Palynological and charcoal fragment analyses of Guanabara Bay sediments, as well as radiocarbon dating, were carried out on one 220 cm long sedimentary core collected from the northeast sector of the bay, near the São Gonçalo coast. This study aims at recognising and explaining the environmental history of this region during the mid-Holocene, and to identify the anthropogenic influences on it. The palynological data indicate the predominance of ombrophilous forest vegetation in the Guanabara Bay Hydrographic Basin at c. 6500 calendar years bp. During this period (pollen zone 1), the concentrations of pollen grains and spores may still have been controlled by the Holocene Maximum Transgressive Event. After a phase of low concentrations of palynomorphs, there was a considerable increase in the accumulation patterns of pollen and spore grains (pollen zone 2). This increase can probably be related to the retreat of the sea level event after the Holocene Maximum Transgressive Event. The 75 cm of the core top (pollen zone 3) provide clear evidence of human influence in the area, which is inferred from the significant reduction in ombrophilous forest pollen grains, the significant increase in herbaceous pollen grains, the presence of exotic pollen types (Eucalyptus and Pinus), and high concentration of carbonaceous particles.  相似文献

Synopsis Ontogenetic dietary shifts are well studied in fishes. However, these shifts are rarely correlated with habitat and morphology. This study investigates: (1) ontogenetic dietary changes in mullet; and if dietary shifts do occur (2) whether they are correlated with feeding location, feeding behavior and/or feeding morphology. Stomach contents from eight size classes, each with 25 individuals, were analyzed using a gravimetric sieve fractionation procedure, Czechanowski's Quantitative Index and cluster analysis. Core samples (5 mm deep) were also analyzed in the same manner. Morphological characters were measured to detect differences among the size classes. Cluster analysis showed three distinct trophic units for Mugil cephalus in Cross Bayou: (1) 20.0 mm standard length — 30.0 mm SL; (2) 30.0 mm SL — 40.0 mm SL; and (3) 40.0 mm SL — > 100 mm SL. Comparison of the gut contents to the sediment contents for each size class showed an increase in similarity as the fish grew. Mullet gut contents from fish 20–25 mm SL were only 45% similar based on the weights of the prey items to the sediment subsample prey items, while stomach contents from fish > 100 mm SL were 84% similar to the sediment subsample contents. Gill raker length and interraker spacing of four gill arches were allometric with respect to standard length. Prey particle size within size classes appeared to be more correlated with feeding behavior than gill interraker spacing because smaller particles than predicted by the interraker spacing were ingested. It is suggested that smaller fish may be browsing more selectively than larger fish which graze.  相似文献

In the present study, the effect of thermal stress on the variability and fluctuating asymmetry (FA) in different morphological traits, viz., thorax length (TL), sternopleural bristle number (SBN), wing length (WL), wing-to-thorax (W/T) ratio, sex comb tooth number (SCTN) and ovariole number (ON), was investigated in 10 isofemale lines of Drosophila ananassae. The phenotypic and genetic variability is higher in the flies reared at low (20 °C) and at high (30 °C) temperatures as compared to that of standard (25 °C) temperature. Further, the levels of FA of measured traits differed significantly among the three temperature regimes except SBN and SCTN in males and SBN and W/T ratio in females. Moreover, the magnitude of positional fluctuating asymmetry is similar in males reared at three different developmental temperatures for SBN and SCTN but it varies significantly for SBN in females. However, when FA across all the traits was combined into a composite index (CFA), significant differences were found for both temperature regimes and sexes. Males showed higher CFA at 30 °C whereas in females it was higher at 20 °C. The results suggest that temperature increases the levels of variability and FA but the effect seems to be trait and sex specific in D. ananassae.  相似文献

Bilateral symmetry is widespread in animal kingdom, however most animal can deviate from expected symmetry and manifest some kind of asymmetries. Fluctuating asymmetry is considered as a tool for valuating developmental instability, whereas directional asymmetry is inherited and could be used for evaluating evolutionary development. We use the method of geometric morphometrics to analyze left/right asymmetries in the whole body, in two sites and totally six populations of Ceroglossus chilensis with the aim to infer and explain morphological disparities between populations and sexes in this species. In all individuals analyzed we found both fluctuating asymmetry and directional asymmetry for size and shape variation components, and a high sexual dimorphism. Moreover a high morphological variability between the two sites emerged as well. Differences in diet could influence the expression of morphological variation and simultaneously affect body sides, and therefore contribute to the symmetric component of variation. Moreover differences emerged between two sites could be a consequence of isolation and fragmentation, rather than a response to local environmental differences between sampling sites.  相似文献

Synopsis The percentage of Nile perch, Lates niloticus, containing the prawn, Caridina nilotica, declined from 60–85%, for fish between 5 and 40 cm total length, to less than 10% for fish larger than 80 cm in length. The maximum number of prawns eaten by a Nile perch increased steadily, from 10 prawns for a fish in the 5–9.9 cm length group, to 913 prawns in a fish in the 60–69.9 cm length group, and then fell sharply for larger fish. The mean number of Caridina eaten by fish that were foraging on this animal followed a similar trend. Gill raker spacing increased in direct proportion to fish length and this may prevent fish larger than 70 cm in length from being effective prawn predators.  相似文献

The condyles of 72 aged and sexed Haida Indians were measured for anteroposterior and mediolateral diameter and their approximate areas calculated. Dental wear was assessed for the same individuals. Asymmetry of condyle size did not appear to change with age. In a pair-wise analysis, no relationship was found between the largest of a pair of condyles and the most worn side of the dentition. The difference in size between each pair of condyles (normalized for individual size) was plotted as a histogram and found to have a normal distribution with a mean of 0 and no skewness. Condyle asymmetry does not appear to be related to differential chewing forces but more closely fits the model of fluctuating asymmetry.  相似文献

The surface ultrastructure of the gill arches and the gill rakers of an herbivorous fish, Cirrhinus mrigala was investigated by scanning electron microscopy. These structures show significant adaptive modifications associated with the food and feeding ecology of the fish. Closely lying short gill rakers and narrow inter-raker channels on the gill arches are associated to filter and retain food particles. Prominent epithelial protuberances on the gill rakers and the gill arches enable the taste buds, located at their summit, to project well above the surface of the epithelium. This could increase the efficiency of the taste buds in selective sorting of palatable food. Surface specializations of the postlingual organ are recognized adaptive modifications for selecting, trapping or holding food particles. Prominent molariform teeth born on the lower pharyngeal jaw, and the chewing pad opposite it, are associated to work together as an efficient pharyngeal mill. Mucous goblet cells are considered to elaborate mucus secretions to trap, glue and lubricate food particles for their smooth transport for swallowing.  相似文献

The suspension-feeding cichlids Oreochromis aureus (blue tilapia) and Oreochromis esculentus (ngege tilapia) are able to selectively retain small food particles. The gill rakers and microbranchiospines of these species have been assumed to function as filters. However, surgical removal of these oral structures, which also removed associated mucus, did not significantly affect the total number of 11–200 μm particles ingested by the fish. This result supports the hypothesis that the branchial arch surfaces themselves play an important role in crossflow filtration. Both species selectively retained microspheres greater than 50 μm with gill rakers and microbranchiospines intact as well as removed, demonstrating that neither these structures nor mucus are necessary for size selectivity to occur during biological crossflow filtration. After removal of the gill rakers and microbranchiospines, O. esculentus retained significantly more microspheres 51–70 μm in diameter and fewer 91–130 μm microspheres compared to retention with intact structures, but the particle size selectivity of O. aureus was not affected significantly. These results support conclusions from previous computational fluid dynamics simulations indicating that particle size can have marked effects on particle trajectory and retention inside the fish oropharyngeal cavity during crossflow filtration. The substantial inter-individual variability in particle retention by suspension-feeding fish is an unexplored area of research with the potential to increase our understanding of the factors influencing particle retention during biological filtration.  相似文献

Fluctuating asymmetry was measured by the Pearson correlation coefficient between a-b ridge-counts of the right and left hands. Such data were available for 38 samples, which were grouped by major geographical regions. Significant heterogeneity exists within some of the geographical groups but the between geographical group component is highly significant in both sexes. Our results show that a sizable fraction of variation in fluctuating asymmetry is related to geographical race. There is no evidence that it follows environmental or ecological lines. The variation between geographical races suggests that there is a genetic component in the magnitude of fluctuating asymmetry.  相似文献

Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) is frequently used as a potential marker of developmental stress. It is usually assumed that the distribution of FA within a population is statistically normal with a mean of zero. The relationships between three different FA-dependent survival functions and the resultant FA distribution of surviving individuals are explored. It is shown that with any biologically plausible relationship between survival and FA the resultant distribution is not normal and that this non-normality is dependent upon the form of the survival-FA relationship. Two survival probability functions resulted in leptokurtic distributions, whereas a third generated a slight decline in kurtosis values.  相似文献

Asymmetry in fossils can arise through a variety of biological and geological mechanisms. If geological sources of asymmetry can be minimized or factored out, it might be possible to assess biological sources of asymmetry. Fluctuating asymmetry (FA), a general measure of developmental precision, is documented for nine species of lower Paleozoic trilobites. Taphonomic analyses suggest that the populations studied for each taxon span relatively short time intervals that are approximately equal in duration. Tectonic deformation may have affected the specimens studied, since deviations from normal distributions are common. Several measures of FA were applied to 3–5 homologous measures in each taxon. Measurement error was assessed by the analysis of variance (ANOVA) for repeated measurements of individual specimens and by analysis of the statistical moments of the distributions of asymmetry measures. Measurement error was significantly smaller than the difference between measures taken on each side of a specimen. However, the distribution of differences between sides often deviated from a mean of zero, or was skewed or kurtosic. Regression of levels of FA against geologic age revealed no statistically significant changes in levels of asymmetry through time. Geological and taphonomic effects make it difficult to identify asymmetry due to biological factors. Although fluctuating asymmetry is a function of both intrinsic and extrinsic factors, the results suggest that early Cambrian trilobites possessed genetic or developmental mechanisms used to maintain developmental stability comparable to those of younger trilobites. Although the measures are biased by time averaging and deviations from the normal distribution, these data do not lend strong support to 'genomic' hypotheses that have been suggested to control the tempo of the Cambrian radiation.  相似文献

Recent studies have demonstrated that stress may increase the fluctuating asymmetry of teeth and limbs in laboratory animals. The present study investigates the effects of heat on such parameters. Pregnant laboratory rats are exposed to temperatures of 33 degrees C during gestation. Increases in fluctuating asymmetry of dental dimensions as well as bone density are found for the pups of such females when compared to unstressed controls. A general increase in limb lengths is also reported for young of heat stressed animals. Prenatal selection with differential survival is suggested as a possible explanation for differences found between the experimental and control animals.  相似文献

Development of ornamental characters exposed to directional selection may be particularly sensitive to the effect of parasitic infections. Antlers are ornamental characters of importance in intraspecific interactions, and are in reindeer (Rangifer) developed by both males and females. By antihelmintic treatment of naturally infected female reindeer we show that parasite intensities affect development of antler asymmetry, but not antler length. These results suggest that asymmetry in antlers may reflect parasite intensities and thus be of importance in intraspecific assessment of genetic resistance towards infectious organisms.  相似文献

The characteristics of dermatoglyphic parameters found in both hands of 256 men from the Ningxia Han nationality (control group and coronary heart disease sample of 128 each) were studied. The fluctuating asymmetry (FA) was also analyzed with the following results: 1) the mean value of FRC, TFRC and a-b RC were lower in the coronary heart disease patients compared to the control group; 2) the sample of coronary heart disease patients showed a significant difference in atd [ Feng: need to clarify “ adt ”] ( P < 0 . 0 5 ) found in both hands; 3 ) there was a significant difference in the FAII (P < 0. 01) and FAV (P < 0. 05) between the two groups with the coronary heart disease patient sample with a higher FA. There was also a significant difference in |R-L|≥7 on distribution of atd angle between two samples. [Feng: please clarify the abbreciations used in this abstract-here“| R - L | > - 7”]  相似文献

Developmental instability is the result of random environmental perturbations during development. Its absence (developmental stability) depends on an organism's ability to buffer environmental disturbances. Both genotype and environment influence the phenotypic expression of developmental instability and it is susceptible to selection pressure. We studied developmental instability (as indicated by increased within-individual asymmetry of repeated traits) in vegetative and reproductive structures of three populations of Cistus ladanifer L. living in different soil substrates (serpentine, siliceous and contact zone) to detect tolerance to serpentine soils. Serpentine soils, characterized by high concentrations of heavy metals (Ni, Cr, and Co), low levels of Ca/Mg ratio and high water deficit, can adversely affect plant performance. In this study we demonstrated that asymmetry and within-plant variance were higher in the contact zone population than either the silica or serpentine populations, proving the adaptation of C. ladanifer to serpentine soils. Within-population estimates of developmental instability were concordant for both vegetative and reproductive traits. There was little or no within-individual correlation among estimates of developmental instability based on different structures, i.e., plants that had highly asymmetric leaves always had high developmental instability in translational symmetry. Radial asymmetry of petals was negatively correlated with petal size, especially in silica soil plants, providing evidence of selection for symmetric and large petals. While leaf size was positively correlated with absolute fluctuating asymmetry, suggesting selection for small or intermediate size leaves. Serpentine soils presented the largest foliar and floral traits, as well as shoot elongation, while silica soil plants had the smallest scores. On the contrary, aboveground plant biomass was larger in silica soil plants, while the contact zone plants had the lowest biomass.  相似文献

Phenotypic manipulation (or phenotypic engineering) that alters trait distributions provides a way to increase the statistical power of detecting relationships between traits and fitness. Manipulations relying on plastic responses, however, assume a specific relationship between the perturbation and the alteration of the traits when multiple traits are involved. We measured several traits, including condition measured as fluctuating asymmetry, in the ladybird beetle Harmonia axyridis under six different diets to examine how altered environments affected multiple traits and their distributions. Although diet affected fluctuating asymmetry, we found no consistent relationship between degree of asymmetry and other phenotypic measures. As expected, individual traits were altered by our treatments. Contrary to expectation, relationships among traits were not constant among diets. Our results suggest that assumptions about the relationship between condition and trait values, especially fluctuating asymmetry, cannot be made. Further, studies that use manipulated phenotypes to statistically determine the form of selection must first demonstrate that the pattern of the phenotypic correlation matrix is not itself altered by the manipulation. If the phenotypic correlation matrix is not constant, then experimental estimates of selection coefficients may not reflect selection that occurs in the wild.  相似文献
