As part of a research programme on the food chains in Tjeukemeer, the Daphnia hyalina and Daphnia cucullata populations were studied for three successive years. To analyse the factors regulating the production of these two species, their population parameters (density, size distribution, fecundity) and population dynamics (birth rate, mortality rate) were studied and related to environmental factors. Since Daphnia in Tjeukemeer shows continuous recruitment, the population dynamics model INSTAR was developed and used to integrate field data with laboratory data on development rates and length-weight relationships. The dynamics of the Daphnia species are mainly regulated by temperature and fish predation, the latter affects both birth rate and mortality. Total annual Daphnia production was 3.1–6.9 g org. dry wt M–2, and annual P/B ratio ranged from 25 to 40 for D. cucullata and from 45 to 49 for D. hyalina.  相似文献

1. Amphibians are in decline, and the disease chytridiomycosis, caused by the chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), has been repeatedly implicated throughout the world. This chytrid reproduces via an infectious, motile zoospore stage that remains viable for weeks in the water column. 2. Daphnia is a keystone zooplankton grazer in intact freshwater ecosystems, whose importance to amphibians may be overlooked. As an efficient grazer, Daphnia can suppress chytrid epidemics by consuming zoospores and may therefore play a role in Bd infection dynamics. Daphnia may also have important effects on tadpoles by mediating the properties of pond food webs. We tested the role of Daphnia in outdoor mesocosms containing the tadpoles of red‐legged frogs (Rana aurora) infected with Bd. We also tested the ability of Daphnia to filter Bd from the water column in laboratory microcosms. 3. In the water of microcosms, Daphnia dramatically decreased the number of Bd genomic equivalents detectable using quantitative PCR. Bd genomic equivalents fell below the limit of detection at very high (>1 Daphnia mL?1) Daphnia densities. 4. In mesocosms, Daphnia was critical to the development of tadpoles: in the presence of Daphnia, tadpoles were twofold heavier at metamorphosis than in their absence. Daphnia and Bd interacted to affect the tadpole survival: survival was highest in the presence of Daphnia and in the absence of Bd. We were unable to detect an effect of Daphnia on the transmission of Bd in mesocosms. However, Bd transmission among the tadpoles in mesocosms was unexpectedly low, limiting our power to detect an effect of Daphnia on transmission. 5. Tadpole dissection showed that tadpoles also consumed large numbers of Daphnia. Current models of mesocosm food webs that assume no predation by tadpoles on zooplankton therefore probably overlook important features of both natural and experimental systems.  相似文献

The small cyclopoid copepod Oithona is widely occurring in polar areas; however, knowledge of its biology and ecology is very limited. Here, we investigate the population dynamics, vertical distribution, and reproductive characteristics of Oithona spp. from late winter to summer, in a subarctic fjord of West Greenland. During winter–early spring, the abundance of Oithona spp. was low (1.8 × 103 ind. m?2) and the population was mainly composed of late copepodites and adults, whereas in summer, abundance peaked and younger stages dominated (1.1 × 106 ind. m?2). In general, all stages of Oithona spp. remained in the upper 100 m, with nauplii exhibiting a shallower distribution. Although no general seasonal migration was found, a deeper distribution of the adult females in winter was observed. The mean clutch size of Oithona spp. varied from 16 to 30 eggs per female, peaking in summer. Egg production rates (EPR) were low in winter–early spring (0.13 ± 0.03 eggs female?1 day?1) and reached maximum values in summer (1.6 ± 0.45 eggs female?1 day?1). EPR of Oithona spp. showed a significantly positive relationship with both temperature and protozooplankton biomass, and the development of the population seemed to be appreciably affected by temperature. Oithona spp. remained active throughout the study, stressing the key importance of these small copepods in high-latitude ecosystems, especially in periods when larger copepods are not present in the surface layer.  相似文献

Population dynamics of bacterioplankton in an oligotrophic lake   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
The population ecology of bacterioplankton was studied overa 3 year period in Mirror Lake, an oligotrophic lake in thenortheastern USA. Bacterial population density, biomass, andrates of biomass production in the epilimnion and hypolimnionwere examined for their relationship with several environmentalparameters. Bacterioplankton density fluctuated between 0.5and 7 x l0 bacteria ml–1, with highest values in the anoxichypolimnion. At all depths there was a trend towards a higherdensity of bacteria from spring to midsummer, followed by adecline in late summer to early autumn. Cocci tended to dominatebacterial cell shapes from winter to midsummer, after whichrod-shaped cells became most abundant. Rod-shaped cells contributedthe most to bacterioplankton biomass at all depths and timesof year. The mean annual biovolume of all bacterioplankton was0.12 µ cell–1. The mean annual areal bacterioplanktonbiomass was 11–12 mmol C m–2. The percentage ofbacterial to phytoplankton biomass per volume in summertimewas 27% in the epilimnion and 11% in the hypolimnion. Averageannual and summertime bacterial production estimated using the[3H]thymidine method was similar to previous estimates of bacterialproduction measured in Mirror Lake using other methods. Theaverage ratio of bacterial to net phytoplankton production pervolume was 0.34 in the epilimnion, and between 0.65 and 1 1.depending on depth, in the hypolimnion during summer. Of severalvariables considered in regression analyses, only temperatureexplained >50% of the variance in bacterial production inboth the hypolimnion and epilimnion. Above 14°C, however,bacterial production and growth rate in the epilimnion werenot clearly related to temperature. During the period of midsummerhypolimnetic anoxia, despite colder temperatures in the hypolimnion,bacterial production was up to 10 times greater than in theepilimnion.  相似文献

The population dynamics and production of Daphnia hyaiina^ the dominant cladoceran i n Eglwys Nynydd, a shallow eutrophic reservoir in South Wales, were studied for 2 years against a background of limnological measurements. The appearance and development of successive generations from egg to adult could be followed from changing numbers in arbitrarily defined size classes. Seasonal variations in mean length, mean brood-size and proportion of gravid adults were recorded and mean brood-size was related to changing food and temperature conditions. Egg-development times for D. hyaiina were determined in culture and the population parameters finite birth (S), instantaneous birth (b′), instantaneous population change (r′), instantaneous death (d′) and finite death rates (D) were estimated from field data. Turnover and production estimates were calculated from finite death rates and biomass. The calculated potential rate of increase (b′) was nearly always greater than the observed rate of increase (r′): seasonal changes in death rate (d′) generally parallel changes in birth rate (b′) but remain somewhat out of phase. Population oscillations are probably due t o a delay in the expression of the effects of population density upon birth and death rates. The mean biomass of Daphnia in 1970 was 0-57 mg dry wt/l (0-88 g C/m2) and in 1971 0-32 mg dry wt/l (0.49 g C/m2). Annual production for Daphnia was 11-8 mg dry wt/l (18-2 g C/m2) in 1970 and 8-30 mg dry wt/l (12 8 g C/m2) in 1971. Information available on primary production in the reservoir suggests that the production of Daphnia accounts for less than 2% of gross primary production. However, the pattern of population growth of Daphnia in Eglwys Nynydd almost certainly reflects a food limited system. In summer, blue-green algae may be abundant but serve as a poor food source: throughout the blue-green bloom egg production remains low, at times remaining below 0-5 eggs/adult.  相似文献

The abundances, biomass, and seasonal succession of rotifer and crustacean zooplankton were examined in a man-made, eutrophic lake, Lake Oglethorpe, over a 13 month period. There was an inverse correlation between the abundance of rotifers and crustaceans. Rotifers were most abundant and dominated (>69%) the rotifer-crustacean biomass during summer months (June–September) while crustacean zooplankton dominated during the remainder of the year (>89%). Peak biomasses of crustaceans were observed in the fall (151 µg dry wt l–1 in October) and spring (89.66 µg dry wt l–1 in May). Mean annual biomass levels were 46.99 µg dry wt l–1 for crustaceans and 19.26 µg dry wt l–1 for rotifers. Trichocerca rousseleti, Polyarthra sp., Keratella cochlearis and Kellicottia bostoniensis were the most abundant rotifers in the lake. Diaptomus siciloides and Daphnia parvula were the most abundant crustaceans. Lake Oglethorpe is distinct in having an unusually high abundance of rotifers (range 217–7980 l–1). Vertical distributions of zooplankton were studied in relation to profiles of temperature, oxygen and chlorophyll a in Roi Lake, a small meromictic lake in central Alberta. Zooplankton were distributed fairly evenly through the oxygenated part of the water column in early summer, but a gradual descent of several species became evident in June. The vertical distribution of chlorophyll was dominated by a huge peak at the 8- to 9-m-deep chemocline. the location of a plate of photosynthetic sulfur bacteria. Ambient concentration of chlorophyll was a poor predictor of the numbers of zooplankton and the fecundity of Daphnia pulicaria at different depths, and per capita birth rates of Daphnia were usually highest in the surface waters. The reproductively disadvantageous restriction of daphnids to deep water by late summer and their catastrophic decline in the face of high ambient concentrations of chlorophyll suggest that factors other than temperature and food supply are important in influencing the dynamics and distribution of zooplankton in this lake.  相似文献

2006年4月-2007年3月对清江流域二级河流叹气沟河大型底栖动物群落中摇蚊优势种进行了为期1周年的调查。结果表明:主要优势摇蚊斑特突摇蚊(Thienemanimyia lentiginosa)、波特真开氏摇蚊(Eukiefferiella potthasti)和拟长跗摇蚊(Paratanytarsus panhenogeneticu)的生活史均为1年2代;拟长跗摇蚊、斑特突摇蚊的种群密度6月、9月和翌年3月出现峰值,波特真开氏摇蚊则在5月和翌年1月出现峰值;采用龄期频率法(instar-fre-quency method)测算的周年生产量(湿质量)和生产量(P)/生物量(B)分别为斑特突摇蚊17.44g·m^-2、3.4,波特真开氏摇蚊1.66g·m^-2、2.3,拟长跗摇蚊3.3g·m^-2、6.4;3种摇蚊的生产量在时间动态上重叠程度较大,主要发生在春季;通过对3种摇蚊的前肠内含物分析,测算了各类食物的比例及其对生产量的贡献率,结果表明,无形态碎屑为主要食物类型,占前肠内含物的73.27%-86.89%,而斑特突摇蚊生产量则主要来源于动物性食物的贡献率(51.64%)。  相似文献

Calcium was the most important of 27 environmental components affecting density for a 50 week period. Simultaneous stepwise regression accounted for more variability in total number/1 and in the number of ovigerous females/1 than did any of the lag analyses; 1-week lag accounted for the greatest amount of variability in clutch size. Density of Aeromonas spp. at one site in the Buffalo River and at four sites on its upstream tributaries was followed from June 1992–June 1993. Membrane filtration counts of Aeromonas during the summer ranged between 18 and 4000 ml−1, which were one to two logs higher than faecal coliform and faecal streptococci densities. Aeromonas spp. in the Buffalo River, and faecal coliforms, faecal streptococci, and the heterotrophic plate count throughout the watershed, increased by approximately one log during summer rainstorms. However, Aeromonas spp. increased only by a factor of two during rainstorms at the upstream sites. Aeromonas spp. showed a strong positive correlation with both indicator bacteria and total suspended solids at the upstream sites during the summer but not the winter. Correlations between Aeromonas and indicator bacteria remained strong in the Buffalo River during the winter, signifying that different conditions exist in the Buffalo River and its upstream tributaries. The strong correlation between Aeromonas spp. and indicator bacteria in the Buffalo River suggest that, in the absence of media capable of the quantitative recovery of potentially pathogenic aeromonads, standard faecal coliform analyses may adequately assess public health risks from Aeromonas spp. in an urban river used for recreational purposes.  相似文献

A population dynamics analysis for planktonic diatoms is presented that allows estimates of the net rate of increase (k), the death rate (δ), the sedimentation rate (σ) and, in absence of grazing, the growth rate (μ). It requires counts of live and dead cells suspended in the euphotic part of the water column and accumulated in sedimentation traps. The application of the model is demonstrated for the three dominant summe diatom species in Lake Constance. Asterionella formosa Hass, Fragilaria crotonensis Kitton and Stephanodiscus binderanus Krieger. Only during the first two weeks of the summer bloom of diatoms the loss rates were unimportant in comparison to the growth rates. Thereafter diatom population dynamics was strongly influenced by sedimentation and mortality, which sometimes led to a decrease in population density even when cell division continued at high rates. There were two periods of extraordinarily high death rates, which were associated in the case of A. formosa with silicon depletion and in the case of F crotensis with fungal parasitism.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in vertical distribution of Daphnia galeata and other zooplankters were monitored in lake Lombola (69° 07′ N). Depth-habitat use, availability of edible algae and zooplankton densities were recorded to examine seasonal changes in intensity of competition between Daphnia and the other herbivores in the lake. Early in July, the exephippial generation of Daphnia aggregated near the surface, independently of body-size. In late July, when fish planktivory was expected to increase, the daphnids moved down during the day. In August, as intraspecific competition for food intensified, small and large Daphnia partitioned the water column, with larger individuals staying deeper. In September, Daphnia became dominated by large individuals, edible phytoplankton reached the seasonal minimum, and the vertical distribution of Daphnia gradually stretched out towards the surface. The observations on food availability and zooplankton densities suggest that interspecific competition intensified by the end of July. Species and stages that were most exposed to exploitative and interference competition by Daphnia were those staying deeper, because their vertical distribution overlapped more with the larger, competitively superior daphnids. These susceptible competitors included Keratella cochlearis and Synchaeta, among the rotifers, and nauplii and early copepodite stages of Cyclops scutifer. Depth-habitat use is discussed in relation to copepod development, zooplankton dynamics and predator-mediated coexistence.  相似文献

There is a long-standing debate in ecology concerning the relative importance of competition and predation in determining community structure. Recently, a novel twist has been added with the growing recognition that potentially competing species are often engaged in predator-prey interactions. This blend of competition and predation is called intraguild predation (IGP). The study of IGP will lead to a reconsideration of many classical topics, such as niche shifts, species exclusion and cascading interactions in food webs. Theoretical models suggest that a variety of alternative stable states are likely in IGP systems, and that intermediate predators should tend to be superior in exploitative competition. Many field studies support these expectations. IGP is also important in applied ecological problems, such as the conservation of endangered species and fisheries management.  相似文献

Various species of Daphnia usually play a key role in the food web of temperate freshwater systems. There is much evidence to show that climate change may influence Daphnia population dynamics, consequently altering both predator–prey interactions and the efficiency of algal biomass control in these ecosystems. This review will analyse and discuss the current knowledge on Daphnia responses to climate warming based on an analysis of selected papers. The presented results indicate that warming may have important direct and indirect effects on Daphnia biology and ecology via its influence on their life-history processes (metabolism, growth, reproduction) and the properties of their habitats. The plasticity of daphnids in terms of adaptive responses is generally high and includes phenotypic adaptations and changes in genotypes, although it also depends upon the strength of selection and the available genetic variation. The seasonal timing and magnitude of temperature increases are important for seasonal biomass fluctuations of Daphnia and similarly influence the potential synchrony of daphnids and phytoplankton succession (the timing hypothesis). In light of the most recent studies on this topic, even a minor warming during short but critical seasonal periods can cause factors that disturb Daphnia population dynamics to coincide, which may destabilize lake food webs by decoupling trophic interactions. Both winter and spring are important critical periods for determining future seasonal fluxes of Daphnia spp. and, consequently, the time of the clear-water phase and the occurrence and duration of Daphnia midsummer decline. Winter conditions may also affect the impact of fish predation on daphnids during summer months. However, the effects of global warming on Daphnia population dynamics and on ecosystem functioning are often difficult to predict due to their complexity and the presence of both antagonistic and synergistic drivers. Thus, the diverse responses of daphnids to climate anomalies depend on both biotic (predator abundance and seasonal phytoplankton succession) and abiotic factors (e.g. hydrodynamics, intensity and duration of thermal stratification, trophic state or geomorphology) of lakes, which are directly influenced by weather changes. The analysis and quantification of such complex interactions require the involvement of different kinds of specialists and the development of accurate research approaches, such as molecular genetic methods or mathematical modelling.  相似文献

1. Stocking of lakes with rainbow trout is a common practice that presents a potential conflict for lake managers who must balance the interests of anglers with those concerned that zooplanktivory by trout may trigger a trophic cascade and result in decreased water clarity. 2. This study examined how the timing of trout stocking (autumn versus spring) in a Minnesota (U.S.A.) lake affected (i) the population dynamics of their zooplankton food supply (Daphnia pulicaria), (ii) phytoplankton biomass and water clarity and (iii) trout survival. Sizes of both Daphnia and trout populations were estimated acoustically with high‐frequency (192 kHz) sonar. 3. Daphnia were nearly eliminated from the lake during winters after trout were stocked in autumn. In both of these years (1996 and 1997), the Daphnia population was small in the spring, and grew during the summer and into the autumn as the trout population diminished. 4. The lake was then stocked in spring for 2 years (1998 and 1999). This fisheries manipulation alleviated predation over the winter, but increased predation on D. pulicaria during the spring, summer and autumn. However, the high mortality caused by the spring‐stocked trout was offset by even higher rates of reproduction by the relatively large populations of fecund Daphnia that survived the winter in 1998 and 1999. 5. Grazing by these dense populations of Daphnia produced clear‐water phases during May and June that were inhibited in autumn stocking years. In addition, the large Daphnia populations present during the spring and early summer of 1998 and 1999 provided abundant forage for trout. 6. This fisheries manipulation achieved seemingly mutually exclusive management objectives: a robust planktivorous sport fishery, and clear water for other forms of recreation.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The population densities, dynamics and production of Daphnia hyalina and Bosmina longirostris were studied over a 2-year period in a shallow eutrophic reservoir in eastern England. The diet of the two species was assessed and their ecology was compared in relation to environmental factors. 2. Daphnia hyalina was characterized by small overall body size, probably due to heavy size-selective predation by fish. The first generation produced from the overwintering population appeared in April and Depopulation peaked in late spring and early summer. Adult survival was poor. Peak egg production varied between years, while mean brood size fell in summer probably due to food limitation during the cyanobacterial bloom. At this time selection for individual algal species was high and many guts were empty. Reproductive ratios were inversely related to population density. Bosmina longirostris exhibited a similar annual cycle. 3. Patterns of production were very different in the 2 years in D. hyalina. In 1981 production was high from August to early October, but in 1982 the peak was in spring. Annual production was 32.4 g C m?2 in 1981 and 13.3 g C m?2 in 1982. In 1981 B. longirostris production peaked in spring and late summer; in 1982 there was a high production in summer only. Annual production was 3.2 g C m?2 in 1981 and 2.2 g Cm?2 in 1982. 4. The number of adult D. hyalina was highly correlated with water temperature and total phytoplankton biomass, but these were negatively correlated with the number of eggs, mean brood size and instantaneous birth rate. In contrast, clutch size of B. longirostris was positively correlated with water temperature while birth rate was positively correlated with both temperature and phytoplankton biomass. The biomass of both species was positively related to total phytoplankton biomass, but neither relationship explained much of the variation in zooplankton biomass. 5. The significance of the observations on plankton in terms of managing the water quality in eutrophic reservoirs is discussed.  相似文献
