Two cores, one 1141-cm long (An-S) and the other 885-cm long (An-A), were retrieved from Anguli-nuur Lake (41°18′–24′N, 114°20′–27′E, ~ 1315 masl), one of the largest lakes in the transition zone between a semi-humid and semi-arid climate parallel to the present limit of the southeast monsoon along the southeastern Inner Mongolia Plateau in north China. Mineral-magnetic parameters (χlf, ARM, IRM300mT, SIRM and IRM? 300mT) were measured on An-S and two additional parameters (χARM and HIRM) and four inter-parametric ratios (χARM/SIRM, IRM300mT/SIRM, IRM? 300mT/SIRM and SIRM/χlf) were calculated. Potential sources of these lake sediments (catchment soils and dune materials close to the lake and in a distant sand plain) were sampled, and the magnetic properties of the surface-material specimens were measured. A chronological model was developed for An-S by comparing and combining AMS14C dates of An-S with 137Cs, 210Pb and AMS14C dates of An-A. With the help of surface-material magnetism, the magnetic data of An-S in combination with particle size, TOC and C/N and pollen analyses indicate the environmental changes during the last ~ 10,000 years around this lake. Conditions began to ameliorate at 10,900 cal. yr BP (9600 14C yr BP) and thus relatively wet and warm environments prevailed during 10,900–8900 cal. yr BP (9600–8000 14C yr BP). The Holocene optimum or the wettest and warmest conditions, was during 8900–7400 cal. yr BP (8000–6500 14C yr BP). The environment began to deteriorate from 7400 cal. yr BP (6500 14C yr BP) and the driest and coolest conditions occurred during 2200–480 cal. yr BP. There may have been a minor amelioration after 480 cal. yr BP. The inferred changes in palaeoenvironmental conditions around Anguli-nuur Lake are broadly in agreement with those around most other sites on the Inner Mongolia Plateau.  相似文献

A pollen study at Survilly (2235m asl, 06° 49′ 12″ E, 45° 59′ 24″ N), a small peatbog located on the Anterne mountain (Upper-Arve Valley, French north-western Alps) highlights the local role of human activities in Holocene vegetation dynamics of the currently treeless subalpine belt and the consecutive resumption of erosion. As early as 8890 cal. years BP (± 122), Pinus cembra grew close to the site. Grasslands without shrubs were established at around 4624 ± 86 cal. years BP. Due to human activities, spruces extended little after 3600 cal. BP. The intense grazing that resulted in the current alpine meadows goes back to 1436 cal. years BP (± 81). After 4624 cal. BP three clay layers show that from this period, the erosion became as active as during the first steps of the colonization of the vegetation prior to 10,050 cal. BP. During peat growth only a millimetre of clay at the end of the 9400–9050 cal. BP climatic event was recorded.  相似文献

A sediment core located on the West Spitzbergen margin in the Fram Strait (78°54.931′N, 6°46.005′E, water depth: 1497 m) was analyzed for its dinocyst content in order to reconstruct hydroclimatic variations of the last 2500 years. The relative abundance of dinocyst taxa and principal component analysis show a major transition at about 300 cal. years BP. It is characterized by the disappearance of thermophilic taxa Spiniferites mirabilis-hyperacanthus and Impagidinium sphaericum and the increase of polar–subpolar taxa Impagidinium pallidum and Pentapharsodinium dalei. Sea-surface temperature (SST) estimates suggest warmer conditions than present (anomaly~+2 °C) averaging at 7 °C in summer until 300 cal. years BP, although cooling pulses are recorded around 1700, 1500, 1200 and 800 cal. years BP. The last 300 years were marked by a cooling from 7.6 to 3.5 °C and sea-ice cover increasing up to 7 months/yr. The results demonstrate that the Fram Strait area is sensitive to hydroclimatic variations, notably with respect to sea-ice and SSTs, which are linked to the relative strength of northward flow of North Atlantic waters to the East and southward outflow of cold and fresh waters from the Arctic Ocean. Based on our data, the warmest part of our record around 1320 cal. years BP is the only interval of the last 2500 years that provides a possible analogue for the modern post-AD 2000 interval, which is characterized by sea-ice free conditions.  相似文献

An exposed section of nearly 13 m thick was investigated in the ancient depression of Lake Eastern Juyanze, north-eastern China. The succession of lacustrine and aeolian deposits covers a period from about 5400 to 2700 cal. a BP as indicated by four radiocarbon ages of macro-plant debris. Fifteen ostracod taxa were identified of which Limnocythere inopinata and Darwinula stevensoni are by far the most abundant species. Stable isotope (O, C) data of ostracod calcite as well as ostracod species abundances and X-ray diffraction results of bulk sediment samples were used to reconstruct the history of Lake Eastern Juyanze. Highest lake levels (water depth ∼10 m) occurred between 5100 and 4100 cal. a BP and were succeeded by intermediate and low levels until about 3150 cal. a BP. Three short-term events of complete desiccation were recorded between 3150 and 2900 cal. a BP. The lake experienced relatively high levels again for some decades at about 3000 cal. a BP and for at least two centuries after 2900 cal. a BP. According to the ostracod and gastropod record and the high abundance of a large diatom (Campylodiscus clypeus) in the lake sediments oligohaline to slightly mesohaline conditions were reconstructed for most of the lake periods (4-6 g/l). Geochemical and palaeontological records of Lake Eastern Juyanze reveal the retreat of the Asian monsoon after China’s Hypsithermal culminating in climate instability at about 3000 cal. a BP.  相似文献

Palaeolithic archaeology in Tohoku region has long been discussed on constructing chronology, however it is difficult to build reliable chronological order because of poor stratigraphic excavations. In recent radiocarbon dating has advanced. In this paper I discuss the relation between chronology and radiocarbon dating in Tohoku region. At first, I categorize the Palaeolithic industries and establish the chronology by analyzing tool typology, lithic technology, and stratigraphic data. I correlate it with radiocarbon data from sites in Tohoku region. The result of analysis shows that Upper Palaeolithic industries are divided into 18 categories and 8 periods on chronology. The calibration curve IntCal 13 indicated that oldest Early Upper Palaeolithic site appeared around 37,000 cal BP, and late Upper Palaeolithic started about 27,000 cal BP. The pottery first appeared as far back as around 16,000 cal BP. Now we do not have enough radiocarbon data, so we have to gather and examine more 14C data.  相似文献

Lack of submerged vegetation was studied in a small, shallow, alkaline, clear-water lake with high nitrate concentration (mean 9 mg NO3–N L−1) and profuse filamentous green algae (FGA) (mainly Spirogyra sp.). A laboratory microcosm and two lake enclosure experiments were carried out using Elodea nuttallii (Planchon) St John. E. nuttallii grew about 1.7 times as well in sediment from its place of origin compared with sediment from the lake. Differential water quality had no effect, and neither sediment nor water prevented growth in the lake. Nutrient addition reduced plant growth by more than 55% because of shading from epiphytic filamentous green algae (shoot dry weight versus epiphytic algal dry weight, r = −0.491, P < 0.05). Transplanted Elodea plants grew better in enclosures in the lake than in laboratory conditions with lake water and sediment (P < 0.001, t-test). Rare Elodea individuals in the lake indicate the presence of plant propagules in the lake sediment, but excessive growth of filamentous green algae (summer mean 3.2 g dry weight m−2) significantly hamperd plant growth (shoot length reduced from 29 ± S.E.M. 1 to 25 ± 1 cm) and bird herbivory significantly reduced survival (from 82 ± 7 to 40 ± 6%) and shoot growth (from 78 ± 6 to 18 ± 5 cm) and thus eliminates establishment of even modest plant beds. Fish disturbance and sediment stability were not important. Restoration of submerged plants may require reduction of nitrate input, control of filamentous green algae and protection from birds.  相似文献

Here we present the results of the study of two Lower Toarcian carbonate sections located in the Iberian Range of central Spain. Analyses of stable isotope on belemnite calcite allowed calculation of seawater palaeotemperature variations, which were compared with the stratigraphical distribution of ostracods. These organisms are particularly sensitive to ratios of temperature and salinity variations and hence are good indicators of climate changes. From a cooling interval, with seawater temperatures of 13.2 °C recorded at the Pliensbachian?Toarcian transition, seawater temperature began to rise in the lowermost Toarcian Tenuicostatum Zone, reaching average temperatures between 14.6 °C and 16.3 °C during the time of deposition of this Zone. Coinciding with this seawater warming, up to 85% of the ostracods species progressively disappeared during a period of approximately 300 kyr, marking the extinction interval. The extinction boundary, located around the Tenuicostatum?Serpentinum zonal boundary, coincides with a marked increase in temperature in the Serpentinum Zone, on which average seawater temperatures of 22 °C have been calculated. Warming continued through part of the Middle Toarcian Bifrons Zone, reaching average temperatures of 24.7 °C. Readjustment of the ostracod population allowed recovery of these faunas in the upper Serpentinum Zone, although the extinction of a major ostracod group, the healdioids, was also recorded. The correlation between mass extinction and warming infers a causal relationship. Comparison of the results with the records of stable isotopes in belemnites and in bulk carbonates, as well as TOC and facies analysis suggests that the anoxia linked to the Early Toarcian oceanic anoxic event was not the main responsible for the ostracod mass extinction.  相似文献

The archaeal community in the fermentative compartment and faeces of the cow and the rabbit were compared by analysis capillary electrophoresis single-stranded conformation polymorphism (CE-SSCP) profiles of 16S rRNA genes. Ruminal and faecal contents were sampled in five cows for three weeks. Hard and soft faeces were collected in 14 rabbits for three consecutive weeks and cæcal contents were sampled in the third week. The archaeal community differed according to the host species (ANOSIM-R = 0.53 and 0.72 respectively for the comparison of the fermentative compartments and faeces; P < 0.001) and to the location within the digestive tract of both species (ANOSIM-R = 0.37, 0.52 respectively for the cow and the rabbit; P < 0.001). In both species, the archaeal community of the digestive tract was stable over weeks and varied very little between individual animals. The structure (NS) and the richness index (9.9 ± 2.7, 10.1 ± 3.1 respectively, NS) of the archaeal community were similar for the cæcal content and the soft faeces which permitted to use the latter as a representative indicator.  相似文献

Based on the vertically interval sampling in 25 sampling sites in Dangxiong Co salt lake in 2011, a preliminary investigation on population spatial distribution and cysts resources of Artemia in the lake has been conducted. The study achieves four new progresses. First, the average density of Artemia and Artemia cysts in the lake is 4.157 × 103 ind. m−2 and 8.069 × 104 ind. m−2, respectively. Among Artemia, the adults account for 60.31%; Second, different from other salt lakes in horizontal distribution, the Artemia population mainly distributes in the open water, only a little in the shallow water, and there is no distribution in the longshore area in the north part and the estuary region; Third, in vertical distribution, 44.24% of individuals intensively distribute in the upper water layer within 2.0 m, especially 0–0.2 m, where the average density of Artemia and cysts are maximum (129.488 ind. L−1 and 5.728 ind. L−1, respectively). A decrease of distribution density is accompanied by an increase of water depth basically, the percentage of Artemia and cysts decrease to 0.68% and 4.60%, respectively; Fourth, the cysts resources of 14.96 t in the lake are assessed using contour map. 66.35% of them distributed in 0.0–2.0 m water layer and 49.06% concentrate in the 18.21% areas of the central water; Fifth, quantity of cysts suitable for development in the lake is 2.399 ± 0.320 t, with an upper limit of 0.879 t. The study can provide a reference for the sustainable development and exploitation of Artemia in Dangxiong Co salt lake.  相似文献

Phragmites karka (Retz.) Trin, ex. steud, a perennial reed with creeping rhizome from the family Poaceae, is distributed as pure population in brackish water swamps. Populations primarily propagate using ramets but also produce numerous seeds which form part of the seed bank after dispersal and are exposed to extremes of temperature, drought, and salinity stress. Seeds were germinated under a range of salinity (0, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500 mM NaCl) and temperature (10/20 °C, 15/25 °C, 20/30 °C, 25/35 °C, night/day) regimes in 12 h light:12 h dark photoperiod or in complete darkness with 0, 5, 10, 25 mM CaCl2. Salinity, absence of light and high temperature (25/35 °C) reduced germination while calcium generally reversed this effect, more so at cooler temperature regimes. Calcareous soil around Karachi would help alleviate the salinity effect on the germination of P. karka and facilitate its survival.  相似文献

An investigation into salinity responses of Caulerpa taxifolia was undertaken in a series of laboratory trials to evaluate the use of hyposalinity stress as an eradication strategy. The effect of instantaneous (or shock) exposure to reduced salinity (10 ppt) on the effective quantum yield (EQY) of C. taxifolia for different incubation periods (15, 30, 45, 60, 90, 180, 360, 720 and 1440 min) indicated that 180 min or more at this salinity was required to kill the alga. Average EQY declined by 88.2 ± 4.6% (mean ± S.E.) of the pre-treatment level for the 180 min treatment but were as much as 96.6 ± 2.5% lower than pre-treatment EQY for the 1440 min exposure. Exposure for 90 min or less resulted in an intermediate response, whereas lesser exposures (60, 30 and 15 min) had no lasting effect on C. taxifolia health. The effect of gradual changes in salinity, as might be anticipated in an eradication scenario, on EQY of C. taxifolia was investigated through the dilution of seawater (35 ppt) over different time scales (5 h, 2, 4, 7 and 27 days). In all trials >5 h, the response to hyposalinity was the same regardless of the rate of change in salinity with all treatments resulting in a marked loss in EQY below ∼15 ppt. Declines in the average ratio of EQY after to EQY before for 4, 7 and 27 days treatments (85.2 ± 8.2%, 78.8 ± 9.05% and 77.3 ± 18.2% of pre-treatment levels, respectively), were significantly larger than the 5 h treatment (2.6 ± 4.4% of pre-treatment levels). The 2 days salinity reduction (48.5 ± 17.1%) resulted in an intermediate response. In the 5 h treatment, the exposure to salinities below 15 ppt was less than 3 h, which given the result of the preceding trial explains the lack of substantial EQY response as the minimum exposure period required to kill the alga at 10 ppt is ≥180 min. There is thus no evidence that C. taxifolia is capable of acclimation to gradual reductions in salinity. Consequently, hyposalinity is an effective means of killing the algae and may prove highly effective for populations in relatively small, contained water bodies.  相似文献

The study of graphic convergences and divergences in Palaeolithic art is used to understand the culture, territories and interaction systems of human groups. La Covaciella cave has fifteen animal representations and other linear, dots and geometric motifs. The bison stands out; some were executed with complex technical procedures. Two of them were dated by C14 AMS, obtaining a result of 14,260 ± 130 BP (17,733–16,973 cal BP) and 14,060 ± 140 BP (17,503–16,260 cal BP). These correspond chronologically with the beginning of the middle Magdalenian or the very end of the lower Magdalenian. Similar depictions to the bison at La Covaciella are located in other areas of Western Europe. The repertoire of parietal bison displaying graphic similarities with those at La Covaciella is very large; both of the Pyrenean model (Niaux morphotype) and of the Perigordian model (Font-de-Gaume morphotype). A first consideration derived from the search for comparisons involves a new interpretation of the territorial value implied by the term Pyrenean style (Asturias, Cantabria, Basque Country, Navarre, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Hautes-Pyrénées, Haute-Garonne, Ariège, Dordogne, Lot, Ardèche and Vienne). The Font-de-Gaume parietal morphotype is most common in Dordogne. In addition, in some cases, spatial complementariness has been found, with both graphic morphotypes. This article proposes different chronological and anthropological hypothesis to explain the distribution and coexistence of the two graphic models.  相似文献

We present a geochemical record of a 113.6-cm sediment core (LPT V) from Lagoa da Pata, which is located in the forested upper Rio Negro basin. The record reveals significant changes in the environmental history of Amazonia during the late Quaternary. The results of biogeochemical analyses revealed three hydrological and climatic regimes from 50,000 to 10,000 cal yr BP. The first phase, between 50,000 and 26,300 cal yr BP, was characterized by a relatively wet climate as suggested by relatively high total organic carbon (TOC) and chlorophyll derivate concentrations, indicating high productivity linked to a high lake level. A decrease of the TOC and chlorophyll derivate accumulation rates between 43,100 cal yr BP and 26,300 cal yr BP marks a decrease in the productivity linked to a reduced lake level, indicating a decrease in moisture at the end of this phase. The second phase, between 26,300 and 15,300 cal yr BP, was characterized by a decrease in productivity, reaching a minimum at 21,950 cal yr BP, as indicated by a minima in sedimentary chlorophyll and TOC accumulation rates. Values of δ13C increased by 5‰ in relation to the preceding phase, indicating an influence of the C4 organic matter. High iron concentrations and accumulation rates, related to intense erosion of the lateritic crust in the watershed, were observed. All of the observations indicate a dry phase during this period. A third phase, from approximately 15,300 to 10,000 cal yr BP, was characterized by an increase in lacustrine productivity, as shown by an increased in TOC and chlorophyll derivate concentrations and accumulation rates. These increases likely correspond to a lake level rise due to a wetter climate.  相似文献

Little is known about how the growth of individual Gambierdiscus species responds to environmental factors. This study examined the effects of temperature (15–34 °C), salinity (15–41) and irradiance (2–664 μmol photons m−2 s−1) on growth of Gambierdiscus: G. australes, G. belizeanus, G. caribaeus, G. carolinianus, G. carpenteri, G. pacificus and G. ruetzleri and one putative new species, Gambierdiscus ribotype 2. Depending on species, temperatures where maximum growth occurred varied between 26.5 and 31.1 °C. The upper and lower thermal limits for all species were between 31–34 °C and 15–21 °C, respectively. The shapes of the temperature vs. growth curves indicated that even small differences of 1–2 °C notably affected growth potentials. Salinities where maximum growth occurred varied between 24.7 and 35, while the lowest salinities supporting growth ranged from <14 to 20.9. These data indicated that Gambierdiscus species are more tolerant of lower salinities than is generally appreciated. Growth of all species began to decline markedly as salinities exceed 35.1–39.4. The highest salinity tested in this study (41), however, was lethal to only one species, Gambierdiscus ribotype 2. The combined salinity data indicated that differences in salinity regimes may affect relative species abundances and distributions, particularly when salinities are <20 and >35. All eight Gambierdiscus species were adapted to relatively low light conditions, exhibiting growth maxima at 50–230 μmol photons m−2 s−1 and requiring only 6–17 μmol photons m−2 s−1 to maintain growth. These low light requirements indicate that Gambierdiscus growth can occur up to 150 m depth in tropical waters, with optimal light regimes often extending to 75 m. The combined temperature, salinity and light requirements of Gambierdiscus can be used to define latitudinal ranges and species-specific habitats, as well as to inform predictive models.  相似文献

The combined effects of salt stress and gibberellic acid (GA3) on plant growth and nutritional status of maize (Zea mays L. cv., DK 647 F1) were studied in a pot experiment. Treatments were (1) control (C): nutrient solution alone, (2) salt stress (S): 100 mM NaCl, (3) S + GA1: 100 mM NaCl and 50 ppm GA3 and (4) S + GA2: 100 mM NaCl and 100 ppm GA3. Salt stress (S) was found to reduce the total dry matter, chlorophyll content, relative water content (RWC), but to increase proline accumulation, superoxide dismutase (SOD; EC 1.15.1.1), peroxidase (POD; EC 1.11.1.7) and polyphenol oxidase (PPO; 1.10.3.1) enzyme activities and electrolyte leakage. GA3 treatments overcame to variable extents the adverse effects of NaCl stress on the above physiological parameters. GA3 treatments reduced the activities of enzyme in the salt-stressed plants. Salt stress reduced some macro and micronutrient concentrations but exogenous application of GA3 increased these to levels of control treatment. Foliar application of GA3 counteracted some of the adverse effects of NaCl salinity with the accumulation of proline which maintained membrane permeability and increased macro and micronutrient levels.  相似文献

Siboglinids are symbiotic polychete annelids having hemoglobins as essential oxygen- and sulfide-carriers for their endosymbiotic bacteria. We analyzed the structure of the hemoglobins from two species of siboglinids: the monilifera Sclerolinum contortum and the frenulata Oligobrachia webbi (i.e. haakonmosbiensis) from Norwegian cold seeps. Measured by Multi-Angle Laser Light Scattering (MALLS), Sclerolinum shows a 3190 ± 50 kDa hexagonal bilayer hemoglobin (HBL-Hb) and a 461 ± 46 kDa ring-Hb, just as vestimentifera, whereas Oligobrachia has a 409 ± 3.7 kDa ring-Hb only. Electrospray Ionization-Mass Spectrometry (ESI-MS) showed Sclerolinum HBL-Hb composed of seven monomeric globins (15–16 kDa), three disulfide-bonded globin heterodimers and three linkers. The heterodimers always contain globin-b (15814.4 ± 1.5 Da). Sclerolinum ring-Hb is composed of globins and dimers with identical masses as its HBL-Hb, but lacks linkers. Oligobrachia ring-Hb has three globin monomers (14–15 kDa) only, with no disulfide-bonded dimers. Comparison of Sclerolinum hemoglobins between Storegga and Haakon Mosby Mud Volcano, using the normalized height of deconvoluted ESI-MS peaks, shows differences in globin monomers abundances that could reflect genetic differences or differential gene expression between distinct seep populations. The discovery of HBL-Hb in Sclerolinum is a new element supporting the hypothesis of monilifera being phylogenetically more closely related to vestimentifera, than to frenulata.  相似文献

Lake Chaohu is one of the most eutrophic lakes in China. Research on this lake's seasonal and spatial variations in phytoplankton diversity is needed to understand the distribution of eutrophication, as well as to find appropriate comprehensive biodiversity indices to assess the eutrophication status of the lake. The present study indicated that the Margalef index of all samples was as low as 0.799 ± 0.543 in summer (August 2011) and as high as 1.467 ± 0.653 in winter (February 2012). The Margalef index of the river samples had a high mean value and substantial variation compared with the lake samples. The Peilou index of the lake samples was higher than that of the river samples in summer and autumn (November 2011) but lower than that of the river samples in winter. In spring (May 2012), the Peilou index of the western samples was lower than that of the eastern samples. The spatial distribution of the Shannon–Wiener index was more similar to that of the Peilou index in autumn and winter, while in spring and summer, the spatial distribution was affected by both species richness and evenness. High eutrophication levels occurred in the western lake in spring and summer, whereas high levels occurred in the eastern lake, especially in the middle of the lake, in autumn and winter. The total trophic state index (TSI) in all samples exhibited a significant negative correlation with the Margalef (r = −0.726) and Peilou (r = −0.530) indices but a significant positive correlation with the Shannon–Wiener (r = 0.654) index. The partial correlation analysis results implied that these phytoplankton biodiversity indices could serve as synthetic ecological indicators to assess the eutrophication condition of Lake Chaohu.  相似文献

AimsAngiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors are used in diabetic kidney disease to reduce systemic/intra-glomerular pressure. The objective of this study was to investigate whether reducing blood pressure (BP) could modulate renal glucose transporter expression, and urinary markers of diabetic nephropathy in diabetic hypertensive rats treated with ramipril or amlodipine.Main methodsDiabetes was induced in spontaneously-hypertensive rats (~ 210 g) by streptozotocin (50 mg/kg). Thirty days later, animals received ramipril 15 μg/kg/day (R, n = 10), or amlodipine 10 mg/kg/day (A, n = 8,) or water (C, n = 10) by gavage. After 30-day treatment, body weight, glycaemia, urinary albumin and TGF-β1 (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) and BP (tail-cuff pressure method) were evaluated. Kidneys were removed for evaluation of renal cortex glucose transporters (Western blotting) and renal tissue ACE activity (fluorometric assay).Key findingsAfter treatments, body weight (p = 0.77) and glycaemia (p = 0.22) were similar among the groups. Systolic BP was similarly reduced (p < 0.001) in A and R vs. C (172.4 ± 3.2; 186.7 ± 3.7 and 202.2 ± 4.3 mm Hg; respectively). Climate change and human impacts are often implicated in Quaternary megafaunal extinctions. The discovery of associated remains of extinct giant short-faced bears (Arctodus simus) and invading brown bears (Ursus arctos) raises the possibility of competition as another potential factor. We describe fossil remains of both genera from Pellucidar Cave, Vancouver Island, Canada. Analyses of ancient mitochondrial DNA support the identifications of post-cranial brown bear specimens and assign these bears to Clade 4. Our results are consistent with the migration of brown bears from Eastern Beringia to the contiguous United States before the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and to Vancouver Island as environmental conditions became favorable after the LGM. Radiocarbon age estimates on these specimens indicate the presence of giant short-faced bears approximately 13.5 thousand calibrated years before present (cal. ka BP; uncalibrated 11,775 ± 30, 11,720 ± 50, and 11,615 ± 30 BP) and of brown bears immediately preceding (~14.5 cal. ka BP; 12,440 ± 35, 12,425 ± 30 BP) and following this time (~13 cal. ka BP; uncal. 11,100 ± 30 BP), suggesting niche partitioning to reduce competition among these species. We suggest that shifts in food availability or quality due to post-glacial vegetation and faunal changes were probably of primary importance in the arrival and the disappearance of giant short-faced bears on Vancouver Island. This study focuses on a key time period and geographic location that is useful in understanding Pleistocene extinctions in North America.  相似文献

Salsola ferganica L. (Chenopodianceae) is an annual halophytic species. Experiments were carried out in laboratory to determine the effects of temperature, perianths and various types of salinity on seed germination and germination recovery. Seeds were germinated at 6 levels of temperature with perianths, plus perianths and removed perianths in complete darkness for 9 days. The germination responses of the seeds without perianths at 25 °C were determined over a wide range of NaCl, NaHCO3 or NaCl–NaHCO3 mixed stress for 13 days. Perianths seriously affected germination as a barrier for seed germination and the optimal temperature was at 25 °C. Highest germination percentage was obtained under control and seed germination was progressively inhibited with the increase of salinity concentration. The negative effect of NaHCO3 at the same concentration on germination was stronger than that of NaCl and NaCl–NaHCO3 mixed. When substrate salinity was removed, seeds exposed to a high NaCl concentration (400–800 mM), NaHCO3 (50–200 mM) and NaCl–NaHCO3 mixed (100–400 mM) germinated well. Final germination of Salsola ferganica seeds was significantly affected by types of salt at the low salinity (?200 mM) and with increased salinity it was influenced mainly by salinity concentration for various proportion of salt–alkali mixed stress.  相似文献
