I used radio telemetry to determine the effects of substrate size and composition on overnight retreat site selection by western fence lizards ( Sceloporus occidentalis). In watersheds of northern California (USA), these lizards occupy two habitat types differing in substrate characteristics: rocky cobble bars found in the dry, active channels of rivers and grassy upland meadows. Rocky substrates, found almost exclusively on cobble bars, provided warmer potential retreat sites than all available retreat sites on meadows during the first 5 h of inactivity. Only cobble and sand substrates provided retreats with temperatures within the preferred daily active range (32–36°C) during the inactive period for these lizards (1900–0900 hours). Females on a cobble bar used rocks as retreats on >90% of nights during the breeding season whereas females on a meadow used wood (>70% of nights) and burrows (>25% of nights). In contrast to females, cobble bar males used rocks significantly less frequently (<70%) and slept in the open air significantly more frequently (25% vs. <1%). Cobble bar females further, showed a significant preference for cobbles 15 cm thick, whereas the rocks used by males did not differ significantly in thickness from those measured in randomly placed transects. Rocks 15 cm thick were the warmest retreats commonly available on this habitat type. Thus, thermal microenvironments available to and chosen by gravid female lizards differ considerably between river and non-river habitats.  相似文献

Larval behaviour is important to dispersal and settlement, but is seldom quantified. Behavioural capabilities of larval Lutjanus carponotatus in both offshore pelagic and reef environments at Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef were observed in situ to determine if they were sufficient to influence dispersal. Offshore, larvae swam with higher directional precision and faster on the windward side of the island (28 cm.s−1) than on the leeward side (16 cm s−1). Most larvae swam directionally. Mean swimming directions were southerly in the windward area and northerly in the leeward area. Larvae avoided the surface and remained mostly between 3–15 m. Larvae released near reefs were 2–3 times faster swimming away from reefs (19 cm s−1) than swimming toward or over them (6–8 cm s−1). Speed swimming away was similar to that offshore. Of 41 larvae released near reefs, 73% reached the reef, 59% settled, and 13% of those reaching the reef were eaten. Larvae settled onto hard and soft coral (58%), topographic reef features (29%) and sand and rubble (13%). Settlement depth averaged 5.5 m (2–8 m). Before settling larvae spent up to 800 s over the reef (mean 231 s) and swam up to 53 m (mean 14 m). About half of the larvae interacted with reef residents including predatory attacks and aggressive approaches by residents and aggressive approaches by settling larvae. Settlement behaviour of L. carponotatus was more similar to a serranid than to pomacentrids. Settlement-stage larvae of L. carponotatus are behaviourally capable, and have a complex settlement behaviour.  相似文献

Larval Macrostemum carolina caddisflies construct silken catchnetswithin protective retreats, often on submerged trees and branches(i.e., snags). In the Savannah River, M. carolina larvae constructthree distinct retreats that differ in the configuration ofthe water entrance hole: (1) at the end of a silken tube, (2)flush with the top of the retreat, and (3) backed by a 180-degreesilken backstop. To identify the proximate mechanism mediatingthis retreat polymorphism, we removed larvae of known phenotypefrom their original retreats and brought them into the laboratory, allowing them to construct new retreats. We found that (1) larvaecan construct more than one type of retreat, so variation inthis behavior is not under strict genetic control; (2) larvaedo not preferentially reconstruct their original retreat design,so these alternative behaviors apparently exhibit little heritability;and (3) larvae primarily construct each phenotype in a particularmicrohabitat (i.e., "tube" and "backstop" retreats are principallyconstructed on the downstream half of the snag, and "flush"retreats on the upstream–bottom quadrant). Therefore, the retreat polymorphism in M. carolina is phenotypically plasticand is controlled by microhabitat location or a correlated environmentalvariable. Most net-spinning caddisflies construct their netsin fairly specific microhabitats. However, behavioral plasticityallows M. carolina larvae to construct retreats all around asnag, thereby reducing potentially intense competition for spacewith other net-spinning caddisflies. Consequently, this maybe the ultimate reason this polymorphism evolved.  相似文献

Bemisia tabaci biotype B is a key pest in pepper crops in Argentina. The parasitoid Eretmocerus mundus is frequently found parasitizing this whitefly in greenhouses without pesticide applications. The present studies were carried out with the objective of evaluating control obtained with different rate and number of parasitoid releases under experimental conditions. Release rate: cages with pepper pots were positioned in an experimental greenhouse and randomly assigned to the release rate treatments (0, 1 and 3 pairs of E. mundus/plant/week with a total of three introductions). Number of releases: similar cages were assigned to the number of parasitoid introduction treatments (0, 1, 2 and 3) with the best release rate obtained in the previous trial. In both assays whitefly (adults and nymphs) and parasitoid (parasitized nymphs) population sizes in each cage were monitored weekly for a period of 10 weeks. Results suggested that the introduction of 2 E. mundus/plant/week was enough to suppress host population compared to control treatment (peaks of 7.75 adults and 58.75 nymphs/cage and 643.75 adults and 1598 nymphs/cage, respectively) (p < 0.05), with 85% of parasitism. E. mundus had to be introduced three times to achieve the best pest control (peaks of 1.17 adults and 20.33 nymphs/cage vs. 55.67 adults and 75 nymphs/cage in control treatment) with 84% of parasitism (p < 0.05). These results were then validated in a pepper crop under experimental greenhouse conditions. Whitefly population was lower in those greenhouses where E. mundus was released compared to control greenhouses (0.15 adults and 0.71 nymphs/4 leaves and 0.73 adults and 1.64 nymphs/4 leaves, respectively), with a peak of 54% of parasitism (p < 0.05). We concluded that good suppression of B. tabaci could be achieved using E. mundus under spring conditions in Argentina.  相似文献

In our previous studies, we demonstrated that dominant hens had priority in using the dust bath, resulted in increased competition for the resource. It seemed that the problem was that the resource was placed on one side of the cage (‘localised’). Therefore, we designed a medium-sized furnished cage with a dust bath and nest box on both sides of the cage (‘separated’, MFS). To evaluate the effects of separation of these resources, we compared the behaviour of high-, medium- and low-ranked hens in MFS cage with that in small (SF) and medium furnished (MFL) cages with a localised resource. In total, 150 White Leghorn layers were used. At the age of 17 weeks, the hens were randomly divided into three groups and moved to small furnished cages (SF, 90 cm wide; five birds per cage) and two types of medium furnished cages (180 cm wide; 10 birds per cage) with a nest box and dust bath on both sides (MFS) and a nest box and dust bath on one side of the cage (MFL). The total dust bath and nest box areas per hen were same for the three cages. The dominance hierarchy was determined by observing the aggressive interactions and by this high-, medium- and low-ranked hens in each cage were identified. The behaviour, use of facilities and physical condition of these hens were measured. Data were analysed by using repeated measure ANOVA. A significant interaction between social order and cage design was found in the proportions of time spent in the dust bath and on performing dust-bathing (both P < 0.001), and these proportions tended to be higher in higher-ranked hens in SF and MFL. Conversely, the MFS low-ranked hens tended to use the dust bath more than the SF and MFL low-ranked hens. Thus, hens from each rank used the dust bath equally in MFS, though the MFS high-ranked hens tended to use the resource less than the SF and MFL high-ranked hens. While the frequency of pre-laying sitting was lower among low-ranked hens (P < 0.05), the proportion of time in the nest box was higher among low- than high-ranked hens (P < 0.01). The low-ranked hens spent more time performing escaping, moving and standing in the nest box. In conclusion, it is suggested that separation of the dust bath to two locations would be an effective arrangement to promote more equal usage of the dust bath by hens from each rank in the furnished cages. It was also confirmed in the present study that nest boxes were not only used for laying eggs but also as a refuge by lower ranked hens.  相似文献

The present work focuses on the study of the physical characteristics of olive stone wooden residues at the prospect of its use as a bulking material in compost process. The physical characteristics that were studied according to particle mesh classification, were the apparent density, porosity, water holding capacity, air free space and air pressure drop. From the experimental results, it was proved that only the fraction of 6.8–12.5 mesh, which is 29.40% of the substrate, could maintain the moisture in the optimum range 40–60%. The fraction of the particles of 2.6–23.6 mesh, which was 74.68% of the substrate, had appropriate porosity for composting. It was also proved that for dried substrate and air velocity 300 m h−1, acceptable pressure drop (10 cm H2O m−1) was observed for the fraction of the particles of 2.6–27.5 mesh, which was 80.08% of the substrate, while for dried substrate and air velocity 150 m h−1, the respective fraction was particles of 2.6–37.9 mesh which accounted for the 89.48% of the substrate. Conclusively, olive oil processing solid residues have the physical characteristics, so as to be used for composting or as a substrate for co-composting with high strength wastewater.  相似文献

Masking affects the ability of echolocating bats to detect a target in the presence of clutter targets. It can be reduced by spatially separating the targets. Spatial unmasking was measured in a two-alternative-forced-choice detection experiment with four Big Brown Bats detecting a wire at 1 m distance. Depth dependent spatial unmasking was investigated by the bats detecting a wire with a diameter of 1.2 mm in front of a masker with a threshold distance of 11 cm behind the wire. For angle dependent spatial unmasking the masker was turned laterally, starting from its threshold position at 11 cm. With increasing masker angles the bats could detect thinner wires with diameters decreasing from 1.2 mm (target strength −36.8 dB) at 0° to 0.2 mm (target strength −63.0 dB) at 22°. Without masker, the bats detected wire diameters of 0.16 mm (target strength −66.2 dB), reached with masker positions beyond 23° (complete masking release). Analysis of the sonar signals indicated strategies in the echolocation behavior. The bats enhanced the second harmonics of their signals. This may improve the spatial separation between wire and masker due to frequency-dependent directionality increase of sound emission and echo reception.  相似文献

Predation by a predator complex consisting of adults of the lygaeidGeocoris punctipes (Say), the nabidsNabis roseipennis Reuter and/orTropiconabis capsiformis Germar and the coccinelids,Hippodamia convergens Guerin-Meneville andColeomegilla maculata (DeGeer) onHeliothis virescens (F.) eggs, 1st-instar larvae or both on late pinhead square and early bloom stage cotton was evaluated in field cages in Mississippi. Prey densities of 4 (11, 512/ha) or 8 per cage and predator: prey (P:p) ratios of 1∶1, 2∶1, 3∶1, 4∶1 and 5∶1 were used. Prey were labeled with phosphorus-32 or carbon-14 to determine predator ingestion and effectiveness. Average percent egg predation as a function of P:p ratio ranged from 2.1 to 12.1 for a 48 h period. The average percent predation on larvae as a function of P:p ratio ranged from 5.3 to 22.0. The hemiptera fed more than the coleoptera on larvae, andG. punctipes was the best egg predator. For the range of predator densities used, the average area of discovery for the predator complex was 6.98 × 10−3 m/day and 2.34 × 10−2 m/day when exposed to eggs and larvae, respectively. We investigated the predation and depth effects on abundance and size distribution of an invasive freshwater bivalve, Limnoperna fortunei, post-larvae using screened (5-, 25-, and 50-mm mesh openings) and unscreened cages at three depths (6, 12, and 1 m above the bottom) in a dam reservoir, Lake Ohshio of Japan. The densities of L. fortunei on the unscreened cages were much lower than those of the 5-mm mesh screened cages at any depth. The predation rates estimated by dividing the density of the unscreened cage by that of the 5-mm mesh screened cage were 97.3% at 6 m depth, 96.6% at 12 m depth, and 95.8% at the bottom. Shell lengths of L. fortunei post-larvae were small on bottom cages, and their size distribution was significantly different from those at other depths. These results suggest that predation and depth affected the abundance and size distribution of L. fortunei in the lentic environment. The impact of L. fortunei invasion on the food web and the possibility of regulating their population by predation pressures are also discussed.  相似文献

The survival rate of Amblyomma variegatum engorged nymphs was studied in 9 cohorts released during the first part of the dry season (i.e. the nymph infestation period in the region) and placed on a natural savannah, either in plastic containers or in cages driven into the soil and open at the bottom. All nymphs put in the containers placed in the sun died rapidly, while a high moulting rate (94%) was observed in containers placed in the shade. This rate reached 63% for the ticks released in the cages. The moulting period lasted from less than 4 to more than 6 weeks, depending on the release period: unfed adults are therefore present in the pasture 4–5 months before the onset of the adult infestation period. The survival rate of the unfed adults did not vary according to the release period of the nymphs: at the beginning of the rainy season, 20–25% of the adult ticks were still alive in the cages. Very important variations in survival and disappearance rates were observed according to the place where the cages had been installed: within a few metres, the survival rate could vary from 0 to 90%, presumably because of the activity of predators which removed also dead tick from the plastic containers. Predators may then have a great but highly variable and unpredictable impact on the natural population of A. variegatum adults. Engorged nymphs released on pasture were able to find suitable micro-habitats allowing survival, covered up to 2.8 metres to reach them, and grouped together at the neck or root network of bushes and grass clumps, sometimes burrowing to a depth of 10 cm.  相似文献

The susceptibility of larvae of the leek moth, Acrolepiopsis assectella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Acrolepiidae) to different concentrations of an autochthonous strain of Steinernema feltiae (Rhabditida: Steinernematidae) was examined in laboratory experiments using Petri dishes. The efficacy of this strain in pots and field experiments was also evaluated. High mortality (80%–100%) of leek moth larvae was observed when these larvae were exposed to low concentrations (3 × 103 to 1 × 104 IJs/m2) of S. feltiae under laboratory conditions. Foliar application of 30,000 IJs/leek in pot experiments caused a 98% reduction in leek moth larvae. Field experiments showed a 87.7% reduction of leek moth larvae with the nematode treatment, significantly higher than the 22% reduction with the Bacillus thuringiensis treatment. The efficacy of the treatments with S. feltiae in relation to the microhabitat of the leek moth larvae between the interfolded leaves of the leek is discussed.  相似文献

The strategy of optimization using sequential factorial design was employed to enhance the tensio-active emulsifying agent produced by Candida lipolytica using soybean oil refinery residue as substrate. A full factorial design was used to evaluate the impact of three fermentation factors—amounts of refinery residue, glutamic acid and yeast extract. This allowed exclusion of the yeast extract. Full factorials designs were then sequentially used to optimize the levels of the residue and glutamic acid. The surface tension value was finally reduced to 25.29 mN/m. The maximum emulsifier activity using different substrates was within 40 h of cultivation. The surface tension of the cell-free broth containing the biosurfactant remained very stable during exposure to a wide range of pH (2–12), temperatures (0–120°C) and salinity (2–10% NaCl). The combination of an industrial waste and a cheap substrate therefore seems to be very promising for the low-cost production of potent biosurfactant.  相似文献

An eco-friendly photobleaching extraction process for agar extraction from the red alga Gracilaria lemaneiformis was developed for the benefit of workers’ health and environmental safety. Here we report the optimization of key process parameters (alkali modification concentration, photobleaching duration, algal length and screen filter opening size) in order to scale up this new technique. The optimal conditions were found to be modification by 3–5% NaOH, photobleaching for 5 h, using algal fragments 2 –4 cm in length, and a filter screen with a 6 μm opening. A 20-L agar extraction reactor was thus constructed, and the scale-up of the agar extraction process was tested in six batch experiments. The resulting agar quality was similar to that of the laboratory-scale extraction. In addition, batch-to-batch reproducibility was excellent. The results demonstrate the excellent scale-up ability and potential application of this new photobleaching agar extraction process on a commercial scale. The agar yield and gel strength for 5% NaOH modified agar were 26.8% and 1,897 g cm−2, while those for 3% NaOH modified agar were 28.2% and 1,287 g cm−2, respectively. It is clear that the agar yield and quality can be manipulated via alkali modification in this new eco-friendly extraction to meet market demands.  相似文献

The tortoise tick Hyalomma aegyptium has a typical three-host life-cycle. Whereas its larvae and nymphs are less host-specific feeding on a variety of tetrapods, tortoises of the genus Testudo are principal hosts of adults. Ticks retained this trait also in our study under laboratory conditions, while adults were reluctant to feed on mammalian hosts. Combination of feeding larvae and nymphs on guinea pigs and feeding of adults on Testudo marginata tortoises provided the best results. Feeding period of females was on average 25 days (range 17–44), whereas males remain after female engorgement on tortoise host. Female pre-oviposition period was 14 days (3–31), followed by 24 days of oviposition (18–29). Pre-eclosion and eclosion, both together, takes 31 days (21–43). Larvae fed 5 days (3–9), then molted to nymphs after 17 days (12–23). Feeding period of nymphs lasted 7 days (5–10), engorged nymphs molted to adults after 24 days (19–26). Sex ratio of laboratory hatched H. aegyptium was nearly equal (1:1.09). The average weight of engorged female was 0.95 (0.72–1.12) g. The average number of laid eggs was 6,900 (6,524–7,532) per female, it was significantly correlated with weight of engorged female. Only 2.8% of engorged larvae and 1.8% of engorged nymphs remained un-molted and died. Despite the use of natural host species, feeding success of females reached only 45%. The whole life-cycle was completed within 147 days (98–215).  相似文献

Length–weight relationships were determined for three fish species (Pseudogyrinocheilus prochilus Sauvage & Dabry de Thiersant, 1874; Folifer brevifilis Peters, 1881; and Garra imberba Garman, 1912). Samples were collected from the Wujiang River in China, from May to July in 2009–2011 using gillnets (25 × 12 m, mesh size 0.5 cm) and fish cages (0.5 × 0.5 × 10 m, mesh size 0.5 cm mesh). Length–weight relationships for these three fish species were determined for the first time.  相似文献

Presented are the relationship between standard length (SL) and weight (W) for 12 fish species in Tibet, China, representing three families and six genera from the Lhasa River. All fish samples were collected by either electro‐shocker (12 V, 200 Hz), fish cages (mouth opening: 40 × 40 cm2, 5 m), or drift gillnets (3 × 1.5 m; mesh‐size: 3 cm to 8 cm) from different areas in the Lhasa River Basin, August and September 2015. Parameter b ranged from 2.88 to 3.29, and all correlation coefficient (r2) values were higher than 0.95. Length–weight relationships (LWRs) for three of the species as well as one maximum length are first reports for FishBase.  相似文献

Length-weight relationships (LWRs) were assessed from four fish species in Hei River in northwest China. All specimens were collected using (fishing1 km along the river and 3 meters along the river bank) and netting (gill nets, nets: 30 × 1.2 m; mesh size: 3 × 3 cm) and shrimp cages (nets: 20.0 × 0.5 × 0.4m; mesh size: 0.5 cm) seasonally from April 2019 to October 2020. The gill nets and shrimp cages were soaked in water in the afternoon and pulled in around 10 a.m. the next day after an overnight stay. These specimens were measured for total length (L, 0.1 cm) and body weight (W, 0.1 g) while the specimens were fresh. The parameters for the LWRs were estimated with the basic statistical analyses. The study provided the new maximum total length for Gymnocypris chilianensis (21.0 cm) and Triplophysa tenuis (17.0 cm).  相似文献

The morphology of eggs and larvae of Awaous melanocephalus is described. The eggs measured 0.33–0.35 mm in long-axis diameter and 0.32–0.34 mm in short-axis diameter. Newly hatched larvae (0.90–0.99 mm in notochord length, NL; 0.93–1.04 mm in total length, TL) were poorly developed, lacking a mouth and having a large yolk sac and unpigmented eyes. The mouth opened and the eyes became fully pigmented 3 days after hatching (1.78–2.00 mm NL, 1.88–2.10 mm TL). The yolk sac was completely absorbed 5 days after hatching at a water temperature of 27°–28°C.  相似文献

Identifying the maternal origin of dispersed seeds is a challenging task because it is impossible to directly track seed movement once an animal has ingested them. However, recent development of molecular techniques allows us to identify the maternal origin of dispersed seeds in natural plant populations. Here we analyzed the maternal origin of Myrica rubra seeds found in the feces of Yakushima macaques. We detected a high level of diversity among the dispersed seeds, with an average of 3.0 maternal origins (range 1–9) in each feces. The average dispersal distance was 270.0 m (range 20.4–634.0 m) and the average of distance between maternal trees of dispersed seeds in the same feces was 161.5 m (range 0–573.9 m). These results suggest that seed dispersal by macaques plays an important role in maintaining the genetic diversity of Myrica rubra populations.  相似文献

Ontogenetic changes in habitat use by whitefish,Coregonus lavaretus   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Synopsis The whitefish, Coregonus lavaretus, in the lake Mj?sa exhibited two niche changes during their life cycle. Juveniles (< 25 cm body length) were confined to the shallow (0–30 m) epibenthic zone. Medium sized whitefish (25–35 cm body length) expanded their habitat use to include the deep (30–90 m) epibenthic zone as well as the pelagic zone. From a body length of 35 cm, habitat use was restricted to the deep epibenthic zone. Small fish in the shallow epibenthic zone ate small and medium-sized prey (zooplankton, insect larvae and surface insects). Medium-sized fish in this zone were in addition feeding on the larger amphipod, Pallasea quadrispinosa. In the pelagic zone, the diet of medium-sized whitefish was dominated by zooplankton, although some larger prey like surface insects and age-0 smelt, Osmerus eperlanus, were also eaten. In the deep epibenthic zone, the diet of both medium-sized and large (< 35 cm) whitefish consisted mainly of the large prey P. quadrispinosa.  相似文献
