Thermal responses to preoptic heating and ambient temperature in unrestrained rabbits. The preoptic area of two male and two female New Zealand White rabbits was heated by a water perfused thermode, while the animals were exposed to ambient temperatures of −8, 0, 10 and 20°C. Postural changes for heat dissipation were observed immediately following the onset of heating. Metabolism, heart rate, and rectal temperature decreased in response to preoptic heating, while breathing rate and ear pinnae temperature increased. A regular sequence of thermoregulatory responses was observed following the onset of heating. This sequence was determined by the set point for each thermoregulatory response. In 25% of the experiments, a reversal of order within the sequence was observed, implying a relative shift in set point for responses. These changes in sequence may depend on the psychological state of the animal. This leads us to hypothesize a non-temperature sensitive integrative process in the CNS which modifies thermoregulatory responses.  相似文献

Excitatory and inhibitory responses of sympathetic discharge were recorded in single renal postganglionic neurons of rabbits anaesthetized with urethane and chloralose. The animals were vagotomized and had transected aortic nerves. Responses were elicited by single volleys in the aortic C-fibres. Excitatory responses consisted in short-lasting increase in the rate of ongoing sympathetic discharge and were followed by inhibitory responses. Excitatory effects together with inhibitory responses were seen in 68% of units (19/28). Only excitatory effects appeared in 2 neurons (7.1%) and only inhibitory effects in 7 neurons (25%). In renal neurons exhibiting both effects, the excitatory responses appeared after latency of 172 +/- 8 ms (x +/- S.D.) and had duration of 64 +/- 11 ms. Inhibitory effects had latency o f 257 +/- 10 ms and their duration amounted to 265 +/- 22 ms. In more than half of recordings the excitatory responses were separated from the inhibitory effects by discharge lasting 33 +/- 4 ms. Significant correlations between latencies of excitatory and inhibitory responses and between duration of excitatory and latency of inhibitory responses suggest interaction between both effects. Increase in the number of afferent volleys (1 through 5) evoked relatively small changes in duration of the excitatory effect indicating that temporal facilitation is of minor importance in generating this response. Temporal facilitation was found to play an important role in determining duration of the inhibitory response. Comparison of effects of unilateral and bilateral stimulation of the aortic C-fibres showed larger occlusion of durations of the excitatory than inhibitory responses.  相似文献

The effects of elevated ambient temperature on the response to exogenous gonadotropins were evaluated in female New Zealand White rabbits exposed to 33+/-1 degrees C (mean +/- SE) and 10-30% relative humidity (8 h/day) during a 5-day period. Does were treated with pFSH (0.3 mg/0.3 ml Standard Armour) twice daily during three consecutive days with a minimum interval of 8 h between injections. Six hours after the last FSH injection all does were removed from the experimental chamber, given hCG (25 IU/kg) and paired overnight. Nineteen hours after pairing, embryos were flushed from the reproductive tracts, evaluated, and subjected to in vitro culture during a 96-h period. The ovulatory responses to exogenous gonadotropins and fertilization rates did not differ significantly under conditions of elevated ambient temperature, whereas fewer blastocysts and increased number of degenerate embryos were observed after culture. We conclude that although hyperthermia was induced during exposure to elevated ambient temperature, it did not alter the ovulatory responses to gonadotropin treatment and plasma concentrations of FSH and LH compared with does in a thermoneutral environment. Exposure of donor rabbits to elevated ambient temperature before mating, however, increased embryonic degeneration.  相似文献

Short muscle fibers (less than 1.5 mm) from the m. lumbricalis IV digiti of Rana pipiens were voltage-clamped at -100 mV with a two-microelectrode technique, in normal Ringer's solution containing 10(-6) g/ml tetrodotoxin. The activation curve relating peak tension to membrane potential could be shifted toward more negative or less negative potential values by hyperpolarizing or depolarizing the fiber membrane to -130, -120, or -70 mV, respectively, which indicates that contractile threshold depends on the fiber membrane potential. Long (greater than 5 s) depolarizing (90 mV) pulses induce prolonged contractile responses showing a plateau and a rapid relaxation phase similar to K contractures. Conditioning hyperpolarizations prolong the time course of these responses, while conditioning depolarizations shorten it. The shortening of the response time course, which results in a decrease of the area under the response, is dependent on the amplitude and duration of the conditioning depolarization. Depending on the magnitude and duration, a conditioning depolarization may also reduce peak tension. When the area under the response is reduced by 50%, the level of membrane potential also affects the repriming rate. During repriming, peak tension is restored before the contracture area. Thus, when peak tension is reprimed to 80%, the area is reprimed by 50% of its normal value. Repriming has a marked temperature dependency with a Q10 higher than 4. These results are compatible with the idea that an inactivation process, voltage and time dependent, regulates the release of calcium from the sarcoplasmic reticulum during these responses.  相似文献

This paper describes the auditory neurophysiology of the mesencephalon of P. isidori, a soundproducing mormyrid fish. Mormyrids have a specialized pressure-sensitive auditory periphery, and anatomical studies indicate that acoustic information is relayed to the mesencephalic nucleus MD. Fish were stimulated with tone bursts and clicks, and responses of MD neurons were recorded extracellularly. Auditory neurons had best frequencies (BF) and best sensitivities (BS) that fell within the range of frequencies and levels of the natural communication sounds of these fish. BSs were in the range of 0 to — 35 dB (re. 1.0 dyne/cm2). Many of the neurons were tuned (Q10 dB: 2–6), and had BFs in the range of 100–300 Hz where the animal's sounds have their peak energy. A range of different physiological cell types were encountered, including phasic, sustained, and complex neurons. Some of the sustained neurons showed strong phase-locking to tones. Many neurons exhibited non-monotonic rate-level functions. Frequencies flanking the BF often caused a reduction in spontaneous activity suggesting inhibition. Many neurons showed excellent representation of click-trains, and some showed a temporal representation of inter-click-intervals with errors less than 1 ms.Abbreviations BF best frequency - BS best sensitivity - ELa anterior exterolateral toral nucleus - ELp posterior exterolateral toral nucleus - EOCD electric organ command discharge - FFT fast Fourier transform - HRP horseradish peroxidase - ICI inter-clickinterval - MD mediodorsal toral nucleus (=auditory nucleus) - OR onset response rate - PSTH peri-stimulus-time-histogram - R synchronization coefficient - RA response area - SS steady state response rate  相似文献

Experiments were performed on 37 urethane-anesthetized rabbits. The aortic nerves, carotid sinus nerves and vagus nerves were cut, MAP and renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA) were recorded. The conditional stimulation CSc (0.5 ms, 10 Hz, 4-6V, 5 min) was used to mimic the information of baroreflex non-medullated afferent fibers responding to acute increase of BP. Test stimulation TSa (0.02 ms, 0-80 Hz/30 s, 4-6V) and TSc (0.5 ms, 0-20 Hz/30s, 4-6V) was used to examine the responses of baroreflex A- and C-fibers. After CSc at 1 min the reflex MAP and RSNA of TSc was attenuated at 45.5% (P less than 0.01) and 10.6% (P less than 0.05), the MAP response of TSa was attenuated at 32.1% (P less than 0.05), but the RSNA response was not. From the further investigation it is concluded that the characteristics of central acute resetting are dependent on the components of baroreflex afferent fibers. The reflex responses are attenuated mainly by correspondent afferent components.  相似文献

The timing of spiking activity across neurons is a fundamental aspect of the neural population code. Individual neurons in the retina, thalamus, and cortex can have very precise and repeatable responses but exhibit degraded temporal precision in response to suboptimal stimuli. To investigate the functional implications for neural populations in natural conditions, we recorded in vivo the simultaneous responses, to movies of natural scenes, of multiple thalamic neurons likely converging to a common neuronal target in primary visual cortex. We show that the response of individual neurons is less precise at lower contrast, but that spike timing precision across neurons is relatively insensitive to global changes in visual contrast. Overall, spike timing precision within and across cells is on the order of 10 ms. Since closely timed spikes are more efficient in inducing a spike in downstream cortical neurons, and since fine temporal precision is necessary to represent the more slowly varying natural environment, we argue that preserving relative spike timing at a ~10-ms resolution is a crucial property of the neural code entering cortex.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the systemic hemodynamic mechanism(s) underlying the pressor response to nonexertional heat stress in the unrestrained conscious rat. After a 60-min control period [ambient temperature (Ta) 24 degrees C], male Sprague-Dawley rats (260-340 g) were exposed to a Ta of 42 degrees C until a colonic temperature (Tc) of 41 degrees C was attained. As Tc rose from control levels (38.1 +/- 0.1 degrees C) to 41 degrees C, mean arterial blood pressure (carotid artery catheter, n = 33) increased from 124 +/- 2 to 151 +/- 2 mmHg (P less than 0.05). During this period, heart rate increased (395 +/- 5 to 430 +/- 6 beats/min, P less than 0.05) and stroke volume remained unchanged. As a result, ascending aorta blood flow velocity (Doppler flow probe, n = 8), used as an index of cardiac output, did not change from control levels during heating, but there was a progressive Tc-dependent increase in systemic vascular resistance (+30% at end heating, P less than 0.05). This systemic vasoconstrictor response was associated with decreases in blood flow (-31 +/- 9 and -21 +/- 5%) and increases in vascular resistance (94 +/- 16 and 53 +/- 8%; all P less than 0.05) in the superior mesenteric and renal arteries (n = 8 each) and increases in plasma norepinephrine (303 +/- 37 to 1,237 +/- 262 pg/ml) and epinephrine (148 +/- 28 to 708 +/- 145 pg/ml) concentrations (n = 12, P less than 0.05).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The consequences of variations in environmental temperature on innate immune responses in birds are by and large not known. We investigated the influence of ambient temperature on the febrile response in female Pekin ducks (Anas platyrhynchos). Ducks, implanted with temperature data loggers to measure body temperature, were injected with lipopolysaccharide (100 μg kg−1) to evoke febrile responses and kept at ambient temperatures higher, within, and lower than their thermoneutral zone (n=10), and in conditions that simulated one day of a heat wave (n=6). Compared to the febrile response at thermoneutrality, at low temperatures, febrile responses were significantly attenuated; fevers reached lower magnitudes (from basal body temperature of 41.2±0.3 °C to a peak of 42.0±0.3 °C). In contrast, at high ambient temperatures, ducks rapidly developed significantly enhanced fevers, which reached markedly higher febrile peaks (from basal body temperature of 41.6 °C to a peak of 44.0 °C in a simulated heat wave when ambient temperature reached 40 °C). These results indicate that ambient temperature affects the febrile response in female Pekin ducks. Our findings reveal a key difference in febrile mediation between ducks and mammals, and have implications for avian survival because high environmental temperatures during febrile mediation could lead to febrile responses becoming physiologically deleterious.  相似文献

The cerebellar fastigial nuclei (FN) assist in regulating compensatory responses to large blood pressure changes and show structural injury and functional impairment to cardiovascular challenges in syndromes with sleep-disordered breathing. The patterned time course of FN responses to elevation or lowering of blood pressure and location of responsive regions within the nuclei are unclear. We evaluated FN neural activity in six anesthetized rats using optical imaging procedures during elevation and lowering of arterial pressure by phenylephrine and nitroprusside, respectively. Hypertension diminished optical correlates of FN neural activity, while measures of activity increased to hypotension, with peak neural responses occurring 5-10 s later than peak blood pressure changes. Blood pressure responses were followed by heart rate changes, and peak respiratory rates developed even later, in close temporal proximity to FN activity patterns. Although overall topographical response trends were similar, regional patterns of altered neural activity appeared to both hypertension and hypotension. The extent of neural change was greater during recovery from hypertension than for hypotension at high-dose levels. Blood pressure levels saturated with increasing phenylephrine doses, while FN activity continued to decline. No saturation appeared in heart or respiratory rate trends. The findings suggest that the FN compensate for large blood pressure changes by sympathoexcitatory and inhibitory processes, which accompany late-developing somatic or respiratory adjustments.  相似文献

We have examined the interaction of photoperiod and temperature in regulating the parr-smolt transformation and its endocrine control. Atlantic salmon juveniles were reared at a constant temperature of 10 degrees C or ambient temperature (2 degrees C from January to April followed by seasonal increase) under simulated natural day length. At 10 degrees C, an increase in day length [16 h of light and 8 h of darkness (LD 16:8)] in February accelerated increases in gill Na(+)-K(+)-ATPase activity, whereas fish at ambient temperature did not respond to increased day length. Increases in gill Na(+)-K(+)-ATPase activity under both photoperiods occurred later at ambient temperature than at 10 degrees C. Plasma growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth factor, and thyroxine increased within 7 days of increased day length at 10 degrees C and remained elevated for 5-9 wk; the same photoperiod treatment at 2 degrees C resulted in much smaller increases of shorter duration. Plasma cortisol increased transiently 3 and 5 wk after LD 16:8 at 10 degrees C and ambient temperature, respectively. Plasma thyroxine was consistently higher at ambient temperature than at 10 degrees C. Plasma triiodothyronine was initially higher at 10 degrees C than at ambient temperature, and there was no response to LD 16:8 under either temperature regimen. There was a strong correlation between gill Na(+)-K(+)-ATPase activity and plasma GH; correlations were weaker with other hormones. The results provide evidence that low temperature limits the physiological response to increased day length and that GH, insulin-like growth factor I, cortisol, and thyroid hormones mediate the environmental control of the parr-smolt transformation.  相似文献

An in vitro preparation of the guinea-pig cornea was used to study the effects of changing temperature on nerve terminal impulses recorded extracellularly from cold-sensitive receptors. At a stable holding temperature (31-32.5 degrees C), cold receptors had an ongoing periodic discharge of nerve terminal impulses. This activity decreased or ceased with heating and increased with cooling. Reducing the rate of temperature change reduced the respective effects of heating and cooling on nerve terminal impulse frequency. In addition to changes in the frequency of activity, nerve terminal impulse shape also changed with heating and cooling. At the same ambient temperature, nerve terminal impulses were larger in amplitude and faster in time course during heating than those recorded during cooling. The magnitude of these effects of heating and cooling on nerve terminal impulse shape was reduced if the rate of temperature change was slowed. At 29, 31.5, and 35 degrees C, a train of 50 electrical stimuli delivered to the ciliary nerves at 10-40 Hz produced a progressive increase in the amplitude of successive nerve terminal impulses evoked during the train. Therefore, it is unlikely that the reduction in nerve terminal impulse amplitude observed during cooling is due to the activity-dependent changes in the nerve terminal produced by the concomitant increase in impulse frequency. Instead, the differences in nerve terminal impulse shape observed at the same ambient temperature during heating and cooling may reflect changes in the membrane potential of the nerve terminal associated with thermal transduction.  相似文献

The opioid peptide, beta-endorphin (beta-E), will promote changes in body temperature when injected into the brain. It is possible that beta-E alters body temperature by affecting the activity of thermoregulatory neurons in the preoptic anterior hypothalamus (POAH). Single unit activity in the POAH was recorded in unanesthetized rabbits while radiant heat was applied to the dorsal skin. Beta-E was then microinjected into the POAH, and the peripheral heating was repeated. Seventy-seven percent of the POAH neurons were responsive to skin heating. Beta-E and equal excitatory and inhibitory effects on warm-excited and warm-inhibited neurons. Four of six warm-excited neurons were converted to warm-inhibited or unresponsive following beta-E injection. Six out of ten warm-inhibited neurons were converted to warm-excited or unresponsive by beta-E. Beta-E-induced shifts in thermal excitability of POAH neurons may be responsible for the ability of POAH injections of beta-E to elevate body temperature in the rabbit.  相似文献

During mating, males and females of N. viridula (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) produce sex- and species-specific calling and courtship substrate-borne vibratory signals, grouped into songs. Recognition and localization of these signals are fundamental for successful mating. The recognition is mainly based on the temporal pattern, i.e. the amplitude modulation, while the frequency spectrum of the signals usually only plays a minor role. We examined the temporal selectivity for vibratory signals in four types of ascending vibratory interneurons in N. viridula. Using intracellular recording and labelling technique, we analyzed the neurons' responses to 30 pulse duration/interval duration (PD/ID) combinations. Two response arrays were created for each neuron type, showing the intensity of the responses either as time-averaged spike counts or as peak instantaneous spike rates. The mean spike rate response arrays showed preference of the neurons for short PDs (below 600 ms) and no selectivity towards interval duration; while the peak spike rate response arrays exhibited either short PD/long ID selectivity or no selectivity at all. The long PD/short ID combinations elicited the weakest responses in all neurons tested. No response arrays showed the receiver preference for either constant period or duty cycle. The vibratory song pattern selectivity matched the PD of N. viridula male vibratory signals, thus pointing to temporal filtering for the conspecific vibratory signals already at level of the ascending interneurons. In some neurons the responses elicited by the vibratory stimuli were followed by distinct, regular oscillations of the membrane potential. The distance between the oscillation peaks matched the temporal structure of the male calling song, indicating a possible resonance based mechanism for signal recognition.  相似文献

Formation of trace rhythm recruitment (an analogue of conditioned time reflex) was studies in CA3 hippocampal neurons of alert young (less than one year), old (54-65 months), and very old rabbits after a prolonged (10-20 min) electro-cutaneous stimulation of a forelimb with the frequency of 0.5-1 Hz. Comparative analysis of neuronal spike activity in young and old rabbits showed that in the late ontogeny the number of spontaneously active neurons was significantly decreased, the proportion of slowly firing neurons increased, the interspike intervals and intervals between spike groups became longer, the number of spikes in a group reduced. The ability of hippocampal neurons to acquire and reproduce the rhythm of the previous stimulation declined with age. No appropriate rhythms were found in neurons of very old animals. A nonspecific increase in neuronal baseline activity was observed in old rabbits after the stimulation. Deterioration of morphological structures of hippocampal neurons and glial cells may explain the impairment of mnestic processes in late ontogeny.  相似文献

Dendritic shaft (Zd) and spine (Zsp) input impedances were computed numerically for sites on hippocampal neurons, using a segmental format of cable calculations. The Zsp values for a typical spine appended onto a dendritic shaft averaged less than 2% higher than the Zd values for the adjacent dendritic shaft. Spine synaptic inputs were simulated by a brief conductance transient, which possessed a time integral of 12 X 10(-10)S X ms. This input resulted in an average peak spine response of 20 mV for both dentate granule neurons and CA1 pyramidal cells. The average spine transient was attenuated less than 2% in conduction across the spine neck, considering peak voltage, waveform parameters, and charge transfer. The spine conductance transient resulted in an average somatic response of 100 microV in the dentate granule neurons, because of passive electrotonic propagation. The same input transient was also applied to proximal and distal sites on CA1 pyramidal cells. The predicted responses at the soma demonstrated a clear difference between the proximal and distal inputs, in terms of both peak voltage and waveform parameters. Thus, the main determinant of the passive propagation of transient electrical signals in these neurons appears to be dendritic branching rather than signal attenuation through the spine neck.  相似文献

Activities of individual hippocampal (CA1 area) and neocortical parietal-temporal neurons were compared in active and passive rabbits in negative emotional situations during emotionally significant stimuli by plotting histograms of autocorrelations. As compared to passive animals, in active rabbits, the mean firing rate of hippocampal neurons was higher, bursting and periodic oscillations of discharges occurred more frequently. Oscillation periods in the theta 1 band (6.0-9.0 Hz) appeared more frequently (in the baseline state and active exploratory or defensive reactions), whereas those in the theta 2 band (4.0-5.9 Nz), on the contrary, were infrequently observed (during freezing). The greatest changes in activity ofhippocampal neurons were observed during active locomotor responses of active rabbits. Intergroup differences in neocortical neuronal activities were less pronounced than in hippocampus. The results indicate that individual typological features in behaviour of animals appear in negative emotional situations and are reflected in activity of activity ofhippocampal (area CA1) and to lesser extent parietal-temporal neocortical neurons. The results suggest different activation levels of the septohippocampal system of active and passive rabbits and possible differences in the afferent input to the CA1 field.  相似文献

Responses of neurons in association area 5 during defensive conditioning to acoustic stimulation were studied in chronic experiments on cats. As a rule the neurons responded by excitation to presentation of conditioned and unconditioned stimuli. During the conditioned reflex unit responses usually appeared in the first 50 msec after the beginning of acoustic stimulation, i.e., they were connected with the action of the conditioned stimulus and not with manifestations of conditioned-reflex motion. The most significant changes in responses of cortical association units were observed in the initial period of conditioning. During stabilization of the conditioned reflex, responses of some neurons became stabilized, whereas in other neurons the spontaneous activity and intensity of responses increased, and in a third group the response to one of the stimuli disappeared. This last result indicates a switch during conditioning from polysensory unit responses to monosensory specialized responses. Extinctive inhibition was found to consist of a gradual decrease in the level of the spike discharge and its approximation to spontaneous activity, i.e., to be passive in character.A. A. 1. Ampullary electroreceptors in elasmobranchs are innervated by fibers of the ALLN, which projects to the dorsal octavolateralis nucleus (DON). The purpose of this study is to examine the response characteristics of ALLN fibers and DON neurons to weak D.C. and sinusoidal electric field stimuli presented as local dipole fields. 2. ALLN fibers respond to presentation of D.C. fields with a phasic burst, followed by a more slowly adapting period of firing. Ascending efferent neurons (AENs) in the DON respond to stimuli with a similar initial burst, which adapts more quickly. 3. Type 1, 2, and 3 neurons are possible local interneurons or commissural DON neurons. Type 1 neurons demonstrate response properties similar to those of AENs. Type 2 cells demonstrated slowly adapting responses to excitatory stimuli, the duration of the response increased with the amplitude of the stimulus. Type 3 neurons demonstrated an increased rate of firing, but the response lacked any specific temporal characteristics. 4. ALLN fibers typically have receptive fields consisting of a single ampulla. The receptive field sizes of DON neurons exhibited varying degrees of convergence for different cell types. 5. Responses of ALLN fibers and DON neurons to weak sinusoidal stimuli demonstrated very similar frequency response characteristics for all cell types. The peak sensitivity of electrosensory neurons was between 5-10 Hz.  相似文献

Drifting gratings can modulate the activity of visual neurons at the temporal frequency of the stimulus. In order to characterize the temporal frequency modulation in the cat’s ascending tectofugal visual system, we recorded the activity of single neurons in the superior colliculus, the suprageniculate nucleus, and the anterior ectosylvian cortex during visual stimulation with drifting sine-wave gratings. In response to such stimuli, neurons in each structure showed an increase in firing rate and/or oscillatory modulated firing at the temporal frequency of the stimulus (phase sensitivity). To obtain a more complete characterization of the neural responses in spatiotemporal frequency domain, we analyzed the mean firing rate and the strength of the oscillatory modulations measured by the standardized Fourier component of the response at the temporal frequency of the stimulus. We show that the spatiotemporal stimulus parameters that elicit maximal oscillations often differ from those that elicit a maximal discharge rate. Furthermore, the temporal modulation and discharge-rate spectral receptive fields often do not overlap, suggesting that the detection range for visual stimuli provided jointly by modulated and unmodulated response components is larger than the range provided by a one response component.  相似文献
