This study evaluated the health risk due to air pollution in São Paulo State, Brazil, comparing Brazil's standards and the World Health Organization (WHO) air quality guidelines. New methodology was applied considering, as hazard parameters, the maximum average concentrations of SO2, NO2, O3, CO, and PM10 from 2007 to 2011. As exposure parameters, population density and location sensitivity were considered. A health risk index based on fuzzy logic was performed to integrate the selected parameters, giving the likelihood of reaching different risk levels. Data gathering and spatial representation of parameters and risk scores were performed by means of geographic information system (GIS). Highest values of risk were observed in the Metropolitan Area of São Paulo and near the cities of Cubatão and Piracicaba, associated to vehicular and industrial emissions and sugar cane burning. Discussions about the need to revise national air quality standards have intensified over the past years. Generally, indices used for air quality do not consider the population exposed. This study showed the integration of GIS with fuzzy logic methodology to be a useful tool for health risk assessment. When evaluating the risk, exposure parameters must be intrinsically considered to enhance the importance of population vulnerability when assessing environmental problems, especially in emerging economies.  相似文献

Exposure to elevated air pollution levels can aggravate pollen allergy symptoms. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between airborne birch (Betula) pollen, urban air pollutants NO2, O3 and PM10 and their effects on antihistamine demand in Gothenburg and Malmö, Sweden, 2006–2012. Further, the influence of large-scale weather pattern on pollen-/pollution-related risk, using Lamb weather types (LWTs), was analysed. Daily LWTs were obtained by comparing the atmospheric pressure over a 16-point grid system over southern Sweden (scale ~3000 km). They include two non-directional types, cyclonic (C) and anticyclonic (A) and eight directional types depending on the wind direction (N, NE, E…). Birch pollen levels were exceptionally high under LWTs E and SE in both cities. Furthermore, LWTs with dry and moderately calm meteorological character (A, NE, E, SE) were associated with strongly elevated air pollution (NO2 and PM10) in Gothenburg. For most weather situations in both cities, simultaneously high birch pollen together with high air pollution had larger over-the-counter (OTC) sales of antihistamines than situations with high birch pollen alone. LWTs NE, E, SE and S had the highest OTC sales in both cities. In Gothenburg, the city with a higher load of both birch pollen and air pollution, the higher OTC sales were especially obvious and indicate an increased effect on allergic symptoms from air pollution. Furthermore, Gothenburg LWTs A, NE, E and SE were associated with high pollen and air pollution levels and thus classified as high-risk weather types. In Malmö, corresponding high-risk LWTs were NE, E, SE and S. Furthermore, occurrence of high pollen and air pollutants as well as OTC sales correlated strongly with vapour pressure deficit and temperature in Gothenburg (much less so in Malmö). This provides evidence that the combination of meteorological properties associated with LWTs can explain high levels of birch pollen and air pollution. Our study shows that LWTs represent a useful tool for integrated daily air quality forecasting/warning.  相似文献

High deposition of gaseous/particulate fluorides and other air pollutants has resulted in an acidification and probable formation of soluble AlFx complexes in the soil in the vicinity of the industrial complex of Cubatão, SE Brazil. With the present field study we aimed at determining the contribution of F and Al uptake from fluoride-contaminated soil, supposedly as AlFx complexes, to the increase of foliar F and Al contents in saplings of an Al-accumulator tree species (Tibouchina pulchra) which were concomitantly exposed to fluoride-contaminated air and also the proportional contribution of both air and soil contamination to the mentioned foliar accumulation of these elements. The seasonal variations in F and Al accumulation and possible metabolic changes in the plants due to F and Al accumulation were also investigated. The saplings were exposed during three consecutive periods of 16 weeks to: (a) air and soil from a reference site (PVnoF); (b) air or soil from two polluted sites (CM-high air pollution, low F and MV-high air pollution, high F); and (c) both air and soil from these polluted sites. After exposure, the changes in the foliar concentrations of F and Al, the relations between both element contents and their relationships with oxidative stress indicators were determined. The data were grouped in three matrices: PVnoF–CMlwF and PVnoF–MVhgF, taking in account the possible air/soil exposure combinations in each, and soil/air from all sites. The slight F accumulation in plants of PVnoF–CMlwF matrix was a result of higher uptake from soil than from air (54 and 46%, respectively). At PVnoF–MVhgF matrix, the extremely high F accumulation in leaves of T. pulchra could be attributed to the combination of both air and soil contamination (83 and 17%, respectively). T. pulchra always showed higher foliar Al concentrations than 1000 g g–1 dry mass, mainly after exposure to air and soil of both polluted sites (CMlwF and MVhgF). A highly significant linear regression was estimated between molar Al and F contents, taking in account the data obtained for saplings of T. pulchra cultivated in the different soils and exposed to ambient air of PVnoF, suggesting that both elements were taken as Al–F complexes from soil. The uptake of fluorides from air and/or soil of MVhgF caused significant metabolic changes in T. pulchra, but visible injury supposedly induced by fluorides were observed only when the foliar F contents surpassed 700 g g–1 dry mass. On the contrary, Al did not cause any metabolic stress to the plants.  相似文献

Ozone (O3) is important air pollutant inducing severe losses of horticultural production. Cultivars of the same species, but with different leaf colors, may differ in their ozone sensitivity. However, it has not been clarified yet if different leaf coloration influences such a sensitivity. In this study, two purple-leafed and two green-leafed cultivars of Pakchoi were selected for ozone fumigation (240 ± 20 nmol mol–1, 09:00–16:00 h). Elevated O3 decreased chlorophyll content, increased anthocyanin (Ant) content, damaged cell membrane integrity, enhanced antioxidative enzyme activities, depressed photosynthetic rate (P N) and stomatal conductance (g s), inhibited maximal quantum yield (Fv/Fm) and effective quantum yield [YII] of PSII photochemistry, and caused visible injury. Purple-leafed cultivars with higher Ant contents were more tolerant than green-leafed cultivars as indicated by lower relative enhancement in malondialdehyde content and lower relative losses in P N, g s, Fv/Fm, and YII. The higher ability to synthesize Ant in the purple-leafed cultivars contributed to their higher photoprotective ability.  相似文献

采用开顶箱(OTC)法和遮光网技术,设置100 n L/L臭氧熏气与3个辐射减弱梯度结合,模拟臭氧浓度升高和太阳辐射减弱的复合大气背景。用BIOLOG生态测试板,采用孔平均颜色变化率法(AWCD)测定冬小麦根际土壤微生物利用不同碳源的能力,计算微生物群落多样性指数,对不同碳源的利用率进行了主成分分析。两年试验结果显示,臭氧熏气与太阳辐射减弱复合作用,降低了土壤微生物对碳源的利用速度和利用总量;除了聚合物以外其它碳源利用率显著降低;对土壤微生物多样性没有直接的影响;对碳源降解的抑制效应大于增强的O3与减弱的太阳辐射两因素各自的单独作用。太阳辐射减弱20%,一定程度上增加了对聚合物类的分解。O3熏气条件下太阳辐射减弱,糖类、胺类代谢变异度较高,受环境影响较大。  相似文献

We examined the effects of ambient ozone, at the somma of Lake Mashu in northern Japan, on the growth and photosynthetic traits of two common birch species in Japan (mountain birch and white birch). Seedlings of the two birch species were grown in open-top chambers and were exposed to charcoal-filtered ambient air (CF) or non-filtered ambient air (NF) at the somma of Lake Mashu during the growing season in 2009. For the mountain birch, ambient ozone significantly increased the ratio of aboveground dry mass to belowground dry mass (T/R ratio), although no difference in the whole-plant biomass was observed between the treatments. For the white birch, in contrast, ozone exposure at ambient level did not decrease in growth and photosynthesis. These results suggest that ambient O3 at the somma of Lake Mashu may shift the allocation of biomass to above-ground rather than below-ground in the mountain birch.  相似文献

采用开顶式气室(Open-top Chamber, OTC),对水稻"3694繁"(Oryza sativa L., 3694 Fan)在浙江嘉兴进行田间原位臭氧(O3)熏气实验,研究不同臭氧浓度熏气对水稻生长以及C、N,S元素分配的影响。实验设置分4个水平:过滤大气组(CF,10 nL/L)、自然大气组(NF,40 nL/L)和两个不同浓度的臭氧处理组(O3-1:100 nL/L; O3-2:150 nL/L)。主要结果表明:(1)开始臭氧熏气时,各个处理组单茎水稻各组分生物量没有差异. 在熏气后期(水稻成熟期),臭氧处理使单茎水稻根、茎和穗生物量显著下降,根冠比降低,株高显著降低,表明臭氧胁迫增加水稻地上部分的干物质分配,且对株高的影响可能大于对地上生物量的影响;(2)臭氧处理使水稻根和茎C元素含量下降,叶C元素含量上升,表明臭氧胁迫提高了叶片中碳分配,而降低了根和茎的碳分配;(3)各个组分N元素含量上升和碳氮比下降;(4)茎、叶和穗S元素含量上升,可能会增强水稻抗氧化系统的作用,从而抵抗臭氧胁迫。所有实验结果表明臭氧浓度升高会对水稻生长产生严重不利影响,从而导致水稻各个组分的C、N、S元素分配格局发生改变。  相似文献

Short-term effects of ozone (O3) on phyllosphere fungi were studied by examining fungal populations from leaves of giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum (Lindl.) Buchholz) and California black oak (Quercus kelloggii Newb.). Chronic effects of both O3 and sulfur dioxide (SO2) were studied by isolating fungi from leaves of mature Valencia orange (Citrus sinensis L.) trees. In this chronic-exposure experiment, mature orange trees were fumigated in open-top chambers at the University of California, Riverside, for 4 years with filtered air, ambient air plus filtered air (1:1), ambient air, or filtered air plus SO2 at 9.3 parts per hundred million. Populations of Alternaria alternata (Fr.) Keissler and Cladosporium cladosporioides (Fres.) de Vries, two of the four most common fungi isolated from orange leaves, were significantly reduced by chronic exposure to ambient air. In the short-term experiments, seedlings of giant sequoia or California black oak were fumigated in open-top chambers in Sequoia National Park for 9 to 11 weeks with filtered air, ambient air, or ambient air plus O3. These short-term fumigations did not significantly affect the numbers of phyllosphere fungi. Exposure of Valencia orange trees to SO2 at 9.3 parts per hundred million for 4 years reduced the number of phyllosphere fungi isolated by 75% compared with the number from the filtered-air treatment and reduced the Simpson diversity index value from 3.3 to 2.5. A significant chamber effect was evident since leaves of giant sequoia and California black oak located outside of chambers had more phyllosphere fungi than did seedlings within chambers. Results suggest that chronic exposure to ambient ozone or SO2 in polluted areas can affect phyllosphere fungal communities, while short-term exposures may not significantly disturb phyllosphere fungi.  相似文献

A second order rotatable design was used to obtain polynomial equations describing the effects of combinations of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and ozone (O3) on foliar injury and plant growth. The response surfaces derived from these equations were displayed as contour or isometric (3-dimensional) plots. The contour plots aided in the interpretation of the pollutant interactions and were judged easier to use than the isometric plots. Plants of `Grand Rapids' lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.), `Cherry Belle' radish (Raphanus sativus L.), and `Alsweet' pea (Pisum sativum L.) were grown in a controlled environment chamber and exposed to seven combinations of SO2 and O3. Injury was evaluated based on visible chlorosis and necrosis and growth was evaluated as leaf area and dry weight. Covariate measurements were used to increase precision. Radish and pea had greater injury, in general, that did lettuce; all three species were sensitive to O3, and pea was most sensitive and radish least sensitive to SO2. Leaf injury responses were relatively more affected by the pollutants than were plant growth responses in radish and pea but not in lettuce. In radish, hypocotyl growth was more sensitive to the pollutants than was leaf growth.  相似文献

Summary

Ozone, though not a free radical species, mediates its toxic effects through free radical reactions as a consequence of its high redox potential. Upon inspiration the first physical interface encountered by ozone is a thin layer of aqueous material, the epithelium lining fluid (ELF) which overlays, and is partially derived from, the underlying pulmonary epithelium. ELF is the first physical interface encountered by ozone and the majority of its primary actions are confined to this compartment. ELF contains a range of antioxidants, including the small molecular weight antioxidants: uric acid (UA), ascorbic acid (AH2) and reduced glutathione (GSH). These compounds are present in large quantities and display high intrinsic reactivities toward ozone, consistent with their role as sacrificial substrates in this setting. In this paper we examine the concept that antioxidants, in ELF, represent the first tier of defence against the oxidizing effects of ozone. Since the concentration of these antioxidants appears to differ between individuals, we propose that these protective substances may dictate, in part, an individual's sensitivity to oxidizing air pollutants such as ozone.  相似文献

Following an invasion of exotic annual grasses into California oak woodlands, grass species dominance shifted from native perennials to exotic annuals. In combination with other ecosystem and species characteristics, species-specific N preferences may influence species coexistence and dominance. If species N preferences follow dominance patterns in California oak woodlands, then the more dominant exotic grasses should prefer the most abundant inorganic soil N form (NH4+), while the subordinate native grasses should prefer the less available inorganic (NO3?) or organic (glycine) soil N forms. To investigate this prediction, we applied 15N-labeled NH4+, NO3?, and glycine to soil and measured % 15N recovery by two dominant annual grasses (Bromus diandrus and Bromus hordeaceus) and two subordinate perennial grasses (Elymus glaucus and Nassella pulchra). As expected, shoots of B. diandrus recovered more 15N-NH4+ (74%) than either 15N-NO3? (51%) or 15N-glycine (39%). B. diandrus also captured at least 3.2 times more 15N-NH4+ than subordinate grasses. Dominant B. hordeaceus, however, demonstrated no N form preferences. As hypothesized, shoots of subordinate E. glaucus and N. pulchra recovered 2.1–2.3 times more 15N-NO3? than 15N-NH4+ and increased %N by 4.8–5.7% in response to the application of 15N-NO3?. Both subordinate grasses did not prefer 15N-glycine over 15N-NH4+, suggesting that the importance of this N form in structuring species coexistence in California oak woodlands is minimal. These results support our theory that species N preferences follow dominance patterns in California oak woodlands. To further understand the role of these species-specific N preferences in structuring dominance, the importance of N form versus such characteristics as rooting distribution and species phenologies needs to be explored in the presence of interspecific competition.  相似文献

Human activities result in a wide array of pollutants being released to the atmosphere. A number of these pollutants have direct effects on plants, including carbon dioxide (CO2), which is the substrate for photosynthesis, and ozone (O3), a damaging oxidant. How plants respond to changes in these atmospheric air pollutants, both directly and indirectly, feeds back on atmospheric composition and climate, global net primary productivity and ecosystem service provisioning. Here we discuss the past, current and future trends in emissions of CO2 and O3 and synthesise the current atmospheric CO2 and O3 budgets, describing the important role of vegetation in determining the atmospheric burden of those pollutants. While increased atmospheric CO2 concentration over the past 150 years has been accompanied by greater CO2 assimilation and storage in terrestrial ecosystems, there is evidence that rising temperatures and increased drought stress may limit the ability of future terrestrial ecosystems to buffer against atmospheric emissions. Long‐term Free Air CO2 or O3 Enrichment (FACE) experiments provide critical experimentation about the effects of future CO2 and O3 on ecosystems, and highlight the important interactive effects of temperature, nutrients and water supply in determining ecosystem responses to air pollution. Long‐term experimentation in both natural and cropping systems is needed to provide critical empirical data for modelling the effects of air pollutants on plant productivity in the decades to come.  相似文献

Environmental toxicants such as industrial wastes, air particulates from machinery and transportation vehicles, and pesticide run-offs, as well as many chemicals, have been widely studied for their effects on human and wildlife populations. Yet other potentially harmful environmental pollutants such as electromagnetic pulses, noise and vibrations have remained incompletely understood. Because developing embryos undergo complex morphological changes that can be affected detrimentally by alterations in physical forces, they may be particularly susceptible to exposure to these types of pollutants. We investigated the effects of low frequency vibrations on early embryonic development of two aquatic species, Xenopus laevis (frogs) and Danio rerio (zebrafish), specifically focusing on the effects of varying frequencies, waveforms, and applied direction. We observed treatment-specific effects on the incidence of neural tube defects, left-right patterning defects and abnormal tail morphogenesis in Xenopus tadpoles. Additionally, we found that low frequency vibrations altered left-right patterning and tail morphogenesis, but did not induce neural tube defects, in zebrafish. The results of this study support the conclusion that low frequency vibrations are toxic to aquatic vertebrates, with detrimental effects observed in two important model species with very different embryonic architectures.  相似文献

The role of ascorbate in mediating ozone resistance was examined in Plantago major L. Seedlings of eleven populations which exhibited differential resistance to ozone were fumigated in controlled environment chambers with charcoal/Purafil®-filtered air (CFA) or CFA plus 15 nmol·mol–1 ozone overnight rising to a maximum between 12:00–16:00 hours of 75 nmol·mol–1 for 14 d. Measurements of ascorbate content were made on apoplastic and symplastic extracts. Populations differed in their constitutive level of ascorbate in youngest fully expanded leaves, and regression analysis revealed a significant correlation between ascorbate content in ozone-treated leaves and the ozone resistance of the populations. The relationship was stronger using apoplastic ascorbate levels than with corresponding symplastic measurements. The ascorbate content of the youngest fully expanded leaf of an ozone sensitive population was increased by foliar application of ascorbate. No significant difference in stomatal conductance was found between control and ascorbate-treated plants. Following spraying, plants were fumigated with 400 nmol·mol–1 ozone for 7 h. In control plants, ozone exposure resulted in extensive visible leaf damage (20–70 % at the end of the fumigation period) and decreased rates of CO2 assimilation (–57 %). However, ascorbate treatment prevented the appearance of visible injury, and ameliorated the decline in photosynthesis induced by ozone (–26 %). Modelled data estimating the extent of protection afforded by apoplastic ascorbate against ozone supported the experimental observations. The results suggested that although apoplastic ascorbate plays an important role, other factors must also contribute to the mediation of ozone resistance in P. major.  相似文献

We estimate the effects of air-pollution exposure on low birthweight, birthweight, and prematurity risk in South China, for all expectant mothers and by maternal age group and child sex. We do so by exploiting exogenous improvement in air quality during the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games, when strict regulations were mandated to assure better air quality. We use daily air-pollution levels collected from monitoring stations in Guangzhou, the Asian Games host city, and Shenzhen, a nearby control city, between 2009 and 2011. We first show that air quality during the Asian Games significantly improved in Guangzhou, relative to Shenzhen. Next, using birth-certificate data for both cities for 2009–2011 and using expected pregnancy overlap with the Asian Games as an instrumental variable, we study the effects of three pollutants (PM10, SO2, and NO2) on birth outcomes. Four main conclusions emerge: 1) air pollutants significantly reduce average birthweight and increase preterm risk; 2) for birthweight, late pregnancy is most sensitive to PM10 exposure, but there is not consistent evidence of a sensitive period for other pollutants and outcomes; 3) for birthweight, babies of mothers who are at least 35 years old show more vulnerability to all three air pollutants; and 4) male babies show more vulnerability than female babies to PM10 and SO2, but birthweights of female babies are more sensitive than those of male babies to NO2.  相似文献

Air pollution represents a threat to biodiversity throughout the world and particularly in the Mediterranean area, where high tropospheric ozone (O3) concentrations and atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition are frequently recorded. Mediterranean annual pastures are among the most important ecosystems in southern Europe due to their high biodiversity and extension. Aiming to study the responses of these communities to the main atmospheric pollutants in the Mediterranean region, an experimental study was performed in an open-top chamber (OTC) facility. A mixture of six species representative of annual pastures was grown under field conditions inside the OTC. Plants were exposed for 39 days to four O3 treatments and three doses of N. The species responded heterogeneously to both factors. Legumes did not react to N but were very sensitive to O3: Trifolium species responded negatively, while Ornithopus responded positively, taking advantage of the greater sensitivity of clovers to O3. The grasses and the herb were more tolerant of O3 and grasses were the most responsive to N. Significant interactions between factors indicated a loss of effectiveness of N in O3-polluted atmospheres and an ability of O3 to counterbalance the damage induced by N input, but both effects were dependent on O3 and N levels. The inclusion of plant competition in the experimental design was necessary to reveal results that would otherwise be missed, such as the positive growth responses under elevated O3 levels. Surprisingly, competition within the legume family played the most important role in the overall response of the annual community to O3. Both tropospheric O3 and N deposition should be considered important drivers of the structure and biodiversity of Mediterranean annual pastures.  相似文献

The mechanisms by which air pollution has multiple systemic effects in humans are not fully elucidated, but appear to include inflammation and thrombosis. This study examines whether concentrations of ozone and components of fine particle mass are associated with changes in methylation on tissue factor (F3), interferon gamma (IFN-γ), interleukin 6 (IL-6), toll-like receptor 2 (TLR-2), and intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1). We investigated associations between air pollution exposure and gene-specific methylation in 777 elderly men participating in the Normative Aging Study (1999–2009). We repeatedly measured methylation at multiple CpG sites within each gene’s promoter region and calculated the mean of the position-specific measurements. We examined intermediate-term associations between primary and secondary air pollutants and mean methylation and methylation at each position with distributed-lag models. Increase in air pollutants concentrations was significantly associated with F3, ICAM-1, and TLR-2 hypomethylation, and IFN-γ and IL-6 hypermethylation. An interquartile range increase in black carbon concentration averaged over the four weeks prior to assessment was associated with a 12% reduction in F3 methylation (95% CI: -17% to -6%). For some genes, the change in methylation was observed only at specific locations within the promoter region. DNA methylation may reflect biological impact of air pollution. We found some significant mediated effects of black carbon on fibrinogen through a decrease in F3 methylation, and of sulfate and ozone on ICAM-1 protein through a decrease in ICAM-1 methylation.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted in the field and the greenhouse to determine whether vesicular-arbus-cular mycorrhizae affect growth and competition between the native perennial Stipa pulchra and the introduced annual Avena barbata. Soils in the greenhouse were steam-sterilized, and in the field they were treated with the fungicide benomyl. Stipa pulchra showed decreased shoot dry mass and increased root mass when inoculated, while A. barbata showed the opposite response, increased shoot mass and decreased root mass. Mycorrhizal A. barbata also produced more seeds. Mycorrhizae did not alleviate the negative effects of competition of A. barbata on S. pulchra, as has been demonstrated for other pairs of weedy and nonweedy species. The same three species of mycorrhizal fungi were present in annual and perennial grasslands, but their relative composition was different. When inoculum from the two grassland types were tested in the field, the fungal species began to revert within five months to the species composition found in grasslands of the host plant. This indicates that, once annual grassland has been revegetated with the native S. pulchra, the original fungal species composition may return relatively quickly. Where A. barbata dominates, inoculation with mycorrhizal fungi alone will not suffice for establishing S. pulchra, and the usual practices for control of weed competition need to be employed.  相似文献
