Gudgeon Gobio gobio (Cyprinidae) were collected monthly from the Vlara Stream (Czech Republic) during 2004 and examined for the presence of the ectoparasite Paradiplozoon homoion (Diplozoidae; Monogenea). Over 26% of P. homoion showed abnormalities of the attachment sclerites, indicating either a stressful environment or that the quality of the fish host was suboptimal for parasite development. Here, the hypotheses that parasite abundance and the occurrence of morphological abnormalities are correlated with fluctuating asymmetry (FA, the random deviation from the perfect bilateral symmetry) in its fish host were tested. The FA and morphological abnormality are estimators of developmental instability. To estimate fish developmental instability nine meristic and two morphometric bilateral characters on the right and the left sides of the fish were measured. In general, there was no correlation between mean fish FA and parasite abundance or the proportion of parasites with abnormalities. There was, however, a significant relationship between the proportion of abnormal P. homoion and the number of asymmetric meristic traits per individual fish. This study thus indicates that developmental instability of P. homoion , measured as morphological abnormality of the attachment apparatus, is only weakly dependent on the fish quality as measured by FA.  相似文献

Subtle departures from bilateral symmetry (FA) in morphological traits has been used as a measure of developmental stability in populations subjected to genetic and environmental processes as inbreeding, pollution or parasitic infection. Geographic variation of FA was assessed in 19 threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) populations from Miño and Limia rivers, from Galicia (NW Spain). This variation was evaluated using four FA indices on five meristic and one morphometric traits. Temporal variation of FA was also assessed using several samples through time in only one population. Significant geographical variation was detected for pectoral fin rays, lateral forks, lateral plates and spine length. Lateral plates, upper gillrakers, pectoral fin rays and spine length showed significant variation through the time. The variation of FA through the time showed a common performance for all characters during the period considered: a slight increase in the intermediate months with a decrease at the end of the period. Symmetric and asymmetric sticklebacks exhibited similar infection, with one exception: symmetric sticklebacks for lower gillrakers of Antela populations exhibited increased parasite infection relative to asymmetric ones. Sticklebacks with extreme phenotypes exhibited much higher levels of asymmetry than modal ones in all samples for all traits.  相似文献

Morphometric and meristic data from type and other material of ricefishes of the genusOryzias, particularly onO. latipes andO. curvinotus, were retaken to compare relationships of ricefishes indicated by morphological data with the relationships indicated by the cytogenetic analyses (Uwa, 1986). Along with morphometric and meristic characters traditionally used, two morphometric characters are useful for the classification of this genus: the relative length of the abdominal part and the relative position of the dorsal-fin origin. External anatomical data mostly agree with a classification of ricefishes based on karyology; although, like the cytogenetic data, they are not sufficient to distinguish all species, or to define monophyletic groups.Oryzias latipes is widespread in eastern Asia.Oryzias curvinotus, a name applied to ricefish from Hainan Island, is distributed more widely in southern China, including Hainan, Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Hanoi.  相似文献

The use of developmental instability (an individual's failure to produce a consistent phenotype in a given environment) was evaluated to detect the effects of outplanting hatchery fish on wild salmon. Juvenile chinook salmon were collected in 1989, 1990, and 1991 from five drainages in the Snake River Basin. In each drainage we attempted to collect fish from streams with no hatchery supplementation (wild), naturally spawning fish from streams with hatchery supplementation (natural), and fish collected at a hatchery. Forty fish were collected per site and the number of elements in bilateral characters were counted on each side of the fish. Indices of fluctuating asymmetry (FA), a measure of minor, random deviations in perfect symmetry of bilateral counts, were calculated as an estimator of developmental instability. Analysis of character counts from seven paired characters revealed normal distributions. Only one of the characters displayed counts that were statistically larger on one side than the other, indicating that directional asymmetry (DA) or antisymmetry was not a major bias of FA. However, the means of all individual characters revealed a non-statistically significant left side bias. We analyzed our data using two indices of FA (FA1 and FA5) with different levels of sensitivity to DA. Differences in both FA indices were found among years, with collection sites in 1989 having significantly larger FA values than in 1991 (FA p < 0.01). Levels of FA among wild, natural, and hatchery fish were comparatively small (FA1 p = 0.17). This suggests developmental conditions were different in the first year of the study than in the last. The cause of these differences may be linked to either genetic or environmental variation or to gene—environment interactions, but the general population declines of salmon that occurred during this time obscures more specific conclusions.  相似文献

The study addresses the effect of hatchery rearing on morphological variation and developmental stability of Atlantic salmon parr from North‐West Russia. Totally, we collected nine samples. Four wild samples were collected from each of the rivers Kola, Umba, Keret’ and Shuia. Five samples of hatchery‐reared parr were the first‐generation progeny of wild adults from these rivers reared separately at the four hatcheries (one hatchery was represented by two samples). Ten meristic and 48 morphometric cranial characters were analysed. We studied the morphological divergence between wild and hatchery fishes of the same river of origin. To analyze developmental stability we used fluctuating asymmetry (random deviations from perfect bilateral symmetry). It was found that hatchery‐reared parr significantly differ from wild parr in both meristic characters and the shape of cranial bones. Different hatcheries caused similar effect on morphological variation in all populations. Fluctuating asymmetry in morphometric characters was significantly higher in hatchery fish than in wild from the Shuia River, indicating a higher level of developmental instability. However, wild parr from the Keret’ River had significantly higher fluctuating asymmetry than cultivated parr of the same origin, possible due to a high infection pressure of the parasite Gyrodactylus salaris Malmberg which has led to significant decline of the wild salmon population in this river, or from genetic changes caused by cultivation. The obtained results indicate a notable effect of hatchery environment on Atlantic salmon’s phenotype.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Fluctuating asymmetry (FA), defined as small random deviations from the ideal bilateral symmetry, has been hypothesized to increase in response to both genetic and environmental stress experienced by a population. We compared levels of FA in 12 bilateral meristic traits (viz. lateral-line system neuromasts and lateral plates), and heterozygosity in 23 microsatellite loci, among four marine (high piscine predation risk) and four pond (zero piscine predation risk) populations of nine-spined sticklebacks (Pungitius pungitius). RESULTS: Pond sticklebacks had on average three times higher levels of FA than marine fish and this difference was highly significant. Heterozygosity in microsatellite markers was on average two times lower in pond (HE [almost equal to] 0.3) than in marine (HE [almost equal to] 0.6) populations, and levels of FA and heterozygosity were negatively correlated across populations. However, after controlling for habitat effect on heterozygosity, levels of FA and heterozygosity were uncorrelated. CONCLUSIONS: The fact that levels of FA in traits likely to be important in the context of predator evasion were elevated in ponds compared to marine populations suggests that relaxed selection for homeostasis in ponds lacking predatory fish may be responsible for the observed habitat difference in levels of FA. This inference also aligns with the observation that the levels of genetic variability across the populations did not explain population differences in levels of FA after correcting for habitat effect. Hence, while differences in strength of selection, rather than in the degree of genetic stress could be argued to explain habitat differences in levels of FA, the hypothesis that increased FA in ponds is caused by genetic stress cannot be rejected.  相似文献

Synopsis Examination of more than 2,000 alewives (Alosa pseudoharengus) and blueback herring (A. aestivalis) from various areas in the Saint John River, N.B., showed differences in their morphometric and meristic characters. They differed also in length and age, compositions, spawning time, length and age at maturity, back-calculated lengths, and growth parameters. Within each species, between-area comparisons showed significant differences in some of their meristic characteristics.To test a homing hypothesis for alewives, a multivariate analysis was performed on eight meristic characters. Two discriminant function programs, discriminant analysis for two groups and a multiple group stepwise discriminant analyses were used. Values of the generalized Mahalanobis D2 and percent overlap in frequency distributions of meristic characters suggest that considerable straying of fish, especially between adjacent areas occurs during upstream spawning migration.This article is one of several papers presented at the Second European Ichthyological Congress, Paris, 8–15 September 1976, to be published in Environmental Biology of Fishes.  相似文献

Random and subtle deviations from bilateral symmetry (fluctuating asymmetry) have long been of interest to biologists who wish to study the susceptibility of organisms to changes in environmental quality. However, the reliability of FA as a biomarker has come under question due to inconsistent results in the literature. We conducted a meta-analysis of published literature to test the hypothesis that FA is a reliable biomarker of environmental stress in insects and identify possible sources of variation amongst studies. We expected studies to detect larger, positive magnitudes of effect on FA in lab populations due to the lack of confounding effects from other environmental factors compared to wild populations. Additionally, we predicted that studies that used geometric morphometric approaches to FA in shape and size would be more sensitive to changes in environmental quality compared to linear and meristic measures and thus show larger effects on FA. We also expected anthropogenic stressors to generate significantly larger effects on FA compared to naturally occurring stressors due to the organisms’ inability to buffer developmental pathways against a novel stressor. Finally, we predicted comparatively larger magnitudes of effect in studies that verified the environmental factor acting on the organism was a stressor by detecting negative effects on fitness-related traits. Overall, we found that FA is a sensitive biomarker of environmental stress. Environmental stressors explained 36% of the variation of effect on FA across studies. Studies that demonstrated a negative effect of the stressor on fitness-related traits showed significantly larger, positive magnitudes of effect on FA compared to studies that did not detect an effect from the environmental stressor. Additionally, studies conducted under laboratory conditions detected significantly larger, effects on FA compared to field-based studies. The kind of trait measured and the novelty of the stressor did not significantly account for differences amongst studies. Thus, the use of FA as a biomarker of environmental stress is a legitimate tool particularly when studies verify the biological relevance of stressors for the study organism.  相似文献

Sixteen samples of the stone sculpin Paracottus knerii from Baikal Lake, Angara River, and seven water bodies of the Baikal and Angara basins are studied. Variation of the morphometric and meristic characters is considered. It is found that the variation of a number of characters is biotopically conditioned and directed at fish adaptation to deepwater and dwelling in the conditions of rapid current. There are also the characters whose variation does not show any regularity, and it is a consequence of the discontinuity of range of the species. It is shown that the individual pairs of populations have differences in a number of characters, and these differences conform to the subspecies (CD > 1.28) and species levels (presence of hiatus). However all such pairs are connected by “ring overlaps,” thus, it is not possible to consider them as independent taxa.  相似文献

Three types of bilateral asymmetry [antisymmetry (AS), directional asymmetry (DA) and fluctuating asymmetry (FA)] have long been recognized in the literature. It is often assumed that DA and AS have a larger genetic basis than FA, which therefore provides a measure of developmental stability. To examine changes in bilateral asymmetry of the Lusitanian toadfish, Halobatrachus didactylus (Bloch & Schneider, 1801), collected in 10 localities along the Portuguese coast, the distribution of left–right values of three external and two internal morphometric variables and one meristic variable were evaluated for normality and deviations of the mean to 0; kurtosis and skewness were also determined. AS was found for the majority of variables in all locations, although DA was also very frequent. FA was observed in only four locations for three variables. A general pattern of negative and low Spearman correlations between asymmetry levels and concentrations of heavy metals and pollutants and mean heterozygosity was found. However, exceptions to this pattern indicate that different asymmetry types can occur across the distribution range in a single trait and that the three types of asymmetry are dynamically interrelated, the shifts from FA to the other two types possibly being due to environmental stress.  相似文献

Morphometric and meristic characteristics were compared between two genetically divergent groups ofLethenteron reissneri, collected from Hokkaido and Honshu islands, Japan. Whereas significant differences were found in some morphometric and meristic characters, the ranges overlapped somewhat in all of the characters examined between the two groups. Thus, it was difficult to distinguish exactly between the two groups using only the morphological characters. In sympatric populations of the two groups, no significant differences were found in almost all of the morphometric and meristic characters examined. The two groups ofL. reissneri, which are reproductively isolated from each other, should be regarded as sibling species. Assortative mating, based on morphological features, appears unlikely as the reproductive isolating mechanism between the two groups.  相似文献

Efforts to detect effects of cytoplasmic genes are confounded by the problem of partitioning nuclear and cytoplasmic effects. In this study we test for effects of mtDNA haplotype on development in hybrid populations of cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarki) with randomly associated nuclear and mtDNA genotypes. We have previously described several intraspecific hybrid swarms formed by interbreeding of westslope cutthroat trout (O. c. lewisi) and Yellowstone cutthroat trout (O. c. bouvieri). Genetic distance between these subspecies is high (Nei's D = 0.30; mtDNA P = 0.02), and diagnostic alleles at multiple nuclear loci and two distinct mtDNA haplotypes are present in the hybrids. Historical associations between alleles at nuclear loci and between cytotypes and nuclear alleles have largely decayed. We test for differences in meristic characters between fish with alternate mtDNA haplotypes. Counts and fluctuating bilateral asymmetry for these characters have been previously shown to be sensitive indicators of genetic differences that affect development. No differences were found between mtDNA types in meristic counts or fluctuating asymmetry. Therefore, the alternate mtDNA haplotypes had no detectable effect on development as measured by meristic counts in these hybrid populations. However, diagnostic alleles at one nuclear allozyme locus (CK-CI) were associated with several fin ray counts.  相似文献

By four meristic and 14 morphometric characters of the skull the phenetic relationships of Altai Osmans of the genus Oreoleuciscus from lakes Ust-Nur (the Selenga Basin), Sangiyn-Dalai-Nur (the Khangai Highland), and Orog-Nur (Lake Valley) are estimated. Principal components analysis is performed. No interpopulational differences by the set of meristic characters are found. By the set of morphometric characters the specimens from Lake Ust-Nur in the space of principal components are separated from specimens from two other lakes while the distributions of specimens from Lake Sangiyn-Dalai-Nur and Orog-Nur overlap. With consideration of estimates of similarity in the structure of interpopulational differences it is assumed that separation of the phyletic line common for populations of lakes Ust-Nur and Orog-Nur from the phyletic line of population of Lake Sangiyn-Dalai-Nur preceded separation of phyletic lines of populations from lakes Ust-Nur and Orog-Nur.  相似文献

Loss of developmental stability can lead to deviations from bilateral symmetry (i.e. Fluctuating Asymmetry ‐ FA), and is thought to be caused by environmental and genetic factors associated with habitat loss and stress. Therefore, levels of FA might be a valuable tool to monitor wild populations if FA serves as an indicator of exposure to stress due to impacts of habitat loss and fragmentation. In studies examining FA and habitat fragmentation, FA levels are often explained by loss of genetic variation, though few studies have addressed FA’s use as indicator of environmental impact. Here, we investigated whether habitat loss, genetic variation, and/or inbreeding affect the developmental instability in Brazilian Atlantic forest populations of a Neotropical water rat (Nectomys squamipes). We sampled individuals from eight sites within Atlantic forest remnants with different amounts of available forest habitat and assessed FA levels with geometric morphometric techniques using adult mandibles. We used observed heterozygosity (Ho) and inbreeding coefficient (Fis), from seven microsatellite markers, as a proxy of genetic variation at individual and population levels. Populations were not significantly different for shape or size FA levels. Furthermore, interindividual variation in both shape and size FA levels and interpopulational differences in size FA levels were best explained by chance. However, habitat amount was negatively associated with both interpopulational variance and average shape FA levels. This association was stronger in populations living in areas with <28% of forest cover, which presented higher variance and higher average FA, suggesting that Nectomys squamipes might have a tolerance threshold to small availability of habitat. Our work is one of the first to use FA to address environmental stress caused by habitat loss in small mammal populations from a Neotropical biome. We suggest that shape FA might serve as a conservation tool to monitor human impact on natural animal populations.  相似文献

A morphometric truss network system and meristic counts were used to investigate the hypothesis of population fragmentation of pikeperch Sander lucioperca among four major fishing areas in the Caspian Sea drainage. Univariate analysis of variance showed significant differences between the means of the four groups for 20 out of 32 standardized morphometric measurements (27 truss, five traditional characters) and six out of nine meristic counts. The first two canonical discriminant functions accounted for 93 and 92.3% of the total variability in morphometric and meristic characteristics, respectively. A dendogram derived from cluster analysis of Mahalanobis distances and a discriminant analysis among the groups confirmed three distinct populations in these regions, while there was a relatively high degree of overlap between all locations when using meristic characters. The most relevant morphometric characteristics were the measured distances on body heights and the caudal peduncle area. This study indicated that the morphometric truss network system was more adequate than meristic characters for separation among the populations.  相似文献

Synopsis We evaluated morphological differentiation among populations of threespine stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus, from the Limia and Miño basins (Galicia, NW Spain), the river Karup (Denmark) and Aiguamolls de l’Empordà (Girona, northeast Spain), using multivariate analysis of morphometric and meristic characters. Multivariate discriminant analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis uncovered significant differences among the four main groups, between the two groups from Galicia and among populations within the Miño basin. The stickleback from Galicia differed from the Danish group in head and body armour characters. Between the Miño and Limia groups, we found differences in both head and body proportions as well as in number of gill rakers. Within the Miño basin populations varied with respect to head and body armour traits and the number of lower gill rakers. Clustering analysis divided these populations into two groups based on the latter trait: fish from the upper section of river Miño and tributaries (a lower number of lower gill rakers) and fish from the central and lower reaches of the river. Overall, morphometric traits were more useful than meristic ones; however, the two types of data provided congruent information about the morphological differentiation of stickleback populations.  相似文献

Two specimens of Valenciennea helsdingenii (Bleeker, 1858) were collected off Punnakayal coast, from Gulf of Mannar, southeast coast of India in November 2012. The morphometric and meristic characters of the recorded specimens are described and discussed. This is the first record of the species from the Indian waters that is a range extension of its known range within the Indian Ocean.  相似文献

 Morphological differences among three color morphotypes occurring almost sympatrically (A, reddish type; B, blackish type; C, brownish type) of Sebastes inermis are clarified. Twenty-six morphometric characters and seven meristic characters were examined on about 20 specimens of each morphotype, 15 of the morphometric characters differing significantly. Principal component analysis (PCA) of the morphometric characters showed morphotype C to differ from the other two morphotypes. Canonical discriminant analysis (CDA) of the morphometric characters showed clear separation of each morphotype. Four meristic characters also differed significantly. Modes of pectoral fin ray counts of morphotypes A, B, and C were 15, 16, and 17, respectively, and the modes of anal fin ray counts of morphotypes B and C were 7 and 8, respectively. Many individuals of morphotype A had seven or eight anal fin rays. These differences suggested that the three morphotypes may be reproductively isolated from each other. Gobiocypris rarus, a small, native cyprinid fish, is currently widely used in research on fish pathology, genetics, toxicology, embryology, and physiology in China. To develop this species as a model laboratory animal, inbred strains have been successfully created. In this study, to explore a method to discriminate inbred strains and evaluate inbreeding effects, morphological variation among three wild populations and three inbred stocks of G. rarus was investigated by the multivariate analysis of eight meristic and 30 morphometric characters. Tiny intraspecific variations in meristic characters were found, but these were not effective for population distinction. Stepwise discriminant analysis and cluster analysis of conventional measures and truss network data showed considerable divergence among populations, especially between wild populations and inbred stocks. The average discriminant accuracy for all populations was 82.1% based on conventional measures and 86.4% based on truss data, whereas the discriminant accuracy for inbred strains was much higher. These results suggested that multivariate analyses of morphometric characters are an effective method for discriminating inbred strains of G. rarus. Morphological differences between wild populations and inbred strains appear to result from both genetic differences and environmental factors. Thirteen characters, extracted from stepwise discriminant analysis, played important roles in morphological differentiation. These characters were mainly measures related to body depth and head size.  相似文献
