Effects of light and nutrients on the net accumulation and elemental composition of epilithon in boreal lakes 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
1. Two experiments in the Experimental Lakes Area (ELA) in north-western Ontario, Canada examined the effects of light and two key elements on the net accumulation and elemental composition of epilithon. In Lake (L) 224, benthic algae were grown under different light intensity and phosphorus supply, while in L302S we provided three levels of two different carbon sources (bicarbonate and glucose) to algae colonizing nutrient-diffusing substrata. After 1 month of accumulation, we sampled biofilms for chlorophyll (chl), carbon (C), phosphorus (P) and algal C.
2. Increased C supply did not significantly affect algal growth (C or chl) or elemental composition (C/P ratios) in L302S. However, P enrichment increased chl and algal C, dramatically reduced the C/P ratio of epilithon, and did not affect total organic C in L224. Phosphorus enrichment also increased the proportion of algal material in the total particulate organic matter and altered the taxonomic composition of algae in L224 biofilms. Shading had no significant effect on the C/P ratio and total organic C in epilithon from the L224 experiment.
3. Our results demonstrate that P supply affects the elemental composition of organic matter that collects on rock substrata. It thus appears that low availability of P relative to C and light drives the formation and retention of high C/P organic matter on rock surfaces in oligotrophic boreal lakes. 相似文献

A comparison of periphyton community structural and functional responses to heavy metals 总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
This study evaluates the effectiveness of community production and respiration measurements as monitoring tools for environmental impact evaluations and compares these data to community structural data.In Prickly Pear Creek, Montana, production and respiration rates were determined for periphyton communities in control, impact and recovery reaches using colonized granite substrates and sealed plexiglas chambers. Values for gross primary productivity (GPP), community respiration (CR24), ash-free dry mass (AFDM) and chlorophyll a content (Chla) were obtained for each granite slab. Of these, AFDM, Chla and CR24 were statistically significant among sites (P0.01). Although mean values for GPP appeared to differ among reaches, statistical differences could not be inferred because of large variances associated with this measure. These data indicate that inherent variability may limit the use of community function measures in routine environmental monitoring. However, production/respiration methods provide valuable data about emergent properties of aquatic communities that cannot be derived from routine population censuses. 相似文献

1. Littoral biota in boreal lakes are known to assimilate epilithon. Being able to predict the stable isotopic composition of these alga will help to identify those systems in which δ13 C and δ15 N analysis can be used in foodweb investigations of allochthony and biomagnification.
2. In a survey of 15 boreal lakes, the concentration of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) explained 76% of the variation in epilithon δ13 C, and 86% of the variation in epilithon δ15 N.
3. Because both δ13 C and δ15 N values were depressed and similar to terrestrial values in humic (high DOC) lakes, it will be more difficult to successfully employ stable isotopic techniques for estimating allochthony in such systems. A multi-lake comparison of epilithic diatom communities on natural and artificial substrates 总被引:2,自引:2,他引:2
In a multi-season, multi-lake study of epilithic diatom communities, glass slide artificial substrate samplers provided poor representation of communities on natural substrates. Percent similarities between the two communities averaged only 37 over the course of the study. Overall, natural substrates exhibited greater species richness than artificial samplers, particularly during the summer, although this difference was slight. Patterns of selection and inhibition by artificial substrates of individual diatom species varied by both season and lake. Members of the genus Cymbella, particularly C. microcephala, appeared to be the most consistently inhibited, while Achnanthes minutissima was often selected for. In spite of the great differences between the two substrate types, replicability of artificial substrates was very high, and could prove to be a more important quality in monitoring applications than accurate representation of the natural community. 相似文献

1. Lake 302S in the Experimental Lakes Area of Canada was acidified from pH 6.7 (1981) to 5.1 (1986). The pH was further reduced to 4.5 in 1987 and held at that level until 1991. From 1992 to 1995, the pH was allowed to increase to a target value of 5.8.
2. The response of the phytoplankton community to decreasing pH from 6.0 to 5.1 was similar to that observed in another experimentally acidified lake (223) and in other atmospherically acidified lakes. Acidification affected species diversity of both the phytoplankton and epilithon. Phytoplankton diversity was positively correlated with pH. Epilithic algal diversity was more variable and did not correlate with pH.
3. Phytoplankton biomass was enhanced by acidification as the assemblage shifted from a dominance of chrysophytes to large dinoflagellates ( Gymnodinium sp. and Peridinium inconspicuum ). Epilithon biomass was unaffected, but dominance shifted from filamentous cyanophytes ( Lyngbya ) to acidophilic diatoms ( Tabellaria quadriseptata and Anomoeonis brachysira ).
4. The only taxon to be similarly affected in both the phytoplankton and epilithon was the cyanobacteria, being significantly reduced below pH 5.1. During early recovery (pH 5.5–5.8), cyanobacteria increased and species present prior to acidification recolonized both habitats.

1. Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) deliver salmon‐derived nutrients (SDN) to the streams in which they spawn. However, many stream parameters, such as discharge and spawner abundance, can vary from year to year, which could alter the quantity and flux of SDN. 2. Over six consecutive years, we studied responses in streamwater chemistry and epilithon (i.e. the microbial community on submerged rocks) to salmon spawners in Fish Creek, southeastern Alaska, U.S.A. The lower reach of Fish Creek receives spawners of several salmon species, while the upper reach does not receive spawners because of an intervening waterfall. 3. We estimated salmon spawner biomass, analysed water chemistry [ammonium, nitrate, soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC)], and measured epilithon abundance [as chlorophyll a (chl a) and ash‐free dry mass (AFDM)] in Fish Creek. Measurements were made in both the upper and lower reaches, before, during and after the major salmon runs. 4. Absolute values and relative differences indicated that the presence of salmon spawners consistently increased dissolved ammonium (by 58 μg L−1 on average, 41× over background), SRP (by 6 μg L−1, 14×), epilithon chl a (by 35 mg m−2, 16×), and epilithon AFDM (by 3 g m−2, 8×). Salmon spawners did not increase nitrate or DOC in either absolute or relative amounts. The persistence and magnitude of spawner effects varied among years and appeared to reflect weather‐driven hydrology as well as spawner biomass. 5. Salmon‐derived nutrients can stimulate the growth of primary producers by increasing streamwater nutrient concentrations, but this positive influence may be modulated by other factors, such as water temperature and discharge. To better assess the ecological influence of SDN on stream biota, future studies should explicitly consider the role of key environmental factors and their temporal and spatial dynamics in stream ecosystems. 相似文献

Stream epilithic, epipelic and epiphytic diatoms: habitat fidelity and use in biomonitoring 总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9
We compared the use of epilithic, epiphytic, and epipelic diatom communities in stream biomonitoring by investigating species composition and relationships with measured water quality variables in two tributaries of the Grand River, Ontario, Canada. Although ordination showed some separation of the epilithon from other habitats, clear habitat preferences and seasonality were not identified. Canonical correspondence analysis showed that measured water quality variables explained the major gradients in the diatom data for all three habitats. The diatoms from each habitat were strongly related to alkalinity, suspended solids, biological oxygen demand and conductivity, and in addition, epipelic and epiphytic diatoms showed significant relationships with total phosphorus. It was concluded that although some species were more abundant in one habitat than the others, the community structure of the epilithic, epiphytic and epipelic habitats from these streams was not consistently different. The results indicate no apparent benefit to sampling discrete habitats for water quality monitoring using diatoms, however, the best relationship are obtained using the sum of the diatom data from all three habitats. 相似文献

1. Variation in resource subsidies can create or reinforce heterogeneity in recipient ecosystems. Related activities of organisms delivering resource subsidies, such as ecosystem engineering by Pacific salmon spawners (Oncorhynchus spp.), also alter heterogeneity. We studied whether heterogeneity in stream environmental conditions and spawner abundances were reflected in the net ecological effects of salmon (i.e. enrichment by resource subsidies and disturbance by ecosystem engineering) on benthic biofilm. 2. We sampled seven Southeast Alaska streams over 3 years, both before and during the salmon run. In each stream and year, stream environmental characteristics and their influence on responses of benthic biofilm [mean and coefficient of variation of chlorophyll a (chl a), ash‐free dry mass (AFDM) and autotrophic index (AFDM:chl a)] to spawners were assessed. 3. Streams and periods before and during the salmon run were distinct based on their environmental characteristics. The responses of most biofilm metrics to spawners were stream‐ and year‐specific, suggesting that the ecological effect of spawners ranged from net enrichment to net disturbance depending on the stream or year studied. The environmental context, especially temperature, large wood, and sediment size, explained >50% of biofilm variability during the run, but <30% over the entire study, suggesting that salmon can alter environmental constraints. 4. Precision of biofilm estimates improved by increasing either the number of streams or the number of years sampled (i.e. spatial or temporal replication). However, combining data from different North Pacific Rim ecoregions inflated the confidence interval as compared with a single ecoregion, indicating the importance of regional environmental contexts for net salmon effects. 5. Our results suggest that biofilm responses to salmon can vary greatly, even within a single ecoregion, and that environmental conditions can modify net salmon effects. Micronuclei (MN) in blood lymphocytes were determined in 31 male workers occupationally exposed to lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), and
cadmium (Cd) and 20 control workers matched for age and smoking habits. Exposed workers have higher MN mean values than control
workers (p<0.01). In exposed workers, blood Pb concentrations were also significantly higher than in control workers (p<0.001), but the mean concentrations of Zn and Cd in the blood were not statistically significant compared to the controls
(p>0.05). These results suggest that lead may be genotoxic and the human lymphocyte micronucleus test can be used to assess

The excretion of mercury, copper and zinc in urine, and mercury in whole blood andplasma, was determined in 40 chloralkali workers exposed to mercury vapour and 40age-matched referents. The Hg concentrations in whole blood, plasma and urine werehigher in the exposed group (35 nmol l, 30 nmol l,and 11.5 nmol mmol creatinine, respectively) in comparison with thereference group (15 nmol l, 6.3 nmol l, and 1.8nmol mmol creatinine, respectively). The urinary copper excretionwas similar in the two groups, while U-Zn excretion was significantly higher (P = 0.04)in the exposed group, median 0.83 mmol mmol creatinine versus 0.76mnmol mmol creatinine in the reference group. In a subgroup of exposedworkers with current U-Hg above 11.5 nmol lmmolcreatinine (20 mg g creatinine) the medianU-Zn was 1.1 mmol mmol creatinine. In both groups smokers had highU-Zn levels than non smokers. When both U-Hg and smoking were taken into account in alinear regression model, there was a significant association between U-Hg and U-Zn inthe combined group of exposed and referents (P = 0.002). This study indicates thatmercury exposure in humans, as in animals, causes increased urinary excretion of zinc.The mechanisms may be induced synthesis of metallothionein in the kidneys, displacementof Zn from preexisting metallothionein by Hg, or a decreased reabsorption of zinc in thekidneys owing to a slight tubular dysfunction. 相似文献

在崇明东滩藻类盐渍带大型底栖动物取样调研的基础上,依据食性、生活型以及传统分类特征进行3种形式的功能群划分,并分析其组成与时空分布特征。调查期间,共采集到大型底栖动物19种,主要优势种(IRI20)均属于双壳类。结果表明:功能群组成存在明显的时空变化特征;对同一功能群及相应的功能群整体而言,其空间分布较其时间分布差异更为显著;但不同划分方式功能群整体时空分布特征有所不同,其密度与物种数均以生活型功能群整体的时空分布差异最为显著,而食性功能群则最不明显;单个功能群的密度与物种数以生活型功能群中的底上型功能群的时空分布差异最为显著;不同划分方式功能群所反映的大型底栖动物群落相关信息存在差异,在具体研究中应考虑不同功能群划分方式的组合,以达到多层次反映系统信息的目的。 相似文献

Seasonal content of total soluble carbohydrate, total soluble protein, free fatty acids and alkaloids were examined in a population of Ceratophyllum demersum growing in a pond on the southwestern edge of the Canadian Shield. Total soluble carbohydrate and total soluble protein were inversely correlated. Free fatty acids were dominated by (16:0 + 16:1), 18:2 and 18:3. Relative proportions of the different free fatty acids remained roughly constant throughout the season. Alkaloid concentrations showed large fluctuations, with the highest values found during the first half of the season. Carbohydrate and protein contents of associated periphyton were not correlated with host macrophyte metabolism. 相似文献

Abstract Studies of the micro-distribution of herbivorous lotic macroinvertebrates have tended to rely on short-term experiments. While these experiments have provided information on the factors that determine the distributions of herbivorous invertebrates, they ignore the complexity of the epilithon as a food source, any interaction between physical and biological factors and the possibility that the factors that determine an invertebrate species’ distribution may vary through time. Five colonization experiments were performed in an Australian upland stream to determine the role of epilithon abundance in the distribution of an abundant invertebrate (Agapetus monticolus: Trichoptera). Artificial cobbles with different types and amounts of epilithon were placed in the Taggerty River at two sites and the response of A. monticolus recorded. The experiments revealed that, although A. monticolus expressed a preference for patches of epilithon with abundant periphyton, the response varied among experiments performed at different times and was always secondary to the flow preferences of A. monticolus. Studies that fail to acknowledge the presence of temporal variation in the response of animals to their environment run the risk that they will over- or underestimate the importance of particular factors because of the timing of their experiment. 相似文献

Temporal changes in epilithon biomass and benthic macroinvertebrate density were investigated in the Ashley River, a flood-prone river with an unpredictable discharge regime. Biomass, primary production and respiration of the epilithic community were highest in spring when filamentous algae were present and lowest following two large floods that occurred in close succession. Sixty invertebrate species were taken in benthic samples including 24 species of Trichoptera, 15 Diptera and 4 Ephemeroptera. Larvae of the mayfly Deleatidium (Leptophlebiidae) were numerically dominant and comprised up to 83 % of the fauna in any one month. Mean benthic invertebrate density was highest (9170–18 580 m–2) following long periods of low stable flow (< 30 m–3 s–1) and lowest (230 m–2) after a major flood (454 m–3 s–1). Reductions in benthic density occurred when flow exceeded about 30 m–3 s–1, the minimum discharge at which small cobbles are moved. Refuge seeking behaviours, flexible life histories and effective recolonization mechanisms enable the benthos of the Ashley River to persist and recover from frequent, temporally unpredictable disturbances. 相似文献

A 15‐week experiment was performed in a riverside laboratory flume (with diverted river water) to check variations of river biofilm structure (biomass, algal and bacterial compositions) and function (community gross primary production GPP and respiration) under constant flow while water quality went through natural temporal variations. One major suspended matter pulse coinciding with one river flood was recorded after 10 weeks of experiment. Epilithic biofilm first exhibited a 10‐week typical pattern of biomass accrual reaching 33 g ash‐free dry matter (AFDM) m–2 and 487 mg chlorophyll‐a m–2 and then, experienced a shift to dominance of loss processes (loss of 60% AFDM and 80% chlorophyll‐a) coinciding with the main suspended matter pulse. Algal diversity remained low and constant during the experiment: Fragilaria capucina and Encyonema minutum always contribute over 80% of cell counts. DGGE banding patterns discriminated between two groups that corresponded to samples before and after biomass loss, indicating major changes in the bacterial community composition. GPP/R remained high during the experiment, suggesting that photoautotrophic metabolism prevailed and detachment was not autogenic (i.e., due to algal senescence or driven by heterotrophic processes within the biofilm). 1. Nutrient diffusing substrata were used to determine the effect of added inorganic nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) on the development of epilithic and epixylic biofilms in 10 North American streams. Four treatments of diffusing substrata were used: Control (agar only), N addition (0.5 m NaNO3), P addition (0.5 m KH2PO4), and N + P combined (0.5 m NaNO3 + 0.5 m KH2PO4). Agar surfaces were covered with glass fibre filters (for epilithon) or discs of untreated white oak wood veneer (for epixylon). 2. We found that if algae showed significant response to nutrient addition, N limitation (either N alone or N with P) was the most frequent response both on GF/F filters and on wood. Despite the low dissolved nutrient concentrations in our study streams, more than a third of the streams did not show any response to N or P addition. In fact, P was never the sole limiting nutrient for algal biofilms in this study. 3. Nutrient addition influenced algal colonisation of inorganic versus organic substrata in different ways. The presence of other biofilm constituents (e.g. fungi or bacteria) may influence whether algal biomass on wood increased in response to nutrient addition. Algae on organic and inorganic substrata responded similarly to nutrient addition in only one stream. 4. Fungal biomass on wood was nutrient limited in six of 10 study streams. N limitation of fungal biomass (with or without secondary P limitation) was most frequent, but P limitation did occur in two streams. 5. Our results show that biomass responses to nutrient addition by the heterotrophic and autotrophic components of the epixylic biofilm were different, though both experienced the same stream nutrient conditions. For algae and fungi growing on wood, limiting nutrients were rarely similar. Photosynthesis and respiration by the epilithic community on cobble in an arctic tundra stream, were estimated from oxygen
production and consumption in short-term (4–12 h), light and dark, chamber incubations. Chlorophyll a was estimated at the end of each incubation by quantitatively removing the epilithon from the cobble.
Fertilization of the river with phosphate alone moderately increased epilithic chlorophyll a, photosynthesis, and respiration. Fertilization with ammonium sulfate and phosphate, together, greatly increased each of
these variables. Generally, under both control and fertilized conditions, epilithic chlorophyll a concentrations (mg m−2), photosynthesis, and respiration (mg O2 m−2, h−1) were higher in pools than in riffles. Under all conditions, the P/R ratio was consistent at ∼ 1.8 to 2.0. The vigor of epilithic
algae in riffles, estimated from assimilation coefficients (mg O2 [mg Chl a]−1 h−1) was greater than the vigor of epilithic algae in pools. However, due to the greater accumulation of epilithic chlorophyll
a in pools, total production (and respiration) in pools exceeded that in riffles. The epilithic community removed both ammonium
and nitrate from water in chambers. Epilithic material, scoured by high discharge in response to storm events and suspended
in the water column, removed ammonium and may have increased nitrate concentrations in bulk river water. However, these changes

Hyperzincemia has been reported to cause alterations in the homeostasis of glycid metabolism. To determine this effect on
plasma glucose and insulin levels, we studied 36 normal individuals of both sexes aged 22–26 y after a 12-h fast. The tests
were initiated at 7:00am when an antecubital vein was punctured and a device for infusion was installed and maintained with physiological saline.
Zinc was administered orally at 8:00am. Subjects were divided into an experimental group of 22 individuals who received doses of 25, 37.5, and 50 mg of zinc and
a control group of 14 individuals. Blood samples were collected over a period of 240 min after the basal samples (−30 and
0 min). We did not detect any change in plasma glucose or insulin levels, a fact that we attribute either to the ineffectiveness
of the 50 mg dose of zinc or to the lack of human response to the acute action of this trace element. The individuals who
ingested zinc showed a significant fall in plasma cortisol, probably caused by the action of this trace element. 相似文献

Valve closure responses of the Asiatic clam Corbicula fluminea exposed to cadmium and zinc 总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
The valve movement patterns of immobilized Asiatic clams (Corbicula fluminea) were monitored during exposure to constant concentrations of cadmium (0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4 mg 1–1) or zinc (0.0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, and 0.9 mg 1–1) for 24 h following a 24-h acclimation period. Data indicate that the duration of response was concentration dependent and toxicity related. Durations of periods with valves parted declined as the concentration of heavy metal increased. Behavior was consistent for both mean time to first closure following the initial exposure and mean time per valve parting episode over a 24-h exposure period. Mean time per valve parting episode during the 24-h exposure period ranged from 600 minutes for control trials to 36 and 69 minutes for the highest concentrations of cadmium and zinc tested, respectively. There was no association between durations of periods with valves sealed and solutions of cadmium; however, lengthening durations of periods with valves sealed coincided with exposure of clams to progressively more concentrated zinc solutions. In addition, Asiatic clams demonstrated a greater rate of response (decline in the duration of periods with valves parted) to progressively more concentrated solutions of cadmium than to comparable increases in the concentrations of zinc solutions. 相似文献
