Feeding experiments with two species of carnivorous copepod, Mesocyclops longisetus (Thiebaud) and Mesocyclops kieferi Van de Velde from Barra Bonita, a eutrophic reservoir in São Paulo, Brasil, were performed using two common types of prey: Ceriodaphnia cornuta, a cladoceran, with a mean body length of 464 µm (including spines) or 393 µm (without spines), and Brachionus calyciflorus, a rotifer with a mean body length of 350 µm (including spines) or 279 µm (without spines).Both species showed higher consumption rates on Brachionus than on Ceriodaphnia. For Mesocyclops longisetus, the average rates were: 2.19 prey ind–1 h–1 (Brachionus), and 1.30 prey ind–1 h–1 (Ceriodaphnia). For Mesocyclops kieferi, the rates were 1.85 prey ind–1 h–1 (Brachionus) and 0.60 prey ind–1 h–1 (Ceriodaphnia). We investigated the biomass, primary productivity, species diversity and their controlling factors in the deeper region of the Barra Bonita reservoir (22°29S and 48°34W) in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. To accomplish this, short term changes (days and month) were measured during two periods of the year, winter 1993 and summer 1994. The response of the phytoplankton communities to the variability of the system, taking into account the Intermediate Disturbance Hypothesis (IDH), indicated that the frequency and intensity of the disturbances have a critical influence on the establishment of the communities. In Barra Bonita Reservoir the conditions for mixing in the winter were probably important for maintaining high diversity. On the other hand, in summer, the concentrations of suspended material, the high temperatures, and the greater stability of the water column, were probably responsible for permitting the establishment of Microcystis aeruginosa.  相似文献

The partially-purified, thermally-stable trehalase from conidia of Humicola grisea was highly specific for trehalose and was free of potentially interfering activities. The enzyme was fully stable when stored in solution at -15°C for at least 6 months. Microsporum gypseum is not a common agent of human dermatophytosis. To the best of our knowledge, this fungus has not been described in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients. We report a tinea corporis infection with atypical presentation caused by M. gypseum in two patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) studied at the São Paulo Hospital (São Paulo, Brazil).This revised version was published online in October 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Species richness of plankton was studied in a eutrophic reservoir (Barra Bonita Reservoir) of the Middle Tietê River, São Paulo State, Brazil, during the period 1985–1986. This reservoir is formed by two rivers: the Tietê and the Piracicaba (the main tributaries), of which the Tiête is more eutrophic, having conductivity and nutrient concentration values twice those of the Piracicaba. In addition, the reservoir is fed by 114 smaller tributaries. Monthly sampling was carried out at three stations representing different environmental conditions: St1 on the Tietê, S2 on the Piracicaba, and St3 at the confluence of the two rivers. For the phytoplankton community, the Piracicaba River (St2) proved the richest site, with a listed 72 species with abundance of Chlorophyta, while St1 and St3 registered 59 and 50 species, respectively, with abundance of Cyanophyta. For the zooplankton community a great difference was not registered in species number at the three stations but the species composition and dominant species of rotifers and copepods were quite different. The occurrence of Mesocyclops meridianus and Metacyclops mendocinus, specific for St2;Mesocyclops ogunnus and Notodiaptomus iheringi, specific for St1, and that of these two species plus Mesocyclops meridianusat St3 shows that the conditions combining at this station were favorable to Mesocyclops meridianus but not to Metacyclops mendocinus. Both for phytoplankton and zooplankton, high values found of species richness were compared to species richness of natural lakes, e.g., Dom Helvecio, a monomictic stable lake in eastern Brazil, and another fifteen lakes in the same region.In conclusion, this work shows that environmental gradients are strong selective factors that enhance plankton richness in eutrophic reservoirs exhibiting environmental instability. This fact could explain the presence of a high number of plankton species associated with a high number of individuals in Barra Bonita Reservoir, supporting the effects of the intermediate disturbance hypothesis.  相似文献

A freshly-prepared yeast extract at 30 or 50 g/l improved the growth of Bradyrhizobium japonicum SEMIA 587 in a 5-l stirred fermenter. Mesostoma sp., isolated from different lakes in Brazil, was taken to the laboratory and fed Moina sp. The vertical position of satiated and non-satiated individuals was monitored in 25 cm high columns exposed to natural sunlight. Phototactic responses were studied under standardised experimental conditions.Satiated individuals resided nearer to the bottom than non-satiated Mesostoma. Non-satiated individuals showed an irregular vertical distribution due to swimming behaviour, whereas satiated animals remained stationary.  相似文献

Zooplankton composition of ten reservoirs in southern Brazil   总被引:5,自引:2,他引:3  
The zooplankton of ten reservoirs of Sao Paulo State was analyzed as part of a larger project, Typology of Reservoirs of São Paulo State.Twenty-four genera of Rotifera, six species of Copepoda and at least nine species of Cladocera were found in samples collected on four occasions in 1979. In general, Rotifera dominated in most reservoirs, although fluctuations occurred during the year.The reservoirs were arranged in four groups, according to zooplankton density, whose range was 10 to 500 i 1–1.The average composition of Crustacea, in number of species at any one time is comparable to those of other water bodies, being a little higher than that of Colorado lakes.The number of species of limnetic Cladocera in Brazil is between those of Holarctic Region and Tropical Asia. Ceriodaphnia cornuta and Bosminopsis deitersi, and a few species of Daphnia are typical of Brazilian zooplankton. Thermocyclops crassus is common in the southern reservoirs but T. minutus seems to be more widely distributed in Brazil. Calanoida occurred in relatively few reservoirs in São Paulo and usually one species at one time. Brachionus and Keratella were more abundant closer to the Equator then to the Tropics, where other genera seem to be more abundant.The range in size of the planktonic Crustacea is relatively small when compared to temperate lakes, being similar to that of other tropical lakes.  相似文献

Mesostoma species and other typhloplanid flatworms are predators found in a wide variety of habitats. Laboratory observations of some Mesostoma spp found in shallow aquatic habitats (referred to as littoral species) have revealed a wide variety of prey killing mechanisms: 1) mucus trapping, 2) sit-and-wait predation, 3) releasing a toxin into the water, and 4) active searching. We review the existing literature on these mechanisms. We also describe for the first time the predatory behavior of a pelagic Mesostoma sp. found in Brazilian lakes.The existing literature is also reviewed to assess the potential impact of Mesostoma species and related genera on the aquatic invertebrate community. Mesostoma has a high potential for population increase and has been found in high densities in some shallow aquatic habitats. Single prey experiments show that a number of Mesostoma species feed heavily on mosquito larvae, some chironomid larvae and some daphnids but considerably less on most copepods and ostracods. Prey preference experiments reflect the same trends. Hence, these predation studies suggest that the flatworms, at high densities, should reduce populations of certain prey speces and, consequently, alter community structure. Field studies support this prediction. Mesostoma species, at high densities, appear to be important predators of mosquito larvae in shallow aquatic habitats even under conditions where high densities of planktivorous fishes had little impact. They also appear to alter zooplankton community structure. However, much of the field evidence is correlational and not experimental. No studies have assessed the impact of pelagic typhloplanids on zooplankton community structure.It is concluded that many more manipulative field experiments are needed to assess the impact of typhloplanids on aquatic invertebrate communities.  相似文献

The decrease in viscosity is widely used to estimate the activity of pectinolytic enzymes. The effects of u.v. light and of several chemical agents on spores of the tetracycline producer Streptomyces aureofaciens MT1 were studied using survival curves and induction of histidine prototrophic revertants (his +). Spores were highly resistant to u.v.; NTG induced most his + revertants. 4-Nitroquinoline-1-oxide and methyl methanesulphonate also gave good yields of revertants. In order to study isolation within the salians subgroup, pair mating crosses involving its 7 species were performed. The results of testing different interspecific combinations varied from complete isolation at the insemination level to the production of fertile hybrids. Some isolation indices are proposed: Ii (isolation index at the insemination level), Fi (isolation index at the fertilization level), Ti (total isolation index), and Ai (average isolation index). A schema of the biological relationships on the basis of the isolation degree is also presented for the 7 species of the subgroup.Part of this study was included in the thesis submitted for the PH.D. degree at the University of São Paulo and was performed during the tenure of a fellowship supported by the Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo.  相似文献

Among the isolates from soil of corn and sugar cane plantations in São Paulo State, Brazil, two new species ofNeosartorya, N. botucatensis andN. paulistensis, are described and illustrated.Neosartorya botucatensis differs from the other known species of the genus in having ascospores with long spines on the convex walls.Neosartorya paulistensis is characterized by its ascospore walls with spinose and verruculose ornamentation. I present evidence from two field studies and one laboratory experiment that the predatory flatworm, tentatively indentified as Mesostoma nr. lingua, can be important in organizing invertebrate communities in rice fields. In the first field study, I assessed the importance of various predators including two fishes, in explaining among-plot variation in mosquito abundance during a five week interval. Mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) abundance was not significantly associated with densities of either mosquito, Culex tarsalis or Anopheles freeborni, except for the final week. Associations between green sunfish (Lepomis cyanellus) juveniles and mosquitoes were demonstrated for only A. freeborni — a positive association. Densities of Mesostoma were negatively associated with C. tarsalis and A. freeborni densities. C. tarsalis, protected from flatworms in small-mesh cages, had a much greater survival rate than those that were exposed in large-mesh cages. C. tarsalis survival, when left unprotected in large-mesh cages, was negatively correlated with field densities of flatworms and with the number of flatworms found inside the cages. Survival was also positively correlated with field densities of mosquitoes.In the second field study, Mesostoma densities were negatively correlated with C. tarsalis, A. freeborni, Cladocera and Ostracoda in rice field enclosures early in the season. Cyclopoid copepod densities were not significantly associated with this predator.In a laboratory experiment, predation by Mesostoma on C. tarsalis larvae was reduced when presented with an alternative prey, Moina micrura (a cladoceran).These results suggest that flatworms, via predation, can have large effects on the structure of mosquito and zooplankton communities in rice fields.  相似文献

The rhabdocoel Mesostoma lingua is a common inhabitant of rock bluff ponds in the area of Churchill, Manitoba. Unlike most flatworms it has the ability to prey actively on zooplankton. Among the zooplankton, Mesostoma prefers Daphnia pulex, Simocephalus vetulus, and Diaptomus tyrrelli. Larger calanoid copepods are difficult to capture and take much longer to consume. Growth in Mesostoma is maintained when individuals consume 0.5 Daphnia day–1 and is maximal at 4 Daphnia day–1. In comparison, Mesostoma maintained growth only when offered the copepod Diaptomus victoriaensis at the rate of 8–10 individuals-day–1. Mesostoma may be an important agent in structuring pond zooplankton communities in the arctic, producing a shift in dominance away from cladocerans such as Daphnia toward larger calanoid copepods.  相似文献

High activities of extracellular pectinase with viscosity-diminishing and reducing groups-releasing activities were produced by Penicillium frequentans after 48 h at 35°C, in agitated cultures supplemented with 0.5% citrus pectin and initial pH of 2.5. Under these conditions the fungus also produced high activity of pectinesterase. At an initial pH of 7.0 or 8.0, pectin lyase activity was also detected. Enzyme activity releasing reducing sugars was more stable at 50°C than viscosity-diminishing activity. A case of paracoccidioidomycosis with ocular involvement is studied. Brazilian literature is reviewed. The scarcity of human ocular mycosis is commented on. The most frequent clinic aspects of ocular lesions in natural mycosis are described.
Resumo Um caso de paracoccidioidomicose pulmonar e linfática seguido de comprometimento conjuntivo-palpebral é estudado, em São Paulo.A literatura nacional é revista. As lesões oculares, mais frequentemente verificadas, na paracoccidioidomicose natural são descritas, minuciosamente. O pequeno número de casos humanos com comprometimento ocular é discutido.A severidade e a frequencia das lesões oculares em animais inoculados intracardiacamente, com cultivos de P. brasiliensis sugerem disseminação hematogênica ocular da paracoccidioidomicose humana.

Experiments were performed in mesocosms placed in a shallow eutrophic reservoir for the purpose of testing a nutrient removal technique as an eutrophication reduction method. Garças Pond is in the Parque Estadual das Fontes do Ipiranga Biological Reserve, located in the southeastern part of the Municipality of São Paulo (São Paulo State). Three different treatments were designed and each was conducted within two enclosures (closed systems) containing 360 l of water. Mesocosms built with polyethylene bags and PVC pipes were attached to the reservoir bottom. Treatment dilutions were made by using different proportions of pond and oligotrophic tributary water, following Carlsons trophic state index modified by Toledo and collaborators. Dilutions constituted the oligo-, meso-, and eutrophic treatments. Ten abiotic and nine biological variables were simultaneously studied over 31 days. Species richness, diversity, evenness, and dominance are discussed. Dissolved oxygen concentration decrease was observed in all treatments during the entire study period, whereas ammonium and free CO2 values increased, indicating decomposition process presence in all treatments. Nutrient impoverishment induced P limitation in all treatments during most of the study period, a fact that, considered together with the free CO2 concentration increase, low alkalinity values, and pH reduction throughout the period clearly indicated a photosynthetic activity decrease. Confinement and nutrient dilution led to changes in floristic composition as well as in phytoplankton biomass in all treatments. The initial community mainly represented by R- and S-strategists (Planktothrix, Cylindrospermopsis and Microcystis) was gradually replaced by C-strategists (Cryptomonas spp., Chloroccoccales in general). Characteristics of the initial succession phases were observed in all treatments. Thus, the community was first inhabited by fast growing species but no important biomass contribution of size fractions was observed. Space liberated by blue-green species that did not adapt to the new nutrient-impoverished conditions was gradually occupied by other algal species, which together contributed to most of the total biomass registered in all treatments.  相似文献

The feeding activity along the day cycle and the time consumed for extracellular digestion were evaluated in the portunids C. ornatus and C. danae. Swimming crabs were obtained from trawling in Ubatuba bay, São Paulo, Brazil, during both the rainy and dry seasons. In each season, daily scheduled samples were taken at dawn (±6 h), noon (±12 h), dusk (±18 h) and midnight (±24 h). All individuals were dissected and the degree of stomach replenishment was recorded. In order to estimate the time elapsed for extracellular digestion, crabs were fed, and groups were dissected at 30 min intervals to check the conditions of their stomachs. In general, both species show a higher feeding activity during periods of lower light intensity, as evidenced by an increased percentage of full stomachs in dusk and midnight samples. The obtained results support higher feeding activity at night in these species and indicate short time for extracellular digestion, not exceeding 8 h. Nevertheless, full stomachs were recorded in all sampling schedules. In this case, it should be considered that elimination of certain food items such as fish bones, mollusk shells and carapace fragments of crustaceans could take more time than other items. Additionally, some crab species could require a cycle of cell replacement in the midgut gland epithelium until they can take their next meal.  相似文献
