oxidase (AO) pattern in the wing pouch ofD. melanogaster showed that the extension of areas with AO activity occurs in steps. This indicates that the activation of this enzyme is regulated in groups of cells. It is proposed to use the term territory for such a cell group. In the wing pouches ofD. melanogaster, D. simulans andMusca, corresponding parts of the disc become AO positive at comparable developmental stages. This indicates that AO becomes active in individual territories in a specific sequence.Borderlines of the distribution pattern of different enzymes in the wing pouch ofDrosophila and other dipteran species are in agreement with those found for the development of the AO pattern or are complementary to them. This indicates the existence of a common set of territories in the wing pouches of all higher diptera. Borderlines of patterns, as caused by different genetic constitution, are also in accord with this set of territories. The borderlines of some territories coincide with the compartmental A/P or D/V boundary. The results support the idea that both the location of compartmental boundaries and that of borderlines of enzyme territories are determined by a single mechanism.The distribution and the shape of the territories in the wing pouch is best explained by the reaction-diffusion model proposed by Meinhardt (1980), which involves three different gradients. 相似文献

Annual alpine species rely on selfing rather than on cross-pollination for successful reproduction. However, insect visits
may occasionally cause cross-pollination not only within but also between closely related species. The aim of this study was
to investigate four species of Euphrasia for their efficiency in spontaneous selfing and their success in intra- and interspecific crossing. We used the seed sets
that followed spontaneous selfing and artificial cross- and selfpollination to measure the breeding success. We compared the
morphological characters of species and hybrids and determined their ploidy level using flow cytometry. We verified the hybridogenous
origin of plants resulting from interspecific crosses using RAPD banding patterns. While spontaneous seed set was high in
the two small-flowered species, seed set in the large-flowered species was small and affected by external circumstances. We
obtained F1 and F2 hybrids from interspecific crosses of two diploid species and detected polyploid individuals in both generations. 相似文献
