In this theoretical study, we investigate the effect of different harvesting strategies on the discrete Beverton–Holt model in a deterministic environment. In particular, we make a comparison between the constant, periodic and conditional harvesting strategies. We find that for large initial populations, constant harvest is more beneficial to both the population and the maximum sustainable yield. However, periodic harvest has a short-term advantage when the initial population is low, and conditional harvest has the advantage of lowering the risk of depletion or extinction. Also, we investigate the periodic character under each strategy and show that periodic harvesting drives population cycles to be multiples (period-wise) of the harvesting period.  相似文献

提升森林质量、修复生态功能是东北阔叶红松林生态修复的核心,而阐明林木与林分生长对采伐干扰的响应机理是其中的关键。森林对采伐干扰的响应会受到空间尺度、时间尺度以及干扰程度等因素的综合影响。以往的研究侧重于比较不同采伐处理下林木生长的相对大小,而忽视了不同恢复时间下,林木和林分生长随干扰程度的变化。以吉林蛟河阔叶红松林采伐样地为对象,基于连续四次样地调查数据(2011、2013、2015、2018年),分别探讨了林木和林分生长在不同恢复阶段对不同程度采伐干扰的响应,并通过构建分段模型确定采伐干扰阈值。结果显示:林木和林分生长对采伐干扰的响应并不一致,采伐促进了林木生长,并且林木生长量随采伐强度的升高而升高;采伐降低了林分生产力,林分生产力随采伐强度的升高而降低。林木和林分生长对采伐干扰的响应存在时滞效应:林木和林分生长在采伐后两年内并无显著变化,而在采伐三年后才发生明显变化。此外,分段模型的结果显示:当保留木断面积为21.6 m2/hm2时,林分生产力最高,表明通过密度调整使阔叶红松林胸高断面积维持在21.6 m2/hm2附近,可使林分处于较高的生产力水平、促进森林恢复。研究结果能够为制定科学的阔叶红松林生态修复策略提供技术支撑。  相似文献

  1. Saproxylic beetles have gained increasing attention due to their role in the decomposition of rotting wood in forests. Studying the response of saproxylic beetles to tree harvesting is important for developing harvesting strategies that consider conservation of saproxylic beetle diversity.
  2. We report results from a case study in which we designed four treatment stands to test the effects of forest harvesting intensity on saproxylic beetle diversity, harvest intensities of 0% untreated control (CK), 17.2% light harvest (LT), 34.7% moderate harvest (MT) and 51.9% high harvest (HT). Flight intercept traps were used to collect specimens of saproxylic beetles in each stand at 2, 3 and 4 years post-harvest.
  3. The richness and abundance of saproxylic beetles were higher in MT and HT than in CK. Twelve of the 15 indicator species were significantly associated with MT or HT, whereas only three species were significantly associated with CK.
  4. We found that moderate and high intensity harvesting affected the composition and increased beetle abundance and richness of saproxylic beetles, and light intensity harvesting had no effect on the beetle community in years 2, 3 and 4 post-harvest. There was no difference in the beetle community composition between moderate and high harvest stands.

Theoretical analyses of single‐species models have revealed that the degree of synchrony in fluctuations of geographically separated populations increases with increasing spatial covariation in environmental fluctuations and increased interchange of individuals, but decreases with local strength of density dependence. Here we extend these results to include interspecific competition between two species as well as harvesting. We show that the effects of interspecific competition on the geographical scale of population synchrony are dependent on the pattern of spatial covariation of environmental variables. If the environmental noise is uncorrelated between the competing species, competition generally increases the spatial scale of population synchrony of both species. Otherwise, if the environmental noises are strongly correlated between species, competition generally increases the spatial scale of population synchrony of at least one, but also often of both species. The magnitude of these spatial scaling effects is, however, strongly influenced by the dispersal capacity of the two competing species. If the species are subject to proportional harvesting, this may synchronise population dynamics over large geographical areas, affecting the vulnerability of harvested species to environmental changes. However, the strength of interspecific competition may strongly modify this effect of harvesting on the spatial scale of population synchrony. For example, harvesting of one species may affect the spatial distribution of competing species that are not subject to harvesting. These analytical results provide an important illustration of the importance of applying an ecosystem rather than a single‐species perspective when developing harvest strategies for a sustainable management of exploited species.  相似文献

Shrub willow (Salix spp.) is capable of producing commercially attractive amounts of biomass in short rotations, but harvesting costs and logistics remain a concern. There is a particular need for information about harvesting operations on larger, commercial short‐rotation woody crop systems. Another recent issue on commercial fields in northern New York is commercial growers conducting harvests during the growing season rather than the recommended dormant season when fields may be too wet to harvest. This study evaluated and modeled the in‐field performance of a cut‐and‐chip harvester for almost 700 wagonloads of chips operating in commercial willow fields in a wider array of crop and field conditions than have been previously reported. Analysis indicated that the time of harvest (leaf‐on or leaf‐off) and whether site conditions were wet or dry affected the harvester's material capacity. Mean material capacity was greatest for leaf‐off, dry conditions (71.8 Mg/hr) and lowest for leaf‐on harvests, which were similar for wet (30.4 Mg/hr) and dry conditions (29.7 Mg/hr). Mean crop specific fuel consumption ranged between 1.3 and 3.3 L/Mg, but can get considerably higher for standing biomasses below 40 Mg/ha. Wet ground conditions and leaf‐on harvests tend to decrease material capacity and increase fuel consumption as the harvester has to divert power to forward movement and material processing. Relationships for material capacity and fuel consumption based on standing biomass, time of harvest and ground conditions will be essential for evaluating and modeling the economic and environmental impacts of commercial‐scale willow operations.  相似文献

Nutrient concentrations in current and 1-year old needles from two Picea abies (L.) Karst and two Pinus sylvestris L. stands in Sweden were determined 8–10, 16–18 and 22–24 years after clear-felling and experimental manipulation of harvesting intensity. On all sites, three levels of harvest intensity had been applied in a randomized block design (n=4); (i) conventional stem-only harvesting, where all logging residues (i.e. tops, branches and needles) were evenly distributed on the ground, (ii) harvesting all above-ground tree parts except needles and (iii) above-ground whole-tree harvesting (no residues left on site). At stand age 8–10 years, nitrogen concentrations in the current year needles in plots where all residues or needles only were retained were higher than in whole-tree harvested plots, whereas concentrations of K, Ca and Mg were lower. The latter response was interpreted as a dilution effect. P:N, K:N, Ca:N, Mg:N, Mn:N and Zn:N were in general higher after whole-tree harvesting treatments than after the treatments where all residues or only needles had been left on site. At stand age 16–18 years, no significant differences in nitrogen concentrations were observed between treatments, but the levels of Ca, Mg and Mn in both current and 1-year-old needles were lower after whole-tree harvesting than after the treatments where logging residues remained on site. By contrast, potassium levels in the foliage were highest in treatments where only the needles were left on site, whereas the lowest levels were observed for treatments where all residues was left. At stand age 22–24 years, the treatment effects had diminished, except for the effects on Ca and K on the southern Norway spruce stand. It is concluded that the nutrient release from logging residues enhances nutrient uptake in trees of the succeeding forest generation, but this effect does not occur simultaneously for all elements. Myriophyllum verticillatum L. is the single most obstructive aquatic plant in Irish canals. Because of the importance of these canals as national amenities, considerable resource has been directed towards the long-term control of this aggressive plant. A combination of mechanical harvesting and chemical treatment has traditionally been employed to control Myriophyllum growth but these methods have only provided short-term control. Myriophyllum verticillatum reproduces by producing turions between September and November each year. These over-wintering propagules sink to the canal bed where they remain dormant until February. At a trial site on the Royal Canal turions were harvested in November 1994 and 1995, significantly reducing the number of propagules present. Biomass and plant cover with M. verticillatum throughout the 1995 and subsequent growing seasons was dramatically reduced. The implications for weed control programmes, habitat development and amenity usage are discussed.  相似文献

Changing forest management practices towards more intensive biomass utilization for energy purposes will affect the sustainability of resource management. The Tool for Sustainability Impact Assessment was applied to evaluate the environmental, social, and economic sustainability impacts of the stepwise increased extraction of forest biomass of three typical Scandinavian Scots pine bioenergy production chains (BPCs). The assessed sources of the woody biomass were pellets as a by‐product of the sawmilling industry, wood chips deriving from early whole‐tree harvesting, and residues from final cuttings. Three commercially practiced BPCs were compared. By the additional extraction of biomass for heat production, the employment increased by 0.6 person‐years 1000 m?3 solid wood chips, while there was a decrease in the costs and greenhouse gases emitted per unit of heat consumed. Furthermore this practice did not only add positive socio‐economic but also positive environmental impacts on sustainability, particularly on the greenhouse gas balance and the energy efficiency ratio (input to output ratio along the BPC), which was determined to be 1–24. Potential drawbacks, on the other hand, include decreasing nutrient returns to the soil and the associated potential reduction in future stand productivity. Fertilization might be needed to maintain sustainable forest growth on poor sites.  相似文献

In this work, a new benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′]dithiophene (BDT) building block containing alkylthio naphthyl as a side chain is designed and synthesized, and the resulting polymer, namely PBDTNS‐BDD, shows a lower HOMO energy level than that of its alkoxyl naphthyl counterpart PBDTNO‐BDD. An optimized photovoltaic device using PBDTNS‐BDD as a donor exhibits power conversion efficiencies (PCE) of 8.70% and 9.28% with the fullerene derivative PC71BM and the fullerene‐free small molecule ITIC as acceptors, respectively. Surprisingly, ternary blend devices based on PBDTNS‐BDD and two acceptors, namely PC71BM and ITIC, shows a PCE of 11.21%, which is much higher than that of PBDTNO‐BDD based ternary devices (7.85%) even under optimized conditions.  相似文献

Biogas could provide a more sustainable energy source than wood fuels for rural households in sub‐Saharan African. However, functioning of biogas digesters can be limited in areas of low water availability. The water required is approximately 50 dm3 day?1 for each cow and 10 dm3 day?1 for each pig providing manure to the digester, or 25 (±6) dm3 day?1 for each person in the household, using a digester volume of 1.3 (±0.3) m3 capita?1. Here, we consider the potential of domestic water recycling, rainwater harvesting, and aquaculture to supply the water needed for digestion in different countries of sub‐Saharan Africa. Domestic water recycling was found to be important in every country but was usually insufficient to meet the requirements of the digester, with households in 72% of countries need to collect additional water. Rooftop rainwater harvesting also has an important role, iron roofs being more effective than thatched roofs at collecting water. However, even with an iron roof, the size of roof commonly found in sub‐Saharan Africa (15 to 40 m2) is too small to collect sufficient water, requiring an extra area (in m2) for each person of (R/100) (where R is the rainfall in mm). If there is a local market for fish, stocking a pond with tilapia, fed on plankton growing on bioslurry from the digester, could provide an important source of additional income and hold the water required by the digester. In areas where rainfall is low and seasonal, the fishpond might be stocked only in the rainy season, allowing the pond to be covered during the dry period to reduce evaporation. If evaporative losses (E in mm) exceed rainfall, an extra catchment area is needed to maintain the water level in the pond, equivalent to approximately (1.5 × ((E?R)/R)) m2 for each person in the household.  相似文献

We used a mathematical model to predict and explain the effect of harvesting combined with predation by the Nile perch on Nile tilapia. The model incorporates three developmental stages of each species. The findings show that uncontrolled human exploitation of the stock leads to loss of fish biodiversity in the lake. The results of the study also show that increasing harvesting rate of the mature Nile perch leads to stable stationary states of the system. However, increasing predation rates by Nile perch lead to unstable equilibria.  相似文献

Summary In order to provide autologous adult endothelial cells for the production of cell-lined artificial vascular prostheses, we have developed a method for harvesting large numbers of cells with minimal contamination by other cellular types. In this technique, the vein to be stripped is isolated, removed, and everted over a stainless steel rod. After washing, the vein is incubated in trypsin-EDTA solution followed by collagenase and the endothelial cells flushed off with a stream of culture medium. With care and appropriate timing, the endothelium can be selectively removed leaving the underlying basal lamina intact. A wide range of stressors can cause a dramatic and sudden rise in the death rate in populations, typically resulting in what is referred to as crisis mortality. Here we present a method to standardize the assessment of identifying moments of crises. A modification of the mortality Z‐score methodology which is combined with time series analysis was used to investigate mortality events over the course of nearly two centuries for two populations: Gibraltar and Malta. A benefit of this method is that it situates the yearly death rate within the prevailing mortality pattern, and by doing so allows the researcher to assess the relative impact of that event against the norm for the period under investigation. A series of threshold values were established to develop levels of mortality to distinguish moments of lower mortality than expected, background mortality, a crisis, and a catastrophe. Our findings suggested that within defined periods, a limited number of events constituted moments of excessive mortality in the range of a crisis or higher. These included epidemics (yellow fever and influenza in Gibraltar only, and cholera) and casualties associated with World War II. Episodes of lower than expected mortality were only detected (although not significant) in the 20th century in Malta, and at the micro level, the harvesting effect appears to have occurred following cholera epidemics in both locations and influenza in Gibraltar. Vibration is a common mechanical phenomenon and possesses mechanical energy in ambient environment, which can serve as a sustainable source of power for equipment and devices if it can be effectively collected. In the present work, a novel soft and robust triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) made of a silicone rubber‐spring helical structure with nanocomposite‐based elastomeric electrodes is proposed. Such a spring based TENG (S‐TENG) structure operates in the contact‐separation mode upon vibrating and can effectively convert mechanical energy from ambient excitation into electrical energy. The two fundamental vibration modes resulting from the vertical and horizontal excitation are analyzed theoretically, numerically, and experimentally. Under the resonant states of the S‐TENG, its peak power density is found to be 240 and 45 mW m?2 with an external load of 10 MΩ and an acceleration amplitude of 23 m s?2. Additionally, the dependence of the S‐TENG's output signal on the ambient excitation can be used as a prime self‐powered active vibration sensor that can be applied to monitor the acceleration and frequency of the ambient excitation. Therefore, the newly designed S‐TENG has a great potential in harvesting arbitrary directional vibration energy and serving as a self‐powered vibration sensor.  相似文献

The demand for organ transplantations greatly exceeds the number of organ donors (OD) and it is likely that this discrepancy will continue. There is a continuously growing demand for biostatic allogenic bone transplantation mostly for orthopedic reconstructions. The bone material is predominantly harvested during postmortem examinations in forensic medicine departments. The collected amounts are not enough so the material need to be acquired from other sources. Bone collecting from OD seems to be the optimal solution. Between January 2000 and December 2005, 1,883 out of 2,601 organ donors fulfilled the criteria for bone donation, but only 42 bone harvesting (BH) were performed being only 2.22% of all suitable cases. The main reasons for so few bone procurements were: lack of acceptance of bone procurement by relevant part of donors’ families, insufficient cooperation between tissue banks and transplantation teams, lack of equipment for BH, and no experience in bone procurement. Lhcb6 (CP24) is a monomeric antenna protein of photosystem II, which has been shown to play special roles in photoprotective mechanisms, such as the Non-Photochemical Quenching and reorganization of grana membranes in excess light conditions. In this work we analyzed Lhcb6 in vivo and in vitro: we show this protein, upon activation of the xanthophyll cycle, accumulates zeaxanthin into inner binding sites faster and to a larger extent than any other pigment-protein complex. By comparative analysis of Lhcb6 complexes violaxanthin or zeaxanthin binding, we demonstrate that zeaxanthin not only down-regulates chlorophyll singlet excited states, but also increases the efficiency of chlorophyll triplet quenching, with consequent reduction of singlet oxygen production and significant enhancement of photo-stability. On these bases we propose that Lhcb6, the most recent addition to the Lhcb protein family which evolved concomitantly to the adaptation of photosynthesis to land environment, has a crucial role in zeaxanthin-dependent photoprotection.  相似文献
