Newly reported fungi from Orissa (India) — I

Summary Two species of fungi,Tryblidiella rufula (Spreng.)Sacc. andTrabutia butleri Theiss &Syd. have been figured and described for the first time from Orissa. The former was found growing on dead twigs ofCitrus aurantifolia (Christm.)Swingle and onCitrus sp. and the latter on living leaves ofFicus religiosa L.     

Two new species of Patellaria from India

Summary The paper deals with two new species ofPatellaria i.e.,Patellaria lantanae sp. nov. onLantana camara L. andPatellaria ipomoeae sp. nov. onIpomoea sp.Phoenix sylvestris Roxb. andAcacia arabica Willd. constitute new host records for the above species.     

A note on the occurrence of ellisiellina caudata (Peck) da Camara and its synonymy

Summary Ellisiellina caudata (Peck)da Camara occurring in the Tea Estates of Assam and Coffee estates of Mysore is described. The possibility of the new genusRostrospora Subramaniam &Ramakrishnan based onColletotrichum ciliatum Ramakrishnan T. S. & K. being synonymous withEllisiellina caudata is discussed.     

A taxonomical investigation of the genus Corvomeyenia weltner (Spongillidae)

Summary The taxonomically problematic spongillid genus Corvomeyenia Weltner is analyzed. A north-south evolutionary series composed of Corvomeyenia everetti (Mills), Corvomeyenia carolinensis sp. nov., and Corvomeyenia australis Bonetto & Ezcurra de Drago can be demonstrated. C. carolinensis sp. nov. possesses spicular characteristics that indicate genetic variation from its congeners; in addition, environmental conditions in the type locality of C. carolinensis sp. nov. differ greatly from the optimal conditions for growth of C. everetti (Mills). A new method for phase contrast study of living sponge tissues and a variety of histological and histochemical techniques are used to taxonomically define C. carolinensis sp. nov.

Zusammenfassung Die in taxonomischer Hinsicht problematische Spongilliden-gattung Corvomeyenia Weltner wird analysiert. Von Norden nach Süden lässt sich eine Entwicklungsreihe nachweisen, bestehend aus Corvomeyenia everetti (Mills), Corvomeyenia carolinensis sp. nov. sowie Corvomeyenia australis Bonetto & Ezcurra de Drago. Die Skelettnadeln von C. carolinensis sp. nov. weisen Merkmale auf, welche auf eine genetische Abweichung von seinen Gattungsverwandten hindeuten; überdies unterscheiden sich die Umweltsbedingungen an den Fundorten von C. carolinensis sp. nov. weitgehend von den optimalen Bedingungen für den Wuchs von C. everetti (Mills). Zur taxonomischen Bestimmung von C. carolinensis sp. nov. werden eine neue Methode der Phasenkontrastuntersuchung lebenden Schwam neue Methode der Phasenkontrastuntersuchung lebenden Schwammgewebes and verschiedene histologische und histochemische Methoden angewandt.

Coulonia parva n. sp., a new species of Astropectinidae (Asteroidea; Echinodermata) from the Santonian (Upper Cretaceous) of Sierra de Montsech (southern Pyrenees, Spain)

A new astropectinid sea star,Coulonia parva n. sp., is described from the Santonian of the Sierra de Montsech, northern Spain. The single specimen shows part of a rather weathered ventral side. It is characterized by comparatively long arms (R/r approx. 3/1), with one row of actinals reaching far into the arms; inferomarginals on the interbrachial arc have deep fasciolar grooves that are less developed on the arms; there are no larger spines on adambulacrals and probably also on inferomarginals. Based on presence of deep marginal fascioles,C. parva n. sp. is inferred to have shared the capability for self-burial with the relatedC. platyspina Hess &Blake.      

The mitotic configuration of Chaetomium globosum

The somatic nuclear division ofChaetomium globosum was studied utilizing acetocarmin and aceto-orcein techniques. Nuclear division in hyphae of this species was found to be mitotic, but diversity in morphology and division configuration was noted. Identifiable chromosomes, the metaphase plate, and the chromosome bridge were commonly seen.A combination of extremely small nuclei, difficulties in staining, multinucleate conditions, and protoplasmic streaming in hyphae presented difficulties for these studies. Contradictory views are held on the structure of the nucleus, presence of the centriolar body, and other karyological features as described byFinley (1970)Rabinow &Bakerspigel (1965). Nuclear division structural details in a few other fungal species such as the centriolar body, spindle apparatus, and nuclear membrane disassociation have been examined by electron microscopy (Motta, 1969;Ichida &Fuller, 1968;Namboodiri &Lowry, 1967).The present study and the previous report onC. globosum (Hsu, Yu &Volz, 1972) presents comparative data for a NASA Appollo 16 MEED Mycology investigation now in progress.     

A note onSaissetia privigna [Hem.: Coccidae] in Pakistan and the breeding of its natural enemies

During a survey for the parasites and predators ofSaissetia privigna De Lotto, 4 additional species of natural enemies, namelyAnysis saissetiae (Ashm.),Metaphycus citricola Annecke & Mynhardt,Eublemma sp. andPullus coccidivora Ayyar were recorded in Pakistan.Aneristus ceroplastae How. andEncyrtus lecaniorum Mayr, which are known to be important parasites of this scale, were bred onS. privigna andPulvinaria sp. cultured on fruits ofCucurbita maxima in the laboratory.A. ceroplastae was introduced into France and proved useful in controllingCeroplastes rusci (L.) on citrus.

Dasycladales from the Upper Maastrichtian of Salento Peninsula (Puglia, southern Italy)

Summary A rich dasycladalean assemblage, mainly consisting of new taxa, has been discovered in upper Maastrichtian coarse bioclastic limestones of shelf margin facies cropping out along the southeastern coast of Salento peninsula (Puglia, Southern Italy). It consists of 8 species grouped into 6 genera:Cymopolia decastroi Parente 1994;C. barattoloi Parente, 1994;Zittelina fluegeli n.sp;Jodotella koradae (Dieni, Massari & Radoicic, 1983) nov. comb.;Barattoloporella salentina n. gen. n. sp.;Morelletpora dienii n. sp.;Neomeris spp. (two different species). Zittelina fluegeli n. sp. is characterized by an ovoid thallus with calcification made by a calcareous wall enveloping only the proximal part of the branches (except in basal whorls) and by closely packed, and partly coalescent, calcified ampullae arranged all around the median and distal portion of branches. The transferral ofNeomeris (Larvaria) koradae Dieni, Massari & Radoicic, 1983 into the genusJodotella, with the new combinationJodotella koradae, is proposed on the basis of new observations on the number and arrangement of fertile ampullae. The new genusBarattoloporella, type-speciesBarattoloporella salentina n. gen. n. sp., is erected for dasycladalean algae characterized by a segmented thallus. Each segment consists of: a) basal and apical sterile whorls made by primary branches only, b) central fertile whorls made by primary branches bearing in terminal position one fertile ampulla and one or two secondary branches. morelletpora dienii n. sp. is characterized by a segmented thallus with barrel shaped to pear shaped repetitive elements, consisting of simple whorls of first order branches only. Shape of the branches varies from regularly phloiophorous to more or less differentiated in a stalk and a swollen portion, with or without a subterminal constriction. This is by far the most diverse dasycladalean assemblage ever found in the Maastrichtian. Its diversity supports the conclusion that, within the Late Cretaceous, the Maastrichtian represents a maximum in dasycladalean diversity. Its taxonomic composition strenghtens the hypothesis that dasycladaleans were hardly affected by K/T mass extinction.
