Comparison of transintegumental membrane permeability and partition coefficients of selected nonelectrolytes attempted to correlate the parameters of lipid solubility and membrane permeation in male and female Schistosoma mansoni. Transintegumental uptakes and octanol:water partition coefficients were determined for 10 nonelectrolytes (acetamide, antipyrine, benzyl alcohol, caffeine, ethanol, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, sucrose, thiourea, and urea). Linear regression analyses comparing the logarithm of the partition coefficient to the transintegumental uptakes yielded values of R = 0.80 (P < 0.001) for males, R = 0.84 (P < 0.001) for females, and R = 0.82 (P < 0.001) for a combined analysis of males and females. The male and female schistosomes showed no statistically significant differences in correlation of these parameters. The evidence, then, suggests that the multilaminate membrane functions in a way similar to the function of a lipid bilayer with regard to the parameters studied.  相似文献

A new method for measuring transintegumental uptake in living schistosomes in vitro has been applied to the study of individual males and females. Uptake of a 14-C labeled test metabolite was compared to that of tritiated water (a highly diffusible reference substance). Use of the short half-life (T 1/2 = 100 min) isotope 113m-Indium, bound to EDTA (ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid, a nondiffusible reference substance) permitted quantification of the relative amount of 14-C test substance passively adhering to the schistosoma surface. Substraction of this amount provided an estimate of net uptake. D-glucose uptake, as measured by this method, increased with time, approaching equilibrium by two min; a positive correlation between temperature and glucose uptake was also observed. Nondialyzable components in rat, human, horse and fetal calf sera did not enhance glucose uptake. In both male and female schistosomes, minimal uptakes were seen for the nonmetabolizable sugar alcohol mannitol (MW = 182). L-glucose uptake was similarly low, but high uptakes were observed in both sexes for D-glucose. In addition to confirming the stereospecificity of hexose uptake, these studies suggested our technique provides a sensitive method for measurement of both high and low uptake compounds. The uptakes of D-glucose and the L-amino acids--arginine, ornithine, lysine, histidine, phenylalanine and serine--were comparatively higher in female than male schistosomes. Slight elevations in uptake by females were observed for threonine, valine and glycine, but aspartate uptake was slightly higher in males. No dramatic male-female differences were immediately apparent for the uptakes of proline, leucine, isoleucine, tyrosine and glutamate. Schistosomal uptake of L-amino acids that are essential for vertebrates was generally higher than uptake of the nonessential amino acids.  相似文献

为了解干旱死亡叶片与自然凋落叶化学性质的差异性,对云南元江干热河谷5种植物(鞍叶羊蹄甲、白皮乌口树、灰毛浆果楝、细基丸和九里香)干旱死亡叶片和自然凋落叶化学性质进行比较分析。结果表明,干旱死亡叶片和自然凋落叶在碳和养分化学特性上表现出较大变异,且不同树种间存在极显著差异(P<0.001)。与自然凋落叶相比,干旱死亡叶片具有较高的可溶性碳、C/N比和Mg含量,而木质素、半纤维素和N含量则较低。干旱死亡叶片与自然凋落叶间的碳(R2=0.56,P<0.01)、纤维素(R2=0.52,P<0.01)、半纤维素(R2=0.85,P<0.001)、单宁(R2=0.99,P<0.001)、木质素/N(R2=0.60,P<0.01)、C/N(R2=0.64,P<0.001)和氮含量(R2=0.85,P<0.001)呈显著正相关。因此,可根据自然凋落叶化学性质预测未来极端干旱条件下干旱死亡叶片的化学性质。  相似文献

马麝(Moschus sifanicus)分布于我国青藏高原及周边区域,雄麝可分泌麝香。因历史上的过度利用及生境丧失等原因,马麝已极度濒危。马麝驯养是保育野生马麝资源及可持续生产麝香的有效方式。我国于1990年在甘肃兴隆山保护区开始马麝驯养,并于1996年实现了可持续的活体取香。分析了兴隆山麝场1996—2006年间的麝香生产及与泌香雄麝种群增长和种群结构的关系,结果表明:兴隆山麝场11a间共取香430头次,麝香总产量达3846.6 g,年均麝香产量为(349.69±84.69)g(n=11)。泌香雄麝的种群数与麝香年产量存在极显著的相关(R=0.638,P0.01),增长模型y=e(6.4285-3.6578/t)(R2=0.735,df=9,F=24.94,P=0.0010.01)和y=e(4.2049-3.4523/t)(R2=0.700,df=9,F=21.02,P=0.0010.01)可分别模拟该麝场的麝香年产量及泌香雄麝种群的增长。泌香雄麝的平均泌香量为(8.93±0.56)g/头(n=68),各年度的雄麝平均泌香量与麝香年产量相关极显著(R=0.442,P0.01),其增长模式呈指数式增长(y=7.5126e0.0244t)(R2=0.373,df=9,F=5.36,P=0.0460.05)。各年龄组雄麝间的平均泌香量差异显著(ANOVA,F7,59=2.522,P=0.0240.05),1.5岁马麝的泌香(2.00±1.82)g,(n=10)显著高于其他各年龄组马麝(P0.05),其余年龄组间的平均泌香量无显著差异(P0.05)。雄麝的年龄组与麝香年产量呈极显著的负相关(R=-0.936,P=0.0010.01),1.5—6.5岁雄麝占种群比例91.16%,生产麝香(3560.1g)占总产量的92.55%。以麝香生产为主的麝场,其驯养雄麝种群配置应以6.5岁龄以下雄麝为主。  相似文献

Social condition is an important factor in determining the behavioral and hormonal responses to a social stressor in the Siberian dwarf hamster (Phodopus sungorus). We predict that males housed with a female or a family (female and pups) will show an increase in the magnitude of the behavioral and hormonal responses to a male intruder compared to those of individually housed males. Three treatment groups were studied: individually housed males that had been previously group-housed in same-sex colonies (males,n= 10), males housed with a female (male + female,n= 9), and males housed with their female and pups (male + family,n= 12). Males were monitored for aggressive behavior toward an intruder male for 10 min. Blood samples were taken at baseline and after the encounter. Male + female and male + family groups spent more time in aggressive behavior (P< 0.05), such as attacking (P< 0.05) and fighting (P<0.05), than did individually housed males. These same groups showed significant increases in plasma cortisol after the encounter (P< 0.01) whereas there were no significant increases in plasma cortisol in solitary males. All groups showed significantly lower levels of plasma testosterone (male,P< 0.001, male + female,P< 0.05; male + family,P< 0.01) whereas a significant increase in prolactin occurred only in the male + family group (P< 0.05). There was a significant positive correlation between postencounter cortisol levels and total number of minutes spent in aggressive behavior (P< 0.05). These results demonstrate that the introduction of a novel intruder male results in an activation of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenocortical axis and a suppression of the reproductive axis. Furthermore, pairing of a male with a female alters the behavioral and hormonal responses to an intruder male.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Investigators generally pool observations of males and females in studies of the foraging behavior of sexually monochromatic songbirds. However, such pooling can obscure possible intersexual differences. We compared the foraging behavior of male and female Western Wood‐Pewees (Contopus sordidulus), a sexually monochromatic species, in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California during the breeding seasons of 2007 and 2008. We recorded 143 foraging observations (male N= 74, female N= 69). Overall, mean foraging rates of females (2.8 attacks/min) were higher (P < 0.001) than those of males (1.1 attacks/min). In addition, female foraging rates were significantly higher during incubation than during the nest building, nestling, and fledgling periods. When foraging, males perched higher above ground than females (means = 17.1 and 6.7 m, respectively). Differences between male and female Western Wood‐Pewees in foraging rates and perch heights suggest that males may spend more time on vigilance while females focus on foraging quickly during incubation and when feeding nestlings. Because metrics such as foraging attack rates are sometimes used as indicators of habitat quality and we found that rates can differ between the sexes and among nesting stages, investigators should consider the possibility of such differences when assessing habitat quality, especially for sexually monochromatic species of birds.  相似文献

Abstract Sublethal viral infections can cause changes in the body size and demography of insect vectors, with important consequences for population dynamics and the probability that individual mosquitoes will transmit disease. This study examined the effects of covert (sublethal) infection by Invertebrate iridescent virus 6 (IIV‐6) on the demography of female Aedes aegypti and the relationship between key life history parameters in covertly infected female insects compared with healthy (control) insects or non‐infected mosquitoes that had survived exposure to virus inoculum without becoming infected. Of the female mosquitoes that emerged following exposure to virus inoculum and were offered blood meals, 29% (43/150) proved positive for covert IIV‐6 infection. The net reproductive rate (R0) of covertly infected females was 50% lower for infected females compared to control mosquitoes, whereas non‐infected exposed females had an R0 approximately 15% lower than that of controls. Reproduction caused a significant decrease of about 13 days in mosquito longevity compared to females that did not reproduce (P < 0.001). Infected females lived 5–8 days less than non‐infected exposed females or controls, respectively (P = 0.028). Infected females and non‐infected exposed females both had significantly shorter wings than control insects (P < 0.001). There was a significant positive correlation between wing length and longevity in covertly infected female mosquitoes but not in control or non‐infected exposed mosquitoes. Longer lived females produced more eggs in all treatments. There were no significant correlations between body size and fecundity or the production of offspring. There was also no correlation between fecundity and fertility, suggesting that sperm inactivation was a more likely cause of decreased fertility in older mosquitoes than sperm depletion. We conclude that covert infection by iridescent virus is likely to reduce the vectorial capacity of this mosquito.  相似文献

The functional grouping concept, which suggests that complexity in ecosystem function can be simplified by grouping species with similar responses, was tested in the Florida scrub habitat. Functional groups were identified based on how species regulate exchange of carbon and water with the atmosphere as indicated by both instantaneous gas exchange measurements and integrated measures of function (%N, δ13C, δ15N, C:N ratio) in fire-maintained Florida scrub, which was considered the natural state for scrub habitat. Using cluster analysis, five distinct physiologically based functional groups were identified in the fire-maintained scrub and were determined to be distinct clusters and not just arbitrary divisions in a continuous distribution by the non-parametric multivariate analysis of similarities (ANOSIM; R=0.649, P=0.005). These functional groups were tested for robustness spatially, temporally, and with management regime using ANOSIM. The physiological functional groups remained distinct clusters in this broader array of sites (R=0.794, P=0.001) and were not altered by plot differences, primarily, water table depth (R=−0.115, P=0.893) or by the three different management regimes: prescribed burn, mechanically treated and burned, and fire-suppressed (R=0.018, P=0.349). The physiological groupings also remained robust between the two climatically different years, with 1999 being a much wetter year than 2000 (R=−0.027, P=0.725). Easy-to-measure morphological characteristics, if they indicate the same functional groups, would be more practical for scaling and modeling ecosystem processes than detailed gas exchange measurements; therefore, we tested a variety of morphological characteristics as functional indicators. A combination of non-parametric multivariate techniques were used to compare the ability of life form, leaf thickness (LT), and specific leaf area (SLA) classifications to identify the physiologically based functional groups. Life form classifications (ANOSIM; R=0.629, P=0.001) were able to depict the physiological groupings more adequately than either SLA (ANOSIM; R=0.426, P=0.001) or LT (ANOSIM; R=0.344, P=0.001). The ability of life forms to depict the physiological groupings was improved by separating the parasitic Ximenia americana from the shrub category (ANOSIM; R=0.794, P=0.001). Therefore, a life form classification including parasites was determined to be a good indicator of the physiological processes of scrub species and would be a useful method of grouping species for scaling physiological processes to the ecosystem level.  相似文献

Constitutive skin pigmentation and skin responses to ultraviolet radiation were measured on a sample of volunteers (n=250) living in State College, PA, USA. The sample was composed of individuals of European American (n=190), Hispanic (n=45), and East Asian ancestry (n=15). Constitutive pigmentation was measured using the Adjusted Melanin Index (AMI), Erythemal Dose Response (EDR) was measured using the slope of a* at 24 h (Δa*), and Melanogenic Dose–Response (MDR) was measured using ΔAM, the slope of AMI at 7 d. The relationships between constitutive skin pigmentation, EDR, MDR, sex, age, and ancestry were investigated. European Americans showed a lower constitutive pigmentation, had a significantly higher burn response (EDR), and had a significantly lower tanning response (MDR) than Hispanics and East Asians. No significant difference is seen between Hispanics and East Asians for either constitutive pigmentation or EDR. Constitutive pigmentation in females was slightly lower than in males in all three samples, but the difference was not significant. While no differences were observed in MDR between sexes, males had a stronger EDR than females regardless of population or constitutive pigmentation level, and this difference was significant in European Americans and Hispanics. We observed no age‐related differences in any of the populations or measures investigated. We evaluated the relationship between constitutive pigmentation, EDR and MDR. There was a strong inverse correlation between constitutive pigmentation and EDR in the three samples (European Americans, R2=0.176, P < 0.001; Hispanics, R2=0.204, P=0.009; East Asians, R2=0.223, P=0.098) and a strong direct correlation between constitutive pigmentation and MDR in European Americans and Hispanics (European Americans, R2=0.094, P < 0.001; Hispanics, R2=0.164, P=0.012). In other words, persons with lower constitutive pigmentation both burn more and tan less than persons with higher pigmentation. However, after controlling for constitutive pigmentation, EDR and MDR were significantly correlated in European Americans (R2=0.041 P=0.006). Thus, the general observation that persons who burn more tan less is probable because of the common link that these two phenotypes have with constitutive skin pigmentation and, in fact, once pigmentation has been adjusted for, there is a positive correlation between tanning response and burning response in European Americans.  相似文献

During roosting in summer, reproductive female bats appear to use torpor less frequently and at higher body temperatures (T b) than male bats, ostensibly to maximise offspring growth. To test whether field observations result from differences in thermal physiology or behavioural thermoregulation during roosting, we measured the thermoregulatory response and energetics of captive pregnant and lactating female and male long-eared bats (Nyctophilus geoffroyi 8.9 g and N. gouldi 11.5 g) during overnight exposure to a constant ambient temperature (T a) of 15°C. Bats were captured 1–1.5 h after sunset and measurements began at 21:22±0:36 h. All N. geoffroyi entered torpor commencing at 23:47±01:01 h. For N. gouldi, 10/10 males, 9/10 pregnant females and 7/8 lactating females entered torpor commencing at 01:10±01:40 h. The minimum T b of torpid bats was 15.6±1.1°C and torpid metabolic rate (TMR) was reduced to 0.05±0.02 ml O2 g−1 h−1. Sex or reproductive condition of either species did not affect the timing of entry into torpor (F=1.5, df=2, 19, P=0.24), minimum TMR (F=0.21, df=4, 40, P=0.93) or minimum T b (F=0.76, df=5, 41, P=0.58). Moreover, sex or reproductive condition did not affect the allometric relationship between minimum resting metabolic rate and body mass (F=1.1, df=4, 37, P=0.37). Our study shows that under identical thermal conditions, thermal physiology of pregnant and lactating female and male bats are indistinguishable. This suggests that the observed reluctance by reproductive females to enter torpor in the field is predominantly because of ecological rather than physiological differences, which reflect the fact that females roost gregariously whereas male bats typically roost solitarily.  相似文献

This study describes the reproductive biology of the Chinese minnow Hemiculterella sauvagei. The length‐weight relationship, sex ratio, spawning season, size at first maturity, and fecundity were analyzed based on 685 specimens collected from the Chishui River between July 2011 and July 2012. The relationship between standard length (SL) and body weight (BW) were estimated as BW = 2.14 × 10?4 × SL2.801 (R2 = 0.839; N = 413; P < 0.05) for females and BW = 1.31 × 10?4 × SL3.001 (R= 0.868; N = 272; P < 0.05) for males. The female to male sex ratio, 1.52 : 1, differed significantly from a 1 : 1 ratio. Females predominated in standard lengths >12 cm. Analyses of the monthly variation in the gonadosomatic index (GSI), the monthly proportions of macroscopic gonadal maturity, and the size distribution of oocytes consistently suggested a prolonged spawning season of H. sauvagei from March to August, with a peak from April to May. Logistic curves describing the relationship between proportion of maturity (Pr) at each length interval and standard length were estimated as Pr = 1/(1 + e26.867–0.306SL) (R= 0.999; N = 413; P < 0.05) for females and Pr = 1/(1 + e10.522–0.142SL) (R= 0.999; N = 272; P < 0.05) for males. Size at first maturity was estimated as 7.4 cm for males and 8.8 cm SL for females. Absolute fecundity varied from 563 to 5052, with a mean of 2413 ± 874 oocytes per ovary. The relative fecundity was estimated to be 41–299, with a mean of 171 ± 55 oocytes per ovary. The present study provides useful information for fishery management and resources conservation.  相似文献

A solution culture experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of silicate on the yield and arsenate uptake by rice. Rice seedlings (Oryza sativaL. cv. Weiyou 77) were cultured in modified Hoagland nutrient solution containing three arsenate levels (0, 0.5 and 1.0 mg L –1 As) and four silicate levels (0, 14, 28 and 56 mg L –1 Si). Addition of Si significantly increased shoot dry weight (P=0.001) but had little effect on root dry weight (P=0.43). Addition of As had no significant effect on shoot dry weight (P=0.43) but significantly increased root dry weight (P=0.01). Silicon concentrations in shoots and roots increased proportionally to increasing amounts of externally supplied Si (P < 0.001). The presence of As in the nutrient solution had little effect on shoot Si concentration (P=0.16) but significantly decreased root Si concentration (P=0.005). Increasing external Si concentration significantly decreased shoot and root As concentrations and total As uptake by rice seedlings (P <0.001). In addition, Si significantly decreased shoot P concentration and shoot P uptake (P <0.001). The data clearly demonstrate a beneficial effect of Si on the growth of rice seedlings. Addition of Si to the growth medium also inhibited the uptake of arsenate and phosphate by the rice seedlings.  相似文献

Sexual differentiation of the brain occurs between d 30 and 70 in the fetal lamb. The objective of this experiment was to determine if maternal fatness affects fetal steroid production and expression of their receptors which may ultimately alter endocrine systems postnatally. Fetuses were collected from ewes fed at either 100% (Control; n = 5) or 150% (Fat; n = 6) of NRC recommendations from 60 d prior to breeding until collection at 75 d of gestation. Hypothalamic and amygdala neural tissues were collected from twin male/female fetuses. Serum concentrations of testosterone were greater (P < 0.001) in male fetuses compared to female fetuses. Further, male fetuses from Fat ewes had greater (P < 0.05) serum concentrations of testosterone than male fetuses from Control ewes, but differences in testicular steroidogenic enzyme mRNA were not detected (P = 0.18). Quantity of hypothalamic mRNA for estrogen receptor (ER) β tended (P = 0.1) to be influenced by a sex by treatment interaction. Messenger RNA for ER-β was greater in female fetuses than male fetuses from Control ewes (P = 0.05). Although amount of ER-β mRNA did not differ among male fetuses (P = 0.7), amounts tended to be less (P = 0.07) in female fetuses from Fat ewes compared to those from Control ewes, and did not differ (P ≥ 0.8) from male fetuses. Hypothalamic ER-α mRNA tended (P = 0.1) to be less in fetuses from Fat ewes compared to Control fetuses but was not influenced (P = 0.3) by fetal sex or their interaction. Amount of mRNA for hypothalamic progesterone receptor tended (P = 0.06) to be greater in male fetuses than female fetuses and tended to be less (P = 0.06) in fetuses from Fat ewes than in Control fetuses, but did not differ by any sex by treatment interaction (P = 0.6). Hypothalamic RNA for the androgen receptor did not differ by sex, dam nutritional treatment, or the interaction. Likewise, amygdala RNA for the estrogen or androgen receptor did not differ (P ≥ 0.3) by sex, treatment, or their interaction. Dam fatness appears to decrease the expression of progesterone receptor, ER-α, and decrease amount of ER-β in the female fetuses while increasing circulating concentrations of testosterone in male fetuses. Altered expression of hypothalamic receptor genes by the uterine environment may affect adult responses to stress, sexual behavior and/or the pattern of gonadotropin release in response to gonadal steroids.  相似文献

Four agents — acarbose (ACA), 17‐α‐estradiol (EST), nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA), and methylene blue (MB) — were evaluated for lifespan effects in genetically heterogeneous mice tested at three sites. Acarbose increased male median lifespan by 22% (P < 0.0001), but increased female median lifespan by only 5% (P = 0.01). This sexual dimorphism in ACA lifespan effect could not be explained by differences in effects on weight. Maximum lifespan (90th percentile) increased 11% (P < 0.001) in males and 9% (P = 0.001) in females. EST increased male median lifespan by 12% (P = 0.002), but did not lead to a significant effect on maximum lifespan. The benefits of EST were much stronger at one test site than at the other two and were not explained by effects on body weight. EST did not alter female lifespan. NDGA increased male median lifespan by 8–10% at three different doses, with P‐values ranging from 0.04 to 0.005. Females did not show a lifespan benefit from NDGA, even at a dose that produced blood levels similar to those in males, which did show a strong lifespan benefit. MB did not alter median lifespan of males or females, but did produce a small, statistically significant (6%, P = 0.004) increase in female maximum lifespan. These results provide new pharmacological models for exploring processes that regulate the timing of aging and late‐life diseases, and in particular for testing hypotheses about sexual dimorphism in aging and health.  相似文献

Background Intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) was involved in the pathogenetic mechanisms responsible for ischemic stroke (IS). Population-based sample have revealed gene-gender interaction in blood pressure which is major risk for IS. We sought to evaluate whether ICAM-1 K469E polymorphism was involved in the causation of IS and whether it was different between female and male. Methods A 1:1 case-control study was conducted. The K469E polymorphism of ICAM-1 gene were analyzed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and restriction enzyme analysis in Chinese patients with IS (n = 309) and elderly subjects without IS (n = 309). Results ICAM-1 K469E polymorphism was significantly associated with IS. Interestingly, a further analysis stratified by sex found that there was significance between 469E genotypes and IS in female, but not in male. Multiple regression analysis revealed that ICAM-1 K469E polymorphism was still significantly associated with IS, compared with ICAM-1 KK genotype in all population (OR = 1.60, P = 0.030). Stratified by sex, EE combined EK was contributory factor to IS in female (OR = 3.03, P = 0.004), but not in male. After adjustment for confounding factors, the interaction between female and ICAM-1 EK/EE genotypes was found (OR = 3.54, P = 0.001). Conclusions It is suggested that the ICAM-1 469E allele may be important in the pathogenesis of ischemic stroke, especially in female but not in male. In the present study we analysed the possible effect of age, sex and smoking on the mean values of micronucleus (MN) and sister chromatid exchange (SCE) frequencies on peripheral blood obtained from 38 subjects ranging in age from 16 to 63 years and 16 centenarians. The mean number of binucleated cells with micronuclei varied in function of age and sex (as demonstrated by the analysis of covariance (F=13.13; P<0.001), particularly evident was the increment observed in women with increasing age (interaction age/sex: F=5.53; P<0.05). Smoking habits had no effects on MN frequency (F=0.36; P>0.05). Sex (F=4.18; P<0.05) and smoking habits (F=14.64; P<0.001) influenced significantly SCE per cell frequencies, but age had no effects on them (F=2.45; P>0.05).The age-associated increase of sex chromosome loss was studied using fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH) on interphase nuclei.The loss of Y signals was observed in 10% of interphase cells from the centenarians males, that is six times more often than in the younger control men (1.6%). The frequency of X signal loss (1.7%) in young women was similar to that observed in male controls of the same age but the incidence of the X chromosome aneuploidy in centenarian females was appreciably higher (22%) than that found for the Y chromosome in males. These results were correlated with the data on MN formation and a positive correlation between the percentage of aneuploid cells (FISH) and MN values was observed (r=0.50; P<0.05).  相似文献

干旱半干旱区植物的木质部输水系统对维持植物生长发育有重要作用。以中国干旱半干旱区的草本植物为研究对象,旨在探究草本物种根系导管解剖结构与植物生长之间的关系。用石蜡切片法,将在锡林浩特草原采集的草本物种的主根样品制作成切片,得到固定面积内导管解剖结构参量(导管数量、导管分数、平均导管面积、平均水力传导率和水力直径),然后用逐步回归法和Pearson相关分析各导管解剖性状与植物生长特征(年龄、生长速率和平均高度)之间的关系。结果发现(1)生长速率与导管数量(R=-0.494,P<0.01)和导管分数(R=-0.255,P<0.05)显著负相关,与平均导管面积(R=0.274,P<0.05)、平均水力传导率(R=0.263,P<0.05)和水力直径(R=0.245,P<0.05)显著正相关,表明生长快的草本具有大而少的导管,需要较高的水分传输能力,而生长慢的草本具有小而多的导管,水力安全性较高;(2)植株的高度与导管数量(R=-0.354,P<0.01)显著负相关,与平均导管面积(R=0.293,P<0.05)、平均水力传导率(R=0.289,P&l...  相似文献

Blue monkeys (Cercopithecus mitis stuhlmanni) are seasonal breeders with a dynamic mating system in which typical one‐male social units are regularly disrupted and replaced by multi‐male ones. The number of males in the group is correlated with the number of oestrous females. We used observations of male presence and female oestrus on individual days during a 6‐month period to assess whether the presence of multiple males in a group stimulates female oestrus or whether oestrous females attract multiple males to the group. We confirmed prior observations with our finding that the number of males in a group was significantly correlated (rs = 0.435, P < 0.0001) with the number of oestrous females across 126 observation days. A transition matrix did not show an obvious relationship between day‐to‐day changes in the numbers of oestrous females and males. However, cross‐correlation analysis provided stronger support for the idea that the number of oestrous females attracts males to a group than for the idea that the influx of strange males stimulates oestrus in female blue monkeys. Autocorrelation analysis showed that while female oestrus appeared to show a high degree of synchrony, as expected in a seasonal breeder, there was no evidence that the number of males accompanying a group of females influenced the likelihood of other males joining or leaving the group. Overall, our results confirm that female oestrous behaviour stimulates changes in male residence patterns. However, other observations suggest that changes in male residence may also stimulate female oestrus in some circumstances.  相似文献

The levels of benzo(a)pyrene diol-epoxide (BPDE)-DNA adducts and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) were analysed in a limited number of samples of autoptic lung tissue obtained from non-professionally exposed male (n= 13) and female (n= 12) non-smokers in an attempt to evaluate the relationship between gender, lung PAH levels (n= 25) and susceptibility to BPDE-DNA adduct formation (n= 18). Stimulation of liver cell multiplication was obtained under two different experimental conditions.
  • 1 A single injection of casein solution resulted in (a) an identical synchronized mitotic wave response in 10-day old male and female rats and (b) a significantly lower response in adult male rats compared to females, a difference which was reduced by castration of males at birth but essentially maintained if animals were operated when 10 days old.
  • 2 Partial hepatectomy shortly after puberty resulted in active hepatocyte multiplication occurring 3 hr earlier in females than in males. This difference was suppressed when females were ovariectomized at birth and significantly reduced when they were spayed at a later age. Hepatocytes of castrated females entered actively into S phase 2 hr later than the sham-operated controls. Unilateral ovariectomy on the other hand indicated that during compensatory and/or hyper-compensatory activity of the single ovary there was a maximum difference between the male and female rate of [3H]thymidine uptake in liver nuclei 20 hr after hepatectomy. A further kinetic study (t= 25, 30, 40, 65, 90 hr) indicated no significant sex-related difference in the number of S phases per 10,000 cells.
The DNA content of regenerating versus control livers was comparable in both sexes at t= 22 and 90 hr but higher in females at t= 40 and 65 hr. A possible early postnatal interference of certain hormonal mechanisms in the receptivity to mitotic stimuli is postulated and discussed.  相似文献
