This paper investigates the causal relationships between per capita CO2 emissions, gross domestic product (GDP), renewable and non-renewable energy consumption, and international trade for a panel of 25 OECD countries over the period 1980–2010. Short-run Granger causality tests show the existence of bidirectional causality between: renewable energy consumption and imports, renewable and non-renewable energy consumption, non-renewable energy and trade (exports or imports); and unidirectional causality running from: exports to renewable energy, trade to CO2 emissions, output to renewable energy. There are also long-run bidirectional causalities between all our considered variables. Our long-run fully modified ordinary least squares (FMOLS) and dynamic ordinary least squares (DOLS) estimates show that the inverted U-shaped environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis is verified for this sample of OECD countries. They also show that increasing non-renewable energy increases CO2 emissions. Interestingly, increasing trade or renewable energy reduces CO2 emissions. According to these results, more trade and more use of renewable energy are efficient strategies to combat global warming in these countries.  相似文献

This study investigates the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis using a country’s ecological footprint as an indicator of environmental degradation. Ninety-three countries were examined, categorized by income. The fixed effects and the generalized method of moments results clearly showed an inverted U-shaped relationship between the ecological footprint and GDP growth, which represents the EKC hypothesis in upper middle- and high-income countries but not in low- and lower middle-income countries. This relationship only occurs in a stage of economic development in which technologies are available that improve energy efficiency, energy saving and renewable energy, which are not accessible for countries with low income due to their high cost. Moreover, energy consumption, urbanization, and trade openness increase environmental damage through their positive effect on the ecological footprint of most countries across all income groups. However, financial development reduces environmental degradation in lower middle-, upper middle- and high-income countries. This relationship confirms that loans from banks are primarily given to firms that establish investments in projects that are mostly environmentally friendly. From the results of this study, a number of recommendations can be provided for the investigated countries.  相似文献

This study investigates whether better governess and corruption control help to form the inverted U-shaped relationship between income and pollution in Cambodia for the period of 1996–2012. The outcome from the Generalized Method of Moments and the Two-stage Least Squares revealed that GDP, urbanization, energy consumption, and trade openness increase CO2 emission while the control of corruption and governess can reduce CO2 emission. It is fundamental to note that the environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis was not confirmed in Cambodia. Based on the retrieved results, we recommend for urban planners to utilize policies that will allow them to improve urban planning by controlling sewage, industrial waste, and solid waste which are some of the major causes for the environmental deterioration in Cambodia's major cities. It is also crucial to implement pollution and trade-related actions and strategies to increase the environmental protection from trade. Additionally, it is important for Cambodia to increase the corruption control as this step will strengthen the environmental regulations which will reduce pollution. Finally, a better governess is also important to improve the quality of the environment.  相似文献

An economic analysis of biomass power generation was conducted. Two key technologies--direct combustion with a steam turbine and gasification with a syngas engine--were mainly examined. In view of the present domestic biomass infrastructure of Korea, a small and distributed power generation system ranging from 0.5 to 5 MW(e) was considered. It was found that gasification with a syngas engine becomes more economically feasible as the plant size decreases. Changes in the economic feasibilities with and without RPS or heat sales were also investigated. A sensitivity analysis of each system was conducted for representative parameters. Regarding the cost of electricity generation, electrical efficiency and fuel cost significantly affect both direct combustion and gasification systems. Regarding the internal rate of return (IRR), the heat sales price becomes important for obtaining a higher IRR, followed by power generation capacity and electrical efficiency.  相似文献

The generalized Trivers-Willard hypothesis (gTWH) [Kanazawa, S., 2005. Big and tall parents have more sons: further generalizations of the Trivers-Willard hypothesis. J. Theor. Biol. 235, 583-590) proposes that parents who possess any heritable trait which increases the male reproductive success at a greater rate than female reproductive success in a given environment will have a higher-than-expected offspring sex ratio, and parents who possess any heritable trait which increases the female reproductive success at a greater rate than male reproductive success in a given environment will have a lower-than-expected offspring sex ratio. One heritable trait which increases the reproductive success of daughters much more than that of sons is physical attractiveness. I therefore predict that physically attractive parents have a lower-than-expected offspring sex ratio (more daughters). Further, if beautiful parents have more daughters and physical attractiveness is heritable, then, over evolutionary history, women should gradually become more attractive than men. The analysis of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health) confirm both of these hypotheses. Very attractive individuals are 26% less likely to have a son, and women are significantly more physically attractive than men in the representative American sample.  相似文献

Models of population structure have emphasized the importance of sex in maintaining lineages. This is because, despite the well known ‘two‐fold cost of sex’ compared with asex, it is considered that recombination rids the genome of accumulated mutations and increases its potential for adaptive variation. However, asexual lineages of eukaryotic organisms can also rapidly gain genetic variance directly by various mutational processes, thereby proving that so‐called ‘clones’ do not have strict genetic fidelity ( Lushai & Loxdale, 2002 ; Loxdale & Lushai, 2003a ), whereas the variation so produced may well have adaptive advantage during the evolutionary process. This being so, obligated asexuals or cyclical parthenogens that occasionally indulge in sexual recombination (‘rare sex’) cannot be deemed as ‘evolutionary dead‐ends’( Lushai, Loxdale & Allen, 2003a ). In addition, the persistence of asexual lineages (i.e. lineage longevity) may also involve the integrity of the telomere region, the physical end of the chromosomes ( Loxdale & Lushai, 2003b ). In this earlier study on this topic, we argued that the persistence and ultimate senescence of eukaryotic cell lineages (based upon the frequency of ‘capped’ and ‘uncapped’ chromosomes related to telomere functionality; Blackburn, 2000 ) may directly relate to the survival and persistence of lineages of whole asexual organisms. Aphids are a good model system to test this hypothesis because they show a variety of sexual/asexual reproductive strategies, whereas their mode of asexual reproduction is of the mitotic (= apomictic) type. We also suggested that many aphid lineages require occasional or even rare sexual recombination to re‐set telomere length to allow lineages to persist. Ample empirical evidence from diverse taxa, lineages, and different developmental stages now reveals that the telomere states are indeed re‐set by recombination (homologous or meiotic), thereby rejuvenating the lineage in question. The generational clock element of telomeric functionality has also been successfully described in artificially‐induced mammalian clonal systems. It thus appears that telomere function is a central molecular mechanism instigating and promoting lineage continuity per se. By contrast, we hypothesized that other long‐lived asexuals, or the rare category of ancient asexuals such as bdelloid rotifers, have compensatory mechanisms for maintaining chromosome functional integrity, which are somewhat different from conventional telomeric repeats. In the present study, we carry the analogy between eukaryotic cell functionality and aphid lineages a stage further. Here, we hypothesize that the changing frequency of capped and uncapped telomeres, progressing to senescence in a stochastic manner, may be an underlying factor that significantly contributes to population dynamics in asexual lineage evolution. © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2007, 90 , 719–728.  相似文献

The impact of herbivores and other pests on plants varies greatly from year to year. Here we develop an analytical model of a temporal niche dynamic as a tool to examine how natural fluctuations in pest (enemy) levels may determine coexistence in competing annual plant species when one but not the other is affected by the pest. We show that the probability and speed with which the resistant drives out the sensitive species, coexists with it, or is driven out by its sensitive competitor depends on the cost of pest-resistance to the unaffected species, the frequency of high pest levels in the habitat and the competitive advantage of the sensitive species when the pest is not actively present. The interaction is regulated primarily by pest impact on relative seedling survival of the two, with relative yield per capita of seeds viable into the following season (effective fecundity) the next most vulnerable life-cycle stage.  相似文献

Abstract. It is suggested that increased levels of free cytosolic calcium ([Ca2+]cyt) may serve as the primary physiological transducer of chilling injury in plants. Numerous similarities between the effects of [Ca2+]cyt-raising treatments on plants and the effects of chilling temperatures on chilling-sensitive (CS) plants are noted. It is proposed that chilling temperatures may lead to increases in [Ca2+]cyt in CS plant cells by reducing the rate at which they exclude Ca2+ from their cytosol and that rapid cooling (coldshock) may cause rapid increases in [Ca2+]cyt due to the activation of voltage-dependent cation channels. Chill-induced increases in [Ca2+]cyt in the cells of CS plants may reflect either an inherent inability of such plants to maintain homeostatic levels of Ca2+ at low temperatures or a stress-induced reaction which has evolved to enable such cells to cope more effectively with the short-term hardships imposed by cold. Previous proposals concerning the physiological transduction of chilling injury are also discussed. It is argued that there is little evidence to suggest that the immediate effects of low temperatures on CS cells include either decreases in ATP levels, general increases in the passive permeability of membranes, or increased rates of fermentation.  相似文献

The supramammillary area (SUM) of the hypothalamus has wide spread connection with numerous brain structures. It is known that the SUM can control the frequency of the hippocampal theta rhythm, which plays a role in the cognitive functions of the hippocampal formation. In order to examine the role of the specific cells of the SUM in learning and memory, selective cholinergic neurotoxic or excitotoxic lesioned rats of the SUM were tested for spatial memory on the Morris water maze (MWM) test. After the behavior tests, the expression of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in the hippocampus was studied using the immunohistochemistry. In the MWM test, both lesion of the SUM with 192 IgG-saporin or ibotenic acid produced the impairment of spatial learning and memory. The expression of AChE immunreactive neurons in the hippocampal CA3 region was decreased after injections of 192 IgG-saporin into the SUM. These findings suggest that cholinoceptive cells of the SUM area may play a critical role in the process of learning and memory.  相似文献

It has been proposed that NAD depletion resulting from excessive activation of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase is responsible for secondary energy failure after transient cerebral ischemia. However, this hypothesis has never been verified by measurement of ATP and NAD levels in the same tissue sample. In this study, we therefore investigated the effect of transient focal cerebral ischemia on the temporal profiles of changes in the levels of energy metabolites and NAD. Ischemia was induced in mice by occluding the left middle cerebral artery using the intraluminal filament technique. Animals were subjected to 1-h ischemia, followed by 0, 1, 3, 6, or 24 h of reperfusion. During ischemia, ATP levels, total adenylate pool, and adenylate energy charge dropped to approximately 20, 50, and 40% of control, respectively, whereas NAD levels remained close to control. Energy state recovered transiently, peaking at 3 h of recovery (ATP levels and total adenylate pool recovered to 78 and 81% of control). In animals subjected to reperfusion of varying duration, the extent of ATP depletion was clearly more pronounced than that of NAD. The results imply that depletion of NAD pools did not play a major role in secondary disturbances of energy-producing metabolism after transient focal cerebral ischemia. Changes in ATP levels were closely related to changes in total adenylate pool (p<0.001). The high energy charge after 6 h of reperfusion (0.90 versus a control value of 0.93) and the close relationship between the decline of ATP and total adenylate pool suggest that degradation or a washout of adenylates (owing to leaky membranes) rather than a mismatch between energy production and consumption is the main causative factor contributing to the secondary energy failure observed after prolonged recovery.  相似文献

The tobacco nuclear matrix attachment region (MAR), RB7, has been shown to have a much greater effect on transgene expression in cultured cells than in transgenic plants. This is comparable to work in mouse systems showing that MARs have a positive effect on transgene expression in embryonic tissues but not adult tissues. There are several possible explanations for these observations. One is that cell differentiation state and proliferation rate can affect MAR function. We tested this possibility by initiating suspension cell cultures from well-characterized transgenic plants transformed with 35S::GUS with and without flanking MARs and then comparing GUS specific activity in the cell lines to those of the transgenic plants from which the cell lines were derived. If cell differentiation state and proliferation rate do affect MAR function, we would expect the ratio of transgene expression (cell suspensions : plants) to be greater in MAR lines than in control lines. This turned out not to be the case. Thus, it appears that MAR function is not enhanced simply because cells in culture divide rapidly and are not differentiated. Because in animal systems the chromosomal protein HMG-I/Y has been shown to be upregulated in proliferating cells and may have a role in MAR function, we have also examined the levels of the tobacco HMG-I/Y homolog by immunoblotting. The level of this protein does not differ between primary transformant cultured cells (NT-1) and Nicotiana tabacum plants (SR-1). However, a higher molecular weight cross-reacting polypeptide was found in nuclei from the NT-1 cell suspensions but was not detected in SR-1 leaf nuclei or cell suspensions derived from the SR-1 plants.  相似文献

An account is given of the influence of different levels of mechanical energy, in the form of bubbling, on the growth of the microalgaDunaliella viridis when other variables (e.g. temperature, nutrient supply, photon fluence) do not change. The extra energy was quantified accurately through the application of the classical equations of mass and energy conservation providing a method for the calculation of the energy efficiency of primary production related to the total energy input, in which photon fluence was found to be the most important. The specific growth rate () of the population vs the input of auxiliary energy fits to a second order polynomial function with a maximum growth rate at 0.63 W m–2. The increase of maximal cell density follows a hyperbolic saturation kinetics, with saturation at those same values of extra energy. Both primary production and the efficiency of energy transformation inD. viridis vs the variation of total energy input fit to hyperbolic functions, reaching a maximum efficiency for primary production of 0.85%.Author for correspondence  相似文献

This work is focused at understanding the interaction of H2S with Myoglobin (Mb), in particular the Sulfmyoglobin (SMb) product, whose physiological role is controversial and not well understood. The scattering curves, Guinier, Kratky, Porod and P(r) plots were analyzed for oxy-Mb and oxy-Hemoglobin I (oxyHbI) in the absence and presence of H2S, using Small and Wide Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS/WAXS) technique. Three dimensional models were also generated from the SAXS/WAXS data. The results show that SMb formation, produced by oxyMb and H2S interaction, induces a change in the protein conformation where its envelope has a very small cleft and the protein is more flexible, less rigid and compact. Based on the direct relationship between Mb's structural conformation and its functionality, we suggest that the conformational change observed upon SMb formation plays a contribution to the protein decrease in O2 affinity and, therefore, on its functionality.  相似文献

Goal, Scope and Background  Assessing future energy and transport systems is of major importance for providing timely information for decision makers. In the discussion of technology options, fuel cells are often portrayed as attractive options for power plants and automotive applications. However, when analysing these systems, the LCA analyst is confronted with methodological problems, particularly with data gaps and the requirement of an anticipation of future developments. This series of two papers aims at providing a methodological framework for assessing future energy and transport systems (Part 1) and applies this to the two major application areas of fuel cells (Part 2). Methods  To allow the LCA of future energy and transport systems forecasting tools like, amongst others, cost estimation methods and process simulation of systems are investigated with respect to the applicability in LCAs of future systems (Part 1). The manufacturing process of an SOFC stack is used as an illustration for the forecasting procedure. In Part 2, detailed LCAs of fuel cell power plants and power trains are carried out including fuel (hydrogen, methanol, gasoline, diesel and natural gas) and energy converter production. To compare it with competing technologies, internal combustion engines (automotive applications) and reciprocating engines, gas turbines and combined cycle plants (stationary applications) are analysed as well. Results and Discussion  Principally, the investigated forecasting methods are suitable for future energy system assessment. The selection of the best method depends on different factors such as required ressources, quality of the results and flexibility. In particular, the time horizon of the investigation determines which forecasting tool may be applied. Environmentally relevant process steps exhibiting a significant time dependency shall always be investigated using different independent forecasting tools to ensure stability of the results. The results of the LCA (Part 2) underline that principally, fuel cells offer advantages in the impact categories which are typically dominated by pollutant emissions, such as acidification and eutrophication, whereas for global warming and primary energy demand, the situation depends on a set of parameters such as driving cycle and fuel economy ratio in mobile applica-tions and thermal/total efficiencies in stationary applications. For the latter impact categories, the choice of the primary en-ergy carrier for fuel production (renewable or fossil) dominates the impact reduction. With increasing efficiency and improving emission performance of the conventional systems, the competition regarding all impact categories in both mobile and stationary applications is getting even stronger. The production of the fuel cell system is of low overall significance in stationary applications, whereas in automotive applications, the production of the fuel cell power train and required materials leads to increased impacts compared to internal combustion engines and thus reduces the achievable environmental impact reduction. Recommendations and Perspectives  The rapid technological and energy economic development will bring further advances for both fuel cells and conventional energy converters. Therefore, LCAs at such an early stage of the market development can only be considered preliminary. It is an essential requirement to accompany the ongoing research and development with iterative LCAs, constantly pointing at environmental hot spots and bottlenecks.  相似文献

Human breast epithelium and the stroma are separated by a layer of myoepithelial (ME) cells and basement membrane, whose disruption is a prerequisite for tumor invasion. The dissolution of the basement membrane is traditionally attributed primarily to an over-production of proteolytic enzymes by the tumor or the surrounding stromal cells. The results from matrix metalloproteinase inhibitor clinical trials, however, suggest that this "protease-centered" hypothesis is inadequate to completely reflect the molecular mechanisms of tumor invasion. The causes and signs of ME cell layer disruption are currently under-explored. Our studies revealed that a subset of pre- and micro-invasive tumors contained focal disruptions in the ME cell layers. These disruptions were associated with immunohistochemical and genetic alterations in the overlying tumor cells, including the loss of estrogen receptor expression, a higher frequency of loss of heterozygosity, and a higher expression of cell cycle, angiogenesis, and invasion-related genes. Focal ME layer disruptions were also associated with a higher rate of epithelial proliferation and leukocyte infiltration. We propose the novel hypothesis that a localized death of ME cells and immunoreactions that accompany an external environmental insult or internal genetic alterations are triggering factors for ME layer disruptions, basement membrane degradation, and subsequent tumor progression and invasion.  相似文献

微生物对整个生态系统具有重要的影响,了解和检测微生物的种类具有十分重要的意义。但是传统的培养方法又不能满足科学研究的需要,荧光原位杂交技术(FISH)就是近年发展起来的一种快速准确检测微生物的方法,作者较全面地介绍了FISH技术的优点、微生物的分离和固定方法,以及原位杂交过程,同时对FISH技术在环境微生物学中的应用及其前景作了展望。  相似文献
