Workers of three ant species (Lasius niger, Lasius flavus, Myrmica rubra) were caged in the laboratory together with caterpillars and pupae of five species of lycaenid butterflies. Mortality of ants was 3–5 times higher when the ants were confined with larvae lacking a dorsal nectar organ (Lycaena phlaeas, Lycaena tityrus) rather than with caterpillars which possess a nectar gland (Aricia agestis, Polyommatus bellargus, P. icarus). For all five species, ant survival was always lower at the pupal stage (where a nectar organ is always absent) than at the caterpillar stage and was largely equivalent for the butterfly species tested. The experimental data confirm earlier estimates that ants can derive nutritive benefits from tending facultatively myrmecophilous lycaenid caterpillars, even though these caterpillars produce nectarlike secretions at low rates.  相似文献

The seasonal variation in primary production, individual numbers, and biomass of phyto- and zooplankton was studied in the River Danube in 1981. The secondary production of two dominant zooplankton species (Bosmina longirostris and Acanthocyclops robustus) was also estimated. In the growing season (April–Sept.) individual numbers dry weights and chlorophyll a contents of phytoplankton ranged between 30–90 × 106 individuals, l–1, 3–12 mg l–1, and 50–170 µg l–1, respectively. Species of Thalassiosiraceae (Bacillariophyta) dominated in the phytoplankton with a subdominance of Chlorococcales in summer. Individual numbers and dry weights of crustacean zooplankton ranged between 1400–6500 individuals m–3, and 1.2–12 mg m–3, respectively. The daily mean gross primary production was 970 mg C m–3 d–1, and the net production was 660 mg C m–3 d–1. Acanthocyclops robustus populations produced 0.2 mg C m–3 d–1 as an average, and Bosmina longirostris populations 0.07 mg C m–3 d–1. The ecological efficiency between phytoplankton and crustacean zooplankton was 0.03%.  相似文献

The annual reproductive success of Coregonus albula and C. lavaretus in some polluted and clean areas of the central parts of L. Päijänne was estimated in 1981–90 on the basis of occurrence of larvae in shore seine and seine net samples after the ice melted. In polluted areas (0–5 km from Kaipola paper mill) larvae of coregonids were found only occasionally. In semipolluted areas (5–15 km from the paper mill) the densities of larvae were usually less than 0.1 ind m–2. In clean areas the mean densities of larvae ranged from 0.45 to 5.34 inds m–2. A relatively high reproductive success of vendace was observed in 1984–85, moderate success in 1982–83 and low success in 1986–90. The larvae of whitefish were scarce in both polluted and semipolluted areas and their density ranged from 0.01 to 0.15 ind m–2 in clean shores. The highest density was observed in 1989. In spite of the improvement of the quality of water in the area in the 1980s, the reproductive success of coregonids is still low in a great part of the basin which may depend on adverse oxygen conditions of the hypolimnion and sediment and the toxic effects of the effluents.  相似文献

Summary We assessed the feeding biology of veliger larvae of the introduced zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha Pallas) in laboratory experiments using inert microspheres as food analogues. Mean clearance rate on 2.87-m beads ranged between 247 and 420 L veliger–1 day–1. Clearance rate was unrelated to bead concentration up to 100 beads L–1, but was positively correlated with veliger shell length. Clearance rates of Dreissena veligers are within the range of those reported for marine bivalve veligers of similar size and for herbivorous Great Lakes microzooplankton, but are orders of magnitude lower than those of settled, conspecific adults. The impact of settled zebra mussel grazing activities on phytoplankton stocks may be up to 1162 times greater than that exerted by veliger populations in western Lake Erie. Based on 1990 size-frequency distributions and associated literature-derived clearance rates, reef-associated Dreissena populations in western Lake Erie (mean depth 7 m) possess a tremendous potential to filter the water column (up to 132 m3 m–2 day–1) and redirect energy from pelagic to benthic foodwebs. Preliminary analyses indicate that chlorophyll a concentration is strongly depleted (<1 g L–1) above Dreissena beds in western Lake Erie.  相似文献

Macrozoobenthos of the ultraoligotrophic Lake 95 (61°N, 46°W, 8 ha, zmax=18 m, ) is composed of about 14 taxa dominated by 12 Chironomidae species. Abundance, life cycle, biomass and production were estimated for the six dominant taxa. Abundance declined fromca. 4150 at 2.5 m depth toca. 1400 ind m–2 at 16 m depth and averagedca. 3200 ind m–2 on a lakewide basis. By numbers,Heterotrissocladius changi andH. oliveri dominated the average fauna.H. changi was common at the 2.5 m and 5 m depth stations, whereasH. oliveri dominated from 5 m depth downwards. Chironomids showed mainly a 1-yr life cycle, but apparently bothHeterotrissocladius species had two contemporary cohorts with emergence in midsummer and late autumn/early spring, respectively. Average annual ratio was 4.2 and 4.6 forH. oliveri andH. changi, respectively. Annual production varied from 0.3 g ash-free dry weight (AFDW) m–2 y–1 at 16 m depth to 1.6 g AFDW m–2 y–1 at 2.5 m depthH. changi contributed 45%, fiveMicropsectra spp. 17% andH. oliveri 15% to total average production, which on a lakewide basis wasca. 1.1 g AFDW or 25 kJ m–2 y–1. Lake 95 thus belongs at the very low end of measured lake zoobenthic productions, which range from 10 kJ m–2 y–1 in Arctic lakes toca. 1600 kJ m–2 y–1 in highly eutrophic shallow lakes.  相似文献

The under-ice habitat and fauna were studied during a typical winter situation at three stations in the western Barents Sea. Dense pack ice (7–10/10) prevailed and ice thickness ranged over <0.1–1.6 m covered by <0.1–0.6 m of snow. Air temperatures ranged between –1.8 and –27.5°C. The ice undersides were level, white and smooth. Temperature and salinity profiles in the under-ice water (0–5 m depth) were not stratified (T=–1.9 to –2.0°C and S=34.2–34.7). Concentrations of inorganic nutrients were high and concentrations of algal pigments were very low (0.02 g chlorophyll a l–1), indicating the state of biological winter. Contents of particulate organic carbon and nitrogen ranged over 84.2–241.3 and 5.3–16.4 g l–1, respectively, the C/N ratio over 11.2–15.5 pointing to the dominance of detritus in the under-ice water. Abundances of amphipods at the ice underside were lower than in other seasons: 0–1.8 ind. m–2 for Apherusa glacialis, 0–0.7 ind. m–2 for Onisimus spp., and 0–0.8 ind. m–2 for Gammarus wilkitzkii. A total of 22 metazoan taxa were found in the under-ice water, with copepods as the most diverse and numerous group. Total abundances ranged over 181–2,487 ind. m–3 (biomass: 70–2,439 g C m–3), showing lower values than in spring, summer and autumn. The dominant species was the calanoid copepod Pseudocalanus minutus (34–1,485 ind. m–3), contributing 19–65% to total abundances, followed by copepod nauplii (85–548 ind. m–3) and the cyclopoid copepod Oithona similis (44–262 ind. m–3). Ulva rigida was cultivated in 7501 tanks at different densities with direct and continuous inflow (at 2, 4, 8 and 12 volumes d–1) of the effluents from a commercial marine fishpond (40 metric tonnes, Tm, of Sparus aurata, water exchange rate of 16 m3 Tm–1) in order to assess the maximum and optimum dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) uptake rate and the annual stability of the Ulva tank biofiltering system. Maximum yields (40 g DW m–2 d–1) were obtained at a density of 2.5 g FW 1–1 and at a DIN inflow rate of 1.7 g DIN m–2 d–1. Larvae of the caddisTrichostegia minor (Curtis) were collected from four woodland pools in The Netherlands, three of which are temporary, from August 1986 till June 1987. Eggs and larvae of this species proved to be very well adapted to drought, freezing, strongly fluctuating pH and alkalinity levels and prolonged oxygen deficit. The life cycle ofT.minor in a small woodland marsh overgrown byCalla palustris took one year. Adult flight period started at the end of May. Oviposition took place independent of water. Hatching of the eggs started in September and was probably induced by immersion. During the larval stage from September until May, 5 instars could be distinguished by the size of the head capsule. Growth of instars I, II and III during autumn was moderate. Most larvae overwintered as instar III or IV. Possibly there was a larval diapause during winter. In spring rapid growth to instar V took place prior to pupation. Growth rate, expressed as the increase of mean individual dry weight was highest from March to April (2.05±0.75% DW.m–2.d–1). In extremely shallow water growth in spring was initially more rapid compared to growth in deeper water. During winter the growth rate decreased to 0.038±0.071% DW.m–2.d–1. Net annual production based on the changes of momentary biomass was 183.2±31.7 mg DW.m–2.y–1 or 177.2±31.3 mg AFDW.m–2.y–1. Production loss during the winter season was 75.1±10.8 mg DW.m–2.y–1 or 72.3±10.6 mg AFDW.m–2.y–1.  相似文献

Gas vesicle formation and buoyancy regulation in Pelodictyon phaeoclathratiforme strain BU1 (Green sulfur bacteria) was investigated under various laboratory conditions. Cells formed gas vesicles exclusively at light intensities below 5 mol · m-2 · s-1 in the stationary phase. No effect of incubation temperature or nutrient limitation was observed. Gas space of gas vesicles occupied always less than 1.2% of the total cell volume. A maximum cell turgor pressure of 330 kPa was determined which is comparable to values determined for cyanobacterial species. Since a pressure of at least 485 kPa was required to collapse the weakest gas vesicles in Pelodictyon phaeoclathratiforme, short-term regulation of cell density by the turgor pressure mechanism can be excluded.Instead, regulation of the cell density is accomplished by the cease of gas vacuole production and accumulation of carbohydrate at high light intensity. The carbohydrate content of exponentially growing cells increased with light intensity, reaching a maximum of 35% of dry cell mass above 10 mol · m-2 · s-1. Density of the cells increased concomitantly. At maximum density, protein and carbohydrate together accounted for 62% of the total cell ballast. Cells harvested in the stationary phase had a significantly lower carbohydrate content (8–12% of the dry cell mass) and cell density (1010–1014 kg · m-3 with gas vesicles collapsed) which in this case was independent of light intensity. Due to the presence of gas vesicles in these cultures, the density of cells reached a minimum value of 998.5 kg · m-3 at 0.5 mol · m-2 · s-1.The cell volume during the stationary phase was three times higher than during exponential growth, leading to considerable changes in the buoyancy of Pelodictyon phaeoclathratiforme. Summary The function of the caecal bulb, and its adaptation to chronic high- or low-Na+ intake, was investigated by in vivo perfusion of anaesthetised birds. Effects of acute aldosterone injection (125 g·kg–1 body mass) were also measured.Evidence was found for primary active net absorption of Na+, inducing parallel Na-linked absorption of water and Cl and secretion of K+. Around 20–35% of total Cl absorption and K+ secretion were independent of Na+ fluxes, and these components appear to be driven by passive processes with apparent conductances of 6.3×10–3 (G Cl) and 1.1×10–3 (G K) S·cm–2.Acetate (40mM) stimulated Na+ fluxes (8.5–9.9 Eq·cm–2·h–1) and Na-linked water fluxes (27–44 l·cm–2·h–1). Chironomus piger larvae are widespread in small rivers and canals strongly polluted with domestic sewage. Despite this, almost nothing is known concerning the biology of the species under natural conditions and its role in the process of river self-purification. For two years, benthic samples were collected in the Sestra River at a site about 250 m downstream of the effluent discharge drains of a sewage treatment installation where the greatest concentrations of the larvae occurred. The number and biomass ofC. piger larvae were subject to marked fluctuations,viz. 96,000–348,000 ind m–2 and 420–1,800 g m–2. 460 degreedays (on average) was required for development of one generation.C. piger has 5 or 6 generations per year depending on the hydrometeorological conditions during the growing season.C. piger larvae play an important role in self-purification of the river. They utilize precipitating seston for food and for building their dwelling tubes. According to our calculations the amount of organic matter assimilated in the area of maximum larval concentration ranged 80–177 g wet weight m–2 day–1, and 32–71 g wet weight m–2day–1 was mineralized.  相似文献

The ecology of Lake Nakuru (Kenya)   总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11  
Summary Consumer biomass and spatial distribution in the equatorial alkaline-saline Lake Nakuru were studied from 1972–1976. These data will provide the basis for estimating feeding and production rates and for quantifying energy flow at the consumer level. Two of the main consumers, the Lesser Flamingo (Phoeniconaias minor) and the Soda Tilapia (Sarotherodon alcalicus grahami), were covered by earlier papers. The biomass of the only planktonic crustacean, the copepod Lovenula (=Paradiaptomus) africana was very high (1.5 gDW (dry weight)·m-3, mean in 1972/73) in comparison with other tropical lakes. Lovenula was absent in 1974 and 1975, and at very low levels (0.1–0.4 gDW·m-3) in part of 1976. Among the rotifers Brachionus dimidiatus dominated in 1972/73 (0.2 gDW· m-3), but was outnumbered by B. plicatilis throughout most of 1974 to 1976 (mean total rotifer biomass 1.4 gDW· m-3, peak densities 7 gDW·m-3); during high salinity periods (>20) Hexarthra jenkinae occurred in very low numbers. For short periods rotifers can be the dominant species of L. Nakuru. Aquatic heteroptera (four species) played a minor role: they contributed 0.4% to total consumer biomass in 1972/73; in 1974–1976 the lake had no aquatic heteroptera. Benthic biomass (0.4 gDW·m-2) was within the range of other tropical lakes, it consisted almost exclusively of Leptochironomus deribae. Bird counts of the twelve most important species are given for the years 1972–1974: Pelecanus onocrotalus accounts for 90% of the biomass (0.44 gDW·m-3, mean 1972/73) with peak densities of almost 20,000 birds.-The consumer organisms covered by this and the two preceding papers represent >99% of L. Nakuru's consumer biomass. Population dynamics of various consumer species are discussed.  相似文献

Survival of adult female copepods and survival of eggs to 1-week-old larvae were assessed following exposure times of 0, 15, 30, 45, 60 and 90 min of UV-B radiation (450 W cm–2). An increase in both adult and larval mortality occurred between the 45 min (12,150 J m–2 unweighted) and 60 min (16200 J m–2 unweighted) treatment levels of radiation. The aquatic larvae of two simuliid species, Austrosimulium furiosum (Skuse) and Simulium ornatipes Skuse, which often occur together in Victorian streams, were shown in laboratory experiments to have preferences for different water velocities: larvae of A. furiosum preferred water velocities of 0.2–0.3 m s–1, and S. ornatipes preferred water velocities of 0.9–1.3 m s –1 . Final instar larvae of both species selected slow water speeds of less than 0.25 m s –1 prior to pupation. Flow patterns around a cylinder in a laboratory stream were mapped, and the distribution of A. furiosum larvae within the wake, paired vortices and horseshoe vortex was recorded. Larvae selected areas with suitable water velocities and aligned with the flow, providing flow visualization of micro-current speed and direction. The potential for micro-habitat partitioning is discussed in relation to benthic sampling strategies.  相似文献

In Ochroma pyramidale (Cav. ex Lam.) Urb., photon-saturated photosynthetic capacity (P Nmax) was 13 mol(CO2) m–2 s–1. Average stomatal conductance (g s) and water-use efficiency (WUE) were greater at high irradiance, about 260 mmol(H2O) m–2 s–1 and 2.15 g(C) kg–1(H2O), respectively. In the dark, g s values were about 30% of maximum g s. Leaf nutrient contents on a leaf area basis were 131, 15, 36, 21, and 12 mmol m–2 for N, P, K, Ca, and Mg, respectively. Ochroma also accumulated a greater amount of soluble saccharides than starch, 128 versus 90 g kg–1 (DM). The availability of N and Mg, but not P, Ca, or K, may limit photosynthetic rates of Ochroma in this site.  相似文献

Rhodospirillum rubrum was grown continuously and photoheterotrophically under light limitation using a cylindrical photobioreactor in which the steady state biomass concentration was varied between 0.4 to 4 kg m–3 at a constant radiant incident flux of 100 W m–2. Kinetic and stoichiometric models for the growth are proposed. The biomass productivities, acetate consumption rate and the CO2 production rate can be quantitatively predicted to a high level of accuracy by the proposed model calculations. The most common perception of unfavorable environmental factors causing the ice-ice disease in the farmed seaweeds, Kappaphycus and Eucheuma, was demonstrated in this study for the first time using stressful conditions of abiotic factors in a continuous culture system. Light intensity of less than 50 mol photon m–2 s–1 and salinity of 20% or less induced ice-ice whitening characterized by short segments at midbranches which were similar to those observed in the Philippine seaweed farms, while temperatures of up to 33–35 °C resulted in wide-scale whitening leading to complete damage of the branches. These effects were preceded by slow growth rates from an optimum of 3.7% d–1 to almost –2.0% d–1. Mechanical stress by wound injury did not result to ice-ice whitening similar to the above. Environmental factors observed to trigger ice-ice in the laboratory, although may not necessarily parallel those in the field, may act synergestically to produce similar effects.  相似文献

Moina mongolica, 1.0-1.4 mm long and 0.8 mm wide, is an Old World euryhaline species. This paper reviewed the recent advances on its autecology, reproductive biology, feeding ecology and perspective as live food for marine fish larviculture. Salinity tolerance of this species ranges from 0.4–1.4 to 65.2–75.4. Within 2–50 salinity, Moina mongolica can complete its life cycle through parthenogenesis. The optimum temperature is between 25 °C and 28 °C, while it tolerates high temperature between 34.4 °C and 36.0 °C and lower temperature between 3.2 °C and 5.4 °C. The non-toxic level of unionised ammonia (24 h LC50) for M. mongolica is <2.6 mg NH3–N l–1. Juvenile individuals filter 2.37 ml d–1 and feed 9.45×106 algal cells d–1, while mature individuals filter 9.45 ml d–1 and consume 4.94×106 algal cells d–1. At 28 °C, M. mongolica reaches sex maturity in 4 d and gives birth once a day afterward; females carry 7.3 eggs brood–1 and spawn 2.8 times during their lifetime. A variety of food can be used for M. mongolica culture including unicellular algae, yeast and manure, but the best feeding regime is the combination of Nannochloropsis oculata and horse manure. Moina mongolica reproduces parthenogenetically during most lifetime, but resting eggs can be induced at temperature (16 °C) combined with food density at 2000–5000 N. oculata ml–1. The tolerance to low dissolved oxygen (0.14–0.93 mg l–1) and high ammonia makes it suitable for mass production. Biochemical analyses showed that the content of eicospantanoic acid (20:53) in M. mongolica accounts for 12.7% of total fatty acids, which is higher than other live food such as Artemia nauplii and rotifers. This cladoceran has the characteristics of wide salinity adaptation, rapid reproduction and ease of mass culture. The review highlights its potential as live food for marine fish larvae.  相似文献

Fallisia biporcati n. sp. parasitises thrombocytes and lymphocytes of Anolis biporcatus and A. lionotus in Panama. Round or oval schizonts average 13.3 × 11.5 (10.5–16 × 9–13) m, with LW 153.8 (94–208) m2, and produce 38.3 (28–60) merozoites. Gametocytes are variably shaped, from round or oval to nearly triangular or rectangular, and average 12.6 × 9.0 (10–15 × 6–12) m, with LW 113.1 (82–150) m2 and L/W ratio 1.43 (1.0–2.2). Thrombocytes and lymphocytes of A. poecilopus in Panama are parasitised by F. poecilopi n. sp. Schizonts, oval to elongate in shape, 7.7 × 4.7 (5.5–9 × 3–6) m, with LW 36.5 (22–54) m2, are filled with 31.0 (20–51) tiny nuclei or merozoites. Gametocytes are 10.1 × 8.0 (7.5–14 × 6–11) m, with LW 82.0 (45–132) m2, round to elongate with L/W ratio 1.27 (1.0–1.6). F. thecadactyli n. sp. parasitises thrombocytes and lymphocytes of Thecadactylus rapicaudus in Panama and Venezuela. Oval, oblong, or triangular schizonts average 10.3 × 8.0 (7–13 × 5–12) m, with LW 86.6 (37–156) m2, and produce 40.2 (26–61) merozoites. Gametocytes are round, oval, triangular or elongate, 10.4 × 7.0 (7–15 × 5–11) m, with LW 74.8 (40–154) m2 and L/W ratio 1.51 (1.1–2.2). F. dominicensis n. sp. parasitises thrombocytes of A. cybotes on Hispaniola. Schizonts, 6.0 × 4.8 (4–8 × 3–7) m, with LW 29.1 (12–56) m2, round, oval, elongate, oblong or lentiform in shape, produce 12.4 (8–22) merozoites. Summary Abiotic factors, standing crop and photosynthetic production were studied in the equatorial alkaline-saline closed-basin Lake Nakuru (cond. 10,000–160,000 S). Meteorological conditions and abiotic factors offer suppositions for a high primary productivity: mean solar radiation is 450–550 kerg·cm-2·s-1, with little seasonal variation, regular winds circulate the lake every day and nutrient concentrations are usually high (>100 g P–PO4·l-1). Oxygen concentrations near sediments were <1 gO2·m-3 for at least 6 h·d-1 in 1972/73, resulting in a release of 45 mg P–PO4·m-2·d-1. Attenuation coefficients vary from 3.6–16.5 according to algal densities and mean depth from 0–400 cm. Algal biomass was 200 g·m-3 (d.w.) in 1972/73, due to a lasting Spirulina platensis bloom (98.5% of algal biomass). In 1974 algal biomass suddenly dropped to 50 g·m-3 (d.w.). Spirulina and several consumer organisms almost vanished, but coccoid cyanobacteria, Anabaenopsis and diatoms increased. Several causes for this change in ecosystem structure are discussed. The use of the light/dark bottle method to measure photosynthetic production in eutrophic alkaline lakes is discussed and relevant experiments were done. Oxygen tensions of 2–35 gO2·m-3 do not influence primary production rates. Net photosynthetic rates (mgO2·m-3·h-1; photosynthetic quotient=1.18) reached 12–17.7 in 1972/73 and 2–3 in 1974, but vertically integrated rates were only 1–1.4 in 1972/73 and 0.8 in 1974, and daily net photosynthetic rates (gO2·m-3·24 h-1) 3.5 in 1972/73 and 1 in 1974. 50% of areal rates were produced within the 10 most productive cm of the depth profile. The disproportion between high algal standing crops and relatively low production rates is due to self-shading of the algae, reducing the euphotic zone to 35 cm in 1972/73 and 77 cm in 1974. Efficiency of light utilization is 0.4–2%, varying with time of day and phytoplankton density. In situ efficiencies show an inverse relationship to light intensities. Photosynthetic rates of L. Nakuru remain within the range of other African lakes (0.1–3 gO2·m-2·h-1). The relation of O2 produced/Chl a of the euphotic zone is 50% lower then in tropical African freshwater lakes and conforms to lakes of temperate regions.  相似文献
